This paper aims to investigate early career researchers' (ECR) needs and barriers in conducting research at Kazakhstani regional universities employing a mixed methods research design with the collection of both quantitative and qualitative data. We surveyed one hundred and twenty university academic staff undertaking the first stages of their research careers at the higher education institutions of West Kazakhstan in the cities of Aktau, Aktobe, Atyrau, and Oral to understand the needs and challenges faced by this community better. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the research administration of the above-stated institutions to understand the issues under study. Understanding these issues is central to developing informed policies for promoting teacher research engagement, as well as taking steps to build the research capacity of university academic staff in their early research career. The study depicts that the university academic staff, in their early research career, face barriers such as the lack of time to conduct research, the difficulty in publishing research, and the lack of research mentorship and university support. The study resulted in the relation of ECRs' knowledge of languages to their research experience, and the ECRs' research directions are as well associated with their (1) conducting research for enhancing teaching skills, (2) applying for research grants, and (3) receiving research funding adds to a deeper understanding of the ECRs' research needs and barriers. Kazakhstani regional universities' ECRs need specifically targeted policies to be undertaken to facilitate their research careers.

The processes of social confinement caused by the global health crisis (COVID-19), have forced professors to assume new research competencies that allow them to improve science indicators and contribute to the research culture in the digital era for the Latin American region. This article analyzes the research culture of Latin American professors in 20 countries in the digital era, and their relationship with the production of scientific papers indexed in the Journal Citation Report (JCR) between 1996 and 2019. A questionnaire (with validity and reliability criteria) with a Likert-type scale was applied to 2,215 professors selected from five international scientific events. The main results show that 78% of the professors have less than 15 years of teaching experience, with ages under 44 years of age and 38.9% of them with an undergraduate academic level, 62.5% of whom responded that they have never published in indexed journals, and that they do not know the proper application of paradigms and research designs. On the other hand, 23.86% of the total citations are self-citations. Therefore, the results reflect a significant relationship between the research culture of professors and Latin American scientific production. Finally, Latin American professors have found themselves in economic, political and social circumstances that affect good research and scientific publication practices, leaving a training gap in research competencies in the new digital era.

The present case study explores the assessment practice of two examiners from different academic backgrounds on an undergraduate thesis work in mathematics education. Reflection notes and feedback from two instances of a thesis-writing process are interrogated using a framework based on a semiotics perspective to meaning-making. It is shown that the examiners utilize aspects that are 'immediate and non-contested' to successively make accessible that which is 'withdrawn yet to be revealed.' In this process, varied interventional approaches are observed to support desirable aspects of teacher professional knowledge including critical-analytical disposition. The study also highlights knowledge integration for teaching, scientific disposition, collaboration, and knowledge transformation as some of the desirable aspects of teacher professional knowledge. The findings indicate that knowledge integration and transformation remain an issue of concern for pre-service teachers. This raises the question of how desirable traits for a teacher-as-a researcher can be promoted within the context of thesis work.

The world relies on authentic research that guides legislation, policy formulations, and governmental and corporate actions. Therefore, researchers globally should be aware of academic integrity and publication ethics. This research delved into plagiarism that severely undermines any scientific study. It explores the relationship between adverse attitudes (attitudes that favor plagiarism) and plagiaristic behavior. We probed deeper into the theories of planned behavior, reasoned action, and ethical theories of rational self-interest, cultural acceptance, and deontology to propose corrective measures as an intervention to reduce adverse attitudes and plagiaristic behavior. Upon empirical testing of the said propositions through two studies (Study 1, n[subscript 1] = 2609; Study 2, n[subscript 2] = 2678), we ascertained a significant negative relationship between corrective measures and adverse attitudes and corrective measures and plagiaristic behavior. We also empirically examined the mediating effect of adverse attitudes on the relationship between corrective measures and plagiaristic behavior. The results confirm the mediation model, in which academics subjected to corrective actions reported reduced plagiaristic behavior through reduced adverse attitudes. The findings further the literature on plagiarism and provide crucial implications for managing plagiaristic behavior among academics. The study also provides specific corrective actions that educational administrators should initiate to ensure academic integrity.

This research pioneered the investigation of the statistically predictive power of academics' research agendas for their organizational commitment--beyond age, gender, academic rank, and academic discipline. Three hundred and thirty-two academics from nine research-oriented comprehensive universities in Zhejiang province and Shanghai, mainland China, responded to the "Multi-Dimensional Research Agendas Inventory-12 Items" (MDRAI-12) and the "Organizational Commitment Inventory." Three main findings were obtained. First, the MDRAI-12 was confirmed to be a valid and reliable instrument for assessing the research agendas of academics in mainland China. Second, both academics' research agendas and their organizational commitment varied as a function of demographics. Third and most importantly, when age, gender, academic rank, and academic discipline were put under control, three of the four trailblazing research agendas (scientific ambition, collaboration, and discovery) predicted the three adaptive organizational commitments (affective, normative, and ideal), whereas the two cohesive research agendas (convergence and conservative) chiefly contributed to the two maladaptive organizational commitments (economic and choice). These findings have shed new light on the literature concerning research agendas and that on organizational commitment. At the same time, the findings have practical implications for university academics and senior managers in their respective efforts to promote innovative research and adaptive organizational commitment among academics.

Instructional reform in STEM aims for the widespread adoption of evidence based instructional practices (EBIPS), practices that implement active learning. Research recognizes that faculty social networks regarding discussion or advice about teaching may matter to such efforts. But teaching is not the only priority for university faculty -- meeting research expectations is at least as important and, often, more consequential for tenure and promotion decisions. We see value in understanding how research networks, based on discussion and advice about research matters, relate to teaching networks to see if and how such networks could advance instructional reform efforts. Our research examines data from three departments (biology, chemistry, and geosciences) at three universities that had recently received funding to enhance adoption of EBIPs in STEM fields. We evaluate exponential random graph models of the teaching network and find that (a) the existence of a research tie from one faculty member i to another j enhances the prospects of a teaching tie from i to j, but (b) even though faculty highly placed in the teaching network are more likely to be extensive EBIP users, faculty highly placed in the research network are not, dimming prospects for leveraging research networks to advance STEM instructional reforms.

Higher education biology is often imagined, perceived, and described as having reached gender equality in terms of who gets to participate in disciplinary practices. However, like any other natural science discipline, higher education biology is a world whose landscapes are shaped by (re)productions of historical, cultural, and social norms. We explore these norms through the lens of identity, asking what identities are recognized by university biology teachers at a large Swedish university, analyzing 94 teaching statements written when applying for faculty positions in biology. We argue that in and through teaching statements, university biology teachers negotiate and perform overarching academic and disciplinary norms and discourses with the goal to present themselves as intelligible candidates. As statements of value, they thereby display implicit and explicit identities recognized in worlds of higher education biology. Using a discourse analytical framework, we identified two university teacher identities imagined as intelligible: Research Science Teachers and Facilitating Science Teachers. Research Science Teachers position research and associated masculine-coded competences as anchor points of biology practice. They consider researchers to be ultimate knowers and consequently to be best suitable for university teaching with the goal to recruit students into research. Facilitating Science Teachers, even though aware of the hegemonic position of research, disentangle imaginaries of what makes a researcher from what makes a university teacher. They transgress dominant imaginaries of research as the ultimate competence for themselves and students, and create spaces for alternative identity work. These findings contribute to a more nuanced understanding of (re)productive processes in science education, providing perspectives of how to together infract intergenerational (re)productions of hegemonic norms of doing science. Additionally, this study provides further evidence that higher education biology is not a gender-neutral higher education landscape.

Academic culture now places high expectations on researchers to demonstrate research productivity alongside teaching, leadership and knowledge exchange. In two studies of researchers across career stages in UK higher education institutions (HEIs), we examined workplace climate within academic departments as (1) supportive of researchers' needs for autonomy, competence and relatedness, (2) publish-or-perish focused and (3) hyper-competitive. In Study 1 (multiwave from 2018 to 2020), need support predicted researchers' lower turnover intention 2 years later, even when controlling for concurrent need support, and career and economic conditions. In Study 2, need support correlated with academic well-being (lower job strain and turnover intention, greater job satisfaction) in a nationwide sample of 2951 researchers. Study 2 found that need support related to improved, and a hyper-competitive motivational climate related to undermined, well-being. Results were mixed for publish-or-perish climate. Performative demands can have deleterious effects on researcher well-being.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify the key aspects of the demographic characteristics and motivations of Chinese faculty at Japanese universities. Design/Approach/Methods: Main methods include an analysis of relevant data from a national survey of full-time international faculty in Japan in 2017 and results from semi-structured interviews with several full-time Chinese faculty hired in different Japanese universities. Findings: This study suggests that, compared to the average level of international faculty, there are larger numbers of female Chinese faculty, greater numbers of Chinese professors, Chinese doctoral degree holders, Chinese faculty in engineering, and larger numbers of them being engaged in research rather than teaching. Further, this study argues that the most important reasons for Chinese faculty to work in Japanese universities are academic or professional reasons, followed by their fondness for Japanese life and culture and their agreement with better living conditions in Japan than in China. Originality/Value: It is the first time that the key characteristics of full-time Chinese faculty at Japanese universities and their motivations to come to Japan are investigated and discussed based on both quantitative and qualitative methods.

As an inquiry based model, Lesson Study highlights teacher professional development in the field of English language teaching by giving teachers the role of researchers in classrooms. Gaining widespread popularity in different educational contexts and holding a great promise as a model of professional development, the Lesson Study model forms a basis for the present study aiming to provide insights into how teacher development is structured through social context and collaboration between colleagues when involved in an inquiry process, and how that learning leads to perceptual changes in teachers' views of the model and changes in teaching practices. The results suggest that the teachers had a positive attitude towards practice both at the beginning and at the end of the study. Although the teachers had initially some concerns before they actually experienced the model and it was their first experience with it, practicing the Lesson Study model seemed to meet their expectations, resulted in improvements in knowledge as well as teaching practices and perspectives, and made a contribution to personal and professional development with the help of engagement in professional collaboration, self-reflection, sharing of content knowledge and teaching experiences, peer observation, and critically discussing how to further enhance student learning.

This paper contributes an autoethnographic account of how Paulo Freire's work shapes understandings of education, social change and the possibilities and practices of social research. Drawing on connections between anthropology and education (Schultz, 2014) that underpin "Pedagogy of the Oppressed" (McKenna, 2013), I explore spaces and practices through which Freire's seminal text provided me with the critical consciousness to interrogate the human experience of education and learning, and to question my practice as I transitioned from teacher to researcher, paying particular attention to learning through discomfort (Boler, 1999). The paper therefore contributes an applied contemporary reading of "Pedagogy of the Oppressed" to demonstrate its continued significance for theory and practice in formal and nonformal education, and its relevance for reimagining research practice. As a form of critically engaged reflective scholarship, the autoethnographic enquiry asks educators and researchers to question their own conceptualisations and practices of knowledge and research to consider a significant and urgent proposition: how we do the work to understand education and our imaginations of what and how it might become.

Teacher inquiry is the process of applying action research to educational problems of practice, carried out by educational practitioners. The value of teacher inquiry--and all applications of action research--is that the research is being conducted by insiders, those who work directly with the problem being studied. It is based upon critical reflection and investigation into one's own professional practice. This paper presents discussion of teacher inquiry as a viable approach to resolving practitioner-based problems of practice in a process that also affords teachers the operation to generate their own knowledge about classroom practices. The process of conducting action research, along with its applications and benefits, are reviewed and contextualized within the work of classroom teachers. Perspectives held by educators regarding teacher inquiry are also discussed. The paper closes with a discussion of ways in which teacher inquiry can be highly beneficial as a means of professional growth during and following the COVID-19 global pandemic and includes a concrete example of teacher inquiry during the pandemic.

In 2012, engineering was adopted as a content area in K-12 science education. Yet few science teachers have engineering content or pedagogical content knowledge. Teachers learn how to teach engineering through professional development experiences, for which Darling-Hammond et al. (2017) outline seven characteristics of effectiveness. This mixed-methods study compared three cohorts of the NSF-funded Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) participants at one university. Two cohorts of in-service teachers experienced RET on-site, and one (summer 2020) experienced the program 100% remotely, due to COVID-19. Research questions explore 1) the extent to which the RET program delivered in-person and remotely reflected the seven characteristics of effective PD; and 2) whether program outcomes of the hands-on, lab-based program could be achieved remotely. This study found that six of the seven characteristics of effective PD were fully evidenced in all three RET cohorts, and one was partially evidenced. Program outcomes were achieved at high and comparable levels for all cohorts, though the nature of the experience varied by mode of delivery. This research contributes to existing literature that finds no inherent differences in the quality of teacher professional development delivered in-person or remotely.

How are university faculty members in STEM disciplines motivated to conduct research, and how does motivation predict their success? The current study assessed how multiple types of self-determined motivation predict research productivity in a sample of 651 faculty from 10 US institutions. Using structural equation modeling, the basic psychological needs of autonomy and competence predicted autonomous motivation (enjoyment, value) that, in turn, was the strongest predictor of self-reported research productivity. Using negative binomial regression, autonomous motivation was the strongest predictor of faculty publications and citations, with a one-standard deviation increase in autonomous motivation (approximately a half response option on a 1-5 Likert scale) corresponding to an 11.63% increase in publications and a 22.57% increase in citations over a three-year period. Occupational and social-environmental background variables (e.g., research percentage on contract, career age, balance, collegiality), as well as controlled motivation (guilt, rewards), had comparatively limited predictive effects. These results are of relevance to higher education institutions aiming to support scholarly productivity in STEM faculty in identifying specific beneficial and detrimental aspects of faculty motivation that contribute to measurable gains in research activity.

This paper reports on the experiences of the authors teaching action research workshops as professional development for language teachers in Europe during the COVID-19 pandemic. It describes work carried out for Action Research Communities for Language Teachers, which is funded under the Training and Consultancies programme of the European Centre for Modern Languages of the Council of Europe as part of its aim to promote quality language education in Europe. The paper focuses on the necessary pivot from face-to-face to online action research workshops and project development in a difficult global context for a group of teachers in Lithuania. It outlines the challenges experienced by the authors and teacher participants, the lessons learned in online teaching of action research, and the positive outcomes for language teachers in setting out on their action research journeys. The paper contributes to the literature on action research in language education and professional development during COVID-19.

Sport management programs are essential pathways by which aspiring professionals in the sport industry achieve their university education. Although a substantial segment of sport management scholarship has focused on driving for higher rates of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the sport industry, less attention has been paid to the sport management academy. In this study, we examine the gender representation of full-time faculty positions, publications, and research methodologies in sport management. Our results show that men are employed in higher numbers overall. In the 329 sport management programs studied, the percentages of women employed at each level are assistant professor 46.8%, associate professor 39.5%, and full professor 37%, suggesting a drop-off aligned with the concept of career derailment or a time lag in reaching equity in the discipline. Women are also less published in top sport management journals ("Journal of Sport Management," "European Sport Management Quarterly," and "Sport Management Review"). Implications of these findings are discussed, as well as future research directions

Organisational efficiency is a consistent quality that derives more from and thrives on strong internal culture than on isolated instances of timely and effortless accomplishments by corporate systems. This study sought to evaluate the relationship between organisational culture and enhanced productivity and efficiency among members of five universities in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, which with its peculiarities provided a unique context for the study. The quantitative and qualitative methods were used for data collection among 104 respondents. Faculty were assessed on the direct impacts of their organisations' culture on their research and publication, creativity and innovativeness, among others, while students were assessed on learning, career prospects and others. The study suggested that most of the five universities had no well-articulated organisational culture. This significantly compromises their unique value addition to the educational system, implying that they risk losing their relative advantages unless they fortify their organisational cultural frontiers.

The condition of research productivity in higher education institutions in Indonesia is still not ideal. Departing from this problem, this paper aims to contribute in the form of a framework used as the main alternative in optimizing research productivity, including the number of publications in higher education institutions. The mechanism proposed is a framework that uses designs derived from games or better known as gamification. Based on the preliminary testing of the proposed framework, it shows that each construct of the framework has a positive impact on research productivity enhancement as the final goal. One of the constructs is Network has a positive impact of 0.415 on Behavior, the Behavior has a positive impact of 0.403 on research productivity enhancement. This also applies to other constructs. Except for the Points that do not have good reliability, it will become homework in future studies.

Despite being an important dimension of teachers' professional development, researcherly disposition is not sufficiently emphasized in initial teacher education. Researcherly disposition can be explained as intentional affective, cognitive and operational tendency to follow existing research in specific contexts, engaging in research production and sharing research, in order to strengthen the link between learning, research and teaching and to direct instruction. This research aims to develop an instrument for identifying researcherly disposition in teacher education context. For the construct validity, exploratory factor analysis was conducted with data collected from 350 pre-service teachers and confirmatory factor analysis with another study group of 325 pre-service teachers. Then, final scale was used with 338 participants. After the model was verified, the Researcherly Disposition Scale was developed as 18-item four-factor scale. Cronbach Alpha coefficient correlation of scale was found out to be ([alpha])=0.88 and the total explained variance appeared to be %55.60. This four-factor structure indicated that the Researcherly Disposition Scale was valid and reliable for future studies. Additionally, female pre-service teachers in Turkey have higher researcherly disposition. Those who participated two or more congress have higher researcherly dispositions compared to those who participated to one or none. Also, those who follow one or more journals have higher researcherly dispositions compared to those who do not follow any journal. Researcherly disposition differs by departments of pre-service teachers. For recommendation, pre-service teachers should meet up with research-oriented professionals who elaborate on teaching and they should be encouraged to follow educational research journals and academic congresses in initial teacher education.

This study aims to analyse the way leadership and digital technology usage affect the faculty members' research performance in surviving higher education sustainability during the COVID-19 pandemic. A breakthrough innovation is needed to design a fast-track online work management system. Hence, it requires a loyal contribution from all the faculty members to support this system. This quantitative study conducted in Malaysia and Indonesia, included 260 faculty members from various fields of studies. Using the online questionnaire, it shows that leadership and technology usage plays an important role to maintain faculty members' research performance during the pandemic. However, it has a slight difference in result between Malaysia and Indonesia in terms of the portion of leadership and digital technology that affected the research performance. The higher education leaders play a stronger role in affecting Malaysian faculty members' research performance, while Indonesian faculty members are influenced more by digital technology usage than by their leaders. Each of them has a significant implication in designing the effective institution policies in optimizing faculty members' research performance.

The purpose of this interpretive qualitative study was to determine how teacher leadership is conceptualised in official documentation in South Africa. Document analysis of national official documentation was performed, using the attributes of teacher leadership as indicated by Webber (2018) in a priori coding in the content analysis. The document analysis revealed that some of the attributes of teacher leadership corresponded with those identified by Webber; attributes that may be unique to the South African context also emerged. The findings revealed that attributes of teacher leadership in South Africa are embedded within cultural responsiveness, which is determined by the unique context of the country. Attributes of teacher leadership feature within specific leadership areas in which teachers act as leaders in formal and informal dimensions.

The teaching-learning process is built on evidence-based practice. Teachers must consider the research foundations in order to apply evidence-based practice effectively. According to previous results, only a few teachers at the school participate in action research. It suggests that the school's research culture has not yet been completely accepted, despite the fact that it is being promoted which is articulated on the training needs assessment indicate that teachers need a lot of training in doing action research. On these premises, a study was carried out to assess the effectiveness of capacity building program toward initiatives to improve the teacher's self-efficacy, research anxiety and research attitude. It employed descriptive -evaluative research design. It administered likert questionnaires to 50 teachers. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results revealed that most of the teacher respondents are Technology Livelihood Education Teachers with a 6-10 years of teaching in the public school and bachelor's degree holder. More so, teachers have high research self-efficacy, low anxiety, and high positive attitude toward conducting action research. Notably, Teacher described the capacity building program towards research initiative in conducting action research as highly effective. However, the level of the research culture index of the school were fair which the scored below 80%. It showed that significant relationship between research self-efficacy, research anxiety, and research attitude and the profile of novice teachers-researchers. Similarly, there was a statistically significant association between research self-efficacy, research anxiety, and research attitude among novice teachers-researchers. When novice teachers-researchers are categorized according to profile, there is a substantial gap in the evaluation of research self-efficacy, research anxiety, and research attitude. This study recommended to adapt these capacity building program in the division level to help the teachers raise their level of capability in research.

This article presents an autoethnographic exercise focused on exploring my history as a teacher educator and researcher in ELT. With this article, I try to show, starting from my life experiences as a teacher and the different concerns that arose during them, my transformation as a researcher. Likewise, I analyze how these transformations are also derived from working with the pre-service English language teachers belonging to a research seedbed focused on doing autoethnographic research. Similarly, I show how my research work has helped others to establish a context for their research. Finally, the reflections derived from my experiences and what I learned while co-investigating in the research seedbed led me to see that continuing to work on the transformation of ELT education in Colombia is necessary.

This article details the author's practitioner inquiry project focused on examining teachers' feelings about and uses of teaching with technology in a hybrid format during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data suggests that the Collaborative Inquiry Group (CIG) and administrative support provided to teachers influenced teachers' positive views and experiences as they started teaching with technology.

As teacher educators (TEs), we have a unique and remarkable opportunity to mentor the next generation of teachers. Over the years, our teacher candidates (TCs) have reported a sense of cognitive and affective dissonance while engaging in their culminating master's research requirement as part of a research seminar course. Cognitively, this research study requires knowledge-generation quite different from research they engaged in throughout the program, where they would synthesize and analyze published work in response to a prompt. This knowledge-generation process would often result in challenging previously held assumptions regarding the topic of inquiry through an analysis of authentic data gathered in the field. Many also experience affective dissonance when beliefs about their sense of self as emerging practitioner-researchers are questioned. Some research has examined ways in which to provide deliberate feedback that attunes not only to the TCs' cognitive and affective dimensions but also to where they can be moved in terms of the outer limits of their learning potential. This study examines how the lenses of socio-cultural and constructive-developmental theories can complement TEs in supporting their TCs in navigating the complex task of teacher research and proposes a framework for feedback practice grounded in a person-centered approach that accounts for TC developmental potentialities.

Purpose: This study introduces the idea of "Kyouzai Kenkyuu" and examines its potentiality as a conceptual tool to point to the curriculum design process with a case of social science education. By doing so, this study can contribute to expanding the target of reflection from the practices "inside" classrooms toward the curriculum design "outside" classrooms and the strengthening of teacher professionalism by understanding teachers as curriculum designers. Approach: The authors utilised literature review to illustrate how "Kyouzai Kenkyuu" can be a conceptual tool to point to the curriculum design process. Subsequently, the authors conducted interpretative practitioner research to showcase how "Kyouzai Kenkyuu" can be taught in pre-service teacher education and how teacher educators can educate pre-service teachers as curriculum designers utilising insider's perspectives. Finally, the authors discussed the potential of "Kyouzai Kenkyu" as a conceptual tool to indicate the content and method of designing the curriculum and as an approach to enhance teachers' development as curriculum designers. Findings: "Kyouzai Kenkyuu"--"Kyouzai" meaning learning material(s) and "Kenkyuu" meaning study or research in the Japanese language--is a practice for curriculum design and one of the dispositions to define teachers as professionals. In Japan, teachers are expected to be practitioners who conduct "Kenkyuu" (research) about discipline, students, and the context surrounding students to design suitable "Kyouzai" (learning material[s]) and a curriculum for individual classrooms. In method courses, pre-service teachers verbalize and reflect on their "Kyouzai Kenkyuu" and how it impacts curriculum design. Through these experiences, social science teachers in Japan can enjoy the opportunities to develop their design and teaching rationales. Research limitations: This study is limited to three method courses that the authors have taught; thus, the findings on how to teach "Kyouzai Kenkyuu" may not be generalizable.

When honors faculty share experiences from their own research, students learn that making mistakes and trying again is an important part of the learning process. This brief article shares a class exercise that successfully develops research proficiency.

Heightened pressures to publish prolifically and secure external funding stand in stark contrast to the slow scholarship movement. This article explores ways in which research funding expectations permeate the "figured worlds" of 16 mid-career academics in education, social work, sociology, and geography in seven universities in Ontario, Canada. Participants demonstrated a steady record of research accomplishment and a commitment to social justice in their work. The analysis identified three themes related to the competing pressures these academics described in their day-to-day lives: funding, challenges, and the fast professor. Participants spoke about their research funding achievements and struggles. In some cases, they explained how their positioning, including gender and race, might have affected their research production, compared to colleagues positioned differently. Their social justice research is funded, but some suspect at a lower level than colleagues studying conventional topics. Challenges might be located in the backstage (personal and home lives) or the frontstage (university or funding agency policies or embedded in the research itself). In aiming for the impossible standards of a continuously successful research record, these individuals worked "all the time." Advocates claim that slow scholarship is not really about going slower but rather about maintaining quality and caring in one's work; yet, participants' accounts suggest they perceive few options other than to perform as "fast professors." At mid-career, they question whether and how they can keep up this aspect of their figured worlds for 20 or more years.

The research-teaching nexus is an important factor in the enhancement of the quality of teaching and learning in higher education institutions. The purpose of the study was to explore undergraduate students' awareness and experiences of research in one faculty at Sohar University, Oman. Data were gathered from 240 undergraduate students using an online survey. Overall, results indicated that while there was good evidence of students' awareness and experiences of research, less than half of the students in the sample were aware of or had experienced important research activities. Some students reported advantages arising from their participation in research--including developing research skills and gaining new knowledge. They also reported the need for more hands-on research experience and instructor support. Some findings were generally consistent with the literature on students' awareness and experiences of research. The study provided important implications for the research-teaching nexus at Sohar University.

There is debate about whether and how educational research has relevance for and is accessible to teaching practitioners. Much literature highlights the value of practitioner-based research approaches as a pathway to engaging teachers more readily with and in research, however, the practitioner research approach is often viewed negatively and is criticised for being too localised and trivial. In addition, there are concerns about the ability of teaching practitioners to undertake valid research and generate new knowledge that might provide value to the wider teaching community. Nevertheless, it is widely accepted that practitioner-based research can be beneficial to teachers and teaching, and despite the criticisms and debates surrounding validity and generalisability, the benefits to practitioners of engaging in such learning can go beyond the classroom. Importantly, as identified in a small-scale study in Aotearoa/New Zealand, practitioner research was found to advance the notion of educators as professionals and knowledge producers and had the effect of reconnecting educators to their work as skilled professionals.

Although Brazilian governmental documents have conceived language teaching from a critical perspective, the recent scenario points to a backlash towards critical perspectives on teaching, which have been socially perceived as indoctrination. Since we understand critical pedagogy in additional language classrooms as a necessary emancipatory perspective, this article aims at discussing possibilities for promoting critical language development. More specifically, it draws on two doctoral studies in which teacher-researchers implemented critical task cycles that aimed at promoting critical language development by fostering elementary and high school students' reflections on gender issues. In both studies, tasks were developed to promote learners' communicative and critical development following task-based principles. The comparison of the results, derived from the analysis of learners' interactions during implementation, responses to questionnaires and interviews, and of the teacher-researchers' self-report diaries, revealed not only the feasibility of teaching critically through tasks, but also the positive role of: (1) A critical needs-analysis in designing and implementing critical tasks; (2) the use of critical dialogue for fostering knowledge co-construction; (3) the development of final projects to challenge common-sense discourses. These findings indicate, thus, relevant principles for teaching critically through tasks, emphasizing possibilities and challenges for promoting social transformation.

Today, internationalization is among the most important strategic goals of higher education. In this context, academicians hold a significant place in academic knowledge exchange since they constitute the key mechanism in internationalization. Despite this fact, female academicians continue to be underrepresented in the internationalization of higher education. Considering the emphasis on Sustainable Development Goal 5, which states that gender equality is the basis of sustainable development for all individuals until 2030, it is clear that women faculty members should be supported more in the internationalization process of the higher education. Further studies are required to determine how much of the inequalities experienced by women academics in terms of international academic mobility, visibility, and international publication opportunities are being transferred to international academic environment. For this reason, the present article aims to investigate the representation of female academicians in the internationalization of higher education from a feminist theory approach. Results of our study clearly indicate that there is a need for new policies in terms of the "visibility" of female faculty members in higher education in the world.

This study aims to determine the governance factors that influence the scientific research output of lecturers through the application of PLS-SEM, in conjunction with ANOVA and "t"-test. Based on a survey of 398 lecturers in twelve higher education institutions (HEIs) in Vietnam, the psychometric properties of the scales measuring the considered dimensions of scientific research outputs were initially examined through the Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) procedure, prior to being input into the PLS-SEM model. The SEM model comprised six constructs for the scientific research outputs: scientific research objectives of HEIs, leadership, decentralization, policies for lecturers, support for scientific research activities, and resources for scientific research. The results reveal that resources for scientific research have the most impact on lecturers' scientific research output, followed by policies for lecturers, support for scientific research activities, scientific research objectives of HEIs, and finally, leadership.

Design-based research (DBR) develops solutions in combination with research and has gained increasing popularity in educational research. This research approach involves close collaboration between researchers and practitioners. Many studies show that teachers are often passive participants in DBR projects, where their role becomes implementing researchers' ideas. This paper reports on a case where teachers became, instead, a driving force in a DBR project and investigates the conditions for this to happen. Data were collected by means of group interviews with the eight pilot teachers in the KreTek project, which was undertaken as a collaboration between a university and a municipality in Norway. The authors' own experiences as participants in the project also form part of the empirical basis for the study. The conditions for active involvement identified here are 1. A shared and relevant challenge; 2. An open entrance to the project; 3. An allocated time and meeting space; and 4. Responsibility and autonomy. The results are discussed in light of perspectives on teacher professionalism, theories on self-determination and previous research on teachers' roles in collaboration between researchers and teachers. It is concluded that by fulfilling the identified conditions for active involvement of teachers with an emphasis on trust, responsibility and autonomy, teachers may play an active role in DBR projects. In turn, this can facilitate a fruitful process where products of research projects using a DBR approach are deeply grounded in practitioners' contexts and thus are able to meet the actual needs of schools.

Online English comic is one of reading material that can be used by students. Students should be triggered by interesting and understandable reading material to increase their reading motivation and English proficiency. The objective of this study is to discuss the benefits of online English comics as reading materials and to discover the applications and websites that are usually used by students to read online English comics. This study applied the descriptive qualitative study supported by interviews as a data-gathering technique. The results of this study showed the benefits of online English comics as reading materials. Those are adding language knowledge such as vocabulary and grammar, enhancing reading comprehension, building critical thinking, increasing creativity, and developing reading motivation. The second finding is about the applications and websites to read English comics that students prefer to read. There are some applications and websites that are usually used by students to read English comics. The applications are Webtoon and Ciayo Comic, and also the websites include Mangakakalot.com, Mangareaderapp.com, Mangazuki.info, and Mangapanda.com.

This report from the field discusses a new approach taken to the co-evolution of teaching excellence and evidence-based practice in the context of learning development in a Technological University in Ireland. It explores supporting faculty in their exploration of pedagogic inquiry and teaching excellence and how this can co-evolve to generate synergies in academic productivity (the core activity sets of the faculty). A key part of this learning development work is understanding how integrating inquiry and teaching can drive excellence and pedagogic innovation in practice.

This study investigated the differences in knowledge sharing (KS) behavior among academicians from research universities (RUs) and non-research universities (Non-RUs) and the impact of their differences on research engagement in Malaysia. From the lens of the theory of planned behavior, research engagement is integrated into the original theory as the consequence of KS behavior. Applying a multi-group analysis through partial least square structural equation modeling, 458 academic staff from twenty public universities in Malaysia participated in the study. The study findings revealed that in the RU sample, commitment and subjective norm have no significant impact on attitude and intention, respectively. However, a significant impact of commitment and subjective norm on attitude and intention, respectively, was found in the non-RU sample. This study contributes to the knowledge management perspective among academicians and compares RU and non-RU academicians in Malaysia. A relevant mitigation plan must be taken to ensure that academicians in both RUs and non-RUs share their knowledge willingly and sincerely to elevate the status of higher education in the country to a greater height as a top world-class university. Moreover, an analysis of the implication of higher education in the country as well as institutionalization of education excellence could be achieved through better KS behavior in the South East Asian region.

Inspired by Freire's principle of dialogue, in this article we present a series of dialogues and critical syntheses between a science teacher-researcher with 35 years of experience and an early-career science teacher-researcher. We explore being in-between academic research in science education and high school teaching. Following Anzaldúa's conceptualization, this site is characterized as a Borderland, with potentialities and challenges, capable of producing displacements in both spaces. Through an exploration of our trajectories, we dialogue about recognition, our identities as teachers-researchers, and ways of doing research and teaching that aligns with demands for social justice in science education. We also explore how our praxis helps in resisting accountability in education, privileging artisanal work and collective reflection.

The purpose of this study was to explore the co-construction of an action research (AR) experience between a teacher educator and pre-service teachers (PSTs). Participants were six PSTs and a teacher educator who supervised their school placement. The teacher educator introduced the PSTs to, and facilitated them through, the AR process while creating an environment in which participation, co-construction, and shared investment were key elements across the group. A critical friend assisted the teacher educator to facilitate the PSTs' experience of AR. Data included (i) audio-taped weekly discussions between the teacher educator and PSTs, (ii) the teacher educator's field notes, (iii) audio-recorded weekly discussions between the teacher educator and critical friend, and (iv) semi-structured post-interviews with PSTs and the teacher educator. Data were analysed qualitatively using the constant comparison approach. Results indicated that the three crucial aspects of a co-constructed AR experience were: centrality of the critical friend, the teacher educator sharing her experiences of AR with PSTs, and creating of a collaborative and supportive learning environment across AR cycles. In conclusion, this study indicates that there needs to be a shift in the understanding of how best to support a shared learning space where we can discuss and encourage each other in co-constructive ways.
