A port has traditionally played such a fundamental role as cargo handling within the concept of containerisation and multi-modalism. Today, however, the port is required to become more aligned with global supply chains: that is, integration – more specifically, termed 'port supply chain integration' (PSCI). Increasing scale and volume of sea-based trade results in a situation where the port is blamed as a source of environmental and social externalities – 'port sustainability' (PS) being stemmed from. Existing studies have emphasised the role of PSCI with a few economic facets; due attention has not been given to sustainability aspects. Bearing these issues in mind, this paper attempts to conceptually discuss a claim that PSCI has a potential influence on PS and to propose a so-called 'sustainably integrated port supply chain' by establishing a conceptual framework linked to a series of testable propositions. Using systematic review, this paper delineates the role of supply chain integration in achieving sustainability in ports, and it investigates the conceptual interactions among PSCI and PS constructs and variables in a holistic approach. Propositions to be suggested from this line of exercise can be used as a basis for an empirical test towards establishing a theory applicable to the field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper investigates the antecedents of supply chain agility and its impact on firm's operational performance. Drawing upon dynamic capabilities perspective and contingency theory, the study argues that supply chain agility is a result of the combination of lean manufacturing and supply chain integration practices, and that supply chain agility is positively linked to firm's operational performance. Employing structural equation modelling, this research presents evidence that companies with agile supply chains perform better than companies focused only on implementing lean or supply chain integration practices; in this sense, the results show that supply chain agility fully mediates the relationships between lean/supply chain integration and firm's operational performance. This study contributes to the growing body of conceptual and empirical literature on agility by understanding the synergies between lean manufacturing, supply chain integration, supply chain agility and firm's operational performance. This study aims to examine how the influence of supply chain orientation on logistics performance through supply chain integration as an intervening variable, a research study was conducted on manufacturing companies engaged in consumer goods processing services that use coal transportation services. The research method used in this study is quantitative using data collection techniques, observation, surveys, and primary data analysis. The survey is conducted by giving questionnaires or interviews to respondents to collect data on the variables studied. The research sample was 135 samples as owners or managers of manufacturing companies engaged in consumer goods processing services that use goods transportation services at the port of Central Java. Research analysis tool using AMOS 22.00 software with SEM (Structural Equation Modeling) method. The results showed that there was a significant influence of supply chain orientation on logistics performance with a p value of 0.036 and a CR value of 2.092 (able to receive H1). There is a significant positive influence of supply chain orientation on supply chain integration with a p value of 0.009 and a CR value of 2.625 (acceptable H2). There is a significant influence on supply chain integration on logistics performance with a p-value of 0.015 and a CR value of 2.441 (can accept H3). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The goal of the paper was to analyze data from a short loop supply chain (supplier – manufacturer – customer), seek the reasons for the presence of the bullwhip effect (or a reverse bullwhip effect) and quantify its intensity within a practical case study from an automotive industry company based in Western Romania. Methodology: Data for this research were gathered over 27 weeks for the case of the most important 50 supplier-customer pairings of the manufacturing plant. The collected data were then analyzed using Holt-Winters exponential smoothing (level, trend and seasonality) and the methods of descriptive statistics: dispersion (range, variance, and standard deviation) and frequency distribution (count, percent, and frequency). Results: Our results confirm the existence of both the bullwhip effect (BE) and the reverse bullwhip effect (RBE) within the supply chain of the production site, as there are 54% of cases where order variation between the group of analyzed suppliers and customers is surprisingly greater for the latter, with only 12% of cases being the source of the classic bullwhip effect. Conclusion: According to our research, both effects are present, with a higher prevalence of the RBE, but the intensity of both effects can be significantly reduced by improving planning schedules, internal performance and logistics metrics, whilst also increasing the integration of suppliers and manufacturers in the upstream and downstream supply chain material and information flows.

Purpose: Agricultural supply chains witness several challenges, which result in increased cost of operations, high wastages, and low efficiency. In the case of vegetable supply chains (VSCs), the intensity of challenges is very high due to perishability. Literature suggests various operations research tools for supply chain management of perishables, but there is a paucity of research highlighting the real models adopted by real players in the market while making revenue. This paper investigates and presents how a startup can innovate its business model to meet the VSC issues by adopting a single case study methodology. Design: The phenomenon was studied by convergent interviewing with the company's key personnel and gathering information from the company's key documents followed by content analysis. Findings: The study shows real practices adopted by a startup to cater to the challenges of VSCs in India by incorporating various tools of productivity enhancement and waste reduction. It highlights the adoption of a traceability system, production planning mechanism, reduced food miles, and green initiatives contributing to an innovative business model. The study maps the business model of the startup with the business model concept provided by Lindgardt and colleagues [2009] and states two more dimensions, i.e. "Client relationship management" and "Sustainability activities" to expand the mentioned configuration. Originality: The study is the first of its kind to highlight the Business Model Innovation of a startup to address the VSC challenges in the Indian context. Practical contribution: The study has important managerial implications useful for finding our new value propositions in a VSC firm by shortening and effectively integrating the supply chain while minimizing information asymmetry to achieve economies and sustainability. Theoretical contribution: This study has strengthened the methodological advances in the study of business models based upon earlier validated configurations. The outbreak of the COVID‐19 pandemic has disrupted supply chains and increased the uncertainties faced by firms. While firms are struggling to survive and recover from the pandemic, Chinese e‐commerce platforms have demonstrated resilient supply chains. We develop a framework that investigates the impacts of integration between an e‐commerce platform and suppliers on supply chain resilience and the moderating effect of the suppliers' product flexibility. An analysis of data from a Chinese e‐commerce platform using operational indicators finds that integration between the e‐commerce platform and suppliers in terms of information sharing, joint planning and logistics cooperation has positive impacts on supply chain resilience, while procurement automation has the opposite effect. Furthermore, product flexibility positively moderates the impacts of information sharing, joint planning and logistics cooperation. The results enhance current understandings of the factors that contribute to the development of supply chain resilience and reveal that the relationship between integration and resilience should be examined within a contingency framework. PT XYZ Indonesia is a company that has shown outstanding business performance in the last three years, and it has grown yearly. A study was conducted by distributing 40 questionnaires that became samples of company employees with work relationships and knowledge of supply chain integration, operational performance, and product quality to test these hypotheses. Furthermore, the data were analyzed with an SEM tool to test the causality relationship of the research variables. The theoretical evidence showed that product quality is positively influenced by supply chain integration for this type of company's business field. The managerial implications are to pay more attention to supply chain integration which greatly affects the company's operational performance. The ultimate aim of supply chain integration is to achieve effective external integration between firms in a supply chain, and the starting point for this broad integration is intra-firm integration. However, the extent to which functional units/departments integrate within and amongst them and the effectiveness of the integration is not fully understood. This paper reports the results of a study carried out in three purposively selected large construction organisations that operate at national level, with the aim of assessing the extent of, and the effectiveness of their intra-firm integration. Descriptive statistics was used to analyse the data collected across the three organisations. Findings indicated that every department engaged in internal integration practices (communication and information sharing, coordination and resource sharing, and organisational relationships) in varying proportions, and the effectiveness of the practices equally varied amongst the departments. 47% of the departments indicated that the extent of integration within and between them was high and effective, 22% indicated a moderate level and somewhat effective integration, while 31% indicated that the extent of their integration was low and ineffective. It is concluded that internal integration, when effectively done within and across functional units and departments, would enhance the internal operational efficiency and the external integrative capabilities that would increase competitive performance of organisations. This research aims to explore how supply chain integration moderates the relationship between servitization and performance. Based on the resource-based view and transaction cost economics, we identified both the benefits and disadvantages of supply chain integration in servitization. Consistent with prior research, we differentiated basic services from advanced services. Hypotheses were tested using international survey data from 931 manufacturing business units. The results indicate that basic services are positively related to sales growth, while advanced services are positively related to return on sales (ROS) growth. Regarding the moderating role of supply chain integration, supplier integration enhances the positive relationship between basic services and sales growth. Customer integration strengthens the relationship between advanced services and ROS growth but weakens the relationship between basic services and ROS growth. Our results suggest that the choice of supplier and customer integration should be aligned with the types of services to maximize the benefits of servitization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aims to investigate the effect of management commitment (MC), supply chain integration (SCI), and government support (PGS) on small and medium enterprises (SMEs) innovation performance. The study was quantitative, and the cross-sectional method was used to gather 685 valid data through a structured questionnaire. Confirmatory factor analysis in Analysis of Moment Structures version 26 software was engaged in checking the constructs' validity. Hierarchical regression analysis was employed to examine the hypothesized relationships using Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 26 software. The regression analysis findings revealed that management commitment influenced the three dimensions of SCI (internal, customer, and supplier integration) and SMEs' innovation performance. The results from the mediation analysis indicated a partial mediation effect of internal, customer, and supplier integration in the relationship between management commitment and SMEs' innovation performance. Also, PGS significantly moderated the relationship between SCI and SMEs' innovation performance. The present study is critical as it explains the medium through which MC, SCI, PGS, and SMEs’ innovation performance relate in one conceptual model.

This paper aims to examine how absorptive capacity affects supply chain integration (SCI) and service performance. The association between SCI and service performance was also studied. Data were collected from four-star and five-star hotels in Egypt. A total of 114 responses were obtained. The PLS-SEM technique and SmartPLS 4.0 software were employed for analysis. The study revealed that absorptive capacity has an impact on SCI and service performance. There is also a positive relationship between SCI and service performance. Specifically, a positive influence of internal integration and customer integration on service performance was found. However, supplier integration shows no significant relationship with service performance. This suggests that enhancing awareness of customer needs and internal coordination improves service performance. From a practical viewpoint, managers must promote a learning culture, foster innovation, and encourage internal and external collaboration. These factors were identified as key components that can improve service performance and lead to the development of competitive advantage, as shown in this paper. In addition, supply chain vitality was found to enhance quality and service, particularly when there is coordination between departments and consideration of customer needs. This study is among the earliest to examine how absorptive capacity affects both supply chain integration and service performance in the hotel industry. The research contributes at a theoretical level by shedding light on the role of absorptive capacity in the development of competitive advantage.

Cloud Computing are innovative technologies that are being applied in the main business functions in the supply chain. This study aims to reveal the determinant factors (drivers and a relevant outcome) of the level of use or assimilation of Cloud Computing in the supply chain. In order to test three hypotheses we conducted an empirical study in 484 companies from sectors in an intermediate position in the supply chain. The data gathering method consisted of a telephone survey using a computerised system (CATI). We used structural equation modelling (SEM) to test the hypotheses. The empirical study reveals that Advanced Manufacturing Technologies pursuing the internal efficiency of the supply chain (Intra-organisational IT) and IT for capabilities in e-business/e-commerce seeking external connection of the supply chain with other companies (Inter-organisational IT) are drivers of Cloud Computing assimilation. This study was conducted to evaluate the practice of implementing Supply Chain Management (SCM) and Supply chain Integration (SCI) on operational performance in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Malang City. This study aims to determine the effect of SCM practices on supply chain integration, the effect of SCM on operational performance, and the effect of supply chain integration on operational performance. Data collection in this study was carried out by distributing 100 questionnaires to owners or managers of SMEs in Malang City which the criteria are food and beverage agro-industry SMEs located in Malang City and have carried out supply chain management (SCM) activities for at least 1 year. The analytical method used in testing the research hypothesis is using multiple regression. The results of the study found that 1) there is a positive influence of supply chain management practices on operational performance, 2) there is a negative influence of supply chain integration on operational performance, 3) supply chain management practices and supply chain integration simultaneously have a positive effect on operational performance in SMEs in the Malang City.

This study examined the association between digital transformation (DT), supply chain integration (SCI), and overall sustainable supply chain performance (OSSCP). The current literature has preliminarily explored the concepts of DT and SCI and their relationship with sustainable supply chain performance. However, real empirical evidence of the direct impact of DT and SCI on OSSCP has been missing so far. To fill this gap, data were collected from 134 professionals working in international manufacturing companies operating in Morocco through a questionnaire-based survey from August 2022 to November 2022. A conceptual framework was developed based on DT, SCI, and OSSCP and analyzed by partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) with the assistance of SmartPLS 4.0 software. The findings revealed that DT has a significant positive influence on SCI and OSSCP. Furthermore, SCI directly and positively impacts OSSCP with a partial mediation effect on the relationship between DT and OSSCP. Further, this research provides insights for practitioners into enhancing sustainable supply chain performance by adopting digital technologies and integrating SC functions. In particular, this study revealed that DT adoption drives a higher ethical supply chain level from the perspective of sustainability and efficiency in operations. At the turn of the century, firms struggled to make transportation decisions in increasingly integrated supply chains that routinely stretched around the world. In "A Framework for Transportation Decision Making in an Integrated Supply Chain" (Supply Chain Management: An International Journal 5 [2]: 71–77) T. P. Stank and T. J. Goldsby proposed an original transportation decision-making framework to address the need. The framework is cited over 250 times in the academic literature and referenced by firms seeking to optimize cost-service tradeoffs in an environment characterized by higher levels of market freedoms, service innovation, and supply chain collaboration. Since the year 2000, though, the digital revolution, customer expectations, and supply chain resilience concerns have given rise to new demands for transportation decision-making, with operations residing in a hyper-integrated and further globally entrenched state. Therefore, we revisit Stank and Goldsby's original framework to review major transportation decision areas and devise contemporary mechanisms to address the modern business environment. Our framework highlights the rapid and interdependent nature of today's corporate transportation decisions to help firms tackle current business needs and long-term strategic interests. The purpose of this paper is to investigate strength of supply chain integration based on social exchange theory and its resultant impact on supply chain cost and responsiveness. The study surveyed Korean export firms and obtained 182 usable responses. Data were analysed using cluster analysis and analysis of variance. Findings confirm that the strength of supply chain integration provides a mechanism for measuring the width of integration for both suppliers and customers. Further, identifiable gaps in cost performance and responsiveness were found based on strength of supply chain integration. This paper contributes through the development and testing of a conceptual model based on social exchange theory and also offers managerial suggestions in the understanding of customer needs and the importance of sharing information with suppliers in achieving improved cost performance and responsiveness in the supply chain. Based on the resource orchestration theory, this study built a research model to understand the effect of supply chain network insight and supply chain integration on enterprise performance. We also involved the contingency theory to investigate the moderating effect of environmental uncertainty on supply chain integration and enterprise performance. We collected the data samples from 405 enterprises and used the SEM approach to verify the model. Results demonstrated the direct path of network insight to promote enterprise performance, the indirect path of supply chain integration as a mediating factor, and the role of environmental uncertainty as a boundary condition for the relationship between supply chain integration and enterprise performance, thus making theoretical and practical contributions to the management of supply chain resources and relationships and the performance enhancement of manufacturing. Purpose: This paper aims to establish a relationship between supply chain integration (SCI) and supply chain flexibility (SCF) to develop a two-dimensional approach, i.e. integrated flexibility. Design/methodology/approach: Building on a relational view and dynamic capability theory, this paper argues that integrated flexibility is the strategy that enables organisations to achieve different positions and states to create distinctive capability. The article has proposed the conceptual framework that connects different supply chain strategies and practices to improve supply chain performance (SCP) considering the cross-disciplinary approach. Findings: The conceptual framework around the new perspective, i.e. integrated flexibility, is built to deal with issues related to operations management. The paper suggests examining the mediating effect of SCF between SCI and SCP and the moderating role of knowledge management (KM), data analytics (DA) and quality management (QM) practices on their relationship. Moreover, research direction in terms of propositions and implications are developed to showcase how underlying practices streamline the supply chain and lead to superior SCP. Practical implications: The proposed framework discusses the degree of integration and flexibility levels to guide practitioners in designing a supply chain strategy with their partners and answering how much resources need to be extended to achieve flexible operations and realise SCP. Originality/value: Authors have developed an entirely new integrated flexibility concept that provides a base to sustain in the competitive market.
