Abstract

CdS-based composites as the highly efficient photocatalyst have been extensively investigated in recent years due to the suitable band gap and high photocatalytic efficiency. In this study, the effect of various factors (pH, U(VI) concentration, contents, and types of photocatalyst) on photocatalytic reduction of U(VI) by MoS2/CdS composite was investigated. The optimized experimental conditions (e.g., pH 7.0, 20 mg/g U(VI), and 1.0 g/L photocatalyst) was obtained by batch techniques. Approximately 97.5% of U(VI) was photo-catalytically reduced into U(IV) by 2.5 wt% MoS2/CdS composite within 15 min. After 5 cycles, 2.5 wt% MoS2/CdS composite still exhibited the high removal efficiency of U(VI) under 50-min irradiation, indicating the good stability. The photo-reduction mechanism of U(VI) on MoS2/CdS composite was attributed to the O−2 radicals by quenching experiments, ESR, and XPS analysis. Abstract

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has been paid increasingly attentions in U(VI) removal due to the visible-light response, whereas the high recombination of photogenerated electron and holes limited the actual environmental application. Herein, Z-scheme MoS2/g-C3N4 heterojunction was fabricated to enhance removal of U(VI) from aqueous solution. The microscopic and spectroscopic characterizations showed that addition of MoS2 on surface of g-C3N4 increased separation efficiency of photogenerated charge, decreased the bandgap and improved the intensity of light adsorption. Approximate 82% of UO22+ was photo-reduced by MoS2/g-C3N4 after 1 h of light irradiation at pH 4.5. The high effective photocatalytic reduction of U(VI) on MoS2/g-C3N4 was attributed to ·O2− radials according to quenching experiments. XPS analysis showed that the adsorbed U(VI) was photo-reduced into U(IV). Abstract

Perovskite‐based composites have been widely investigated in photocatalysis due to their narrow bandgap width and high separation efficiency of photogenerated charges. Herein, the novel perovskite/carbon nitride heterojunction (SrTiO3/g‐C3N4) was synthesized by a simple calcination method and then was applied in the photocatalytic reduction of U(VI) from aqueous solutions. The characterizations indicated that incorporation of SrTiO3 increased the charge separation efficiency and light absorption range, while it decreased electron‐hole recombination. Specifically, the SrTiO3/g‐C3N4 composite exhibited the high U(VI) removal rate (100 % in 15 min), high selectivity (88 % U(VI) from seawater within 15 min), chemical stability, and excellent regeneration performance due to the improved electron utilization efficiency. Electrons play an important role in U(VI) photocatalytic reduction according to quenching experiments, XPS, and electron paramagnetic resonance analysis. Abstract

Thallium (Tl) is a well-recognized hazardous heavy metal with very high toxicity. It is usually concentrated in sulfide minerals, such as pyrite (FeS2), sphalerite (ZnS), chalcopyrite (CuS) and galena (PbS). Here, this study was carried out to investigate the indigenous microbial communities via 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis in typical surface sediments with various levels of Tl pollution (1.8–16.1 mg/kg) due to acid mine drainage from an active Tl-containing pyrite mining site in South China. It was found with more than 50 phyla from the domain Bacteria and 1 phyla from the domain Archaea. Sequences assigned to the genera Ferroplasma, Leptospirillum, Ferrovum, Metallibacterium, Acidithiobacillus, and Sulfuriferula manifested high relative abundances in all sequencing libraries from the relatively high Tl contamination. Canonical correspondence analysis further uncovered that the overall microbial community in this area was dominantly structured by the geochemical fractionation of Tl and geochemical parameters such as pH and Eh. Spearman's rank correlation analysis indicated a strong positive correlation between acidophilic Fe-metabolizing species and Tltotal, Tloxi, and Tlres. The findings clarify potential roles of such phylotypes in the biogeochemical cycling of Tl, which may facilitate the development of in-situ bioremediation technology for Tl-contaminated sediments. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd; The relationship of thallium exposure and microbial diversity in the pyrite mining affected sediments was uncovered in an in-situ study. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

Abstract

Thallium (Tl) is a trace metal of severe toxicity. Its health concerns via consumption of contaminated vegetables have often been overlooked or underestimated. This study was designed to gain insight into the actual level and distribution characteristics of Tl and metal (loid)s (Pb, Cd, Cr, Sb, Mn, Cu, Zn, Ni, and Co) in agricultural soils and common vegetables cultivated in different zones (upstream, midstream, and downstream) of a densely populated residential area in a typical mine city, which has been open-pit exploiting Tl-bearing pyrite minerals since 1960s. The results show that most of the agricultural soils exhibit contaminated levels of Tl, with Tl contents (upstream: 1.35–4.31 mg/kg, midstream: 2.43–5.19 mg/kg, and downstream: 0.65–2.33 mg/kg) mostly exceeding the maximum permissible level (MPL) for agricultural land use (1 mg/kg). Sequential extraction procedure indicates that even Tl is predominantly retained in the residual fraction, significant levels of Tl are still present in the geochemically mobile fractions. Besides, metals like Cu, Cd, Mn, and Co are mostly distributed in the labile fractions. Almost all metal (loid)s in edible parts of the vegetables exceed their corresponding MPL for consumption. The chronic daily intake (CDI) and hazard quotient (HQ) values calculated for inhabitants at different ages indicate non-negligible Tl risks via consumption of local vegetables, especially for children. Therefore, it is critical to establish effective measures for hazardous waste management and enforceable regulations in Tl-polluted area to mitigate potential severe impacts of Tl on human health through food chain. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd; Alarming levels of toxic thallium were widely detected in vegetables and soils in a typical pyrite mining city. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd
