In this paper we introduce an agent-based model together with a particle filter approach for studying the spread of COVID-19. Investigations are performed on the metropolis of Tokyo, but other cities, regions or countries could have been equally chosen. A novel method for evaluating the effective reproduction number is one of the main outcome of our approach. Other unknown parameters and unknown populations are also evaluated. Uncertain quantities, as for example the ratio of symptomatic / asymptomatic agents, are tested and discussed, and the stability of our computations is examined. The first measurement of lepton-jet momentum imbalance and azimuthal correlation in lepton-proton scattering at high momentum transfer is presented. These data, taken with the H1 detector at HERA, are corrected for detector effects using an unbinned machine learning algorithm OmniFold, which considers eight observables simultaneously in this first application. The unfolded cross sections are compared to calculations performed within the context of collinear or transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) factorization in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) as well as Monte Carlo event generators. We study the enantio-specific state transfer in a four-level model for symmetric-top chiral molecules. Such a model is formed by coupling the electric-dipole transitions among four appropriate working states with three electromagnetic fields. It includes two cyclic three-level substructures, where the overall phases differ by $\pi$ with enantiomers and reflect the chirality dependence of the molecule. We study the non-equilibrium thermodynamics of a heat engine operating between two finite-sized reservoirs with well-defined temperatures. Within the linear response regime, it is found that the uniform temperature of the two reservoirs at final time $\tau$ is bounded from below by the entropy production $\sigma_{\mathrm{min}}\propto1/\tau$. We discover a general power-efficiency trade-off depending on the ratio of heat capacities ($\gamma$) of the reservoirs for the engine. And a universal efficiency at maximum average power of the engine for arbitrary $\gamma$ is obtained. For practical purposes, the operation protocol of an ideal gas heat engine to achieve the optimal performance associated with $\sigma_{\mathrm{min}}$ is demonstrated. Our findings can be used to develop an general optimization scenario for thermodynamic cycles with finite-sized reservoirs in real-world circumstances., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. The ALS-U light source will implement on-axis single-train swap-out injection employing an accumulator between the booster and storage rings. The accumulator ring design is a twelve period triple-bend achromat that will be installed along the inner circumference of the storage-ring tunnel. A non-conventional injection scheme will be utilized for top-off off-axis injection from the booster into the accumulator ring meant to accommodate a large $\sim 300$~nm emittance beam into a vacuum-chamber with a limiting horizontal aperture radius as small as $8$ mm. The scheme incorporates three dipole kickers distributed over three sectors, with two kickers perturbing the stored beam and the third affecting both the stored and the injected beam trajectories. This paper describes this ``3DK'' injection scheme and how it fits the accumulator ring's particular requirements. We complete the task of optimal probabilistic coherence distillation protocol, whose aim is to transform a general state into a set of n-level maximally coherent states via strictly incoherent operations (SIO). Specifically, we present the necessary and sufficient condition for the transformation from a mixed state into a pure-state ensemble via SIO. With the aid of this condition and the simplex algorithm, we can accomplish the probabilistic distillation protocol by presenting an analytical expression of the maximal average distillable coherence of a general state and constructing the corresponding operation achieving this bound. Quantum Zeno effect is conventionally interpreted by the assumption of the wave-packet collapse, in which does not involve the duration of measurement. However, we predict duration $\tau_m$ of each measurement will appear in quantum Zeno effect by a dynamical approach. Moreover, there exists a model-free critical measurement time, which quantum Zeno effect does not occur when $\tau_m$ takes some special values. In order to give these predictions, we first present a description of quantum Zeno effect in the Heisenberg picture, which is based on the expectation value of an observable and its fluctuation. Then we present a general proof for quantum Zeno effect in the Heisenberg picture, which is independent of the concrete systems. Finally, we calculate the average population and relative fluctuation after $N$ successive measurements in XX model, which agrees with our prediction about the critical measurement time., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

We explore the spatial enantioseparation of gaseous chiral molecules for the cyclic three-level systems coupled with three electromagnetic fields. Due to molecular rotations, the specific requirements of the polarization directions of the three electromagnetic fields lead to the space-dependent part of the overall phase of the coupling strengths. Thus, the overall phase of the coupling strengths, which differs with $\pi$ for the enantiomers in the cyclic three-level model of chiral molecules, varies intensely in the length scale of the typical wavelength of the applied electromagnetic fields. Under the induced gauge potentials resulting from the space-dependent part of the overall phase and the space-dependent intensities of coupling strengths, we further show spatial enantioseparation for typical parameters of gaseous chiral molecules., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

The excess work performed in a heat-engine process with given finite operation time \tau is bounded by the thermodynamic length, which measures the distance during the relaxation along a path in the space of the thermodynamic state. Unfortunately, the thermodynamic length, as a guidance for the heat engine optimization, is beyond the experimental measurement. We propose to measure the thermodynamic length \mathcal{L} through the extrapolation of finite-time measurements \mathcal{L}(\tau)=\int_{0}^{\tau}[P_{\mathrm{ex}}(t)]^{1/2}dt via the excess power P_{\mathrm{ex}}(t). The current proposal allows to measure the thermodynamic length for a single control parameter without requiring extra effort to find the optimal control scheme. In this paper, we systematically study the work statistics for quantum phase transition. For a quantum system approached by an anisotropic conformal field theory near the critical point, the driving protocols is divided into three different regimes for different quench rates, which reflects the competition between the frozen time and the quench time scale. In each regime, we find universal scaling behaviors in work statistics (after renormalization). It is shown that the critical exponents are determined by the space-time dimension $d$, the dynamical critical exponent $z$, the correlation-length exponent $\nu$, and the power-law protocols. These universal scalings in nonequilibrium process may be found in quantum phase transition by measuring the Loschmidt echo or the Ramsey interferometry.

State functions play important roles in thermodynamics. Different from the process function, such as the exchanged heat $\delta Q$ and the applied work $\delta W$, the change of the state function can be expressed as an exact differential. We prove here that, for a generic thermodynamic system, only the inverse of the temperature, namely $1/T$, can serve as the integration factor for the exchanged heat $\delta Q$. The uniqueness of the integration factor invalidates any attempt to define other state functions associated with the exchanged heat, and in turn, reveals the incorrectness of defining the entransy $E_{vh}=C_VT^2 /2$ as a state function by treating $T$ as an integration factor. A workshop on The Next Generation Gamma-Ray Sources sponsored by the Office of Nuclear Physics at the Department of Energy, was held November 17--19, 2016 in Bethesda, Maryland. The goals of the workshop were to identify basic and applied research opportunities at the frontiers of nuclear physics that would be made possible by the beam capabilities of an advanced laser Compton beam facility. To anchor the scientific vision to realistically achievable beam specifications using proven technologies, the workshop brought together experts in the fields of electron accelerators, lasers, and optics to examine the technical options for achieving the beam specifications required by the most compelling parts of the proposed research programs. An international assembly of participants included current and prospective $\gamma$-ray beam users, accelerator and light-source physicists, and federal agency program managers. Sessions were organized to foster interactions between the beam users and facility developers, allowing for information sharing and mutual feedback between the two groups. The workshop findings and recommendations are summarized in this whitepaper.

The efficiency at the maximum power (EMP) for finite-time Carnot engines established with the low-dissipation model, relies significantly on the assumption of the inverse proportion scaling of the irreversible entropy generation $\Delta S^{(\mathrm{ir})}$ on the operation time $\tau$, i.e., $\Delta S^{(\mathrm{ir})}\propto1/\tau$. The optimal operation time of the finite-time isothermal process for EMP has to be within the valid regime of the inverse proportion scaling. Yet, such consistency was not tested due to the unknown coefficient of the $1/\tau$-scaling. In this paper, using a two-level atomic heat engine as an illustration, we reveal that the optimization of the finite-time Carnot engines with the low-dissipation model is self-consistent only in the regime of $\eta_{\mathrm{C}}\ll1$, where $\eta_{\mathrm{C}}$ is the Carnot efficiency. In the large-$\eta_{\mathrm{C}}$ regime, the operation time for EMP obtained with the low-dissipation model is not within the valid regime of the $1/\tau$-scaling, and the exact EMP is found to surpass the well-known bound $\eta_{+}=\eta_{\mathrm{C}}/(2-\eta_{\mathrm{C}})$, Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, Comments are welcome

Inside a closed many-body system undergoing the unitary evolution, a small partition of the whole system exhibits a local relaxation. If the total degrees of freedom of the whole system is a large but finite number, such a local relaxation would come across a recurrence after a certain time, namely, the dynamics of the local system suddenly appear random after a well-ordered oscillatory decay process. It is found in this paper, for a collection of $N$ two-level systems (TLSs), the local relaxation of one TLS within has a hierarchy structure hiding in the randomness after such a recurrence: similar recurrences appear in a periodical way, and the later recurrence brings in stronger randomness than the previous one. Both analytical and numerical results that we obtained well explains such hierarchy recurrences: the population of the local TLS (as an open system) diffuses out and regathers back periodically due the finite-size effect of the bath [the remaining $(N-1)$ TLSs]. We also find that the total correlation entropy, which sums up the entropy of all the $N$ TLSs, approximately exhibit a monotonic increase; in contrast, the entropy of each single TLS increases and decreases from time to time, and the entropy of the whole $N$-body system keeps constant during the unitary evolution., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, comments are welcome

We experimentally investigate the effect of geometrical anisotropy for buoyant ellipsoidal particles rising in a still fluid. All other parameters, such as the Galileo number $Ga \approx 6000$ and the particle density ratio $\Gamma \approx 0.53$ are kept constant. The geometrical aspect ratio, $\chi$, of the particle is varied systematically from $\chi$ = 0.2 (oblate) to 5 (prolate). Based on tracking all degrees of particle motion, we identify six regimes characterised by distinct rise dynamics. Firstly, for $0.83 \le \chi \le 1.20$, increased rotational dynamics are observed and the particle flips over semi-regularly in a "tumbling"-like motion. Secondly, for oblate particles with $0.29 \le \chi \le 0.75$, planar regular "zig-zag" motion is observed, where the drag coefficient is independent of $\chi$. Thirdly, for the most extreme oblate geometries ($\chi \le 0.25$) a "flutter"-like behaviour is found, characterised by precession of the oscillation plane and an increase in the drag coefficient. For prolate geometries, we observed two coexisting oscillation modes that contribute to complex trajectories: the first is related to oscillations of the pointing vector and the second corresponds to a motion perpendicular to the particle's symmetry axis. We identify a "longitudinal" regime ($1.33 \le \chi \le 2.5$), where both modes are active and a different one, the "broadside"-regime ($3 \le \chi\le 4$), where only the second mode is present. Remarkably, for the most prolate particles ($\chi = 5$), we observe an entirely different "helical" rise with completely unique features., Comment: 46 pages, 20 figures

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are mysterious millisecond-duration radio transients of unknown origin observed at extragalactic distances. It has been long speculated that magnetars are the engine powering repeating bursts from FRB sources, but no convincing evidence has been collected so far\cite{sun19}. Recently, the Galactic magnetar SGR J1935+2154 entered an active phase by emitting intense soft Gamma-ray bursts. One FRB-like event with two peaks (FRB 200428) and a luminosity slightly lower than the faintest extragalactic FRBs was detected from the source, in association with a soft Gamma-ray / hard X-ray flare. Here we report an eight-hour targeted radio observational campaign comprising four sessions and assisted by multi-wavelength (optical and hard X-rays) data. During the third session, 29 soft Gamma-ray repeater (SGR) bursts were detected in Gamma-ray energies. Throughout the observing period, we detected no single dispersed pulsed emission coincident with the arrivals of SGR bursts, but unfortunately we were not observing when the FRB was detected. The non-detection places a fluence upper limit that is eight orders of magnitude lower than the fluence of FRB 200428. Our results suggest that FRB -- SGR burst associations are rare. FRBs may be highly relativistic and geometrically beamed, or FRB-like events associated with SGR bursts may have narrow spectra and characteristic frequencies outside the observed band. As an analogy of best separable approximation (BSA) in the framework of entanglement theory, here we concentrate on the notion of best incoherent approximation, with application to characterizing and quantifying quantum coherence. From both analytical and numerical perspectives, we have demonstrated that the weight-based coherence measure displays some unusual properties, in sharp contrast to other popular coherence quantifiers. First, by deriving a closed formula for qubit states, we have showed the weight-based coherence measure exhibits a rich (geometrical) structure even in this simplest case. Second, we have identified the existence of mixed maximally coherent states (MMCS) with respect to this coherence measure and discussed the characteristic feature of MMCS in high-dimensional Hilbert spaces. Especially, we present several important families of MMCS by gaining insights from the numerical simulations. Moreover, it is pointed out that some considerations in this work can be generalized to general convex resource theories and a numerical method of improving the computational efficiency for finding the BSA is also discussed., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Computational physics problems often have a common set of aspects to them that any particular numerical code will have to address. Because these aspects are common to many problems, having a framework already designed and ready to use will not only speed the development of new codes, but also enhance compatibility between codes. Some of the most common aspects of computational physics problems are: a grid, a clock which tracks the flow of the simulation, and a set of models describing the dynamics of various quantities on the grid. Having a framework that could deal with these basic aspects of the simulation in a common way could provide great value to computational scientists by solving various numerical and class design issues that routinely arise. This paper describes the newly developed computational framework that we have built for rapidly prototyping new physics codes. This framework, called turboPy, is a lightweight physics modeling framework based on the design of the particle-in-cell code turboWAVE. It implements a class (called Simulation) which drives the simulation and manages communication between physics modules, a class (called PhysicsModule) which handles the details of the dynamics of the various parts of the problem, and some additional classes such as a Grid class and a Diagnostic class to handle various ancillary issues that commonly arise.

Based on the concepts of quantum synchronization and quantum phase synchronization proposed by A. Mari \textit{et al.} in Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 103605 (2013), we introduce and characterize the measure of a more generalized quantum synchronization called quantum $\varphi$-synchronization under which the pairs of variables have the same amplitude and possess the same $\varphi$ phase shift. Naturally, quantum synchronization and quantum anti-synchronization become special cases of quantum $\varphi$-synchronization. Their relations and differences are also discussed. To illustrate these theories, we investigate the quantum $\varphi$-synchronization and quantum phase synchronization phenomena of two coupled optomechanical systems with periodic modulation and show that quantum $\varphi$-synchronization is more general as a measure of synchronization. We study photon emission by an ensemble of two-level systems, with strong inhomogeneous broadening and coupled to a cavity mode whose frequency has linear time-dependence. The analysis shows that, regardless the distribution of energy level splittings, a sharp phase transition occurs between the weak and strong cooperative emission phases near a critical photonic frequency sweeping rate. The associated scaling exponent is determined. We suggest that this phase transition can be observed in an ensemble of negatively charged NV centers in diamond interacting with a microwave half-wavelength cavity mode even in the regime of weak coupling and at strong disorder of two-level splittings., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

As an analogy of fully entangled fraction in the framework of entanglement theory, we have introduced the notion of quantum coherence fraction $C_{\mathcal{F}}$, which quantifies the closeness between a given state and the set of maximally coherent states. By providing an alternative formulation of the robustness of coherence $C_{\mathcal{R}}$, we have elucidated the relationship between quantum coherence fraction and the normalized version of $C_{\mathcal{R}}$ (i.e., $\overline{C}_{\mathcal{R}}$), where the role of genuinely incoherent operations (GIO) is highlighted. Numerical simulation shows that though as expected $C_{\mathcal{F}}$ is upper bounded by $\overline{C}_{\mathcal{R}}$, $C_{\mathcal{F}}$ constitutes a good approximation to $\overline{C}_{\mathcal{R}}$ especially in low-dimensional Hilbert spaces. Even more intriguingly, we can analytically prove that $C_{\mathcal{F}}$ is exactly equivalent to $\overline{C}_{\mathcal{R}}$ for qubit and qutrit states. We explore an unusual type of quantum matter that can be realized by qubits having different physical origin. Interactions in this matter are described by essentially different coupling operators for all qubits. We show that at least the simplest such models, which can be realized with localized states in Dirac materials, satisfy integrability conditions that we use to describe pseudospin dynamics in a linearly time-dependent magnetic field. Generalizing to an arbitrary number of qubits, we construct a spin Hamiltonian, which we call the gamma-magnet. This system does not conserve polarization of any spin and the net spin polarization. Nevertheless, for arbitrarily strong interactions, nonadiabatic dynamics, and any initial eigenstate, we find that quantum interference suppresses spin-flips. This behavior resembles many-body localization but occurs in phase space of many spins rather than real space. This effect may not have a counterpart in classical physics and can be a signature of a new type of spin ordering, which is different from both disordered spin glasses and ordered phases of spin lattices., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

The Borexino detector measures solar neutrino fluxes via neutrino-electron elastic scattering. Observed spectra are determined by the solar-$\nu_{e}$ survival probability $P_{ee}(E)$, and the chiral couplings of the neutrino and electron. Some theories of physics beyond the Standard Model postulate the existence of Non-Standard Interactions (NSI's) which modify the chiral couplings and $P_{ee}(E)$. In this paper, we search for such NSI's, in particular, flavor-diagonal neutral current interactions that modify the $\nu_e e$ and $\nu_\tau e$ couplings using Borexino Phase II data. Standard Solar Model predictions of the solar neutrino fluxes for both high- and low-metallicity assumptions are considered. No indication of new physics is found at the level of sensitivity of the detector and constraints on the parameters of the NSI's are placed. In addition, with the same dataset the value of $\sin^2\theta_W$ is obtained with a precision comparable to that achieved in reactor antineutrino experiments., Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures.
