113. Developing Intercultural Communicative Competence: Formative Assessment Tools for Mandarin as a Foreign Language

Abstract

Purpose: Intercultural communicative competence (ICC) is important in intercultural exchange, to address problems and conflicts which may arise due to miscommunication that results from interlocutors' diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Interlocutors may have different perceptions and interpretations of communicative behaviour. However, cultural and intercultural aspects seem to be ignored in teaching Mandarin as a foreign language (MFL) in Malaysian higher education institutions. Hence, the ICC level among local MFL learners is unknown. In this study, formative assessments were designed in a culturally integrated MFL module to investigate learners' level of ICC in a selected Malaysian polytechnic. Methodology: The polytechnic was selected as cultural competency was incorporated in the MFL course. A design and developmental research was carried out to design formative assessment for ICC based on experts' feedback. The assessment comprised Intercultural Discussion and Reflections, Cultural Discovery, Cultural Quizzes and an Intercultural Communicative Task. They were implemented to assess learners' ICC. Findings: The results indicate that different forms of assessment were suitable for assessing the respective competences, and that multiple forms of formative assessment should be employed to assess and improve MFL learners' ICC. Significance: Instructors in higher education could apply these forms of formative assessment to develop ICC among their MFL learners. The assessments could also be extended to intercultural communication competence development in other languages, which is important in a multicultural and globalized society.

145. The benefits of participation in school extra music activities as seen by Hong Kong primary school students aged 9-12

Abstract

Instrumental music is one of the extra-curricular activities that students may join after school hours to acquire more music experience. There is limited number of studies in Hong Kong investigating the effect of group instrumental music training on primary school children. The impact of school-based music training on both academic and psychological issue is not well understood. This research aims at revealing the reasons that make students participate in these extra-curricular music activities, the benefits that students perceive in the music activities and how these music activities affect their aspiration in learning. This research focuses to investigate deeply in one context of a primary school in Hong Kong of the real life experience of students aged 9-12 about the above issue. This research indicates the factors motivating students to participate in music activities which are mainly parental, family and peer influence. Enjoying musical activities, listening to music, attending concerts, playing in music groups have demonstrated positive effects on the students. The support of parents, family, peers and self-beliefs are also important in sustaining students in their musical journey. In the research, students have reported their beliefs that music participation imparts some extra musical benefits. Interviews with parents and students indicate the benefits student perceived in the music participation include gaining love and enjoyment in music, developing social skills of teamwork, sense of belonging, communication, cooperation, confidence and satisfaction in their music playing with friends. Concentration, self-discipline, self-motivation, self-accomplishment, listening and memory skills are enhanced which help in other areas of learning. In addition, the research reveals that music makes students feel relaxed and releases their pressure from the heavy-loaded school work.

Abstract

Background The PedsQL 3.0 End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Module is a well-accepted instrument internationally but it is not available in the local language. We aimed to validate the Bahasa Melayu (Malay language) version and determine the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) scores amongst children with CKD in Malaysia. Methods The source questionnaire in English was translated into Bahasa Melayu. Linguistic validation guidelines by the MAPI Research Institute were followed. The already validated Bahasa Melayu PedsQL 4.0 Generic Core Scales was used for comparison. Sociodemographic data were collected during the interview. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS version 25.0. Results Sixty-nine children aged 8 to 18 with CKD stages 4 and 5, with or without dialysis, and their caregivers were recruited. Mean age was 12.62 ± 2.77 (SD). Evaluation of the PedsQL 3.0 ESRD Module Bahasa Melayu version demonstrated good internal consistency (Cronbach alpha 0.82). There was good agreement between child self-report and parent proxy report in all domains; average intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) were 0.78, 95% CI (0.71, 0.84). Scores obtained from Generic 4.0 scales correlated with the disease-specific ESRD 3.0 scale, Spearman's rho = 0.32, p = 0.007. The Kruskal-Wallis H test indicated that there were no significant differences between stages of CKD and their respective mean HRQoL score, [chi].sup.2(2) = 2.88, p = 0.236. Conclusions The PedsQL 3.0 ESRD Module Bahasa Melayu version is a reliable and feasible tool for cross-cultural adaptation.
