This paper presents the descriptions of four new species of the genus Enicospilus Stephens, 1835 and ten species of Ophion Fabricius, 1798: Enicospilus (Allocamptus) izquierdoae sp. nov., E. borderai sp. nov., E. erebus sp. nov., Ophion albanicus sp. nov., O. anatolicus sp. nov., O. canariensis sp. nov., O. castilloae sp. nov., O. cypriotus sp. nov., O. incarinatus sp. nov., O. trochantellatus sp. nov., O. mediterraneus sp. nov., O. pusillus sp. nov., O. rugipleuris sp. nov. and Ophion ziczac sp. nov. Additionally, a new genus Nyxia gen. nov. and its only known species Nyxia shawi sp. nov. is decribed from Portugal. Enicospilus arcuatus (Brullé, 1846) syn. nov. and Enicospilus hannibalis (Kohl, 1905) syn. nov. are junior synonyms of Enicospilus inflexus (Ratzeburg, 1844). Enicospilus ramidulops Scaramozzino, 1986 syn. nov. is a junior synonym of Enicospilus bimaculator Aubert, 1979. The mainly Afrotropical species Enicospilus antefurcalis (Szépligeti, 1908) is a new record for the Palaearctic realm. A short discussion on the presumed diversity of Western Palaearctic Ophioninae is given.

The sucrose non-fermenting 1-related protein kinases (SnRKs) mediate plant signalling pathways in response to different cues by phosphorylating target proteins. While full complement of these genes has been reported in several families, such information remains obscure in Solanaceae to date. Through a genome-wide identification approach, we report 40 SnRK members in the tomato genome. Multiple alignments and phylogenetic analysis grouped the identified genes in SnRK1, SnRK2, and SnRK3 subfamilies. SnRK1 subfamily comprises only two members, whereas SnRK3 being the largest category, is constituted by 30 members in tomato. Ten members of the SnRK3 subfamily are present in four tandemly duplicated chromosomal blocks. Transcript profiling of these genes during tomato development identified SlSnRK2.9 and SlSnRK3.3 with root-specific and SlSnRK2.7b with ripening-preferential mRNA abundance. The mRNA profiling of these genes by RNA-sequencing and qPCR revealed that SlSnRK3.10a, SlSnRK3.15a, and SlSnRK3.26 are activated at varying levels under phosphate (Pi) starvation. In-silico analysis anticipated a common set of proteins interacts with the selected phosphorus starvation inducible (PSI) SlSnRK genes. Overall, the present study identifies a set of PSI SnRKs in tomato and provides a comprehensive framework for their functional characterization in Solanaceae in the future.

Cheilanthes qiaojiaensis, a new fern of Pteridaceae subfamily Cheilanthoideae, is described and illustrated. Morphologically, C. qiaojiaensis is similar to C. chusana and Aleuritopteris rufa in having plants hairiness and laminae elliptic-lanceolate, but the new species has plants covered with dense hairs throughout, petiole and rachis flattened to narrowly grooved, and false indusia wide and continuous. The phylogenetic analysis also shows that C. qiaojiaensis is not a close relative of either A. rufa or C. chusana.

Here, the first record of Seira dowlingi from Asia is reported and its newly generated mitogenome is compared with Neotropical specimens. Molecular analyses were performed based on low-coverage whole-genome sequencing and the complete mitogenome was assembled using NovoPlasty. Our results show that the Chinese specimens have the same color pattern, chaetotaxy, and almost identical mitogenomes, differing only on three nucleotides located in protein-coding genes. A maximum-likelihood phylogeny based on 13 mitochondrial genes was made and the specimens’ similarity was confirmed, as well as its phylogenetic position. Considering the large geographic distance between the American and the Asiatic populations, we believe that the presence of S. dowlingi in China is a result of anthropogenic introduction. The data generated here can be useful for further phylogeographic studies related to Seirinae subfamily or Collembola fauna in general.

The first two complete mitogenomes of the leafhopper genus Cladolidia (C. biungulata and C. robusta) were sequenced and annotated to further explore the phylogeny of Cladolidia. Both the newly sequenced mitogenomes have a typical circular structure, with lengths of 15,247 and 15,376 bp and A + T contents of 78.2% and 78%, respectively. We identified a highly conserved genome organization in the two Cladolidia spp. through comparative analysis that included the following assessments: genome content, gene order, nucleotide composition, codon usage, amino acid composition, and tRNA secondary structure. Moreover, we detected the base heterogeneity of Cicadellidae mitogenomic data and constructed phylogenetic trees using the nucleotide alignments of 12 subfamilies of 58 leafhopper species. We noted a weak heterogeneity in the base composition among the Cicadellidae mitogenomes. Phylogenetic analyses showed that the monophyly of each subfamily was generally well supported in the family Cicadellidae; the main topology was as follows: (Deltocephalinae + (Treehoppers + ((Megophthalminae + (Macropsinae + (Hylicinae + (Coelidiinae +Iassinae)) + (Idiocerinae + (Cicadellinae + (Typhlocybinae + (Mileewinae + (Evacanthinae +Ledrinae)))))))))). Within Coelidiinae, phylogenetic analyses revealed that C. biungulata and C. robusta belong to Coelidiinae and the monophyly of Cladolidia is well supported. In addition, on the basis of complete mitogenome phylogenetic analysis and the comparison of morphological characteristics, we further confirm the genus Olidiana as a paraphyletic group, suggesting that the genus may need taxonomic revisions.

Cyclotides, a class of macrocyclic plant peptides, characterized by a cyclic backbone and three inter-locking disulfide bonds, may be divided into two major structural subfamilies, Möbius and Bracelet, based on the presence or absence of a specific proline residue. The present study describes the suite of cyclotides obtained from Clitoria ternatea, characterized by LC-MS and MS/MS techniques. Notable variations in product ion distributions were observed in cyclotides belonging to different structural subfamilies based on the number and positions of proline residues. For instance, Cter M which is an abundant Möbius cyclotide in this plant containing three proline residues, displayed distinct b- and y- ion characteristics in the MS/MS spectra compared to Cliotide T1, another commonly identified cyclotide but belonging to the Bracelet subfamily having two proline residues. The distinct fragmentation pattern of prototypical cyclotides of each structural subfamily, determined by Xxx-Pro bond fragmentation, was used to rapidly identify and sequence a novel cyclotide ctr pep 30 from this plant.

The structure of Haller’s organ, the main sensory organ of hard ticks, studied by methods of scanning electron microscopy, was analyzed on the basis of my own and literary data in 40 species of the subfamily Amblyomminae (Metastriata), representatives of the genera Amblyomma Koch, 1844 (10 species, including 3 species earlier separated as the genus Aponomma), Anomalohimalaya Filippova, 1994 (1 species), Dermacentor Koch, 1844 (6 species), Haemaphysalis Koch, 1844 (6 species), Hyalomma Koch, 1844 (6 species), Margaropus Pomerantzev, 1947 (1 species), and Rhipicephalus Koch, 1844 (10 species, including 2 species earlier separated as the genus Boophilus). The main taxonomic characters were distinguished, including the number and topography of sensilla in the anterior pit and the shape of the capsular orifice. It was shown that the structure of Haller’s organ is specific of separate genera, whereas differences between species and subgenera are insignificant. On the basis of these results, latest revisions of the Metastriata, based exclusively on molecular and genetic data seem doubtful. Comparison of the obtained data with the existing views on the taxonomy of the subfamily Amblyomminae is performed.

International audience; Two new peculiar mid-Cretaceous braconid genera, Megalyrhyssalus gen. nov. (type species Megalyrhyssalus clavicornis sp. nov.) and Stephanorhyssalus gen. nov. (type species Stephanorhyssalus longiscapus sp. nov.), are described and illustrated from Burmese amber. According to the particular morphology and wing venation of Megalyrhyssalus gen. nov. a new subfamily Megalyrhyssalinae subfam. nov. is created. The subfamily Seneciobraconinae is synonymised under Protorhyssalinae (syn. nov.). Additionally, a key to the genera of Braconidae having second recurrent vein (2m-cu) in forewing is provided.

Eleven species of geometrid moths from the subfamily Ennominae (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) are reported for the first time from Amurskaya Oblast at the extreme northwestern limit of the distribution of mixed broadleaved – Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis) forests, at a great distance from their closest habitats in Khabarovsky Krai and Primorsky Krai, Russian Far East: Eilicrinia nuptaria Bremer, 1864, Eudjakonovia emundata (Christoph, 1881), Menophra senilis (Butler, 1878), Ectropis excellens (Butler, 1884), Ectropis aigneri Prout, 1930, Mesastrape fulguraria (Walker, 1860), Arichanna tetrica (Butler, 1878), Agriopis dira (Butler, 1878), Larerannis orthogrammaria (Wehrli, 1927), Phigalia verecundaria (Leech, 1897), and Phanerothyris sinearia (Guenée, 1858).

Summary Azalea belongs to Rhododendron, which is one of the largest genera of flowering plants and is well known for the diversity and beauty in its more than 1000 woody species. Rhododendron contains two distinct groups: the most high‐altitude and a few low‐altitude species; however, the former group is difficult to be domesticated for urban landscaping, and their evolution and adaptation are little known. Rhododendron ovatum has broad adaptation in low‐altitude regions but possesses evergreen characteristics like high‐altitude species, and it has floral fragrance that is deficient in most cultivars. Here we report the chromosome‐level genome assembly of R. ovatum, which has a total length of 549 Mb with scaffold N50 of 41 Mb and contains 41 264 predicted genes. Genomic micro‐evolutionary analysis of R. ovatum in comparison with two high‐altitude Rhododendron species indicated that the expansion genes in R. ovatum were significantly enriched in defence responses, which may account for its adaptability in low altitudes. The R. ovatum genome contains much more terpene synthase genes (TPSs) compared with the species that lost floral fragrance. The subfamily b members of TPS are involved in the synthesis of sesquiterpenes as well as monoterpenes and play a major role in flora scent biosynthesis and defence responses. Tandem duplication is the primary force driving expansion of defence‐responsive genes for extensive adaptability to the low‐altitude environments. The R. ovatum genome provides insights into low‐altitude adaptation and gain or loss of floral fragrance for Rhododendron species, which are valuable for alpine plant domestication and floral scent breeding.

Soil salinization is a vital factor that restricts the efficient and sustainable development of global agriculture. Studies enlightened that the C2H2 zinc finger proteins (C2H2-ZFP) were involved in regulating the stress response in plants. However, knowledge of the C2H2-ZFP subfamily C1 (ZAT; Zinc finger of Arabidopsis thaliana) in cotton is still a mystery. In this study, 47, 45, 94, and 88 ZAT genes were obtained from diploid A2, D5 and tetraploid AD1, AD2 cotton genomes, respectively. The function of hybridization and allopolyploidy in the evolutionary linkage of allotetraploid cotton was explained by the family of ZAT gene in 4 species. Duplication of gene activities indicates that the family of ZAT gene of cotton evolution was under strong purifying selection. The integration of previous transcriptome data related to NaCl stress, strongly suggests the GhZAT34 and GhZAT79 may interact with salt resistance in upland cotton. The expression level of certain ZAT genes, higher seed germination rate of transgenic Arabidopsis and gene- silenced cotton revealed that both genes were involved in the salt tolerance of upland cotton. This study may pave the substantial understandings into the role of ZATs genes in plants as well as suggest appropriate candidate genes for breeding of cotton varieties against salinity tolerance.

Eight new species of the genus Laena Dejean, 1821 (subfamily Lagriinae, tribe Laenini) from Yunnan Province of China were described and illustrated: L. acutidentata Wei & Ren, sp. nov., L. brevicarina Wei & Ren, sp. nov., L. dongchuana Zhao & Ren, sp. nov., L. glabridentipa Wei & Ren, sp. nov., L. nuda Zhao & Ren, sp. nov., L. raropuncta Wei & Ren, sp. nov., L. rugulosa Wei & Ren, sp. nov. and L. spinicla Wei & Ren, sp. nov.. Several ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters involved in the arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis and nodulation have been identified. We describe three previously unreported ABC subfamily B transporters, named AMN1, AMN2, and AMN3 (ABCB for mycorrhization and nodulation), that are expressed early during infection by rhizobia and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. These ABCB transporters are strongly expressed in symbiotically infected tissues, including in root-hair cells with rhizobial infection threads and arbusculated cells. During nodulation, the expression of these genes is highly induced by rhizobia and purified Nod factors and is dependent on DMI3 but is not dependent on other known major regulators of infection, such as NIN, NSP1, or NSP2. During mycorrhization their expression is dependent on DMI3 and RAM1 but not on NSP1 and NSP2. Therefore, they may be commonly regulated through a distinct branch of the common symbiotic pathway. Mutants with exonic Tnt1-transposon insertions were isolated for all three genes. None of the single or double mutants showed any differences in colonization by either rhizobia or mycorrhizal fungi, but the triple amn1 amn2 amn3 mutant showed an increase in nodule number. Two new species of the subfamily Dorylinae Leach, 1815 namely Parasyscia ganeshaiahisp. nov. and Syscia indicasp. nov. are described and illustrated based on the worker caste. These species were collected in the Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary, Arunachal Pradesh, Northeast India. Keys to Parasyscia of India and Syscia of Asia are provided based on the worker caste.

Molecular phylogenetic analysis indicates that the genus Carterocephalus is not monophyletic. Based on combined molecular and morphological evidence, we propose a new genus, Pulchroptera Hou, Fan & Chiba, gen. nov., for Pamphila pulchra Leech, 1891. The adult, wing venation, and male genitalia of Pulchroptera pulchracomb. nov., Carterocephalus palaemon, and related genera are illustrated.

Conifers of the taxodiaceous grade of Cupressaceae were more diverse and widespread during the Mesozoic than they are today. The earliest diverging subfamily, Cunninghamioideae, only includes a single extant genus, but has at least 10 fossil genera. Here, two additional cunninghamioid genera are characterized on the basis of permineralized seed cones from the Upper Cretaceous of Hokkaido, Japan. These conifers display seed cone characters typical of cunninghamioids; however, they have a mosaic of characters that are not seen in any reported conifer of Cupressaceae. They are, therefore, designated as two new extinct species: Ohanastrobus hokkaidoensis gen. et sp. nov. and Nishidastrobus japonicum gen. et sp. nov. These newly reported conifers expand the taxonomic and morphological diversity of cunninghamioids. The stratigraphic and paleobiogeographic records of cunninghamioids and other fossil Cupressaceae with foliate seed cones indicate they peak in diversity during the Cretaceous. The living genera Taiwania and Cunninghamia appear during the Albian and Campanian, respectively, and maintain a nearly continuous fossil record through to today, while nearly all other extinct genera of Cupressaceae with foliate cones disappear by the close of the Campanian. As more ancient cunninghamioids are recovered, our understanding of macroevolutionary patterns of this once diverse lineage will be further elucidated.

Hyaloklossia Labbé ,1896 (Alveolata: Apicomplexa) is a monotypic genus of renal coccidia found in anurans, particularly in the edible frog Pelophylax kl. esculentus (Amphibia: Anura: Ranidae), distributed in different parts of Europe. Here we propose a new Hyaloklossia species from the Tokyo daruma pond frog, Pelophylax porosus porosus. The coccidium detected in the renal tissue of P. p. porosus shared some morphological characteristics with the type species, Hyaloklossia lieberkuehni (Labbé, 1894), reported from P. kl. esculentus. However, in addition to size differences in several oocyst and sporocyst features between these parasites, phylogenetic analysis of gene fragments from two nuclear ribosomal loci and the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1, exposed distinct genetic differences between H. lieberkuehni and our new species. Although our analysis validated the monophyly of Hyaloklossia with some members of the Toxoplasmatinae Biocca, 1957, Cystoisosporinae Frenkel et al., 1987, and Eumonosporinae Chou et al., 2021 (Sarcocystidae Poche, 1913), comparison of genetic differences between Hyaloklossia species from P. p. porosus and H. lieberkuehni revealed the presence of a greater number of polymorphisms than that observed when comparing inter-species (Heydornia spp., Besnoisita spp.) or inter-genus (Toxoplasma vs. Neospora, Neospora vs. Hammondia, and Neospora vs. Heydornia) variabilities among members of the Sarcocystidae. This indicates that Hyaloklossia, as re-erected and defined by Modrý et al. (2001, Int. J. Syst. Evol. Microbiol. 51, 767–772), with its homoxenous life cycle, requires placement in its own subfamily. A new species of the genus Probles Förster, P. mikhailovi sp. nov., is described from Central Madagascar. The new species possesses unique venation of the fore wing previously unknown in the subfamily Tersilochinae. The genus Probles is recorded from Madagascar for the first time.

Senna is a diverse and paraphyletic genus in the subfamily Caesalpinioideae (Fabaceae Lindl.) comprising various species of industrial and medicinal value. To date, the genome-based taxonomic relationship among several Senna species remains enigmatic. Cytogenetic information is invaluable in deciphering phylogenetic relationships and evolutionary history. However, insufficient chromosomal research for many Senna species impedes comparative cytotaxonomic analyses aimed at understanding their genomic evolution. To provide additional Senna-related molecular cytogenetic information, we karyotyped 11 Senna species by employing triple-color fluorescence in situ hybridization using 5S rDNA, 45S rDNA, and Arabidopsis thaliana-type telomeric pre-labeled oligonucleotide probes. Chromosome numbers were predominantly 2n = 28, but 2n = 22 (S. marilandica) and 2n = 24 (S. uniflora) were also observed. While most species revealed only one interstitial 5S rDNA locus, except for S. uniflora which has two loci, a range of one to three 45S rDNA loci were detected at distal chromosomal regions. Additionally, we observed a hemizygous 45S rDNA locus in S. auriculata. In addition to chromosome termini, weak signals for telomeric repeats were found in interstitial regions in S. hirsuta, S. corymbosa, and S. alexandrina. These cytogenetic data can be integrated with molecular phylogenetic data for more comprehensive Senna cytotaxonomic analyses.

The gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic human pathogen that contains two different types of strains: the "classical" and the "outlier". In the "classical" strain, its bacterial subfamily I.1 lipases, such as LipA and LipC in P. aeruginosa PAO1, play critical roles in its pathogenicity. However, less is known about the subfamily I.1 lipases in the "outlier" strain, nor the evolution paths of those lipases in both types of P. aeruginosa strains. Our genome-scale investigation on I.1 lipases across different bacterial strains demonstrates the presence of one LipA-like and one new type of I.1 lipase (LipC2) in those "outlier" strains. The related genomic islands analyses further suggest that the LipC counterpart gene in the "outlier" strain was lost by gene truncation. In addition, the evolutionary analyses also indicates the horizontal LipC2 gene transfer from other gammaproteobacterial species, as well as the horizontal LipA gene transfer between two different phyla, both suggesting that the gene transfer of bacterial I.1 lipases might occur in different taxonomical levels. Our results not only provide an evidence to understand the pathogenicity among different P. aeruginosa strains, but add to the knowledge of I.1 lipase evolution in bacteria.

Cimbicidae is a small family of Tenthredinoidea, containing the largest extant true sawflies. Body length variation across the family is mapped on an existing phylogeny, and some potential drivers of body size increase are explored: intrasexual competition between males, and mimicry patterns. Body length varies substantially within Cimbicidae, the largest species being found within the subfamily Cimbicinae. The smallest species occur in Corynidinae; this subfamily has experienced an overall decrease in body size. Initially, body size increase in Cimbicinae is correlated with males becoming larger than females, increase in relative mandible size in both sexes but especially in males, and increased hind femur width/length ratio in males only. Relative mandible size decreases in Cimbex spp. + Odontocimbex and hind femur width/length in male Leptocimbex spp., respectively. The record sizes obtained in Cimbex spp. + Odontocimbex are the result of a further increase in body size, coupled with increase in hind femur width/length ratio in males. Black and yellow body colouration and other potential mimicry patterns are observed in a number of genera of Cimbicinae, but are probably not ground plan features of the subfamily. Outside Cimbicinae, black and yellow body colouration is most frequent in Corynidinae, but it cannot be decided if it is a ground plan trait of this subfamily. Intrasexual competition seems to be more likely to have influenced size increase in Cimbicinae than adaptations to mimicry.

Transcription factors (TFs) are the key regulators in plant development and stress adaptation. Understanding interactions of TFs in cotton crop is important for enhancing stress tolerance and yield enhancement. Among plant TFs, bZIPs plays a major role in seed germination, flower development, biotic and abiotic stress response. Most of the bZIP proteins from cotton remains uncharacterized and can be utilized for crop improvement. Bioinformatics analysis of bZIPs of cultivated cotton species G. hirsutum along with two sub-genome species G. arboreum and G. raimondii at one platform will certainly help the researchers in the selection of specific cotton bZIP genes according to the close alignment with Arabidopsis orthologs or sub-genome homolog for functional characterization. Cotton is an important commodity in the world economy. Transcription factors (TFs) are the key regulators in plant development and stress adaptation. Understanding interactions of TFs in cotton crop is important for enhancing stress tolerance and yield enhancement. Among plant TFs, bZIPs plays a major role in seed germination, flower development, biotic and abiotic stress response. Most of the bZIP proteins from cotton remains uncharacterized and can be utilized for crop improvement. In this study, we have carried out genome-wide identification and bioinformatics characterization of basic leucine zipper domain proteins (bZIPs) from cultivated cotton species Gossypium hirsutum along with two sub-genome species of allotetraploid cotton, Gossypium arboreum and Gossypium raimondii. A total of 228 bZIP genes of G. hirsutum, 91 bZIP genes of G. arboreum and 86 bZIP genes of G. raimondii were identified from CottonGen database. Cotton bZIP genes were annotated in standard pattern according to their match with Arabidopsis bZIPs. Multiple genes with similar bZIP designations were observed in cotton, linked to the gene duplication. Cotton bZIPs are distributed across all 13 chromosomes with varied density. Phylogenetic characterization of all three cotton species bZIPs classified them into 12 subfamilies, namely A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K and S and further into eight subgroups according to their predicted functional similarities, viz., A1, A2, A3, C1, C2, S1, S2 and S3. Subfamilies A and S are having maximum number of bZIP genes, subfamilies B, H, J and K are single-member families. Cotton bZIP protein functions were predicted from identified motifs and orthologs from varied species. Basic region leucine zipper (BRLZ) domain analysis of G. raimondii bZIPs revealed the presence of conserved basic region motif N-X7-R/K in almost all subfamily members, variants are GrbZIP62 with N-X7-I motif and GrbZIP76 with K-X7-R motif. Leucine heptad repeats motif, are also present in variant numbers from two to nine with leucine or other hydrophobic amino acid at designated position among 12 subfamily members. STRING protein interaction network analysis of G. raimondii bZIPs observed strong interaction between A and D, B and K, and C and S subfamily members.

Background The CCCH zinc finger (zf_CCCH) is a unique subfamily featured one or more zinc finger motif(s) comprising of three Cys and one His residues. The zf_CCCH family have been reported involving in various processes of plant development and adaptation. Results In this study, the zf_CCCH genes were identified via a genome-wide search and were systematically analyzed. 116 Gmzf_CCCHs were obtained and classified into seventeen subfamilies. Gene duplication and expansion analysis showed that tandem and segmental duplications contributed to the expansion of the Gmzf_CCCH gene family, and that segmental duplication play the main role. The expression patterns of Gmzf_CCCH genes were tissue-specific. Eleven domesticated genes were detected involved in the regulation of seed oil and protein synthesis as well as growth and development of soybean through GWAS and haplotype analysis for Gmzf_CCCH genes among the 164 of 302 soybeans resequencing data. Among which, 8 genes play an important role in the synthesis of seed oil or fatty acid, and the frequency of their elite haplotypes changes significantly among wild, landrace and improved cultivars, indicating that they have been strongly selected in the process of soybean domestication. Conclusions This study provides a scientific foundation for the comprehensive understanding, future cloning and functional studies of Gmzf_CCCH genes in soybean, meanwhile, it was also helpful for the improvement of soybean with high oil content.

This is the first study of the composition of leaf beetles attracted to light in Mexico. We analyze the richness, temporal abundance and similarity between four localities of tropical dry forest in Sierra de San Javier, Sonora. A total of 3217 individuals belonging to 45 morphospecies, 31 genera and 10 tribes within five subfamilies of Chrysomelidae were collected in light traps in the tropical dry forest of Sierra de San Javier, Sonora. Galerucinae was the subfamily with the greatest number of genera and species. The genera with the highest number of species were Pachybrachis Chevrolat and Alagoasa Bechyné. Eight genera were represented by two species and 21 genera by only one species. Metrioidea rugipennis (Blake) was the species with the highest number of individuals (80% of the abundance recorded). According to the taxonomic and species similarity analysis, the sites San Javier and La Barranca had the highest similarity, while the lowest values were recorded at Rancho Las Peñitas and Cañón de Lo de Campa. The low similarity between sites cannot be explained by the geographic distance since it was not a determining factor to explain the low similarity in Sierra de San Javier.

Five new species belonging to the subfamily Torodorinae of Lecithoceridae are described from Bioko Island (Equatorial Guinea), based on specimens which were collected during a short expedition on the island by the second author in 1994. The new species are three species of the genus Thubdora Park, 2018 (T. biocoica sp. nov., T. vernaculella sp. nov., and T. angustiala sp. nov.), and a new species of Ptilothyris Walsingham, 1891and Dragmatucha Meyrick, 1908 respectively (Ptylothyris ruicheensis sp. nov.; and Dragmatucha vulcaniella sp. nov.). In addition, Thubdora bilobella Park, 2018 is reported for the first time from Equatorial Guinea. Images for adults and the genitalia of all species are given.

Cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS)-restorer system is a useful tool to exploit heterosis in soybean. The major restorer gene for the M-type CMS is known as Rf-m, located in the 162.4-kb region on chromosome 16. Sequence analysis has revealed that the Rf-m locus in Glycine max consists of seven pentatricopeptide repeat (GmPPR) genes. The deduced amino acid sequences contain 8 to 14 PPR motifs, and a phylogenetic analysis grouped these GmPPR proteins into two PPR subfamilies: Glyma.16G161800 belongs to the PLS subfamily, and the P subfamily consists of Glyma.16G161900, Glyma.16G162000, Glyma.16G162100, Glyma.16G162700, Glyma.16G162800, and Glyma.16G163100. The phylogenetic analysis of seven GmPPR proteins and 27 other plant PPR proteins also showed that proteins in the same subfamilies cluster together. Comparative sequence analysis was conducted using the seven Rf-m candidate GmPPR genes from the sterile line W931A, the maintainer line W931B, and the restorer line WR016, the result showed that Glyma.16G161900 had higher polymorphism than the other candidate genes. Based on real-time quantitative RT-PCR data, all seven GmPPR genes were differentially expressed but showed constitutive expression in roots, stems, leaves, and pollen grains. Additionally, the expression level of Glyma.16G161900 in the sterile line W931A was significantly higher in all tissues than in the restorer line WR016. Taken together, these results suggest that Glyma.16G161900 is the most likely candidate for the restorer gene Rf-m. This study is the first report and analysis of candidate fertility restorer (Rf) genes encoding PPR proteins in soybean.

O estudo da ocorrência da entomofauna pode ser indicativo da qualidade ambiental de um ecossistema podendo, inclusive, prever surtos populacionais de insetos nocivos ou mesmo condições de estresse vegetal. Diante disso, este trabalho teve como objetivo analisar a flutuação de coleópteros deterioradores de madeira em fragmento de Mata Atlântica em dois povoamentos de Eucalyptus urophylla S. T. Blake, com e sem ação de fogo. O experimento foi conduzido na Floresta Nacional Mário Xavier, em Seropédica, Rio de Janeiro, durante o período de agosto/2011 a agosto/2012. Foram usadas armadilhas de impacto modelo Carvalho-47, a 1,20 m do solo e uma distância de 50 metros uma da outra, sendo três armadilhas em cada área, totalizando nove armadilhas. As coletas foram realizadas semanalmente, seguidas por identificação em nível de família em laboratório e subfamília para alguns grupos. No povoamento de E. urophylla sob ação de queimada, o número de insetos capturados nas primeiras coletas foi inferior aos demais ambientes avaliados, mas após sete meses da ocorrência da queimada, registrou-se um número superior de insetos, nesta área, em relação às demais, principalmente para a subfamília Scolytinae. No povoamento de E. urophylla que não sofreu ação do fogo, desde as primeiras coletas foi observado um número superior de indivíduos, principalmente da subfamília Scolytinae. O fogo afeta a população de coleobrocas, alterando sua ocorrência.

Mirolotmia dinocephala gen. et sp. nov. of the subtribe Brachytrupina Saussure, 1877 (the tribe Gryllini) is described from the West Papua Province of Indonesia. The name Cephalogryllini Otte et Alexander, 1983, syn. nov., is synonymised with Brachytrupina. The new genus is very similar in the general appearance to some Australian and American short-winged representatives of this subtribe, which dig burrows, but it differs in the male genitalia with three rather long lobules on the posterior epiphallic part.

The genus Neglectella Vodenicarov & Benderliev has a morphology similar to the well-known genus Oocystis, except for the numerous chloroplasts stacked in the surface layer of the cell. Neglectella subsequently experienced complex taxonomy changes with members being transferred in and out, and five species are now accepted. In this study, a new alga with morphology corresponding to this genus was collected in China and successfully cultured in laboratory. Morphological observations in light microscopy and transmission electronic microscopy (TEM) and phylogenetic analyses revealed that it is a new species, described here as Neglectella glomerata sp. nov. It differed from other Neglectella species due to a morphological difference in its unique mucilaginous colony with a large number of cells, multiple pyrenoids in each chloroplast, smaller cell size, and more elongated cell shape. Phylogenetic analyses placed this alga in the subfamily Eremosphaeroideae of the family Oocystaceae and showed its close relationship with Neglectella peisonis. Further morphological comparisons combined with phylogenetic results revealed three different morphological types in Neglectella. The new type represented by our new species may represent a transitional morphology in intermediate taxonomic position between the other two types. The diversity of morphological types in Neglectella suggests that further unknown species of this genus are likely to be discovered in the future. More collections and DNA sequence data will be needed in the future for this genus.

The mitochondrial genome can provide useful information for analyzing phylogeny and molecular evolution. In this study, the mitochondrial genome of Aphyocypris lini, an endangered and endemic minnow from southeast China, was sequenced and compared with other closely related species. The mitogenome of A. lini is 16,613 base pairs in length and consists of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, two ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes and one displacement loop region. All of PCGs initiate with the standard start codon ATG except cox1 with GTG and most PCGs terminate with TAA or TAG. The genome composition is highly A + T biased (57.3%), and exhibits a positive AT-skew (0.0614) and a negative GC-skew (−0.2205). Based on PCGs, phylogenetic analysis showed that former Ex-Danioninae subfamily was reclassified as Xenocyprididae and divided into two main clades: Opsariichthyinae and Xenocypridinae. Within Xenocypridinae, genus Aphyocypris is not monophyletic but closely related to Yaoshanicus, Nicholsicypris, and Pararasbora genera, suggesting taxonomy should be reconsidered. The present study contributes to understanding the comparative evolution and taxonomy of genus Aphyocypris.

Trachypteryx electrica sp. nov. is described from West Kazakhstan. The new species significantly differs from other species of the genus Trachypteryx Ragonot, 1893 in the female genitalia: the ductus bursae is strongly reduced and the diverticulum is absent. Two species of the subgenus Bazaria Ragonot, 1887 of the genus Gymnancyla Zeller, 1848, G. turanica sp. nov. and G. latialata sp. nov., are described from the Kyzylorda Province of Kazakhstan. Christophia constricta sp. nov. is described from the same locality. The male and female genitalia are illustrated for all species described.

Here we provide evidence for the presence of non-biting midges of the subfamily Chironominae in the Mesozoic, based on descriptions of exceptionally rare amber inclusions. The subfamily has already been reported, but based on a single and unspecified record from Late Cretaceous Taimyr amber (~84 Mya). That record is here revised and confirmed. Moreover, a new find in Burmese amber locates the temporal boundary of the subfamily back to the mid-Cretaceous (probably ~100 Mya). We describe two new genera assigned to the tribe Pseudochironomini: Mesoacentron gen. nov. with the species Mesoacentron kaluginae sp. nov. (Taimyr amber) and Palaeocentron gen. nov. with the species Palaeocentron krzeminskii sp. nov. (Burmese amber), the oldest known representative of the subfamily. The systematic position of the new taxa is discussed, and a key to the identification of adult males of extinct and extant Pseudochironomini genera is presented. Insights in the phylogeny and diversification tempo of the Chironominae and Pseudochironomini in the past are also provided.

The plastid genome (plastome), while surprisingly constant in gene order and content across most photosynthetic angiosperms, exhibits variability in several unrelated lineages. During the diversification history of the legume family Fabaceae, plastomes have undergone many rearrangements, including inversions, expansion, contraction and loss of the typical inverted repeat (IR), gene loss and repeat accumulation in both shared and independent events. While legume plastomes have been the subject of study for some time, most work has focused on agricultural species in the IR-lacking clade (IRLC) and the plant model Medicago truncatula. The subfamily Papilionoideae, which contains virtually all of the agricultural legume species, also comprises most of the plastome variation detected thus far in the family. In this study three non-papilioniods were included among 34 newly sequenced legume plastomes, along with 33 publicly available sequences, to assess plastome structural evolution in the subfamily. In an effort to examine plastome variation across the subfamily, just ~20% of the sampling represents the IRLC with the remainder selected to represent the early-branching papilionoid clades. A number of IR-related and repeat-mediated changes were identified and examined in a phylogenetic context. Recombination between direct repeats associated with ycf2 resulted in intraindividual plastome heteroplasmy. Although loss of the inverted repeat has not been reported in legumes outside of the IRLC, one genistoid taxon was found to completely lack the typical plastome IR. The role of the IR and non-IR repeats in the progression of plastome change is discussed.

Cetacea, whales, dolphins and porpoises, form an order of mammals adapted to aquatic life. Their transition to an aquatic habitat resulted in exceptional protection against cellular insults, including oxidative and osmotic stress. Here, we considered the structure and molecular evolution of the superoxide dismutase (SOD) gene family, which encodes essential enzymes in the mammalian antioxidant system, in the superorder Cetartiodactyla. To this end, we juxtaposed cetaceans and their closest extant relatives (order Artiodactyla). We identified 94 genes in 23 species, of which 70 are bona fide intact genes. Although the SOD gene family is conserved in Cetartiodactyla, lineage-specific gene duplications and deletions were observed. Phylogenetic analyses show that the SOD2 subfamily diverged from a clade containing SOD1 and SOD3, suggesting that cytoplasmic, extracellular, and mitochondrial SODs have started down independent evolutionary paths. Specific-amino acid changes (e.g., K130N in SOD2) that may enhance ROS elimination were identified in cetaceans. In silico analysis suggests that the core transcription factor repertoire of cetartiodactyl SOD genes may include Sp1, NF-κB, Nrf2, and AHR. Putative transcription factors binding sites responding to hypoxia were (e.g., Suppressor of Hairless; Su(H)) found in the cetacean SOD1 gene. We found significant evidence for positive selection in cetaceans using codon models. Cetaceans with different diving abilities also show divergent evolution of SOD1 and SOD2. Our genome-wide analysis of SOD genes helps clarify their relationship and evolutionary trajectory and identify putative functional changes in cetaceans.

GRAS, a key transcription factor in plant growth and development, has not yet been reported in quinoa. Therefore, this study used the latest quinoa genomic data to identify and analyse GRAS genes in quinoa: 52 GRAS genes were identified in quinoa, these being unevenly distributed on 19 chromosomes. Fragment duplication and tandem duplication events were the main reasons for the expansion of the GRAS gene family in quinoa. Protein sequence analysis showed that there were some differences in amino acid numbers and isoelectric points amongst different subfamilies, and the main secondary structures were α-helix and random coil. The CqGRAS gene was divided into 14 subfamilies based on results from phylogenetic analysis. The genes located in the same subfamily had similar gene structures, conserved motifs, and three-level models. Promoter region analysis showed that the GRAS family genes contained multiple homeostasis elements that responded to hormones and adversity. GO enrichment indicated that CqGRAS genes were involved in biological processes, cell components, and molecular functions. By analysing the expression of CqGRAS genes in different tissues and different treatments, it was found that GRAS genes had obvious differential expression in different tissues and stress, which indicates that GRAS genes had tissue or organ expression specificity and thus might play an important role in response to stress. These results laid a foundation for further functional research on the GRAS gene family in quinoa.

The innate immune system plays an important role in host defense against pathogenic infections. In the innate immune system, several families of innate pattern recognition receptors, including Toll-like receptors, RIG-I-like receptors, NOD-like receptors (NLRs), and DNA receptors (cytosolic sensors for DNA), are known to play vital roles in detecting and responding to various pathogens. In this study, we identified 29 NLRs in turbot including 4 NLRs from subfamily A: NOD1, NOD2, CIITA, NLRC5, 1 NLR from subfamily B: NLRB1, 21 NLRs from subfamily C: NLR-C3.1∼NLRC3.21, 1 from NLRX subfamily, and two that do not fall within these subfamilies: APAF1, NWD1. Phylogenetic analysis showed that these NLR genes were clearly divided into five subfamilies. Protein-protein interaction network analysis showed that some of these NLR genes shared same interacting genes and might participate in signal transductions associated with immunity. The evolutionary pressure selection analysis showed that the Ka/Ks ratios for all detected NLR genes were much less than one, implying more synonymous changes than non-synonymous changes. In addition, tissue expression analysis showed that the relative higher expression levels were observed in gill, skin and intestine. Meanwhile, NLR genes expression after bacterial infection results showed that most NLR genes participated in the process of defense of V. anguillarum and A. salmonicida infections in mucosal tissues. Taken together, identification and expression profiling analysis of NLR genes can provide valuable information for further functional characterization of these genes in turbot.

A novel papillomavirus (PV) was detected in farmed wels catfish (Silurus glanis) in Hungary showing clinical signs resembling those of wels catfish herpesvirus disease. The whole genome of Silurus glanis papillomavirus 1 (SgPV1) was identified using next-generation sequencing. The 5,612-bp complete genome contains four predicted protein coding regions (E1, E2, L1, and L2), which seem to have homologues in every PV genome sequenced to date. Five complete fish PV genome sequences are available in the GenBank database. Their genomes range between 5,748 and 6,086 bp and contain the minimal PV backbone genes E1, E2, L2, and L1, unlike PVs of higher vertebrates, which have larger genomes (6.8-8.6 kbp) and additional (onco)genes. Considering the current species demarcation criteria for the family Papillomaviridae, the establishment of a novel species named "Nunpapillomavirus siluri" is proposed for the SgPV1 in a novel genus, "Nunpapillomavirus", in the subfamily Secondpapillomavirinae.

Three genera of subfamily Nolinae Hampson are reported for the first time from Laos, with three new records: Mokfanola crustaceata Laszlo, Ronkay & Witt, 2010 , Varganola flavibasis (Hampson, 1900) and Suerkenola sublongiventris Shao & Han (2010) . Illustrations of the adults and the genitalia of all examined species are provided.

We describe the oldest Kalligrammatidae, two distantly related species of different subfamilies from the Lower Jurassic (lower Toarcian) of Germany: Liassopsychops curvatus Bode, 1953 , sit. nov. (Liassopsychopinae n. subfam.) and Ophtalmogramma klopschari n. gen. n. sp. (Kallihemerobiinae). They lived in warm and relatively dry conditions. Subfamily Liassopsychopinae includes the Jurassic genera Liassopsychops and Huiyingogramma, sit. nov., which bear forewings characterized by Sc and RA not fused distally; MP, CuA, CuP, and A1 dichotomously branched; and a well-developed central eye-spot. The forewing of Ophtalmogramma n. gen. is most similar to that of Apochrysogramma Yang et al., 2011 . The diversity of early Toarcian kalligrammatids indicates a late Triassic–earliest Jurassic origin of the family. A modified classification of the central eye-spots is proposed based on the presence/absence of four main components, i.e., the central pigmented disc (A), swellings (B), ocules (C), and outer rings (D). The function of the swellings is unclear, but they may have served as pheromone containers.

Human ATP-binding cassette (ABC) subfamily A (ABCA) transporters mediate the transport of various lipid compounds across the membrane. Mutations in human ABCA transporters have been described to cause severe hereditary disorders associated with impaired lipid transport. However, little is known about the mechanistic details of substrate recognition and translocation by ABCA transporters. Here, we present three cryo-EM structures of human ABCA4, a retina-specific ABCA transporter, in distinct functional states at resolutions of 3.3–3.4 Å. In the nucleotide-free state, the two transmembrane domains (TMDs) exhibit a lateral-opening conformation, allowing the lateral entry of substrate from the lipid bilayer. The N-retinylidene-phosphatidylethanolamine (NRPE), the physiological lipid substrate of ABCA4, is sandwiched between the two TMDs in the luminal leaflet and is further stabilized by an extended loop from extracellular domain 1. In the ATP-bound state, the two TMDs display a closed conformation, which precludes the substrate binding. Our study provides a molecular basis to understand the mechanism of ABCA4-mediated NRPE recognition and translocation, and suggests a common ‘lateral access and extrusion’ mechanism for ABCA-mediated lipid transport., Here, cryo-EM structures of human retinal ABCA4 transporter, either in apo state, in complex with ATP or with the physiological lipid substrate N-retinylidene-phosphatidylethanolamine (NRPE), reveal lateral opening, substrate recognition and suggest ‘lateral access and extrusion’ mechanism for ABCA-mediated lipid transport.

Abstract Lectotypes of Cneorhinus viridimetallicus Motschulsky, 1860, C. cuprescens Motschulsky, 1866, C. nodosus Motschulsky, 1860, and Dermatodes carinulatus Motschulsky, 1866 are designated. A new synonymy Catapionus viridimetallicus (Motschulsky, 1860) (= Cneorhinus cuprescens Motschulsky, 1866, syn. n.) and a new combination Scepticus carinulatus (Motschulsky, 1866), comb. n. are established. New data on the morphology of some genera of the tribes Cneorhinini and Tanymecini are presented. The record of Amystax fasciatus Roelofs, 1873 for Kunashir Island is shown to be based on misidentification of Scepticus carinulatus.

Walnut is a popular nut tree species and usually suffers from drought stress. However, little information is available on the mechanism of walnut responding to drought stress, resulting in lack of basic understanding for its resistance. In order to excavate more functional genes that can respond to stressors, and enrich the theoretical basis for walnut resistance, in this study, 5 MYB genes with complete ORFs were identified from J. regia and the basic bio-information as well as expression patterns in different tissues and response to drought and ABA stresses were confirmed using qRT-PCR assay. The results showed that 2 JrMYB genes belong to R1-MYB subfamily and 3 JrMYBs belong to R2R3-MYB, encoding the proteins from 212 to 362 aa in length. The phylogenetic analysis categorized proteins of 5 JrMYBs and 40 Arabidopsis AtMYBs into 10 subgroups. JrMYBs in the same subgroup exhibited significant similarities in the composition of conserved domains and motifs in amino acid sequences and exon/intron organization in DNA sequences. The results of qRT-PCR analysis revealed that JrMYB genes diversely expressed in various tissues. Moreover, the expression values of JrMYBs were upregulated or downregulated significantly under drought and ABA stresses. Most attractively, in contrast with suffering from drought stress alone, the treatments with drought and additional ABA greatly enhanced the transcript levels of JrMYBs. All these results suggested that JrMYB genes play a vital role in plant biological processes and drought as well as ABA stress response, and possibly perform as ABA-dependent drought response transcription factors in plant.

Human ATP-binding cassette transporter 8 of subfamily B (hABCB8) is an ABC transporter that located in the inner membrane of mitochondria. The ABCB8 is involved in the maturation of Fe-S and protects the heart from oxidative stress. Here, we present the cryo-EM structure of human ABCB8 binding with AMPPNP in inward-facing conformation with resolution of 4.1 Å. hABCB8 shows an open-inward conformation when ATP is bound. Unexpectedly, cholesterol molecules were identified in the transmembrane domain of hABCB8. Our results provide structural basis for the transport mechanism of the ABC transporter in mitochondria.

The reactions of α-D-phosphohexomutases (αPHM) are ubiquitous, key to primary metabolism and essential for several processes in all domains of life. The functionality of these enzymes relies on an initial auto-phosphorylation step which requires the presence of α-D-glucose-1,6-bisphosphate (Glc-1,6-BP). While well investigated in vertebrates, the origin of this activator compound in bacteria is unknown. Here we show that the Slr1334 protein from the unicellular cyanobacterium Synechocysitis sp. PCC 6803 is a Glc-1,6-BP-synthase. Biochemical analysis revealed that Slr1334 efficiently converts fructose-1,6-bisphosphate (Frc-1,6-BP) and α-D-glucose-1-phosphate/α-D-glucose-6-phosphate into Glc-1,6-BP and also catalyzes the reverse reaction. As inferred from phylogenetic analysis, the slr1334 product belongs to a primordial subfamily of αPHMs that is present especially in deeply branching bacteria and also includes human commensals and pathogens. Remarkably, the homologue of Slr1334 in the human gut bacterium Bacteroides salyersiae catalyzes the same reaction, suggesting a conserved and essential role for the members of this αPHM subfamily.

β-D-Galactofuranose (Galf) and its polysaccharides are found in bacteria, fungi and protozoa but do not occur in mammalian tissues, and thus represent a specific target for anti-pathogenic drugs. Understanding the enzymatic degradation of these polysaccharides is therefore of great interest, but the identity of fungal enzymes with exclusively galactofuranosidase activity has so far remained elusive. Here we describe the identification and characterization of a galactofuranosidase from the industrially important fungus Aspergillus niger. Phylogenetic analysis of glycoside hydrolase family 43 subfamily 34 (GH43_34) members revealed the occurrence of three distinct clusters and, by comparison with specificities of characterized bacterial members, suggested a basis for prediction of enzyme specificity. Using this rationale, in tandem with molecular docking, we identified a putative β-D-galactofuranosidase from A. niger which was recombinantly expressed in Escherichia coli. The Galf-specific hydrolase, encoded by xynD demonstrates maximum activity at pH 5, 25 °C towards 4-Nitrophenyl-β-galactofuranoside (pNP-β-Galf), with a Km of 17.9 ± 1.9 mM and Vmax of 70.6 ± 5.3 μmol min−1. The characterization of this first fungal GH43 galactofuranosidase offers further molecular insight into the degradation of Galf-containing structures and may inform clinical treatments against fungal pathogens.
