Though scholars and practitioners recognize the serious retrenchment and contraction taking place in government organizations, there have been no systematic attempts to assess managerial strategies empirically; however, recent conceptual approaches provide a starting point for research based assessments. This study is designed to examine patterns of governmental managerial strategies. The findings support existing strategy-based frameworks, but indicate that refinement in integrating the patterns of strategies with broader organization and management constructs is needed.
