113. Molecular characterization of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene of Oestridae species causing obligate myiasis.

Abstract

Abstract. A 688-bp region of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene was sequenced from larvae of 18 species of Oestridae causing obligate myiasis. Larvae belonged to the four Oestridae subfamilies (Cuterebrinae, Gasterophilinae, Hypodermatinae and Oestrinae), which are commonly found throughout the world. Analysis of both nucleotide and amino acid data was performed. Nucleotide sequences included 385 conserved sites and 303 variable sites; mean nucleotide variation between all species was 18.1% and variation within each subfamily ranged from 5.3% to 13.34%. Intraspecific pairwise divergences ranged from 0.14% to 1.59%, and interspecific variation ranged from 0.7% to 27%. Of the 229 amino acids, 76 were variable (60 of which were phylogenetically informative), with some highly conserved residues identified within each subfamily. Phylogenetic analysis showed a strong divergence among the four subfamilies, concordant with classical taxonomy based on morphological and biological features. This study provides the first molecular data set for myiasis-causing Oestridae species, providing an essential database for the molecular identification of these parasites and the assessment of phylogenetic relationships within family Oestridae. Abstract

Abstract. Cuticular structures and the sequence of the cytochrome oxidase I gene were compared for Hypoderma bovis (Linnaeus), Hypoderma lineatum (De Villers), Hypoderma actaeon Brauer, Hypoderma diana Brauer and Hypoderma tarandi (Linnaeus) (Diptera, Oestridae). Third-stage larvae of each species were examined by scanning electron microscopy revealing differences among species in the pattern and morphology of spines on the cephalic and thoracic segments, by spine patterns on the tenth abdominal segment, and by morphology of the spiracular plates. The morphological approach was supported by the molecular characterization of the most variable region of the cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene of these species, which was amplified by polymerase chain reaction and analysed. Amplicons were digested with the unique restriction enzyme, Bfa I, providing diagnostic profiles able to simultaneously differentiate all Hypoderma species examined. These findings confirm the utility of morphological characters for differentiating the most common Hypoderma larvae and reconfirm the power of the COI gene for studying insect identification and systematics. Abstract

AbstractPopulations of southern European Atlantic salmon Salmo salarare subjected to exploitation by sportfishing and exhibit evidence of dramatic catch reduction for the same fishing effort over recent history. We employed nine microsatellite loci as markers to estimate effective population sizes of Atlantic salmon in five rivers of northern Spain for comparison with 1990s data describing the same populations; marked declines in effective population sizes over the last decade were detected, and a reduced census size is proposed to be one of the probable causes. These estimates highlight the endangered status of the Atlantic salmon populations in northern Spain. A reduction in fishing effort and an increase in protective measures are recommended for the conservation of these fragile populations at the southernmost edge of the species’ natural distribution.

118. A Study of Some Factors Affecting the Photodegradation of Textile Yarns Part I : The Spectral Distributions of Sun-Sky and Xenon-Arc Radiation.

Abstract

A detailed study was made of the relative spectral distribution of sun-sky radiation at several times of day under various sky conditions from June to October 1971. A sufficient number of spectra were recorded to provide a statistically viable sample. Average spectral distributions for three daily time periods and four classes of sky conditions within four approximately monthly periods were calculated and compared. Radiation from a sunny-bright sky over the noon period gave a representative average and would be a reasonable standard sun-sky spectral distribution for comparison with artificial light sources.The relative spectral distribution of xenon-arc radiation in combination with various filters was monitored using the same spectrographic equipment. Comparison of the sun-sky spectral distribution with the xenon arc emission spectrum indicated that although agreement of the lower cut-off wavelength could be attained using Q/Q/WG filters. Xenon radiation was deficient above 3150 Å regardless of the filter system used. Infrared filters removed an undesirable amount of high energy radiation and would be likely to decelerate degradation. Abstract

The spectral distributions of xenon-arc radiation using several filter systems were compared to August sun-sky radiation measured behind window glass. By locating the main bond-dissociation energies of polyester and nylon at their equivalent photon energies on the spectral distribution curves it was possible to explain the discrepancies in degradation rates, reported in Part I of this work, which occurred between the xenon-arc and outdoor exposures. These differences in spectra may also account for degradation sensitization by anatase during the outdoor exposures. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

We report measurements of ϒ meson production in p+p, d+Au, and Au+Au collisions using the STAR detector at RHIC. We compare the ϒ yield to the measured cross section in p+p collisions in order to quantify any modifications of the yield in cold nuclear matter using d+Au data and in hot nuclear matter using Au+Au data separated into three centrality classes. Abstract

We present measurements of the charge balance function, from the charged particles, for diverse pseudorapidity and transverse momentum ranges in Au+Au collisions at sNN=200 GeV using the STAR detector at RHIC. We observe that the balance function is boost-invariant within the pseudorapidity coverage [−1.3,1.3]. The balance function properly scaled by the width of the observed pseudorapidity window does not depend on the position or size of the pseudorapidity window. This scaling property also holds for particles in different transverse momentum ranges. In addition, we find that the width of the balance function decreases monotonically with increasing transverse momentum for all centrality classes.

Abstract

We present first measurements of the evolution of the differential transverse momentum correlation function, C, with collision centrality in Au+Au interactions at sNN=200 GeV. This observable exhibits a strong dependence on collision centrality that is qualitatively similar to that of number correlations previously reported. We use the observed longitudinal broadening of the near-side peak of C with increasing centrality to estimate the ratio of the shear viscosity to entropy density, η/s, of the matter formed in central Au+Au interactions. We obtain an upper limit estimate of η/s that suggests that the produced medium has a small viscosity per unit entropy.

Abstract

We report a high precision measurement of the transverse single spin asymmetry AN at the center of mass energy s=200 GeV in elastic proton–proton scattering by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The AN was measured in the four-momentum transfer squared t range 0.003⩽|t|⩽0.035 (GeV/c)2, the region of a significant interference between the electromagnetic and hadronic scattering amplitudes. The measured values of AN and its t-dependence are consistent with a vanishing hadronic spin-flip amplitude, thus providing strong constraints on the ratio of the single spin-flip to the non-flip amplitudes. Since the hadronic amplitude is dominated by the Pomeron amplitude at this s, we conclude that this measurement addresses the question about the presence of a hadronic spin flip due to the Pomeron exchange in polarized proton–proton elastic scattering.

Artificial reefs were constructed offshore at Freeport and Galveston, Texas. The Galveston reef was successful in respect to fish usage but not in respect to fisherman usage. The conclusion reached was that the project realized too low a return on the investment.

Abstract

Wild fish populations are currently experiencing unprecedented pressures, which are projected to intensify in the coming decades. Developing a thorough understanding of the influences of both biotic and abiotic factors on fish populations is a salient issue in contemporary fish conservation and management. During the 50th Anniversary of the Fisheries Society of the British Isles, University of Exeter, 2017, scientists from diverse research backgrounds gathered to discuss key topics under the broad umbrella of ‘Understanding Fish Populations’. Below, the output of one such discussion group is detailed, focusing on tools used to investigate natural fish populations. Five main groups of approaches were identified: (i) Tagging and telemetry; (ii) Molecular tools; (iii) Survey tools; (iv) Statistical and modelling tools; and (v) Tissue analyses. The appraisal covered current challenges and potential solutions for each of these topics. In addition, three key themes were identified as applicable across all tool-based applications. These included data management, public engagement, and fisheries policy and governance. The continued innovation of tools and capacity to integrate interdisciplinary approaches into the future assessment and management of fish populations is highlighted as an important focus for the next 50 years of fisheries research.
