The Gl 486 system consists of a very nearby, relatively bright, weakly active M3.5 V star at just 8 pc with a warm transiting rocky planet of about 1.3 R_Terra and 3.0 M_Terra that is ideal for both transmission and emission spectroscopy and for testing interior models of telluric planets. To prepare for future studies, we collected light curves of seven new transits observed with the CHEOPS space mission and new radial velocities obtained with MAROON-X/Gemini North and CARMENES/Calar Alto telescopes, together with previously published spectroscopic and photometric data from the two spectrographs and TESS. We also performed interferometric observations with the CHARA Array and new photometric monitoring with a suite of smaller telescopes. From interferometry, we measure a limb-darkened disc angular size of the star Gl 486. Together with a corrected Gaia EDR3 parallax, we obtain a stellar radius. We also measure a stellar rotation period at P_rot ~ 49.9 d, an upper limit to its XUV (5-920 AA) flux with new Hubble/STIS data, and, for the first time, a variety of element abundances (Fe, Mg, Si, V, Sr, Zr, Rb) and C/O ratio. Besides, we impose restrictive constraints on the presence of additional components, either stellar or substellar, in the system. With the input stellar parameters and the radial-velocity and transit data, we determine the radius and mass of the planet Gl 486 b at R_p = 1.343+/0.063 R_Terra and M_p = 3.00+/-0.13 M_Terra. From the planet parameters and the stellar element abundances, we infer the most probable models of planet internal structure and composition, which are consistent with a relatively small metallic core with respect to the Earth, a deep silicate mantle, and a thin volatile upper layer. Understanding magnetic activity on the surface of stars other than the Sun is important for exoplanet analyses to properly characterize an exoplanet's atmosphere and to further characterize stellar activity on a wide range of stars. Modeling stellar surface features of a variety of spectral types and rotation rates are key to understanding of the magnetic activity of these stars. Using data from Kepler, we use the starspot modeling program STarSPot (STSP) to measure the position and size of spots for KOI-340 which is an eclipsing binary consisting of a subgiant star ($\rm T_{\rm eff} = 5593 \pm 27 K; R_{*} = 1.98 \pm 0.05 R_{\odot}$) with an M-dwarf companion ($M_{*} = 0.214 \pm 0.006 M_{\odot}$). STSP uses a novel technique to measure the spot positions and radii by using the transiting secondary to study and model individual active regions on the stellar surface using high-precision photometry. We find the average size of spot features on KOI-340's primary is $\sim$10% the radius of the star, i.e. two times larger than the mean size of Solar-maximum sunspots. The spots on KOI-340 are present at every longitude and show possible signs of differential rotation. The minimum fractional spotted area of KOI-340's primary is $2\substack{+12\\ -2} \%$ while the spotted area of the Sun is at most 0.2%. One transit of KOI-340 shows a signal in the transit consistent with a plage; this plage occurs right before a dark spot indicating the plage and spot might be co-located on the surface of the star., Comment: 16 pages, 17 figures; Accepted to AJ

We define decorated $\alpha$-stable trees which are informally obtained from an $\alpha$-stable tree by blowing up its branchpoints into random metric spaces. This generalizes the $\alpha$-stable looptrees of Curien and Kortchemski, where those metric spaces are just deterministic circles. We provide different constructions for these objects, which allows us to understand some of their geometric properties, including compactness, Hausdorff dimension and self-similarity in distribution. We prove an invariance principle which states that under some conditions, analogous discrete objects, random decorated discrete trees, converge in the scaling limit to decorated $\alpha$-stable trees. We mention a few examples where those objects appear in the context of random trees and planar maps, and we expect them to naturally arise in many more cases., Comment: 52 pages, 6 figures. We present the validation of two planets orbiting M dwarfs, TOI-1696b and TOI-2136b. Both planets are mini-Neptunes orbiting nearby stars, making them promising prospects for atmospheric characterization with the James Webb Space Telescope. We validated the planetary nature of both candidates using high contrast imaging, ground-based photometry, and near-infrared radial velocities. Adaptive Optics images were taken using the ShARCS camera on the 3 m Shane Telescope. Speckle images were taken using the NN-Explore Exoplanet Stellar Speckle Imager on the WIYN 3.5 m telescope. Radii and orbital ephemerides were refined using a combination of TESS, the diffuser-assisted ARCTIC imager on the 3.5m ARC telescope at Apache Point Observatory, and the 0.6 m telescope at Red Buttes Observatory. We obtained radial velocities using the Habitable-Zone Planet Finder on the 10 m Hobby-Eberly Telescope, which enabled us to place upper limits on the masses of both transiting planets. TOI-1696b (P = 2.5 days; R$_{p}$ = 3.24 R$_{\oplus}$; M$_{p}$ $<$ 56.6 M$_{\oplus}$) falls into a sparsely-populated region of parameter space considering its host star's temperature (T$_{\rm{eff}}$ = 3168 K, M4.5), as planets of its size are quite rare around mid to late M dwarfs. On the other hand, TOI-2136b (P = 7.85 days; R$_{p}$ = 2.09 R$_{\oplus}$; M$_{p}$ $<$ 15.0 M$_{\oplus}$) is an excellent candidate for atmospheric follow-up with JWST., Comment: Accepted for Publication in the Astronomical Journal

We present the validation of a transiting low-density exoplanet orbiting the M2.5 dwarf TOI 620 discovered by the NASA TESS mission. We utilize photometric data from both TESS and ground-based follow-up observations to validate the ephemerides of the 5.09-day transiting signal and vet false positive scenarios. High-contrast imaging data are used to resolve the stellar host and exclude stellar companions at separations $\gtrsim 0.2''$. We obtain follow-up spectroscopy and corresponding precise radial velocities (RVs) with multiple PRV spectrographs to confirm the planetary nature of the transiting exoplanet. We calculate a 5$\sigma$ upper limit of $M_P < 7.1$ M$_\oplus$ and $\rho_P < 0.74$ g cm$^{-3}$, and we identify a non-transiting 17.7-day candidate. We also find evidence for a substellar (1-20 M$_{\rm J}$) companion with a projected separation $\lesssim 20$ au from a combined analysis of Gaia, AO imaging, and RVs. With the discovery of this outer companion, we carry out a detailed exploration of the possibilities that TOI 620 b might instead be a circum-secondary planet or a pair of eclipsing binary stars orbiting the host in a hierarchical triple system. We find, under scrutiny, that we can exclude both of these scenarios from the multi-wavelength transit photometry, thus validating TOI 620 b as a low-density exoplanet transiting the central star in this system. The low density of TOI 620 b makes it one of the most amenable exoplanets for atmospheric characterization, such as with JWST and Ariel, validated or confirmed by the TESS mission to date., Comment: 64 pages, 34 figures, 22 tables. We present the discovery of a new Jovian-sized planet, TOI-3757 b, the lowest density planet orbiting an M dwarf (M0V). It orbits a solar-metallicity M dwarf discovered using TESS photometry and confirmed with precise radial velocities (RV) from HPF and NEID. With a planetary radius of $12.0^{+0.4}_{-0.5}$ $R_{\oplus}$ and mass of $85.3^{+8.8}_{-8.7}$ $M_{\oplus}$, not only does this object add to the small sample of gas giants ($\sim 10$) around M dwarfs, but also, its low density ($\rho =$ $0.27^{+0.05}_{-0.04}$ $\textrm{g~cm}^{-3}$) provides an opportunity to test theories of planet formation. We present two hypotheses to explain its low density; first, we posit that the low metallicity of its stellar host ($\sim$ 0.3 dex lower than the median metallicity of M dwarfs hosting gas giants) could have played a role in the delayed formation of a solid core massive enough to initiate runaway accretion. Second, using the eccentricity estimate of $0.14 \pm 0.06$ we determine it is also plausible for tidal heating to at least partially be responsible for inflating the radius of TOI-3757b b. The low density and large scale height of TOI-3757 b makes it an excellent target for transmission spectroscopy studies of atmospheric escape and composition (TSM $\sim$ 190). We use HPF to perform transmission spectroscopy of TOI-3757 b using the helium 10830 \AA~ line. Doing this, we place an upper limit of 6.9 \% (with 90\% confidence) on the maximum depth of the absorption from the metastable transition of He at $\sim$ 10830 \AA, which can help constraint the atmospheric mass loss rate in this energy limited regime., Comment: AJ. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2107.13670

Close-in gas giants present a surprising range of stellar obliquity, the angle between a planet's orbital axis and its host star's spin axis. It is unclear whether the obliquities reflect the planets' dynamical history (e.g., aligned for in situ formation or disk migration versus misaligned for high-eccentricity tidal migration) or whether other mechanisms (e.g., primordial misalignment or planet-star interactions) are more important in sculpting the obliquity distribution. Here we present the stellar obliquity measurement of TOI-1268 (TIC-142394656, $V_{\rm mag} {\sim} 10.9$), a young K-type dwarf hosting an 8.2-day period, Saturn-sized planet. TOI-1268's lithium abundance and rotation period suggest the system age between the ages of Pleiades cluster (${\sim}120$ Myr) and Praesepe cluster (${\sim}670$ Myr). Using the newly commissioned NEID spectrograph, we constrain the stellar obliquity of TOI-1268 via the Rossiter-McLaughlin (RM) effect from both radial velocity (RV) and Doppler Tomography (DT) signals. The 3$\sigma$ upper bounds of the projected stellar obliquity $|\lambda|$ from both models are below 60$^\circ$. The large host star separation ($a/R_\star {\sim} 17$), combined with the system's young age, makes it unlikely that the planet has realigned its host star. Accurate tracers of the stellar magnetic field and rotation are cornerstones for the study of M dwarfs and for reliable detection and characterization of their exoplanetary companions. Such measurements are particularly challenging for old, slowly rotating, fully convective M dwarfs. To explore the use of new activity and rotation tracers, we examined multi-year near-infrared spectroscopic monitoring of two such stars -- GJ 699 (Barnard's Star) and Teegarden's Star -- carried out with Habitable Zone Planet Finder spectrograph. We detected periodic variations in absorption line widths across the stellar spectrum with higher amplitudes towards longer wavelengths. We also detected similar variations in the strength and width of the 12435.67 Angstrom neutral potassium (K I) line, a known tracer of the photospheric magnetic field. Attributing these variations to rotational modulation, we confirm the known $145\pm15$ d rotation period of GJ 699, and measure the rotation period of Teegarden's Star to be $99.6\pm1.4$ d. Based on simulations of the K I line and the wavelength-dependence of the line width signal, we argue that the observed signals are consistent with varying photospheric magnetic fields and the associated Zeeman effect. These results highlight the value of detailed line profile measurements in the near-infrared for diagnosing stellar magnetic field variability. We confirm the planetary nature of two gas giants discovered by TESS to transit M dwarfs. TOI-3714 ($V=15.24,~J=11.74$) is an M2 dwarf hosting a hot Jupiter ($M_p=0.70 \pm 0.03~\mathrm{M_J}$ and $R_p=1.01 \pm 0.03~\mathrm{R_J}$) on an orbital period of $2.154849 \pm 0.000001$ days with a resolved white dwarf companion. TOI-3629 ($V=14.63,~J=11.42$) is an M1 dwarf hosting a hot Jupiter ($M_p=0.26 \pm 0.02~\mathrm{M_J}$ and $R_p=0.74 \pm 0.02~\mathrm{R_J}$) on an orbital period of $3.936551_{-0.000006}^{+0.000005}$ days. We characterize each transiting companion using a combination of ground-based and space-based photometry, speckle imaging, and high-precision velocimetry from the Habitable-zone Planet Finder and the NEID spectrographs. With the discovery of these two systems, there are now nine M dwarfs known to host transiting hot Jupiters. Among this population, TOI-3714 b ($T_{eq}=750\pm20$ K and $\mathrm{TSM}=98\pm7$) and TOI-3629 b ($T_{eq}=690\pm20$ K and $\mathrm{TSM}=80\pm9$) are warm gas giants amenable to additional characterization with transmission spectroscopy to probe atmospheric chemistry and, for TOI-3714, obliquity measurements to probe formation scenarios., Comment: 39 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables. Kepler 1627A is a G8V star previously known to host a 3.8 Earth-radius planet on a 7.2 day orbit. The star was observed by the Kepler space telescope because it is nearby (d=329 pc) and it resembles the Sun. Here we show using Gaia kinematics, TESS stellar rotation periods, and spectroscopic lithium abundances that Kepler 1627 is a member of the 38 $\pm$ 6 Myr old $\delta$ Lyr cluster. To our knowledge, this makes Kepler 1627Ab the youngest planet with a precise age yet found by the prime Kepler mission. The Kepler photometry shows two peculiarities: the average transit profile is asymmetric, and the individual transit times might be correlated with the local light curve slope. We discuss possible explanations for each anomaly. More importantly, the $\delta$ Lyr cluster is one of about 10$^3$ coeval groups whose properties have been clarified by Gaia. Efforts with extreme-precision radial velocity (EPRV) instruments to detect small-amplitude planets are largely limited, on many timescales, by the effects of stellar variability and instrumental systematics. One avenue for investigating these effects is the use of small solar telescopes which direct disk-integrated sunlight to these EPRV instruments, observing the Sun at high cadence over months or years. We have designed and built a solar feed system to carry out "Sun-as-a-star" observations with NEID, a very high precision Doppler spectrometer recently commissioned at the WIYN 3.5m Telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory. The NEID solar feed has been taking observations nearly every day since December 2020; data is publicly available at the NASA Exoplanet Science Institute (NExScI) NEID Solar Archive: \url{https://neid.ipac.caltech.edu/search_solar.php}. In this paper, we present the design of the NEID solar feed and explanations behind our design intent. We report the discovery of a $M=67\pm2~\mathrm{M_J}$ brown dwarf transiting the early M dwarf TOI-2119 on an eccentric orbit ($e=0.3362 \pm 0.0005$) at an orbital period of $7.200861 \pm 0.000005$ days. We confirm the brown dwarf nature of the transiting companion using a combination of ground-based and space-based photometry and high-precision velocimetry from the Habitable-zone Planet Finder. Detection of the secondary eclipse with TESS photometry enables a precise determination of the eccentricity and reveals the brown dwarf has a brightness temperature of $2100\pm80$ K, a value which is consistent with an early L dwarf. TOI-2119 is one of the most eccentric known brown dwarfs with $P<10$ days, possibly due to the long circularization timescales for an object orbiting an M dwarf. We validate the planetary nature of an ultra-short period planet orbiting the M dwarf KOI-4777. We use a combination of space-based photometry from Kepler, high-precision, near-infrared Doppler spectroscopy from the Habitable-zone Planet Finder, and adaptive optics imaging to characterize this system. KOI-4777.01 is a Mars-sized exoplanet ($\mathrm{R}_{p}=0.51 \pm 0.03R_{\oplus}$) orbiting the host star every 0.412-days ($\sim9.9$-hours). This is the smallest validated ultra-short period planet known and we see no evidence for additional massive companions using our HPF RVs. We constrain the upper $3\sigma$ mass to $M_{p}<0.34~\mathrm{M_\oplus}$ by assuming the planet is less dense than iron. The Gaia Alert System issued an alert on 2020 August 28, on Gaia 20eae when its light curve showed a $\sim$4.25 magnitude outburst. We present multi-wavelength photometric and spectroscopic follow-up observations of this source since 2020 August and identify it as the newest member of the FUor/EXor family of sources. We find that the present brightening of Gaia 20eae is not due to the dust clearing event but due to an intrinsic change in the spectral energy distribution. The light curve of Gaia 20eae shows a transition stage during which most of its brightness ($\sim$3.4 mag) has occurred at a short timescale of 34 days with a rise-rate of 3 mag/month. Gaia 20eae has now started to decay at a rate of 0.3 mag/month. We have detected a strong P Cygni profile in H$\alpha$ which indicates the presence of winds originating from regions close to the accretion. We find signatures of very strong and turbulent outflow and accretion in Gaia 20eae during this outburst phase. We have also detected a red-shifted absorption component in all the Ca II IR triplet lines consistent with signature of hot in-falling gas in the magnetospheric accretion funnel. This enables us to constrain the viewing angle with respect to the accretion funnel. We present high-resolution observations of a flaring event in the M8 dwarf vB 10 using the near-infrared Habitable zone Planet Finder (HPF) spectrograph on the Hobby Eberly Telescope (HET). The high stability of HPF enables us to accurately subtract a VB 10 quiescent spectrum from the flare spectrum to isolate the flare contributions, and study the changes in the relative energy of the Ca II infrared triplet (IRT), several Paschen lines, the He 10830 \AA~ triplet lines, and select iron and magnesium lines in HPF`s bandpass. Our analysis reveals the presence of a red asymmetry in the He 10830 \AA~ triplet; which is similar to signatures of coronal rain in the Sun. Photometry of the flare derived from an acquisition camera before spectroscopic observations, and the ability to extract spectra from up-the-ramp observations with the HPF infrared detector, enables us to perform time-series analysis of part of the flare, and provide coarse constraints on the energy and frequency of such flares. We compare this flare with historical observations of flares around vB 10 and other ultracool M dwarfs, and attempt to place limits on flare-induced atmospheric mass loss for hypothetical planets around vB 10., Comment: Accepted in ApJ. 22 pages, 13 figures, 3 tables

The warm Neptune GJ 3470b transits a nearby ($d=29$pc) bright slowly rotating M1.5-dwarf star. Using spectroscopic observations during two transits with the newly commissioned NEID spectrometer on the WIYN 3.5m Telescope at Kitt Peak Observatory, we model the classical Rossiter-Mclaughlin effect yielding a sky-projected obliquity of $\lambda=98_{-12}^{+15\:\circ}$ and a $v \sin i = 0.85_{-0.33}^{+0.27}$km/s. Leveraging information about the rotation period and size of the host star, our analysis yields a true obliquity of $\psi=95_{-8}^{+9\:\circ}$, revealing that GJ 3470b is on a polar orbit. Using radial velocities from HIRES, HARPS and the Habitable-zone Planet Finder, we show that the data are compatible with a long-term RV slope of $\dot{\gamma} = -0.0022 \pm 0.0011$m/s/day over a baseline of 12.9 years. If the RV slope is due to acceleration from another companion in the system, we show that such a companion is capable of explaining the polar and mildly eccentric orbit of GJ 3470b using two different secular excitation models. The existence of an outer companion can be further constrained with additional RV observations, Gaia astrometry, and future high-contrast imaging observations. Lastly, we show that tidal heating from GJ 3470b's mild eccentricity has most likely inflated the radius of GJ 3470b by a factor of $\sim$1.5-1.7, which could help account for its evaporating atmosphere., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures. We present spectroscopic measurements of the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect for WASP-148b, the only known hot Jupiter with a nearby warm-Jupiter companion, from the WIYN/NEID and Keck/HIRES instruments. This is one of the first scientific results reported from the newly commissioned NEID spectrograph, as well as the second obliquity constraint for a hot Jupiter system with a close-in companion, after WASP-47. WASP-148b is consistent with being in alignment with the sky-projected spin axis of the host star, with $\lambda=-8^{\circ}.2^{{+8^{\circ}.7}}_{-9^{\circ}.7}$. The low obliquity observed in the WASP-148 system is consistent with the orderly-alignment configuration of most compact multi-planet systems around cool stars with obliquity constraints, including our solar system, and may point to an early history for these well-organized systems in which migration and accretion occurred in isolation, with relatively little disturbance. By contrast, previous results have indicated that high-mass and hot stars appear to more commonly host a wide range of misaligned planets: not only single hot Jupiters, but also compact systems with multiple super-Earths. We suggest that, to account for the high rate of spin-orbit misalignments in both compact multi-planet and isolated-hot-Jupiter systems orbiting high-mass and hot stars, spin-orbit misalignments may be caused by distant giant planet perturbers, which are most common around these stellar types., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

TOI-1266c is a recently discovered super-Venus in the radius valley orbiting an early M dwarf. However, its notional bulk density ($\sim$2.2 g cm$^{-3}$) is consistent with a large volatile fraction, suggesting that it might have volatile reservoirs that have survived billions of years at more than twice the Earth's insolation. On the other hand, the upper mass limit paints a picture of a cool super Mercury dominated by >50\% iron core ($\sim$9.2 g cm$^{-3}$) that has tiptoed up to the collisional stripping limit and into the radius gap. Here, we examine several hypothetical states for TOI-1266c using a combination of new and updated open-source atmospheric escape, radiative-convective, and photochemical models. We find that water-rich atmospheres with trace amounts of H$_{2}$ and CO$_{2}$ are potentially detectable (SNR $>\sim 5$) in less than 20 hours of JWST observing time. We also find that water vapor spectral features are not substantially impacted by the presence of high-altitude water or ice clouds due the presence of a significant amount of water above the cloud-deck, although further work with self-consistent cloud models is needed. In this paper, we introduce complexity-aware planning for finite-horizon deterministic finite automata with rewards as outputs, based on Kolmogorov complexity. Kolmogorov complexity is considered since it can detect computational regularities of deterministic optimal policies. We present a planning objective yielding an explicit trade-off between a policy's performance and complexity. It is proven that maximising this objective is non-trivial in the sense that dynamic programming is infeasible. We present two algorithms obtaining low-complexity policies, where the first algorithm obtains a low-complexity optimal policy, and the second algorithm finds a policy maximising performance while maintaining local (stage-wise) complexity constraints. We evaluate the algorithms on a simple navigation task for a mobile robot, where our algorithms yield low-complexity policies that concur with intuition., Comment: Accepted to CDC 2021

The tutor-web drilling system is designed for learning so there are typically no limits on the number of attempts at improving performance. This system is used at multiple schools and universities in Iceland and Kenya, mostly for mathematics and statistics. Students earn SmileyCoin, a cryptocurrency, while studying. In Iceland the system has typically been used by students who use their own devices to solve homework assignments during the semester, accessing the Internet-based tutor-web at http://tutor-web.net. These students typically take final exams on paper at the end of the semester. In Kenya the system is a part of a plan to enhance mathematics education using educational technology, organised by the Smiley Charity with the African Maths Initiative. This has been done by donating servers running the tutor-web to schools and tablets to students. Typically these schools do not have Internet access so the cryptocurrency can not be used. Innovative redesign was needed during COVID-19 in spring, 2020, since universities in Iceland were not able to host in-house finals and schools in Kenya were closed so tablets could not be donated directly to students. Remote finals were held in Iceland but the implementation was largely in the hands of the instructors. In Kenya, community libraries remained open and became a place for students to come in to study. Innovations included using the tutor-web as a remote drilling system in place of final exams in a large undergraduate course in statistics and donating tablets to libraries in Kenya. These libraries all have access to the Internet and the students have therefore been given the option to purchase the tablet using their SmileyCoin. This paper describes these implementations and how this unintended experiment will likely affect the future development and use of the tutor-web in both countries.

Whenever students use any drilling system the question arises how much of their learning is meaningful learning vs memorisation through repetition or rote learning. Although both types of learning have their place in an educational system it is important to be able to distinguish between these two approaches to learning and identify options which can dislodge students from rote learning and motivate them towards meaningful learning. The tutor-web is an online drilling system. The design aim of the system is learning rather than evaluation. This is done by presenting students with multiple-choice questions which are selected randomly but linked to the students' performance. The questions themselves can be generated for a specific topic by drawing correct and incorrect answers from a collection associated with a general problem statement or heading. With this generating process students may see the same question heading twice but be presented with all new answer options or a mixture of new and old answer options. Data from a course on probability theory and statistics, taught during COVID-19, are analysed to separate rote learning from meaningful learning. The analyses show non-rote learning, but even with large question databases, students' performance is better when they are presented with an answer option they have seen before. An element of rote learning is thus exhibited but a deeper learning is also demonstrated. The item database has been seeded with hints such that some questions contain clues to cue the students towards the correct answer. This ties in with the issue of meaningful learning versus rote learning since the hope is that a new hint will work as a cue to coax the student to think harder about the question rather than continue to employ rote learning. Preliminary results indicate that hints are particularly useful for students with poor performance metrics.

Multiple choice questions (MCQs) are commonly used for assessment in higher education. With increased use of on-line examination it is likely that the usage of MCQs will be even more in years to come. It is therefore of interest to examine some characteristics of these type of questions such as the effect of the number of distractors used and the "None of the above" (NOTA) or "All of the above" (AOTA) options. The tutor-web is an open-source, on-line drilling system that is freely available to anyone having access to the Internet. The system was designed to be used for teaching mathematics and statistics but can in principle be used for other subjects as well. The system offers thousands of multiple choice questions at high school and university level. In addition to be a tool used by students for learning it has also been used as a testbed for research on web-assisted education. The tutor-web system was used both as a learning tool and as a testing tool in a university course on mathematical statistics in the spring of 2020. Around 300 students were enrolled in the course providing tens of thousands of answers to MCQs designed to investigate the effect of the number of distractors and the use of NOTA and AOTA options in questions. The main findings of the study were that the probability of answering a question correctly was highest when a AOTA option was used as a distractor and when NOTA and AOTA were not used in questions. The probability of answering a question correctly decreased with the number of distractors.

Early in their lives, planets endure extreme amounts of ionizing radiation from their host stars. For planets with primordial hydrogen and helium-rich envelopes, this can lead to substantial mass loss. Direct observations of atmospheric escape in young planetary systems can help elucidate this critical stage of planetary evolution. In this work, we search for metastable helium absorption---a tracer of tenuous gas in escaping atmospheres---during transits of three planets orbiting the young solar analogue V1298 Tau. We characterize the stellar helium line using HET/HPF, and find that it evolves substantially on timescales of days to months. The line is stable on hour-long timescales except for one set of spectra taken during the decay phase of a stellar flare, where absoprtion increased with time. Utilizing a beam-shaping diffuser and a narrowband filter centered on the helium feature, we observe four transits with Palomar/WIRC: two partial transits of planet d ($P = 12.4$ days), one partial transit of planet b ($P = 24.1$ days), and one full transit of planet c ($P = 8.2$ days). We do not detect the transit of planet c, and we find no evidence of excess absorption for planet b, with $\Delta R_\mathrm{b}/R_\star<0.019$ in our bandpass. We find a tentative absorption signal for planet d with $\Delta R_\mathrm{d}/R_\star = 0.0205\pm0.054$, but the best-fit model requires a substantial (-100$\pm$14 min) transit-timing offset on a two-month timescale. LTT 1445 is a hierarchical triple M-dwarf star system located at a distance of 6.86 parsecs. The primary star LTT 1445A (0.257 M_Sun) is known to host the transiting planet LTT 1445Ab with an orbital period of 5.4 days, making it the second closest known transiting exoplanet system, and the closest one for which the host is an M dwarf. Using TESS data, we present the discovery of a second planet in the LTT 1445 system, with an orbital period of 3.1 days. We combine radial velocity measurements obtained from the five spectrographs ESPRESSO, HARPS, HIRES, MAROON-X, and PFS to establish that the new world also orbits LTT 1445A. We determine the mass and radius of LTT 1445Ab to be 2.87+/-0.25 M_Earth and 1.304^{+0.067}_{-0.060} R_Earth, consistent with an Earth-like composition. For the newly discovered LTT 1445Ac, we measure a mass of 1.54^{+0.20}_{-0.19} M_Earth and a minimum radius of 1.15 R_Earth, but we cannot determine the radius directly as the signal-to-noise of our light curve permits both grazing and non-grazing configurations. Using MEarth photometry and ground-based spectroscopy, we establish that star C (0.161 M_Sun) is likely the source of the 1.4-day rotation period, and star B (0.215 M_Sun) has a likely rotation period of 6.7 days. We estimate a probable rotation period of 85 days for LTT 1445A. Thus, this triple M-dwarf system appears to be in a special evolutionary stage where the most massive M dwarf has spun down, the intermediate mass M dwarf is in the process of spinning down, while the least massive stellar component has not yet begun to spin down., Comment: Accepted to the Astronomical Journal. 4 tables, 10 figures; RV table available upon request

We confirm the planetary nature of TOI-532b, using a combination of precise near-infrared radial velocities with the Habitable-zone Planet Finder, TESS light curves, ground based photometric follow-up, and high-contrast imaging. TOI-532 is a faint (J$\sim 11.5$) metal-rich M dwarf with Teff = $3957\pm69$ K and [Fe/H] = $0.38\pm0.04$; it hosts a transiting gaseous planet with a period of $\sim 2.3$ days. Joint fitting of the radial velocities with the TESS and ground-based transits reveal a planet with radius of $5.82\pm0.19$ R$_{\oplus}$, and a mass of $61.5_{-9.3}^{+9.7}$ M$_{\oplus}$. TOI-532b is the largest and most massive super Neptune detected around an M dwarf with both mass and radius measurements, and it bridges the gap between the Neptune-sized planets and the heavier Jovian planets known to orbit M dwarfs. It also follows the previously noted trend between gas giants and host star metallicity for M dwarf planets. We obtained high-resolution spectra of the ultra-cool M-dwarf TRAPPIST-1 during the transit of its planet `b' using two high dispersion near-infrared spectrographs, IRD instrument on the Subaru 8.2m telescope and HPF instrument on the 10m Hobby-Eberly Telescope. These spectroscopic observations are complemented by a photometric transit observation for planet `b' using the APO/ARCTIC, which assisted us to capture the correct transit times for our transit spectroscopy. Using the data obtained by the new IRD and HPF observations, as well as the prior transit observations of planets `b', `e' and `f' from IRD, we attempt to constrain the atmospheric escape of the planet using the He I triplet 10830 {\AA} absorption line. We do not detect evidence for any primordial extended H-He atmospheres in all three planets. To limit any planet related absorption, we place an upper limit on the equivalent widths of <7.754 m{\AA} for planet `b', <10.458 m{\AA} for planet `e', and <4.143 m{\AA} for planet `f' at 95% confidence from the IRD data, and <3.467 m{\AA} for planet `b' at 95% confidence from HPF data. Using these limits along with a solar-like composition isothermal Parker wind model, we attempt to constrain the mass-loss rates for the three planets. For TRAPPIST-1b, our models exclude the highest possible energy-limited rate for a wind temperature <5000 K. This non-detection of extended atmospheres having low mean-molecular weight in all three planets aids in further constraining their atmospheric composition by steering the focus towards the search of high molecular weight species in their atmospheres., Comment: 11 pages; 4 figures; Accepted for publication in AJ

MAROON-X is a fiber-fed, red-optical, high precision radial velocity spectrograph recently commissioned at the Gemini North telescope on Mauna Kea, Hawai'i. With a resolving power of 85,000 and a wavelength coverage of 500-920 nm, it delivers radial velocity measurements for late K and M dwarfs with sub-50 cm s$^{-1}$ precision. MAROON-X is currently the only optical EPRV spectrograph on a 8m-class telescope in the northern hemisphere and the only EPRV instrument on a large telescope with full access by the entire US community. Barnard's star is among the most studied stars given its proximity to the Sun. It is often considered $the$ Radial Velocity (RV) standard for fully convective stars due to its RV stability and equatorial declination. Recently, an $M \sin i = 3.3 M_{\oplus}$ super-Earth planet candidate with a 233 day orbital period was announced by Ribas et al. (2018). New observations from the near-infrared Habitable-zone Planet Finder (HPF) Doppler spectrometer do not show this planetary signal. We ran a suite of experiments on both the original data and a combined original + HPF data set. These experiments include model comparisons, periodogram analyses, and sampling sensitivity, all of which show the signal at the proposed period of 233 days is transitory in nature. The power in the signal is largely contained within 211 RVs that were taken within a 1000 day span of observing. Our preferred model of the system is one which features stellar activity without a planet. We propose that the candidate planetary signal is an alias of the 145 day rotation period. This result highlights the challenge of analyzing long-term, quasi-periodic activity signals over multi-year and multi-instrument observing campaigns., Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures. We consider maps which are constructed from plane trees by assigning marks to the corners of each vertex and then connecting each pair of consecutive marks on their contour by a single edge. A measure is defined on the set of such maps by assigning Boltzmann weights to the faces. When every vertex has exactly one marked corner, these maps are dissections of a polygon which are bijectively related to non-crossing trees. When every vertex has at least one marked corner, the maps are outerplanar and each of its two-connected component is bijectively related to a non-crossing tree. We study the scaling limits of the maps under these conditions and establish that for certain choices of the weights the scaling limits are either the Brownian CRT or the $\alpha$-stable looptrees of Curien and Kortchemski., Comment: 30 pages

The comb-like spectrum of a white light-illuminated Fabry-P\'{e}rot etalon can serve as a cost-effective and stable reference for precise Doppler measurements. Understanding the stability of these devices across their broad (100's of nm) spectral bandwidths is essential to realize their full potential as Doppler calibrators. However, published descriptions remain limited to small bandwidths or short timespans. We present a $\sim6$ month broadband stability monitoring campaign of the Fabry-P\'{e}rot etalon system deployed with the near-infrared Habitable Zone Planet Finder spectrograph (HPF). We monitor the wavelengths of each of $\sim3500$ resonant modes measured in HPF spectra of this Fabry-P\'{e}rot etalon (free spectral range = 30 GHz, bandwidth = 820 - 1280 nanometers), leveraging the accuracy and precision of an electro-optic frequency comb reference. These results reveal chromatic structure in the Fabry-P\'{e}rot mode locations and in their evolution with time. We measure an average drift on the order of 2 cm s $^{-1}$ d$^{-1}$, with local departures up to $\pm5$ cm s $^{-1}$ d$^{-1}$. We discuss these behaviors in the context of the Fabry-P\'{e}rot etalon mirror dispersion and other optical properties of the system, and the implications for the use of similar systems for precise Doppler measurements. Our results show that this system supports the wavelength calibration of HPF at the $\lesssim10$ cm s $^{-1}$ level over a night and at the $\lesssim30$ cm s $^{-1}$ level over $\sim10$ d. Our results also highlight the need for long-term and spectrally-resolved study of similar systems that will be deployed to support Doppler measurement precision approaching $\sim10$ cm s $^{-1}$., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal

The Habitable zone Planet Finder (HPF) is a fiber fed precise radial velocity spectrograph at the 10 m Hobby Eberly Telescope (HET). Due to its fixed altitude design, the HET pupil changes appreciably across a track, leading to significant changes of the fiber far-field illumination. HPF's fiber scrambler is designed to suppress the impact of these illumination changes on the radial velocities -- but the residual impact on the radial velocity measurements has yet to be probed on sky. We use GJ 411, a bright early type (M2) M dwarf to probe the effects of far-field input trends due to these pupil variations on HPF radial velocities (RVs). These large changes ($\sim$ 2x) in pupil area and centroid present a harsh test of HPF's far-field scrambling. Our results show that the RVs are effectively decoupled from these extreme far-field input changes due to pupil centroid offsets, attesting to the effectiveness of the scrambler design. This experiment allows us to test the impact of these changes with large pupil variation on-sky, something we would not easily be able to do at a conventional optical telescope. While the pupil and illumination changes expected at these other telescopes are small, scaling from our results enables us to estimate and bound these effects, and show that they are controllable even for the new and next generation of RV instruments in their quest to beat down instrumental noise sources towards the goal of a few cm/s., Comment: 16 pages.
