The reinvestment of Southeast Asia at the turn of the 21st century is an issue that the United Kingdom has not failed to address in order to maintain its position on the world stage. Whether strategic, diplomatic or economic, British objectives have intrinsically been linked to a quest for influence in this region since the eve of independence. As a channel for and actor of international cultural relations, information is a lever of influence on which press agencies, such as Reuters, rely to participate in the circulation of representations and in the cultural projection of Britain.

Phymatodiscidae fam. nov. is diagnosed, with Phymatodiscus as the type genus. A new genus, Bardizon gen. nov., with Bardizon eotvosi sp. nov. (from Indonesia) as the type species, is erected to accommodate the Phymatodiscus species with an eye-like dorsal depression. Six Phymatodiscus species are reclassified as Bardizon: B. aokii (Hiramatsu, 1985), comb. nov., B. haradai (Hiramatsu, 1985), comb. nov., B. oculatus (Hirschmann, 1977), comb. nov., B. kuni (Kontschán & Starý, 2011), comb. nov., B. insolitus (Kontschán & Ripka, 2016), comb. nov., and B. malayicus (Kontschán & Starý, 2012), comb. nov. The new species differs from the previously described congeners in the sculptural pattern, the shapes of the dorsal and ventral setae, and the sculptural pattern of the sternal shield of the male and the genital shield of the female. A list of all known phymatodiscid species is presented. Phymatodiscus titanicus (Berlese, 1905) is moved to the genus Bostocktrachys: B. titanicus (Berlese, 1905), comb. nov. Objective: A study was conducted to determine the chemical composition of banana meal and rice bran from Australia or South-East Asia and test the hypothesis that there are no differences in rice bran produced in different countries, but there are differences between full-fat and defatted rice bran. Methods: Two sources of banana meal and 22 sources of rice bran (full-fat or defatted) from Australia or South-East Asia were used. All samples were analyzed for dry matter, gross energy, nitrogen, amino acids (AA), acid hydrolyzed ether extract (AEE), ash, minerals, total starch, insoluble dietary fiber, and soluble dietary fiber. Banana meal was also analyzed for sugars including glucose, fructose, maltose, sucrose, stachyose, and raffinose. Results: Chemical analysis demonstrated that banana meal from the Philippines is primarily composed of starch. Full-fat rice bran from Australia had greater (p<0.05) concentrations of AEE, lysine, and glycine than samples from the Philippines and Vietnam. Full-fat rice bran from Australia and Thailand had greater (p<0.05) concentrations of gross energy and most AA than rice bran from Vietnam. Full-fat rice bran from Australia had greater (p<0.05) concentrations of tryptophan and manganese than all other sources, but full-fat rice bran from the Philippines contained less (p<0.05) zinc than all other sources of rice bran. Gross energy, AEE, and copper were greater (p<0.05) in full-fat rice bran compared with defatted rice bran, but defatted rice bran contained more (p<0.05) crude protein, ash, insoluble dietary fiber, total dietary fiber, AA, and some minerals than full-fat rice bran. Conclusion: Banana meal is a high-energy source that can be used as an alternative ingredient in livestock diets. Full-fat rice bran from Australia and Thailand contained more concentrations of AEE and AA than samples from the Philippines or Vietnam. As China has taken its place at the heart of the ASEAN economy, as well as global maritime and financial traffic, it has continued to internationalise its businesses at an accelerated rate and in some of the most technologically advanced ways. Singapore has been a key destination since it began its massive investments in the region. Like other foreign investors, Chinese companies have targeted logistics, manufacturing and high value-added services. But now it seems that Chinese investment is focusing on the digital economy, which can be traced through the study of the projects and acquisitions of two key players: Alibaba and Huawei. This paper measures, characterises and contextualises Chinese OFDIs in Singapore from 2000 to 2022 in order to show how, through increasing investment in Southeast Asia's richest economy, China is consolidating both its own power in the digital domain and Singapore's position of regional superiority.

Most of the extraordinary biodiversity richness of South-East Asian countries is concentrated in the national parks and other Protected Areas, with species-rich turtle communities surviving mostly in these reserves where their natural habitats are better preserved. However, very few studies have documented the turtle species richness of the various Protected Areas in Vietnam, which is not only one of the hotspots of chelonian diversity in the world but also one of the countries where their exploitation is the highest. Here, the diversity of turtles is studied in the Bach Ma National Park in central Vietnam, mainly characterised by forested hills and mountains, with ponds and streams of various shapes and structures. The study was carried out by conducting (i) semi-structured interviews of hunters recruited through a snow-ball procedure in local villages, (ii) inspection of turtle individuals in their hands, (iii) field surveys along random transects inspecting the various microhabitats used by these reptiles. We observed a total of 15 species, out of which 14 (93.3%) are threatened, based on IUCN Red List. A natural hybrid of Cuora bourreti × C. mouhotii obsti (Cuora «serrata») was observed. Three species (Cuora bourreti, Manouria impressa, Platysternon megacephalum) were the most frequently encountered species according to our interviewees. We conclude that, in order to enhance the conservation status of the turtle communities at the local level, it would be important (i) to increase the number of rangers patrolling the study area in the rainy season (from April to September) and (ii) to list the hunter's names in the villages surrounding the Bach Ma National Park and to convince them to sign an agreement with the local authorities to avoid hunting turtles within the Protected Area.

A new species of Tapinella Enderlein, 1908 from Phuket Island, Thailand named Tapinella phuketensis n. sp. was described. It was found in a rain forest east of Karon Village at the west coast of the island. The species is unique in having blackish-brown wings with a white stripe in their middle part.

Cambodian waters historically supported significant nesting populations of marine turtles up to the early 20th century. However, although fishing and coastal development have intensified, marine turtle conservation has received little recent attention. We collate the available information on Cambodian marine turtles by summarizing NGO and government data from provincial consultations, fisheries surveys and nesting beach surveys, and synthesize our findings into recommendations for the conservation of marine turtles in Cambodia. The available data indicate that a small and highly threatened marine turtle population persists, despite significant declines driven by intense historical harvesting, widespread bycatch, loss of nesting habitat, marine wildlife trade and ongoing poor compliance with wildlife protection regulations. To improve the conservation status of Cambodian turtles, we recommend (1) revising relevant legislation to better protect marine turtle habitats whilst increasing compliance with gear restrictions and threatened species laws in priority sites, (2) trialling alternative fishing gear or gear modifications to reduce bycatch, (3) continuing capacity building for locally driven marine turtle conservation science, (4) identifying and mapping beaches with high nesting potential and protecting them from further coastal development, and (5) investing in transboundary collaborations to improve the monitoring and management of the turtle populations that range between Cambodia and neighbouring countries.

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder of which prevalence has been increasing steadily all over the world. There is a need of understanding the role of tobacco products in diabetes mellitus, especially smokeless tobacco (ST) products. Objective: To analyze if ST is a determinant for T2DM among patients in South East Asia Region (SEAR) and secondly to obtain the pooled prevalence of use of ST in T2DM patients/participants from these studies. Materials and Methods: PubMed, Google Scholar, EBSCO, and Scopus are the databases that were searched to find desired manuscripts, which fulfilled the inclusion criteria to undertake this systematic review and meta-analysis (SRMA). Meta-analysis was carried out to determine the pooled effect size for the odds ratio of ST use in T2DM with 95% CI. MedCalc statistical software was used followed by the DerSimonian and Laird method under the random effect model. Results: A total of 8 manuscripts were involved in the systematic review and 7 in the meta-analysis. Odds of 1.39 indicating increased frequency of using ST among T2DM patients or survey participants was observed, which was not significant with C.I. 95% (0.843–2.288) and P < 0.001 with high heterogeneity. The pooled prevalence of use of ST in T2DM is 24.08% (CI 15.67 to 33.64) under random effect model with I2 inconsistency of 97.16% in 8 studies from India and Bangladesh. Conclusion: This pooled analysis shows that ST use is not a risk factor for T2DM. The number of studies included in the SRMA from SEAR is limited having no representation from Myanmar, Bhutan, Timor Leste, and Sri Lanka.

Objective: To analyze the sociological support system available for left-behind wives of male outmigrants and develop a model that predicts the antenatal care (ANC) services utilization. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in rural regions of the Patna district, India. The sample size (n=328) was estimated using Cochran's formula. Five parameters of the social support system were identified (autonomy, spousal support, family support, social circle support, and government support). The score for each was calculated as a composite score using multiple variables; these served as independent variables. The respondents were categorized as efficient and non-efficient users of ANC service based on established criteria. Results: The regression results showed that four out of five social parameters had a significant effect on ANC behavior. Spousal support was the strongest predictor (standardized regression coefficient β=0.57, OR 1.16, 95% CI 1.08-1.79, P=0.007). Government support was found to be the second strongest predictor (β=0.40, OR 1.49, 95% CI 1.04-2.14, P=0.027), followed by family support (β=0.31, OR 1.36, 95% CI 1.23-2.57, P=0.034) and autonomy (β=0.11, OR 1.32, 95% CI 1.11-2.26, P=0.030). The social circle support was found to be non-significant in predicting ANC behavior (P>0.05). Conclusions: The policymakers could focus on the identified predictors to strengthen and modify the existing policies for left-behind wives of male outmigrants. The need of the hour is a strategic intervention for behavioral modification of not only the left-behind wives but also their family members along with reinforcement of the existing social-security net. One strategy we suggest is to launch an awareness campaign focusing on husbands (male outmigrants) and family members.

Background: From 2008 to 2020, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence and mortality increased by approximately 50% and 47%, respectively, in South-East Asia (SEA). The human development index (HDI) influences various lifestyle choices (including physical activity), which may contribute to the prevalence of CRC in this region, distinct from factors related to medical or hereditary history. This review aims to evaluate and demonstrate the impacts and association of HDI with age-standardized rates (ASR) of CRC incidence and mortality in SEA. Methods: Utilizing data from the GLOBOCAN 2020, this study analyzed ASR for CRC incidence and mortality in each SEA country. Concurrently, the HDI for 2021 in these nations was gathered from the Human Development Reports. Using Spearman correlation analysis, we investigated the link between CRC ASR (incidence and mortality) and HDI indicators, including life expectancy at birth, mean years of schooling, and Gross National Income per Capita (2017 PPP$). The statistical significance threshold was set at P<0.05. Results: The statistical analysis revealed noteworthy positive correlations between HDI and its components (life expectancy at birth, mean years of schooling, and Gross National Income per Capita) with the ASR for incidence. Specifically, Spearman's rho values were 0.834, 0.755, 0.827, and 0.882, respectively. Similarly, significant correlations were observed between HDI and its constituents with ASR for mortality, with corresponding values of 0.720, 0.755, 0.718, and 0.782 at a 5% significance level. Conclusion: Countries with a high HDI exhibit a dual impact influence by fostering economic growth while potentially posing challenges to public health. Despite very high HDI nations demonstrating successful CRC screening programs that lower both incidence and mortality rates, various SEA countries face impediments in implementing such screenings. The impact of diet and lifestyle on CRC burdens is particularly pronounced in medium HDI countries, underscoring the significance of unprocessed diets and an active lifestyle in mitigating the prevalence of CRC. Myotis muricola species group, being common and widespread across South-East Asia and Australasia, is highly complicated from a taxonomy point, and a combined use of different methods is required to solve subjects of its phylogeny, taxonomy and species delimitation. We try to use nuclear DNA for clarification of the taxonomic position and status of the Moluccan whiskered bat, Myotis ater, and in particular its population from mainland Asia mainland Asia. Following our results, individual nuclear markers showed weak phylogenetic signal and commonly provide controversial and low-supported topologies. The combined analysis of several nuclear genes gives a tree topology similar to the mitochondrial one, but with greatly smaller distances. Mitochondrial data, as well as morphometric data, show a separation of M. ater from M. muricola and, at the same time, a similar level of diversification between island and continental populations of M. ater. Unfortunately, nuDNA data at our disposal is not enough to come to reliable conclusions, but we may assume that continental Asia is inhabited by an undescribed taxon related to M. ater. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of suicidal behaviors, i.e. suicidal ideation (SI), suicidal plan (SP), and suicidal attempt (SA) among adolescents with a focus on parental and peer support in eight South-East Asian countries including Bangladesh, Bhutan, Indonesia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand. Data were drawn from Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) covering 42,888 adolescents aged 11–17 years. Weighted prevalence of SI, SP, and SA along with country specific prevalence was computed and binary logistic regression was used to identify associated risk factors. Among 42,888 adolescents 19,113 (44.9%) were males and 23,441 (55.1%) females. Overall prevalence of SI, SP and SA is 9.10%, 10.42% and 8.54%, respectively. Myanmar demonstrated the lowest SI (1.07%) and SP (0.18%) whereas lowest SA was found in Indonesia (3.79%). Maldives had the highest prevalence of SI, SP and SA which were 14.13%, 19.02% and 13.38% respectively. Overall suicidal behaviors were associated with being female [AOR: SI-1.26 (1.06,1.50), SP-1.34 (1.14,1.57)], high levels of sedentary behavior [AOR: SI-2.08 (1.62,2.66), SP-1.86 (1.49,2.32), SA-1.96 (1.45,2.64)], involvement in physical fighting [AOR: SI-1.30 (1.07,1.58), SP-1.37 (1.14,1.65), SA-1.50 (1.17,1.90)], being seriously injured [AOR: SI-1.40 (1.17,1.67), SP-1.44 (1.22,1.69), SA-1.74 (1.39,2.17)], being bullied [AOR: SI- 1.68 (1.39,2.02), SP-1.34 (1.12,1.60), SA-1.88 (1.50,2.36)], feeling lonely (most of time or always) [AOR: SI-3.41(2.60,4.46), SP-1.92 (1.48,2.47), SA-2.25 (1.62,3.13)], lack of parental support (never checking homework) [AOR: SI-1.59 (1.25,2.02), SP-1.52 (1.22,1.90)] and not having close friends [AOR: SI-2.19 (1.66,2.89), SP-2.26 (1.74,2.94), SA-4.23 (3.10,5.78)]. Though prevalence of suicidal behaviors varies, a range of cross-cutting risk factors exists that warrant further examination. A random effects meta-analysis was used to estimate the pooled prevalence of HIV infection within minority indigenous populations of the South-East Asia (SEAR) and Western Pacific Regions (WPR). Sub-group analyses were conducted, and the sources of heterogeneity explored through meta-regression. The majority of studies were undertaken in high HIV risk subpopulations. There was a paucity of data for many countries with data from China representing 70% of the comparative studies. Within minority indigenous populations the pooled prevalence of HIV infection was 13.7% (95% CI 8.9, 19) and 8.4% (95% CI 6.3, 10.7) among other populations. The prevalence differential between populations was significant in the WPR (adjusted odds ratio 1.1, 95% CI 1.0, 1.2). Across both regions, in contrast to other populations, minority indigenous did not experience any significant reduction in HIV prevalence over the years of data collection.
