Multipeak negative differential resistance (NDR) molecular devices are designed from first principles. The effect of NDR is associated with the non-linear Stark shifts and the electron localization within the conductive region and contacts. Deep I(V)-curve well is formed when the aromatic molecule, containing intramolecular hydrogen bond, is connected to each lead by the double-branch contacts. This effect occurs at the same voltage where a single-junction case exhibits only a flat step in the current characteristics. The multipeak oscillations arise from the mutual effect of the Stark shifts located at the electron-rich contacts and parts of the molecule - this opens the route for further tailoring the desired properties., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

A novel mechanism for switching a molecular junction based on a proton transfer reaction triggered by an external electrostatic field is proposed. As a specific example to demonstrate the feasibility of the mechanism, the tautomers [2,5-(4-hydroxypyridine)] and {2,5-[4(1H)-pyridone]} are considered. Employing a combination of first-principles electronic structure calculations and Landauer transport theory, we show that both tautomers exhibit very different conductance properties and realize the "on" and "off" states of a molecular switch. Moreover, we provide a proof of principle that both forms can be reversibly converted into each other using an external electrostatic field., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

The paper presents the results of grid power quality tests and wide frequency electromagnetic radiation level tests to which home power networks with photovoltaic systems have been subjected. The said results are meaningful from the point of view of safety and compatibility of electrical devices and the power supply system they are connected to. The tests covered stability of phase voltage and its frequency, harmonic level flicker, as well as RF radiated and emission levels. The measurements performed provide an answer to the question concerning the level of compliance of randomly selected home-installed PV systems with applicable recommendations and regulations concerning electromagnetic compatibility. The ability to meet the applicable standards translates into the health and safety of building inhabitants, which is the ultimate goal. Legal regulations concerning electromagnetic compatibility of renewable energy sources are consistent throughout the entire European Union

- Abstract
The Polish standard of treatment with racemic ketamine for patients with depressive disorders was developed by a Working Group appointed by the National Consultant in the field of psychiatry. Despite the wide range of available medications, as many as one-third of depressed patients do not respond to standard antidepressant treatment, raising the need for an ongoing search for new effective and safe therapies. In recent years, the possible role of overactivity of the glutamatergic system in the etiopathogenesis of depression has again attracted the attention of many experts. The possibility of using substances with a modulating effect on the glutamatergic system in the treatment of depressive disorders has been postulated, among others, the long-known anesthetic ketamine, which is a noncompetitive NMDA receptor antagonist. This paper summarizes the results of studies on the efficacy and safety of racemic ketamine (administered intravenously) in the treatment of patients with depressive symptoms in the course of both unipolar and bipolar affective disorder, and, meeting the expectations of many practicing psychiatrists wishing to broaden the range of therapies offered to their patients, presents recommendations on indications, contraindications, precautions and the treatment regimen itself with intravenous ketamine for patients with mood disorders. 113. Evaluating a Health Equity Podcast for Provider Practice Change: A Cross-sectional Study.

- Abstract
• Health equity education can be widely disseminated via podcasts. • Podcasts can be used to create standardized microlearning education on health equity. • Pediatric nurse practitioners must be aware of their differences and implicit bias. Podcasts are effective tools for disseminating health education. This study aimed to disseminate a health equity curriculum on best practices. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted as part of the Health Equity in Pediatrics podcast series between May and June 2023. Listeners were surveyed following each episode, and both quantitative and qualitative responses of voluntary respondents were analyzed. Episodes were downloaded 4,095 times. Survey respondents (n = 66) reported increased knowledge and intended practice change inspired by the podcast. Qualitative responses included themes surrounding knowledge, appreciation, and practice change. Podcasts are easily disseminated to wide audiences and can improve health equity knowledge while inspiring practice change. This style can help listeners identify practices that suggest implicit bias and implement more equitable best practices. Measurements of the Hall effect and the resistivity on precisely-patterned YBCO thin films in magnetic fields B from 0.5 to 6 T oriented parallel to the sample crystallographic c axis reveal a sign reversal of the Hall coefficient for B <= 3 T. The data are compared to the full, quantitative expressions based on the renormalized fluctuation model for the Hall conductivity. The model offers a satisfactory understanding of the experimental results, for moderate fields and temperatures near the critical region, provided that the inhomogeneity of the critical temperature distribution is also taken into account. We also propose an approach how vortex pinning that strongly affects the magnitude of the Hall coefficient can be incorporated in the model., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, to be published in Phys. The purpose of this study was to examine the influences of various facets of middle school mathematics teachers' practical rationality on their instructional decision making as they plan to enact the Common Core State Standards for Mathematical Practice, CCSS-MP1 (perseverance in problem solving) and CCSS-MP3 (communicating and critiquing). The study expands and confronts some of the literature that lacks specifics to instructional decisions made by middle school mathematics teachers, particularly with regards to their disposition, the operationalization of their MKT, and the connection to the institutional obligations affecting their practical rationality. This study provides insight into three facets impacting middle school mathematics teachers' instructional decision making with regards to CCSS-MP1 and CCSS-MP3. First with regards to teacher disposition, a facilitative role using a problem solving approach is preferred. Secondly, curricular choices are made directly tied to the teachers' MKT. Finally, although the teachers recognized that they had certain obligations to the institution, they also held the belief that the institution was obligated to them as well. The two main obligations required from the institution were the need for professional development provided by the district and appropriate resources that promote problem solving and communication. These results suggest the need for professional development for in-service and preservice teachers in the facilitative approach to mathematics instructions, more time for teachers to work collaboratively in professional learning communities (PLCs), professional development for district administrators, board members and parents with regards to a more rigorous and investigative approach to mathematics instruction. Femtosecond pump-probe studies show that carrier dynamics in MgB2 films is governed by the sub-ps electron-phonon (e-ph) relaxation present at all temperatures, the few-ps e-ph process well pronounced below 70 K, and the sub-ns superconducting relaxation below Tc. The amplitude of the superconducting component versus temperature follows the superposition of the isotropic dirty gap and the 3-dimensional gap dependences, closing at two different Tc values. Superconducting MgB2 thin films were prepared on 50-micrometer-thick, flexible polyamide Kapton-E foils by vacuum co-deposition of Mg and B precursors with nominal thickness of about 100 nm and a special ex-situ rapid annealing process in an Ar or vacuum atmosphere. In the optimal annealing process, the Mg-B films were heated to approximately 600 C, but at the same time, the backside of the structures was attached to a water-cooled radiator to avoid overheating of the plastic substrate. The resulting MgB2 films were amorphous with the onset of the superconducting transition at T_(c,on) about 33 K and the transition width of approximately 3 K. The critical current density was > 7x10^5 A/cm^2 at 4.2 K, and its temperature dependence indicated a granular film composition with a network of intergranular weak links. The films could be deposited on large-area foils (up to 400 cm^2) and, after processing, cut into any shapes (e.g., stripes) with scissors or bent multiple times, without any observed degradation of their superconducting properties., Comment: 3 figures

Measurements of the Hall effect and the resistivity in twinned YBa2Cu3O7-delta thin films in magnetic fields B oriented parallel to the crystallographic c-axis and to the twin boundaries reveal a double sign reversal of the Hall coefficient for B below 1 T. In high transport current densities, or with B tilted off the twin boundaries by 5 degrees, the second sign reversal vanishes. The power-law scaling of the Hall conductivity to the longitudinal conductivity in the mixed state is strongly modified in the regime of the second sign reversal. Our observations are interpreted as strong, disorder-type dependent vortex pinning and confirm that the Hall conductivity in high temperature superconductors is not independent of pinning., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

122. A Latent Variable Path Analysis Model of Secondary Physics Enrollment in New York State.

- Abstract
Physics is a fundamental science course and can be valuable to all students, however, enrollment at the high school level is low. This study tries to identify factors that influence high school student enrollment and achievement. Raw data was obtained from the New York State Education Department on magnetic tapes with over 300,000 records containing information about individual classes. From the data sets, variables determined to be appropriate for the model were selected, the latent variables identified, and their relationships explored. There are six major points identified in the study: (1) there has been little change in enrollment in the past 20 years; (2) school level variables, including size of school, instructional facilities, and teacher experience have the strongest relationship to physics enrollment; (3) variables external to the school have the biggest impact on physics achievement; (4) larger schools have disproportionately fewer students enrolled in physics; (5) schools with a higher percentage going to college have a greater physics enrollment; and (6) in schools with a higher percentage of females enrolled in physics, the relationship between achievement in previous science courses and physics achievement is much stronger. We generated pulses of electromagnetic radiation in the terahertz (THz) frequency range by optical excitation of Co_{2}Fe_{0.4}Mn_{0.6}Si (CFMS)/normal-metal (NM) bilayer structures. The CFMS is a Heusler alloy showing a band gap in one spin channel and is therefore a half metal. We compared the THz emission efficiency in a systematic manner for four different CFMS/NM bilayers, where NM was either Pt, Ta, Cr, or Al. Our measurements show that the THz intensity is highest for a Pt capping. We also demonstrate the tunability of the THz amplitude by varying the magnetic field for all four bilayers. We attribute the THz generation to the inverse spin Hall effect. In order to investigate the role of the interface in THz generation, we measured the spin mixing conductance for each CFMS/NM bilayer using a ferromagnetic resonance method. We found that the spin-orbit coupling cannot completely describe the THz generation in the bilayers and that the spin transmission efficiency of the CFMS/NM interface and the spin diffusion length, as well as the oxidation of the NM layer, play crucial roles in the THz emission process.

- Abstract
Exposures to ambient ultrafine particle (UFP) air pollution (AP) during the early postnatal period in mice (equivalent to human third trimester brain development) produce male-biased changes in brain structure, including ventriculomegaly, reduced brain myelination, alterations in neurotransmitters and glial activation, as well as impulsive-like behavioral characteristics, all of which are also features characteristic of male-biased neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). The purpose of this study was to ascertain the extent to which inhaled Cu, a common contaminant of AP that is also dysregulated across multiple NDDs, might contribute to these phenotypes. For this purpose, C57BL/6J mice were exposed from postnatal days 4–7 and 10–13 for 4 hr/day to inhaled copper oxide (CuxOy) nanoparticles at an environmentally relevant concentration averaging 171.9 ng/m3. Changes in brain metal homeostasis and neurotransmitter levels were determined following termination of exposure (postnatal day 14), while behavioral changes were assessed in adulthood. CuxOyinhalation modified cortical metal homeostasis and produced male-biased disruption of striatal neurotransmitters, with marked increases in dopaminergic function, as well as excitatory/inhibitory imbalance and reductions in serotonergic function. Impulsive-like behaviors in a fixed ratio (FR) waiting-for-reward schedule and a fixed interval (FI) schedule of food reward occurred in both sexes, but more prominently in males, effects which could not be attributed to altered locomotor activity or short-term memory. Inhaled Cu as from AP exposures, at environmentally relevant levels experienced during development, may contribute to impaired brain function, as shown by its ability to disrupt brain metal homeostasis and striatal neurotransmission. In addition, its ability to evoke impulsive-like behavior, particularly in male offspring, may be related to striatal dopaminergic dysfunction that is known to mediate such behaviors. As such, regulation of air Cu levels may be protective of public health.

137. Alzheimer's disease‐associated post‐translational modifications of tau influence tau propagation.

- Abstract
Background: In Alzheimer's disease (AD), tau accumulates with a stereotyped progressive involvement of brain regions. The cellular mechanism for this is the neuron‐to‐neuron propagation of tau, but the factors that influence tau propagation are not fully understood. We hypothesize that AD‐associated post‐translational modifications (PTMs) of tau reduce its propagation since lysines are critical for LRP1‐mediated tau uptake. Method: A construct was designed to model tau propagation in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells and allow identification of donor and recipient cells by immunocytochemistry and flow cytometry. In addition to the wildtype (WT) tau sequence, constructs were made with pseudophosphorylation and pseudoacetylation mutations corresponding to the phosphorylations and acetylations found on low molecular weight (LMW) and high molecular weight (HMW) tau species in AD brains. Additionally, individual PTM mimic mutations corresponding to PTMs of the LMW tau species were made. The constructs were transfected into CHO cells and tau propagation was assessed by flow cytometry after 48 hours. Statistical analysis was performed by ANOVA with adjustment for multiple comparisons. Result: Tau propagation using this cell culture model was demonstrated by immunocytochemistry and flow cytometry. Comparison of the WT, LMW‐mimic (8D2Q mutant), and HMW‐mimic (20D3Q mutant) tau propagation constructs revealed that the 8D2Q and 20D3Q mutants displayed reduced tau propagation compared to WT by 23.7% (p = 0.0186) and 26.5% (p = 0.0087), respectively. Comparing the ten single mutant constructs to WT, T181D and T231D showed increased tau propagation by 20.3% (p = 0.0002) and 15.9% (p = 0.0094), respectively. Compared to WT, T217D, K281Q, K353Q, and S404D showed reduced tau propagation by 17.3% (p = 0.0030), 15.3% (p = 0.0123), 23.7% (p <0.0001), and 16.6% (p = 0.0046), respectively. Conclusion: The mimics of AD‐associated tau PTMs found on LMW and HMW tau reduce tau propagation, consistent with the initial hypothesis. The impact of individual PTM mimics on tau propagation is variable, but notably both pseudoacetylation mimics reduce propagation, possibly due to lower affinity with LRP1. Understanding how AD‐associated tau PTMs impact tau propagation may suggest novel targets to slow the progression of AD pathology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) are a family of ligand-dependent nuclear receptors, which control the transcription of genes involved in energy homeostasis and inflammation and cell proliferation/differentiation. Alterations of PPARs’ expression and/or activity are commonly associated with metabolic disorders occurring with obesity, type 2 diabetes, and fatty liver disease, as well as with inflammation and cancer. Emerging evidence now indicates that microRNAs (miRNAs), a family of small noncoding RNAs, which fine-tune gene expression, play a significant role in the pathophysiological mechanisms regulating the expression and activity of PPARs. Herein, the regulation of PPARs by miRNAs is reviewed in the context of metabolic disorders, inflammation, and cancer. The reciprocal control of miRNAs expression by PPARs, as well as the therapeutic potential of modulating PPAR expression/activity by pharmacological compounds targeting miRNA, is also discussed.

- Abstract
One of the benefits of using films in sociology class is the opportunity media representations give students to "experience" situations that are uncommon in their daily lives. In this note the authors outline research in education that demonstrates the role of imagery and experiential learning in fostering a deeper understanding of material for students. They then focus on the ability of one film ("Remember the Titans") to transport students to a place they will never experience--racially charged 1971 Virginia--and to illustrate social psychological processes of conflict reduction (contact, superordinate goals, and shared identities) as well as the link between micro-interaction, social institutions, and larger patterns of social stratification. After elaborating how the authors have used the film in class, they present findings from their students that demonstrate the effectiveness of the film for enhancing student understanding. - Abstract
This article discusses the use of ethnographic interviews as a resource for developing intercultural understanding by students of French. Language teaching has traditionally viewed languages as discrete systems disconnected from the speakers' understanding of themselves and from native speakers of the target language. This poses a problem for learning because it ignores the intimate relationship between language and identity. Using ethnographic interviews the study explores the language learners' understanding of self in relation to the self of the native speaker. The project draws on recent work in the development of intercultural language learning and shares with it an emphasis on the experience of engagement in languages and cultures from the learner's point of view. The study concerns a piece of classroom-based research conducted by a lecturer in French with a group of third year students at the University of South Australia. This group comprises both students who entered the program at the university after having completed Year 12 French at school and students who commenced the study of French at university level. (The two pathways merge at the third year level in this program). The research is based on the documentation of participating students' experiences. While it draws on exemplars emanating from the teaching of a third year class of university students, application of findings at all phases of language learning is discussed.

147. Parents' Discord and Divorce, Parent-Child Relationships and Subjective Well-Being in Early Adulthood: Is Feeling Close to Two Parents Always Better than Feeling Close to One?

We assessed the associations between parents' marital discord and divorce, patterns of parent-child relationships, and adult children's subjective well-being. Parental divorce and marital conflict appeared to increase the odds that children were close to neither parent in adulthood. Parental divorce (but not marital conflict) appeared to increase the odds that children were close to one parent only. Drawing on parental resources and balance perspectives, we tested competing hypotheses about parent-child relationships and offspring subjective well-being. Offspring had the highest level of well-being when they grew up in a low-conflict married family and were close to both parents. In cases of divorce and high levels of marital conflict, however, children were no better off if they were close to both parents than to one parent only. (Contains 3 tables and 1 figure.)

BackgroundPrior studies indicated a decrease in the incidences of aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage (aSAH) during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. We evaluated differences in the incidence, severity of aSAH presentation, and ruptured aneurysm treatment modality during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic compared with the preceding year.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional study including 49 countries and 187 centres. We recorded volumes for COVID-19 hospitalisations, aSAH hospitalisations, Hunt-Hess grade, coiling, clipping and aSAH in-hospital mortality. Diagnoses were identified by International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, codes or stroke databases from January 2019 to May 2021.ResultsOver the study period, there were 16 247 aSAH admissions, 344 491 COVID-19 admissions, 8300 ruptured aneurysm coiling and 4240 ruptured aneurysm clipping procedures. Declines were observed in aSAH admissions (−6.4% (95% CI −7.0% to −5.8%), p=0.0001) during the first year of the pandemic compared with the prior year, most pronounced in high-volume SAH and high-volume COVID-19 hospitals. There was a trend towards a decline in mild and moderate presentations of subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) (mild: −5% (95% CI −5.9% to –4.3%), p=0.06; moderate: −8.3% (95% CI −10.2% to –6.7%), p=0.06) but no difference in higher SAH severity. The ruptured aneurysm clipping rate remained unchanged (30.7% vs 31.2%, p=0.58), whereas ruptured aneurysm coiling increased (53.97% vs 56.5%, p=0.009). There was no difference in aSAH in-hospital mortality rate (19.1% vs 20.1%, p=0.12).ConclusionDuring the first year of the pandemic, there was a decrease in aSAH admissions volume, driven by a decrease in mild to moderate presentation of aSAH. There was an increase in the ruptured aneurysm coiling rate but neither change in the ruptured aneurysm clipping rate nor change in aSAH in-hospital mortality.Trial registration numberNCT04934020.

149. Nonresident Fathers' Contributions to Adolescent Well-Being

- Abstract
Using data from 453 adolescents in Wave 2 of the National Survey of Families and Households, we examine how multiple dimensions of nonresident father involvement are associated with different dimensions of child well-being. Father-child relationship quality and responsive fathering are modestly associated with fewer externalizing and internalizing problems among adolescents. The quality of the mother-child relationship, however, has stronger effects on child well-being. Nevertheless, even if adolescents have weak ties to mothers, those who have strong ties to nonresident fathers exhibit fewer internalizing problems and less acting out at school than adolescents who have weak ties to both parents. Adolescents are worst off on a range of outcomes when they have weak ties to both their mothers and nonresident fathers.
