119. Distribution of Contracaecum(Nematoda: Anisakidae) larvae in freshwater fish from the northern regions of South Africa

Abstract

A total of 1 847 fishes (16 species) from 14 reservoirs in northern and north-eastern regions of South Africa were collected and examined for larval Contracaecumspp. between 2005 and 2013. This study, the first to examine several potential second intermediate hosts, found Clarias gariepinus, Coptodon rendalli, Cyprinus carpio, Hydrocynus vittatus, Labeobarbus marequensis, Marcusenius macrolepidotus, Micropterus salmoides, Oreochromis mossambicusand Schilbe intermediusinfected with the third-stage larvae. Coptodon rendalli, Marcusenius macrolepidotusand Micropterus salmoidesare new host records for South Africa. A generalised linear model identified locality as the main factor affecting parasite burden.

Abstract

A study was made on some colloid chem. aspects of the oxide/electrolyte interface. Coulostatic pulse relaxation expts. were made on oxidized Ti/electrolyte interfaces using the H. P. Van Leeuwen method (1978). The potential transients can be transformed to complex impedance values and these data fitted to equiv. circuits contg. frequency independent elements by anal. with complex nonlinear least squares. Calcns. were made and a known model was found suitable, being based on a modified colloid chem. site dissocn. site binding model. This modification serves to reconcile the original model with exptl. results found at semiconductor/electrolyte electrodes: low values of the Helmholtz layer capacitance and at least 2 parallel impedance branches on the electrolyte side. Abstract

At const. c.d. the potential vs. log time graphs consist of sections with different slopes; so do the steady state potential vs. SO42- concn. graphs. At the same total c.d., the abrupt changes in slope occur at practically the same potentials. The change of potential with time is thus interpreted as being caused by the adsorption of sulfate species, which then become inactive in peroxodisulfate formation. Abstract

At sufficiently high potentials a Pt anode placed in a SO42-contg. soln. becomes partly covered by sulfate species, the oxide-covered Pt becoming confined to certain patches. On the sulfate-covered parts persulfate formation (via the discharge of SO42-) takes place almost exclusively, while O is evolved on the oxide-covered patches. Peroxymonosulfate (SO5-) is formed at the boundaries of the patches according to the reaction, SO4- + OH -> HSO5-. [on SciFinder (R)]

From the correlation of the current efficiency for peroxydisulfate formation in solns. of H2SO4, of K2SO4, and of (NH4)2SO4 with the actual SO42- concn., the conclusion is drawn that exclusively SO42- ions are involved in the peroxydisulfate formation. During S2O82- electrosynthesis, as sufficiently high potentials, a Pt anode in the SO42- soln. is covered by adsorbed SO42- species, the oxide-covered Pt becoming limited to isolated patches. The adsorption was obsd. by detns. of current efficiencies and potentials as a function of the concn. of S-contg. species at const. temp. and at various const. c.ds. The adsorbed SO42- essentially do not participate further in S2O82- formation, and SO42-, not HSO4-, are discharged on the SO42-covered areas of the electrode. Abstract

A predictive approach to entrepreneurship posits that precise planning is essential to entrepreneurial success; others claim a less predictive, action-oriented approach is likely to reduce the time it takes for new firms to emerge. We address this tension using theoretical insights from effectuation, a controversial theory of entrepreneurial action. We develop an empirical model capturing the influence of effectual heuristics and the dynamic cycles of expanding means and converging goals on time to emergence. Our analysis reveals that some heuristics of effectuation have a direct impact on reducing time to emergence; others are mediated through cycles of expanding means and converging goals. This study suggests that scholars need to take a more processual and nuanced approach when examining the impacts of non-predictive strategic choices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
