Abstract

We examined whether physical activity (PA) influences the association between birth weight and serum leptin in adolescents. The study comprised a total of 538 adolescents (315 girls), aged 12.5-17.49 years, born at term (≥ 37 weeks of gestation). We measured serum leptin levels and time engaged in moderate-vigorous PA (MVPA) by accelerometry. There was an interaction effect between birth weight and meeting the PA recommendations (60 min/day MVPA) on leptin levels in girls (P = 0.023) but not in boys (P = 0.809). Birth weight was negatively associated with leptin levels in girls not meeting the PA recommendations (i.e. more than 60 min/day of MVPA) (β = -0.096, P = 0.009), whereas no significant association was observed in those meeting the PA recommendations (β = -0.061, P = 0.433). In conclusion, meeting the PA recommendations may attenuate the negative effect of low birth weight on serum leptin levels in European female adolescents.

Abstract

Background: Although there is a growing interest in the epidemiology of sedentary behaviours, it is unknown whether sedentary behaviour questionnaires are broad markers of sedentary time. The aims of this study were to determine the: (i) reliability of the Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence (HELENA) screen time-based sedentary behaviour questionnaire; and (ii) its validity, i.e. the ability of the questionnaire to correctly rank adolescents according to the objectively measured sedentary time. Methods: A total of 183 adolescents (104 females aged 12.5–17.5 years) were involved in the reliability study. Participants completed the HELENA sedentary questionnaire twice (1 week apart). The validity study comprised 2048 (1212 females) adolescents (12.5–17.5 years of age) included in the HELENA cross-sectional study. Questions included television viewing, computer games, console games, Internet for study and non-study reasons and study during week and weekend days. We compared median values of sedentary time, using accelerometers, by tertiles of self-reported sedentary behaviours and their sum (composite sedentary score). Results: Reliability study: κ-values showed a good agreement (>0.7), except for Internet for study reasons (0.46 weekdays, 0.33 weekend). The questionnaire correctly classified boys’ sedentary time when analysed by specific behaviours and by a composite sedentary score. In girls, median values of objectively measured sedentary time were not different across tertiles of self-reported sedentary behaviours or the composite sedentary score. Conclusion: The HELENA sedentary questionnaire is reliable, yet only correctly classifies objectively measured sedentary time in boys.

Abstract

To examine the association of objectively assessed physical activity (PA) with markers of total and central body fat in adolescents, and to determine whether meeting the current PA recommendations (or = 60 min day(-1) of at least moderate intensity PA) is associated with reduced levels of total and central body fat.A total of 365 Spanish adolescents aged 12.5-17.5 years participated in this cross-sectional study. PA was assessed by accelerometry and expressed as average PA (counts per minute), and min day(-1) of light, moderate, moderate to vigorous (MVPA) and vigorous PA. MVPA was dichotomized into60 min day(-1) andor = 60. Total body fat was measured by DXA, BodPod and the sum of six skinfolds. Central body fat was measured by DXA at three regions (R1, R2 and R3), and waist circumference.All markers of central body fat were negatively associated with vigorous PA (P0.01) after controlling for sex, age and pubertal status. Abdominal adiposity measured at R1, R2 and R3 was also negatively associated with MVPA (Por = 0.001), and with average PA (P0.01). All markers of total body fat were negatively associated with vigorous PA (P0.01), MVPA (P0.01) and average PA (P0.05). Adolescents engaged on at least 60 min day(-1) MVPA presented lower levels of total (P0.05) and central body fat (Por = 0.01).The results suggest that vigorous PA may have a greater effect on preventing obesity in adolescents than does PA of lower intensity, whereas both average PA and at least moderate PA may have an impact on total and central body fat in youth.

Abstract

The MAXIV facility, currently under construction in Lund, Sweden, features two electron storage rings operated at 3GeV and 1.5GeV and optimized for the hard X-ray and soft X-ray/VUV spectral ranges, respectively. A 3GeV linear accelerator serves as a full-energy injector into both rings as well as a driver for a short-pulse facility, in which undulators produce X-ray pulses as short as 100fs. The 3GeV ring employs a multibend achromat (MBA) lattice to achieve, in a relatively short circumference of 528m, a bare lattice emittance of 0.33nmrad, which reduces to 0.2nmrad as insertion devices are added. The engineering implementation of the MBA lattice raises several technological problems. The large number of strong magnets per achromat calls for a compact design featuring small-gap combined-function magnets grouped into cells and sharing a common iron yoke. The small apertures lead to a low-conductance vacuum chamber design that relies on the chamber itself as a distributed copper absorber for the heat deposited by synchrotron radiation, while non-evaporable getter (NEG) coating provides for reduced photodesorption yields and distributed pumping. Finally, a low main frequency (100MHz) is chosen for the RF system yielding long bunches, which are further elongated by passively operated third-harmonic Landau cavities, thus alleviating collective effects, both coherent (e.g. resistive wall instabilities) and incoherent (intrabeam scattering). In this paper, we focus on the MAXIV 3GeV ring and present the lattice design as well as the engineering solutions to the challenges inherent to such a design. As the first realisation of a light source based on the MBA concept, the MAXIV 3GeV ring offers an opportunity for validation of concepts that are likely to be essential ingredients of future diffraction-limited light sources. © 2014 International Union of Crystallography.

Abstract

The aim of this work is to develop and test a method for generation of information on vegetation dynamics from high-spatial resolution data, such as Sentinel-2. In order to accomplish this, Sentinel-2 data were simulated from existing SPOT HRG and HRVIR scenes over Sweden. We used TIMESAT, a well-tested computer package for generating smooth seasonal profiles and generation of seasonality parameters, like start and end, length, amplitude, integrated values, seasonal maximum, derivatives, etc. The processing works on a pixel-by-pixel basis and is resistant to clouds and noise. Data gaps are handled, and quality information can be included to increase the fidelity of the fits. The pilot study demonstrated that TIMESAT was successful in fitting smooth model functions to the data, and generating seasonality parameters for the test area at 10 x 10 m resolution. We conclude that TIMESAT will be useful for generating vegetation dynamics data from high-spatial resolution data such as Sentinel-2. The smooth seasonal profiles will be extremely useful for driving high-resolution biophysical vegetation models, and the seasonality parameters will be excellent for change detection, and for studying trends in vegetation productivity and seasonality.

Abstract

We aimed to (a) examine the validity and reliability of the International FItness Scale (IFIS) in Spanish young adults and (b) compare the capacity of self-reported vs measured fitness to predict cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. The study comprised 276 participants (18–30 years). Fitness level (overall and specific components) was both self-reported (IFIS) and measured using standard fitness tests. Total and trunk fat was assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. We computed a previously validated metabolic syndrome score. A separate sample of 181 of same age and characteristics fulfilled IFIS twice for reliability purposes. The results of the present study support the validity and reliability of self-reported fitness, as measured by IFIS, in Spanish young adults. Our data also suggest that not only measured cardiorespiratory fitness but also self-reported cardiorespiratory fitness predicts CVD risk, as assessed by adiposity and metabolic syndrome indicators. The associations for muscular fitness (both reported and measured) differed depending on how it was expressed (i.e., absolute vs relative terms). Self-reported fitness, as assessed by IFIS, can be a good alternative when physical fitness cannot be measured in large surveys., Nuestro objetivo fue (a) examinar la validez y confiabilidad de la Escala Internacional de Fitness (IFIS) en adultos jóvenes españoles y (b) comparar la capacidad del fitness autoinformado frente al medido para predecir el riesgo de enfermedad cardiovascular (ECV). El estudio comprendió a 276 participantes (18-30 años). El nivel de condición física (componentes generales y específicos) fue autoinformado (IFIS) y medido mediante pruebas de condición física estándar. La grasa total y del tronco se evaluó mediante absorciometría de rayos X de energía dual. Calculamos una puntuación de síndrome metabólico previamente validada. Una muestra separada de 181 de la misma edad y características cumplió IFIS dos veces para propósitos de confiabilidad. Los resultados del presente estudio respaldan la validez y la fiabilidad del estado físico autoinformado, medido por IFIS, en adultos jóvenes españoles. Nuestros datos también sugieren que no solo la aptitud cardiorrespiratoria medida sino también la aptitud cardiorrespiratoria autoinformada predicen el riesgo de ECV, según lo evaluado por los indicadores de adiposidad y síndrome metabólico. Las asociaciones para la condición física muscular (tanto informadas como medidas) diferían dependiendo de cómo se expresara (es decir, términos absolutos versus relativos). El estado físico autoinformado, según lo evaluado por IFIS, puede ser una buena alternativa cuando el estado físico no se puede medir en encuestas grandes.

119. Recommended levels of physical activity to avoid an excess of body fat in European adolescents: the HELENA Study

Abstract

BACKGROUND: It is unclear how much physical activity is necessary to prevent obesity during adolescence. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine whether the current physical activity guidelines for youth are associated with a lower risk of excess of body fat in European adolescents. METHODS: A sample of 2094 adolescents from the HELENA cross-sectional study was selected. Levels of moderate, vigorous, and moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) were assessed using accelerometers. BMI and percentage of body fat (skinfolds) were calculated and used to categorize the adolescents as normal-weight/normal-fat, overweight/overfat, and obese. Data were collected during 2006-2007. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, performed in 2009, was used to determine thresholds that best discriminate between weight and body fat categories. RESULTS: ROC analysis showed that >/=18 minutes/day in vigorous physical activity and >/=55 minutes/day in MVPA significantly discriminated between normal-weight and overweight+obesity categories. Moreover, >/=9 minutes/day of vigorous physical activity and >/=49 minutes/day of MVPA discriminated between normal-fat and overfat/obese adolescents. Adolescents who did not meet the current physical activity guidelines for youth of 60 minutes/day in MVPA increased the risk of having overweight+obesity (OR=1.24, 95% CI=1.01, 1.534) and overfat+obesity (OR=1.79, 95% CI=1.33, 2.42). ORs increased when adolescents did not meet the guidelines of at least 15 minutes/day in vigorous physical activity. CONCLUSIONS: Current physical activity guidelines seem to be appropriate to prevent excess of body fat in European adolescents. Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the agreement between the ActiGraph accelerometer and the Bouchard diary to estimate energy expenditure (EE) in a Spanish adolescent population. Methods: Sixty-one Spanish adolescents, aged 12-16 years, were recruited for this study. The Bouchard diary and the ActiGraph were administered for 3 consecutive days. EE estimated by the Bouchard diary was calculated using 2 different MET category values (BD-Bouchard and BD-Bratteby). EE estimated by the ActiGraph was calculated using 3 predictive equations (AC-Trost, AC-Freedson, and AC-Ekelund). Participants with complete 24 h data were also analyzed to control the possible loss of accuracy. Agreement was examined by Pearson and concordance correlations, paired t-test, and Bland-Altman method. Results: Thirty-seven adolescents were included in the analyses with complete 72 h. Relationships between EE calculated by the Bouchard diary and the ActiGraph were high (ranged: r = 0.61-0.78). Concordance correlations were moderate (r c = 0.60) by BD-Bratteby and AC-Trost, and low using BD-Bratteby and AC-Ekelund (r c = 0.15). EE estimated by BD-Bratteby and AC-Trost also showed no significant differences (P> 0.05) and absolutely agree 0.0 ± 5.0 MJ/d (95% confidence interval: ± 0.90 MJ/d), but with wide limits of agreement (± 9.80 MJ/d). Relationships were higher and differences were smaller in the 72 h sample than in the 24 h sample. Conclusions: The Bouchard diary and the ActiGraph showed high relationships, moderate concordance, and large differences to estimate EE in Spanish adolescents. Advantages, disadvantages, and agreements between both instruments must be taking into consideration for health-related research. Introducción: el objetivo de este estudio ha sido evaluar el grado de acuerdo entre el acelerómetro ActiGraph y el diario de Bouchard para estimar el gasto energético (GE) en una población de adolescentes españoles. Métodos: 61 adolescentes españoles con edades comprendidas entre 12-16 años participaron en este estudio. El diario de Bouchard se completó durante 3 días consecutivos y se utilizó el ActiGraph durante ese tiempo. El GE obtenido del diario de Bouchard se calculó usando dos categorías de equivalentes metabólicos (DB-Bouchard y DB-Bratteby). El GE del ActiGraph se calculó mediante 3 ecuaciones de estimación (AC-Trost, AC-Freedson y ACEkelund). También se analizó a los adolescentes con datos completos de 24 h para controlar la posible pérdida de precisión. El acuerdo entre métodos se analizó mediante las correlaciones de Pearson y Concordancia, un t-test y el método de Bland-Altman. Resultados: De 37 adolescentes se obtuvieron datos completos en 72 h. Las correlaciones entre el GE calculado por el diario de Bouchard y el ActiGraph fueron altas (rango: r = 0,61-0,78). Las correlaciones de Concordancia fueron moderadas (rc = 0,60) utilizando DB-Bratteby y AC-Trost, y bajas utilizando DB-Bratteby y ACEkelund (r c = 0,15). El GE estimado por DB-Bratteby y AC-Trost tampoco mostró diferencias significativas (p > 0,05) y acuerdo completo 0,0 ± 5,0 MJ/día (intervalo de confianza al 95%: ± 0,90 MJ/día), aunque los límites de acuerdo fueron muy amplios (± 9,80 MJ/día). Las relaciones fueron mayores y las diferencias menores en la muestra que completó 72 h que en la muestra que completó 24 h. Abstract

Summary: Background: Socioeconomic status has been associated with obesity in children and adolescents. This association may be dependent according with where adolescents lives. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between different socioeconomic indicators such as parental education and occupation and socioeconomic status with abdominal obesity in adolescents from two observational studies: the Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence cross‐sectional study (HELENA‐CSS) and the Brazilian Cardiovascular Adolescent Health (BRACAH) study. Methods: European (n = 3192, aged 12.5–17.5 years, with 53.1% girls from HELENA‐CSS) and Brazilian (n = 991, aged 14–18 years, with 54.5% girls from BRACAH study) adolescents from two cross‐sectional studies were included in this analysis. Complete data on waist circumference (WC), height, socioeconomic status indicators and several confounders were collected. Socioeconomic indicators were measured using a self‐reported questionnaire in order to assess the family social status of the adolescents. Multilevel linear regression models were used to examine associations, and results were adjusted for potential confounders. Results: Adjusted results showed inverse associations between mother's and father's education levels (p < 0.001) and father's occupation level (p < 0.001) with waist‐to‐height ratio (WHtR) and WC in HELENA‐CSS girls. Similarly in European girls, socioeconomic indicators by socioeconomic status and maternal occupation level were associated with WHtR. In HELENA‐CSS boys, the same significant association was found between WHtR and WC with maternal occupation level. Moreover, in European boys WHtR was also associated with parental education. In Brazilian adolescents, both indicators of abdominal obesity did not remain associated with the independents variables, after adjustment for potential confounders. Conclusions: Abdominal obesity was associated with socioeconomic indicators in higher‐income countries, but this association was not observed in a lower‐middle‐income country. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

OBJECTIVE:To examine the association between time spent on different sedentary behaviors and consumption of certain food and beverage groups in a sample of European adolescents. DESIGN:Data from the Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence Cross-sectional Study. SETTING:Eight survey centers (Athens, Dortmund, Ghent, Lille, Rome, Stockholm, Vienna, and Zaragoza). PARTICIPANTS:A total of 2202 participants (45.5% boys) aged 12¿ to 17¿ years. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:Information on sedentary behaviors (weekdays and weekends) collected via a standardized self-reported questionnaire, including watching television, playing computer and video games, using the Internet for studying or recreation, and studying. Food and beverage consumption data of selected groups were obtained using 2 nonconsecutive 24-hour recalls. RESULTS:Boys reporting more than 4 h/d of watching television, playing computer games, and using the Internet for recreation were more likely to consume sweetened beverages (weekends) (odds ratio [OR], 1.83 [95% CI, 1.21-2.75]; 1.99 [1.31-3.01]; and 1.73 [1.03-2.91], respectively), and less likely to consume fruit (weekdays) (0.39 [0.21-0.72], 0.37 [0.18-0.77], and 0.39 [0.19-0.78], respectively) than those who spent less than 2 h/d. Girls spending more time per day watching television and playing computer or video games (weekdays) and playing computer games or surfing the Internet for recreation (weekends) were more likely to drink sweetened beverages (OR, 1.89 [95% CI, 1.21-2.94]; 1.57 [1.00-2.46]; 2.14 [1.16-3.97]; and 2.30 [1.24-4.28], respectively) and less likely to consume fruit (weekdays) (0.43 [0.23-0.80], 0.40 [0.19-0.83], 0.37 [0.14-0.94], and 0.42 [0.20-0.85], respectively) than those who spent less than 2 h/d. CONCLUSION:Increased television viewing and computer and Internet use during adolescence is associated with higher odds of consumption of sweetened beverages and lower odds of fruit consumption.

Abstract

Background: There is increasing evidence indicating that genes involved in certain metabolic processes of cardiovascular diseases may be of particular influence in people with low body weight at birth. We examined whether the apolipoprotein (APO) E, APOC3 and the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma-2 (PPAR gamma 2) polymorphisms influence the association between low birth weight and blood lipid levels in healthy adolescents aged 13-18.5 years. Methods: A cross-sectional study of 502 Spanish adolescents born at term was conducted. Total (TC) and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLc), triglycerides (TG), apolipoprotein (apo) A and B, and lipoprotein(a) [ Lp(a)] were measured. Low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLc), TC-HDLc, TC/HDLc and apoB/apoA were calculated. Results: Low birth weight was associated with higher levels of TC, LDLc, apoB, Lp(a), TC-HDLc, TC/HDLc and apoB/apoA in males with the APOE epsilon 3 epsilon 4 genotype, whereas in females, it was associated with lower HDLc and higher TG levels. In males with the APOC3 S1/S2 genotype, low birth weight was associated with lower apoA and higher Lp(a), yet this association was not observed in females. There were no associations between low birth weight and blood lipids in any of the PPAR gamma 2 genotypes. Conclusion: The results indicate that low birth weight has a deleterious influence on lipid profile particularly in adolescents with the APOE epsilon 3/epsilon 4 genotype. These findings suggest that intrauterine environment interact with the genetic background affecting the lipid profile in later life.

Abstract

Background/Objectives:Adolescents are at risk of iron deficiency because of their high iron requirements. The aims of this study were: (1) to assess iron intake, its determinants and its most important food sources and; (2) to evaluate the relation of iron intake and status in European adolescents. Subjects/Methods:Two non-consecutive 24-h recalls were completed by a computerised tool. The socio-demographic and socio-economic data were collected by a self-reported questionnaire. Weight and height were measured. A distinction was made between haem and non-haem iron.Results:The total iron intake was significantly higher among boys (13.8 mg/day; n=1077) than girls (11.0 mg/day; n=1253). About 97.3% of the boys and 87.8% of the girls met the estimated average requirement, and 72.4% of the boys and 13.7% of the girls met the recommendation for bio-available iron intake. The ratio of haem/non-haem iron intake was lower for girls than boys. Meat (19.2; 76%) and bread and rolls (12.6;3.9%) contributed most to total and haem iron intake. Bread and rolls (13.8%) and meat (10.8%) contributed most to non-haem iron intake. Age, sex and body mass index were associated with iron intake. Only red blood cell concentration was significantly negatively associated with total, haem and non-haem iron intake.Conclusion:Girls had lower iron intakes and ratio of haem/non-haem iron intake than boys. The main total iron and haem iron source was meat, while the main non-haem iron source was bread and rolls. Adolescent girls may be a group at risk for iron deficiency. Consequently, special attention and strategies are needed in order to improve iron intakes during adolescence.

Abstract

Objective: To reveal specific gene activation in nitric oxide (NO)-related inflammation we studied differential gene expression in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Methods. Total RNA was isolated from 20 biopsies of inflamed mucosa from Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) patients each as well as from six controls, labeled with 32P-dCTP and hybridized to a human NO gene array. Significant genes were analyzed for functional gene interactions and heatmaps generated by hierarchical clustering. A selection of differentially expressed genes was further evaluated with immunohistochemical staining. Results. Significant gene expression differences were found for 19 genes in CD and 23 genes in UC compared to controls, both diseases with high expression of ICAM1 and IL-8. Correlation between microarray expression and corresponding protein expression was significant (r 0.47, p 0.002). Clustering analysis together with functional gene interaction analysis revealed clusters of coregulation and coexpression in CD and UC: transcripts involved in angiogenesis, inflammatory response mediated by the transcription factor hypoxia-inducible factor 1, and tissue fibrosis. Also, a fourth cluster with transcripts regulated by the transcription factor Sp1 was found in UC. Conclusions. Expression analysis in CD and UC revealed disease-specific regulation of NO-related genes, which might be involved in perpetuating inflammatory disease activity in IBD.

Abstract

One of themost frequently appliedmethods for integrating controls on primary production through satellite data is the light use efficiency (LUE) approach, which links vegetation gross or net primary productivity (GPP or NPP) to remotely sensed estimates of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (APAR). Eddy covariance towers provide continuousmeasurements of carbon flux, presenting an opportunity for evaluation of satellite estimates of GPP. Here we investigate relationships between eddy covariance estimated GPP, environmental variables derived fromflux towers,Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) enhanced vegetation index (EVI) and GPP across African savanna ecosystems.MODIS GPP was found to underestimate GPP at themajority of sites, particularly at sites in the Sahel. EVIwas found to correlate well with estimated GPP on a site-by-site basis. Combining EVI with tower-measured PAR and evaporative fraction (EF, ameasure ofwater sufficiency) improved the direct relationship betweenGPP and EVI at themajority of the sites. The slope of this relationshipwas strongly related to site peak leaf area index (LAI). These results are promising for the extension of GPP through the use of remote sensing data to a regional or even continental scale. © 2011 Elsevier Inc.

133. Congestion road tax and physical activity

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Large-scale policy and environmental changes, such as congestion road taxes, may be a way to promote active transportation. PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine the potential effect of a congestion road tax on physical activity. METHODS: Baseline data were collected during October-November 2003, follow-up data in May 2006, and analysis was performed in September 2008. The short self-administered version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire was used to assess physical activity. Data from those with access to motorized vehicles in the Stockholm region (n=165), where the tax was in place, were compared with those from the Goteborg/Malmo regions (n=138). Within each region before and during the road tax implementation, the data were analyzed for differences in time spent at different intensity levels of physical activity, in addition to sitting, as well as for changes in reported time in overall (weighted) physical activity. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in the magnitude of the changes of the intensity levels of physical activity, weighted overall physical activity, or sitting, between Stockholm and Goteborg/Malmo. Among those exposed to the congestion road tax and with access to motorized vehicles, an increase in moderate physical activity (p=0.036); overall physical activity (p=0.015); and a reduction in time spent sitting (p=0.009) was observed. No differences were observed among those unexposed. CONCLUSIONS: The results from this study on the influence of a congestion road tax on levels of physical activity, though inconclusive, suggest that policy changes such as a congestion road tax might promote improvements in physical activity levels in individuals with motorized vehicles.

134. Recommended levels of physical activity to avoid an excess of body fat in European adolescents: the HELENA Study.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: It is unclear how much physical activity is necessary to prevent obesity during adolescence. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine whether the current physical activity guidelines for youth are associated with a lower risk of excess of body fat in European adolescents. METHODS: A sample of 2094 adolescents from the HELENA cross-sectional study was selected. Levels of moderate, vigorous, and moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) were assessed using accelerometers. BMI and percentage of body fat (skinfolds) were calculated and used to categorize the adolescents as normal-weight/normal-fat, overweight/overfat, and obese. Data were collected during 2006-2007. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, performed in 2009, was used to determine thresholds that best discriminate between weight and body fat categories. RESULTS: ROC analysis showed that >/=18 minutes/day in vigorous physical activity and >/=55 minutes/day in MVPA significantly discriminated between normal-weight and overweight+obesity categories. Moreover, >/=9 minutes/day of vigorous physical activity and >/=49 minutes/day of MVPA discriminated between normal-fat and overfat/obese adolescents. Adolescents who did not meet the current physical activity guidelines for youth of 60 minutes/day in MVPA increased the risk of having overweight+obesity (OR=1.24, 95% CI=1.01, 1.534) and overfat+obesity (OR=1.79, 95% CI=1.33, 2.42). ORs increased when adolescents did not meet the guidelines of at least 15 minutes/day in vigorous physical activity. CONCLUSIONS: Current physical activity guidelines seem to be appropriate to prevent excess of body fat in European adolescents. The aim of this study was to assess profiles of physical activity (PA) behavior using accelerometers among middle-aged and elderly women in free-living conditions. A subset of 133 women aged 56-75 years from the population-based Swedish Mammography Cohort with valid accelerometer data was included in the analysis. The proportion of women who met the PA recommendation of accumulating 30 min of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), in either one continuous bout or several shorter bouts lasting 8-10 min, on five or more days/week was 31%. The precision of mean daily estimates of MVPA and of inactivity based on 7 days monitoring was 0.80 and 0.86, respectively. On average, participants spent 103 min/day on MVPA, but only about a third of that time was accumulated in the recommended pattern of bouts lasting at least 8-10 min. Obese women had, on average, one bout of MVPA less than normal-weight women (mean 3.6 bouts/day). The mean MVPA decreased 10 min/day with every 5-year increase in age. A low proportion of women accumulated MVPA in the pattern recommended for health benefits. The proportion would increase considerably if women maintained their current amount of MVPA but increased the duration of each bout of MVPA.

Abstract

Aim of this study was to assess the validity of a short self-administered physical activity questionnaire, intended to measure past year total daily physical activity, by comparison with activity records and accelerometers. Over a 1-year period, data from a questionnaire, 7-day activity records and accelerometers were obtained from a subset of 116 women between the ages of 56 and 75 years from the population-based Swedish Mammography Cohort. We estimated concordance correlations as measure of validity, deattenuated for intraindividual variation in the reference method. Deattenuated concordance correlations comparing total daily activity measured by the questionnaire with the accelerometers and the records were 0.38 (95% CI: 0.22-0.54) and 0.64 (95% CI: 0.45-0.83), respectively. Validity of leisure-time activity (walking/bicycling and exercise) and inactivity (watching TV/reading) estimates comparing the records with the questionnaire were 0.42 (95% CI: 0.22-0.62) and 0.52 (95% CI: 0.36-0.69), respectively. These data indicate that the average past year total physical activity, leisure-time activity and inactivity can be estimated with a reasonable validity using our short self-administered questionnaire. © 2008 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

Abstract

Radiotherapy is one of the mainstays of glioblastoma (GBM) treatment. This study aims to investigate and characterise differences in protein expression patterns in brain tumour tissue following radiotherapy, in order to gain a more detailed understanding of the biological effects. Rat BT4C glioma cells were implanted into the brain of two groups of 12 BDIX-rats. One group received radiotherapy (12 Gy single fraction). Protein expression in normal and tumour brain tissue, collected at four different time points after irradiation, were analysed using surface enhanced laser desorption/ionisation - time of flight - mass spectrometry (SELDI-TOF-MS). Mass spectrometric data were analysed by principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares (PLS). Using these multivariate projection methods we detected differences between tumours and normal tissue, radiation treatment-induced changes and temporal effects. 77 peaks whose intensity significantly changed after radiotherapy were discovered. The prompt changes in the protein expression following irradiation might help elucidate biological events induced by radiation. The combination of SELDI-TOF-MS with PCA and PLS seems to be well suited for studying these changes. Abstract

Objective. Adult-type hypolactasia (AtH) can be diagnosed by genotyping in addition to functional tests or intestinal biopsy. The aims of this study were to estimate the prevalence of AtH by genotyping and to investigate whether AtH prevalence has changed in Sweden during the 20th century. Material and methods. Schoolchildren (n=690) born in 1983 and 1989, and elderly individuals (n=392) born between 1920 and 1932 were genotyped for AtH using Pyrosequencing technology. Results. The overall prevalence of AtH among children was 14.1%. The majority of children (92%, n=635) were Caucasians with genotype prevalences: CC, 61 (10%); CT, 259 (41%); TT, 307 (49%). The frequency of the mutated allele q was 0.300 in this cohort. The prevalence of AtH estimated from the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) (q 2), was 9.0% (95% CI: 6.7-11.2%). Eight percent (n=55) of the children were non-Caucasian; genotype prevalences were CC, 36 (66%); CT, 15 (27%); TT, 4 (7%). The prevalence of AtH in these children estimated from HWE was 62.5% (95% CI: 49.7-75.3%). The elderly subjects were all Caucasians. Their genotype prevalences were: CC, 20 (5%); CT, 166 (42%); TT, 206 (53%); the frequency of the mutated allele q was 0.262 and their AtH prevalence estimated from HWE was 6.8% (95% CI: 4.3-9.2%). Conclusions. The overall prevalence of AtH in children (14%) was higher than previously thought. Among Caucasians, higher figures were seen in children than in the elderly (9% versus 6.8%). The prevalence thus seems to be increasing and this may be due to the immigration of both non-Caucasian and Caucasian groups with a higher prevalence of AtH.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the association between vitamin B6, folate and vitamin B12 biomarkers and plasma fatty acids in European adolescents. A subsample from the Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence study with valid data on B-vitamins and fatty acid blood parameters, and all the other covariates used in the analyses such as BMI, Diet Quality Index, education of the mother and physical activity assessed by a questionnaire, was selected resulting in 674 cases (43 % males). B-vitamin biomarkers were measured by chromatography and immunoassay and fatty acids by enzymatic analyses. Linear mixed models elucidated the association between B-vitamins and fatty acid blood parameters (changes in fatty acid profiles according to change in 10 units of vitamin B biomarkers). DHA, EPA) and n-3 fatty acids showed positive associations with B-vitamin biomarkers, mainly with those corresponding to folate and vitamin B12. Contrarily, negative associations were found with n-6:n-3 ratio, trans-fatty acids and oleic:stearic ratio. With total homocysteine (tHcy), all the associations found with these parameters were opposite (for instance, an increase of 10 nmol/l in red blood cell folate or holotranscobalamin in females produces an increase of 15·85 µmol/l of EPA (P value <0·01), whereas an increase of 10 nmol/l of tHcy in males produces a decrease of 2·06 µmol/l of DHA (P value <0·05). Positive associations between B-vitamins and specific fatty acids might suggest underlying mechanisms between B-vitamins and CVD and it is worth the attention of public health policies.
