Abstract

Plasma-induced damage to low-k dielectric materials can be quantified by separation of the effects of charged-particle bombardment, photon bombardment, and gas-radical flux. For ion and photon bombardment, the spatial location and extent of the damage can be determined. Damage effects from radical flux will be shown to be small. Both SiCOH and photo-programmable low-k (PPLK) dielectrics will be discussed.

112. Magnapen Treatment of Infections in the Elderly

Abstract

Magnapen is a combination of two well-proven semi-synthetic penicillins which together offer the theoretical advantages of a broad spectrum of activity, good bioavailability and a low incidence of side-effects. It is of particular value in treating infections in the elderly. In this study the theory is borne out in practice in a population presenting special problems for which this combination seems particularly appropriate.Ninety-six patients have been treated with a course of Magnapen syrup. Of the total entered into the study, 73% of patients were clinically cured following therapy, with a further 19% improved. Clinical failure occurred in 8% of patients. Fifty-two patients were bacteriologically assessable, forty-seven of whom (90%) had infecting organisms cleared by therapy.Side-effects occurred in four patients (4%), one of whom had to discontinue therapy.

114. Van der Waals Complexes of 2-Chloro-, 2-Methyl-, and 1,3-Dimethylazulene with Rare Gases:  Microscopic Solvent Shifts, Structures, and Binding Energies

Abstract

The S2−S0(1La) fluorescence excitation and emission spectra of the van der Waals complexes of three azulene (Az) derivatives, 2-chloroazulene (ClAz), 2-methylazulene (MAz), and 1,3−dimethylazulene (DMAz), with the rare gases, Ar, Kr, and Xe, have been measured under jet-cooled conditions. The microscopic solvent shifts, δ&ngrmacr;, of the origin bands in the S0−S2 spectra associated with complexation of the chromophores with one and two rare gas atoms increase with increasing polarizability of the adatom(s), consistent with the dominance of dispersion in the binding. Although there are substantial variations in the relative values of δ&ngrmacr; among the Az derivatives examined, all of the δ&ngrmacr; values are relatively small and are similar to those of the 1Lb(S0−S1) transitions in the rare gas complexes of naphthalene and its methyl-substituted derivatives. The theory of microscopic solvent shifts of Jortner et al. has been used to analyze the solvent shift data. Comparisons of the sources of the oscillator strengths and van der Waals binding interactions in the azulene− and naphthalene−rare gas systems are revealing and suggest that the variations in δ&ngrmacr; with substitution pattern are primarily electronic in their origin and arise from variations in excited state configuration interactions, the magnitude of which depend on the S2−Sn energy spacings. These spacings can be varied by placing substituents either along the long axis (2-position) or parallel to the short axis( 1,3-positions) so that they selectively perturb, respectively, the long axis polarized and the short axis polarized transitions. The structures and binding energies of the complexes of these derivatives have also been modeled using Lennard-Jones type calculations and have been compared with those of Az itself. The observed progressions in the low-frequency intermolecular vibrations in each case are assigned to that excited state bending mode which is parallel to the long axis of the chromophore, in agreement with model calculations using one-dimensional Morse and Taylor's series potential functions.

117. Intergranular fracture of magnesium oxide bi-crystals

Abstract

Intergranular fracture of magnesium oxide bi-crystals of certain mis-orientations without showing macroplasticity has been observed during three-point bend tests. In the absence of large pile-ups of dislocations at the grain boundary, the cause of failure is other than that suggested by Zener, and the role of impurities and defects in the grain boundary in determining the mechanical behaviour of the crystals has been investigated. Electron probe analysis of the fracture surfaces and microscopic studies of the grain boundaries under transmitted light show the existence of a silicate phase associated with pores and cavities at the grain boundary. These seem to be the major sources of weakness as cavities evidently propagate as Griffith cracks during the deformation of the bi-crystals.

141. Charge Trapping within UV and Vacuum UV Irradiated Low-kPorous Organosilicate Dielectrics

Abstract

Vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) spectroscopy is used to determine the valence-band structure and location of defect states within the bandgap of porous organosilicate (SiCOH) dielectrics both before and after VUV and UV irradiation. SiCOH dielectrics have bandgap energies of about 9 eV. In addition, positive charge is trapped by defect states located 1 eV above the top of the SiCOH valence-band edge. These defect states can be populated or depopulated with electrons during UV and VUV irradiation, respectively. This is verified by measuring the magnitude and polarity of the trapped charge after VUV irradiation using two techniques: (i) capacitance vs voltage characteristics obtained with a mercury probe and (ii) surface-potential measurements obtained with a Kelvin probe. Both techniques show that the defect states are uncharged when occupied with electrons and positively charged when depleted of electrons.

Abstract

Many bioinformatics methods have been proposed for reducing the complexity of large gene or protein networks into relevant subnetworks or modules. Yet, how such methods compare to each other in terms of their ability to identify disease-relevant modules in different types of network remains poorly understood. We launched the ‘Disease Module Identification DREAM Challenge’, an open competition to comprehensively assess module identification methods across diverse protein–protein interaction, signaling, gene co-expression, homology and cancer-gene networks. Predicted network modules were tested for association with complex traits and diseases using a unique collection of 180 genome-wide association studies. Our robust assessment of 75 module identification methods reveals top-performing algorithms, which recover complementary trait-associated modules. We find that most of these modules correspond to core disease-relevant pathways, which often comprise therapeutic targets. This community challenge establishes biologically interpretable benchmarks, tools and guidelines for molecular network analysis to study human disease biology., In this DREAM challenge, 75 methods for the identification of disease-relevant modules from molecular networks are compared and validated with GWAS data. The authors provide practical guidelines for users and establish benchmarks for network analysis.
