The essential oil of Siparuna guianensis was obtained by hydrodistillation. The identification of the chemical compounds was performed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Antimicrobial activity was investigated for four microorganisms: Streptococcus mutans (ATCC 3440), Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 4083), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), and Candida albicans (ATCC-10231). The studies of doping and molecular dynamics were performed with the molecule that presented the highest concentration of drug-target proteins, 1IYL ( C. albicans ), 1C14 ( E. coli ), 2WE5 ( E. faecalis ), and 4TQX ( S. mutans ). The main compounds identified were: Curzerene (7.1%), γ-Elemene (7.04%), Germacrene D (7.61%), trans -β-Elemenone (11.78%), and Atractylone (18.65%). Gram positive bacteria and fungi were the most susceptible to the effects of the essential oil. The results obtained in the simulation showed that the major compound atractylone interacts with the catalytic sites of the target proteins, forming energetically favourable systems and remaining stable during the period of molecular dynamics.

Background: The use of unfractionated heparin in hypovolemic shock, aortic clamping, and visceral reperfusion is still not established, despite evidence of inhibition of early cell damage. This study investigated the potential protective effect of unfractionated heparin on hepatic and renal apoptosis in a porcine ischemia and reperfusion model., Methods: Twenty-one male swine (Sus scrofa) were divided into 3 groups: sham (n = 5), heparin (n = 8), and nonheparin (n = 8). The heparin and nonheparin groups underwent hypovolemic shock for 30 min, supraceliac aortic clamping for 1 h and reperfusion for 3 h. Unfractionated heparin 200 mg/kg was administered to the heparin group during aortic clamping. Hemodynamic and laboratory parameters were monitored, including aminotransferase and serum urea. Histological lesion scores were applied to hematoxylin and eosin-stained liver and kidney sections. Apoptosis quantification was performed by caspase-3 immunohistochemistry., Results: The proposed model caused a severe cardiocirculatory disturbance in the heparin and nonheparin groups, observed by the carotid-femoral pressure gradient and lactic acidosis. There was no significant difference in hemodynamic and laboratory parameters between these two groups. The mean values of liver and renal histological lesion scores did not present any significant differences. Caspase-3 immunoexpression was lower in the heparin than the nonheparin group for both liver and kidney., Conclusions: Attenuation of liver and kidney cell apoptosis in pigs undergoing systemic heparinization suggests a potential use for heparin in modulating cell death under critical hemodynamic conditions., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Inc. In this work, we present a methodology to identify COVID-19 spreaders using the analysis of the relationship between socio-cultural and economic characteristics with the number of infections and deaths caused by the COVID-19 virus in different countries. For this, we analyze the information of each country using the complex networks approach, specifically by analyzing the spreaders countries based on the separator set in 5-layer multiplex networks. The results show that, we obtain a classification of the countries based on their numerical values in socioeconomics, population, Gross Domestic Product (GDP), health and air connections; where, in the spreader set there are those countries that have high, medium or low values in the different characteristics; however, the aspect that all the countries belonging to the separator set share is a high value in air connections., (This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 License. Background: Obtaining representative data from the transgender population is fundamental to improving their health and well-being and advancing transgender health research. The addition of the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) gender identity measure is a promising step toward better understanding transgender health. However, methodological concerns have emerged regarding the validity of data collected from transgender participants and its effect on the accuracy of population parameters derived from those data., Objectives: The aim of the study was to provide rationale substantiating concerns with the formulation and application of the 2015 BRFSS sampling weights and address the methodological challenges that arise when using this surveillance data to study transgender population health., Methods: We examined the 2015 BRFSS methodology and used the BRFSS data to present a comparison of poor health status using two methodological approaches (a matched-subject design and the full BRFSS sample with sampling weights applied) to compare their effects on parameter estimates., Results: Measurement error engendered by BRFSS data collection procedures introduced sex/gender identity discordance and contributed to problematic sampling weights. The sex-specific "raking" algorithm used by BRFSS to calculate the sampling weights was contingent on the classification accuracy of transgender by participants. Because of the sex/gender identity discordance of 74% of the transgender women and 66% of transgender men, sampling weights may not be able to adequately remove bias. The application of sampling weights has the potential to result in inaccurate parameter estimates when evaluating factors that may influence transgender health., Discussion: Generalizations made from the weighted analysis may obscure the need for healthcare policy and clinical interventions aimed to promote health and prevent illness for transgender adults. Methods of public health surveillance and population surveys should be reviewed to help reduce systematic bias and increase the validity of data collected from transgender people.

Most chronic stress protocols are too laborious or do not abide by the two main characteristics of the stress concept: uncontrollability and unpredictability. The goal of this study was to establish a simple and reliable model of chronic stress, while maintaining the main features of the concept. Animals were exposed to chronic movement restraint with variable duration (2, 4 or 6 h, in an unpredictable schedule) for 3 weeks and assessed in several physiological and behavioral readouts known to reflect chronic stress states. Body weight, levels of plasma corticosterone, hippocampal pro-and anti-inflammatory cytokines, anxiety-like (novelty suppressed feeding and elevated plus maze) and motivated behaviors (sucrose negative contrast test and forced swim test) were evaluated three days after the end of the chronic protocol. Stressed animals had a lower body weight gain, higher levels of cytokines in the hippocampus, reduced suppression of a low concentration sucrose solution and increased immobility in the forced swim test. Based on these data, we suggest that chronic movement restraint with variable duration may be a suitable and simple protocol for the study of changes induced by chronic stress and for the testing of possible treatments relevant to psychiatry.

Background: Depressive disorders are common in children and adolescents. Antidepressants, psychotherapies, and their combination are often used in routine clinical practice; however, available evidence on the comparative efficacy and safety of these interventions is inconclusive. Therefore, we sought to compare and rank all available treatment interventions for the acute treatment of depressive disorders in children and adolescents., Methods: We did a systematic review and network meta-analysis. We searched PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science, PsycINFO, ProQuest, CINAHL, LiLACS, international trial registries, and the websites of regulatory agencies for published and unpublished randomised controlled trials from database inception until Jan 1, 2019. We included placebo-controlled and head-to-head trials of 16 antidepressants, seven psychotherapies, and five combinations of antidepressant and psychotherapy that are used for the acute treatment of children and adolescents (≤18 years old and of both sexes) with depressive disorder diagnosed according to standard operationalised criteria. Trials recruiting participants with treatment-resistant depression, bipolar disorder, psychotic depression, treatment duration of less than 4 weeks, or an overall sample size of fewer than ten patients were excluded. We extracted data following a predefined hierarchy of outcome measures, and assessed risk of bias and certainty of evidence using validated methods. Primary outcomes were efficacy (change in depressive symptoms) and acceptability (treatment discontinuation due to any cause). We estimated summary standardised mean differences (SMDs) or odds ratios (ORs) with credible intervals (CrIs) using network meta-analysis with random effects. This study was registered with PROSPERO, number CRD42015020841., Findings: From 20 366 publications, we included 71 trials (9510 participants). Depressive disorders in most studies were moderate to severe. In terms of efficacy, fluoxetine plus cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) was more effective than CBT alone (-0·78, 95% CrI -1·55 to -0·01) and psychodynamic therapy (-1·14, -2·20 to -0·08), but not more effective than fluoxetine alone (-0·22, -0·86 to 0·42). No pharmacotherapy alone was more effective than psychotherapy alone. Only fluoxetine plus CBT and fluoxetine were significantly more effective than pill placebo or psychological controls (SMDs ranged from -1·73 to -0·51); and only interpersonal therapy was more effective than all psychological controls (-1·37 to -0·66). Nortriptyline (SMDs ranged from 1·04 to 2·22) and waiting list (SMDs ranged from 0·67 to 2·08) were less effective than most active interventions. In terms of acceptability, nefazodone and fluoxetine were associated with fewer dropouts than sertraline, imipramine, and desipramine (ORs ranged from 0·17 to 0·50); imipramine was associated with more dropouts than pill placebo, desvenlafaxine, fluoxetine plus CBT, and vilazodone (2·51 to 5·06). Most of the results were rated as "low" to "very low" in terms of confidence of evidence according to Confidence In Network Meta-Analysis., Interpretation: Despite the scarcity of high-quality evidence, fluoxetine (alone or in combination with CBT) seems to be the best choice for the acute treatment of moderate-to-severe depressive disorder in children and adolescents. In order to determine whether southern Amazonian bats could harbour hantaviruses we, serologically and molecularly, screened blood, saliva, excreta and organ tissues of 47 bats captured from September to December 2015. We found that only phyllostomid bats presented antibodies against hantavirus. The seropositive bats belonged to two species of Phyllostomid bats: the greater spear-nosed bat Phyllostomus hastatus (omnivorous) and the gnome fruit-eating bat Dermanura gnoma. The overall seroprevalence was of 4.2%. Therefore, we show here that hantaviruses are circulating among phyllostomid bats in the Amazonian arc of deforestation., (© 2019 Blackwell Verlag GmbH.)

We studied the relationship between body morphometric traits, and their underlying association with milk production (MP), lactation length (LL), first calving interval (FCI) and subsequent calving interval (CI) of crossbred progeny of Murrah × Jafarabadi buffalo aiming to assist in selection programs. We carried out principal component analysis (PCA) of the body morphometric traits, which include breast width (BW), thigh width (THW), hip width (HW), rump width (RW), rump length (RL), body depth (BD), body length (BL), height withers (HEW), rear height (RH), shoulder width (SW), thorax width (TW), loin width (LW), distance from the head to ischium (DHI), and thoracic perimeter (TP). We determined the association of morphometric traits with milk/reproduction traits using canonical correlation analysis (CCA). The analysis revealed that the first six PCA accounted for 82.14% of the total observed variation, and the traits THW, HW, TW, LW, RW, HEW, TP, RH, and BW, accounted for almost half (48.00%) of the total variance indicating a higher contribution in body structural conformation. The first canonical function was significant (p<0.05), accounted for 72.46% of the total variance, and the canonical correlation was 0.56, indicating the dependence between both groups of traits. Higher canonical loadings were obtained for LL (0.49), FCI (0.46), BW (-0.71), BL (-0.56), DHI (-0.34), HEW, (-0.38) and TP (-0.50). These traits were most important for the derivation of canonical statistical variables, and presented a higher canonical correlations (r) between the dependent (LL/FCI) and independent (BW, BL, DHI, HEW and TP) groups. The results could suggest that the body morphometric traits THW, HW, TW, LW, RW, HEW, BD, TP, RH, and BW could play important role in body structural composition, indicating a suitable functional type, and aid designing of selection programs for buffalo breeding., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

We report three metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) of Planktomarina strains from coastal seawater (Portugal) to help illuminate the functions of understudied Rhodobacteraceae bacteria in marine environments. The goal of this exploratory study was to delineate health differences among transgender subpopulations (transgender women/TW, transgender men/TM, gender nonbinary/GNB adults). 2015 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data were analyzed to compare the health of three groups (TW:N = 369; TM:N = 239; GNB:N = 156). Logistic regression and adjusted odds ratios were used to determine whether health outcomes (fair/poor health, frequent physical and mental unhealthy days, chronic health conditions, and health problems/impairments) are related to group and its interaction with personal characteristics and socioeconomic position. Group was a significant predictor of fair/poor health and frequent mental unhealthy days, revealing significant health differences between the transgender groups. The odds of poor/fair health were approximately 2.5 times higher in TM and GNB adults relative to TW. The odds of frequent mental unhealthy days for TM were approximately 1.5-2 times greater than TW and GNB adults. Among those with health insurance, the odds of fair/poor health for GNB adults was more than 1.5-2 times higher that of TM and TW. Among those without health insurance, TM had over 7 times greater odds of fair/poor health than TW. This study underscores the importance of classifying and examining the health of the transgender population as unique subpopulations, as notable health differences were discovered. Background: Studies comparing the outcome of spontaneous versus assisted reproductive technologies (ART) pregnancies report heterogeneous results. Despite the success of ART to overcome infertility, concern is growing regarding both its safety and its effect on maternal and child health. The objective of this study was to compare maternal and child-health outcomes after ART relative to natural conception., Methods: A population-based birth cohort study was carried out among pregnant women expected to deliver in 2015 in Pelotas, southern Brazil. Maternal outcomes included pregnancy complications and gestational weight gain. Gestational age, weight, intrauterine growth restriction, length and head circumference, and 1-min and 5-min Apgar, as well as health problems at birth and breastfeeding were defined as offspring outcomes. Statistical analyses were performed using linear and logistic regression. G-formula was used to perform mediation analysis., Results: The study included 4252 babies born by spontaneously pregnancies and 23 babies born after ART. Adjusted analyses showed that children conceived from ART presented lower means of gestational age (p = 0.001), birth weight (p = 0.002), length (p < 0.001), and head circumference at birth (p = 0.02). However, more than 90% of the effect of ART over these outcomes was mediated by multiple pregnancy., Conclusion: Our findings suggest that the possible negative effect on the child-health outcomes is due mainly to the higher incidence of multiple pregnancies and not because of ART. The reasons for the increase in adverse pregnancy outcomes associated with ART singleton pregnancies are still uncertain and warrants further research. Further large-population studies are needed to confirm these results.

The essential oil (EO) of plants of the Myrtaceae family has diverse chemical composition and several applications. However, data on the oil yield, its composition, and its complete chemistry are still unavailable for some species belonging to this family, such as Myrcia eximia DC. In this study, the chemical compositions of the EOs of Myrcia eximia were evaluated by using gas chromatography (GC) alone and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Samples for both evaluations were collected from the city of Magalhães Barata, State of Pará, Brazil, in 2017 and 2018. For the plant material collected in 2017, EO was obtained by hydrodistillation (HD) only, while, for the material collected in 2018, EO was obtained by hydrodistillation and steam distillation (SD), in order to evaluate the differences in chemical composition and mass yield of the EO. The yields of ( E )-caryophyllene were 15.71% and 20.0% for the samples collected by HD in 2017 and 2018, respectively, while the yield was 15.0% for the sample collected by SD in 2018. Hexanal was found to be the major constituent in the EO obtained by HD, with yield of up to 26.09%. The oil yields reached 0.08% by using SD, and 0.01% and 0.36% for the samples collected in 2017 and 2018, respectively, using HD. The results of this study provide new information about the mass yield and chemical composition of Myrcia eximia DC, and they can add value and income to traditional populations, as well as facilitate the preservation of this species., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflicts of interest.

OBJECTIVE To describe social distancing practices in nine municipalities of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, stratified by gender, age, and educational attainment. METHODS Two sequential cross-sectional studies were conducted in the municipalities of Canoas, Caxias do Sul, Ijuí, Passo Fundo, Pelotas, Porto Alegre, Santa Cruz do Sul, Santa Maria, and Uruguaiana to estimate the population prevalence of COVID-19. The study was designed to be representative of the urban population of these municipalities. A questionnaire including three questions about social distancing was also administered to the participants. Here, we present descriptive analyses of social distancing practices by subgroups and use chi-square tests for comparisons. RESULTS In terms of degree of social distancing, 25.8% of the interviewees reported being essentially isolated and 41.1% reported being quite isolated. 20.1% of respondents reported staying at home all the time, while 44.5% left only for essential activities. More than half of households reported receiving no visits from non-residents. Adults aged 20 to 59 reported the least social distancing, while more than 80% of participants aged 60 years or older reported being essentially isolated or quite isolated. Women reported more stringent distancing than men. Groups with higher educational attainment reported going out for daily activities more frequently. CONCLUSIONS The extremes of age are more protected by social distancing, but some groups remain highly exposed. This can be an important limiting factor in controlling progression of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background: Previous studies demonstrated a short-term relationship between infant sleep-wake states and oral feeding performance, with state being an indication of infants' neurobehavioral readiness for feeding. However, the relationship between sleep-wake states and feeding skills has not been evaluated longitudinally during hospitalization., Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine preterm infants' sleep-wake state developmental trajectories and their associations with feeding progression during hospitalization., Methods: This descriptive and exploratory study was a secondary analysis using data from a longitudinal two-group, randomized controlled trial evaluating the effects of early and late cycled light on health and developmental outcomes among extremely preterm infants who were born ≤28 weeks of gestational age. Sleep-wake states were assessed for two 2-hour interfeeding periods per day (day and night hours), 30 weeks postmenstrual age, and every 3 weeks until discharge. Occurrences of active sleep, quiet sleep, and waking were recorded every 10 seconds. Feeding progression was assessed based on an infant's postmenstrual age at five milestones: first enteral feeding, full enteral feeding, first oral feeding, half oral feeding, and full oral feeding. Trajectory analyses were used to describe developmental changes in sleep-wake states, feeding progression patterns, and associations between feeding progression and sleep-wake trajectories., Results: Active sleep decreased while waking, and quiet sleep increased during hospitalization. Two distinct feeding groups were identified: typical and delayed feeding progression. In infants with delayed feeding progression, rates of active and quiet sleep development during the day were delayed compared to those with typical feeding progression. We also found that infants with delayed feeding progression were more likely to be awake more often during the night compared to infants with typical feeding progression., Discussions: Findings suggest that delays in sleep-wake state development may be associated with delays in feeding progression during hospitalization. Infants with delayed feeding skill development may require more environmental protection to further support their sleep development.

This study determines the natural product biosynthesis and full coding potential within the bacterial genus Aquimarina. Using comprehensive phylogenomics and functional genomics, we reveal that phylogeny instead of isolation source [host-associated (HA) vs. free-living (FL) habitats] primarily shape the inferred metabolism of Aquimarina species. These can be coherently organized into three major functional clusters, each presenting distinct natural product biosynthesis profiles suggesting that evolutionary trajectories strongly underpin their secondary metabolite repertoire and presumed bioactivities. Aquimarina spp. are highly versatile bacteria equipped to colonize HA and FL microniches, eventually displaying opportunistic behaviour, owing to their shared ability to produce multiple glycoside hydrolases from diverse families. We furthermore uncover previously underestimated, and highly complex secondary metabolism for the genus by detecting 928 biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) across all genomes, grouped in 439 BGC families, with polyketide synthases (PKSs), terpene synthases and non-ribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPSs) ranking as the most frequent BGCs encoding drug-like candidates. We demonstrate that the recently described cuniculene (trans-AT PKS) BGC is conserved among, and specific to, the here delineated A. megaterium-macrocephali-atlantica phylogenomic clade. Purpose: To estimate the effect of radiation therapy (RT) on nonbreast second malignant neoplasms (SMNs) in young women survivors of stage I-IIIA breast cancer., Methods and Materials: Women aged 20 to 44 years who received a diagnosis of stage I-IIIA breast cancer (1988-2008) were identified in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results 9 registries. Bootstrapping approach and competing-risk proportional hazards models were used to evaluate the effect of RT on nonbreast SMN risk. The analysis was repeated in racial subgroups. Radiotolerance score analysis of normal airway epithelium was performed using Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) data sets., Results: Within records of 30,003 women with primary breast cancer, 20,516 eligible patients were identified, including 2,183 African Americans (AAs) and 16,009 Caucasians. The 25-year cumulative incidences of SMN were 5.2% and 3.6% (RT vs no-RT) for AAs, with 12.8-year and 17.4-year (RT vs no-RT) median follow-up (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.81; 95% bootstrapping confidence interval [BCI], 1.02-2.50; P < .05), respectively, and 6.4% and 5.9% (RT vs no-RT) for Caucasians with 14.3-year and 18.1-year (RT vs no-RT) median follow-up (HR = 1.10; 95% BCI, 0.61-1.40; P > .05), respectively. The largest portion of excess RT-related SMN risk was lung cancer (AA: HR = 2.08, 95% BCI, 1.02-5.39, P < .05; Caucasian: HR = 1.50, 95% BCI, 0.84-5.38, P > .05). Subpopulation Treatment Effect Pattern Plot (STEPP) analysis revealed higher post-RT nonbreast SMN risk in those 20 to 44 years of age, with larger HRs for RT in AAs. Radiotolerance score (RTS) of normal airway epithelium from young AA women was significantly lower than that from young Caucasian women (P = .038)., Conclusions: With a projected 25-year follow-up, RT is associated with elevated risk of nonbreast SMNs, particularly second lung cancer, in young women survivors of stage I-IIIA breast cancer. This project aimed to develop and implement a nasal ventilation mask (NVM) guideline to reduce the incidence of airway obstruction in outpatients undergoing endoscopy procedures. An observational design was used to evaluate implementation of an NVM guideline as the oxygen delivery method for this patient population. An evidence-based guideline for NVM use was developed for patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and/or an elevated body mass index (BMI) above 35 kg/m² undergoing esophagogastroduodenoscopy and/or colonoscopy procedures at an outpatient endoscopy clinic. Patients receiving moderate or deep sedation for esophagogastroduodenoscopy, colonoscopy, or both procedures who had a BMI of at least 35 kg/m² and/or an OSA diagnosis were observed for oxygen desaturation, airway maneuvers, and use of airway adjuncts. Intraoperatively, the group of patients who wore an NVM compared with the group that did not wear an NVM had 3 times greater chance of having at least one occurrence of an oxygen saturation less than or equal to 90% and almost 4 times greater chance of having an oxygen desaturation 5% or greater of baseline oxygen saturation. Background: Objective methods to measure physical activity (PA) can lead to better cross-cultural comparisons, monitoring temporal PA trends, and measuring the effect of interventions. However, when applying this technology in field-work, the accelerometer data processing is prone to methodological issues. One of the most challenging issues relates to standardizing total wear time to provide reliable data across participants. It is generally accepted that at least 4 complete days of accelerometer wear represent a week for adults. It is not known if this same assumption holds true for pregnant women., Aim: We assessed the optimal number of days needed to obtain reliable estimates of overall PA and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) during the 2nd trimester in pregnancy using a raw triaxial wrist-worn accelerometer., Methods: Cross-sectional analyses were carried out in the antenatal wave of the 2015 Pelotas (Brazil) Birth Cohort Study. Participants wore the wrist ActiGraph wGT3X-BT accelerometer for seven consecutive days. The daily average acceleration, which indicated overall PA, was measured as milli-g (mg), and time spent in MVPA (minutes/day) was analyzed in 5-minute bouts. ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to compare variability across days of the week. Bland-Altman plots and the Spearman-Brown Prophecy Formula were applied to determine the reliability coefficient associated with one to seven days of measurement., Results: Among 2,082 pregnant women who wore the accelerometer for seven complete days, overall and MVPA were lower on Sundays compared to other days of the week. Reliability of > = 0.80 to evaluate overall PA was reached with at least three monitoring days, whereas seven days were needed to estimate reliable measures of MVPA., Conclusions: Our findings indicate that obtaining one week of accelerometry in adults is appropriate for pregnant women, particularly to obtain differences on weekend days and reliably estimate overall PA and MVPA., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

A novel and indirect voltammetric procedure for the selective determination of formaldehyde is described. It is based on the oxidation of 3,5-diacetyl-1,4-dihydrolutidine (DDL) on an unmodified glassy-carbon electrode (GCE), generated by the selective reaction between formaldehyde and acetylacetone. A single oxidation peak of DDL at +0.8 V was observed, while formaldehyde is not electroactive under this condition, showing that this reaction can be used to indirect and selective detection of formaldehyde. Under the optimized conditions, a linear response between 0.4 and 40.0 mg L -1 and a detection limit of 0.13 mg L -1 were achieved, with a relative standard deviation of 0.7% (n = 10, 10 mg L -1 ). Due to the selectivity of this reaction to formaldehyde, this method is free from interference of other aldehydes. Little is known about help-seeking for depression among Jordanian adolescents who are a vulnerable population with high rates of depressive symptoms and few mental health services. The purpose of this study was to (1) explore Jordanian adolescents' helpseeking intentions for depression and (2) examine whether depression stigma, depression severity, or their interaction are associated with Jordanian adolescents' willingness to seek help for depression and the type of treatment they would seek. In collaboration with the Jordanian Ministry of Education, we conducted a nationally representative, school-based survey of adolescents aged 12-17 years ( N = 2,349). One fourth of the adolescents reported they would not seek professional help for depression, and those respondents had higher average depression scores. Among those adolescents willing to seek help, the most likely sources included family member (57%), school counselor (46%), psychiatrist (43%), religious leader (39%), and general health practitioner (28%). Lower stigma scores were associated with greater likelihood to seek psychotherapy or visit a psychiatrist, while higher stigma scores were associated with increased likelihood to seek help from a school counselor or a family member. Jordanian adolescents experience significant barriers to seeking professional help for depression. However, even among adolescents with greater depression severity and depression stigma, school counselors were identified as a key resource for help. These findings suggest that school-based interventions may fill a critical service need for adolescents with depression and other mental health problems. School nurses should be leveraged along with counselors to address mental health issues in this vulnerable population.

This integrated literature review, framed by the gender affirmation framework, sought to contextualize the experiences of transgender adults interfacing with health care after the release of Healthy People 2020. The constructs of the gender affirmation framework represented 4 a priori themes used to organize the findings. The 23 articles synthesized (quantitative, n = 13; qualitative, n = 7; case studies, n = 2; and mixed methods, n = 1) revealed numerous obstacles accessing health care, discrimination from health care professionals and clinicians, restricted health insurance benefits for medically necessary care, and barriers to medically necessary care, such as cross-sex hormones, as well as primary and preventative health care.

The essential oils of the fresh and dry flowers, leaves, branches, and roots of Lippia thymoides were obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed using gas chromatography (GC) and GC-mass spectrometry (MS). The acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activity of the essential oil of fresh leaves was investigated on silica gel plates. The interactions of the key compounds with acetylcholinesterase were simulated by molecular docking and molecular dynamics studies. In total, 75 compounds were identified, and oxygenated monoterpenes were the dominant components of all the plant parts, ranging from 19.48% to 84.99%. In the roots, the main compounds were saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, having contents varying from 39.5% to 32.17%, respectively. In the evaluation of the anticholinesterase activity, the essential oils (detection limit (DL) = 0.1 ng/spot) were found to be about ten times less active than that of physostigmine (DL = 0.01ng/spot), whereas thymol and thymol acetate presented DL values each of 0.01 ng/spot, equivalent to that of the positive control. Based on the docking and molecular dynamics studies, thymol and thymol acetate interact with the catalytic residues Ser203 and His447 of the active site of acetylcholinesterase. The binding free energies (ΔGbind) for these ligands were -18.49 and -26.88 kcal/mol, demonstrating that the ligands are able to interact with the protein and inhibit their catalytic activity., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Tumor extracellular vesicles (EVs) mediate the communication between tumor and stromal cells mostly to the benefit of tumor progression. Notably, tumor EVs travel in the bloodstream, reach distant organs, and locally modify the microenvironment. However, visualizing these events in vivo still faces major hurdles. Here, we describe an approach for tracking circulating tumor EVs in a living organism: we combine chemical and genetically encoded probes with the zebrafish embryo as an animal model. We provide a first description of tumor EVs' hemodynamic behavior and document their intravascular arrest. We show that circulating tumor EVs are rapidly taken up by endothelial cells and blood patrolling macrophages and subsequently stored in degradative compartments. Finally, we demonstrate that tumor EVs activate macrophages and promote metastatic outgrowth. Overall, our study proves the usefulness and prospects of zebrafish embryo to track tumor EVs and dissect their role in metastatic niches formation in vivo., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc. Importance: Interventions to reduce postpartum depression have mainly focused on enhancing screening to increase treatment rates among women. Preventive approaches are timely from a population health perspective, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where access to mental health services is limited., Objective: To assess the efficacy of regular exercise during pregnancy on the prevention of postpartum depression., Design, Setting, and Participants: This randomized clinical trial examines a prespecified secondary outcome of the Physical Activity for Mothers Enrolled in Longitudinal Analysis (PAMELA) Study, a parallel-group, randomized clinical trial. This trial was nested in the 2015 Pelotas (Brazil) Birth Cohort Study. Between August 27, 2014, and March 14, 2016, pregnant women between 16 and 20 weeks of gestation with no contraindications to exercise were randomized 1:2 to the intervention group or control group via computer-generated randomization using a block size of 9. Data were analyzed from March 7 to May 2, 2018., Interventions: Participants assigned to the intervention were engaged in a 16-week supervised exercise program including aerobic and resistance training delivered in 60-minute sessions 3 times per week., Main Outcomes and Measures: Postpartum depressive symptoms were assessed with the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale 3 months after birth. A score of 12 or greater was defined as screening positive for postpartum depression. Primary analysis was performed on a complete case basis (90% of participants who had the primary end point ascertained)., Results: A total of 639 participants (mean [SD] age, 27.1 [5.1] years; mean gestational age, 16.5 [1.5] weeks) were randomly assigned to the intervention group (n = 213) or control group (n = 426). Compliance with the protocol, defined as having engaged in at least 70% of exercise sessions, was low (40.4%). There was no significant difference in mean (SD) scores for postpartum depression between the intervention group (4.8 [3.7]) and the control group (5.4 [4.1]) (mean difference, -0.6; 95% CI, -1.3 to 0.1). There was also no significant difference in rates of postpartum depression between the intervention group (12 of 192 [6.3%]) and the control group (36 of 387 [9.3%]) (odds ratio, 0.65; 95% CI, 0.33-1.28). Instrumental variable analysis indicated that noncompliance may have attenuated the effect estimates obtained in the primary analysis., Conclusions and Relevance: Moderate-intensity exercise during pregnancy did not lead to significant reductions in postpartum depression. However, noncompliance to the intervention protocol was substantial and may have led to underestimations of the possible benefits of exercise. The point estimates for this study are in the same direction as the previous randomized clinical trial on this topic. Future studies on how to promote regular exercise during pregnancy to improve compliance, particularly targeting young and less educated women, are warranted before further trials are undertaken., Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT02148965.

Current understandings of the effects trauma exposure on women's health are limited because prior research has largely focused on intimate partner and sexual violence in homogenous samples. In this descriptive study, the authors examined the relationships between lifetime trauma exposure and psychological well-being among women across the Pacific Rim. Psychological well-being differed significantly between the four locations and increased trauma exposures were related to poorer psychological well-being across and within locations. The authors report relevant findings on the relationship between trauma exposure and psychological well-being and provide evidence for future research to enhance knowledge on the effects of trauma in women's lives.

Among the cases of visceral artery aneurysms, those that involve the inferior mesenteric artery are the most uncommon, with a prevalence of <1%. This study reports a giant symptomatic inferior mesenteric artery aneurysm and its endovascular treatment by means of percutaneous embolization with the implantation of pushable coils. After complete occlusion of the aneurysm, adequate maintenance of arterial supply of the left colon and resolution of the symptoms were observed. In the 2-year follow-up, a significant reduction in the aneurysm's volume and maintenance of the clinical condition were observed.

Octocorals (Cnidaria, Anthozoa Octocorallia) are magnificent repositories of natural products with fascinating and unusual chemical structures and bioactivities of interest to medicine and biotechnology. However, mechanistic understanding of the contribution of microbial symbionts to the chemical diversity of octocorals is yet to be achieved. This review inventories the natural products so-far described for octocoral-derived bacteria and fungi, uncovering a true chemical arsenal of terpenes, steroids, alkaloids, and polyketides with antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antifouling, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and antimalarial activities of enormous potential for blue growth. Genome mining of 15 bacterial associates (spanning 12 genera) cultivated from Eunicella spp. resulted in the identification of 440 putative and classifiable secondary metabolite biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs), encompassing varied terpene-, polyketide-, bacteriocin-, and nonribosomal peptide-synthase BGCs. This points towards a widespread yet uncharted capacity of octocoral-associated bacteria to synthetize a broad range of natural products. However, to extend our knowledge and foster the near-future laboratory production of bioactive compounds from (cultivatable and currently uncultivatable) octocoral symbionts, optimal blending between targeted metagenomics, DNA recombinant technologies, improved symbiont cultivation, functional genomics, and analytical chemistry are required. Such a multidisciplinary undertaking is key to achieving a sustainable response to the urgent industrial demand for novel drugs and enzyme varieties.

Background: The oil and extracts of Lippia thymoides have been used for various medicinal and food applications. Entrepreneurs in the Amazon have been considering the economic exploitation of this plant. The present study evaluated the influence of the seasonal and circadian rhythm on the yield and composition of the essential oil of leaves and thin branches of a Lippia thymoides specimen cultivated in Abaetetuba, State of Pará, Brazil. The constituents of the oils were identified by GC and GC-MS and with the application of multivariate analysis: Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA)., Results: The predominance of oxygenated monoterpenes (70.6-91.8%) was observed in oils, followed by monoterpene hydrocarbons (1.2 to 21.6%) and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (3.9 to 9.1%). Thymol, thymol acetate, γ-terpinene, p-cymene, and (E)-caryophyllene were the first compounds. The mean thymol content was higher in the rainy season (seasonal: 77.0%; circadian: 74.25%) than in the dry period (seasonal: 69.9%; circadian: 64.5%), and it was influenced by climatic variables: rainfall precipitation, solar radiation, temperature, and relative humidity. For the circadian study, PCA and HCA analysis were applied to the constituents of oils from rainy and dry periods. Two groups were formed. A higher thymol content characterized the group 1, followed by (Z)-hexen-3-ol, α-thujene, α-pinene, α-phellandrene and humulene epoxide II, in minor percent. A higher content of p-cymene formed the group 2, γ-terpinene, thymol acetate and (E)-caryophyllene, followed by myrcene, α-terpinene, 1,8-cineole, terpinen-4-ol, methylthymol, and germacrene D, in a low percentage., Conclusions: The different chemical profiles found in the oils of L. thymoides must be associated with the environmental conditions existing at its collection site. The knowledge of this variation in the oil composition is essential from the ecological and taxonomic point of view, regarding the management and economic use of the species.

Title: Provision of guideline-based care for drug-resistant tuberculosis in South Africa: Level of concordance between prescribing practices and guidelines., Objective: We examined the influence of individual and site characteristics on the concordance between prescribed treatment regimens and recommended standardized regimen according to national guidelines for patients with drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) in South Africa., Methods: Participants were 337 youth and adults treated for DR-TB between November 2014 and August 2016 at ten DR-TB treatment sites in Eastern Cape and KwaZulu Natal provinces, South Africa. Logistic regression was used to determine individual and system characteristics related to concordance at treatment initiation between the prescribed treatment regimens in terms of medication composition, dosage, and frequency and guideline-based standardized regimen that included four oral and one injectable medications., Results: The sample was 19% (n = 64) youth (15-24 years), 53% (n = 179) male, 73% (n = 243) HIV coinfected, and 51% (n = 169) with prior history of TB treatment. Guideline medications were correctly prescribed for 88% (n = 295) of patients, but only 33% (n = 103) received the correct medications and doses. Complete guideline adherence to medications, doses, and frequency was achieved for 30% (n = 95) of patients. Younger age, HIV coinfection, and rural treatment setting were associated with the prescription of correct medications., Conclusion: Most individuals are prescribed the correct DR-TB medications, yet few individuals receive correct medications, dosages, and frequencies. Purpose: Research has documented that holding certain etiological beliefs about depression can determine the level of stigma experienced by individuals with depression. To date, no studies have yet examined this relationship among adolescents. Using a sample of Arab adolescents, the purpose of this study was to describe adolescents' beliefs about the etiology of depression, and examine whether these beliefs influence the type and severity of depression stigma., Methods: A nationwide school survey was conducted in a representative sample of Jordanian public and private schools located in Jordan, a Middle-Eastern Arab country. A total of 2,349 adolescents aged 12-17 (59% female) completed and returned an anonymous survey that included measures on adolescents' sociodemographic and health characteristics, depression symptoms, depression stigma, and depression etiological beliefs. An exploratory factor analysis with principal components analysis (PCA) was used to examine the factor structure of the Depression Etiological Beliefs Scale. The stability of the PCA findings was tested using a cross-validation method. Regression analyses were performed to examine whether depression etiological beliefs, depression severity, or their interaction are associated with depression stigma., Results: Adolescents endorsed multiple etiological beliefs about depression. The beliefs in which likely or very likely was most often reported were stressful events in one's life (72%), social factors (65%), and one's weak will (56%). On the other hand, the least reported beliefs were genetic or inherited problems (24%), chemical imbalance (30%), and punishment for wrong doings (35%). The interaction between adolescents' depression severity and depression beliefs significantly predicted personal stigma. Adolescent sex, age, and region of residence significantly affected the relationship between depression beliefs and stigma., Conclusions: Nurses need to consider the beliefs and attitudes their patients have around depression, as these can influence symptom severity, comprehensive treatment plans, and adherence to provider recommendations. Objective methods to measure physical activity (PA) have become available and widely used given the high degree of precision to evaluate PA. However, few studies have used accelerometers to measure PA during pregnancy, especially in low- and middle-income countries. We assessed overall PA, moderate, vigorous, and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) objectively measured among pregnant women and their correlates in a population-based study. PA was assessed for seven consecutive days using a raw triaxial wrist-worn accelerometer in women interviewed around 16 and 24 weeks of gestation in the 2015 Pelotas (Brazil) Birth Cohort Study. The average acceleration, which expresses overall PA, was presented in milli-g (1 mg = 0.001 g), and average time (min/day) spent in MVPA (>100 mg) was also analyzed in 5- and 10-min bouts. Analyses were performed using linear regression. In total, 2317 women were included in the analyses. Overall PA was 27.6 mg. Pregnant women spent on average 14 min/day in MVPA and 0.4 min in vigorous PA. Time spent in MVPA and total PA were inversely associated with years in school and income, and were lower among women receiving advice to not exercise. MVPA was also inversely associated with age, lower among women living with a partner, and higher among non-white women. The study indicated low levels of PA among pregnant women. Background: Infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) are responsible for high rates of rupture-associated morbidity and mortality and can be treated by open or endovascular surgery., Objectives: To analyze risk factors and survival associated with surgical and endovascular AAA treatment methods., Methods: A retrospective, longitudinal study involving 41 patients who underwent endovascular or open AAA repair, whether elective or emergency, over a 48-month period, with analysis of preoperative comorbidities, 30-day and 1-year survival, in-hospital mortality, length of hospital stay, transfusion of blood products, duration of surgery, and development of acute kidney failure. Inferential statistics and survival analysis considered a 95% CI and p < 0.05 as significant., Results: Twelve of the 41 patients were treated with open surgery and 29 with endovascular techniques. The majority were male (75%), with an average age of 71 (range: 56 - 90 years). There were no differences in demographic or risk factors between the groups. Overall survival rates for open and endovascular repair were different for both 30 days (37 vs. 72%, p = 0.01) and 360 days (37 vs. 67%, p = 0.01). However, survival rates in elective cases were similar at 30 days (71 vs. 76%, p = 0.44) and 360 days (both 71%, p = 0.34). Endovascular repair showed shorter length of hospital stay (3.0 vs. 4.4 days; p = 0.02) and duration of surgery (111 vs. 163 min; p < 0.01) compared to open repair., Conclusions: There was no difference in short- or medium-term survival of AAA patients treated electively with endovascular or open surgery. The aim of this study was to investigate possible correlations between aerobic and anaerobic fitness (in field tests) with performance during a 90 min friendly match, through the following variables: total distance covered, maximal running speed, number of high-intensity actions and number of sprints. Eighteen professional soccer players from a Brazilian elite team (age 23 ± 3 years, body mass 77.5 ± 8.9 kg) participated in the study. The athletes performed a Yo-Yo Endurance Test (aerobic fitness) and a Running Anaerobic Sprint Test (six maximal 35 m efforts separated by 10 s of passive recovery, anaerobic fitness). Data were collected during friendly matches using a GPS with 5 Hz technology. To establish the correlation between the variables determined during the matches, the Pearson correlation coefficient was used (significance level of p ≤ 0.05). A high correlation was found between distance covered in the Yo-Yo endurance test and total distance covered (r = 0.72; p < 0.05), number of high-intensity actions (r = 0.78; p < 0.05) and number of sprints (r = 0.88; p < 0.01) in the soccer matches. The RAST variables did not relate to the standards set during the matches (p < 0.05). From the results of the present study, it may be concluded that there is no correlation between RAST and friendly match data variables. However, better results in the Yo-Yo endurance test correlate with total distance, number of high-intensity actions and sprints during matches.

Patients with juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus (JSLE) usually have an increase in fat mass and decrease in lean body mass. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of a nutritional intervention on changes in body composition and food consumption of adolescents with JSLE compared with a control group and its variation over time and to assess the association of total fat mass with clinical parameters. This randomized controlled study evaluated 31 girls. Body composition and food intake were evaluated at baseline. The patients were randomly allocated into a nutritional intervention group and a control group. The intervention group received monthly nutritional guidelines for 9 months. After this period, evaluations were repeated. The carbohydrates intake decreased in the intervention group compared with the control group (p = 0.031) at the end of the study period. Additionally, a significant decrease was observed in the intake of energy (p = 0.023), carbohydrates (p = 0.031), protein (p = 0.024), total fat (p = 0.027), saturated fat (p = 0.012), and trans fat (p = 0.029) in the intervention group between baseline and the end of the study. There was an average increase of 3.7 kg (95% CI 0.8-6.5) in the total fat mass (p = 0.013) and 0.36 kg/m 2 (95% CI 0.10-0.62) in the appendicular fat mass (p = 0.007) in the control group during the study period; this finding was not observed in the intervention group. A 9-month nutritional intervention in JSLE patients improved their eating habits and protected against the excessive gain of weight and body fat.

Aim: To microscopically examine the cleanliness of root canal walls that remained unprepared as revealed by micro-CT., Methodology: The root canals of 10 freshly extracted mandibular premolars with necrotic pulps and apical periodontitis along with the mesiobuccal canals of 11 mandibular molars with vital pulps were prepared using Reciproc instruments R40 and R25, respectively, and 2.5% sodium hypochlorite irrigation. Specimens were scanned in micro-CT before and after preparation, and the unprepared areas were identified. The outer root surface corresponding to the untouched areas was marked on each root third to guide further analysis using histological (for teeth with vital pulps) and scanning electron microscopic (SEM; for necrotic teeth) examination. In the teeth with vital pulps, the root canal area occupied by tissue remnants was calculated. In SEM analysis of teeth with necrotic pulps, scores were attributed for the amount of debris on the untouched areas., Results: The proportion of unprepared areas in the mesiobuccal molar canals was 18.1% and 9.6% over the full canal length and apical canal, respectively. In premolars, corresponding figures were 34.6% and 17.6%, respectively. Histological analysis of canals with vital pulps revealed tissue remnants over the untouched walls almost exclusively in the apical canal. SEM analysis of the canals with necrotic pulps revealed debris along the untouched walls in all root canal thirds., Conclusion: The areas that remain untouched by Reciproc instruments used with 2.5% NaOCl irrigation as revealed by micro-CT analysis were usually covered with debris, in the form of pulp tissue remnants, bacteria and dentine chips, especially in the apical root canal., (© 2017 International Endodontic Journal. This study examined the extent to which different high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and sprint interval training (SIT) protocols could influence psychophysiological responses in moderately active young men. Fourteen participants completed, in a randomized order, three cycling protocols (SIT: 4 × 30-second all-out sprints; Tabata: 7 × 20 seconds at 170% ⋮O 2max ; and HIIT: 10 × 60 seconds at 90% HR max ) and three running HIIT protocols (4 × 4 minutes at 90%-95% HR max , 5 × at v⋮O 2max , and 4 × 1,000 meters at a rating of perceived exertion (RPE) of 8, from the OMNI-Walk/Run scale). Oxygen uptake (⋮O 2 ), heart rate, and RPE were recorded during each interval. Affective responses were assessed before and after each trial. The Tabata protocol elicited the highest ⋮O 2 and RPE responses, and the least pleasant session-affect among the cycling trials. The v⋮O 2max elicited the highest ⋮O 2 and RPE responses and the lowest mean session-affect among the running trials. Findings highlight the limited application of SIT and some HIIT protocols to individuals with low fitness levels.

Background: The lack of research regarding the current profile of adolescent depression in the Arab countries in general, and Jordan in particular, makes it difficult to design, implement, and disseminate effective interventions to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adolescent depression in the region. The purpose of this study was to estimate a national prevalence of depressive symptoms among adolescents in Jordan, and to identify characteristics associated with severity of depression., Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional, nationally representative school survey was utilized. A total of 2,349 Jordanian adolescents aged 12-17 completed and returned the survey packets, which included the Beck Depression Inventory-II and measures of sociodemographics and health history. Participants represented all three regions in the country, with 34% from the northern (suburban) region, 43% from the central (urban) region, and 23% from the southern (rural) region., Results: The majority of the adolescents were females (59%) and 15-17 years old (67%). Almost 14% reported having at least one chronic health problem, 15% reported having a mental health problem, 25% reported having academic difficulties, 8% reported that they had received a psychiatric diagnosis, and 22% reported that they had sought psychological help at some point in the past. The mean total depression score was 16.3 (SD = 11.2, 95% CI = 15.8-16.7), with 34% of the sample reporting moderate to severe depression. Depression was significantly higher among respondents who were female, ages 14-15 years, and living in families with low monthly incomes; and who reported having a chronic health problem, mental health problem, learning difficulty, a psychiatric diagnosis and/or seeking previous psychological help., Conclusions: Our findings should serve as an alarm, particularly given that rates of depression in the Arab countries are expected to increase rapidly in the context of the Arab Spring. Context: A significant contribution to the success of lung transplantation is the recipient's ability to self-manage a multidrug regimen and follow complex instructions. Effective education has always been an integral component of the process of preparing patients to care for themselves post lung transplant. Impaired cognition, anxiety, and psychological distress, however, can decrease the retention of posttransplant care information provided during education sessions., Objective: This quality improvement project evaluated whether a multimedia education method compared to standard education method improves posttransplant care knowledge, anxiety, and satisfaction with the education experience in lung transplant patients and their caregivers., Methods: Two education methods groups, comprised of transplant patients and their primary caregivers, were compared: (1) historic control group who received the standard education (n = 19 dyads) and (2) multimedia group who received the new multimedia education (n = 18 dyads). Knowledge of posttransplant care was evaluated in both groups before and after receiving the education. A satisfaction survey was administered at the end of the education program., Results: A significantly higher percentage of patients receiving the multimedia method reported gains in posttransplant care knowledge ( P = .05), less anxiety about the transplant surgery ( P = .02), and satisfaction with the education method ( P = .02) when compared to those receiving the standard method. Caregivers and transplant team member also indicated that the multimedia method was more effective than the standard method., Conclusion: Multimedia methods decrease anxiety and increase satisfaction with the education experience when preparing patients for lung transplantation.

Background Sclerotherapy has been gaining increased acceptance and popularity as an effective therapy for the treatment of varicose veins. This attention has fed growing interest into the safety and potential complications of this procedure. There is no evidence of pulmonary complications from foam sclerotherapy in humans; however, animal studies have shown possible damage. The aim of this study is to show the changes in rat pulmonary parenchyma after the injection of 1% polidocanol Tessari foam into the peripheral vein using histological analysis of the inflammatory and fibrosis processes. Methods Twenty-four Wistar rats were divided into the following four groups: 24 h polidocanol, seven-day polidocanol, 28-day polidocanol, and control group. After the foam was injected into the lateral saphenous vein, the lungs of the rats were removed for histological analysis. Results Alveolar edema was observed in only the 24 h group (P < 0.005). Vessel thickening was observed in the seven-and 28-day groups (P < 0.001). Interstitial fibrosis was found in only the 28-day group (P = 0.006). There was no evidence of venous or arterial thrombosis in either group. Conclusion Polidocanol Tessari foam injection into rat peripheral veins causes alveolar edema, vessel thickening, and interstitial fibrosis.

The influence of gender and other individual and context characteristics on the prevalence and severity of depressive symptoms among Jordanian adolescents remains unclear. The aims of the current study were to: (a) characterize depressive symptoms profiles for Jordanian adolescents; and (b) examine gender differences in the type, severity, and correlates of depressive symptoms. Cross-sectional data were collected from 2,349 Jordanian adolescents ages 12 to 17 using a nationally representative school survey. The Beck Depression Inventory-II was used to assess the presence and severity of depressive symptoms. Female adolescents had significantly higher mean depression scores (17.9 [SD = 11.6], 95% confidence interval [CI] [17.3, 18.5]) than their male counterparts (13.8 [SD = 10.2], 95% CI [13.2, 14.5]). Approximately 41% of girls and 26% of boys reported scores indicating moderate to severe depression. Sex differences and socially constructed gender differences need to be adequately considered in the planning and delivery of mental health care for adolescent depression. If the risk for depression is gender-specific, prevention strategies cannot be gender-neutral. Purpose/background: Strength asymmetries are related to knee injuries in intermittent sports players. The purpose of this study was to examine whether elite futsal players demonstrate strength asymmetries during knee isokinetic testing applying the Croisier et al.21 criteria., Methods: Forty male elite (27.9 ± 6.5 years) Brazilian futsal players participated in the study. The testing protocol required players to perform concentric contractions of both quadriceps and hamstring muscles at angular velocities of 60 °·s -1 and 240 °·s -1 and eccentric contractions of hamstring at 30 °·s -1 and 120 °·s -1 . Conventional (concentric:concentric) and mixed (eccentric:concentric) hamstrings/quadriceps (H/Q) ratios were calculated. Subjects were determined to have an imbalanced strength profile if an athlete had at least two parameters that were asymmetrical across speeds and conditions. Asymmetry was operationally defined as peak torque asymmetry greater than 15% in bilateral comparison, and H/Q ratio less than 0.47 for conventional and 0.80 for mixed conditions., Results: Significant differences were observed between preferred and nonpreferred limbs in the concentric contractions of flexors at 240 °·s -1 and eccentric contractions of extensors and flexors at 30 °·s -1 and 120 °·s -1 . However, these asymmetries did not exceed 15%. The conventional and mixed H/Q ratios were greater in the preferred than in nonpreferred limbs, but only the mixed hamstrings ecc /quadriceps conc in the nonpreferred limbs showed values lower than recommended (<0.80). In addition, 50% of elite futsal players had preseason strength imbalances per the developed criteria., Conclusion: The studied elite futsal players had preseason strength imbalances, which may increase the risk of hamstring injuries., Level of Evidence: 3.

Introduction: In general, in obese people a state of hyperleptinemia may impair both energy balance and the inflammatory process. However, it has not been fully investigated whether there is a relationship between hyperleptinemia and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and resting energy expenditure (REE), in obese women., Methods: 83 obese women were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Anthropometric measures, body composition, REE, CRF and serum concentration of leptin were measured. Pearson's correlation coefficient was performed to examine the relationship between circulating leptin level and other clinical variables. Multiple regression analysis was applied to determine predictors of REE and CRF. Effects were considered significant at p≤0.05., Results: The most important finding in the present study is that the hyperleptinemia state was inversely correlated with CRF (r=-0.382, p=0.001) and REE (r=-0.447, p<0.001). Moreover, a positive correlation with fat mass was confirmed (r=0.419, p<0.001). In addition, hyperleptinemia was an independent negative predictor of REE (r 2 =-2.649, p=0.010) and CRF (r 2 =-2.335, p=0.023)., Conclusion: Together our results may suggest a vicious cycle between the state of hyperleptinemia and a decrease in energy expenditure and cardiorespiratory fitness in obese women, which can impair whole body energy homeostasis. This work showed a flow system designed with solenoid valves for preconcentration of fluoride using SPADNS method in water samples. The analyte was preconcentrated in a mini-column coated with Layered Double Hydroxides (LDH) used as adsorbent. Then, the fluoride ions were eluted with 0.5molL -1 sodium hydroxide and determined by spectrophotometry. The variables that affect the system such adsorbent mass, type of eluent, solutions flow rate, reagent concentration and pH effect were critically evaluated. Under optimized conditions, the detection limit, coefficient of variation, linear range and preconcentration factor were estimated at 15µgL -1 (99.7% confidence level), 0.8% (500µgL -1 , n = 10), 50-500µgL -1 and 10, respectively. The accuracy of the method was evaluated by analysis of ALPHA APS 1076 (Simulated Rain Water) certified material, the values were not significantly different at a 95% level of confidence. Introduction: The goal of this paper is to present a critical review on the main systems that use artificial intelligence to identify groups at risk for osteoporosis or fractures. The systems considered for this study were those that fulfilled the following requirements: range of coverage in diagnosis, low cost and capability to identify more significant somatic factors., Methods: A bibliographic research was done in the databases, PubMed, IEEExplorer Latin American and Caribbean Center on Health Sciences Information (LILACS), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Scopus, Web of Science, and Science Direct searching the terms "Neural Network", "Osteoporosis Machine Learning" and "Osteoporosis Neural Network". Studies with titles not directly related to the research topic and older data that reported repeated strategies were excluded. The search was carried out with the descriptors in German, Spanish, French, Italian, Mandarin, Portuguese and English; but only studies written in English were found to meet the established criteria. Articles covering the period 2000-2017 were selected; however, articles prior to this period with great relevance were included in this study., Discussion: Based on the collected research, it was identified that there are several methods in the use of artificial intelligence to help the screening of risk groups of osteoporosis or fractures. However, such systems were limited to a specific ethnic group, gender or age. For future research, new challenges are presented., Conclusions: It is necessary to develop research with the unification of different databases and grouping of the various attributes and clinical factors, in order to reach a greater comprehensiveness in the identification of risk groups of osteoporosis. For this purpose, the use of any predictive tool should be performed in different populations with greater participation of male patients and inclusion of a larger age range for the ones involved. The biggest challenge is to deal with all the data complexity generated by this unification, developing evidence-based standards for the evaluation of the most significant risk factors.
