Three small South American genera of Apocynaceae-Asclepiadoideae are included in a phylogeny of South American Apocynaceae-Asclepiadoideae using the trnT – L and trnL – F intergenic spacers and the trnL and rps16 introns. Two genera, Widgrenia and Rhyssostelma , are nested in the large genus Oxypetalum . One, Stenomeria , is congeneric with Tassadia . The correspondent and necessary new combinations, Oxypetalum nigricans and O. corymbosum , and Tassadia decalepis, T. fosteri and T. pentalepis are made. The new combination Tassadia guanchezii is proposed for a hitherto insufficiently known species of white sand savannas of Colombia and Venezuela. Lorostelma struthianthus , a synonym of Tassadia decalepis , is lectotypified. This manuscript proposes taxonomic changes that reflect advances in Oxypetalinae and Tassadiinae, and it emends the description of Tassadia guanchezii .

Two distinctive new species of Sabicea (Rubiaceae) from the Lower Guinea region are described and illustrated. Sabicea bullata is easily recognized by its cordate leaves, which are strongly bullate above, and its sessile glomerulate inflorescences. It is restricted to the Rumpi Hills and Bakossi Mountains, in southwestern Cameroon. Sabicea urniformis, from southern Gabon and Congo-Brazzaville, is remarkable in having discolorous leaves and an urn-shaped involucre with bracts shortly connate at the base. Detailed descriptions and botanical drawings are provided, conservation status assessed and taxonomic affinities discussed.

In many cases phylogenetic studies based on molecular data have led to changes in the classification of the Asclepiadoideae, but in others they have corroborated relationships previously inferred from morphological data. This study combines results of molecular analysis and morphology to provide a new subtribal classification for the New World genera Gonioanthela, Jobinia, Macroditassa, Peplonia and Orthosia. Pickard (1955) described Sarcostemma viminale as "the most miserable and uninteresting succulent". Quite to the contrary, we have been intrigued by the variability within this seemingly so uniform group in our long-term work on the genus Sarcostemma R. Br. (Liede & Meve 1989, 1992, 1993, 1995, Meve 1994, Meve & Liede 1996). After a thorough study on Sarcostemma in Madagascar (Liede & Meve 1995), based on ample herbarium specimens and a comprehensive living collection, our surprise was complete when one of the Sarcostemma accessions in the greenhouse of the Botanical Garden, Mfinster, produced flowers unknown to us. This species, originating from the northernmost corner of Madagascar, cannot be matched with any of the Madagascan taxa or other species described in the genus. A notice to other Sarcostemma enthusiasts produced only one more specimen of the new species. Amazingly, material collected by Humbert in 1959 is still in cultivation and has flowered freely for many years (pers. comm. M. Teissier, Jardin Botanique "Les Cedres", France). The long neglect of this pretty species has probably been influenced by Humbert's original labelling as "Euphorbia" (pers. comm. M. Teissier).
