Abstract

The preparation, crystallization and solid-state characterization of a benzyl-substituted spirobiphenalenyl radical are reported. The crystal structure shows that the radical is monomeric in the solid state, with the molecules packed in an unusual one-dimensional fashion.

Abstract

The Extended Huckel Theory (EHT) calculations of the band electronic structure of substituted pentacene derivatives and the polymorphs of the parent compound are presented. An analysis on these calculations reveals that there are wide disparities among the bandwidth and electronic dimensionalities of these compounds.

Abstract

The cubic perovskite ScF exhibits pronounced isotropic negative thermal expansion and a structural quantum phase transition. We present measurements of the thermal expansion from 200 K to about 1.6 K. We find evidence for stress effects at both high and low temperatures. The coefficient of volumetric thermal expansion and the Grüneisen parameter exhibit power-law temperature dependences above 12 K. The Grüneisen parameter changes sign near 2.4 K and reaches by 1.6 K. Our results are consistent with predictions of Grüneisen divergence on the ordered side of a quantum critical point. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Here, we report the discovery of superconductivity in a new transition metal-chalcogenide compound, i.e. Nb2Pd0.81S5, with a transition temperature Tc is approximately equal to 6.6 K. Despite its relatively low Tc, it displays remarkably high and anisotropic superconducting upper critical fields, e.g. μ0Hc2 (T → 0 K)37 T for fields applied along the crystallographic b-axis. For a field applied perpendicularly to the b-axis, μ0Hc2 shows a linear dependence in temperature which coupled to a temperature-dependent anisotropy of the upper critical fields, suggests that Nb2Pd0.81S5 is a multi-band superconductor. This is consistent with band structure calculations which reveal nearly cylindrical and quasi-one-dimensional Fermi surface sheets having hole and electron character, respectively. The static spin susceptibility as calculated through the random phase approximation, reveals strong peaks suggesting proximity to a magnetic state and therefore the possibility of unconventional superconductivity.

Abstract

Itinerant and local moment magnetism have substantively different origins, and require distinct theoretical treatment. A unified theory of magnetism has long been sought after, and remains elusive, mainly due to the limited number of known itinerant magnetic systems. In the case of the two such examples discovered several decades ago, the itinerant ferromagnets ZrZn_2 and Sc_3In, the understanding of their magnetic ground states draws on the existence of 3d electrons subject to strong spin fluctuations. Similarly, in Cr, an elemental itinerant antiferromagnet (IAFM) with a spin density wave (SDW) ground state, its 3d character has been deemed crucial to it being magnetic. Here we report the discovery of the first IAFM compound with no magnetic constituents, TiAu. Antiferromagnetic order occurs below a Neel temperature T_N ~ 36 K, about an order of magnitude smaller than in Cr, rendering the spin fluctuations in TiAu more important at low temperatures. This new IAFM challenges the currently limited understanding of weak itinerant antiferromagnetism, while providing long sought-after insights into the effects of spin fluctuations in itinerant electron systems.

Abstract

We investigate the relationships among magnetic, dielectric, and ferroelectric properties of a frustrated spin system MnWO4, which undergoes several magnetic phase transitions including a commensurate-incommensurate and a collinear-noncollinear transition. Dielectric and pyroelectric measurements show that the transition into a spiral magnetic ordered phase produces a ferroelectric state. The direction of the electric polarization is perpendicular to the spin rotation axis and the propagation vector of the spiral. These observations agree well with recent theoretical predictions that a cycloidal spiral magnetic ordering can result in electric polarization. In a material where ferroelectricity is induced by magnetic order, we can magnetically tune the ferroelectric transitions by exploiting the difference of the net magnetization between the ferroelectric and neighboring paraelectric phases

Abstract

The intermetallic compound yttrium-palladium-boron-carbon is superconductive at 23 degrees Kelvin and has the highest transition temperature (TcS) ever recorded, while the TcS for LuNi2B2C is 16.6 degrees Kelvin. The third transition metal, nickel, and the layer crystal structure contribute to the TcS of LuNi2B2C. Research on optimum chemical and physical characteristics in an ideal superconductor is currently under way.

Abstract

An azide derivative (Ti(NMe2)(N3)(u-NMe2))3(u3-N3)(mu3-NH) was synthesized and characterized. A reaction of azidotrimethylsilane and Ti(NMe2)4 resulted a replacement of diethylamide with azide. The product which was suggested to be an oligomer displayed strong absorption indicative of the presence of azide ligands and weak absorption attributed to the NH groups. The compound had terminal and triply bonding modes for the azides.

Abstract

The isolation andd characterization of (Et3P)4Fe4Te4 (1) and the synthesis of a mixture of beta- and epsilon-FeTe (2a,2b) are dicussed. It is observed that Fe(COT) reacts rapidly with Et3PTe to yield (1). Structural analysis of (1) shows Fe-Te bonding and suggests Fe-FE bonding as well. Heating (1) releases the phosphine and polymerizes the Fe4Te4 unit to produce polycrystalline iron tellurides. X-ray diffraction characterization on the telluride reveals the presence of both 2a and 2b.
