101. The Hijackers Guide To The Galaxy: Off-Path Taking Over Internet Resources

Abstract

Internet resources form the basic fabric of the digital society. They provide the fundamental platform for digital services and assets, e.g., for critical infrastructures, financial services, government. Whoever controls that fabric effectively controls the digital society. In this work we demonstrate that the current practices of Internet resources management, of IP addresses, domains, certificates and virtual platforms are insecure. Over long periods of time adversaries can maintain control over Internet resources which they do not own and perform stealthy manipulations, leading to devastating attacks. We show that network adversaries can take over and manipulate at least 68% of the assigned IPv4 address space as well as 31% of the top Alexa domains. We demonstrate such attacks by hijacking the accounts associated with the digital resources. For hijacking the accounts we launch off-path DNS cache poisoning attacks, to redirect the password recovery link to the adversarial hosts. We then demonstrate that the adversaries can manipulate the resources associated with these accounts. We find all the tested providers vulnerable to our attacks. We recommend mitigations for blocking the attacks that we present in this work. Nevertheless, the countermeasures cannot solve the fundamental problem - the management of the Internet resources should be revised to ensure that applying transactions cannot be done so easily and stealthily as is currently possible.

102. Injection Attacks Reloaded: Tunnelling Malicious Payloads over DNS

Abstract

The traditional design principle for Internet protocols indicates: "Be strict when sending and tolerant when receiving" [RFC1958], and DNS is no exception to this. The transparency of DNS in handling the DNS records, also standardised specifically for DNS [RFC3597], is one of the key features that made it such a popular platform facilitating a constantly increasing number of new applications. An application simply creates a new DNS record and can instantly start distributing it over DNS without requiring any changes to the DNS servers and platforms. Our Internet wide study confirms that more than 1.3M (96% of tested) open DNS resolvers are standard compliant and treat DNS records transparently. In this work we show that this `transparency' introduces a severe vulnerability in the Internet: we demonstrate a new method to launch string injection attacks by encoding malicious payloads into DNS records. We show how to weaponise such DNS records to attack popular applications. For instance, we apply string injection to launch a new type of DNS cache poisoning attack, which we evaluated against a population of open resolvers and found 105K to be vulnerable. Such cache poisoning cannot be prevented with common setups of DNSSEC. Our attacks apply to internal as well as to public services, for instance, we reveal that all eduroam services are vulnerable to our injection attacks, allowing us to launch exploits ranging from unauthorised access to eduroam networks to resource starvation. Depending on the application, our attacks cause system crashes, data corruption and leakage, degradation of security, and can introduce remote code execution and arbitrary errors. In our evaluation of the attacks in the Internet we find that all the standard compliant open DNS resolvers we tested allow our injection attacks against applications and users on their networks.

Abstract

Background/Objectives: To evaluate the impact of intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) therapy on anatomical and visual outcomes in patients with macular neovascularization (MNV) secondary to chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (cCSC). Methods: This retrospective observational study reviewed the medical records of treatment-naïve patients diagnosed with cCSC complicated by MNV and treated with IVB injections over a 5-year period. The presence of MNV was confirmed using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT), and subretinal fluid (SRF) were recorded pre- and post-IVB treatment. Results: Twenty-two eyes of 22 patients (mean age, 68 ± 11 years) were included. After a mean follow-up of 21.0 ± 14.6 months, SRF significantly decreased from baseline (176.86 ± 115.62 µm) to the final follow-up (80.95 ± 87.32 µm, p = 0.003). A greater SRF reduction was associated with more injections (>7) (p = 0.047). However, no significant changes were observed in BCVA (p > 0.05) or SFCT (p > 0.05), irrespective of follow-up duration or injection frequency. Complete resolution of SRF was achieved in nine patients (40.9%), and a significantly greater reduction in SFCT was observed in complete responders compared to non-responders (p = 0.03). Conclusions: IVB therapy significantly reduced SRF in cCSC patients with secondary MNV, though it did not lead to visual improvement or significant changes in SFCT. However, greater choroidal thinning in patients with complete fluid resorption may suggest distinct underlying mechanisms or alternative sources of subretinal fluid beyond the MNV itself.

Abstract

Mobility tasks like the Timed Up and Go test (TUG), cognitive TUG (cogTUG), and walking with turns provide insights into the impact of Parkinson’s disease (PD) on motor control, balance, and cognitive function. We assess the test–retest reliability of these tasks in 262 PD participants and 50 controls by evaluating machine learning models based on wearable-sensor-derived measures and statistical metrics. This evaluation examines total duration, subtask duration, and other quantitative measures across two trials. We show that the diagnostic accuracy for distinguishing PD from controls decreases by a mean of 1.8% between the first and the second trial, suggesting that task repetition may not be necessary for accurate diagnosis. Although the total duration remains relatively consistent between trials (intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) = 0.62 to 0.95), greater variability is seen in subtask duration and sensor-derived measures, reflected in machine learning performance and statistical differences. Our findings also show that this variability differs not only between controls and PD participants but also among groups with varying levels of PD severity, indicating the need to consider population characteristics. Relying solely on total task duration and conventional statistical metrics to gauge the reliability of mobility tasks may fail to reveal nuanced variations in movement.

Abstract

BACKGROUND AND AIM: There is no gold-standard and considerable heterogeneity in outcome measures used to evaluate treatments for opioid use disorder (OUD) along the opioid treatment cascade. The aim of this study was to develop the US National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) National Drug Abuse Treatment Clinical Trials Network (CTN) opioid use disorder core outcomes set (OUD-COS). DESIGN: Four-round, e-Delphi expert panel consensus study and plenary research group discussion and targeted consultation. SETTING: United States. PARTICIPANTS: A panel of 25 members including clinical practitioners, clinical researchers and administrative staff from the CTN, the networks affiliated clinical and community sites and the NIDA Centre for the CTN. MEASUREMENTS: From a pool of 24 candidate items in four domains (biomedical/disease status; behaviors, symptoms and functioning; opioid treatment cascade; and morbidity and mortality), the panel completed an on-line questionnaire to rank items with defined specification on a 9-point scale for importance, with a standard 70% consensus criterion. FINDINGS: After the fourth round of the questionnaire and subsequent discussion, consensus was reached for five outcomes: two patient-reported (global impression of improvement and incident non-fatal overdose); one clinician-reported (illicit/non-medical drug toxicology); and two from administrative records (duration of treatment and fatal opioid poisoning). CONCLUSIONS: An e-Delphi consensus study has produced the US National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) National Drug Abuse Treatment Clinical Trials Network opioid use disorder core outcomes set (version 1) for opioid use disorder treatment efficacy and effectiveness research.

113. Understanding Stability and Change in Depressive Symptom Trajectories across Young Adulthood through the Lens of Career Development: A Mixed-Methods Study

Abstract

Research has documented both stable and nonstable trajectories of depressive symptoms across young adulthood, but has not explored the mechanisms that might explain change in level of depressive affect over time. To explore this question, the current study draws on data from an Israeli longitudinal study of 205 young adults who reported their depressed symptoms four times from ages 23 to 35 years. Employing a latent profile analysis (LPA), three distinct trajectories of depressive symptoms were identified: stable low, moderate and decreasing, and stable high. To understand how stability and change in the course of depressive symptoms across time aligns with career development, 60 participants (20 from each profile), who had completed in-depth career development history interviews at age 29, were randomly selected. Subjecting the interviews to qualitative analysis showed that participants belonging to the stable low depressive symptoms trajectory were more likely to be intrinsically motivated, having the capacity to learn from their experiences, which resulted in a more successful career pursuit. In contrast, participants who consistently exhibited a high level of depressive affect were more likely to lack motivation, tended to feel at a loss, and were less likely to know what they want to do with their lives. Participants who were identified as belonging to the moderate and decreasing trajectory were more likely to describe the lack of a clear view of their future career plans. However, due to encouragement from significant others, they eventually found their niche. Conceptually, findings underscore the importance of understanding career factors that could covary with stability or change in the level of depressive symptoms during young adulthood.

Abstract

Hofmann and Streicher famously showed how to lift Grothendieck universes into presheaf topoi, and Streicher has extended their result to the case of sheaf topoi by sheafification. In parallel, van den Berg and Moerdijk have shown in the context of algebraic set theory that similar constructions continue to apply even in weaker metatheories. Unfortunately, sheafification seems not to preserve an important realignment property enjoyed by the presheaf universes that plays a critical role in models of univalent type theory as well as synthetic Tait computability, a recent technique to establish syntactic properties of type theories and programming languages. In the context of multiple universes, the realignment property also implies a coherent choice of codes for connectives at each universe level, thereby interpreting the cumulativity laws present in popular formulations of Martin-L\"of type theory. We observe that a slight adjustment to an argument of Shulman constructs a cumulative universe hierarchy satisfying the realignment property at every level in any Grothendieck topos. Hence one has direct-style interpretations of Martin-L\"of type theory with cumulative universes into all Grothendieck topoi. A further implication is to extend the reach of recent synthetic methods in the semantics of cubical type theory and the syntactic metatheory of type theory and programming languages to all Grothendieck topoi., Comment: Integrated feedback from reviewers, fixed typographic errors

ObjectiveExternalizing behavior problems (EBPs) are common in children, with significant long-term impact on the child and family members. Parents, particularly mothers, of children with EBPs often experience heightened emotional distress. One crucial factor affecting parents’ ability to manage this distress is their level of differentiation-of-self (DOS). Differentiated parents are more likely to engage in practices that meet their child’s psychological needs, thus supporting the self-determination theory principles vital for a child’s well-being. This study examined the impact of parental DOS on parenting practices and subsequently on the child’s EBPs, exploring possible differences between mothers and fathers.MethodsThirty-two mother–father dyads with children aged 6–14, diagnosed with EBPs participated. Parents completed the Differentiation of Self Inventory–Short Form, the Revised Parents as a Social Context Questionnaire, and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire to assess parental DOS, practices, and child’s EBPs, respectively. Adjusted parallel mediation models examined the mediating role of parental practices in the relationship between parental DOS and a child’s EBPs.ResultsWhile no direct link between parental DOS and child’s symptoms was found, a complete mediation model indicated need-frustrating practices mediating between parental DOS and a child’s EBPs, for both mothers and fathers. Additionally, fathers’ need-supportive practices, but not mothers’, were negatively associated with the child’s symptoms.DiscussionThese findings highlight the interaction between parental traits, need-frustrating practices, and a child’s psychopathology. Notably, fathers’ supportive behaviors emerged as potential protective factors against child’s EBPs, suggesting promising directions for future research and interventions targeting fathers.

Abstract

Abstract Background United States drug overdose deaths are being driven by the increasing prevalence of fentanyl, but whether patients are knowingly using fentanyl is unclear. We examined the analytical confirmation of fentanyl in emergency department (ED) patients with documented heroin overdose. Hypothesis We hypothesized that the proportion of fentanyl and fentanyl analogs would be higher than that of confirmed heroin. Methods This is a subgroup analysis from a prospective multicenter consecutive cohort of ED patients age 18+ with opioid overdose presenting to 10 US sites within the Toxicology Investigators Consortium from 2020 to 2021. Toxicology analysis was performed using liquid chromatography quadrupole time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry. De‐identified toxicology results were paired with the clinical database. The primary outcome was the proportion of patients with fentanyl analytes detected in their serum. Abstract

There is a strong, positive relationship between childhood literacy and physical and mental health outcomes in adulthood. Through primary care-based literacy interventions, pediatricians reach children and their families long before they enter traditional education venues. In so doing, pediatricians play a key role in children's school readiness and in turn health outcomes. The current state of childhood literacy in United States defines an increasingly urgent platform for the healthcare profession generally, and pediatricians specifically, to embrace. Through reviewing the existing literature on the impact of childhood literacy on physical, mental, and social-emotional health outcomes, we hope to highlight the need for increased collaboration between the education and medical fields to further promote the literacy interventions in pediatric healthcare settings.

Abstract

Introduction: Endothelial cells have a crucial function in transporting and exchanging various nutrients. O-GlcNAcylation, mediated by O-GlcNAc transferase (OGT), involves the addition of N-acetylglucosamine to proteins and serves as an intracellular nutrient sensing mechanism. However, the role of O-GlcNAcylation in endothelial cells remains poorly understood. Objective: This study investigated the role of O-GlcNAcylation in endothelial cells. Methods: Endothelial-cell-specific Ogt -knockout mice (Ogt-ECKO) were generated by crossing Ogt-floxed mice (Ogt-flox) with VE-Cadherin Cre ERT2 mice. Ogt-ECKO mice and Ogt-flox control mice were subjected to a normal or high-fat diet, and their body weight, glucose metabolism, and lipid metabolism were examined. Results: Ogt-ECKO mice exhibited reduced body weight compared with Ogt-flox control mice under a high-fat diet. Lipid absorption was significantly impaired in Ogt-ECKO mice. Changes in the intercellular junctions of small intestinal lacteal endothelial cells from a button-like to a zipper-like configuration were observed. Furthermore, Ogt-ECKO mice showed decreased expression of VEGFR3. The administration of a nitric oxide donor restored lipid absorption and reversed the morphological alterations in Ogt-ECKO mice. Conclusions: These findings demonstrate the critical role of O-GlcNAcylation in endothelial cells in lipid absorption in the intestine through the modulation of lacteal junction morphology. These results provide novel insight into the metabolic regulatory mechanisms under physiological conditions and have implications for the development of new therapeutic strategies for obesity.

Abstract

Somatostatin (SST) plays diverse physiological roles in vertebrates, particularly in regulating growth hormone secretion from the pituitary. While the function of SST as a neuromodulator has been studied extensively, its role in fish and mammalian reproduction remains poorly understood. To address this gap, we investigated the involvement of the somatostatin system in the regulation of growth and reproductive hormones in tilapia. RNA sequencing of mature tilapia brain tissue revealed the presence of three SST peptides: SST6, SST3, and low levels of SST1. Four different isoforms of the somatostatin receptor (SSTR) subfamily were also identified in the tilapia genome. Phylogenetic and synteny analysis identified tiSSTR2-like as the root of the tree, forming two mega clades, with SSTR1 and SSTR4 in one and SSTR2a, SSTR3a, and SSTR5b in the other. Interestingly, the tiSSTR-5 isoforms 5x1, 5x2, and 5x3 were encoded in the sstr3b gene and were an artifact of misperception in the nomenclature in the database. RNA-seq of separated pituitary cell populations showed that SSTRs were expressed in gonadotrophs, with sstr3a enriched in luteinizing hormone (LH) cells and sstr3b significantly enriched in follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) cells. Notably, cyclosomatostatin, an SSTR antagonist, induced cAMP activity in all SSTRs, with SSTR3a displaying the highest response, whereas octreotide, an SSTR agonist, showed a binding profile like that observed in human receptors. Binding site analysis of tiSSTRs from tilapia pituitary cells revealed the presence of canonical binding sites characteristic of peptide-binding class A G-protein-coupled receptors. Based on these findings, we explored the effect of somatostatin on gonadotropin release from the pituitary in vivo. Whereas cyclosomatostatin increased LH and FSH plasma levels at 2 h post-injection, octreotide decreased FSH levels after 2 h, but the LH levels remained unaffected. Overall, our findings provide important insights into the somatostatin system and its mechanisms of action, indicating a potential role in regulating growth and reproductive hormones. Further studies of the complex interplay between SST, its receptors, and reproductive hormones may advance reproductive control and management in cultured populations.

Abstract

PurposeIn describing our ten-year experience with treating chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) as part of the Glivec Patient Assistance Program (GIPAP) in rural Rwanda, we evaluate (1) patient characteristics and treatment outcomes, (2) resource-adapted management strategies, and (3) the impact of diagnostic capacity development.MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed all patients with BCR-ABL-positive CML enrolled in this GIPAP program between 2009 and 2018. Clinical data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Kaplan-Meier methods, proportional hazards regression, and the Kruskal-Wallis test.ResultsOne hundred twenty-four patients were included. The median age at diagnosis was 34 (range 8-81) years. On imatinib, 91% achieved complete hematologic response (CHR) after a median of 49 days. Seven (6%) and 12 (11%) patients had primary and secondary imatinib resistance, respectively. The 3-year overall survival was 80% (95% CI, 72 to 87) for the cohort, with superior survival in imatinib responders compared with those with primary and secondary resistance. The median time from imatinib initiation to CHR was 59 versus 38 days (P = .040) before and after in-country diagnostic testing, whereas the median time to diagnosis (P = .056) and imatinib initiation (P = .170) was not significantly different.ConclusionCoupling molecular diagnostics with affordable access to imatinib within a comprehensive cancer care delivery program is a successful long-term strategy to treat CML in resource-constrained settings. Our patients are younger and have higher rates of imatinib resistance compared with historic cohorts in high-income countries. High imatinib resistance rates highlight the need for access to molecular monitoring, resistance testing, and second-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitors, as well as systems to support drug adherence. Hematologic response is an accurate resource-adapted predictor of survival in this setting. Local diagnostic capacity development has allowed for continuous, timely CML care delivery in Rwanda.

Abstract

Scene understanding is an active research area. Commercial depth sensors, such as Kinect, have enabled the release of several RGB-D datasets over the past few years which spawned novel methods in 3D scene understanding. More recently with the launch of the LiDAR sensor in Apple's iPads and iPhones, high quality RGB-D data is accessible to millions of people on a device they commonly use. This opens a whole new era in scene understanding for the Computer Vision community as well as app developers. The fundamental research in scene understanding together with the advances in machine learning can now impact people's everyday experiences. However, transforming these scene understanding methods to real-world experiences requires additional innovation and development. In this paper we introduce ARKitScenes. It is not only the first RGB-D dataset that is captured with a now widely available depth sensor, but to our best knowledge, it also is the largest indoor scene understanding data released. In addition to the raw and processed data from the mobile device, ARKitScenes includes high resolution depth maps captured using a stationary laser scanner, as well as manually labeled 3D oriented bounding boxes for a large taxonomy of furniture. We further analyze the usefulness of the data for two downstream tasks: 3D object detection and color-guided depth upsampling. We demonstrate that our dataset can help push the boundaries of existing state-of-the-art methods and it introduces new challenges that better represent real-world scenarios.

Abstract

Unconventional superconductors have Cooper pairs with lower symmetries than in conventional superconductors. In most unconventional superconductors, the additional symmetry breaking occurs in relation to typical ingredients such as strongly correlated Fermi liquid phases, magnetic fluctuations, or strong spin-orbit coupling in noncentrosymmetric structures. In this article, we show that the time-reversal symmetry breaking in the superconductor LaNiGa$_2$ is enabled by its previously unknown topological electronic band structure. Our single crystal diffraction experiments indicate a nonsymmorphic crystal structure, in contrast to the previously reported symmorphic structure. The nonsymmorphic symmetries transform the $k_z=\pi/c$ plane of the Brillouin zone boundary into a node-surface. Band-structure calculations reveal that distinct Fermi surfaces become degenerate on the node-surface and form Dirac lines and a Dirac loop at the Fermi level. Two symmetry related Dirac points remain degenerate under spin-orbit coupling. ARPES measurements confirm the calculations and provide evidence for the Fermi surface degeneracies on the node-surface. These unique topological features enable an unconventional superconducting gap in which time-reversal symmetry can be broken in the absence of other typical ingredients. LaNiGa$_2$ is therefore a topological crystalline superconductor that breaks time-reversal symmetry without any overlapping magnetic ordering or fluctuations. Our findings will enable future discoveries of additional topological superconductors.
