High Energy Physics - Experiment ,Physics - Instrumentation and Detectors - Abstract
Due to a very low production rate of electron anti-neutrinos ($\bar{\nu}_e$) via nuclear fusion in the Sun, a flux of solar $\bar{\nu}_e$ is unexpected. An appearance of $\bar{\nu}_e$ in solar neutrino flux opens a new window for the new physics beyond the standard model. In particular, a spin-flavor precession process is expected to convert an electron neutrino into an electron anti-neutrino (${\nu_e\to\bar{\nu}_e}$) when neutrino has a finite magnetic moment. In this work, we have searched for solar $\bar{\nu}_e$ in the Super-Kamiokande experiment, using neutron tagging to identify their inverse beta decay signature. We identified 78 $\bar{\nu}_e$ candidates for neutrino energies of 9.3 to 17.3 MeV in 2970.1 live days with a fiducial volume of 22.5 kiloton water (183.0 kton$\cdot$year exposure). The energy spectrum has been consistent with background predictions and we thus derived a 90% confidence level upper limit of ${4.7\times10^{-4}}$ on the $\nu_e\to\bar{\nu}_e$ conversion probability in the Sun. We used this result to evaluate the sensitivity of future experiments, notably the Super-Kamiokande Gadolinium (SK-Gd) upgrade., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, 7 tables

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
As a baryon number violating process with $\Delta B=2$, neutron-antineutron oscillation ($n\to\bar n$) provides a unique test of baryon number conservation. We have performed a search for $n\to\bar n$ oscillation with bound neutrons in Super-Kamiokande, with the full data set from its first four run periods, representing an exposure of 0.37~Mton-years. The search used a multivariate analysis trained on simulated $n\to\bar n$ events and atmospheric neutrino backgrounds and resulted in 11 candidate events with an expected background of 9.3 events. In the absence of statistically significant excess, we derived a lower limit on $\bar n$ appearance lifetime in $^{16}$O nuclei of $3.6\times{10}^{32}$ years and on the neutron-antineutron oscillation time of $\tau_{n\to\bar n} > 4.7\times10^{8}$~s at 90\% C.L..

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
We have searched for proton decay via $p\to e^+\pi^0$ and $p\to \mu^+\pi^0$ modes with the enlarged fiducial volume data of Super-Kamiokande from April 1996 to May 2018, which corresponds to 450 kton$\cdot$years exposure. We have accumulated about 25% more livetime and enlarged the fiducial volume of the Super-Kamiokande detector from 22.5 kton to 27.2 kton for this analysis, so that 144 kton$\cdot$years of data, including 78 kton$\cdot$years of additional fiducial volume data, has been newly analyzed. No candidates have been found for $p\to e^+\pi^0$ and one candidate remains for $p\to \mu^+\pi^0$ in the conventional 22.5 kton fiducial volume and it is consistent with the atmospheric neutrino background prediction. We set lower limits on the partial lifetime for each of these modes: $\tau/B(p\to e^+\pi^0) > 2.4 \times 10^{34}$ years and $\tau/B(p\to \mu^+\pi^0) > 1.6 \times 10^{34}$ years at 90% confidence level., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
We present a search for an excess of neutrino interactions due to dark matter in the form of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) annihilating in the galactic center or halo based on the data set of Super-Kamiokande-I, -II, -III and -IV taken from 1996 to 2016. We model the neutrino flux, energy, and flavor distributions assuming WIMP self-annihilation is dominant to $\nu \overline{\nu}$, $\mu^+\mu^-$, $b\overline{b}$, or $W^+W^-$. The excess is in comparison to atmospheric neutrino interactions which are modeled in detail and fit to data. Limits on the self-annihilation cross section $\langle \sigma_{A} V \rangle$ are derived for WIMP masses in the range 1 GeV to 10 TeV, reaching as low as $9.6 \times10^{-23}$ cm$^3$ s$^{-1}$ for 5 GeV WIMPs in $b\bar b$ mode and $1.2 \times10^{-24}$ cm$^3$ s$^{-1}$ for 1 GeV WIMPs in $\nu \bar \nu$ mode. The obtained sensitivity of the Super-Kamiokande detector to WIMP masses below several tens of GeV is the best among similar indirect searches to date., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, Submitted to Phys. High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
A search for proton decay into three charged leptons has been performed by using 0.37$\,$Mton$\cdot$years of data collected in Super-Kamiokande. All possible combinations of electrons, muons and their anti-particles consistent with charge conservation were considered as decay modes. No significant excess of events has been found over the background, and lower limits on the proton lifetime divided by the branching ratio have been obtained. The limits range between $9.2\times10^{33}$ to $3.4\times10^{34}$ years at 90$\,$% confidence level, improving by more than an order of magnitude upon limits from previous experiments. A first limit has been set for the $p\rightarrow\mu^-e^+e^+$ mode.

Summary: Heterochrony—alteration to the rate or timing of development—is an important mechanism of trait differentiation associated with speciation. Heterochrony may explain the morphological divergence between two polyploid species, June sucker (Chasmistes liorus) and Utah sucker (Catostomus ardens). The larvae of both species have terminal mouths; however, as adults, June sucker and Utah sucker develop subterminal and ventral mouths, respectively. We document a difference in the timing of shape development and a corresponding change in the timing of gene expression, suggesting the distinctive mouth morphology in June suckers may result from paedomorphosis. Specifically, adult June suckers exhibit an intermediate mouth morphology between the larval (terminal) and ancestral (ventral) states. Endemic and sympatric Chasmistes/Catostomus pairs in two other lakes also are morphologically divergent, but genetically similar. These species pairs could have resulted from the differential expression of genes and corresponding divergence in trait development. Paedomorphosis may lead to adaptive diversification in Catostomids.

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
We study the membrane wrapping mode corrections to the Kaluza-Klein (KK) 6-brane in eleven dimensions. We examine the localized KK6-brane in the extended space in $E_{7(7)}$ exceptional field theory. In order to discuss the physical origin of the localization in the extended space, we consider a probe M2-brane in eleven dimensions. We show that a three-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 4$ gauge theory is naturally interpreted as a membrane generalization of the two-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = (4,4)$ gauged linear sigma model for the fundamental string. We point out that the vector field in the $\mathcal{N}= 4$ model is identified as a dual coordinate of the KK6-brane geometry. We find that the BPS vortex in the gauge theory gives rise to the violation of the isometry along the dual direction. We then show that the vortex corrections are regarded as an instanton effect in M-theory induced by the probe M2-brane wrapping around the M-circle., Comment: 27 pages, 1 figure, version published in JHEP

Abstract We reported that the full-length width of medial tibial osteophytes comprising cartilage and bone parts correlates with medial meniscus extrusion (MME) in early-stage knee osteoarthritis (OA). However, no data exist on the prevalence of MME and its relationship with osteophytes in the elderly population. 1191 elderly individuals (females 57%; 72.9 years old on average) in the Bunkyo Health Study underwent standing plain radiograph and proton density-weighted MRI on knee joints. MRI-detected OA changes were evaluated according to the Whole-Organ Magnetic Resonance Imaging Score. A new method of assessing the cartilage and bone parts of osteophytes was developed using pseudo-coloring images of proton density-weighted fat-suppressed MRI. Most subjects showed Kellgren-Lawrence grade 1 or 2 radiographic medial knee OA (88.1%), MME (98.7%, 3.90 ± 2.01 mm), and medial tibial osteophytes (99.3%, 3.27 ± 1.50 mm). Regarding OA changes, MME was closely associated with the full-length width of medial tibial osteophytes (β = 1.114; 95% CI 1.069–1.159; p

Abstract Background The lymph node metastasis rate in right‐sided colon cancer is unknown, and the optimal central vascular ligation level remains controversial. We aimed to determine the lymph node metastasis rate and short‐term results of radical surgery with extended lymph node dissection in right‐sided colon cancer. Methods This prospective multicenter observational study included patients with stage II/III right‐sided colon cancer from five cancer hospitals. The metastasis rate of each node station was analyzed according to tumor location and main feeding artery. Results Between April 2018 and August 2021, 208 patients underwent dissection around the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) and vein (SMV). In transverse colon cancer, 7.5% and 2.5% of metastases occurred around the SMV and SMA at the root of the middle colic artery (MCA), respectively; 6.7% and 6.7% at the root of the right colic artery. In caecal cancer, 1.9% of metastases occurred around the SMV and 1.9% around the SMA. In ascending colon cancer, the rate was 1.1% around the SMV. Of the tumors, 17% fed mainly by the ileocolic artery had node metastases along the middle or right colic artery, as did 66.7% fed mainly by the right colic artery and 41.2% fed by the MCA (p = 0.01). Postoperative complications occurred in 42 patients (20.2%). Conclusion Routine prophylactic extended lymphadenectomy around the SMA might not be necessary in caecum and ascending colon cancer. Dissection around the SMA may be necessary in cases of transverse colon cancer or when the feeding artery is the MCA.

ABSTRACT Objective: Verify the clinical efficacy and safety of a low-cost tDCS device, in a clinical trial for major depressive disorder. Methods: 168 persons were recruited; 32 depressed individuals with moderate or severe depressive symptoms (HDRS17 scores higher than 18) were included and randomized for the trial (16 individuals in each group). The intervention consisted of 10 active anodal tDCS sessions at 2 mA for 30 minutes over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex; or sham. The main outcome was HDRS17; secondary outcomes included satisfaction (TSQM II) and quality of life (WHOQOL-BREF). Assessments at baseline, endpoint and at 30 days follow-up. Results: The sample was composed by a total of 11 men and 21 women, mean age of 42.75 years (95% CI: 38.10-47.40). Active treatment was superior than sham: There was a significant interaction between group and time regarding HDRS-17 scores (F = 4.089, df = 2, p = 0.029; partial Eta squared = 0. 239). Post hoc analyses exhibited a statistically significant difference between active and sham group symptoms after a 30 days follow-up (difference = -7.75, p = 0.008, Cohen’s d = 1.069). There were 3 dropouts, all in the active group, due schedule issues. No severe adverse effects reported. Conclusion: The current active tDCS protocol was related with clinical improvement of depressive symptoms. Intervention was well-tolerated. Non-invasive brain stimulation techniques are still not routinely used, although a viable strategy for treatment-resistant patients, partial responders and people unable to use pharmacological treatment. We aim to increase knowledge and use of tDCS for the Brazilian population.

A 72-year-old man with type 2 sub-circumferential tumors in the descending colon and two nodules around the pedicle of the inferior mesenteric artery (main lymph node area) underwent laparoscopic left hemicolectomy with D3 lymphadenectomy. Two lymph nodes around the inferior mesenteric artery pedicle were completely excised. Pathological examination revealed a moderately differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma. Nodules were only found in the main lymph node area, and no lymph node structures were observed in these nodules. These tumor deposits (TDs) may be extramural TDs without lymph node structure or lymph node skip metastasis. The presence of TDs in colorectal cancer is associated with an adverse prognosis, and the requirement of chemotherapy in such cases should be examined. Therefore, it is important to correctly recognize TDs and categorize the disease into a high- or low-risk group within stage III. We report this case because it is necessary to review the definition of TDs, and the assessment of extramural TDs remains controversial.

This paper reports the first T2K measurement of the transverse kinematic imbalance in the single-$\pi^+$ production channel of neutrino interactions. We measure the differential cross sections in the muon-neutrino charged-current interaction on hydrocarbon with a single $\pi^+$ and at least one proton in the final state, at the ND280 off-axis near detector of the T2K experiment. The extracted cross sections are compared to the predictions from different neutrino-nucleus interaction event generators. Overall, the results show a preference for models which have a more realistic treatment of nuclear medium effects including the initial nuclear state and final-state interactions.

Core-collapse supernovae are among the most magnificent events in the observable universe. They produce many of the chemical elements necessary for life to exist and their remnants -- neutron stars and black holes -- are interesting astrophysical objects in their own right. However, despite millennia of observations and almost a century of astrophysical study, the explosion mechanism of core-collapse supernovae is not yet well understood. Hyper-Kamiokande is a next-generation neutrino detector that will be able to observe the neutrino flux from the next galactic core-collapse supernova in unprecedented detail. We focus on the first 500 ms of the neutrino burst, corresponding to the accretion phase, and use a newly-developed, high-precision supernova event generator to simulate Hyper-Kamiokande's response to five different supernova models. We show that Hyper-Kamiokande will be able to distinguish between these models with high accuracy for a supernova at a distance of up to 100 kpc. Once the next galactic supernova happens, this ability will be a powerful tool for guiding simulations towards a precise reproduction of the explosion mechanism observed in nature., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures. High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
The T2K experiment reports updated measurements of neutrino and antineutrino oscillations using both appearance and disappearance channels. This result comes from an exposure of $14.9~(16.4) \times 10^{20}$ protons on target in neutrino (antineutrino) mode. Significant improvements have been made to the neutrino interaction model and far detector reconstruction. An extensive set of simulated data studies have also been performed to quantify the effect interaction model uncertainties have on the T2K oscillation parameter sensitivity. T2K performs multiple oscillation analyses that present both frequentist and Bayesian intervals for the PMNS parameters. For fits including a constraint on \ssqthonethree from reactor data and assuming normal mass ordering T2K measures $\sin^2\theta_{23} = 0.53^{+0.03}_{-0.04}$ and $\Delta{}m^2_{32} = (2.45 \pm 0.07) \times 10^{-3}$ eV$^{2}$c$^{-4}$. The Bayesian analyses show a weak preference for normal mass ordering (89% posterior probability) and the upper $\sin^2\theta_{23}$ octant (80% posterior probability), with a uniform prior probability assumed in both cases. The T2K data exclude CP conservation in neutrino oscillations at the $2\sigma$ level., Comment: Update figure formatting

Mathematics - Probability - Abstract
We establish transience criteria for symmetric non-local Dirichlet forms on $L^2({\mathbb R}^d)$ in terms of the coefficient growth rates at infinity. Applying these criteria, we find a necessary and sufficient condition for recurrence of Dirichlet forms of symmetric stable-like with unbounded/degenerate coefficients. This condition indicates that both of the coefficient growth rates of small and big jump parts affect the sample path properties of the associated symmetric jump processes.

Species delimitation can be based on the consideration of several different criteria, including the differentiation of ecological or functional traits. Two species of Pacific rockfish, the dark rockfish (Sebastes ciliatus) and the dusky rockfish (Sebastes variabilis), appear to represent recently divergent evolutionary lineages. We evaluate evidence for the differentiation of these two species in somatic shape using geometric morphometrics at two locations in the northeast Pacific where they occur in sympatry. The somatic shape was significantly different between species, but the species’ shape did not vary between the two locations. Sebastes ciliatus had an upturned and relatively smaller head, eye, and jaw, and an elongated midbody, whereas S. variabilis had a downturned and larger head, eye, and jaw, and a shorter midbody. These results suggest that S. ciliatus and S. variabilis are morphometrically differentiated in a similar way in both locations. The somatic shape differentiation between these two sympatric species is similar to genus-wide patterns of somatic shape differentiation.

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
We report a search for astronomical neutrinos in the energy region from several GeV to TeV in the direction of the blazar TXS0506+056 using the Super-Kamiokande detector following the detection of a 100 TeV neutrino from the same location by the IceCube collaboration. Using Super-Kamiokande neutrino data across several data samples observed from April 1996 to February 2018 we have searched for both a total excess above known backgrounds across the entire period as well as localized excesses on smaller time scales in that interval. No significant excess nor significant variation in the observed event rate are found in the blazar direction. Upper limits are placed on the electron and muon neutrino fluxes at 90\% confidence level as $6.03 \times 10^{-7}$ and $4.52 \times 10^{-7}$ to $9.26 \times 10^{-10}$ [${\rm erg}/{\rm cm}^2/{\rm s}$], respectively.

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
Supernova detection is a major objective of the Super-Kamiokande (SK) experiment. In the next stage of SK (SK-Gd), gadolinium (Gd) sulfate will be added to the detector, which will improve the ability of the detector to identify neutrons. A core-collapse supernova will be preceded by an increasing flux of neutrinos and anti-neutrinos, from thermal and weak nuclear processes in the star, over a timescale of hours; some of which may be detected at SK-Gd. This could provide an early warning of an imminent core-collapse supernova, hours earlier than the detection of the neutrinos from core collapse. Electron anti-neutrino detection will rely on inverse beta decay events below the usual analysis energy threshold of SK, so Gd loading is vital to reduce backgrounds while maximising detection efficiency. Assuming normal neutrino mass ordering, more than 200 events could be detected in the final 12 hours before core collapse for a 15-25 solar mass star at around 200 pc, which is representative of the nearest red supergiant to Earth, $\mathrm{\alpha}$Ori (Betelgeuse). At a statistical false alarm rate of 1 per century, detection could be up to 10 hours before core collapse, and a pre-supernova star could be detected by SK-Gd up to 600 pc away. A pre-supernova alert could be provided to the astrophysics community following gadolinium loading., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures. Accepted by The Astrophysical Journal
