Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the use of second-look ultrasonography (US) for investigating additional suspicious lesions detected on preoperative staging magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for breast cancer. Methods: Between September 2008 and August 2010, 1,970 breast MRIs were performed at our medical institution for the evaluation of breast cancer before surgery. Second-look US was recommended for 135 patients with 149 suspicious lesions, following the MRI interpretation, and 108 patients with 121 lesions were included in this study. The detection rate on second-look US, according to the lesion type, diameter, and histopathological outcome, was analyzed. Results: Of the 121 lesions considered in this study, 97 (80.2%) were diagnosed on MRI as masses and 24 (19.8%) as non-mass-like lesions; 105 lesions (86.8%) were correlated and 16 (13.2%) were not correlated with the findings of second-look US. Of the 105 correlated lesions, 29 (27.6%) were proven to be malignant and 76 (72.4%) were benign. Although a greater number of large malignant lesions were correlated on second-look US than small benign lesions, there was no statistically significant difference according to lesion diameter or type, as seen on MRI or pathology. Conclusion: We have concluded that second-look US is a useful diagnostic tool for lesions incidentally detected on breast MRI, as in this study, it could identify 86.8% of the MRI-detected breast lesions.

Abstract

In this study, we examined loneliness and hope components as predictors of unhappy conditions (viz., anxious symptoms, depressive symptoms, & suicidal ideation) in young adults. The sample was comprised of 489 Hungarian college students. Results of conducting hierarchical regression analyses indicated that loneliness and hope pathways (but not hope agency) were important unique predictors of anxious symptoms, depressive symptoms, and suicidal ideation. Moreover, in part, consistent with the notion that hope might buffer the negative effects of loneliness on unhappy conditions, evidence for a significant Loneliness × Hope Pathways interaction effect in predicting each of the three indices of unhappy conditions was found. In contrast, the Loneliness × Hope Agency interaction effect was not found to be significant. Some implications of the present findings for the study and treatment of unhappy conditions in adults are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Objective: To compare the obstetric outcome and incidence of procedure-related adverse events after embryo reduction (ER) vs fetal reduction (FR), in multifetal pregnancies undergoing reduction to twins or singletons.Methods: We analyzed retrospectively data from multifetal pregnancies that underwent transvaginal ER (n = 181) at a mean gestational age of 7.6 weeks or transabdominal FR (n = 115) at a mean gestational age of 12.9 weeks between December 2006 and January 2017. FR was performed after a detailed fetal anomaly scan. The two groups were compared with respect to obstetric outcomes, such as incidence of miscarriage, early or late preterm delivery, maternal complications and fetal loss, and procedure-related adverse events, including incidence of subchorionic hematoma and procedure-related fetal loss.Results: Compared with pregnancies that underwent ER, the incidence of procedure-related fetal loss was lower in the FR group (7.2% vs 0.9%; P = 0.039; odds ratio (OR), 0.12; 95% CI, 0.02-0.89). Mean gestational age at delivery for twins was 34.2 weeks in the ER group and 35.7 weeks in the FR group (P = 0.014). Compared with the ER group, the FR group had lower miscarriage (8.8% vs 2.6%; P = 0.045; OR, 0.28; 95% CI, 0.08-0.97) and overall fetal loss (13.3% vs 5.2%; P = 0.031; OR, 0.36; 95% CI, 0.14-0.91) rates.Conclusions: The FR procedure is, overall, a better and safer approach to reducing morbidity and mortality in multifetal pregnancies. Spontaneous demise of one fetus may occur after ER, and FR has the advantage that chorionic villus sampling and ultrasound screening for increased nuchal translucency and anatomical defects can be conducted before the procedure. Abstract

Does close distance increase liking for a social object? In a preliminary sociogram task, an association between proximity and intimacy was found in drawings of self and others. In three experimental studies, male participants consistently preferred female targets who were (actually or appeared to be) close than far from them. Distance was manipulated through various means-sitting distance (Study 2), presenting two facial images separately to each eye by a stereoscopic device (Study 3), or a video clip (Study 4). This effect was stronger among those with deprived social needs and occurred in part because close (vs. far) targets seemed psychologically more accessible to the perceiver. Our findings offer rare experimental evidence for the empirically challenged propinquity effect and provide new insights on how distance shapes inner experience. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
