Abstract

The present comparison of the Batdorf (1974) flaw density and orientation distribution approach with Evans' (1978) elemental strength approach, with a view to identities in fracture criteria and distribution functions, notes that despite their fundamental differences in multiaxial loading fracture probabilities, the two approaches yield identical predictions. Lamon's (1988) assertion to the contrary, in light of different theoretical predictions by the two methods for the case of alumina disks loaded in flexure, is demonstrated to be in error.

Abstract

Phase‐graded carbides that exhibit high hardness and corrosion resistance on the surface and high fracture toughness in the bulk are useful in severe wear applications. A method for producing hard γ‐TaCy layer on the surface of a tough ζ‐Ta4C3‐x substrate by carburization is described in this study. The γ‐TaCy layer exhibited parabolic growth kinetics in the temperature and gas‐flow regimes investigated in this study. Analyses of the rate constants using a model of mass transport through two phases in equilibrium at the interface indicated diffusion of carbon through the product layer was the rate‐controlling step with diffusivities (1‐5 × 10−15 m2/s in the 1623‐1773K range) and enthalpy (213‐217 kJ/mol) matching those for carbon diffusion in γ‐TaCy. Nanohardness of the transformed γ‐TaCy layer increased as a function of distance from the carburized surface, with a maximum hardness occurring near the γ/ζ interface. Measurements of lattice parameters at different depths in the γ‐TaCy layer indicated that the hardness increase with depth was related to the increasing carbon deficiency of the γ‐TaCy phase through the thickness. 118. Assessment of stretched vortex subgrid-scale models for LES of incompressible inhomogeneous turbulent flow

Abstract

The physical space version of the stretched vortex subgrid scale model [Phys. Fluids 12, 1810 (2000)] is tested in large eddy simulations (LES) of the turbulent lid driven cubic cavity flow. LES is carried out using a higher order finite-difference method [J. Comput. Phys. 229, 8802 (2010)]. The effects of different vortex orientation models and subgrid turbulence spectrums are assessed through comparisons of the LES predictions against direct numerical simulations (DNS) [Phys. Fluids 12, 1363 (2000)]. Three Reynolds numbers 12000, 18000, and 22000 are studied. Good agreement with the DNS data for the mean and fluctuating quantities is observed.

Abstract

Malignant transformation of tumor accompanies profound changes in the normal neighboring tissue, called tumor stroma. The tumor stroma provides an environment favoring local tumor growth, invasion, and metastatic spreading. Nuclear imaging (PET/SPECT) measures biochemical and physiologic functions in the human body. In oncology, PET/SPECT is particularly useful for differentiating tumors from postsurgical changes or radiation necrosis, distinguishing benign from malignant lesions, identifying the optimal site for biopsy, staging cancers, and monitoring the response to therapy. Indeed, PET/SPECT is a powerful, proven diagnostic imaging modality that displays information unobtainable through other anatomical imaging, such as CT or MRI. When combined with coregistered CT data, [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose ([18F]FDG)-PET is particularly useful. However, [18F]FDG is not a target-specific PET tracer. This paper will review the tumor microenvironment targeting oncologic imaging such as angiogenesis, invasion, hypoxia, growth, and homing, and also therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals to provide a roadmap for additional applications of tumor imaging and therapy.

Abstract

Global consumption and discharge of palladium (Pd) have raised environmental concerns but also present an opportunity for the sustainable recovery and reuse of this precious metal. Adsorption has proven to be an efficient method for the selective recovery of Pd from industrial wastewater. This study investigated a hydrazone-linked covalent organic framework (Tfpa-OdCOF) as a potential material for the high-affinity adsorption of Pd2+ions from wastewater, achieving a Kdvalue of 3.62 × 106mL g–1. The electron-rich backbone of the COF contributes to its excellent selective removal efficiency (up to 100%) and adsorption capacity of 372.59 mg g–1. Furthermore, the Pd-adsorbed COF was evaluated as a sustainable catalyst for the Suzuki–Miyaura coupling reaction, demonstrating good catalytic conversion and recyclability. This work attempts to showcase a protocol for reusing waste palladium generated in water to fabricate heterogeneous catalysts and, thereby, promote the circular economy concept.

121. Porous Polycalix[4]arenes for Fast and Efficient Removal of Organic Micropollutants from Water

Abstract

Organic micropollutants are hazards to the environment and human health. Conventional technologies are often inefficient at removing them from wastewater. For example, commercial activated carbon (AC) exhibits slow uptake rates, limited capacities, and is costly to regenerate. Here, we report the utility of porous calix[4]arene-based materials, CalPn(n= 2–4), for water purification. Calixarenes are a common motif in supramolecular chemistry but have rarely been incorporated into extended, porous networks such as organic polymers. CalPnexhibit pollutant uptake rates (kobs) and adsorption capacities (qmax) that are among the highest reported. For example, the kobsof CalP4for bisphenol A (BPA) is 2.12 mg/g·min, which is significantly higher (16 to 240 times) than kobsfor ACs and 1.4 times higher than that of the most efficient material previously reported; the qmaxof CalP4for BPA is 403 mg/g. The CalPnpolymers can be regenerated several times, with performance levels left undiminished, by a simple wash procedure that is less energy intensive than that required for ACs. These findings demonstrate the potential of calixarene-based materials for organic micropollutant removal.

132. Single Cavity Trapped Vortex Combustor Simulations

Abstract

The present work describes steady and unsteady computation of reacting flow in a Trapped Vortex Combustor. The primary motivation of this study is to develop this concept into a working combustor in modern gas turbines. The present work is an effort towards development of an experimental model test rig for further understanding dynamics of a single cavity trapped vortex combustor. The steady computations with and without combustion have been done for L/D of 0.8, 1 and 1.2; also unsteady non-reacting flow simulation has been done for L/D of 1. Fuel used for the present study is methane and Eddy-Dissipation model has been used for combustion-turbulence interactions. For L/D of 0.8, combustion efficiency is maximum and pattern factor is minimum. Also, primary vortex in the cavity is more stable and symmetric for L/D of 0.8. From unsteady non-reacting flow simulations, it is found that there is no vortex shedding from the cavity but there are oscillations in the span-wise direction of the combustor.

Abstract

Bio-efficacy of Aureofungin-sol, an antifungal antibiotic, for control of downy mildew and powdery mildew of grape was evaluated during October 2008 - April 2009 fruiting season in vineyards at three locations in Maharashtra. Four to nine sprays of Aureofungin-sol, @ 0.108, 0.163 and 0.217 g/l, starting from 12-16 days to 46-75 days after fruit pruning gave good control of downy mildew on leaves and bunches, and increased harvestable yield over the Control. Similarly, four sprays of Aureofungin-sol @ 0.108 g/l at 11 to 20 days' interval at 65 days after pruning provided complete control of powdery mildew on leaves and bunches. No residue of Aureofungin-sol was found in harvest samples above the limit of detection (0.1 mg/kg).

Abstract

Source camera identification is one of the emerging field in digital image forensics, which aims at identifying the source camera used for capturing the given image. The technique uses photo response non-uniformity (PRNU) noise as a camera fingerprint, as it is found to be one of the unique characteristic which is capable of distinguishing the images even if they are captured from similar cameras. Most of the existing PRNU based approaches are very sensitive to the random noise components existing in the estimated PRNU, and also they are not robust when some simple manipulations are performed on the images. Hence a new feature based approach of PRNU is proposed for the source camera identification by choosing the features which are robust for image manipulations. The PRNU noise is extracted from the images using wavelet based denoising method and is represented by higher order wavelet statistics (HOWS), which are invariant features for image manipulations and geometric variations. The features are fed to support vector machine classifiers to identify the originating source camera for the given image and the results have been verified by performing ten-fold cross validation technique. The experiments have been carried out using the images captured from various cell phone cameras and it demonstrated that the proposed algorithm is capable of identifying the source camera of the given image with good accuracy. The developed technique can be used for differentiating the images, even if they are captured from similar cameras, which belongs to same make and model. The analysis have also showed that the proposed technique remains robust even if the images are subjected to simple manipulations or geometric variations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
