Abstract

In the Color Glass Condensate approach to the description of high energy heavy ion collisions, one needs to superimpose small random Gaussian distributed fluctuations to the classical background field, in order to resum the leading secular terms that result from the Weibel instability, that would otherwise lead to pathological results beyond leading order. In practical numerical simulations, one needs to know this spectrum of fluctuations at a proper time $\tau \ll Q_s^{-1}$ shortly after the collision, in the Fock-Schwinger gauge $A^\tau=0$. In this paper, we derive these fluctuations from first principles, by solving the Yang-Mills equations linearized around the classical background, with plane wave initial conditions in the remote past. We perform the intermediate steps in light-cone gauge, and we convert the results to the Fock-Schwinger gauge at the end. Abstract

Organotin compounds (OTs) are exclusively anthropogenic and have been widely used for their biocidal properties and as stabilizers in various industrial applications. Hence organotins are common pollutants. Their high toxicity has led to their entry on the EU water framework's priority substances' list. However, few studies are available regarding their behaviour in surface waters, in particular, in intermittent Mediterranean rivers. The Vene is an intermittent river located in Languedoc-Roussillon, southern France. It is the main tributary of an important shellfish farming site: the Thau lagoon. The present study aims at establishing the presence of OTs on a 1.5 km long reach of the river into which a waste water treatment plant (WWTP) discharges. The study is carried out during steady-state flow conditions over two consecutive years and investigates potential OTs sources in everyday domestic activities. Routine field monitoring was carried out over a 5 month period during the springs of 2008 and 2009. The results establish the presence of butyltins and octyltins throughout the 1.5 km long reach at concentrations exceeding the maximum allowable concentration levels imposed by the water framework directive. The WWTP is recognized as an important OTs point source; however, using trace and rare earth elements as tracers, an urban stormwater sewage gutter is identified as a secondary source. Its impact on the river's pollutant loads is however variable in time because of flow intermittency. The paper discusses the need for specific monitoring and management schemes for intermittent rivers.

Abstract

International audience; Polarisation of light is a key observable to provide information about asymmetry or anisotropy within a radiative source. Polarimetry of auroral emission lines in the Earth's upper atmosphere has been overlooked for decades. However, the bright red auroral line (6300Å) produced by collisional impact with electrons precipitating along magnetic field lines is a good candidate to search for polarisation. This problem was investigated recently with observations obtained by Lilensten et al (2008), Barthélemy et al (2011) and Lilensten et al (2013) with a photopolarimeter. Analysis of the data indicates that the red auroral emission line is polarised at a level of a few percent. The results are compared to theoretical predictions of Bommier et al (2011) that were obtained for a collimated beam. The comparison suggests the existence of depolarization processes whose origin will be discussed. A new dedicated spectropolarimeter currently under development will also be presented. This instrument will cover the optical spectrum from approximately 400 to 700 nm providing simultaneously the polarisation of the red line and of other interesting auroral emission lines such as N2+ 1NG (4278Å), other N2 bands, etc... The importance of these polarisation measurements in the context of upper atmosphere modelling and geomagnetic activity will be discussed. Abstract

We propose a minimal description of single field dark energy/modified gravity within the effective field theory formalism for cosmological perturbations, which encompasses most existing models. We start from a generic Lagrangian given as an arbitrary function of the lapse and of the extrinsic and intrinsic curvature tensors of the time hypersurfaces in unitary gauge, i.e. choosing as time slicing the uniform scalar field hypersurfaces. Focusing on linear perturbations, we identify seven Lagrangian operators that lead to equations of motion containing at most two (space or time) derivatives, the background evolution being determined by the time dependent coefficients of only three of these operators. We then establish a dictionary that translates any existing or future model whose Lagrangian can be written in the above form into our parametrized framework. As an illustration, we study Horndeski's-or generalized Galileon-theories and show that they can be described, up to linear order, by only six of the seven operators mentioned above. This implies, remarkably, that the dynamics of linear perturbations can be more general than that of Horndeski while remaining second order. Finally, in order to make the link with observations, we provide the entire set of linear perturbation equations in Newtonian gauge, the effective Newton constant in the quasi-static approximation and the ratio of the two gravitational potentials, in terms of the time-dependent coefficients of our Lagrangian., 26 pages, 1 table. v2: App. B added, references added, matches published version

We find that in the long-time limit, the pair correlation function scales with a characteristic length increasing as the square of the average domain size. In that limit, a few large domains occupy almost all the space with many small domains between them. In contrast to the usual picture of coarsening, the average domain size here is not a characteristic length of the growth problem.. Instead, one finds a power-law distribution for the sizes of large domains with a cut-off at e length which grows as the square of the average size of the domains.

We study the following 1D two-species reaction diffusion model : there is a small concentration of B-particles with diffusion constant $D_B$ in an homogenous background of W-particles with diffusion constant $D_W$; two W-particles of the majority species either coagulate ($W+W \longrightarrow W$) or annihilate ($W+W \longrightarrow \emptyset$) with the respective probabilities $ p_c=(q-2)/(q-1) $ and $p_a=1/(q-1)$; a B-particle and a W-particle annihilate ($W+B \longrightarrow \emptyset$) with probability 1. The exponent $\theta(q,\lambda=D_B/D_W)$ describing the asymptotic time decay of the minority B-species concentration can be viewed as a generalization of the exponent of persistent spins in the zero-temperature Glauber dynamics of the 1D $q$-state Potts model starting from a random initial condition : the W-particles represent domain walls, and the exponent $\theta(q,\lambda)$ characterizes the time decay of the probability that a diffusive "spectator" does not meet a domain wall up to time $t$. We extend the methods introduced by Derrida, Hakim and Pasquier ({\em Phys. Rev. Lett.} {\bf 75} 751 (1995); Saclay preprint T96/013, to appear in {\em J. Stat. Abstract

We present a new QCD description of the ATLAS jet veto measurement, using the Banfi-Marchesini-Smye equation to constrain the inter-jet QCD radiation. This equation resums emissions of soft gluons at large angles, at leading-logarithmic accuracy, and accounts for both the so-called Sudakov and non-global logarithms. We show that this approach is able to reproduce, with no fitting parameters, the fraction of high-pT forward/backward di-jet events which do not contain additional hard emissions in the inter-jet rapidity range. We also compute the gap fraction in fixed-order perturbation theory to O(alpha_s^2) and show that the perturbative series is unstable at large rapidity intervals., 10 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

We discuss the thermodynamics of the O(N) model across the corresponding phase transition using the two-loop Phi-derivable approximation of the effective potential and compare our results to those obtained in the literature within the Hartree-Fock approximation. In particular, we find that in the chiral limit the transition is of the second order, whereas it was found to be of the first order in the Hartree-Fock case. These features are manifest at the level of the thermodynamical observables. We also compute the thermal sigma and pion masses from the curvature of the effective potential. In the chiral limit, this guarantees that the Goldstone's theorem is obeyed in the broken phase. A realistic parametrization of the model in the N=4 case, based on the vacuum values of the curvature masses, shows that a sigma mass of around 450 MeV can be obtained. The equations are renormalized after extending our previous results for the N=1 case by means of the general procedure described in [J. Berges et al., Annals Phys. 320, 344-398 (2005)]. When restricted to the Hartree-Fock approximation, our approach reveals that certain problems raised in the literature concerning the renormalization are completely lifted. Finally, we introduce a new type of Phi-derivable approximation in which the gap equation is not solved at the same level of accuracy as the accuracy at which the potential is computed. We discuss the consistency and applicability of these types of "hybrid" approximations and illustrate them in the two-loop case by showing that the corresponding effective potential is renormalizable and that the transition remains of the second order., 26 pages, 9 figures, uses RevTeX4-1, published version

Abstract

We investigate the cosmological dynamics of a class of supersymmetric chameleon models coupled to cold dark matter fermions. Supergravity corrections ensure that these models are efficiently screened in all astrophysical objects of interest, however this does not preclude the enhancement of gravity on linear cosmological scales. We analyse the background cosmology and solve the modified equations for the growth of cold dark matter density perturbations in closed form. Using this, we go on to derive the modified linear power spectrum which is characterised by two scales, the horizon size at matter-radiation equality and at the redshift when the chameleon reaches the minimum of its effective potential. The model includes a cosmological constant in the form of a Fayet-Illiopolous term, which emerges at late times due to the coupling of the chameleon to two charged scalars. We examine the conditions under which this leads to viable background cosmology and go on to analyse the deviations from the LCDM predictions in the linear regime. We find that for reasonable values in the model's parameter space there is generically a region where the model's cosmology is viable and current measurements can be reproduced. A small discrepancy of the matter power spectrum from its LCDM counterpart can be obtained in a smaller subset of the parameter space., 29 pages, five figures, updated to reflect published version. The main goal of the working group was to present the state of the art of Higgs Physics at the LHC, integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. This report follows the first working group report Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables (CERN-2011-002) and the second working group report Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 2. Differential Distributions (CERN-2012-002). After the discovery of a Higgs boson at the LHC in mid-2012 this report focuses on refined prediction of Standard Model (SM) Higgs phenomenology around the experimentally observed value of 125-126 GeV, refined predictions for heavy SM-like Higgs bosons as well as predictions in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and first steps to go beyond these models. The other main focus is on the extraction of the characteristics and properties of the newly discovered particle such as couplings to SM particles, spin and CP-quantum numbers etc.

Abstract

52 p.; International audience; This report summarizes the work of the Energy Frontier Higgs Boson working group of the 2013 Community Summer Study (Snowmass). We identify the key elements of a precision Higgs physics program and document the physics potential of future experimental facilities as elucidated during the Snowmass study. We study Higgs couplings to gauge boson and fermion pairs, double Higgs production for the Higgs self-coupling, its quantum numbers and $C\!P$-mixing in Higgs couplings, the Higgs mass and total width, and prospects for direct searches for additional Higgs bosons in extensions of the Standard Model. Our report includes projections of measurement capabilities from detailed studies of the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC), a Gamma-Gamma Collider, the International Linear Collider (ILC), the Large Hadron Collider High-Luminosity Upgrade (HL-LHC), Very Large Hadron Colliders up to 100 TeV (VLHC), a Muon Collider, and a Triple-Large Electron Positron Collider (TLEP).

Abstract

We develop a Principal Component Analysis aimed at classifying a sub-set of 27,350 spectra of galaxies in the range 0.4 < z < 1.0 collected by the VIMOS Public Extragalactic Redshift Survey (VIPERS). We apply an iterative algorithm to simultaneously repair parts of spectra affected by noise and/or sky residuals, and reconstruct gaps due to rest-frame transformation, and obtain a set of orthogonal spectral templates that span the diversity of galaxy types. By taking the three most significant components, we find that we can describe the whole sample without contamination from noise. We produce a catalogue of eigen-coefficients and template spectra that will be part of future VIPERS data releases. Our templates effectively condense the spectral information into two coefficients that can be related to the age and star formation rate of the galaxies. Abstract

We study the phase transition of a real scalar phi^4 theory in the two-loop Phi-derivable approximation using the imaginary time formalism, extending our previous (analytical) discussion of the Hartree approximation. We combine Fast Fourier Transform algorithms and accelerated Matsubara sums in order to achieve a high accuracy. Our results confirm and complete earlier ones obtained in the real time formalism [1] but which were less accurate due to the integration in Minkowski space and the discretization of the spectral density function. We also provide a complete and explicit discussion of the renormalization of the two-loop Phi-derivable approximation at finite temperature, both in the symmetric and in the broken phase, which was already used in the real-time approach, but never published. Our main result is that the two-loop Phi-derivable approximation suffices to cure the problem of the Hartree approximation regarding the order of the transition: the transition is of the second order type, as expected on general grounds. The corresponding critical exponents are, however, of the mean-field type. Using a "RG-improved" version of the approximation, motivated by our renormalization procedure, we find that the exponents are modified. In particular, the exponent delta, which relates the field expectation value phi to an external field h, changes from 3 to 5, getting then closer to its expected value 4.789, obtained from accurate numerical estimates [2]., 54 pages, 16 figures

Abstract

International audience; Transposable elements play a fundamental role in genome evolution. It is proposed that their mobility, activated under stress, induces mutations that could confer advantages to the host organism. Transcription of the Ty1 LTR-retrotransposon of Saccharomyces cerevisiae is activated in response to a severe deficiency in adenylic nucleotides. Here, we show that Ty2 and Ty3 are also stimulated under these stress conditions, revealing the simultaneous activation of three active Ty retrotransposon families. We demonstrate that Ty1 activation in response to adenylic nucleotide depletion requires the DNA-binding transcription factor Tye7. Ty1 is transcribed in both sense and antisense directions. We identify three Tye7 potential binding sites in the region of Ty1 DNA sequence where antisense transcription starts. We show that Tye7 binds to Ty1 DNA and regulates Ty1 antisense transcription. Altogether, our data suggest that, in response to adenylic nucleotide reduction, TYE7 is induced and activates Ty1 mRNA transcription, possibly by controlling Ty1 antisense transcription. We also provide the first evidence that Ty1 antisense transcription can be regulated by environmental stress conditions, pointing to a new level of control of Ty1 activity by stress, as Ty1 antisense RNAs play an important role in regulating Ty1 mobility at both the transcriptional and post-transcriptional stages.

Abstract

Using two methods, via fluctuations and correlations, an analytical formula is derived for the factorial multiplicity moments in a QCD jet at the Double Leading Logarithm accuracy. The resulting self-similar dependence on the solid-angle cell size is characteristic of an intermittency behaviour in angular variables. The intermittency indices depend on the diffusion angle through the running of $ \alpha_ s. $ Physical features of jet fluctuations such as collimation at large angles and saturation at small angles are well described in the perturbative framework. A parameter-free prediction of angular intermittency is proposed for $ {\cal Z}^0 $ decays into hadrons, assuming hadron-parton duality., Dans cet article, les auteurs généralisent des résultats obtenus dans l'approximation planaire de QCD. A l'approximation du double logarithme dominant, ils montrent que les variables caractéristiques d'un comportement intermittent sont les variables angulaires des partons au lieu des rapidités dans le cas précédent. Cette analyse tient compte de la variation de la constante de couplage en QCD qui se manifeste par la saturation de l'effet pour les petits angles. Abstract

International audience; Polarisation of light is a key observable to provide information about asymmetry or anisotropy within a radiative source. Following the pioneering and controversial work of Duncan in 1959, the polarisation of auroral emission lines in the Earth's upper atmosphere has been overlooked for a long time, even though the red intense auroral line (6300Å) produced by collisional impacts with electrons precipitating along magnetic field lines is a good candidate to search for polarisation. This problem was investigated again by Lilensten et al (2006) and observations were obtained by Lilensten et al (2008) confirming that the red auroral emission line is polarised. More recent measurements obtained by Barthélemy et al (2011) are presented and discussed. The results are compared to predictions of the theoretical work of Bommier et al (2011) and are in good agreement. Following these encouraging results, a new dedicated spectropolarimeter is currently under construction between BIRA-IASB and IPAG to provide simultaneously the polarisation of the red line and of other interesting auroral emission lines such as N2+ 1NG (4278Å), other N2 bands, etc... Perspectives regarding the theoretical polarisation of some of these lines will be presented. The importance of these polarisation measurements in the framework of atmospheric modeling and geomagnetic activity will be discussed.

We revisit the renormalization of Phi-derivable approximations from a slightly different point of view than the one which is usually followed in previous works. We pay particular attention to the question of the existence of a solution to the self-consistent equation that defines the two-point function in the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis formalism and to the fact that some of the ultraviolet divergences which appear if one formally expands the solution in powers of the bare coupling do not always appear as divergences at the level of the solution itself. Abstract

International audience; We present an extension of the self-consistent mean field theory for protein side-chain modeling in which solvation effects are included based on the Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) theory. In this approach, the protein is represented with multiple copies of its side chains. Each copy is assigned a weight that is refined iteratively based on the mean field energy generated by the rest of the protein, until self-consistency is reached. At each cycle, the variational free energy of the multi-copy system is computed; this free energy includes the internal energy of the protein that accounts for vdW and electrostatics interactions and a solvation free energy term that is computed using the PB equation. The method converges in only a few cycles and takes only minutes of central processing unit time on a commodity personal computer. The predicted conformation of each residue is then set to be its copy with the highest weight after convergence. We have tested this method on a database of hundred highly refined NMR structures to circumvent the problems of crystal packing inherent to x-ray structures. The use of the PB-derived solvation free energy significantly improves prediction accuracy for surface side chains. For example, the prediction accuracies for χ(1) for surface cysteine, serine, and threonine residues improve from 68%, 35%, and 43% to 80%, 53%, and 57%, respectively. A comparison with other side-chain prediction algorithms demonstrates that our approach is consistently better in predicting the conformations of exposed side chains.

We study the effective potential of a real scalar phi^4 theory as a function of the temperature T within the simplest Phi-derivable approximation, namely the Hartree approximation. We apply renormalization at a "high" temperature T* where the theory is required to be in its symmetric phase and study how the effective potential evolves as the temperature is lowered down to T=0. In particular, we prove analytically that no second order phase transition can occur in this particular approximation of the theory, in agreement with earlier studies based on the numerical evaluation or the high temperature expansion of the effective potential. 57 pages, gz-compressed ps-file; International audience; The scaling properties of self-avoiding tethered membranes at the tricritical point (theta-point) are studied by perturbative renormalization group methods. To treat the 3-body repulsive interaction (known to be relevant for polymers), new analytical and numerical tools are developped and applied to 1-loop calculations. These technics are a prerequisite to higher order calculations for self-avoiding membranes. The cross-over between the 3-body interaction and the modified 2-body interaction, attractive at long range, is studied through a new double epsilon-expansion. It is shown that the latter interaction is relevant for 2-dimensional membranes at the theta-point.

URL: http://www-spht.cea.fr/articles/T93/030; International audience; A variational method is proposed to evaluate the generating functional $ \varphi $ which gives the multi-time correlation functions in equilibrium and non-equilibrium statistical mechanics or field theories. Its definition, $ \varphi = {\rm ln\ Tr} \ D\ A, $ involves the density operator $ D $ describing the initial state and an operator $ A $ depending on the observables of interest (in the Heisenberg picture), on the associated time-dependent sources and on the initial time. Regarded as function of this time, $ A $ is specified by a simple differential equation with the time running backward. Lagrangian multipliers are introduced to account both for this equation and for the one which characterizes $ D. $ Through this procedure $ \varphi $ is obtained as the stationary value of a functional depending on state-like and observable-like trial operators, with a complex time. Within a trial subspace, the resulting approximation optimizes both the initial state and the dynamics. The example of interacting fermions in many-body physics is worked out by restricting the trial objects to exponentials of single-particle operators. This leads to an extended mean-field approximation for the generating functional associated with any set of observables. Expansion in powers of the sources provides a variational approximation for the two-time causal or response functions. The result incorporates both the static and dynamic Hartree-Fock equations as well as the associated RPA equations. URL: http://www-spht.cea.fr/articles/s93/004; International audience; We consider in parallel three self-similar quasiperiodic tilings of the plane with eight-fold symmetry, made of two prototiles, the square and the 45-degree rhomb. They possess the same inflation rules up to a reordering of the tiles. We study the consequences of this reordering on the nature of the atomic surfaces, or acceptance domains, and on the Fourier spectra of the tilings. For two of the tilings the atomic surface has a fractal boundary. For one of them it is not a connected set. We argue that the situation described in this paper is generic. Nous considérons en parallèle trois pavages quasipériodiques auto-similaires du plan, de symétrie de rotation d'ordre huit, et constitués des deux mêmes tuiles: le carré et le losange à 45 degrés. Les trois pavages sont décrits par les mêmes règles d'inflation, à une permutation des tuiles près. Nous étudions l'influence de cette permutation sur les surfaces atomiques, ou domaines d'acceptance, et sur les spectres de Fourier des pavages. Le bord de la surface atomique de deux des pavages est fractal; pour l'un d'entre eux ce bord n'est pas connexe. Les propriétés décrites sur cette famille d'exemples sont vraisemblablement génériques.

International audience; Several recent works have shown that the one-dimensional fully asymmetric exclusion model, which describes a system of particles hopping in a preferred direction with hard core interactions, can be solved exactly in the case of open boundaries. Here the authors present a new approach based on representing the weights of each configuration in the steady state as a product of noncommuting matrices. With this approach the whole solution of the problem is reduced to finding two matrices and two vectors which satisfy very simple algebraic rules. They obtain several explicit forms for these non-commuting matrices which are, in the general case, infinite-dimensional. Their approach allows exact expressions to be derived for the current and density profiles. Finally they discuss briefly two possible generalizations of their results: the problem of partially asymmetric exclusion and the case of a mixture of two kinds of particles.

We reconsider the construction of solitons by dressing transformations in the sine-Gordon model. We show that the $N$-soliton solutions are in the orbit of the vacuum, and we identify the elements in the dressing group which allow us to built the $N$-soliton solutions from the vacuum solution. The dressed $\tau$-functions can be computed in two different ways~: either using adjoint actions in the affine Lie algebra $\hat {sl_2}$, and this gives the relation with the B\"acklund transformations, or using the level one representations of the affine Lie algebra $\widehat{sl_2}$, and this directly gives the formulae for the $\tau$-functions in terms of vertex operators., Comment: 33 pages. Abstract

Cluster dynamical mean-field calculations based on 2-, 4-, 8-, and 16-site clusters are used to analyze the doping-driven metal-insulator transition in the two-dimensional Hubbard model. Comparison of results obtained on different clusters enables a determination of those aspects of the physics that are common to all clusters and permits identification of artifacts associated with particular cluster geometries. A modest particle-hole asymmetry in the underlying band structure is shown to lead to qualitatively different behavior on the hole-doped side than on the electron-doped side. For particle-hole asymmetry of the sign and magnitude appropriate to high-${T}_{c}$ cuprates, the approach to the insulator from the hole-doping side is found to proceed in two stages from a high-doping region where the properties are those of a Fermi liquid with moderately renormalized parameters and very weak momentum dependence. As doping is reduced the system first enters an intermediate doping regime where the Fermi-liquid renormalizations are larger and the electron self-energy varies significantly around the Fermi surface and then passes to a small doping regime characterized by a gap on some parts of the Fermi surface but gapless behavior in other parts. On the electron-doped side the partially gapped regime does not occur, and the momentum dependence of the electron self-energy is less pronounced. Implications for the high-${T}_{c}$ cuprates and for the use of cluster dynamical mean-field methods in wider classes of problems are discussed.

Abstract

We present calculations of the interplane charge dynamics in the normal state of cuprate superconductors within the valence-bond dynamical mean-field theory. We show that by varying the hole doping, the c-axis optical conductivity and resistivity dramatically change character, going from metallic-like at large doping to insulating-like at low-doping. We establish a clear connection between the behavior of the c-axis optical and transport properties and the destruction of coherent quasiparticles as the pseudogap opens in the antinodal region of the Brillouin zone at low doping. We show that our results are in good agreement with spectroscopic and optical experiments., 5 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

We study the doubly virtual Compton scattering off a spinless target $\gamma^*P\to\gamma^*P'$ within the Anti-de Sitter(AdS)/QCD formalism. We find that the general structure allowed by the Lorentz invariance and gauge invariance of the Compton amplitude is not easily reproduced with the standard recipes of the AdS/QCD correspondence. In the soft-photon regime, where the semi-classical approximation is supposed to apply best, we show that the measurements of the electric and magnetic polarizabilities of a target like the charged pion in real Compton scattering, can already serve as stringent tests., Comment: 21 pages, version to be published in JHEP.

Abstract

International audience; Cross-sections and analyzing powers data obtained by inelastic scattering of 800 MeV polarized protons from severals-d shell nuclei have been analyzed using the Dirac coupled-channel (CC) formalism putting emphasis in the precise determination of higher order deformation in these nuclei. The superiority of the Dirac formalism compared to the classical Schrödinger CC calculations in the analysis of these data was once more clearly established. The higher order deformations obtained through these calculations are compared to those obtained using the classical Schrödinger equation.

We show that the boundary conditions imposed on the director fluctuations in nematics by the presence of rigid walls give rise to long-range forces analogous to the Casimir effect in electrodynamics. We discuss different calculational schemes for the derivation of this results. We derive the spatial behavior of this interaction for smectics and columnar phases in different geometries.

Abstract

In this article, we solve the loop equations of the \beta-random matrix model, in a way similar to what was found for the case of hermitian matrices \beta=1. For \beta=1, the solution was expressed in terms of algebraic geometry properties of an algebraic spectral curve of equation y^2=U(x). For arbitrary \beta, the spectral curve is no longer algebraic, it is a Schroedinger equation ((\hbar\partial)^2-U(x)).\psi(x)=0 where \hbar\propto (\sqrt\beta-1/\sqrt\beta). In this article, we find a solution of loop equations, which takes the same form as the topological recursion found for \beta=1. This allows to define natural generalizations of all algebraic geometry properties, like the notions of genus, cycles, forms of 1st, 2nd and 3rd kind, Riemann bilinear identities, and spectral invariants F_g, for a quantum spectral curve, i.e. a D-module of the form y^2-U(x), where [y,x]=\hbar. Abstract

We consider the excursions, i.e. the intervals between consecutive zeros, of stochastic processes that arise in a variety of nonequilibrium systems and study the temporal growth of the longest one l_{\max}(t) up to time t. For smooth processes, we find a universal linear growth < l_{\max}(t) > \simeq Q_{\infty} t with a model dependent amplitude Q_\infty. In contrast, for non-smooth processes with a persistence exponent \theta, we show that < l_{\max}(t) > has a linear growth if \theta < \theta_c while < l_{\max}(t) > \sim t^{1-\psi} if \theta > \theta_c. The amplitude Q_{\infty} and the exponent \psi are novel quantities associated to nonequilibrium dynamics. These behaviors are obtained by exact analytical calculations for renewal and multiplicative processes and numerical simulations for other systems such as the coarsening dynamics in Ising model as well as the diffusion equation with random initial conditions., Comment: 4 pages,2 figures

Abstract

International audience; We present an extension to the Poisson-Boltzmann model in which the solvent is modeled as an assembly of self-orienting dipoles of variable densities. Interactions between these dipoles are included implicitly using a Yukawa potential field. This model leads to a set of equations whose solutions give the dipole densities; we use the latter to study the organization of water around biomolecules. The computed water density profiles resemble those derived from molecular dynamics simulations. We also derive an excess free energy that discriminates correct from incorrect conformations of proteins.

PosterEdytem equipe 1 2003-2010Poster; Les milieux d'altitude étant très sensibles aux variations du climat, on peut se demander quelles sont les conséquences du réchauffement climatique sur ces environnements. Les sédiments lacustres constituent une archive particulièrement intéressante pour répondre à ce type de problématiques. Cependant, ils enregistrent aussi les changements environnementaux, autrement dit les changements dans l'état du bassin versant qui ne sont pas nécessairement liés au climat mais parfois à l'occupation humaine. Les analyses qualitatives et quantitatives de la matière organique (MO) présentent un intérêt car elles peuvent être utilisées pour reconstituer les changements environnementaux et donc pour mieux interpréter nos enregistrements sédimentaires en termes de climat. L'enregistrement sédimentaire du Lac d'Anterne (Alpes du Nord occidental) fait l'objet d'une étude multi-paramètre (sédimentologie, géochimie minérale et organique). Parmi ces paramètres l'évolution de la matière organique a été reconstituée par différentes méthodes (Pyrolyse Rock Eval ; C, H, N et spectroscopie infrarouge (IR)) afin de mettre en évidence et d'expliquer des changements environnementaux ayant eu lieu au cours de l'Holocène. Pour cela une approche source/puits a été mise en oeuvre. Une étude spatiale a permis de caractériser la MO des différents types de sols du bassin versant. Ces résultats ont été ensuite utilisés pour interpréter l'évolution de la matière organique piégée dans les sédiments d'une carotte lacustre de 20 m couvrant la majeure partie de l'Holocène. La description lithologique de la carotte a permis de mettre en évidence trois unités principales : une unité supérieure pauvre en MO (0- 4000 cal. BP), une unité intermédiaire riche en MO (4000-8400 cal. BP) et une unité basale à nouveau pauvre en MO (8400- >9000 cal. BP). Au tout début de l'Holocène, la pyrolyse rock eval montre une proportion importante de matière organique fossile difficilement dégradable (provenant des terres noires du bassin versant). L'augmentation du COT dans l'unité intermédiaire traduit principalement des apports de MO issue des végétaux supérieurs, traduisant une végétalisation progressive (1500 ans) du bassin versant. A partir de 4000 cal BP on note une importante dilution de la MO par les apports détritiques sans changement notable de la contribution de la MO fossile. Les changements environnementaux ainsi décrit correspondent aux observations palynologiques effectuées sur différentes séries de tourbe du massif Pormenaz-Anterne.

Abstract

We determine the volume and mass dependence of scalar and pseudoscalar two-point functions in N_f-flavour QCD, in the presence of an isospin chemical potential and at fixed gauge-field topology. We obtain these results at second order in the \epsilon-expansion of Chiral Perturbation Theory and evaluate all relevant zero-mode group integrals analytically. The virtue of working with a non-vanishing chemical potential is that it provides the correlation functions with a dependence on both the chiral condensate, \Sigma, and the pion decay constant, F, already at leading order. Our results may therefore be useful for improving the determination of these constants from lattice QCD calculations. As a side product, we rectify an earlier calculation of the O(\epsilon^2) finite-volume correction to the decay constant appearing in the partition function. We consider the initial value problem and its renormalisation in the framework of the two-particle-irreducible (2PI) effective action. We argue that in the case of appropriately chosen self-consistent initial conditions, the counterterms needed to renormalise the system in equilibrium are also sufficient to renormalise its time evolution. Abstract

We discuss the renormalisation of the initial value problem in quantum field theory using the two-particle irreducible (2PI) effective action formalism. The nonequilibrium dynamics is renormalised by counterterms determined in equilibrium. We emphasize the importance of the appropriate choice of initial conditions and go beyond the Gaussian initial density operator by defining self-consistent initial conditions. We study the corresponding time evolution and present a numerical example which supports the existence of a continuum limit for this type of initial conditions., 18 pages in revtex4, 5 figures

Abstract

We show that in gauge mediation models where heavy messenger masses are provided by the adjoint Higgs field of an underlying SU(5) theory, a generalized gauge mediation spectrum arises with the characteristic feature of having a neutralino LSP much lighter than in the standard gauge or gravity mediation schemes. This naturally fits in a hybrid scenario where gravity mediation, while subdominant with respect to gauge mediation, provides mu and Bmu parameters of the appropriate size for electroweak symmetry breaking., Comment: 32 pages. v2: revised discussions of the generation of Bmu and of the dark matter constraint; numerous small redactional changes; remarks and references added

Abstract

A superglass is a phase of matter which is characterized at the same time by superfluidity and a frozen amorphous structure. We introduce a model of interacting bosons in three dimensions that displays this phase unambiguously and that can be analyzed exactly or using controlled approximations. Employing a mapping between quantum Hamiltonians and classical Fokker-Planck operators, we show that the ground state wavefunction of the quantum model is proportional to the Boltzmann measure of classical hard spheres. This connection allows us to obtain quantitative results on static and dynamic quantum correlation functions. In particular, by translating known results on the glassy dynamics of Brownian hard spheres we work out the properties of the superglass phase and of the quantum phase transition between the superfluid and the superglass phase., 23 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

We introduce a valence-bond dynamical mean-field theory of doped Mott insulators. It is based on a minimal cluster of two orbitals, each associated with a different region of momentum space and hybridized to a self-consistent bath. The low-doping regime is characterized by singlet formation and the suppression of quasiparticles in the antinodal regions, leading to the formation of Fermi arcs. This is described in terms of an orbital-selective transition in reciprocal space. The calculated tunneling and photoemission spectra are consistent with the phenomenology of the normal state of cuprates. We derive a low-energy description of these effects using a generalization of the slave-boson method., 4+ pages, 4 figures

We solve the loop equations to all orders in $1/N^2$, for the Chain of Matrices matrix model (with possibly an external field coupled to the last matrix of the chain). We show that the topological expansion of the free energy, is, like for the 1 and 2-matrix model, given by the symplectic invariants of the associated spectral curve. As a consequence, we find the double scaling limit explicitly, and we discuss modular properties, large $N$ asymptotics.
