Dermatological diseases, such as neurofibroma (Recklinghausen disease) or hemangiomas can be efficiently treated using photothermolysis from laser irradiation. We have utilized a developed 975 nm fiber diode laser as a low-cost alternative over common Nd:YAG lasers. This paper describes the investigations of interaction of 975 nm diode laser radiation-pulses with optical skin phantoms which were designed and manufactured in our laboratory. Such phantoms match the scattering and absorption coefficients of real human skin. Spatial and temporal temperature evolutions during laser irradiation with various laser settings (pulsed and CW mode), were recorded by an IR camera. Subsequent analysis yielded optimum choice of parameters for laser therapy of coetaneous lesions.

Η διατριβή αυτή επικεντρώνεται στη μελέτη της χωρικής και χρονικής εξέλιξης της δυναμικής των φορέων σε χρονικές κλίμακες μερικών femtoseconds χρησιμοποιώντας τεχνικές διέγερσης-ανίχνευσης. Είναι γνωστό ότι η ιοντική εμφύτευση (implantation) δημιουργεί ατέλειες στο κρυσταλλικό πλέγμα και εισάγει επιπλέον κέντρα επανασύνδεσης για τους φορείς του υλικού. Ταυτόχρονα, η θερμική ανόπτυση (annealing) βοηθάει στην επαναφορά του υλικού στην αρχική του μορφή. Η συγκεκριμένη έρευνα εστιάζεται στη μελέτη της αλλαγής της ανακλαστικότητας και διέλευσης κάτω από διέγερση υπερταχέων παλμών laser. Οι μετρήσεις αναλύονται με τη χρήση κατάλληλου μοντέλου συζευγμένων εξισώσεων διάχυσης και παράμετροι κλειδιά που αφορούν τη δυναμική των φορέων και τις οπτικές και δομικές ιδιότητες του υλικού αυτού εξάγονται. Η δυναμική των φορέων μελετάται σε ένα μεγάλο εύρος ενεργειών ανίχνευσης και φαινόμενα αλληλεπίδρασης φορέων-φορέων αλλά και φορέων-πλέγματος αναλύονται. Τέλος, με την αύξηση των απαιτήσεων για όλο και μικρότερες διαστάσεις υλικών η μελέτη μας επικεντρώνεται στην αλλαγή της δυναμικής των φορέων μειώνοντας τις διαστάσεις του υλικού σε μερικά nanometers. Η χρονική εξέλιξη της απορρόφησης στο εσωτερικό των νανοκρυσταλλιτών επιβεβαιώνει θεωρητικές προβλέψεις που αφορούν την ύπαρξη κβαντικοί επιφανειακών καταστάσεων και κβαντικού περιορισμού. In this dissertation we report on femtosecond time-resolved measurements of the polycrystalline silicon samples. Ion implantation of dopant atoms into silicon generates non equilibrium levels of crystal defects that can lead to the detrimental effects of transient enhanced diffusion, incomplete dopant activation, and p-n junction leakage. In order to control all these effects, it is vital to have a clear understanding of ultrafast carrier dynamics (trapping time, diffusion coefficient and absorption coefficient) inside this material. This research focuses on the transient differential reflectivity and transmittance measurements and analyzes the results using a coupled diffusion equation model. Subsequent annealing recovers the periodicity obtaining a long-range ordering. The dielectric functions of this material upon implantation and annealing have been extracted using spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements. The effects of implantation and annealing on diffusion coefficient, absorption coefficient and captured times from the traps at different probing wavelength (using a super continuum source) have been studied. High fluence excitation measurements have been performed for implanted and annealed samples. Auger coefficient of highly implanted and annealed polycrystalline silicon sample has been found. The carrier dynamics of this material have been extensively studied as a function of the thickness of polycrystalline silicon layer. The transient induced absorption of ultrathin implanted and annealed polycrystalline silicon samples at different probing wavelengths reveals the free carrier absorption behaviour from lower to higher states. Relaxation times and efficiency of coupling between intravaley or intervaley transitions have been discussed in details. These parameters are key contributing factors for optoelectronics applications. Implanted samples serve traps to the carriers causing faster recombination than polycrystalline silicon sample. Finally, minimizing the size of embedding nanocrystals in silicon dioxide matrix, the induced absorption behaviour is consistent with quantum confinement theory and recently considerations of surface deformation states and the interior of silicon nanocrystals due to the embedding.
