We use fast coherent reflectivity measurements, in a strongly-coupled quantum dot-micropillar device, to monitor in real-time single-charge jumps at the microsecond timescale. Thanks to the strong enhancement of light-matter interaction inside the cavity, the measurement rate is five orders of magnitude faster than with previous experiments of direct single-charge sensing with quantum dots. The monitored transitions, identified at any given time with a less than 0.2% error probability, correspond to a carrier being captured and then released by a single material defect. This high-speed technique opens the way for the real-time monitoring of other rapid single quantum events, such as the quantum jumps of a single spin., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

We demonstrate unambiguous entangling operation of a photonic quantum-logic gate driven by an ultrabright solid-state single-photon source. Indistinguishable single photons emitted by a single semiconductor quantum dot in a micropillar optical cavity are used as target and control qubits. For a source brightness of 0.56 collected photons-per-pulse, the measured truth table has an overlap with the ideal case of 68.4%, increasing to 73.0% for a source brightness of 0.17 photons- per-pulse. The gate is entangling: at a source brightness of 0.48, the Bell-state fidelity is above the entangling threshold of 50%, and reaches 71.0% for a source brightness of 0.15.

With the growing success of the social Web, most Web developers have to interact with at least one social Web platform, which implies studying the related API specifications. These are often only informally described, may contain errors, lack harmonization, and generally speaking make the developer's work difficult. Most attempts to solve this problem, proposing formal description languages for Web service APIs, have had limited success outside of B2B applications; we believe it is due to their top-down nature. In addition, a programmer dealing with one or several of these APIs has to deal with a number of related tasks such as data integration, requests chaining, or policy management, that are cumbersome to implement. Inspired by the SPORE project, we present API Blender, an open-source solution to describe, interact with, and integrate the most common social Web APIs. In this perspective, we first introduce two new lightweight description formats for requests and services and demonstrate their relevance with respect to current platform APIs. The dynamics of propagating polariton condensates in one-dimensional microcavities is investigated through time resolved experiments. We find a strong increase in the condensate intensity when it travels through the non-resonantly excited area. This amplification is shown to come from bosonic stimulated relaxation of reservoir excitons into the polariton condensate, allowing for the repopulation of the condensate through non-resonant pumping. Thus, we experimentally demonstrate a polariton amplifier with a large band width, opening the way towards the transport of polaritons with high densities over macroscopic distances., Comment: 5 pages + Supplementary

We experimentally demonstrate the control of the spontaneous emission rate and the radiation pattern of colloidal quantum dots deterministically positioned in a plasmonic patch antenna. The antenna consists of a thin gold microdisk 30 nm above a thick gold layer. The emitters are shown to radiate through the entire patch antenna in a highly directional and vertical radiation pattern. Strong acceleration of spontaneous emission is observed, depending of the antenna size. Considering the double dipole structure of the emitters, this corresponds to a Purcell factor up to 80 for dipoles perpendicular to the disk.

Giant optical nonlinearity is observed under both continuous-wave and pulsed excitation in a deterministically-coupled quantum dot-micropillar system, in a pronounced strong-coupling regime. Using absolute reflectivity measurements we determine the critical intracavity photon number as well as the input and output coupling efficiencies of the device. Thanks to a near-unity input-coupling efficiency, we demonstrate a record nonlinearity threshold of only 8 incident photons per pulse. The output-coupling efficiency is found to strongly influence this nonlinearity threshold. We show how the fundamental limit of single-photon nonlinearity can be attained in realistic devices, which would provide an effective interaction between two coincident single photons., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. GaAs disk resonators (typical disk size 5 \mum * 200 nm in our work) are good candidates for boosting optomechanical coupling thanks to their ability to confine both optical and mechanical energy in a sub-micron interaction volume. We present results of optomechanical characterization of GaAs disks by near-field optical coupling from a tapered silica nano-waveguide. Whispering gallery modes with optical Q factor up to a few 10^5 are observed. Critical coupling, optical resonance doublet splitting and mode identification are discussed. We eventually show an optomechanical phenomenon of optical force attraction of the silica taper to the disk. This phenomenon shows that mechanical and optical degrees of freedom naturally couple at the micro-nanoscale.

We report on miniature GaAs disk optomechanical resonators vibrating in air in the radiofrequency range. The flexural modes of the disks are studied by scanning electron microscopy and optical interferometry, and correctly modeled with the elasticity theory for annular plates. The mechanical damping is systematically measured, and confronted with original analytical models for air damping. Formulas are derived that correctly reproduce both the mechanical modes and the damping behavior, and can serve as design tools for optomechanical applications in fluidic environment.

One of the main challenges that the Semantic Web faces is the integration of a growing number of independently designed ontologies. In this work, we present PARIS, an approach for the automatic alignment of ontologies. PARIS aligns not only instances, but also relations and classes. Alignments at the instance level cross-fertilize with alignments at the schema level. Thereby, our system provides a truly holistic solution to the problem of ontology alignment. The heart of the approach is probabilistic, i.e., we measure degrees of matchings based on probability estimates. This allows PARIS to run without any parameter tuning. We demonstrate the efficiency of the algorithm and its precision through extensive experiments. We report on polariton condensation in photonic molecules formed by two coupled micropillars. We show that the condensation process is strongly affected by the interaction with the cloud of uncondensed excitons. Depending on the spatial position of these excitons within the molecule, condensation can be triggered on both binding and anti-binding polariton states of the molecule, on a metastable state or a total transfer of the condensate into one of the micropillars can be obtained. We investigate the effects of disorder on the propagation of one-dimensional polariton condensates in semiconductor microcavities. We observe a strong suppression of the backscattering produced by the imperfections of the structure when increasing the condensate density. This suppression occurs in the supersonic regime and is simultaneous to the onset of parametric instabilities which enable the "hopping" of the condensate through the disorder. Our results evidence a new mechanism for the frictionless flow of polaritons at high speeds., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Decoherence caused by nuclear field fluctuations is a fundamental obstacle to the realization of quantum information processing using single electron spins. Alternative proposals have been made to use spin qubits based on valence band holes having weaker hyperfine coupling. However, it was demonstrated recently both theoretically and experimentally that the hole hyperfine interaction is not negligible, although a consistent picture of the mechanism controlling the magnitude of the hole-nuclear coupling is still lacking. Here we address this problem by performing isotope selective measurement of the valence band hyperfine coupling in InGaAs/GaAs, InP/GaInP and GaAs/AlGaAs quantum dots. Contrary to existing models we find that the hole hyperfine constant along the growth direction of the structure (normalized by the electron hyperfine constant) has opposite signs for different isotopes and ranges from -15% to +15%. We attribute such changes in hole hyperfine constants to the competing positive contributions of p-symmetry atomic orbitals and the negative contributions of d-orbitals. Furthermore, we find that the d-symmetry contribution leads to a new mechanism for hole-nuclear spin flips which may play an important role in hole spin decoherence. In addition the measured hyperfine constants enable a fundamentally new approach for verification of the computed Bloch wavefunctions in the vicinity of nuclei in semiconductor nanostructures.

In this paper, we present the guidelines for an XML-based approach for the sociological study of Web data such as the analysis of mailing lists or databases available online. The use of an XML warehouse is a flexible solution for storing and processing this kind of data. We propose an implemented solution and show possible applications with our case study of profiles of experts involved in W3C standard-setting activity. We illustrate the sociological use of semi-structured databases by presenting our XML Schema for mailing-list warehousing. An XML Schema allows many adjunctions or crossings of data sources, without modifying existing data sets, while allowing possible structural evolution. We also show that the existence of hidden data implies increased complexity for traditional SQL users. XML content warehousing allows altogether exhaustive warehousing and recursive queries through contents, with far less dependence on the initial storage. We finally present the possibility of exporting the data stored in the warehouse to commonly-used advanced software devoted to sociological analysis.

We report on an integrated GaAs disk/waveguide system. A millimeter-long waveguide is suspended and tapered on the chip over a length of 25 {\mu}m to evanescently couple to high Q optical whispering gallery modes of a GaAs disk. The critical coupling regime is obtained both by varying the disk/guide gap distance and the width of the suspended nanoscale taper. We demonstrate strong confinement of the optical field by depositing a micron sized metallic disk on a planar interferential mirror. Zero dimensional Tamm plasmon modes are evidenced both experimentally and theoretically, with a lateral confinement limited to the disk area and strong coupling to TE polarized fields. Single quantum dots deterministically coupled to these modes are shown to experience acceleration of their spontaneous emission when spectrally resonant with the mode. For quantum dots spectrally detuned from the confined Tamm Plasmon mode, an inhibition of spontaneous emission by a factor 40 is observed, a record value in the optical domain.

The World Wide Web no longer consists just of HTML pages. Our work sheds light on a number of trends on the Internet that go beyond simple Web pages. The hidden Web provides a wealth of data in semi-structured form, accessible through Web forms and Web services. These services, as well as numerous other applications on the Web, commonly use XML, the eXtensible Markup Language. XML has become the lingua franca of the Internet that allows customized markups to be defined for specific domains. On top of XML, the Semantic Web grows as a common structured data source. In this work, we first explain each of these developments in detail. Using real-world examples from scientific domains of great interest today, we then demonstrate how these new developments can assist the managing, harvesting, and organization of data on the Web. On the way, we also illustrate the current research avenues in these domains. We believe that this effort would help bridge multiple database tracks, thereby attracting researchers with a view to extend database technology., Comment: EDBT - Tutorial (2011)

Consider the situation where a query is to be answered using Web sources that restrict the accesses that can be made on backend relational data by requiring some attributes to be given as input of the service. The accesses provide lookups on the collection of attributes values that match the binding. They can differ in whether or not they require arguments to be generated from prior accesses. Prior work has focused on the question of whether a query can be answered using a set of data sources, and in developing static access plans (e.g., Datalog programs) that implement query answering. We are interested in dynamic aspects of the query answering problem: given partial information about the data, which accesses could provide relevant data for answering a given query? We consider immediate and long-term notions of "relevant accesses", and ascertain the complexity of query relevance, for both conjunctive queries and arbitrary positive queries. In the process, we relate dynamic relevance of an access to query containment under access limitations and characterize the complexity of this problem; we produce several complexity results about containment that are of interest by themselves.

Highly polarized nuclear spins within a semiconductor quantum dot (QD) induce effective magnetic (Overhauser) fields of up to several Tesla acting on the electron spin or up to a few hundred mT for the hole spin. Recently this has been recognized as a resource for intrinsic control of QD-based spin quantum bits. However, only static long-lived Overhauser fields could be used. Here we demonstrate fast redirection on the microsecond time-scale of Overhauser fields of the order of 0.5 T experienced by a single electron spin in an optically pumped GaAs quantum dot. This has been achieved using full coherent control of an ensemble of 10^3-10^4 optically polarized nuclear spins by sequences of short radio-frequency (rf) pulses. These results open the way to a new class of experiments using rf techniques to achieve highly-correlated nuclear spins in quantum dots, such as adiabatic demagnetization in the rotating frame leading to sub-micro K nuclear spin temperatures, rapid adiabatic passage, and spin squeezing.

We report on wavelength-sized GaAs optomechanical disk resonators showing ultra-strong optomechanical interaction. We observe optical transduction of a disk mechanical breathing mode with 1.4 GHz frequency and effective mass of ~ 2 pg. The measured vacuum optomechanical coupling rate reaches 0.8 MHz, with a related differential optomechanical coupling factor of 485 GHz/nm. We report on the coherent reflection spectroscopy of a high-quality factor micropillar, in the strong coupling regime with a single InGaAs annealed quantum dot. The absolute reflectivity measurement is used to study the characteristics of our device at low and high excitation power. The strong coupling is obtained with a g=16 \mueV coupling strength in a 7.3\mum diameter micropillar, with a cavity spectral width kappa=20.5 \mueV (Q=65 000). The factor of merit of the strong-coupling regime, 4g/kappa=3, is the current state-of-the-art for a quantum dot-micropillar system.

We propose a technique to initialize an electron spin in a semiconductor quantum dot with a single short optical pulse. It relies on the fast depletion of the initial spin state followed by a preferential, Purcell-accelerated desexcitation towards the desired state thanks to a micropillar cavity. We theoretically discuss the limits on initialization rate and fidelity, and derive the pulse area for optimal initialization. We show that spin initialization is possible using a single optical pulse down to a few tens of picoseconds wide.

Optomechanical coupling between a mechanical oscillator and light trapped in a cavity increases when the coupling takes place in a reduced volume. Here we demonstrate a GaAs semiconductor optomechanical disk system where both optical and mechanical energy can be confined in a sub-micron scale interaction volume. We observe giant optomechanical coupling rate up to 100 GHz/nm involving picogram mass mechanical modes with frequency between 100 MHz and 1 GHz. The mechanical modes are singled-out measuring their dispersion as a function of disk geometry. Their Brownian motion is optically resolved with a sensitivity of 10^(-17)m/sqrt(Hz) at room temperature and pressure, approaching the quantum limit imprecision., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Cavity exciton-polaritons (polaritons) are bosonic quasi-particles offering a unique solid-state system to investigate interacting condensates. Up to now, disorder induced localization and short lifetimes have prevented the establishment of long range off diagonal order needed for any quantum manipulation of the condensate wavefunction. In this work, using a wire microcavity with polariton lifetimes ten times longer than in all previously existing samples, we show that polariton condensates can propagate over macroscopic distances outside the excitation area, while preserving their spontaneous spatial coherence. An extended condensate wave-function builds-up with a degree of spatial coherence larger than 50% over distances 50 times the polariton De Broglie wavelength. The expansion of the condensate is shown to be governed by the repulsive potential induced by photo-generated excitons within the excitation area. The control of this local potential offers a new and versatile method to manipulate extended polariton condensates. In this paper we present the state of advancement of the French ANR WebStand project. The objective of this project is to construct a customizable XML based warehouse platform to acquire, transform, analyze, store, query and export data from the web, in particular mailing lists, with the final intension of using this data to perform sociological studies focused on social groups of World Wide Web, with a specific emphasis on the temporal aspects of this data. We are currently using this system to analyze the standardization process of the W3C, through its social network of standard setters.

We report optically detected nuclear magnetic resonance (ODNMR) measurements on small ensembles of nuclear spins in single GaAs quantum dots. Using ODNMR we make direct measurements of the inhomogeneous Knight field from a photo-excited electron which acts on the nuclei in the dot. The resulting shifts of the NMR peak can be optically controlled by varying the electron occupancy and its spin orientation, and lead to strongly asymmetric lineshapes at high optical excitation. The all-optical control of the NMR lineshape will enable position-selective control of small groups of nuclear spins in a dot. Our calculations also show that the asymmetric NMR peak lineshapes can provide information on the volume of the electron wave-function, and may be used for measurements of non-uniform distributions of atoms in nano-structures., Comment: submitted to PRL

We observe spontaneously driven non-ground state polariton condensation in GaAs pillar microcavities under non-resonant optical excitation. We identify a regime where the interplay of exciton-exciton and pair polariton scattering can lead to mode switching from non-ground state to ground state polariton condensation. A simple kinematic model satisfactorily describes the observed mode switching as each of the above scattering mechanisms becomes prevalent at different carrier densities., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

The light emission rate of a single quantum dot can be drastically enhanced by embedding it in a resonant semiconductor microcavity. This phenomenon is known as the Purcell effect, and the coupling strength between emitter and cavity can be quantified by the Purcell factor. The most natural way for probing the Purcell effect is a time-resolved measurement. However, this approach is not always the most convenient one, and alternative approaches based on a continuous-wave measurement are often more appropriate. Various signatures of the Purcell effect can indeed be observed using continuous-wave measurements (increase of the pump rate needed to saturate the quantum dot emission, enhancement of its emission rate at saturation, change of its radiation pattern), signatures which are encountered when a quantum dot is put on-resonance with the cavity mode. All these observations potentially allow one to estimate the Purcell factor. In this paper, we carry out these different types of measurements for a single quantum dot in a pillar microcavity and we compare their reliability. We include in the data analysis the presence of independent, non-resonant emitters in the microcavity environment, which are responsible for a part of the observed fluorescence.

The origin of the emission within the optical mode of a coupled quantum dot-micropillar system is investigated. Time-resolved photoluminescence is performed on a large number of deterministically coupled devices in a wide range of temperature and detuning. The emission within the cavity mode is found to exhibit the same dynamics as the spectrally closest quantum dot state. Our observations indicate that fast dephasing of the quantum dot state is responsible for the emission within the cavity mode. Nuclear spin polarization dynamics are measured in optically pumped individual GaAs/AlGaAs interface quantum dots by detecting the time-dependence of the Overhauser shift in photoluminescence (PL) spectra. Long nuclear polarization decay times of ~ 1 minute have been found indicating inefficient nuclear spin diffusion from the GaAs dot into the surrounding AlGaAs matrix in externally applied magnetic field. We report on a new type of optical nonlinearity in a polariton p-i-n microcavity. Abrupt switching between the strong and weak coupling regime is induced by controlling the electric field within the cavity. As a consequence bistable cycles are observed for low optical powers (2-3 orders of magnitude less than for Kerr induced bistability). Using far field optical lithography, a single quantum dot is positioned within a pillar microcavity with a 50 nm accuracy. The lithography is performed in-situ at 10 K while measuring the quantum dot emission. Deterministic spectral and spatial matching of the cavity-dot system is achieved in a single step process and evidenced by the observation of strong Purcell effect. Cavity polaritons have been shown these last years to exhibit a rich variety of non-linear behaviors which could be used in new polariton based devices. Operation in the strong coupling regime under electrical injection remains a key step toward a practical polariton device. We report here on the realization of a polariton based light emitting diode using a GaAs microcavity with doped Bragg mirrors. Polariton lasing is demonstrated on the zero dimensional states of single GaAs/GaAlAs micropillar cavities. Under non resonant excitation, the measured polariton ground state occupancy is found to be as large as $10^{4}$. Changing the spatial excitation conditions, competition between several polariton lasing modes is observed, ruling out Bose-Einstein condensation. We study experimentally the lasing regime of a GaAs based microcavity sample under strong optical pumping. The very same sample exhibits the strong coupling regime at low excitation power with a Rabi splitting as large as 15 meV. We show that some features which may be considered as experimental evidence of polariton Bose Einstein condensation are also observed in the weak coupling regime when the cavity is behaving as a regular photon laser. We report on the observation of the strong coupling regime between a single GaAs quantum dot and a microdisk optical mode. Photoluminescence is performed at various temperatures to tune the quantum dot exciton with respect to the optical mode. At resonance, we observe an anticrossing, signature of the strong coupling regime with a well resolved doublet. We introduce a concept of similarity between vertices of directed graphs. Let G_A and G_B be two directed graphs. We define a similarity matrix whose (i, j)-th real entry expresses how similar vertex j (in G_A) is to vertex i (in G_B. The similarity matrix can be obtained as the limit of the normalized even iterates of a linear transformation. In the special case where G_A=G_B=G, the matrix is square and the (i, j)-th entry is the similarity score between the vertices i and j of G. We point out that Kleinberg's "hub and authority" method to identify web-pages relevant to a given query can be viewed as a special case of our definition in the case where one of the graphs has two vertices and a unique directed edge between them. In analogy to Kleinberg, we show that our similarity scores are given by the components of a dominant eigenvector of a non-negative matrix. Potential applications of our similarity concept are numerous. We illustrate an application for the automatic extraction of synonyms in a monolingual dictionary.
