Abstract

A figure-8 undulator is installed in the soft X-ray beamline BL27SU at SPring-8 as insertion device. It provides linearly polarized light whose direction of polarization is horizontal for the integer order harmonic light and vertical for the half-integer order harmonic light. We have measured the degree of linear polarization of the monochromatic soft X-ray radiation at the end station of the beamline. Photoelectron spectra of Ne emitted in the horizontal direction are recorded for both horizontal and vertical directions of polarization, for two different settings of the front-end-slits. The degrees of linear polarization and the anisotropy parameters and branching ratios of photoelectrons are extracted in a self-consistent manner, at various photon energies. Abstract

The newly installed BL28XU beamline at SPring-8 is dedicated to in situ structural and electronic analysis of rechargeable batteries. It supports the time range (1 ms to 100 s) and spatial range (1 µm to 1 mm) needed for battery analysis. Electrochemical apparatus for battery charging and discharging are available in experimental hutches and in a preparation room. Battery analysis can be carried out efficiently and effectively using X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption fine-structure analysis and hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Abstract

Angle-resolved energetic-ion-yield spectra were observed in the region of the O 1s to Rydberg excitation of CO2 with incident photon energy resolving power E/ΔE≃14 000. The assignments of the electronic states were established in accordance with the angular distribution data. All the observed vibrational structures were assigned to the antisymmetric stretching vibrations caused by the vibronic coupling between the nearly degenerate O 1s core-excited states. A Franck-Condon analysis was performed within the linear coupling model.

134. Study of second-step Auger transitions in Auger cascades following 1s ? 3p photoexcitation in Ne

Abstract

We present the results of high-resolution measurements of the low-energy part of the Auger electron spectrum generated by photoexcitation of the 1s?13p resonance in Ne. The spectrum was measured in the energy range of 10-33 eV where mainly the electrons from the second-step Auger transitions of the cascades 1s?13p ? 2s2p5np ? 2s22p4and 1s?13p ? 2s02p6np ? 2s2p5(n= 3, 4) are detected. High resolution allows us to study the multiplet structure of the transitions and to determine the widths of the intermediate states of the Ne+ion. Anisotropy of the angular distribution of Auger electrons is determined for all of the lines observed. The results are in reasonably good agreement with MCDF calculations.

135. Spectral Simulation of the ESR Spectra of Polyphenol Radicals Formed by Reaction with Hydroxyl Radical

Abstract

ESR spectra of the short-lived radicals of catechol and gallic acid formed by reaction with hydroxyl radical (HO•) in acidic solution were measured using a dielectric mixing resonator and were compared with those formed by autoxidation in an alkaline solution. The triple triplet and triplet absorptions of catechol and gallic acid in alkaline solution showed that they were the phenoxy radicals and that the residual phenolic hydroxyl groups (φ-OH) were ionized. On the contrary, the lines were broad and unresolvable in acidic solution, suggesting that the radicals were exchanging between some limiting structures with a rate that affected the line shape. The radical is thought to be phenoxy formed by dehydrogenation with HO•, and the position of the unpaired electron can move to another φ-OH through a cationic radical structure as an intermediate. Thus, a simulation was performed assuming that the Bloch equation is applicable to some groups of the lines of the limiting structures. A method for the quantum-chemical analysis was developed, and the exchange rate and the hyperfine splitting constants were obtained from the best-fit spectra using a revised Marquardt method. The results suggest that polyphenols scavenge HO• using the φ-OHs, but it was impossible to determine which φ-OH was used from the ESR spectra because the structure was changing among a few structures.

Abstract

The vibrational structure of the O1s[-1]2b2 core-excited state of H2O is observed and ascribed to the mixture of symmetric stretching and bending motions with a1 symmetry. The formation of H2+ is found to increase linearly with an increase in energy stored in the nuclear motion of the O1s[-1]2b2 state, demonstrating that this dissociation channel is mediated by the nuclear motion in the core-excited state. The reaction pathway to the H2+ formation along the Auger final state of H2O+, mediated by the nuclear motion before the Auger decay, is discussed with the help of ab initio potential surfaces of the Auger final states.

Abstract

The resonant Auger spectrum from the decay of F 1s-excited CF4 is measured. Several lines exhibit a nondispersive kinetic energy as the exciting photon energy is tuned through the resonance region. The F 1s[–1] atomiclike Auger line is split into two components due to the emission of Auger electrons by a fragment in motion, when electron emission is observed along the polarization vector of the light. This Doppler splitting is direct evidence that the core excitation leads to Td→C3v symmetry lowering, by elongation of a specific C-F bond preferentially aligned along the polarization vector of the incident photon.

Abstract

We study the electronic structure of CeCuAs2, which is known to show an anomalous negative temperature coefficient of resistivity below room temperature, while the thermopower shows metallic behavior. We carry out hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (PES), x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and resonant PES across the Ce 3d-4f and Cu 2p-3d thresholds to investigate the role of Kondo screening in CeCuAs2. The Ce 3d core-level PES shows the f0, f1, and f2 features, and the Ce 3d-4f XAS shows corresponding features due to transitions into the f1 and f2 states, as in Kondo systems. The spectral feature assignments are confirmed by single-impurity Anderson model calculations and indicate a nearly trivalent-Ce configuration with small but finite mixed valency. The resonant PES valence band spectra across the Ce 3d-4f threshold show an intense Ce 4f1 resonance just below the Fermi level, while the Ce 4f0 feature is observed at a binding energy of 2.5 eV. The obtained f partial density of states shows an unusual pseudogaplike dip at the Fermi level in CeCuAs2. The results indicate the importance of Kondo screening and a pseudogap in the f partial density of states for the anomalous transport and magnetic properties of CeCuAs2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In magnetic materials showing helimagnetic orders, "spin chirality" is one of the key order parameters to describe their electronic properties and often induces unique physical phenomena related to its symmetry breakings. Thus, observation of its domain structure, that is, the spin-chiral domain structure, is essential to fully understand the properties of helimagnetic materials. However, such domain structures are largely uninvestigated because of a lack of technique. Here, we report spatial maps of spin-chiral domains in helimagnetic Ba0.5Sr1.5Zn2Fe12O22 by means of a scanning resonant x-ray microdiffraction technique using circularly polarized x rays. The use of a highly focused incident x-ray beam allows the observation of self-organizing spin-chiral domain patterns with the highest contrast ever achieved in helimagnetic materials.
