Abstract

The most remarkable difference between electric vehicles (EVs) and conventional ones is the fuel burning dependency of the internal combustion engine, while the emerging EVs operate on electric motors. These alternations create staggering shifts in both lubricants' market demand and performance specifications. Lubricants for electrical powertrain constitutes greases, transmission oils, and lubricants for auxiliary systems and do not rely on engine oils as internal combustion vehicles. The new standards will be more focused on lubricants' electrical properties such as breakage voltage and conductivity, coupled with tribological performance under high rpm, corrosion resistance and thermal management benchmarks. This paper thematically reviews the different studies performed with nanolubricants, and how they match EVs' operational requirements. Conclusions from this study can be considered as guidelines for the potential application of nanolubricants in EVs and possible future research that can be accomplished on the topic. Abstract

The principal factors that affect the characteristics of contact problem between cam and follower vary enormously during the operating cycle of this mechanism. This includes radius of curvature, surface velocities and applied load. It has been found over the last decades that the mechanism operates under an extremely thin film of lubricant. Any practical improvement in the level of film thickness that separates the contacted surfaces represents an essential step towards a satisfactory design of the system. In this paper a detailed numerical study is presented for the cam and follower (flat-faced) lubrication including the effect of introducing an axial modification (parabolic shape) of the cam depth on the levels of film thickness and pressure distribution. This is achieved based on a point contact model for a cam and flat-faced follower system. The results reveal that the cam form of modification has considerable consequences on the level of predicted film thickness and pressure distribution as well as surface deformation.

Abstract

The problem of energy efficiency is becoming an essential issue in the design of mobile machines with more restrictive emission legislations to come. To tackle these issues, it is necessary to consider the machine as a whole taking into account the losses from the power source up to the actuators. In the paper, different architectures performing boom function in a midi excavator will be simulated in Simcenter AMESim environment and compared to highlight the energy performance. Abstract

Polystyrene (PS)/MoS2@oleylamine composites were prepared by solvent blending method. Thermal, mechanical, and tribological properties of the resulting materials were analyzed as function of the filler concentration. SEM characterization for sample morphology as well as infrared spectroscopy and contact angle measurements were carried out in order to characterize the surface properties and the polymer-filler interactions. It was found that despite the poor compatibility between the MoS2@oleylamine nanosheets and the PS matrix, the resulting films present an almost homogeneous dispersion. The PS/MoS2@oleylamine composites showed enhanced thermal stability in comparison with neat PS. In addition, the introduction of MoS2@oleylamine strongly affects the mechanical properties of the PS matrix, reducing both the glass transition temperature and the elastic modulus. Abstract

Carbon nano-onions (CNOs) have been synthesized by the catalytic decomposition of methane at atmospheric pressure. The catalyst was prepared by a reduction-substitution method. The produced CNOs have a regular shape with concentric carbon layers with an external diameter of about 50 nm. A systematic study of their stability in Group I and III base oils, with and without low amounts of dispersant/surfactants, was performed, revealing the effectiveness of the synergistic combination of SDBS and Tween 80. Tribological tests showed a significant reduction of friction coefficient and wear scar diameter up to 23 % and 20 %. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In this talk we are concerned with a new development of an on-line road condition monitoring methodology and its implementation using PDE form of LuGre tyre-road friction model. The road condition is recursively evaluated regarding slipperiness and is classified into three grades, normal (_ _ 1), i% slippery (1 < _ < 5), and mixed friction surface (_ is varying). The linearized tyre model parameters are estimated and then converted to the initial values of identification algorithm through the multivariate interpolation. An iterative parameter identification algorithm that utilizes steady state solution of the PDE form of LuGre, is used to identify the road condition parameters. In order to have a fast, robust and efficient identification algorithm, a minimizing quadratic function subject to an ellipsoidal constraint is considered, which is guaranteed to yield an optimal solution in a finite number of iterations. The talk is complemented by a performance report of the new algorithm for various road conditions. Our numerical testings are very promising and show the practical viability of the algorithm.

Abstract

In this work, a new methodology for online identification of the dry-clutch torque characteristics model in vehicular transmission systems is presented. The proposed approach provides a tool with capability to estimate the clutch torque model parameters directly, using the measurable signals of engine torque and speed within a multiple model predictive control loop, in real time. The first step is to calculate the clutch torque which includes some degree of uncertainty. Then, it is presented an advanced identification approach which is based on trust region and has enough robustness to cover the uncertainty of calculated torque. The structure aims to ensuring a comfortable clutch lock-up by keeping reasonable engagement period and avoiding engine stall. Real-time model simulations in various conditions are also presented to illustrate the superior performance and to demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithm. The identification method has also been tested on real vehicle equipped with 1.3 L turbocharged diesel engine and six-speed automated manual transmission.
