The aim of this paper is to extend the approximate quasi-interpolation on a uniform grid by dilated shifts of a smooth and rapidly decaying function on a uniform grid to scattered data quasi-interpolation. It is shown that high order approximation of smooth functions up to some prescribed accuracy is possible, if the basis functions, which are centered at the scattered nodes, are multiplied by suitable polynomials such that their sum is an approximate partition of unity. For Gaussian functions we propose a method to construct the approximate partition of unity and describe the application of the new quasi-interpolation approach to the cubature of multi-dimensional integral operators., Comment: 29 pages, 17 figures

The magnetic white dwarf SDSS J121209.31+013627.7 exhibits a weak, narrow Halpha emission line whose radial velocity and strength are modulated on a period of ~90 minutes. Though indicative of irradiation on a nearby companion, no cool continuum component is evident in the optical spectrum, and IR photometry limits the absolute magnitude of the companion to M_J > 13.37. This is equivalent to an isolated L5 dwarf, with T_eff < 1700 K. Consideration of possible evolutionary histories suggests that, until ~0.6 Gyr ago, the brown dwarf orbited a ~1.5 M_sun main seqeunce star with P ~ 1 yr, a ~ 1 AU, thus resembling many of the gaseous superplanets being found in extrasolar planet searches. Common envelope evolution when the massive star left the main sequence reduced the period to only a few hours, and ensuing angular momentum loss has further degraded the orbit. The binary is ripe for additional observations aimed at better studying brown dwarfs and the effects of irradiation on their structure., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Using an ultra sensitive magneto-optical Kerr rotation setup we have observed electrical spin injection from (Zn,Mn)Se into bulk GaAs and quantified the spin injection efficiency. The current induced contribution was carefully separated from possible artifacts and studied as a function of voltage and external magnetic field. Our measurements allow us to estimate the concentration of the electrically injected spins into GaAs to be approximately 0.4$\times10^{15}$cm$^{-3}$ at a reverse bias of 0.7 V., Comment: Submitted to PRL

Discoveries of two new white dwarf plus M star binaries with striking optical cyclotron emission features from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) brings to six the total number of X-ray faint, magnetic accretion binaries that accrete at rates < 10^{-13} Msun/yr, or <1% of the values normally encountered in cataclysmic variables. This fact, coupled with donor stars that underfill their Roche lobes and very cool white dwarfs, brand the binaries as post common-envelope systems whose orbits have not yet decayed to the point of Roche-lobe contact. They are pre-magnetic CVs, or pre-Polars. The systems exhibit spin/orbit synchronism and apparently accrete by efficient capture of the stellar wind from the secondary star, a process that has been dubbed a ``magnetic siphon''. Because of this, period evolution of the binaries will occur solely by gravitational radiation, which is very slow for periods >3 hr. Optical surveys for the cyclotron harmonics appear to be the only means of discovery, so the space density of pre-Polars could rival that of Polars, and the binaries provide an important channel of progenitors (in addition to the asynchronous Intermediate Polars). A key element in the emergence of a full spintronics technology is the development of voltage controlled spin filters to selectively inject carriers of desired spin into semiconductors. We previously demonstrated a prototype of such a device using a II-VI dilute-magnetic semiconductor quantum well which, however, still required an external magnetic field to generate the level splitting. Recent theory suggests that spin selection may be achievable in II-VI paramagnetic semiconductors without external magnetic field through local carrier mediated ferromagnetic interactions. We present the first experimental observation of such an effect using non-magnetic CdSe self-assembled quantum dots in a paramagnetic (Zn,Be,Mn)Se barrier., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

It is demonstrated by SQUID measurements that (Ga,Mn)As films can exhibit perpendicular easy axis at low temperatures, even under compressive strain, provided that the hole concentration is sufficiently low. In such films, the easy axis assumes a standard in-plane orientation when the temperature is raised towards the Curie temperature or the hole concentration is increased by low temperature annealing. These findings are shown to corroborate quantitatively the predictions of the mean-field Zener model for ferromagnetic semiconductors. We have investigated the growth by molecular-beam epitaxy of the II-VI diluted magnetic semiconductor (Zn,Mn)Se on As-passivated Si(100) substrates. The growth start has been optimized by using low-temperature epitaxy. Surface properties were assessed by Nomarski and scanning electron microscopy. Optical properties of (Zn,Mn)Se have been studied by photoluminescence and a giant Zeeman splitting of up to 30 meV has been observed. We report the discovery of a super-giant tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance in an epitaxially grown (Ga,Mn)As/GaAs/(Ga,Mn)As structure. The effect arises from a strong dependence of the electronic structure of ferromagnetic semiconductors on the magnetization orientation rather than from a parallel or antiparallel alignment of the contacts. The key novel spintronics features of this effect are: (i) both normal and inverted spin-valve like signals; (ii) a large non-hysteretic magnetoresistance for magnetic fields perpendicular to the interfaces; (iii) magnetization orientations for extremal resistance are, in general, not aligned with the magnetic easy and hard axis. (iv) Enormous amplification of the effect at low bias and temperatures.

We introduce a new class of spintronics devices in which a spin-valve like effect results from strong spin-orbit coupling in a single ferromagnetic layer rather than from injection and detection of a spin-polarized current by two coupled ferromagnets. The effect is observed in a normal-metal/insulator/ferromagnetic-semiconductor tunneling device. This behavior is caused by the interplay of the anisotropic density of states in (Ga,Mn)As with respect to the magnetization direction, and the two-step magnetization reversal process in this material., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PRL

We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of SN 2000ch, an unusual and extremely luminous variable star located in the galaxy NGC 3432. The object was discovered on 2000 May 3.2 during the course of the Lick Observatory Supernova Search, at an unfiltered magnitude of about 17.4. Pre-discovery images obtained in 1997, 1998, and 2000 April show the object with R = 19.2-19.5 mag. Optical spectra obtained beginning on 2000 May 6 show a smooth, flat continuum and strong, broad hydrogen Balmer emission lines at wavelengths consistent with the catalogued redshift of NGC 3432, strengthening the association of the variable with the galaxy. Photometric monitoring reveals a complex and erratic light curve over a time span of ~10 days. Subsequent optical spectra over the next ~3 months continued to show strong Balmer emission lines with a mean full-width at half-maximum intensity ~1550 km/s and a distinct red asymmetry. A spectrum obtained 9 months after the outburst is similar to the previous spectra, but the integrated flux in H-alpha is nearly half that observed during the outburst. The object's photometric behavior, spectrum, and luminosity suggest that it is a very massive and luminous variable star and might be related to some luminous blue variable stars such as eta Carinae and SN 1997bs in NGC 3627. The brightest apparent magnitude implies an absolute magnitude of approximately -12.7 at the distance of NGC 3432, a value which is comparable to eta Carinae during its outburst in the mid-nineteenth century., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, PASP, in press

We have fabricated (Ga,Mn)As nanostructures in which domain walls can be pinned by sub-10 nm constrictions. Controlled by shape anisotropy, we can switch the regions on either side of the constriction to either parallel or antiparallel magnetization. All samples exhibit a positive magnetoresistance, consistent with domain-wall trapping. For metallic samples we find a magnetoresistance up to 8%, which can be understood from spin accumulation. In samples where, due to depletion at the constriction, a tunnel barrier is formed, we observe a magnetoresistance of up to 2000 %., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submited to Phys. Rev. Lett

An initial assessment is made of white dwarf and hot subdwarf stars observed in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. In a small area of sky (190 square degrees), observed much like the full survey will be, 269 white dwarfs and 56 hot subdwarfs are identified spectroscopically where only 44 white dwarfs and 5 hot subdwarfs were known previously. Most are ordinary DA (hydrogen atmosphere) and DB (helium) types. In addition, in the full survey to date, a number of WDs have been found with uncommon spectral types. Among these are blue DQ stars displaying lines of atomic carbon; red DQ stars showing molecular bands of C_2 with a wide variety of strengths; DZ stars where Ca and occasionally Mg, Na, and/or Fe lines are detected; and magnetic WDs with a wide range of magnetic field strengths in DA, DB, DQ, and (probably) DZ spectral types. We have fabricated all II-VI semiconductor resonant tunneling diodes based on the (Zn,Mn,Be)Se material system, containing dilute magnetic material in the quantum well, and studied their current-voltage characteristics. When subjected to an external magnetic field the resulting spin splitting of the levels in the quantum well leads to a splitting of the transmission resonance into two separate peaks. This is interpreted as evidence of tunneling transport through spin polarized levels, and could be the first step towards a voltage controlled spin filter., Comment: To be published in Phys. Rev. Detection of the degree of circular polarization of the electroluminescence of a light-emitting diode fitted with a spin injecting contact (a spin-LED) allows for a direct determination of the spin polarization of the injected carriers. Here, we compare the detection efficiency of (Al,Ga)As spin-LEDs fitted with a (Zn,Be,Mn)Se spin injector in top- and side-emission configuration. In contrast with top emission, we cannot detect the electrical spin injection in side emission from analysing the degree of circular polarization of the electroluminescence. To reduce resonant optical pumping of quantum-well excitons in the side emission, we have analysed structures with mesa sizes as small as 1 micron., Comment: 15 pages with 3 figures

It is demonstrated by SQUID magnetization measurements that (Ga,Mn)As films can exhibit rich characteristics of magnetic anisotropy depending not only to the epitaxial strain but being strongly influenced by the hole and Mn concentration, and temperature. This behavior reflects the spin anisotropy of the valence subbands and corroborates predictions of the mean field Zener model of the carrier mediated ferromagnetism in III-V diluted magnetic semiconductors with Mn. At the same time the existence of in-plane uniaxial anisotropy with [110] the easy axis is evidenced. This is related to the top/bottom symmetry breaking, resulting in the lowering of point symmetry of (Ga,Mn)As to the C_{2v} symmetry group. An infrared-selected, narrow-line QSO has been found to exhibit an extraordinarily broad Halpha emission line in polarized light. Both the extreme width (35,000 km/sec full-width at zero intensity) and 3,000 km/sec redshift of the line centroid with respect to the systemic velocity suggest emission in a deep gravitational potential. An extremely red polarized continuum and partial scattering of the narrow lines at a position angle common to the broad-line emission imply extensive obscuration, with few unimpeded lines of sight to the nucleus., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, to appear in the Astrophysical Journal Letters

We present the first far-ultraviolet (FUV) observations of the magnetic cataclysmic variable VV Puppis, obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer satellite. In addition, we have obtained simultaneous ground-based optical photometric observations of VV Pup during part of the FUV observation. The shapes of the FUV and optical light curves are consistent with each other and with those of past observations at optical, extreme-ultraviolet, and X-ray wavelengths. Time-resolved FUV spectra during the portion of VV Pup's orbit when the accreting magnetic pole of the white dwarf can be seen show an increasing continuum level as the accretion spot becomes more directly visible. The most prominent features in the spectrum are the O VI 1031.9A, 1037.6A emission lines. We interpret the shape and velocity shift of these lines in the context of an origin in the accretion funnel near the white dwarf surface. A blackbody function with T > 90,000 K provides an adequate fit to the FUV spectral energy distribution of VV Pup., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, 1 table; to be published in the Astronomical Journal

Classical motion of positronium embedded in a magnetic field is studied, and computation shows the emergence of chaotic orbits. Recent work investigating quantum behavior of this system predicts extremely long lifetimes. Chaos assisted tunneling, however may lead to significant shortening of the lifetime of this system., Comment: 3 pages,4 figures

Semiconductor spintronics will need to control spin injection phenomena in the non-linear regime. In order to study these effects we have performed spin injection measurements from a dilute magnetic semiconductor [(Zn,Be,Mn)Se] into nonmagnetic (Zn,Be)Se at elevated bias. When the applied voltage is increased to a few mV we find a strong decrease of the spin injection efficiency. The observed behavior is modelled by extending the charge-imbalance model for spin injection to include band bending and charge accumulation at the interface of the two compounds. We find that the observed effects can be attributed to repopulation of the minority spin level in the magnetic semiconductor., Comment: tex file, 4 eps figures

We obtained EUV photometry, optical spectroscopy, and multi-color optical photometry for WX Cet during its 1998 November superoutburst. WX Cet is only the second short-period, low mass transfer CV (TOAD) to ever be observed in the EUV. Our determined superhump period is consistent with that found by Kato et al. (0.059 d) and we confirm that superhumps are grey in the optical. The optical spectra provide direct evidence that the line emission region is optically thick and our multi-wavelength photometric measurements are used to determine the inner accretion disk and boundary layer temperatures during superoutburst. Using a determined distance to WX Cet of ~130 pc, we find T$_{ID}$= 21,000K and T_{BL}~72,500K. Both values are in good agreement with that expected by models of the superoutburst continuum being produced by the inner disk and boundary layer., Comment: Accepted in PASP - July 2002 issue

We present observations of the proposed double degenerate polar RX J1914+24. Our optical and infrared spectra show no emission lines. This, coupled with the lack of significant levels of polarisation provide difficulties for a double degenerate polar interpretation. Although we still regard the double degenerate polar model as feasible, we have explored alternative scenarios for RX~J1914+24. These include a double degenerate algol system, a neutron star-white dwarf pair and an electrically powered system. The latter model is particularly attractive since it naturally accounts for the lack of both emission lines and detectable polarisation in RX J1914+24. The observed X-ray luminosity is consistent with the predicted power output. If true, then RX J1914+24 would be the first known stellar binary system radiating largely by electrical energy., Comment: 8 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Optical broad-band polarimetry is presented for near-infrared color-selected AGN classified QSOs based on their K-band luminosity. More than 10% of a sample of 70 QSOs discovered in the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) with J-K > 2 and M_K < -23 show high broad-band linear polarization (P > 3%), and values range to a maximum of P = 11%. High polarization tends to be associated with the most luminous objects at K, and with QSOs having the highest near-IR-to-optical flux ratios. The 2MASS QSO sample includes objects possessing a wide range of optical spectral types. High polarization is seen in two of 22 broad emission-line (Type 1) objects, but 1/4 of the QSOs of intermediate spectral type (Type 1.5-1.9) are highly polarized. None of the nine QSOs classified as Type 2 exhibit P > 3%. It is likely that the unavoidable inclusion of unpolarized starlight from the host galaxy within the observation aperture results in reduced polarization for the narrow emission-line objects. The high polarization of 2MASS-discovered QSOs supports the conclusion inferred from their near-IR and optical colors, that the nuclei of many of these objects are obscured to some degree by dust. The 2MASS QSO sample is compared to other, predominantly radio-quiet, QSOs and is found to be consistent with the idea that the orientation of AGN to the line of sight plays a major role in determining their observed properties., Comment: To appear in The Astrophysical Journal. 19 pages, 6 tables, 7 figures

We present UV and optical spectropolarimetry of two highly polarized IRAS-selected QSOs, IRAS 13349+2438 and the BALQSO IRAS 14026+4341. The polarization in both objects rises rapidly toward the blue, peaks near 3000 A in the rest frame and remains nearly constant for shorter wavelengths. The rest frame optical polarized flux density spectra also increase rapidly towards the blue, but then decrease dramatically below 3000 A. This distinctive wavelength dependence of polarized flux shows that the polarization is produced by dust scattering. As for many Seyfert, radio and Hyperluminous Infrared Galaxies (HIGs), the lower polarization of the weak [O III] 4959,5007 lines in IRAS 13349+2438 suggests that the scattering grains lie interior to, or mixed with the narrow line gas. We construct full radiative transfer models of these systems consisting of a dusty sphere of modest optical depth illuminated axisymmetrically from within by a powerlaw QSO spectrum. We show that this simple model successfully reproduces the qualitative polarization properties of the objects. Despite similarities to other IRAS-selected BALQSOs, our FOS spectropolarimetry of IRAS 13349+2438 does not reveal broad absorption lines. IRAS 14026+4341 has an Al III BAL in both scattered and total flux density. A novel magnetoresistance effect, due to the injection of a spin-polarized electron current from a dilute magnetic into a non-magnetic semiconductor, is presented. The effect results from the suppression of a spin channel in the non-magnetic semiconductor and can theoretically yield a positive magnetoresistance of 100%, when the spin flip length in the non-magnetic semiconductor is sufficiently large. We report on the MBE-growth and magnetotransport properties of p-type BeMnTe, a new ferromagnetic diluted magnetic semiconductor. BeMnTe thin film structures can be grown almost lattice matched to GaAs for Mn concentrations up to 10% using solid source MBE. A high p-type doping with nitrogen can be achieved by using an RF-plasma source. BeMnTe and BeTe layers have been characterized by magneto-transport measurements. At low temperatures, the BeMnTe samples exhibit a large anomalous Hall effect. A hysteresis in the anomalous Hall effect appears below 2.5K in the most heavily doped sample, which indicates the occurrence of a ferromagnetic phase., Comment: pdf only

Optical spectrophotometry and circular spectropolarimetry are presented for several candidate magnetic white dwarfs that were identified during the Hamburg/ESO survey for bright QSOs. HE 1211-1707 and HE 1043-0502 are rare examples of white dwarfs that show neutral helium lines in a high magnetic field, in these cases ~50 MG and ~800 MG, respectively. The former is also found to be rotating with a period of ~2 hr. HE 1045-0908 is a hydrogen-line star at ~20 MG, spinning with a period in the range ~2-4 hr. Attempts at modeling the limited amount of phase-resolved data that is available suggest that the field structure departs substantially from a simple centered dipolar geometry. Two rather cool white dwarfs with unidentified broad absorption spectral features, HE 0236-2656 and HE 0330-0002, are confirmed to be magnetic. Line identifications for these stars are not yet possible, but the atmospheres are probably helium-rich, with spectral features formed by trace compounds of hydrogen, carbon, and perhaps other metals. HE 0003-5701 and HE 0338-3853 were proposed by Reimers et al. (1996) alongside two similar objects to be magnetic DB white dwarfs, with magnetic fields all near 20 MG. However, our observations show that the first two, and by extension all four, are nonmagnetic white dwarf + cool dwarf pairs, deserving of study in their own right as possible close binaries. Finally, a lack of circular polarisation suggests that HE 0000-3430 and HE 0127-3110 are also nonmagnetic. HE 0000-3430 appears to be a featureless DC white dwarf over the spectral range observed here, while the sole absorption line near 5890A in HE 0127-3110 could be either He I 5876A or the Na I D doublet, but there are difficulties with either interpretation., Comment: Accepted for MNRAS, 10 pages, 9 figures

Phase-resolved HST/STIS ultraviolet spectroscopy of the high-field polar AR UMa confirms that the WD photospheric Ly alpha Zeeman features are formed in a magnetic field of ~200 MG. In addition to the Ly alpha pi and sigma+ components, we detect the forbidden hydrogen 1s0->2s0 transition, which becomes ``enabled'' in the presence of both strong magnetic and electric fields. Our attempt in fitting the overall optical+UV low state spectrum with single temperature magnetic WD models remains rather unsatisfactory, indicating either a shortcoming in the present models or a new physical process acting in AR UMa. As a result, our estimate of the WD temperature remains somewhat uncertain, Twd=20000+-5000K. We detect a broad emission bump centered at ~1445A and present throughout the entire binary orbit, and a second bump near ~1650A, which appears only near the inferior conjunction of the secondary star. These are suggestive of low harmonic cyclotron emission produced by low-level (M-dot~1e-13 Msun/yr) accretion onto both magnetic poles. However, there is no evidence in the power spectrum of light variations for accretion in gas blobs. The observed Ly alpha emission line shows a strong phase dependence with maximum flux and redshift near orbital phase phi~0.3, strongly indicating an origin on the trailing hemisphere of the secondary star. An additional Ly alpha absorption feature with similar phasing as the Ly alpha emission, but a \~700km/s blueshift could tentatively be ascribed to absorption of WD emission in a moderately fast wind. High-quality phase-resolved optical spectropolarimetry is presented for the magnetic cataclysmic variable V884 Her. The overall circular polarization during active accretion states is low and only slightly variable in the range 5000-8000A. However, the polarization is highly structured with wavelength, showing very broad polarization humps, narrow features that are associated with weak absorption lines in the total spectral flux, and sharp reversals across each major emission line. The polarization reversals arise from Zeeman splitting in the funnel gas in a longitudinal magnetic field B~30kG. The set of narrow, polarized absorption features matches the Zeeman pattern of hydrogen for a nearly uniform magnetic field of B=150MG, indicating that the features are "halo" absorption lines formed in a relatively cool reversing layer above the shock. With this identification, the broad polarization humps centered near 7150A and below 4000A are assigned to cyclotron emission from the fundamental and first harmonic (n=2), respectively. V884 Her is only the second AM Her system known with a field exceeding 100MG, and the first case in which the cyclotron fundamental has been directly observed from a magnetic white dwarf., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, LaTeX, to appear in The Astrophysical Journal, Part 1

We present optical observations of two remarkable new AGN discovered by the Two-Micron All Sky Survey. Both are classified as QSOs based on their optical spectra, near-IR colors, and near-IR and [O III]5007 luminosities, but their optical polarizations are among the highest seen for non-blazar AGN; approaching 15% for 2MASSI J151653.2+190048. The polarized light spectrum for each object exhibits broad Balmer emission lines, but lacks the narrow lines that are evident in the total light spectrum. This is most pronounced for the Type-1.5 object 2MASSI J165939.7+183436, where broad lines dominate only in polarized light. The polarization properties of these AGN suggest that dust near the nucleus at least partially obscures the AGN and that material probably intermixed with the narrow line-emitting gas scatters nuclear light into our line of sight. These QSOs illustrate the variety of highly polarized AGN that have been missed by traditional optical search techniques, and demonstrate that such objects are exposed by surveys in the near-IR., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters; 4 pages, 2 figures

We have calculated the spin-polarization effects of a current in a two dimensional electron gas which is contacted by two ferromagnetic metals. In the purely diffusive regime, the current may indeed be spin-polarized. However, for a typical device geometry the degree of spin-polarization of the current is limited to less than 0.1%, only. The advent of large area deep radio and X-ray surveys is leading to the creation of many new BL Lac samples. In particular, the ROSAT All-Sky, Green Bank and FIRST surveys are proving to be rich sources of new BL Lacs. We will discuss the methods used in four independent BL Lac searches based on these surveys.
