This presentation covers an introduction to the Controlled Vocabularies, explain all about the COAR Controlled Vocabularies Interest Group, its activities and future plans as well as release of v1.1. Resource Types vocabularies. COAR, the Confederation of Open access repositories is an international association with over 100 members and partners all around the world, representing libraries, research institutions, funders and others. COAR aims to bring repository community and networks together for capacity building, policy and practise alignment as a global voice. Controlled vocabularies are an important aspect of interoperability which is the one of the key issues that COAR values a lot. Controlled vocabularies enable discovery, share and reuse of the content by providing standardized terminology in repositories. 3rd Altmetrics Conference (3:AM), Bucharest, Romania – September 28th – 29th, 2016., Usage metrics about all kinds of scholarly output are one of the measures to assess Open Access impact and are a value added service of Open Access repositories. OpenAIRE2020 is running usage data pilots that monitors and analyzes usage information, as well exploits usage metrics like views and downloads as complements to other scientific metrics. However, user activity is not limited in the traditional ways of accessing scholar information and the current diversity of the scholarly ecosystem implies a variety of alternative metrics for measuring impact. Therefore a strong need arises to develop complementary metrics for impact and quality which are less simplistic, more reliable and open for use and reuse. OpenAIRE2020 will do this by monitoring and analyzing repository usage data and exploiting not only usage metrics like downloads and metadata views, but also combine these metrics with the new ways of usage activity, i.e. the social content. In this manner OpenAIRE2020 will operate as a hub of repository usage statistics to the other article level metrics. Usage data will be collected in two ways: (1) by embedding tracking page tags in Open Access repositories which notify OpenAIRE's gathering service of the usage events, and (2) (national) usage statistics aggregators (e.g. IRUS-UK) exposing consolidated statistics via SUSHI-Lite. The final outcome is an OpenAIRE service for tracking, collection, cleaning, analysis, evaluation and COUNTER-compliant reporting of the usage data. The poster will describe two aspects: 1) The potential of the OpenAIRE Usage Statistics service to explore a number of multidimensional scholarly performance indicators linking Open Access with social and economic impact. 2) Contributing as a Usage Statistics Hub to services aggregating article-level metrics.

The use of controlled vocabularies in bibliographic metadata is essential to ensure interoperability in terms of data exchange and the provision of value added services. Repositories are using controlled vocabularies (e.g. from the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative) and application profiles (e.g. info: eu-repo) across system boundaries. However, in practice, one can observe a lack of consistent use, granularity and regular maintenance which has significant negative impact on resuability of metadata. In addition, new application scenarios arise (e.g. recording of funder and project/grant information, linking publications with other scholarly output, producing reliable usage statistics and sharing of scholarly information across different systems, like literature repositories, data repositories and current research information systems) and thus increased demands on controlled vocabularies. The COAR Interest Group on “Controlled Vocabularies” aims to address this problem and is developing a set of controlled vocabularies for open access repositories as a community-driven effort. Using the example of the COAR ResourceType vocabulary to describe the genre of a digital object organizational, methodological and technical steps of its implementation are presented.

New roles for open access repositories, value-added services, improving the flow of research knowledge and international collaboration were among the major themes for this year's COAR (Confederation of Open Access Repositories) Annual Meeting and Conference, held at the University of Vienna on April 12-13, 2016. There was also a special focus on China providing an overview of the current state of open access and open research data in China. Additionally, the annual General Assembly, dealing with the business matters of COAR, took place on April 12.

Paper presented in "11th International Conference on Open Repositories" (OR 2016), Dublin, Irland, 13 - 16th june 2016., Usage metrics about scholarly output, such as publications and research data, are one of the measures to assess Open Access impact. The OpenAire 2020 [1] project aims to offer a service that monitors and analyzes usage information, as well as exploits usage metrics like views and downloads, which could be used as complements of bibliometrics and webometrics. In this paper, we present the first step towards the implementation of this service, manifested as a pilot run in a set of repositories, together with some initial results which illustrate the use of the applied methodology.

OpenAIRE supports the European Commission Open Access policy by providing an infrastructure for researchers to comply with the European Union Open Access mandate. The current OpenAIRE infrastructure and services, resulting from OpenAIRE and OpenAIREplus FP7 projects, builds on Open Access research results from a wide range of repositories and other data sources: institutional or thematic publication repositories, Open Access journals, data repositories, Current Research Information Systems and aggregators. Publishing data is more and more considered as part of the research process. While funder mandates and journal policies demand the disclosure of research data at the time of article publication there is still a lack of guidelines and workflows to reference data from grey literature. Based on multidisciplinary examples found in our repository “PUB” we present a user friendly generalized framework for interlinking research data with grey literature. This way, we are not only increasing the number of “grey” non-textual research outputs – including data publications – but also foster awareness of its sharing and re-use in scientific communities.

Poster apresentado no CERN Workshop on Innovations in Scholarly Communication (OAI9), Genebra, Suíça, junho 2015., OpenAIRE2020 is the European Union initiative for the Open Access Infrastructure for Research in Europe which supports open scholarly communication and access to the research outputs of European funded projects. The infrastructure operates on three levels: gathering research outputs and policy harmonization and community outreach. The current OpenAIRE infrastructure and services, resulting from the FP7 projects OpenAIRE and OpenAIREplus, build on Open Access research results from a wide range of repositories and other data sources: institutional or thematic publication repositories, Open Access journals, data repositories, Current Research Information Systems (CRIS) and aggregators. The poster briefly outlines three complementary areas of the process of gathering Open Access and funded content: 1) the set of guidelines available for OpenAIRE data source managers (for Literature Repositories, Data Archives and CRIS managers), 2) the metadata curation and enrichment process that follows the OpenAIRE data curation policy, 3) the validator tool available for testing the guidelines compatibility of the data sources and their registration into the infrastructure. OpenAIRE collects research outputs from a network of data sources. To facilitate this, an integrated suite of guidelines was developed with specific requirements supporting the identification and monitoring of Open Access and the European Commission’s funded research , namely for instutional and thematic literature repositories and national aggregators, data archives, OA publishers and CRIS systems. OpenAIRE accepts into its infrastructure: 1) All global Open Access research outputs harvested from a range of repositories national aggregators and ejournals (peer-reviewed open access publications as well as grey literature like workshop reports, conference proceedings, technical reports etc.); 2) OpenAIRE also welcomes global open access content from non-European repositories and currently harvests from a number of international resources (e.g arXiv.org); 3) Where possible, the content should be related to funding information to help measure the impact of funding information; 4) Non-open access material will be accepted when it is related to European Commission funding information, or related to another OpenAIRE affiliated funder; 5) To complement OpenAIRE’s data acquisition policy, OpenAIRE is also collecting metadata of research datasets that are outcomes of a funded research project identified by a project identifier, or that are linked with a publication in the OpenAIRE information space. OpenAIRE Guidelines give recommendations to repository and other scientific information data managers about encoding of bibliographic metadata, while the validation service makes sure that bibliographic information that enters the OpenAIRE Information Space meets the OpenAIRE guidelines and ensures formal quality of content description. The guidelines have adopted established and existing practices with different classes of content providers: i) guidelines for Literature Repositories using Dublin Core, ii) guidelines for Data Repositories using Datacite Metadata Schema, iii) guidelines for CRIS systems based on CERIF-XML. They have in common the recommended use of controlled vocabularies (for publication type, language and date encoding, rights information and access mode); of persistent identifiers for publications, datasets; of proper information encoding about funding bodies and project grant Ids. Currently, OpenAIRE provides a rich graph of information about Open Access and funded research results. In particular and wherever possible, publications are linked to datasets and project information. This requires collecting different kinds of information: authoritative files about projects from funder databases, lists of repositories and ejournals from registries like OpenDOAR, re3data, DOAJ, and bibliographic information from these institutional or thematic data sources. In addition OpenAIRE’s knowledge extraction services enrich metadata records with links between research outputs, citation information and similar research publications. Furthermore users, e.g. project coordinators, are able to flag up relationships between data and publications, manually claiming links via the OpenAIRE portal related to a project in the OpenAIRE Information Space or in CrossRef/DataCite. The OpenAIRE infrastructure will continue to be developed by OpenAIRE 2020, a 42 month (2015- 2018) project funded by the European Commission Horizon 2020 Programme. Its main objective is to establish an open and sustainable scholarly communication infrastructure responsible for the overall management, analysis, manipulation, provision, monitoring and cross-linking of all research outcomes (publications, related datasets, software and services) across existing, planned and future repositories.

A growing number of universities are seeking for ways to deal with research data. Some have recently launched policies and dedicated services. But challenges still exist of how to best address research data management on a multidisciplinary scale and across the research lifecycle. In this talk, we present our experiences in designing, governing, and maintaining institutional services for Research Data Management at Bielefeld University. They are a result of a bottom-up development strategy in cooperation with scientists, library, computing center, and research administration department. We focus on the support for data management planning, providing a web-based data management plan tool. Using a template-based system, the capabilities of the tool are flexible, allowing researchers to cover the specific needs of a project, coming from funding requirements, subject-matter, or the nature of the projects' data. For data publication, the institutional repository has been extended. Data can be published under an Open Database license and is registered with DataCite. For several disciplines, special services exist. For instance, the repository interoperates with research platforms. Federated author profiles make research data easily accessible from project webpages and staff directory. With this approach, first requirements from Bielefeld University's researchers and funders are met.

Briefing Paper about the COAR Interest Group „Controlled Vocabularies for Repository Assets” from 2014.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the selected workshops co-located with the 17th International Conference on Theory and Practice of Digital Libraries, TPDL 2013, held in Valletta, Malta, in September 2013. The volume is organized in three parts, containing the 26 revised full papers of the three workshops: Linking and Contextualizing Publications and Datasets (LCPD 2013); Supporting Users Exploration of Digital Libraries (SUEDL 2013); Moving beyond technology: iSchools and education in data curation. Is Data Curator a new role? (DataCur 2013).

The Information Inference Framework presented in this paper provides a general-purpose suite of tools enabling the definition and execution of flexible and reliable data processing workflows whose nodes offer application-specific processing capabilities. The IIF is designed for the purpose of processing big data, and it is implemented on top of Apache Hadoop-related technologies to cope with scalability and high-performance execution requirements. As a proof of concept we will describe how the framework is used to support linking and contextualization services in the context of the OpenAIRE infrastructure for scholarly communication. Supporting the open access policy of the European Commission, OpenAIRE is moving from a publication infrastructure to a more comprehensive infrastructure that covers all types of scientific output, funded by the European Commission, and widening to other European funding streams. It harvests content from a range of European repositories, and ensures raised visibility of valuable open access content, as well as links to project and funding information. In order to ensure interoperability from these research infrastructures, a common approach is need to adhere to existing and future guidelines. In this context, an integrated suite of guidelines have been developed. The poster will briefly outline the OpenAIRE Guidelines: Guidelines for Data Archive Managers, for Literature Repository Managers and for CRIS Managers. By implementing all three sets of the OpenAIRE Guidelines, repository managers will be able to enable authors who deposit publications in their repository to fulfill the EC Open Access requirements, as well as the requirements of other (national or international) funders with whom OpenAIRE cooperates. In addition it will allow the OpenAIRE infrastructure to add value‐added services such as discoverability and linking, and creation of enhanced publications. In short, building the stepping‐stones for a linked data infrastructure for research.

Databib (http://databib.org) is a curated, global, online catalog of research data repositories. Librarians and other information professionals have identified and cataloged over 500 data repositories that can be easily browsed and searched by users or integrated with other platforms or cyber infrastructure. Databib can help researchers find appropriate repositories to deposit their data, and it gives consumers of data a tool to discover repositories of datasets that meet their research or learning needs. Users can submit new repositories to Databib, which are reviewed and curated by an international board of editors. All information from Databib has been contributed to the public domain using the Creative Commons Zero protocol. Supported machine interfaces and formats include RSS, OpenSearch, RDF/XML, Linked Data (RDFa), and social networks such as Twitter, Facebook, and Google+. In this session, we will give a demonstration of Databib and give an overview of how researchers, librarians, funding agencies, students, data centers, software developers, and other users can utilize and integrate it.

The OpenAIRE Guidelines for Literature Repository Managers 3.0 provide orientation for repository managers to define and implement their local data management policies according to the requirements of the OpenAIRE - Open Access Infrastructure for Research in Europe. Initially, the requirements of the OpenAIRE infrastructure and the previous versions of the OpenAIRE Guidelines were established to support and monitor the implementation of theFP7 OA pilot. However, this version of the Guidelines, according to the expansion of the aims of the OpenAIRE project and infrastructure, has a broader scope. In fact, these guidelines are intended to guide repository manager to expose to the OpenAIRE infrastructure not only EC funded publications but also other Open Access publications, regardless of their funding. So, by implementing these Guidelines, repository managers will not only be enabling authors who deposit publications in their repository to fulfill the EC Open Access requirements, and eventually also the requirements of other (national or international) funders with whom OpenAIRE cooperates, but also incorporating their publications into the OpenAIRE infrastructure for discoverability and utilizing value-added services provided by the OpenAIRE portal. According to the ongoing expansion and anticipating the merger of the DRIVER Guidelines into the context of OpenAIRE Guidelines, detailed content from the DRIVER Guidelines 2.0 was adapted and added into this version of the Guidelines. The OpenAIRE Guidelines for Literature Repository Managers 3.0 are now only a part of a set of OpenAIRE Guidelines that also includes the OpenAIRE Guidelines for Data Archive Managers and the OpenAIRE CERIF-XML profile.

Context of scholarly results improves discovery, sharing and re-use in library and research communities. OpenAIREplus facilitates access to European research. Its mission is to interlink research publications, data, contributors and grants. Introducing pilots for the Social & Life Sciences we show how disciplinary services can be used to enhanced publications in cross-disciplinary environments. The approach followed originate from text-mining and interlinks innovative repository services and initiatives like DataCite.

Der Bedarf an Dienstleistungen für ein effektives Forschungsdaten-Management stellt die Wissenschaft und Infrastruktureinrichtungen vor große Herausforderungen. Für die Erstellung eines allgemeingültigen Konzeptes zur Verwaltung von Forschungsdaten werden an der Universitätsbibliothek Bielefeld fachspezifische Pilotprojekte gestartet, in denen Anforderungen und wissenschaftliche Arbeitsabläufe in den verschiedenen Disziplinen analysiert werden. Somit können geeignete Infrastrukturen geplant und realisiert werden.

Forschungsdaten sind unbestreitbarer Bestandteil des wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisprozesses. Das digitale Zeitalter er��ffnet hier nicht nur vielf��ltige neue M��glichkeiten, z.B. f��r Textanalysen, Erhebungen, Klima- oder Genomdaten. Es birgt auch erhebliche Risiken, denen mit Regeln f��r systematische Archivierung, Austausch und Wiederverwendung, Dokumentation von Daten usw. begegnet werden muss. Es werden Infrastrukturen f��r das Forschungsdatenmanagement ben��tigt, die derartige Regelwerke unterst��tzen. In dieser Pr��sentation wird der Aufbau eines Datenservicezentrums f��r Betriebs- und Organisationsdaten skizziert als ein Beispiel f��r die Kooperation zwischen Fakult��t f��r Soziologie und Bibliothek. Klassische Suchverfahren, basierend auf Indexierung von Inhalten und - insbesondere im bibliothekarischen Umfeld - strukturierten Metadateninformationen, sind grundlegend f��r (wissenschaftliche) Internetsuchmaschinen.Jedoch sind die Suchresultate in aller Regel mit Informationen ��berladen, die nicht immer im Kontext der gew��nschten Suchintention stehen. W��ren Repositorien im bibliothekarischen Umfeld lediglich abgeschottete elektronische Schubladen f��r wissenschaftliche Dokumente, dann w��ren sie ohne besonderen Mehrwert und im Prinzip entbehrlich. Eine simple Datenbank t��te es dann auch. Erst ihre Einbettung in die Arbeitsabl��ufe wissenschaftlicher Kommunikation machen sie zu unverzichtbaren und universellen Speichern. Doch dazu bedarf es weiterer Protokolle und darauf basierender Dienste. Im Rahmen der Pr��sentation werden die Grundlagen zweier neuartiger - durchaus komplement��rer - Entwicklungen gestreift und ihre Anwendungsbereiche beispielhaft in den EU-Projekten PEER und DRIVER skizziert. Dabei handelt es sich zum einen um SWORD (Simple Web-service Offering Repository Deposit), also um einen Dienst, der eine automatisierte ��bertragung von Daten aus einer Anwendung in ein Repository erm��glicht. Zum anderen geht es um OAI-ORE (Object Reuse and Exchange). The Draft report on the provision of usage data and manuscript deposit procedures for publishers and repository managers, deliverable 2.1, set out to establish a workflow for depositing stage-2 outputs in and harvesting log files from repositories to enable the research envisaged in the PEER project. As that report preceded the tendering process whereby the respective research teams were selected, a number of issues were flagged for attention, particularly of the Usage research team, in WP5 and have since been referred for consultation. A significant outcome of the previous draft report was the recommendation to establish the PEER Depot as a closed intermediary repository, to receive publisher deposit in the form of both 50% of the full-text outputs, as well as 100% of the metadata outputs; and to serve as a base line control for the research process. The PEER Depot has since been established, and has come to play a significant role in the workflow developed. While the draft report set out a preliminary deposit workflow from publishers to repositories, the central role of the PEER Depot has since influenced further developments in the provision of usage data and manuscript deposit procedures for both publishers and authors. This report is the result of an ongoing negotiation between stakeholder groups comprising publishers and the library/repository community to establish best practice in deposit proce- dures that are least disruptive of existing publication workflows, while minimizing additional effort in repository ingest activities.

Neue Formen der wissenschaftlichen Kommunikation basieren auf Fortschritten in den Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien. Das dadurch mögliche kollaborative wissenschaftliche Arbeiten liefert Ergebnisse, die in vielfältigen Formaten, als Text, Simulationsdaten oder multimediale Elemente vorliegen. Daraus ergeben sich besondere Anforderungen an Publikations- und Kommunikatonsinfrastrukturen, wie Interoperabilität, Repräsentation, Verteilung und Archivierung derartiger komplexer digitaler Objekte. Mit der Initiative Digital Peer Publishing existiert eine Infrastruktur für das Publizieren in elektronischen Zeitschriften. Dieses Publikationsformat erlaubt neben einem schnellen Wissenstransfer eine umfassende Repräsentation wissenschaftlicher Ergebnisse. Das Journal of Virtual Reality and Broadcasting als Teil dieser Initiative zeigt am Beispiel des elektronischen Publikationsprozesses den Stand der Wissensvernetzung in seiner Community, sowie aktuelle Entwicklungen um die Erweiterung innovativer Funktionen.

The internet causes a continuous emergence of novel forms of scholarly communication and collaboration. Electronic publishing provides a means for representing eventual outcomes of these processes, i.e. all types of content such as papers and advanced forms of media. Electronic journals are often chosen as an adequate publishing format because they simultaneously deliver content in a well-known manner but, at the same time, allow extending traditional publishing with innovative features. The initiative Digital Peer Publishing (DiPP) provides technological, organizational and legal frameworks and tools that help to incubate and proliferate such innovative publishing projects. The hosting platform reflects principles of a Service Oriented Architecture. It combines, via Web Services, already established components such as an OAI repository (Fedora) and a Web Content Management System (Plone) with customized workflows for document processing, conversion and distribution. As an open platform it is capable of integrating external tools and services or acts itself as a service provider. It is therefore disposed for supplementing research infrastructures with electronic publishing.

Progressive scientific differentiation and an ever increasing vision of how to exploit the potential of the digital world cause scientific communities to initiate novel and alter their existing publication efforts. Yet, traditional peer reviewing and high quality presentation formats are still desired means for becoming distinguished and being recognized as a journal, its advancement or its offspring. In practice, setting up and operating such eJournals can – and maybe must – benefit from support structures that go beyond simply offering content platforms. Within the open access initiative “Digital Peer Publishing” (DIPP) the academic library centre HBZ-NRW offers technical, organizational and legal solutions.
