Abstract

This study investigated growth performance, and carcass and raw ham quality of pigs from 4 genetic groups (GG), ANAS (A), DanBred (D), Goland (G) and Topig (T), fed conventional (CONV) or low-protein (LP) diets. In each of 3 trials, 96 pigs were housed in 8 pens in groups of 12 on the basis of their GG, sex (gilts and barrows), and BW. Each pen was assigned a CONV or LP diet. The CONV diets in early (89-120 kg BW) and late (121-165 kg BW) finishing contained 13.1 and 13.2 MJ/kg of ME, 147 and 132 g CP/kg, and 6.0 and 4.4 g/kg of standardized ileal digestible (SID) lysine, respectively. The LP diets in early and late finishing contained only 119 and 103 g/kg of CP, and 4.8 and 3.5 g/kg of SID lysine, respectively. Restricted feed allowance was increased on a weekly basis from 2.3 to 3.2 kg/d during the experiment. Automated feeding stations measured individual feed intake, and pigs were weighed at 3-weeks intervals until slaughter. Hot carcass was weighed and dissected into lean and fat primal cuts. After 24 h of chilling, hams were dressed, weighed, and scored for roundness (0 = low to 4 = high), fat cover thickness (-4 = thin to 4 = thick), marbling (0 = absent to 4 = evident), lean color (-4 = pale to 4 = dark), bicolor and veining (0 = absent to 4 = evident). In addition, ham backfat thickness was measured with a ruler. Dietary CP reduction did not influence final BW (166 kg), daily gain (0.67 kg/d), carcass weight (136 kg) or yield (0.82), but reduced feed efficiency by 5.2% (P<0.001). Irrespective of GG, the reduction in protein supply increased fat cover depth (P<0.001) and marbling (P=0.009) of hams, but did not influence other traits. Compared to A, hams from D were heavier (+6.4%; P<0.001), and had a thinner cover fat (19.4 vs 24.8 mm, P=0.001), a greater marbling score (2.05 vs 1.44 points; P<0.001) and a paler lean color (-0.61 vs 0.34 points; P<0.001). 126. Energy analysis of a personalized ventilation system in a cold climate: influence of the supplied air temperature

Abstract

In this study the influence of temperature of the supplied air of a personalized ventilation system on energy need has been investigated by means of simulations with IDA-ICE software. GenOpt software was used to determine the optimal supply air temperature. The simulated office room was located in a cold climate. The results reveal that the temperature of air supplied by personalized ventilation and its control strategy have a marked influence on energy consumption. The energy consumption with personalized ventilation may increase substantially (in the range: 61-268%) compared to mixing ventilation alone if energy saving strategies are not applied. The results show that the best supply strategy is to provide air constantly at 20°C, the minimum allowed supply temperature. Energy savings (in the range: 32 - 47%) may be achieved with personalized ventilation in comparison with mixing ventilation when the room temperature is controlled between 18°C and 29°C.

Abstract

The personal ventilation (PV) system decreases the pollutant concentration mostly in the microenvironment at the workstation, but it can also increase the contaminant in other zone of the room. Therefore, occupant’s exposure to pollutant depends on the ratio of time occupant stays at the workstation over total time he/she stays in the room. This ratio is named occupied density (OD). An index, using a modified definition of OD, is developed to compare and quantify the variation in terms of inhaled pollution by occupant in a room with PV in conjunction with a total-volume ventilation system. The index is applied to data collected during full-scale room measurements. The results show that the index can be used at the design stage for assessment the benefit of PV when applied in practice for office buildings with different OD. It is for example demonstrated that if the occupied density is lower than 0.5 the use of displacement ventilation alone will be advantageous with regard to human-produced contaminates in comparison when it is combined with PV system.

Abstract

Forty eight pigs were reared in outdoor pens (1.2 ha of land surface) from 80 to 180 kg of live weight. Two isoenergetic (ME = 14.6 MJ/kg DM) and isonitrogenous (CP=17.0% DM) feeds were compared; the first feed contained 10% of toasted full-fat soybean of conventional cultivars (TS), in the second one the toasted soybean was replaced by raw full-fat soybean low in antinutritional factors (RS). The pigs were blocked in 4 groups of 12 animals each and fed ad libitum. At 0, 43, 106 days on trial pigs were weighted, back-fat thickness was measured and blood samples were collected. At slaughter, samples of ham cover fat were collected to evaluate their acidic profile. The effects of feeds on growth performance, slaughter parameters, metabolic profile and nitrogen excretion (Nex) were studied. Nex was computed as difference between consumption and retention. Abstract

In a warm and humid climate, increasing the temperature set point offers considerable energy benefits with low first costs. Elevated air movement generated by a personally controlled fan can compensate for the negative effects caused by an increased temperature set point. Fifty-six tropically acclimatized persons in common Singaporean office attire (0.7 clo) were exposed for 90 minutes to each of five conditions: 23, 26, and 29°C and in the latter two cases with and without occupant-controlled air movement. Relative humidity was maintained at 60%. We tested thermal comfort, perceived air quality, sick building syndrome symptoms, and cognitive performance. We found that thermal comfort, perceived air quality, and sick building syndrome symptoms are equal or better at 26°C and 29°C than at the common set point of 23°C if a personally controlled fan is available for use. The best cognitive performance (as indicated by task speed) was obtained at 26°C; at 29°C, the availability of an occupant-controlled fan partially mitigated the negative effect of the elevated temperature. The typical Singaporean indoor air temperature set point of 23°C yielded the lowest cognitive performance. An elevated set point in air-conditioned buildings augmented with personally controlled fans might yield benefits for reduced energy use and improved indoor environmental quality in tropical climates. Abstract

Purpose To study the prognostic value for overall survival of baseline assessment of functional status, comorbidity, and quality of life (QoL) in elderly patients with advanced non—small-cell lung cancer treated with chemotherapy. Patients and Methods Data from 566 patients enrolled onto the phase III randomized Multicenter Italian Lung Cancer in the Elderly Study (MILES) study were analyzed. Functional status was measured as activities of daily living (ADL) and instrumental ADL (IADL). The presence of comorbidity was assessed with a checklist of 33 items; items 29 and 30 of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) core questionnaire QLQ-C30 (EORTC QLQ-C30) were used to estimate QoL. ADL was dichotomized as none versus one or more dependency. For IADL and QoL, three categories were defined using first and third quartiles as cut points. Comorbidity was summarized using the Charlson scale. Analysis was performed by Cox model, and stratified by treatment arm. Results Better values of baseline QoL (P = .0003) and IADL (P = .04) were significantly associated with better prognosis, whereas ADL (P = .44) and Charlson score (P = .66) had no prognostic value. Performance status 2 (P = .006) and a higher number of metastatic sites (P = .02) also predicted shorter overall survival. Conclusions Pretreatment global QoL and IADL scores, but not ADL and comorbidity, have significant prognostic value for survival of elderly patients with advanced non—small-cell lung cancer who were treated with chemotherapy. Using these scores in clinical practice might improve prognostic prediction for treatment planning.
