Abstract

This research aims to analyse the progression of 13-14 year-old students' ideas regarding the concept of energy transfer by means of heat in three biological mechanisms of thermal regulation. The outputs of 270 students, grouped in 77 cooperative groups, are analysed by comparing their explanations before and after conducting an experimental laboratory workshop in which they investigate the topic of energy transfer by means of heat. Students' explanations are analysed by identifying them in a "conceptual landscape" This landscape shows the conceptual frontiers that students must overcome to move from initial ideas to more sophisticated ones. Thus, while at the beginning of the workshop many students explain the thermal regulation mechanisms using the concept of the flow of coldness and give the morphological and behavioural mechanism the ability to generate heat, most students end up conceptualising the studied mechanisms in terms of the heat transfer regulating function from the warm living beings to the cold environment. Although the latter conceptualisation corresponds to an idea that is not the most sophisticated way of describing the transfer of energy through heat, it constitutes a first step in students' concept development towards ideas closer to those that are scientifically accepted. Abstract

Las formaciones Amagá (Oligoceno tardío - Mioceno temprano) y Combia (Mioceno tardío - Plioceno) afloran en la sección estratigráfica localizada en la quebrada La Táparo ubicada en el suroccidente antioqueño. Estas están compuestas por rocas siliciclásticas (i.e. lodolitas, limolitas, areniscas finas a conglomerática y conglomerados, acompañados de estructuras sedimentarias, contenido de materia orgánica y minerales accesorios como granates). Dicha sección fue levantada con el objetivo de realizar el análisis de facies y la reconstrucción paleoambiental, de la cual se determinó que las formaciones fueron acumuladas en ambientes fluviales específicamente en ríos meándricos y trenzados enmarcados en un entorno con influencia volcánica respectivamente. La dinámica tectónica regional que se dio en el norte de los Andes durante el Oligoceno - Plioceno generaron cambios en la configuración de la cuenca Amagá - Cauca - Patía (ACP) y por ende en la configuración sedimentológica en la que se depositaron estas formaciones. Procesos autocíclicos como la avulsión de los canales afectada por el incremento de aporte de sedimentos y cambios en el ajuste tectónico generado por el vulcanismo incipiente del Mioceno trajo consigo cambios en la arquitectura fluvial.

117. El vídeo indígena en la comunidad Embera Chamí. Nuevas estéticas y sistemas de circulación

Abstract

This text is a visual analysis of several videos by two music groups from the Emberá Chamí reservation in the municipality of Pueblo Rico Risaralda, Bidika and Ibanafarag. These groups have special features in their conception that permeate their songs, in the aesthetic construction of the video which reflects a social reality that has impacted both, their community and other social groups that have made part and victims of the armed conflict in Colombia. Abstract

Machine learning is a powerful tool that has previously been used to classify schizophrenia (SZ) patients from healthy controls (HC) using magnetic resonance images. Each study, however, uses different datasets, classification algorithms, and validation techniques. Here, we perform a critical appraisal of the accuracy of machine learning methodologies used in SZ/HC classifications studies by comparing three machine learning algorithms (logistic regression [LR], support vector machines [SVMs], and linear discriminant analysis [LDA]) on three independent datasets (435 subjects total) using two tissue density estimates and cortical thickness (CT). Performance is assessed using 10-fold cross-validation, as well as a held-out validation set. Classification using CT outperformed tissue densities, but there was no clear effect of dataset. LR, SVMs, and LDA each yielded the highest accuracies for a different feature set and validation paradigm, but most accuracies were between 55 and 70%, well below previously reported values. The highest accuracy achieved was 73.5% using CT data and an SVM. Taken together, these results illustrate some of the obstacles to constructing effective disease classifiers, and suggest that tissue densities and CT may not be sufficiently sensitive for SZ/HC classification given current available methodologies and sample sizes.

Abstract

Importance: Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) studies indicate that altered brain glutamatergic function may be associated with the pathophysiology of schizophrenia and the response to antipsychotic treatment. However, the association of altered glutamatergic function with clinical and demographic factors is unclear.Objective: To assess the associations of age, symptom severity, level of functioning, and antipsychotic treatment with brain glutamatergic metabolites.Data Sources: The MEDLINE database was searched to identify journal articles published between January 1, 1980, and June 3, 2020, using the following search terms: MRS or magnetic resonance spectroscopy and (1) schizophrenia or (2) psychosis or (3) UHR or (4) ARMS or (5) ultra-high risk or (6) clinical high risk or (7) genetic high risk or (8) prodrome* or (9) schizoaffective. Authors of 114 1H-MRS studies measuring glutamate (Glu) levels in patients with schizophrenia were contacted between January 2014 and June 2020 and asked to provide individual participant data.Study Selection: In total, 45 1H-MRS studies contributed data.Data Extraction and Synthesis: Associations of Glu, Glu plus glutamine (Glx), or total creatine plus phosphocreatine levels with age, antipsychotic medication dose, symptom severity, and functioning were assessed using linear mixed models, with study as a random factor.Main Outcomes and Measures: Glu, Glx, and Cr values in the medial frontal cortex (MFC) and medial temporal lobe (MTL).Results: In total, 42 studies were included, with data for 1251 patients with schizophrenia (mean [SD] age, 30.3 [10.4] years) and 1197 healthy volunteers (mean [SD] age, 27.5 [8.8] years). The MFC Glu (F1,1211.9 = 4.311, P = .04) and Glx (F1,1079.2 = 5.287, P = .02) levels were lower in patients than in healthy volunteers, and although creatine levels appeared lower in patients, the difference was not significant (F1,1395.9 = 3.622, P = .06). In both patients and volunteers, the MFC Glu level was negatively associated with age (Glu to Cr ratio, F1,1522.4 = 47.533, P < .001; cerebrospinal fluid-corrected Glu, F1,1216.7 = 5.610, P = .02), showing a 0.2-unit reduction per decade. In patients, antipsychotic dose (in chlorpromazine equivalents) was negatively associated with MFC Glu (estimate, 0.10 reduction per 100 mg; SE, 0.03) and MFC Glx (estimate, -0.11; SE, 0.04) levels. The MFC Glu to Cr ratio was positively associated with total symptom severity (estimate, 0.01 per 10 points; SE, 0.005) and positive symptom severity (estimate, 0.04; SE, 0.02) and was negatively associated with level of global functioning (estimate, 0.04; SE, 0.01). In the MTL, the Glx to Cr ratio was positively associated with total symptom severity (estimate, 0.06; SE, 0.03), negative symptoms (estimate, 0.2; SE, 0.07), and worse Clinical Global Impression score (estimate, 0.2 per point; SE, 0.06). The MFC creatine level increased with age (estimate, 0.2; SE, 0.05) but was not associated with either symptom severity or antipsychotic medication dose.Conclusions and Relevance: Findings from this mega-analysis suggest that lower brain Glu levels in patients with schizophrenia may be associated with antipsychotic medication exposure rather than with greater age-related decline. Abstract

Objective: To investigate the relationships between craniocervical posture and skeletal Class in cephalometric radiographs of adult subjects.Methods: Sixty-five cephalometric radiographs were classified after Delaire, as skeletal Class II and III. The craniocervical posture was evaluated using the variables proposed by Solow (1976) and Rocabado (1983). In order to test the null hypothesis (absence of an association between craniocervical posture and skeletal Class), uni- and multivariate statistical protocols were carried out.Results: Skeletal Class II presented a more posterior rotation of the ramus in relation to the cranium and a more extended head than skeletal Class III. Additionally, significant correlations were observed in Class II individuals between the rotation of mandibular ramus and cervical lordosis, as well as between rotation of mandibular ramus and craniocervical posture.Discussion: The findings of this research may help to understand the contradictory results described in clinical literature about the effect of skeletal class on craniocervical posture. Abstract

Abstract Background Since the introduction of antipsychotics, especially the so called atypicals, the treatment of schizophrenia has shown important improvements. At the present time, it is preferred to label clozapine and other antipsychotics sharing similar profiles as second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs). These medications have been proposed by some experts as a first line treatment for schizophrenia. It is critical to have reliable data about antipsychotic prescription in Mexico and to create management guidelines based on expert meetings and not only on studies carried out by the pharmaceutical industry. Only this approach will help to make the right decisions for the treatment of schizophrenia. Methods A translated version of Rabinowitz's survey was used to evaluate antipsychotic prescription preferences and patterns in Mexican psychiatrists. The survey questionnaire was sent by mail to 200 psychiatrists from public institutions and private practice in Mexico City and Guadalajara, Mexico. Results Recommendations for antipsychotics daily doses at different stages of the treatment of schizophrenia varied widely. Haloperidol was considered as the first choice for the treatment of positive symptoms. On the contrary, risperidone was the first option for negative symptoms. For a patient with a high susceptibility for developing extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS), risperidone was the first choice. It was also considered that SGAs had advantages over typical antipsychotics in the management of negative symptoms, cognitive impairment and fewer EPS. Besides, there was a clear tendency for prescribing typical antipsychotics at higher doses than recommended and inadequate doses for the atypical ones. Conclusions Some of the obstacles for the prescription of SGAs include their high cost, deficient knowledge about their indications and dosage, the perception of their being less efficient for the treatment of positive symptoms and the resistance of some Mexican physicians to change their prescription pattern. It is necessary to reach a consensus, in order to establish and standardize the treatment of schizophrenia, based on the information reported in clinical trials and prevailing economic conditions in Mexico.

Abstract

Tesis (Ingeniero Industrial) El negocio consiste en crear una empresa para la venta, instalación y mantención de muros verdes, con musgo como sustrato esencial. Hoy en día en el mercado nacional existen empresas que venden muros verdes, sin embargo, ninguna de éstas los realiza utilizando un musgo como el sustrato esencial. Hoy se encuentran muchos formatos distintos de muros verdes, desde unos muy ostentosos hasta los del tipo artesanal, utilizando distintos materiales de reciclaje, si bien entre uno y otro, hay un gran número de diferencias, hay un patrón que tienen en común y es el uso de tierra como sustrato esencial, es en este punto en donde se distingue la innovación del proyecto, ya qué, la idea principal es reemplazar ésta por un musgo. Existe un número menor de muros verdes que utiliza el agua como sustrato base (Hidropónico). Los potenciales clientes son las empresas inmobiliarias que construyan departamentos, el atractivo para la inmobiliaria será generar una imagen innovadora respecto del cuidado del medio ambiente, agregando valor a los departamentos por ser más ecológicos que la competencia, cautivando de esta manera al comprador final, el cual además se verá beneficiado por el gran número de beneficios y ventajas que trae consigo el muro.
