101. Evolución de la terapia ocupacional en el campo de la oncología = Occupational therapy evolution in oncology field

Abstract

Resumen:El objetivo de lasiguiente revisión bibliográfica fue conocer la trayectoria de la Terapia Ocupacional (T.O.) en el área oncológica durante las últimas 4 décadas. Para ello se realizó una búsqueda en las bases de datos MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINALH y AMED, con los descriptores Terapia Ocupacional, oncología y cáncer, tanto en el título como en el abstract; se excluyeron los artículos que no estuviesen en idioma inglés o español.Los resultados arrojaron un total de 68 publicaciones de T.O. y cáncer, con una curva sostenida de crecimiento en el número de trabajos publicados. En cuanto a tipo de cáncer predominan las publicaciones que aluden a cáncer en general, aunque destaca el interés por estudiar pacientes con cáncer mamario. La metodología predominante es descriptiva aunque en las últimas 2 décadas los trabajos publicados con metodología cualitativa alcanzaron un 30% del total. Destaca el foco puesto en los pacientes (86% de las publicaciones), aunque también hay trabajos referidos al equipo de salud oncológica (14%). Se comprueba además que la gran mayoría de las publicaciones corresponde a intervenciones de T.O. (80%). En conclusión, pese a que el número total de publicaciones de T.O. en oncología es reducido, nuestra revisión bibliográfica permite afirmar que existe un creciente y sostenido interés por explorar este tipo de patologías e integrar activamente los equipos de salud oncológica Abstract:The aim of following bibliographical review was to know which path of the Occupational Therapy (O.T.) has been in the oncology area during the last 4 decades. A research was carried out in the databases MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINALH and AMED, with key words Occupational Therapy, oncology and cancer, as much in the title as in the abstract; only articles in English or Spanishwere included. Results threw a total of 68 publications of O.T. and cancer, with a sustained curve of growth in the number of published papers. Publications in general cancer are predominant although, they highlight the interest to study breast cancer patients. Predominant methodology is descriptive, although in the last two decades,published studies with qualitative methodology reached 30% of the total.It highlights focus in patients (86% of publications ), although also there are studies withfocus inoncologyteam health care (14%). It is also proven that the great majority of publications correspond to interventions of O. T. (80%). In conclusion, in spite of the fact that total number of publications of O.T. in oncology is reduced, our bibliographical review allows us to affirm that a growing and sustained interest exists to explore this pathology integrating oncology health teams actively.

124. The Mojave Desert: A Martian Analog Site for Future Astrobiology Themed Missions

Abstract

Astrobiological interest in Mars is highlighted by evidence that Mars was once warm enough to have liquid water present on its surface long enough to create geologic formations that could only exist in the presense of extended fluvial periods. These periods existed at the same time life on Earth arose. If life began on Mars as well during this period, it is reasonable to assume it may have adapted to the subsurface as environments at the surface changed into the inhospitable state we find today. If the next series of Mars missions (Mars Science Laboratory, the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter proposed for launch in 2016, and potential near surface sample return) fail to discover either extinct or extant life on Mars, a subsurface mission would be necessary to attempt to "close the book" on the existence of martian life. Mars is much colder and drier than Earth, with a very low pressure CO2 environment and no obvious habitats. Terrestrial regions with limited precipitation, and hence reduced active biota, are some of the best martian low to mid latitude analogs to be found on Earth, be they the Antarctic dry valleys, the Atacama or Mojave Deserts. The Mojave Desert/Death Valley region is considered a Mars analog site by the Terrestrial Analogs Panel of the NSF-sponsored decadal survey; a field guide was even developed and a workshop was held on its applicability as a Mars analog. This region has received a great deal of attention due to its accessibility and the variety of landforms and processes observed relevant to martian studies.

Abstract

Cholesterol accumulation in late endosomes is a prevailing phenotype of Niemann-Pick type C1 (NPC1) mutant cells. Likewise, annexin A6 (AnxA6) overexpression induces a phenotype reminiscent of NPC1 mutant cells. Here, we demonstrate that this cellular cholesterol imbalance is due to AnxA6 promoting Rab7 inactivation via TBC1D15, a Rab7-GAP. In NPC1 mutant cells, AnxA6 depletion and eventual Rab7 activation was associated with peripheral distribution and increased mobility of late endosomes. This was accompanied by an enhanced lipid accumulation in lipid droplets in an acyl-CoA:cholesterol acyltransferase (ACAT)-dependent manner. Moreover, in AnxA6-deficient NPC1 mutant cells, Rab7-mediated rescue of late endosome-cholesterol export required the StAR-related lipid transfer domain-3 (StARD3) protein. Electron microscopy revealed a significant increase of membrane contact sites (MCS) between late endosomes and ER in NPC1 mutant cells lacking AnxA6, suggesting late endosome-cholesterol transfer to the ER via Rab7 and StARD3-dependent MCS formation. This study identifies AnxA6 as a novel gatekeeper that controls cellular distribution of late endosome-cholesterol via regulation of a Rab7-GAP and MCS formation. © 2019, The Author(s).

128. Annexin A6 Is Critical to Maintain Glucose Homeostasis and Survival During Liver Regeneration in Mice

Abstract

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Liver regeneration requires the organized and sequential activation of events that lead to restoration of hepatic mass. During this process, other vital liver functions need to be preserved, such as maintenance of blood glucose homeostasis, balancing the degradation of hepatic glycogen stores, and gluconeogenesis (GNG). Under metabolic stress, alanine is the main hepatic gluconeogenic substrate, and its availability is the rate-limiting step in this pathway. Na(+) -coupled neutral amino acid transporters (SNATs) 2 and 4 are believed to facilitate hepatic alanine uptake. In previous studies, we demonstrated that a member of the Ca(2+) -dependent phospholipid binding annexins, Annexin A6 (AnxA6), regulates membrane trafficking along endo- and exocytic pathways. Yet, although AnxA6 is abundantly expressed in the liver, its function in hepatic physiology remains unknown. In this study, we investigated the potential contribution of AnxA6 in liver regeneration. APPROACH AND RESULTS: Utilizing AnxA6 knockout mice (AnxA6(-/-) ), we challenged liver function after partial hepatectomy (PHx), inducing acute proliferative and metabolic stress. Biochemical and immunofluorescent approaches were used to dissect AnxA6(-/-) mice liver proliferation and energetic metabolism. Most strikingly, AnxA6(-/-) mice exhibited low survival after PHx. This was associated with an irreversible and progressive drop of blood glucose levels. Whereas exogenous glucose administration or restoration of hepatic AnxA6 expression rescued AnxA6(-/-) mice survival after PHx, the sustained hypoglycemia in partially hepatectomized AnxA6(-/-) mice was the consequence of an impaired alanine-dependent GNG in AnxA6(-/-) hepatocytes. Mechanistically, cytoplasmic SNAT4 failed to recycle to the sinusoidal plasma membrane of AnxA6(-/-) hepatocytes 48 hours after PHx, impairing alanine uptake and, consequently, glucose production. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that the lack of AnxA6 compromises alanine-dependent GNG and liver regeneration in mice.

Abstract

The in situ detection of organic material on an extraterrestrial surface requires both effective means of searching a relatively large surface area or volume for possible organic carbon, and a more specific means of identifying and quantifying compounds in indicated samples. Fluorescence spectroscopy fits the first requirement well, as it can be carried out rapidly, with minimal or no physical contact with the sample, and with sensitivity unmatched by any other organic analytical technique. Aromatic organic compounds with know fluorescence signatures have been identified in several extraterrestrial samples, including carbonaceous chondrites, interplanetary dust particles, and Martian meteorites. The compound distributions vary among these sources, however, with clear differences in relative abundances by number of aromatic rings and by degree of alkylation. This relative abundance information, therefore, can be used to infer the source of organic material detected on a planetary surface.

Abstract

Landscape gives urban heritage a context, while urban heritage and urbanscape emerged from the same landscape. Heritage sites are found in both urban setting and hinterland, in landscapes of different complexity and uniqueness. Perceiving relationship between urbanscape and hinterland landscape gives possibility to identify heritage sites which are established simultaneously in urban, cultural and natural landscape. Scope of research is spatially defined in this landscape of strong relationship between urban and natural which define a unique place identity. Relationship between heritage sites and landscape is not recognised, either in spatial planning, management or related tourism. Evaluation is needed to acknowledge relations between heritage sites and urban context, between heritage sites and hinterland landscape, and their interrelations. Lost connections and relationship between heritage sites and landscape of their historical origin and cultural place of the community presence, heritage sites also lose their sense of place, intangible heritage, authenticity and identity of the place. In literature overview, three dimensions of landscape are established: physical, social and symbolic. Research is based on urbanism, spatial planning and architecture point of view, which focus on physical dimension of landscape. Relationship between heritage sites, and urbanscape, and/or landscape is defined in overlapping of physical with social dimension (use and inhabitation of landscape), and overlapping of physical with symbolic dimension (embodiment of meaning in landscape). Research aim is to present meaning of heritage sites, and models for enhancement and revival of heritage sites identity in relation to both urbanscape and hinterland landscape. Proposed case studies are selected from Croatian Eastern Adriatic Coast and Spanish Atlantic coast of Galicia. The research will provide present meaning of heritage site and models of maintaining existing identity through restoring the neglected identity, and through redefining the lost identity of heritage sites in urban and hinterland landscape.

Abstract

Diversity patterns are determined by biogeographic, energetic, and anthropogenic factors, yet few studies have combined them into a large-scale framework in order to decouple and compare their relative effects on fish faunas. Using an empirical dataset derived from 1527 underwater visual censuses (UVC) at 18 oceanic islands (five different marine provinces), we determined the relative influence of such factors on reef fish species richness, functional dispersion, density and biomass estimated from each UVC unit. Species richness presented low variation but was high at large island sites. High functional dispersion, density, and biomass were found at islands with large local species pool and distance from nearest reef. Primary productivity positively affected fish richness, density and biomass confirming that more productive areas support larger populations, and higher biomass and richness on oceanic islands. Islands densely populated by humans had lower fish species richness and biomass reflecting anthropogenic effects. Species richness, functional dispersion, and biomass were positively related to distance from the mainland. Overall, species richness and fish density were mainly influenced by biogeographical and energetic factors, whereas functional dispersion and biomass were strongly influenced by anthropogenic factors. Our results extend previous hypotheses for different assemblage metrics estimated from empirical data and confirm the negative impact of humans on fish assemblages, highlighting the need for conservation of oceanic islands.

Abstract

Document recommendation systems for locating relevant literature have mostly relied on methods developed a decade ago. This is largely due to the lack of a large offline gold-standard benchmark of relevant documents that cover a variety of research fields such that newly developed literature search techniques can be compared, improved and translated into practice. To overcome this bottleneck, we have established the RElevant LIterature SearcH consortium consisting of more than 1500 scientists from 84 countries, who have collectively annotated the relevance of over 180 000 PubMed-listed articles with regard to their respective seed (input) article/s. The majority of annotations were contributed by highly experienced, original authors of the seed articles. The collected data cover 76% of all unique PubMed Medical Subject Headings descriptors. No systematic biases were observed across different experience levels, research fields or time spent on annotations. More importantly, annotations of the same document pairs contributed by different scientists were highly concordant. We further show that the three representative baseline methods used to generate recommended articles for evaluation (Okapi Best Matching 25, Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency and PubMed Related Articles) had similar overall performances. Additionally, we found that these methods each tend to produce distinct collections of recommended articles, suggesting that a hybrid method may be required to completely capture all relevant articles. The established database server located at https://relishdb.ict.griffith.edu.au is freely available for the downloading of annotation data and the blind testing of new methods. We expect that this benchmark will be useful for stimulating the development of new powerful techniques for title and title/abstract-based search engines for relevant articles in biomedical science. © The Author(s) 2019.
