104. Eucalyptus Bark as Source of Bio-oil or Phenolic Compounds

Abstract

Background: Eucalyptus bark and scraps are generated in the production of mediumdensity fiberboard (MDF). An approach aiming to add value to such wastes was studied, following the concepts of circular economy and biomass cascade strategy. Bio-oil and phenolic resin were produced by pyrolysis from two types of biomass, Eucalyptus bark and MDF waste. As is well known, conventional phenolic resins are normally obtained from fossil resources. These products were obtained from the pyrolysis of two types of biomass to reduce environmental waste and dependence on petroleum-based products. Objective: The main objective of the present study was to produce phenolic resin from Eucalyptus wastes, aiming to reduce the fossil dependence on conventional resins used in the production line of MDF. Methods: Fast pyrolysis and slow pyrolysis were employed for bio-oil and phenolic resin production. The bio-oil and resins were characterized with standard lab analyses for their physicochemical properties, while their thermal properties were studied via thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Results: The shear strength of the lap internal bonding of the phenolic resin binders with 19.8% of bio-oil was 2.09, 1.34, and 1.63 MPa under dry, boiler, and soaked conditions, respectively, which was acceptable for panel fabrication and can represent a significant saving in terms of fossil resins and cost reduction. Discussion: According to the results, 1 g medium fraction of bio-oils was equivalent to 1.35 g of conventional phenols, indicating those bio-oils as phenolic structures that could be used as binders. The bio-oil yields for bark and MDF were 40.9 and 25.1, respectively, which indicate a potential for replacing the conventional fossil-based phenolic resin. Conclusion: The results revealed the possibility of replacing conventional fossil-based chemicals with phenolic resin from renewable resources with similar overall properties, replacing about 1/3 of the conventional resin.

119. Sustainable Carbon Derived from Sulfur-Free Lignins for Functional Electrical and Electrochemical Devices

Abstract

Technical lignins, kraft, soda, lignoboost, and hydrolysis lignins were used for the production of carbon particles at different carbonization temperatures, 1000 °C and 1400 °C. The results showed that the lignin source and carbonization temperature significantly influenced the carbon quality and microstructure of the carbon particles. Soda lignin carbonized up to 1400 °C showed higher degree of graphitization and exhibited the highest electrical conductivity of 335 S·m−1, which makes it suitable for applications, such as electromagnetic interference shielding and conductive composite based structural energy storage devices. The obtained carbon particles also showed high surface area and hierarchical pore structure. Kraft lignin carbonized up to 1400 °C gives the highest BET surface area of 646 m2 g−1, which makes it a good candidate for electrode materials in energy storage applications. The energy storage application has been validated in a three-electrode set up device, and a specific capacitance of 97.2 F g−1 was obtained at a current density of 0.1 A g−1 while an energy density of 1.1 Wh kg−1 was observed at a power density of 50 W kg−1. Abstract

Operating the dry reforming reaction photocatalytically presents an opportunity to produce commodity chemicals from two greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide and methane, however, the top-performing photocatalysts presented in the academic literature invariably rely on the use of precious metals. In this work, we demonstrate enhanced photocatalytic dry reforming performance through surface basicity modulation of a Ni-CeO2 photocatalyst by selectively phosphating the surface of the CeO2 nanorod support. An optimum phosphate content is observed, which leads to little photoactivity loss and carbon deposition over a 50-hour reaction period. The enhanced activity is attributed to the Lewis basic properties of the PO43− groups which improve CO2 adsorption and facilitate the formation of small nickel metal clusters on the support surface, as well as the mechanical stability of CePO4. A hybrid photochemical-photothermal reaction mechanism is demonstrated by analyzing the wavelength-dependent photocatalytic activities. The activities, turnover numbers, quantum efficiencies, and energy efficiencies are shown to be on par with other dry-reforming photocatalysts that use noble metals, representing a step forward in understanding how to stabilize ignoble nickel-based dry reforming photocatalysts. The challenges associated with comparing the performance of photocatalysts reported in the academic literature are also commented on. The top-performing dry reforming photocatalysts in the literature rely on the use of precious metals. Abstract

High‐damping acoustic composites with unique sound insulation feature is reported, demonstrating surprisingly stable soundproof properties over a wide bandwidth of frequency (63–6300 Hz) with good mechanical properties. The extraordinary acoustic properties are attributed to the multiscale synergy of lamellar and hollow structures by multifillers adding. The acoustic composites are designed and fabricated through a low‐temperature one‐time rubber mixing process using nitrile butadiene rubber(NBR), chloroprene rubber (CR) as matrix and mica powder (MP), hollow glass beads (HGB), and montmorillonite (MMT) as multifillers. The soundproof mechanism is discussed in detail. Results indicate that the synergism of damping and sound absorption behaviors in the composition has a considerable impact on the acoustic characteristics, which can be controlled by the blending ratio of NBR/CR matrixes and the multiscale structures of MP/HGB/MMT multifillers. The designed multifillers acoustic composites can adapt to broadband engineering noise control including walls in express train constructions, panels of vessel or aircraft cabins, and large transportation pipelines.
