Abstract

Background: Students' understanding of the basic principles of attending the university, classrooms, and patient beds and acquiring the necessary skills to deal with the problems of student life, professors, other students, and patients are essential for their education and learning. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the factors affecting the learning of medical ethics courses based on the role of active teaching methods in better and practical learning of medical ethics and ethics courses. Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on the lecturers of relevant courses and medical students of Kermanshah Medical School in 2018-2019 on 201 people using a convenient sampling method. The data collection tool was a 22-question researcher-made questionnaire on a 5-point Likert scale ranging from no effect (1) to very much (5), whose validity and reliability were confirmed (Cronbach's alpha= 0.8). The collected data were imported to SPSS software version 21 and analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: From the students' point of view, influential factors in learning these courses were clinical memories, professors' experience (80.6%), professor's intimacy with students, scientific mastery (76.6%), professor's clear and expressive expression (76.6%), acquaintance with leading professors and ethical model in university (66%), physical space, classroom facilities, audio-visual facilities (65.8%), review of key points and summaries in the classroom, using animation (55%), educational images and infographics, applications and cyberspace in the classes of medical etiquette and ethics. The opinion of the professors was in line with the students (53.5%). Conclusions: Many factors affecting the learning of medical etiquette and ethics courses were similar to other courses, but there were differences in some cases. Abstract

Objective The purpose of this study was to evaluate the immunohistochemical expression of Ki-67 marker in Mycosis Fungoides (MF) and Lichen Planus (LP) lesions. Methods This cross-sectional analytical study included patients undergoing skin biopsy with their first clinical and pathologic diagnosis of MF and cutaneous LP by Ki-67 immunohistochemistry (IHC). Sixty-two patients with cutaneous LP and MF were studied in two groups of 39 and 23 patients, respectively. Linear regression was used for the possible correlation between age and Ki-67 index (%) in both LP and MF patients. Results The results of this study found that Ki-67 was expressed in 100% of both MF and LP lesions, and no significant correlation was found between Ki-67 and either of the two types of diseases (p=0.606). The results of this study also showed that expression of Ki-67 marker was more than 25% in both types of diseases in 70% of the population, which seems not to be directly related to malignancy. Conclusion IHC with proliferative marker Ki-67 is not a valuable technique for differentiating cutaneous LP from MF lesions alone. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) may be associated with an increase in hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axis activity (HPA AA). We reviewed research comparing morning salivary and blood (serum and plasma) cortisol concentrations of individuals with OSAS to those of healthy controls. Methods: We made a systematic search without any restrictions of the PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases for relevant articles published up to August 25, 2019. Results: Sixteen studies were analyzed in this meta-analysis; five studies compared morning salivary concentrations, five compared serum concentrations, four compared plasma cortisol concentrations, and two compared both salivary and plasma concentrations. In pediatric samples, compared to healthy controls, those with OSAS had significantly lower saliva morning cortisol concentrations (MD = -0.13 µg/dl; 95% CI: 0.21, -0.04; P = 0.003). In contrast, no significant differences were observed for serum cortisol concentrations, plasma cortisol concentrations, or salivary morning cortisol concentrations between adults with and without OSAS (p = 0.61, p = 0.17, p = 0.17). Conclusion: Cortisol concentrations did not differ between adults with OSAS and healthy controls. In contrast, morning salivary cortisol concentrations were lower in children with OSAS, compared to healthy controls. Given that a reduced HPA AA is observed among individuals with chronic stress, it is conceivable that children with OSAS are experiencing chronic psychophysiological stress.

Abstract

This work investigates the use of in situ process analytical technologies, namely, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR FTIR) and ATR UV-vis, coupled with a robust chemometric multivariate analysis approach for the determination of the solubility of ketoprofen in organic solvents within the temperature range of 273.15-303.15 K. Principal component analysis of the raw spectral data is applied along with multiple regression analysis and a stepwise regression procedure as the chemometric approach to build inferential models able to predict solubility data. For each solvent, the constructed models are used for solubility determinations and the results are compared with those previously determined by a gravimetric method. Both in situ FTIR and UV-vis render an accurate prediction of solubility data, with a notably high number of data points enabling the subsequent thermodynamic analysis. However, the accuracy of the solubility rendered from the spectroscopic analysis is not as accurate as by the gravimetric method at low temperatures. In addition, the experimental enthalpies of solution are determined by solution calorimetry and are found to be in a range of 18.6-32.4 kJ/mol in the different solvents. The order of solubility data obtained in the solvents studied is discussed in terms of the strength of the interactions with the ketoprofen carbonyl groups analyzed by the C=O frequency of the FTIR data and based on the solution thermodynamic data obtained. All solutions of the work are relatively nonideal, with activity coefficients deviating from unity and enthalpies of mixing deviating from zero. The thermodynamic analysis and results clearly show that calorimetric enthalpies of solution are theoretically and quantitatively different from the corresponding van't Hoff enthalpies of solution, and a detailed explanation is provided., QC 20211220

Abstract

Background and objective: Inflammation and cell-mediated immunity can have significant roles in different stages of carcinogenesis. The present meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the association between the polymorphisms of IL-8 (-251T/A) and IL-6 (-174G/C) and the risk of oral cancer (OC). Methods: PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Scopus databases were searched until December 18, 2020 without any restrictions. RevMan 5.3 software was used to calculate the results of forest plots (odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs)); CMA 2.0 software was used to calculate funnel plots (Begg’s and Egger’s tests), and SPSS 22.0 was used for the meta-regression analysis. Moreover, trial sequential analysis was conducted to estimate the robustness of the results. Results: Eleven articles including twelve studies were selected for the meta-analysis. The pooled ORs for the association between IL-8 (-251T/A) polymorphism and the risk of OC in the models of A vs. T, AA vs. TT, TA vs. TT, AA + TA vs. TT, and AA vs. TT + TA were 0.97 (p = 0.78), 0.86 (p = 0.55), 0.78 (p = 0.37), 0.83 (p = 0.45), and 1.10 (p = 0.34), respectively. The pooled ORs IL-6 (-174G/C) polymorphism and the risk of OC in the models of C vs. G, CC vs. GG, GC vs. GG, CC + GC vs. GG, and CC vs. GG + GC were 1.07 (p = 0.87), 1.17 (p = 0.82), 1.44 (p = 0.38), 1.28 (p = 0.61), and 0.96 (p = 0.93), respectively. There was no association between IL-8 (-251T/A) polymorphism and OC susceptibility, but the C allele and GC and CC genotypes of IL-6 (-174G/C) polymorphism were associated with the risk of OC based on subgroup analyses, that is to say, the source of control and the genotyping method might bias the pattern of association. Conclusions: The meta-analysis confirmed that there was no association between the polymorphisms of IL-6 (-174G/C) and IL-8 (-251T/A) and the susceptibility of OC. Abstract

(1) Introduction: High sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and CRP are inflammatory biomarkers associated with several inflammatory diseases. In both pediatric and adult individuals with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) higher hs-CRP and CRP were observed, compared to controls. With the present systematic review, meta-analysis and meta-regression we expand upon previous meta-analyses in four ways: (1) We included 109 studies (96 in adults and 13 in children); (2) we reported subgroup and meta-regression analyses in adults with OSA compared to controls on the serum and plasma levels of hs-CRP; (3) we reported subgroup and meta-regression analyses in adults with OSA compared to controls on the serum and plasma levels of CRP; (4) we reported serum and plasma levels of both hs-CRP and CRP in children with OSA, always compared to controls. (2) Materials and Methods: The PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases were searched to retrieve articles published until 31 May 2020, with no restrictions. The data included basic information involving the first author, publication year, country of study, ethnicity of participants in each study, age, BMI, and AHI of both groups, and mean and standard deviation (SD) of plasma and serum levels of CRP and hs-CRP. (3) Results: A total of 1046 records were retrieved from the databases, and 109 studies were selected for the analysis (96 studies reporting the blood levels of hs-CRP/CRP in adults and 13 studies in children). For adults, 11 studies reported plasma hs-CRP, 44 serum hs-CRP, 9 plasma CRP, and 32 serum CRP levels. For children, 6 studies reported plasma hs-CRP, 4 serum hs-CRP, 1 plasma CRP, and 2 serum CRP levels. Compared to controls, the pooled MD of plasma hs-CRP levels in adults with OSA was 0.11 mg/dL (p < 0.00001). Abstract

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to compare the training strategies of executive functions of the brain and mirror neurons on the function of the frontal lobe in boys with behavioral disorders. Method: In this research, a quasi-experimental method of repeated measurement (pre-test, post-test and follow-up) was used with a control group. The statistical population included 9-12-year-old students with behavioral disorders in Tehran. The sample size included 45 boys with behavioral disorders which were selected from the male students of the 7th district of education in Tehran and were divided into two experimental groups and one control group. The tools used in this study included the Stroop test, the Children's Morbid Symptoms Questionnaire (Parent Form, 1991), and the Behavior Disorder Diagnosis Questionnaire. The data was analyzed using repeated measure analysis of variance with SPSS 22 software. Results: The intervention of educational strategies of executive functions had a positive and significant effect on the performance of the frontal lobe and its components, including cognitive flexibility and pre-test inhibitory response components in the post-test and follow-up phases, but it did not affect the selective attention component. Also, teaching mirror neuron strategies had a positive and significant effect on the function of the frontal lobe and its components. Conclusion: The interventions of both strategies have been effective in improving frontal function, but mirror neuron strategies have had a more effective role on the frontal function and its components. Abstract

Background Some types of beta-human papillomavirus (β-HPV) may be one of the probable causes of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in transplant recipients. β-HPVs are linked to SCC in the literature with small number of subjects. Aim Herein, the first meta-analysis was carried out on the association between β-HPVs and cutaneous SCC in immunosuppressed patients. Methods A systematic search was carried out in the PubMed and Scopus databases up to December 2018. The odds ratio (OR) were calculated by RevMan 5.3 software and the event rate (ER) by Comprehensive Meta-Analysis 2.0 software with a 95% confidence interval (CI). Results A total of 1250 records were identified through the two databases, but at last eleven studies were included in the meta-analysis that they were published from 1989 to 2018. The results showed a significantly high prevalence of β-HPVs in cutaneous SCC patients (ER = 69.1%; 95%CI: 58.7%, 77.8%). In addition, the prevalence of overall β-HPVs and β-HPVs of 5, 8, 9, 17, 49, 75, and 76 in immunosuppressed cutaneous SCC patients was significantly higher compared with controls. Conclusions The findings of the present meta-analysis support the hypothesis that β-HPV may play a role in cutaneous SCC development in immunosuppressed individuals.
