Abstract

Adjoint modeling is a powerful tool that is now widely used in meteorology for computing gradients in the context of data assimilation. We present in this article the use of an automatic differentiation tool developed at INRIA, O∂yssee, for the case of Air Pollution Modeling. We simulate a reduced kinetic scheme (16 species, 12 reactions) describing the evolution of tropospheric ozone. We focus on some particular points such as the influence of the slow-fast behaviour of the chemical models.

140. Idealised numerical simulations of aerodynamical roughness lenght effects on sea breeze characteristics

Abstract

A two-dimensional hydrostatic meso-gamma-scale model is used to study possible effects of a step change in roughness on the daytime sea breeze (SB). Idealised numerical simulations with the length of aerodynamical roughness (z0) ranging from 0.05m to 1.0 m and by an increase of 0.05 m in all land surface grid points were made. Two z0 effects could be pointed out: an increase in the mixing process and a reduction in the wind speeds in the surface layer. An increase of both heights and magnitudes of the SB circulation, caused by a vertical extension of the turbulent field, followed by a faster inland penetration of the SB. The second effect resulting from a successive increase in z0 values was a retardation of the sea breeze front near the ground, visible in its slope. This effect allowed the already faster inland penetration of the marine air high above the land.
