From the 1910s-40s, the Chilean Boy Scouts published essays, poems and short stories that expressed an epic cosmovision. Scoutista literature culminated with Jacobo Danke's novel Hatusimé (1947). Though it is primarily epic, Hatusimé concludes with a novel-like worldview when its adventurer succumbs to the angst of his homelessness and drifts into an existentialist modernity. Because the novel genre expresses a modern worldview unharmonious with epic forms, Hatusimé conflictingly reveals the limits of scoutista literature's ability to explore a modern Chile. The article highlights the gekiga publications and English translations of the works of Japanese cartoonist Tatsumi Yoshihiro by publisher Drawn and Quarterly and his contribution to the shaping of the manga market in Canada. It discusses the incorporation of Tatsumi's works in discourses surrounding literary-oriented alternative comics and global comics, the transnational and transcultural distribution of his work among English-speaking audience, and his influence on younger cartoonists.

This article explores representations of mothering practices in Songs of the Suitcase (1998) by second-generation Italian Australian writer Anna Maria Dell'oso. This collection of short stories devotes special attention to the interlinks between mothering and mediation among culturally diverse groups in modern Australian society. Theoretical frameworks provided by scholars in translation, interpreting and child language brokering are used to shed light on how Dell'oso succeeds in voicing Italian Australian women migrants' abilities to negotiate and mediate between various cultural groups, ethnicities and generations, especially when it comes to mothering and maternal care. How does Dell'oso configure mothering as the most invaluable caregiving practice, vis-à-vis global mobility and circulation of values? How does she represent and problematize the role of mothers and daughters in modern Australia? How does she challenge families' views on how to mother? How does she interpret the role of the mediator of cultural memories and family beliefs? By displaying the author's fictional alter egos as the most privileged sites of exploration, Dell'oso reflects on the impact of migration upon mothering practices and the mother-daughter dyad. Finally, she offers thought-provoking views on how Italian Australian mothering practices, as social values, are confronted with and fashioned by ever-changing communities of migrants. In my paper, I see hybridisation as the mixing of multiple, often disparate elements. This term is used in literary studies mainly in connection with postmodernism and its other features (intertextuality, fragmentation, eclecticism, etc.). In Slovak post-revolutionary prose, the boundaries between arts, media, types or genres are often crossed, and there is an increasing number of works that oscillate between non-fiction and fiction, biography and fiction, journalism (reportage) and fiction, popular and artistic literature, or between the arts (visual, film and literary arts). In my paper, I will discuss prose published in 2019-2020: Katarína Kucbelová's book Čepiec, Ivana Gibová's comic short story collection Eklektik Bastard, Veronika Šikulová's non-novel Tremolo ostinato, and Nataša Holinová's prose Prípad starej dámy, which each in a different way break the boundaries of genres or artistic literature. In particular, I will be interested in whether the hybridisation in the analysed prose works, i.e. whether an aesthetically effective form emerges through the crossing of practices from different fields. Based on an analysis of six texts from three anthologies of Guatemalan short stories, I endeavor to understand some of the representative features of the poetics of 20th and 21st century writers in relation to the concerns they reveal, in keeping with the times in which they were written. In this sense, I also try to encourage dialogue between the diachronic vision of the first anthology with the regionalism of the second, while recognizing the newest writers of the third anthology. Literature, throughout the ages, persists and is realized through its essence, intertextuality. Through the essential phenomenon of intertextuality, literature is reshaped and recreated, so through the ages, it is intertextually recreated. This phenomenon, which has existed as long as human communication has existed, forces us in a way to accept what Eco also accepted when he talks about Borges and his anxiety about influence, saying that: “the most important thing is that books talk to each other.” In context, themes, motives, and times are intertextually connected, intertextually connected, in the novel One Hundred Years of Solitude (Gabriel García Márquez, 1967) and the short story collection Love in the Time of Facebook (Arlind Farizi, 2019) In contemporary prose, specifically in the postmodern collection of short stories Love in the Time of Facebook, intermediality also works, expressed through Internet communication, that is, through e-mail. The classic love letters are switched, they are replaced by electronic messages - chats, through which they create short stories in which “the narration develops with dramatic specificity, with the temporal acceleration of the action, with the pace of the text”, similar to the dynamic modern world, in constant, uninterrupted creation, in which only possibilities work. The article focuses on Dorothy Macardle's collection of short stories Earth-Bound to complicate the traditional understanding of the Civil War (1922-1923) as a catastrophe subject to enforced silence or the aporia of representation. This despite the fact that Macardle's stories are not event-centric nor realistic accounts of the conflict: they are set before 1922, during difficult periods for the Irish such as in times of famine or the Anglo-Irish War, and, throughout the collection, realism combines with the supernatural, multiple temporalities mingle, and there is a peculiar co-dependency of politics and aesthetics. However, I contend that it is precisely by displacing the Civil War from her stories and by replacing it with narratives of other, 'minor' tragedies that Macardle thematically foregrounds the defining characteristics of internecine conflict: the collapse of the bonds of solidarity and the consequences of that for the most vulnerable. Story after story, through narratives of 'slow violence' dispersed across time and space, readers get a sense of a slow erosion of the Irish community, predating the war and then exploding in the destruction of the conflict, but also a sense that violence - its continuous perpetration now and in the future - is not inevitable. Some of the tales in Earth-Bound have the potential, through estrangement and shifts in setting, to move their readers to think critically about the status quo and possibly act on and change it. Hence, my article first explores the supposed unrepresentability of the Civil War; second, by comparing the stories in Earth-Bound to the more celebrated ones by Frank O'Connor and Sean O'Faolain, it intends to highlight the peculiarity and originality of Macardle's writing. Lakshminath Bezbaruah is the father of Assamese Short Stories. Along with the contemporary Assamese society, the background of his stories also included the population of Orissa and Bengal. By inventing stories out of those backgrounds, Bezbaruah has painted the joys and sorrows, the laughter and tears, and the ups and downs of the men and women of his time. Among his subjects, Bezbaruah has given special attention to his female characters. Many of his stories highlight the issues of woman rights, woman's independent identity and woman's position in a patriarchal social structure. Our discussion here throws light on the female characters reflected in these eight stories, namely 'Bhadari', 'Jayanti', 'Patmugi', 'Laliti Kakoti', 'Jene Sur Tene Taangun', 'Malati', 'Xeuti' and 'Sur'. This article examines how authors with migrant backgrounds address 'othering' and exclusion and the consequences of these processes in Finland. The article elicits various viewpoints on the so-called insidious trauma and explicates harmful interaction in everyday encounters that may give rise to insidious trauma. The research material includes three autobiographical works, one novel, and one collection of short stories. The material was analyzed through qualitative content analysis. In the material, othering appears as exoticization or categorization of 'the other,' based on any difference or assumption of difference. The means of exclusion can be direct or indirect; rejection, silence or silencing, ignoring, language exclusion, microaggressions, and institutionalized exclusionary discourses. The repetitive and continuous experiences of othering and exclusion may cause an insidious trauma and hinder the development of agency, cultural citizenship, and belonging for people entering new communities. This study concerns itself with Joanna Gavins's text world theory (Gavins, Text world theory: An introduction, Edinburgh University Press, 2007) and examines its benefits for the analysis of point of view in a literary text. It works on Alice Munro's "Runaway" (Munro, Runaway: Stories, A Douglas Gibson Book, 2004) the complicated narration of which is filtered through the floating perspective facilitated by free indirect discourse. While the text-world level proposed by Gavins's theory reveals the many biases and prejudices of the floating point of view, the discourse-world level opens up a space to investigate how readerly cognition is cued and prompted by the text. This study investigates Munro's character representation through the boulomaic, deontic, and epistemic modal-worlds in an attempt to reveal how the floating narrator hides her biases and prejudices behind a gesture to neutrality and omnipresence. This essay argues that Lesley Nneka Arimah's collection of short stories, What It Means When a Man Falls from the Sky, evokes para-worlds that reveal and contend with the world and its norms. Examining the collection's entwinement of magical, mythical, and animist modes with science, technology, and innovation, the essay shows how Arimah's work creates its own metagenre, which functions as a paranormal frame that disrupts the common sense of existing interpretive frameworks of progress and difference. The paranormal in Arimah's work is a space where the illegible significance of Blackness exists. These para-worlds, the essay contends, are paranormal because they function as parallel, ancillary, and barricading structures that reveal the spatial and temporal continuums that order the world. Viewing the norm as the world-constituting structures instantiated in 1492, the essay contends that Arimah's para-world functions as a continuum to reveal the ever-present structures of violence.
