125. Using Multiple Intelligences to Increase Reading Comprehension in English and Math.

Abstract

An action research project described a program for expanding multiple intelligences to increase reading comprehension in both English and math. The targeted population consisted of ninth, tenth, and eleventh grade students located in a south suburb of Chicago, Illinois. The problem of reading comprehension was documented through data revealing large number of students unable to meet the demands of the Illinois Goal Assessment Program (IGAP), local assessments, and classroom activities. Probable cause data revealed students living in low economic conditions, high mobility rates, natural attrition, and poor attendance. The data also indicated students' poor social skills and lack of self-discipline. Additionally, the data revealed a lack of teacher training in multiple intelligences and innovative teaching strategies. A review of solution strategies and analysis of the problem setting resulted in the selection of two major categories of intervention: incorporation of multiple intelligence strategies combined with cooperative learning techniques in English and math units, and the implementation of weekly student observation sheets and anecdotal reflections. Post intervention data indicated an increase in student reading comprehension skills in English and math, and an increase in student learning expectations. Abstract

The effects of the stochastic magnetic field in a plasma center produced by electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD) on transport have been revealed. Because the electron temperature profile is flat in the core region, in the case of counter-directed ECCD (ctr-ECCD) against the toroidal magnetic field, the magnetic field is stochastic in the core region with rotational transform ᵼ ∼ 1/3. The particle diffusion coefficient of the ctr-ECCD plasma is approximately 20 times as large as that of the plasma without the stochastic magnetic field produced by co-directed ECCD (co-ECCD) at the maximum. 131. '[D]onning the Garb of a Pit Girl again': Imagining the 'Pit Brow Lassie' in Late-Victorian Fiction.

Abstract

This article analyses various representations of the figure of the 'pit brow lassie' with a particular emphasis on two novels; Frances Hodgson Burnett's That Lass O' Lowrie's (1877) and John Monk Foster's A Pit Brow Lassie (1889). It argues that pit brow women provided a focus for discussions of the interplay of class and gender roles in Victorian Britain. The article begins by tracing the history of attitudes towards women's employment in the mines in Victorian Britain and the role which visual representations of pit brow women played in the campaigns for and against their employment. It then analyses the way in which the representation of the pit brow women in That Lass O' Lowrie's shifts from an ideologeme of pity to one of respect and self-respect. It argues that Burnett's novel is, in part, a re-purposing of earlier 'Condition of England' novels with gender replacing class as the main axis of social reconciliation. As part of this re-purposing it argues that while the novel uses the perceived deficiencies of working-class women to justify the agency of their middle-class counterparts, it also represents its working-class heroine as an object of middle-class desire. Next the article explores John Monk Foster's A Pit Brow Lassie highlighting the ways in which it both normalizes and defends the work of pit brow women and, in contrast to Burnett's novel, makes female labour integral to the development of its plot. It analyses the ways in which Foster's representation of pit brow women differs from Burnett's and argues that these differences arise from a combination of generic, publication and authorial factors. However, despite these differences the article argues that Foster's novel also eschews the ideologeme of pity in favour of respect/self-respect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The analysis method of the Motional Stark Effect (MSE) diagnostic to measure the rotational transform and current profiles in the Large Helical Device has been improved. This was done by using the Variational Moments Equilibrium Code to calculate an equilibrium database for various pressure profiles and current profiles. This method looks for the radial profile of the rotational transform in the equilibrium database that gives the best fit to the polarization angle profiles measured with the MSE diagnostic. This analysis improves the measurements of rotational transform, especially near the magnetic axis, where the sensitivity of the polarization angle measurements becomes low and the uncertainty due to error in the estimation of the Pfirsch–Schlüter current becomes large. The radial profiles of the rotational transform and current profiles for Electron Cyclotron Current Drive and Neutral Beam Current Drive are obtained in the new analysis method with a sufficiently high accuracy to discuss the discrepancy of the current density profiles between the measurements and the calculations.

Abstract

The effect of electron cyclotron heating (ECH) and current drive (ECCD) on energetic-particle (EP)-driven magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) modes is studied in the helical devices LHD, TJ-II and Heliotron J. We demonstrate that EP-driven MHD modes, including Alfvén eigenmodes (AEs) and energetic particle modes (EPMs), can be controlled by ECH/ECCD. In the LHD device, which has a moderate rotational transform and a high magnetic shear, co-ECCD enhances toroidal AEs (TAEs) and global AEs (GAEs), while counter-ECCD stabilizes them, which improves the neutron rate compared with the co-ECCD case. Counter-ECCD decreases the core rotational transform and increases the magnetic shear, strengthening the continuum damping on the shear Alfvén continua (SAC). In the TJ-II device, which has a high rotational transform, moderate magnetic shear and low toroidal field period, helical AEs (HAEs) appear when the HAE frequency gap of the SAC is changed by counter-ECCD combined with a bootstrap current and NB-driven current. On the other hand, both co- and counter-ECCD are effective in stabilizing GAEs and EPMs in the Heliotron J device, which has a low rotational transform and low magnetic shear. The experimental results indicate that the magnetic shear has a stabilizing effect regardless of its sign. Modelling analysis using the FAR3d code shows that the growth rates are reduced by both co- and counter-ECCD in Heliotron J, reproducing the show that the effect depends on the magnetic configuration. In Heliotron J, some modes are stabilized experimental results. ECH only also affects EP-driven MHD modes, and the experimental results with an increase in ECH power in the low-bumpiness magnetic configuration, while some modes are destabilized in the high- and medium-bumpiness magnetic configurations.
