Abstract

Low-energy electron microscopy (LEEM) and metastable electron emission microscopy (MEEM) were used to study images and local electron spectra of an oxide pattern on Si(100) in which energy-filtered images were seen for the first time. Results of the study revealed that LEEM provides averaged information on several surface layers while MEEL gives the information on the outermost surface layer selectively. Other observations are discussed.

Abstract

In recent years, the elderly population has been growing, and subsequently, the number of patients complaining of xerostomia symptoms has been increasing. In this study, we focused on the moisturizing effects of trehalose. We developed a trehalose tablet as a novel supplement for xerostomia and compared it to a sucrose tablet for verification of its moisturizing effects. A total of 72 healthy female subjects were randomly assigned to receive either the sucrose or trehalose tablet, followed by the other. Subjects received a 14-question survey soon after each tablet had dissolved completely in the mouth. For objective evaluation of the tablets, compression and solubility tests were performed. Based on sensory (subjective) evaluation, the trehalose tablets provided significantly more moisturization in the mouth and a sense of salivation than the sucrose tablets. Therefore, trehalose may confer a greater effect on moisturizing the mouth than sucrose. In addition, the trehalose tablets were about 2/3 as soft and dissolved 2 to 3 times more quickly than the sucrose tablets. These subjective and objective evaluations suggest that trehalose is a better supplement for maintaining oral moisture than sucrose, and may therefore be useful as a therapeutic supplement. The use of this convenient and safe therapeutic supplement could help improve the quality of life of elderly individuals who are suffering from xerostomia by allowing them to better enjoy meals and conversation., 近年，高齢者の急激な増加に伴い，口腔乾燥症の症状を訴える患者も増加の一途を辿っている。本研究では，トレハロースの保湿効果に着目し，口腔乾燥のための新しい治療補助食品として，トレハロースタブレットを開発した。保湿効果の比較の為に蔗糖のタブレットも同時に開発し，効果について主観的，客観的に検証を行った。実験には72名の健常な女性に参加して頂き，タブレットを試食して口腔内で完全に溶解して消失してから，その後14項目のアンケート調査を実施した。また，タブレットの物性について客観的評価として，圧縮試験及び溶解度試験も合わせて実施した。主観的評価結果から，トレハロースが蔗糖と比較して，有意に口腔内の保湿に影響を与えている可能性が示された。また，客観的評価より，トレハロースタブレットは，蔗糖タブレットと比較して2/3程度軟らかく，口腔内で2～3倍早く溶解することが示された。これらの結果より，トレハロースタブレットは，口腔内の保湿に寄与することが示唆された。このことから，口腔内の乾燥で悩む高齢者に対しても効果が期待でき，食事や会話への楽しみ，QOLの向上へと繋げていく可能性が示唆された。

Abstract

The giant magnetoresistive (GMR) reader nonlinear response in perpendicular magnetic recording should be characterized and studied for the impact on bit-error-rate (BER) performance, because a waveform of perpendicular recording is influenced by GMR nonlinearity differently from longitudinal recording. In this study, the read/write characteristics and BER performance under the influence of GMR nonlinearity were investigated. For a GMR saturation parameter, the amplitude ratio of the fifth harmonic spectrum of isolated patterns to same spectrum of di-bit pattern was measured. This saturation parameter is a good indicator to estimate GMR saturation. GMR asymmetry has a different impact on BER performance from GMR saturation. The raw isolated waveform of perpendicular recording is inappropriate to estimate GMR asymmetry because it does not indicate an accurate dc-ground level with the low-frequency cutoff channel. A specific test patterns which can provide dc-ground level, was found. The measured asymmetry of this test pattern correlates closely with the asymmetry of measured GMR transfer curves. The peak shift of a differential waveform is also a good indicator to estimate GMR asymmetry. Signal processing simulation and some measurement results showed BER performance is influenced by GMR nonlinear response. The impact of GMR nonlinearity on BER depends on their feature. GMR asymmetry has a strong correlation with BER performance. Index Terms--Asymmetry, giant magnetoresistive (GMR), nonlinear response, perpendicular magnetic recording, saturation.

Abstract

The absorbances of different concentrations of Fe2+, Fe3+ and H2O2 were investigated by UV-visible spectrophotometry without separating the substances. The law of complex formation was studied by considering changes in the UV-vis spectra of mixtures of these three substances. The results show that upon eliminating the influence of the substrate, an iron-based complex was present in the Fenton reaction, which exhibited substantial absorbance from 190 to 500 nm. Therefore, the presence of an unknown complex in the Fenton oxidation process was verified and its concentration varied with a change in the concentration of hydrogen peroxide. This study provides a strong foundation for further studies into the mechanism of traditional hydroxyl radical theory of the Fenton reaction.

Abstract

Background/Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate whether exogenous dehydrocholic acid (DHCA) was useful to enhance the delineation of the biliary tree. Methodology: Our study population comprised 14 patients. Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography was acquired before and after the administration of DHCA. Two different MRCP snap shot techniques were applied: thick-slab two-dimensional (2D) (coronal) single shot turbo spin echo T2-weighted sequences and multisection thin-slab, 2D (coronal) single shot turbo spin echo T2-weighted sequences with three-dimensional (3D) maximum intensity projection (MIP) post processing. Volume rendering was prepared based on the source images, and the pixel size was visually adjusted to the biliary area of MRCP to measure the biliary tree volume. Results: DHCA increased the bile duct volume in 13 of the 14 patients. It provided a better visualization of the biliary tree in 11 patients. The three patients without improvement in visualization included 1 patient with liver cirrhosis secondary to portoenterostomy for congenital biliary dilatation and 2 patients with cholecystectomy who had the bile ducts filled with bile by the time of the ministration. Conclusions: It was suggested that administration of DHCA could enhance the delineation of the biliary tree on MRCP images.

Methodology: DHCA is a cholagogue which produces an immediate effect by acting directly on liver cells. Its choleretic effect is strong, appearing 1 to 3 minutes after intravenous injection, reaching the maximum level in 20 to 30 minutes. Our study population comprised 9 patients. Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) was acquired before and after the administration of DHCA. Two different MRCP snap-shot techniques were applied: thick-slab two-dimensional (2D) (coronal) singleshot turbo spin echo T2-weighted sequences and multisection thin-slab, 2D (coronal) single shot turbo spin echo T2-weighted sequences with threedimensional (3D) maximum intensity projection (MIP) post processing. Results: DHCA provided a better visualization of the anastomotic site in 7 patients (77.8%). The two patients without improvement in visualization of anastomotic site included 1 patient with liver cirrhosis secondary to portoenterostomy for ongenital biliary dilatation and 1 patient, who was not eligible for the evaluation because of motion artifact caused by the difficulty of breath holding motion artifact. Conclusions: It was suggested that administration of DHCA could enhance the elineation of the anastomotic site on MRCP images.

Abstract

Intraductal papillary neoplasm of the bile duct (IPNB) is a rare variant of bile duct tumors characterized by papillary growth within the bile duct lumen and is regarded as a biliary counterpart of intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm of the pancreas. IPNBs display a spectrum of premalignant lesion towards invasive cholangiocarcinoma. The most common radiologic findings for IPNB are bile duct dilatation and intraductal masses. The major treatment of IPNB is surgical resection. Ultrasonography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance image, and cholangiography are usually performed to assess tumor location and extension. Cholangioscopy can confirm the histology and assess the extent of the tumor including superficial spreading along the biliary epithelium. However, pathologic diagnosis by preoperative biopsy cannot always reflect the maximum degree of atypia, because IPNBs are often composed of varying degrees of cytoarchitectural atypia. IPNBs are microscopically classified into four epithelial subtypes, such as pancreatobiliary, intestinal, gastric, and oncocytic types. Most cases of IPNB are IPN with high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia or with an associated invasive carcinoma. The histologic types of invasive lesions are either tubular adenocarcinoma or mucinous carcinoma. Although several authors have investigated molecular genetic changes during the development and progression of IPNB, these are still poorly characterized and controversial.

Abstract

The electron-stimulated desorption (ESD) spectroscopy is very sensitive to hydrogen. We have developed a time-offlight type ESD (TOF-ESD) analyzer which enables us to detect hydrogen and oxygen ions desorbed from solid surfaces. A pencil type electron gun which provides a fine-focused electron beam has been combined with the TOF-ESD to analyze surface distribution of hydrogen on the surfaces. Firstly pulsed beam was used at 600 eV to analyze hydrogen distribution on Cu 600-meshes at the magnifications of 450 and 2000. Obtained images are clearly realized a grid meshes as same as scanning electron images by the lateral resolution of 1 μm. A previously lithographed pattern on the silicon surface covered with atomic hydrogen was also realized by the scanning analysis of hydrogen.
