PURPOSE As cancer surgery restarts after the first COVID-19 wave, health care providers urgently require data to determine where elective surgery is best performed. This study aimed to determine whether COVID-19–free surgical pathways were associated with lower postoperative pulmonary complication rates compared with hospitals with no defined pathway. PATIENTS AND METHODS This international, multicenter cohort study included patients who underwent elective surgery for 10 solid cancer types without preoperative suspicion of SARS-CoV-2. Participating hospitals included patients from local emergence of SARS-CoV-2 until April 19, 2020. At the time of surgery, hospitals were defined as having a COVID-19–free surgical pathway (complete segregation of the operating theater, critical care, and inpatient ward areas) or no defined pathway (incomplete or no segregation, areas shared with patients with COVID-19). The primary outcome was 30-day postoperative pulmonary complications (pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, unexpected ventilation). RESULTS Of 9,171 patients from 447 hospitals in 55 countries, 2,481 were operated on in COVID-19–free surgical pathways. Patients who underwent surgery within COVID-19–free surgical pathways were younger with fewer comorbidities than those in hospitals with no defined pathway but with similar proportions of major surgery. After adjustment, pulmonary complication rates were lower with COVID-19–free surgical pathways (2.2% v 4.9%; adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 0.62; 95% CI, 0.44 to 0.86). This was consistent in sensitivity analyses for low-risk patients (American Society of Anesthesiologists grade 1/2), propensity score–matched models, and patients with negative SARS-CoV-2 preoperative tests. The postoperative SARS-CoV-2 infection rate was also lower in COVID-19–free surgical pathways (2.1% v 3.6%; aOR, 0.53; 95% CI, 0.36 to 0.76). CONCLUSION Within available resources, dedicated COVID-19–free surgical pathways should be established to provide safe elective cancer surgery during current and before future SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks.

Feature extraction of electronic nose (e-nose) output response aims to reduce information redundancy so that the e-nose performance can be improved. The use of different sensor types and sample targets can affect the optimization of feature extraction. This research used six types of metal oxide sensors, TGS 813, 822, 825, 826, 2620, and 2611 in an e-nose system to detect three types of herbal drink. Five kinds of feature extraction methods on the original response curve in a steady-state response were used, namely, baseline difference, logarithmic difference, local normalization, global normalization, and global autoscaling. The results of feature extraction were fed into a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) system. As a result, global autoscaling and normalization had the highest total sum of the first and second principal components of 96.96%, followed by local normalization (90.18%), logarithm, and baseline difference (88.92% and 79.26%, respectively). The validation of PCA results was performed using a Backpropagation Neural Network (BPNN). The highest accuracy, 97.44%, was obtained from the global autoscaling method, followed by global normalization, local normalization, logarithm, and baseline difference, with an accuracy level of 94.87%, 92.31 %, 89.74%, and 82.05%, respectively. This demonstrates that the selection of the feature extraction method can affect the classification results and improve e-nose performance.

Ultraviolet communication (UVC) serves as a promising supplement to share the responsibility for the overloads in conventional wireless communication systems. One challenge for UVC lies in inter-symbol-interference (ISI), which combined with the ambient noise, contaminates the received signals and thereby deteriorates the communication accuracy. Existing coherent signal detection schemes (e.g. maximum likelihood sequence detection, MLSD) require channel state information (CSI) to compensate the channel ISI effect, thereby falling into either a long overhead and large computational complexity, or poor CSI acquisition that further hinders the detection performance. Non-coherent schemes for UVC, although capable of reducing the complexity, cannot provide high detection accuracy in the face of ISI. In this work, we propose a novel non-coherent paradigm via the exploration of the UV signal features that are insensitive to the ISI. By optimally weighting and combining the extracted features to minimize the bit error rate (BER), the optimally-weighted non-coherent detection (OWNCD) is proposed, which converts the signal detection with ISI into a binary detection framework with a heuristic decision threshold. As such, the proposed OWNCD avoids the complex CSI estimation and guarantees the detection accuracy. Compared to the state-of-the-art MLSD in the cases of static and time-varying CSI, the proposed OWNCD can gain ∼1 dB and 8 dB in signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) at the 7% overhead FEC limit (BER of 4.5×10 −3 , respectively, and can also reduce the computational complexity by 4 order of magnitude

The complexity of social-ecological systems (SES) is rooted in the outcomes of node activities connected by network topology. Thus far, in network dynamics research, the connectivity degree (CND), indicating how many nodes are connected to a given node, has been the dominant concept. However, connectivity focuses only on network topology, neglecting the crucial relation to node activities, and thereby leaving system outcomes largely unexplained. Inspired by the phenomenon of “consensus of wills and coordination of activities” often observed in disaster risk management, we propose a new concept of network characteristic, the consilience degree (CSD), aiming to measure the way in which network topology and node activities together contribute to system outcomes. The CSD captures the fact that nodes may assume different states that make their activities more or less compatible. Connecting two nodes with in/compatible states will lead to outcomes that are un/desirable from the perspective of the SES in question. We mathematically prove that the CSD is a generalized CND, and the CND is a special case of CSD. As a general, fundamental concept, the CSD can facilitate the development of a new framework of network properties, models, and theories that allows us to understand patterns of network behavior that cannot be explained in terms of connectivity alone. We further demonstrate that a co-evolutionary mechanism can naturally improve the CSD. Given the generality of co-evolution in SES, we argue that the CSD is an inherent attribute rather than an artificial concept, which underpins the fundamental importance of the CSD to the study of SES.

Mixed mono- and tributyrate glycerides have been used for effective delivery of butyrate to the gut to benefit broilers. However, limited information is available on the efficacy of butyrate glycerides individually and in combination with different levels and feeding schedules. The present study has first investigated the effects of monobutyrin at inclusion levels of zero, 500, 1,000, 2,000, and 3,000 ppm on the performance of broilers, and second, the effects of its combination with tributyrin. In the monobutyrin trial, there were no overall significant differences in average daily gain or feed efficiency. However, 2,000 ppm birds had significantly decreased abdominal fat deposition compared to controls (P ≤ 0.05), and the breast muscle deposition increased in a dose-response manner to the supplementation of monobutyrin (P ≤ 0.05). The combination trial tested 5 treatment groups: control, 500 ppm tributyrin + 500 ppm monobutyrin (5T5M), 500 ppm tributyrin + 500 ppm monobutyrin staggered (5T5Ms), 500 ppm tryibutyrin + 2,000 ppm monobutyrin (5T20M), or 500 ppm tributyrin + 2,000 ppm monobutyrin staggered (5T20Ms). In staggered groups, birds were fed tributyrin for one wk followed by 2 wk of monobutyrin, after which the feed was butyrate glyceride free. The non-staggered groups had constant inclusions levels through the 5 weeks. There were no significant differences in average daily gain or feed efficiency among groups. At 5 wk of age, all treatment groups except for 5T5Ms had significantly lower relative abdominal fat weight compared to control birds (P ≤ 0.05), although 5T5Ms birds demonstrated a trend for a decrease (P = 0.095). Relative breast muscle weight was significantly increased only in 5T5M birds over control birds at 5 wk of age (P ≤ 0.05). Serum biochemistry revealed significant changes in factors relating to muscle growth and fat deposition (P ≤ 0.05). These results indicate a consistent shift in lipid metabolism with the addition of butyrate glycerides and that the deposition of breast muscle may be highest with the incorporation of butyrate glycerides at a moderate level for the duration of development.

In this letter, we investigate the bit error rate (BER) performance of a cooperative relaying transmission scheme for wireless nanosensor networks in the Terahertz (THz) Band. We consider nanosensor networks comprising several graphene-based devices deployed at the nanoscale. Both amplify-and-forward (AF) and decode-and-forward (DF) relaying modes are studied. We consider a line-of-sight (LOS) channel model in the THz band which takes into account both spreading loss and molecular absorption loss. Given the high path loss and level of noise from significant random fluctuations through the THz channel, relay assisted schemes offer advantages in terms of significant performance improvements. To quantify the likely benefits, we derive the predicted bit error rate (BER) of the proposed scheme. We conduct a simulation of the proposed relay schemes based on the THz LOS channel model utilizing a Monte-Carlo method. The results obtained show that a performance improvement of 2.2 dB for AF and of 5 dB for DF is achievable at a target bit error rate (BER) of 10-5.

This paper discusses the effect of receiver field-of-view (FOV) on the power distribution and bandwidth performance of short-range diffuse line-of-sight (LOS) links. Monte Carlo simulation is used to investigate the performance of the links for the on-axis and off-axis scenarios in clear, coastal and turbid water. In both clear and coastal water, the receiver FOV has little influence on the on-axis power reception but has a significant effect on the off-axis power reception where there is an approximately 30 dB gain (off-axis) when the receiver FOV is increased from 10° to 180°. However, in turbid water receiver FOV significantly affects the power received both on-axis and off-axis, with gains of 15-18 dB for the same change in receiver FOV. In terms of bandwidth performance, the FOV only affects the on-axis bandwidth in clear and coastal water but not in turbid water.

Underwater optical wireless communications (UOWC) offers higher data rates, lower latency and high bandwidths for underwater communications. However, UOWC systems suffer from significant scattering and absorption introduced by the channel and may also be blocked by countless obstructions and obstacles under the water. Thus, in this paper, the characteristics of a non-line-of-sight (NLOS) UOWC link with multiple scattering based on Monte Carlo simulation is considered. We address the channel response with different channel modulation schemes, include variation in the receiver field of view (FOV) and then proceed to evaluate the bit error rate (BER) and throughput of the system. In addition to a range of modulation methods, variation in the receiver bandwidth is also included. It is seen that distances over 80 meters are possible, providing BER values of 10−4 or better and throughput of 2.1 Mbps. This demonstrates that NLOS-UOWC offers a route to transmission at higher speeds than incumbent technologies in areas such as inshore environmental monitoring or oil exploration.

Introduction/Background Extensive surgery has been shown in retrospective studies to improve survival from advanced ovarian cancer. UK uptake of extensive surgery has been variable, owing to concerns regarding the impact on quality of life (QoL) and organizational factors. We investigated QoL after surgery in parallel, multicentre, international, prospective cohorts, here reporting UK and Kolkata, India results. Methodology Patients completed EORTC-QLQ-C30 and other Patient Reported Outcome Measures pre-operation and at 6 weeks, 6, 12, 18 and 24 month postoperatively. Surgical complexity scores (SCS), intraoperative disease load and survival up to two years were collected and Kaplan Meier survival analyses and forward stepwise Cox proportional hazard models of overall survival conducted. The association of SCS with QLQ-C30 global scores at 6 weeks, 6 months and 12 months post-surgery was evaluated using general linear repeated measures models (SPSS 24). Results In 247 patients, those undergoing high (64) or intermediate (70) SCS procedures were younger, showed better performance status, higher disease load, more upper abdominal disease and greater cytoreduction rates although all SCS groups included patients with a higher burden of disease. (Table 1). Progression free and overall survival was poorer with residual disease in all SCS groups (log rank p≤0.001) (figure 1). Age Adjusted Charlson Comorbidity Index, pre-operative albumin and Peritoneal Carcinomatosis Index were independent predictors of survival (table 2). In a complete case analysis, post operation QLQ-C30 improved in all SCS groups between 6 weeks and 12 months (p Conclusion In this observational study, QoL of patients improved postoperatively, and was no worse in patients undergoing complex surgery during that period. Extensive surgery to achieve complete cytoreduction for high disease load was associated with improved survival and no deleterious impact on QoL in the post operative year. Growing bandwidth demands are driving the search for increased network capacity leading to the exploration of new wavelength ranges for future communication systems. Therefore, we consider two technologies that offer increased transmission bandwidths by virtue of their high carrier frequencies, namely optical wireless and millimeter-wave transmission. After highlighting the relevant electromagnetic (EM) spectrum region, we briefly describe the applications and properties of each approach coupled with a short history of their development. This is followed by a performance comparison in two possible 5G links: outdoor point-to-point and indoor hotspots. We find that in both cases, there are regions where optical wireless communications (OWC) are better, but others where millimeter waves are to be preferred. Specifically, the former outperforms the latter over distances up to approximately 50 meters outdoors and a 10-meter hotspot radius indoors.

Molecular communication is a paradigm that utilizes molecules to exchange information between nano-machines. When considering such systems where multiple receivers are present, prior work has assumed for simplicity that they do not interfere with each other. This paper aims to address this issue and shows to what extent an interfering receiver, $\text {R}_{\mathrm {I}}$ , will have an impact on the target receiver, $\text {R}_{\mathrm {T}}$ , with respect to Bit Error Rate (BER) and capacity. Furthermore, approximations of the Binomial distribution are applied to reduce the complexity of calculations. Results show the sensitivity in communication performance due to the relative location of the interfering receiver. Critically, placing $\text {R}_{\mathrm {I}}$ between the transmitter $\text {T}_{\mathrm {X}}$ and $\text {R}_{\mathrm {T}}$ causes a significant increase in BER or decrease in capacity.

This letter introduces Free-Space Optical (FSO) Communication links in vehicular applications using potential guiding structures around a vehicle. An optical wireless communication system simulation is described which delivers received power, bandwidth, root mean square delay spread channel impulse response for purely diffuse and diffuse-specular materials with omnidirectional and directed transmitters. In the former case, a bandwidth of 225 MHz with a power deviation of 25% results at the exit. For the latter, a 75GHz bandwidth is available at best but with a power deviation of over 99% making receiver positioning critical. The impulse response is calculated using a Modified Monte Carlo algorithm taking into account up to 15 reflections. The effect of the pipe bend angle on the path loss is also presented and the simulation is supported with experimental work.

Quorum sensing (QS) is used to describe the communication between bacterial cells, whereby a coordinated population response is controlled through the synthesis, accumulation and subsequent sensing of specific diffusible chemical signals called autoinducers, enabling a cluster of bacteria to regulate gene expression and behaviour collectively and synchronously, and assess their own population. As a promising method of molecular communication, bacterial populations can be programmed as bio-transceivers to establish information transmission using molecules. In this work, to investigate the key features for molecular communication, a bacterial QS system is introduced, which contains two clusters of bacteria, specifically Vibrio fischeri, as the transmitter node and receiver node, and the diffusive channel. The transmitted information is represented by the concentration of autoinducers with on–off keying (OOK) modulation. In addition, to achieve better reliability, transmission efficiency and channel throughput performance, different Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) protocols are taken into consideration. This configuration is investigated via simulation and the consequent results discussed. The performance of the system is evaluated in terms of transmission time, efficiency, bit error rate (BER) and channel throughput. Results show that Selective-Repeat (SR-ARQ) performs better than Go-Back-N (GBN-ARQ), while the performance of Stop-N-Wait (SW-ARQ) varies for different channel conditions, which is quite different from the performance of ARQ schemes in traditional networking areas.

Inspirations from nature have contributed fundamentally to the development of evolutionary computation. Learning from the natural ripple-spreading phenomenon, this article proposes a novel ripple-spreading algorithm (RSA) for the path optimization problem (POP). In nature, a ripple spreads at a constant speed in all directions, and the node closest to the source is the first to be reached. This very simple principle forms the foundation of the proposed RSA. In contrast to most deterministic top-down centralized path optimization methods, such as Dijkstra’s algorithm, the RSA is a bottom-up decentralized agent-based simulation model. Moreover, it is distinguished from other agent-based algorithms, such as genetic algorithms and ant colony optimization, by being a deterministic method that can always guarantee the global optimal solution with very good scalability. Here, the RSA is specifically applied to four different POPs. The comparative simulation results illustrate the advantages of the RSA in terms of effectiveness and efficiency. Thanks to the agent-based and deterministic features, the RSA opens new opportunities to attack some problems, such as calculating the exact complete Pareto front in multiobjective optimization and determining the kth shortest project time in project management, which are very difficult, if not impossible, for existing methods to resolve. The ripple-spreading optimization principle and the new distinguishing features and capacities of the RSA enrich the theoretical foundations of evolutionary computation.

The k shortest paths problem ( k -SPP) is fundamentally important to both theoretical and application researches on computational intelligence. Inspired by the natural ripple-spreading phenomenon that occurs on a water surface, this paper proposes a novel ripple-spreading algorithm (RSA). RSA differs from many existing methods which need to reconstruct route networks or to sweep the network for k times, and it can identify the k shortest paths by a single run of ripple relay race in the original route network. Besides the k -SPP in normal route networks, the RSA can also be extended, without losing optimality and effectiveness, to some time-window networks (where various waiting behaviors at nodes are introduced) and dynamical networks (where the network topology and link costs may change over time due to factors such as moving obstacles and spreading disasters). For one-to-all k -SPP, which aims to find all the k shortest paths from a given source to every other node in a network (no matter with or without time windows at nodes, and no matter whether the network topology and link costs can change over time or not), the RSA can still find out all required solutions using only a single run, while the computational complexity is exactly the same as that for the one-to-one k -SPP, i.e., O ( k × N L × N A T U ) , where N L is the number of links in the network, and N A T U is the average simulated time units for a ripple to travel through a link. The comparative experimental results illustrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed RSA.

The increasing amount of user equipment (UE) and the rapid advances in wireless body area networks bring revolutionary changes in healthcare systems. However, due to the strict requirements on size, reliability and battery lifetime of UE devices, it is difficult for them to execute latency sensitive or computation intensive tasks effectively. In this paper, we aim to enhance the UE computation capacity by utilizing small size coordinator-based mobile edge computing (C-MEC) servers. In this way, the system complexity, computation resources, and energy consumption are considerably transferred from the UE to the C-MEC, which is a practical approach since C-MEC is power charged, in contrast to the UE. First, the system architecture and the mobility model are presented. Second, several transmission mechanisms are analyzed along with the proposed mobility-aware cooperative task offloading scheme. Numerous selected performance metrics are investigated regarding the number of executed tasks, the percentage of failed tasks, average service time, and the energy consumption of each MEC. The results validate the advantage of task offloading schemes compared with the traditional relay-based technique regarding the number of executed tasks. Moreover, one can obtain that the proposed scheme archives noteworthy benefits, such as low latency and efficiently balance the energy consumption of C-MECs.

Inspired by the recent developments of the Internet of Things (IoT) relay and mobile edge computing (MEC), a hospital/home-based medical monitoring framework is proposed, in which the intensive computing tasks from the implanted sensors can be efficiently executed by on-body wearable devices or a coordinator-based MEC (C-MEC). In this paper, we first propose a wireless relay-enabled task offloading mechanism that consists of a network model and a computation model. Moreover, to manage the computation resources among all relays, a task offloading decision model and the best task offloading recipient selection function is given. The performance evaluation considers different computation schemes under the predetermined link quality condition regarding the selected vital quality of service (QoS) metrics. After demonstrating the channel characterization and network topology, the performance evaluation is implemented under different scenarios regarding the network lifetime of all relays, network residual energy status, total number of locally executed packets, path loss (PL), and service delay. The results show that data transmission without the offloading scheme outperforms the offload-based technique regarding network lifetime. Moreover, the high computation capacity scenario achieves better performance regarding PL and the total number of locally executed packets.

Butyrate can modulate the immune response and energy expenditure of animals and enhance intestinal health. The present study investigated changes in the intestinal microbiota composition and serum metabolites of young broilers in response to 3,000 ppm butyrate in the form of butyrate glycerides (BG) via pyrosequencing of bacterial 16S rRNA genes and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The dietary treatment did not affect the alpha diversity of intestinal microbiota, but altered its composition. Thirty-nine key operational taxonomic units (OTUs) in differentiating cecal microbiota community structures between BG treated and untreated chickens were also identified. Bifidobacterium was, in particular, affected by the dietary treatment significantly, showing an increase in not only the abundance (approximately 3 fold, P ≤ 0.05) but also the species diversity. The (NMR)-based analysis revealed an increase in serum concentrations of alanine, low-density and very low-density lipoproteins, and lipids (P ≤ 0.05) by BG. More interestingly, the dietary treatment also boosted (P ≤ 0.05) serum concentrations of bacterial metabolites, including choline, glycerophosphorylcholine, dimethylamine, trimethylamine, trimethylamine-N-oxide, lactate, and succinate. In conclusion, the data suggest the modulation of intestinal microbiota and serum metabolites by BG dietary treatment and potential contribution of intestinal bacteria to lipid metabolism/energy homeostasis in broilers.

As a recently reported network property, consilience degree (CSD) indicates how well a network system integrates its topology and node activities together to serve a specific systemic goal. As is well known, many natural and man-made systems are complex networks where, besides network topology, node activity states also play an important role in determining system performance. For example, a collaborative project involving friends is more likely to succeed than one involving enemies, even though the topology of network organization is the same. The concept of CSD can quantitatively distinguish the difference between the involvement of friends and the involvement of enemies. This article reports a simulation study on the adaptive behaviors of nodes based on the selfish rule and the following-others rule, and the simulation results show that based on such adaptive behaviors of nodes, a network system will automatically evolve to a high level of system consilience. The simulation study also demonstrates that a high level of system consilience resulting from adaptive behaviors will contribute to increased system resistance to external disturbances. The generality of adaptive behaviors in reality implies that CSD is an inherent attribute of real-world network systems, and therefore, the concept of CSD has significant application potential in the study of adaptive behaviors in network systems.

Future applications for nano-machines, such as drug-delivery and health monitoring, will require robust communications and nanonetworking capabilities. This is likely to be enabled via the use of molecules, as opposed to electromagnetic waves, acting as the information carrier. To enhance the reliability of the transmitted data, Euclidean geometry low density parity check (EG-LDPC) and cyclic Reed-Muller (C-RM) codes are considered for use within a molecular communication system for the first time. These codes are compared against the Hamming code to show that an $\boldsymbol{s}=4$ LDPC (integer $\boldsymbol{s}\ge 2$ ) has a superior coding gain of 7.26 dBs. Furthermore, the critical distance and energy cost for a coded system are also taken into account as two other performance metrics. It is shown that when considering the case of nano–to nano-machines communication, a Hamming code with $\boldsymbol{m}=4$ , (integer $\boldsymbol{m}\ge 2$ ) is better for a system operating between $10^{-6}$ and $10^{-3}$ bit error rate (BER) levels. Below these BERs, $\boldsymbol{s}=2$ LDPC codes are superior, exhibiting the lowest energy cost. For communication between nano–to macro-machines, and macro–to nano-machines, $\boldsymbol{s}=3$ LDPC and $\boldsymbol{s}=2$ LDPC are the best options respectively.

A nanonetwork is comprised of nanoscale sensors and communicating devices facilitating communication at the nanoscale, which is a promising technology for application in health applications such as intra-body health monitoring and drug delivery. However, the communication performance within a nanonetwork is substantially limited by the energy loss as the Electromagnetic (EM) wave propagates along the channel. Energy harvesting for nanosensor networks can provide a way to overcome the energy bottleneck without considering the lifetime of batteries. Moreover, relaying protocols for nanoscale communications have been proposed to improve the communication performance and extend the transmission distances among nanosensors within nanonetworks. The combination of energy harvesting and a relaying protocol provides an emerging solution not only to overcome the aforementioned energy issues but also enhance the system performance. Therefore, in this paper, simultaneous wireless information and power transfer nanonetworks in the Terahertz (THz) Band (0.1-10 THz) is proposed. An amplify and forward (AF) relaying nanonetwork in this band is investigated, where the relay harvests energy from the received THz signal which is then consumed to forward the information to the destination. Performance based on both time-switching and power-splitting protocols is analyzed. The numerical results show the optimal power-splitting ratio and time switching ratio that achieves the maximum throughput at the destination as well as the impact of transmission distance on system performance. It is seen that the power-splitting protocol gives greater throughput than that of the time-switching protocol.

Butyric acid is the primary energy source for colonocytes, and has shown potential as an alternative to in-feed antibiotics, due to its antimicrobial activity and positive effects on production performance traits of broiler chickens. SILOhealth 104 (SILO S.P.A., Florence, Italy) is a commercial product mainly containing mono- and di-glycerides of butyrate with a small portion of propionic, caprylic, capric, and lauric acid mono- and di-glycerides. Its effects on broiler performance and carcass composition have yet to be evaluated. Four-hundred-eighty day-old male Ross 308 birds were divided into different dietary treatment groups with equal starting weights and fed a diet containing 0, 500, 1,000, 2,000, or 3,000 ppm of SILOhealth 104 for 35 days. There were no significant differences in overall average daily gain or feed: gain ratio with the addition of SILOhealth 104 to the diets (P > 0.05). At 5 wk of age, abdominal fat weight was reduced in birds supplemented with SILOhealth 104 in a dose-responsive manner (P < 0.05), while breast muscle weight increased with supplementation, with significant increases in 2,000 ppm and 3,000 ppm birds compared to controls (P < 0.05). A significant reduction in gene expression of both forkhead box protein O4 and myostatin, 2 factors that can inhibit protein synthesis, was found in the breast muscle of all SILOhealth 104 treated birds (P < 0.05). In addition, gene expression in the adipose tissue, including acetyl-CoA carboxylase alpha and lipoprotein lipase, which are associated with lipid metabolism, was significantly decreased and increased, respectively, by the supplementation of SILOhealth 104 (P < 0.05). These data suggest that the components of SILOhealth 104 can positively affect the deposition of muscle, while reducing abdominal fat deposition in broiler chickens.

Wireless in-body sensor networks are attracting increasing attention for numerous healthcare applications and medical services. Implant devices are widely employed to measure physiological signals inside the human body in a simple, long lifetime and continuous approach. However, due to the strict technical requirements of implant devices, there exist numerous key research challenges in this area. Considering realistic transmission power requirements based on the IEEE 802.15.6 standard safety regulations, the channel characteristics of implant to deep implant and implant to body surface communication scenarios are investigated. Furthermore, multiple vital quality of service (QoS) factors of implant communication channels are studied regarding channel capacity, bit error rate (BER), link quality and data rate. The system performance evaluation indicates that the data transmission rate can be optimized up to 10 Mbps. Furthermore, the transmission distance supported by in-body to on-body communication path is 2 meters, at 1 µW while the in-body to deep tissue region communication channel achieves less than 1 meter. The results proposed in this paper give an outlook of the intra-body networking system performance and can be applied to in-body communication system implementation research.

Molecular Communications via Diffusion (MCvD) is sensitive to environmental changes such as the diffusion coefficient (mass diffusivity). The diffusivity is directly related to a number of parameters including the ambient temperature, which varies slowly over time. Whilst molecular noise models have received significant attention, channel fading has not been extensively considered. Using experimental data, we show that the ambient temperature varies approximately according to a Normal distribution. As a result, we analytically derive the fading distribution and validate it using numerical simulations. We further derive the joint distribution of the channel gain and the additive noise, and examine the impact of such interactions on the ISI distribution, which is shown to conform to a Generalised Extreme Value (GEV) distribution.

Molecular Communications is a promising area with significant potential applications. To enhance the reliability of the transmission process, self-orthogonal convolutional codes (SOCCs) are proposed and investigated with respect to both bit error rate (BER) and energy efficiency. The codes are compared to both an un-coded system and one that employs Hamming codes to show that they can provide a benefit for molecular communication systems. The influence of the channel memory is also analysed in this paper. In addition, taking into account the extra energy required to implement the coding, the critical distance is investigated as another performance metric for nano-to-nano device communication, nano-to-macro device communication and macro-to-nano device communication. Considering the transmission distance and the operating BER of the designed system, the designer can determine whether the use of coding is beneficial or which code better suits the system.

Molecular communications, where information is passed between the Transmitter (TX) and the Receiver (RX) via molecules is a promising area with vast potential applications. However, the infancy of the topic within the overall taxonomy of communications has meant that to date, several channel models are in press, each of which is applied under various constraints and/or assumptions. Amongst them is that the arrival of molecules in different time slots can be, or is, considered as independent events. In practice, this assumption is not accurate, as the molecules arriving in the previous slot reduce the possible number of molecules in the next slot and hence make them correlated. In this letter, we analyze a more realistic performance of a molecular communication assuming correlated events. The key result shown, is that the widely used model assuming independent events significantly overestimates the error rates in the channel. This result is thus critical to researchers who focus on energy use at the nano-scale, as the new analysis provides a more realistic prediction and therefore, less energy will be needed to attain a desired error rate, increasing system feasibility.\ud

This chapter focuses upon the use of coding and protocols within diffusion based molecular communication systems, laying the groundwork for future development in test bed implementations. The chapter starts with an introduction that briefly discusses coding and protocols used in traditional communication systems. Following this, details of the molecular channel are given, including the energy consumption constraints and a relevant mathematical framework. This discussion then leads onto potential encoding and decoding technologies. Next, original results on the use of Hamming codes in molecular communication systems are presented with a quantitative comparison against an uncoded molecular system. The impact of specific design parameters such as the number of molecules, energy, and transmission distance on the bit error rate (BER) is considered. Finally, a protocol, based upon the use of an acknowledgement (ACK) packet is presented as a further advancement to the field that the reader may wish to consider when designing future systems.

Background: There are limited data on surgical outcomes in gynaecological oncology. We report on predictors of complications in a multicentre prospective study. Methods: Data on surgical procedures and resulting complications were contemporaneously recorded on consented patients in 10 participating UK gynaecological cancer centres. Patients were sent follow-up letters to capture any further complications. Post-operative (Post-op) complications were graded (I–V) in increasing severity using the Clavien-Dindo system. Grade I complications were excluded from the analysis. Univariable and multivariable regression was used to identify predictors of complications using all surgery for intra-operative (Intra-op) and only those with both hospital and patient-reported data for Post-op complications. Results: Prospective data were available on 2948 major operations undertaken between April 2010 and February 2012. Median age was 62 years, with 35% obese and 20.4% ASA grade ⩾3. Consultant gynaecological oncologists performed 74.3% of operations. Intra-op complications were reported in 139 of 2948 and Grade II–V Post-op complications in 379 of 1462 surgeries. The predictors of risk were different for Intra-op and Post-op complications. The approach minimizes the resources used for multicast coding while achieving the desired throughput in the multicast scenario. Given several different new product development projects and limited resources, this paper is concerned with the optimal allocation of resources among the projects. This is clearly a multi-objective optimization problem (MOOP), because each new product development project has both a profit expectation and a loss expectation, and such expectations vary according to allocated resources. In such a case, the goal of multi-objective new product development (MONPD) is to maximize the profit expectation while minimizing the loss expectation. As is well known, Pareto optimality and the Pareto front are extremely important to resolve MOOPs. Unlike many other MOOP methods which provide only a single Pareto optimal solution or an approximation of the Pareto front, this paper reports a novel method to calculate the complete Pareto front for the MONPD. Some theoretical conditions and a ripple-spreading algorithm together play a crucial role in finding the complete Pareto front for the MONPD. Simulation results illustrate that the reported method, by calculating the complete Pareto front, can provide the best support to decision makers in the MONPD.

In commercial production, broiler breeders are severely feed restricted to maintain healthy BW. This restriction can induce stereotypic behavior, including feather pecking, which has negative welfare implications for both the victim and performer. It has been suggested that the problem may be symptomatic of chronic hunger or the frustration of feeding motivation. In this study, we determined whether feather condition, as an indirect measure of feather pecking, could be improved via dietary manipulation. Six dietary treatments were tested, each with 5 replicate pens of 9 to 12 birds. Control diets (C) were fed on a daily or skip-a-day (SAD) basis. Alternative diets included soybean hulls as a bulking ingredient and calcium propionate (CaP) as an appetite suppressant of either a feed grade (F) or purified (P) quality. Both alternative diets were fed on either a daily or SAD basis. Five or 6 birds were randomly chosen from each pen and feather scored at 10, 14, 20, 26, and 36 wk of age. Six body parts (neck, back, wings, legs, vent area, tail) were given a score from 0 to 5 (0 = no feather damage, and 5 ≥ 50% feather loss with tissue damage). Scores were summed for each bird and averaged for each pen. Data were analyzed with room and feeding frequency as main factors and diet as the subfactor with repeated measures. There was an interaction between diet and time (P < 0.01) with the feather condition of the C birds worsening more quickly in comparison with the F and P birds. There was an interaction between feeding frequency and time (P = 0.015), with SAD-fed birds scoring better than daily-fed birds at 20, 26, and 36 wk. This interaction could indicate that SAD feeding increased satiety after the birds became accustomed to the schedule. Because feather condition was better with the alternative diets, this may indicate a reduction in stereotyped feather pecking with these diets. This suggests that the alternative diets increase satiety compared with the control diets.

Parent stocks of meat birds are severely feed restricted to avoid obesity-related health and fertility problems. This restriction often leads to chronic hunger, accompanied by stereotypic behavior. Research based in the United Kingdom has shown that using diets containing fiber and appetite suppressants may relieve some of the symptoms of hunger. However, few data are available regarding North American-sourced ingredients or nondaily feeding regimens. This study investigated the effects of 2 alternative diets, in combination with 2 feeding frequencies on growth, productivity, and behavior in broiler breeders. Six dietary treatments were tested, each with 5 replicate pens of 12 or 13 birds. Control diets consisted of a commercial crumble, fed on a daily or skip-a-day (SAD) basis. Alternative diets included soybean hulls as a fiber source, and calcium propionate as an appetite suppressant of either a feed-grade or purified quality, fed on either a daily or SAD basis. Birds were weighed weekly and egg production was recorded daily. Video cameras were used to record behavior during and following the morning feeding bout every 2 wk from 11 to 28 wk. Data were analyzed with a mixed model ANOVA, with repeated measures. Diet, feeding frequency, time, or an interaction of the 3 had significant effects on all observed behavior during rearing. These differences appeared to diminish during lay, with most stereotypic behavior no longer present. Very little object pecking and aggression was observed during and immediately following feeding bouts; however, daily-fed control birds still displayed this behavior more often, especially during rearing (P = 0.015). During feeding bouts, SAD birds feather pecked (P = 0.003) and rested more (P = 0.0002) than daily-fed birds. Control birds feather pecked most often (P = 0.033) after feeding bouts. Overall, the feed-grade diet appeared most effective at reducing hunger-related behavior, and the control diet appeared the least effective. There was little conclusive evidence to show that daily feeding was more effective at reducing hunger.

Long-haul optical fiber communication employing digital signal processing (DSP)-based dispersion compensation can be distorted by the phenomenon of equalization-enhanced phase noise (EEPN), due to the reciprocities between the dispersion compensation unit and the local oscillator (LO) laser phase noise (LPN). The impact of EEPN scales increases with the increase of the fiber dispersion, laser linewidths, symbol rates, signal bandwidths, and the order of modulation formats. In this work, the phase noise cancellation (PNC) employing a radio frequency (RF) pilot tone in coherent optical transmission systems has been investigated. A 28-Gsym/s QPSK optical transmission system with a significant EEPN has been implemented, where the carrier phase recovery (CPR) was realized using the one-tap normalized least-mean-square (NLMS) estimation and the differential phase detection (DPD), respectively. It is shown that the RF pilot tone can entirely eliminate the LPN and efficiently suppress the EEPN when it is applied prior to the CPR.

Through the implementation of a simple linearly scalable 1-W infrared (IR) transmitter, which is centrally located on the ceiling of a sports utility vehicle (SUV), and for 15 passenger configurations, an analysis into the received power, power deviation, minimum bandwidth, and maximum root-mean-square (RMS) delay spread is provided for the regions of the vehicle most likely to benefit from the deployment of intravehicle optical wireless (OW) communication systems. Several specific regions, including the areas around a passenger's legs, arms, necks, and shoulders, are shown to have beneficial channel characteristics for the use of personal electronics equipment such as laptops, tablet PCs, or wireless headphones. Similarly, a region around the headrest of the front seat is shown to have potential for the deployment of in-car entertainment solutions independent of the passenger configuration. This analysis, which is the first to introduce the concept of channel variation from multiple passenger configurations, aims to show that OW is a potential candidate for future intravehicular communication systems.

Background: Most studies use hospital data to calculate postoperative complication rates (PCRs). We report on improving PCR estimates through use of patient-reporting. Methods: A prospective cohort study of major surgery performed at 10 UK gynaecological cancer centres was undertaken. Hospitals entered the data contemporaneously into an online database. Patients were sent follow-up letters to capture postoperative complications. Grade II–V (Clavien–Dindo classification) patient-reported postoperative complications were verified from hospital records. Postoperative complication rate was defined as the proportion of surgeries with a Grade II–V postoperative complication. Results: Patient replies were received for 1462 (68%) of 2152 surgeries undertaken between April 2010 and February 2012. Overall, 452 Grade II–V (402 II, 50 III–V) complications were reported in 379 of the 1462 surgeries. This included 172 surgeries with 200 hospital-reported complications and 231 with 280 patient-reported complications. All (100% concordance) 36 Grade III–V and 158 of 280 (56.4% concordance) Grade II patient-reported complications were verified on hospital case-note review. The PCR using hospital-reported data was 11.8% (172 out of 1462; 95% CI 11–14), patient-reported was 15.8% (231 out of 1462; 95% CI 14–17.8), hospital and verified patient-reported was 19.4% (283 out of 1462; 95% CI 17.4–21.4) and all data were 25.9% (379 out of 1462; 95% CI 24–28). After excluding Grade II complications, the hospital and patient verified Grade III–V PCR was 3.3% (48 out of 1462; 95% CI 2.5–4.3). Conclusion: This is the first prospective study of postoperative complications we are aware of in gynaecological oncology to include the patient-reported data. Patient-reporting is invaluable for obtaining complete information on postoperative complications. Primary care case-note review is likely to improve verification rates of patient-reported Grade II complications.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are commonly referred to as the macular carotenoids, as they are localized to ocular tissues and their loss is associated with age-related macular degeneration. High carotenoid eggs have been suggested as a good dietary source of macular carotenoids, particularly lutein. In this paper we demonstrate two key proof of concept steps: transferring the high carotenoid phenotype to elite inbred backgrounds and carotenoid enrichment of eggs through feeding high carotenoid maize (Zea mays L.) grain to laying hens (Gallus domesticus). Using two inbred backgrounds and three high carotenoid donor lines, BC₁S₂ lines were developed with selections made based solely on visual assessment of kernel color. The 20-wk laying hen feeding trial consisted of four complete diets that varied for the maize component (i.e., a high-zeaxanthin maize line, a high-lutein maize line, and a conventional yellow maize line with and without a commercial lutein [Oro-glo] supplement) with eggs samples collected every 4 wk. High-carotenoid maize diet treatments yielded carotenoid concentrations in egg yolks that were approximately fourfold higher than those achieved with the conventional maize feed control and were found to be equally available to the laying hen as a lutein feed additive used as a positive control. While phenotyping by high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) cannot be completely eliminated, visual selection increases the proportion of high-carotenoid phenotypes and it appears that transferring the high carotenoid phenotype into elite inbred lines is relatively straightforward.

In this paper, we aim to minimize in-body sensor node energy consumption and to prolong the network lifetime by utilizing a relay strategy based on our proposed flexible quality of service (QoS) radio frequency communication module and advanced In-to-out body path loss (PL) model. A selection algorithm is derived and investigated in which the relay nodes with lower energy consumption and minimum distance to the coordinator will be chosen in each round. In this way, time division multiple access (TDMA) can be investigated to schedule data transmission from implants to the corresponding relays, and thus minimize the overall length of communication links. Moreover, a linear programming network lifetime model is proposed along with various subjective functions. Followed by constraints, simulations are conducted on a proposed topology network assuming two commercial transceivers. Results show that the existing two-relay based protocol achieves higher transmission data rates due to the availability of redundant communication pathways. However, our proposed incremental relay-based cooperative routing protocol outperforms the existing two-relay based scheme regarding total network lifetime, overall throughput, average power consumption and propagation delay.

In this paper, an analytical and accurate in-to-out (I2O) human body path loss (PL) model at 2.45 GHz is derived based on a 3D heterogeneous human body model under safety constraints. The bit error rate (BER) performance for this channel using multiple efficient modulation schemes is investigated and the link budget is analyzed based on a predetermined satisfactory BER of 10−3. In addition, an incremental relay-based cooperative quality of service-aware (QoS-aware) routing protocol for the proposed I2O WBAN is presented and compared with an existing scheme. Linear programming QoS metric expressions are derived and employed to maximize the network lifetime, throughput, minimizing delay. Results show that binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) outperforms other modulation techniques for the proposed I2O WBAN systems, enabling the support of a 30 Mbps data transmission rate up to 1.6 m and affording more reliable communication links when the transmitter power is increased. Moreover, the proposed incremental cooperative routing protocol outperforms the existing two-relay technique in terms of energy efficiency. Open issues and on-going research within the I2O WBAN area are presented and discussed as an inspiration towards developments in health IoT applications.

Wireless body area sensor networks (WBASNs) are becoming an increasingly significant breakthrough technology for smart healthcare systems, enabling improved clinical decision-making in daily medical care. Recently, radio frequency ultra-wideband technology has developed substantially for physiological signal monitoring due to its advantages such as low-power consumption, high transmission data rate, and miniature antenna size. Applications of future ubiquitous healthcare systems offer the prospect of collecting human vital signs, early detection of abnormal medical conditions, real-time healthcare data transmission and remote telemedicine support. However, due to the technical constraints of sensor batteries, the supply of power is a major bottleneck for healthcare system design. Moreover, medium access control (MAC) needs to support reliable transmission links that allow sensors to transmit data safely and stably. In this Letter, the authors provide a flexible quality of service model for ad hoc networks that can support fast data transmission, adaptive schedule MAC control, and energy efficient ubiquitous WBASN networks. Results show that the proposed multi-hop communication ad hoc network model can balance information packet collisions and power consumption. Additionally, wireless communications link in WBASNs can effectively overcome multi-user interference and offer high transmission data rates for healthcare systems.
