Foundation: patient safety culture is the product of values, beliefs, attitudes, perceptions, norms, procedures, competencies and patterns of individual and group behavior, which determines the commitment of a health organization to the management of patient safety.Objective: to carry out cultural adaptation of the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture instrument to the Cuban context. Methods: descriptive, cross-sectional study, carried out from January to March 2023, with workers from the Frank País International Orthopedic Scientific Complex, which consisted of four phases: first phase: instrument qualitative analysis, second phase: scale selection, third phase: pilot test with 17 workers, fourth phase: second pilot test with 30 workers.Results: in the qualitative analysis with experts, words are eliminated, added and changed from the instrument; in the first test, 73.6% answered them on scales one and two of incomprehensible and poorly understood and 2.3% did not answer some of dimensions. In the second pilot, 78.2% answered on the scales of understandable and completely understandable in the cultural adaptation of the instrument. The final questionnaire has 42 items grouped into 12 dimensions and these are in three sections, just like the original.Conclusions: the questionnaire has a comprehensible and relevant structure to measure the perception of the patient safety culture at the Frank País International Orthopedic Scientific Complex.

Living Donor Liver Transplantation (LDLT) is a promising approach to treating end-stage liver diseases, however, some post-operatory complications such as pneumonia, bacteremia, urinary tract infections, and hepatic dysfunction have been reported. In murine models using partial hepatectomy (PHx), a model that emulates LDLT, it has been determined that the synthesis of hepatic cell proliferation factors that are associated with noradrenaline synthesis are produced in locus coeruleus (LC). In addition, studies have shown that PHx decreases GABA and 5-HT2A receptors, promotes loss of dendritic spines, and favors microgliosis in rat hippocampus. The GABA and serotonin-altered circuits suggest that catecholaminergic neurons such as dopamine and noradrenaline neurons, which are highly susceptible to cellular stress, can also be damaged. To understand post-transplant affections and to perform well-controlled studies it is necessary to know the potential causes that explain as a liver surgical procedure can produce brain damage. In this paper, we review several cellular processes that could induce gliosis in LC after rat PHx.

Multidisciplinary strategies have transformed the management of advanced ovarian cancer. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of paclitaxel in hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) following surgical cytoreduction for ovarian peritoneal metastases in a randomized phase III trial conducted between August 2012 and December 2019. Seventy-six patients were randomized to either the HIPEC or no HIPEC group. Although median values for the primary endpoints (recurrence-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS)) revealed superior outcomes for the HIPEC (RFS: 23 months, OS: 48 months) over the control group (RFS: 19 months, OS: 46 months), these differences were not statistically significant (p = 0.22 and p = 0.579). Notably, the HIPEC group demonstrated significantly higher 5-year OS and 3-year RFS rates (47.2% and 47.5%) compared to patients without HIPEC (34.5% and 21.3%). Stratification according to Peritoneal Surface Disease Severity Score (PSDSS) showed improved OS and RFS for patients with lower PSDSS (I–II) in the HIPEC-treated group (p = 0.033 and p = 0.042, respectively). The Clavien–Dindo classification of adverse event grades revealed no significant differences between HIPEC and controls (p = 0.482). While overall results were not statistically significant, our long-term follow-up emphasized the potential benefit of HIPEC-associated cytoreduction with paclitaxel, particularly in selected ovarian cancer patients with lower PSDSS indices.

Introduction: Bronchiolitis poses a considerable challenge during its seasonal peak, overwhelming the material and human resources available to care for affected patients. As a result, interhospital transfers increase exponentially. We did not find any studies analysing the characteristics of patients with bronchiolitis managed in out-of-hospital urgent care (OHUC) services and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the epidemiology of bronchiolitis. Objective: To establish the characteristics of paediatric and neonatal patients with acute bronchiolitis (AB) managed in OHUC services in the Community of Madrid and to analyse the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the epidemiology of bronchiolitis. Methods: Retrospective cross-sectional observational and descriptive study carried out in OHUC settings in the Community of Madrid between 2016 and 2023. We included patients with a diagnosis of acute bronchiolitis based on the ICD-10 codes documented in the electronic records of urgent care visits and interhospital transports. We collected data on sociodemographic, clinical and treatment (ventilation and medication) variables. Results: The sample included 630 patients with AB: 343 managed in non-neonatal OHUC (non-neo) services and 287 by the mobile neonatal intensive care unit transport team (NTT). The median age was 3.7 months (IQR, 2.8–4.7) in patients in the non-neo OHUC group and 19 days (IQR, 14.2−23.7) in the NTT group. There was a statistically significant increase in age in the 2020/2021 season in the non-neo OHUC group. The severity score was significantly higher in the NTT group. There was an unusual peak in bronchiolitis cases in June 2021, coinciding with the end of the 4th wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. The incidence of bronchiolitis was highest after the 6th wave of the pandemic (13.5 cases per 10 000 children aged < 2 years). Conclusions: The median age of paediatric patients with AB managed in OHUC services increased following the end of the lockdown imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which was probably associated with the lack of exposure to the viruses that cause it. This also may explain why the incidence of bronchiolitis was highest in the season following the 6th wave of the pandemic. The severity score was higher in neonatal patients. Epidemiological surveillance, the introduction of protocols and the implementation of an ongoing training programme for non-specialized health care staff involved in the transport of these patients could improve their management. Resumen: Introducción: La bronquiolitis se convierte en todo un reto durante su pico estacional, desbordando los recursos materiales y humanos para poder atender los pacientes afectados. A consecuencia de ello, se multiplican exponencialmente los traslados interhospitalarios. No se han encontrado estudios que hayan analizado las características de los pacientes con bronquiolitis aguda (BA) en los Servicios de Urgencias Extrahospitalarios (SUEH) y la influencia de la pandemia en su epidemiología. Objetivo: Conocer las características de los pacientes pediátricos y neonatales con bronquiolitis en los SUEH de la Comunidad de Madrid y analizar la influencia de la pandemia COVID-19 en su epidemiología. Material y métodos: Estudio observacional descriptivo, transversal y retrospectivo realizado en los SUEH de la Comunidad de Madrid entre 2016–2023. Se incluyeron pacientes con diagnóstico de BA según CIE-10 en la Historias Clínicas de las asistencias y traslados interhospitalarios. Se registraron variables sociodemográficas, clínicas y de tratamiento (ventilatorio y farmacológico). Resultados: Se incluyeron 630 pacientes con BA: 343 atendidos por los SUEH no especializados en neonatología (no-neo) y 287 por el equipo de transporte neonatal (TN). La mediana de edad fue de 3,7 meses [2,8–4,7] en SUEH no-neo y de 19 días [14,2–23,7] en TN. Hubo un aumento de la edad estadísticamente significativa en la temporada 2020/2021 en el grupo de SUEH no-neo. La escala de gravedad fue estadísticamente mayor en el grupo de TN. Hubo un pico inusual de casos de bronquiolitis en junio de 2021 coincidiendo con el fin de la 4ª ola de COVID-19. La incidencia de bronquiolitis, tras la 6ª ola de pandemia, fue la mayor de todas las temporadas (13,5 casos por cada 10.000 niños ≤ 2 años). Conclusiones: La mediana de edad en los pacientes pediátricos con bronquiolitis aguda en los SUEH aumentó tras finalizar el confinamiento de la pandemia COVID-19, en probable relación con la ausencia de exposición a los virus causantes de la misma. Esto podría explicar también que la incidencia de bronquiolitis tras la 6ª ola de pandemia fue la mayor de todas las temporadas. La escala de gravedad fue mayor en los pacientes neonatales. La vigilancia epidemiológica, implantación de protocolos e implementación de un programa de formación continuada a los profesionales no especializados encargados de los traslados de este tipo de pacientes podría mejorar su manejo.

Introduction: At present, neurodevelopmental abnormalities are the most frequent type of complication in school-aged children with congenital heart disease (CHD). We analysed the incidence of acute neurologic events (ANEs) in patients with operated CHD and the usefulness of neuromarkers for the prediction of neurodevelopment outcomes. Methods: Prospective observational study in infants with a prenatal diagnosis of CHD who underwent cardiac surgery in the first year of life. We assessed the following variables: (1) serum biomarkers of brain injury (S100B, neuron-specific enolase) in cord blood and preoperative blood samples; (2) clinical and laboratory data from the immediate postnatal and perioperative periods; (3) treatments and complications; (4) neurodevelopment (Bayley-III scale) at age 2 years. Results: the study included 84 infants with a prenatal diagnosis of CHD who underwent cardiac surgery in the first year of life. Seventeen had univentricular heart, 20 left ventricular outflow obstruction and 10 genetic syndromes. The postoperative mortality was 5.9% (5/84) and 10.7% (9/84) patients experienced ANEs. The mean overall Bayley-III scores were within the normal range, but 31% of patients had abnormal scores in the cognitive, motor or language domains. Patients with genetic syndromes, ANEs and univentricular heart had poorer neurodevelopmental outcomes. Elevation of S100B in the immediate postoperative period was associated with poorer scores. Conclusions: children with a history of cardiac surgery for CHD in the first year of life are at risk of adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. Patients with genetic syndromes, ANEs or univentricular heart had poorer outcomes. Postoperative ANEs may contribute to poorer outcomes. Elevation of S100B levels in the postoperative period was associated with poorer neurodevelopmental outcomes at 2 years. Studies with larger samples and longer follow-ups are needed to define the role of these biomarkers of brain injury in the prediction of neurodevelopmental outcomes in patients who undergo surgery for management of CHD. Resumen: Introducción: En la actualidad, las alteraciones del neurodesarrollo son la complicación más frecuente en pacientes con cardiopatía congénita (CC) en edad escolar. Analizamos la incidencia de eventos neurológicos agudos (ENA) en pacientes con CC sometidos a cirugía cardiaca y la utilidad de los neuromarcadores para predecir el neurodesarrollo. Métodos: Estudio prospectivo observacional en recién nacidos (RN) con CC diagnosticada prenatalmente sometidos a cirugía el primer año de vida. Se evaluaron: 1) biomarcadores sanguíneos de lesión cerebral (S100B, enolasa neuronal específica) en sangre de cordón y periquirúrgicos; 2) datos clínicos y analíticos perinatales y periquirúrgicos; 3) tratamientos y complicaciones; 4) neurodesarrollo (Escala Bayley III) a los dos años. Resultados: Se incluyeron 84 RN con CC de diagnóstico fetal, confirmada postnatalmente, sometidos a cirugía cardiaca en el primer año de vida. 17 pacientes tenían corazón univentricular, 20 pacientes obstrucción izquierda y 10 síndromes genéticos. Fallecieron en el periodo postquirúrgico 5 pacientes (5,9%) y 9 pacientes presentaron ENA (10,7%). Las puntuaciones medias en el test de Bayley III fueron normales pero el 31% tuvieron alteración cognitiva, motora o en el lenguaje. Los pacientes con síndromes genéticos, ENA y CC univentriculares tuvieron peor neurodesarrollo. La elevación de S100B en el postoperatorio inmediato se correlacionó con peores puntuaciones. Conclusiones: Los pacientes con CC sometidos a cirugía tienen mayor riesgo de sufrir alteraciones del neurodesarrollo. Los pacientes con síndromes genéticos o corazones univentriculares presentan peores resultados. Presentar ENA postquirúrgico puede contribuir a peores resultados. Niveles de s100B elevados en el postoperatorio se correlacionan con peores resultados en los tests de neurodesarrollo a los dos años. Series con más pacientes y con seguimiento a largo plazo nos ayudarán a definir el papel de estos biomarcadores de lesión cerebral en la predicción del neurodesarrollo en pacientes sometidos a cirugía de CC.

A successful reintroduction of Phengaris teleius performed in the Netherlands by translocating 86 individuals from a Polish metapopulation in 1990 represents a unique opportunity to study changes in butterflies from a source and reintroduced metapopulation after such a common conservation practice. Using multilevel comparisons, we tested morphological and genetic changes that occurred after 30 generations since the reintroduction. We also assessed the climatic and connectivity changes that occurred over time in both metapopulation networks. Unexpectedly, we found more significant morphological changes in the current individuals from the source metapopulation, where both sexes had bigger hindwings with different shapes in comparison to the individuals from the original metapopulation in the year of the reintroduction and the ones from the current reintroduced metapopulation. The butterflies from the Dutch metapopulation also had smaller thorax width compared to the ones from the current source metapopulation. The observed morphological changes can be shaped by various factors like changes in climatic conditions and habitat connectivity. Additionally, the genetic analysis revealed a differentiation between the source and reintroduced metapopulation. We found a loss of half of the allelic richness and a bottleneck effect in the reintroduced metapopulation compared to the current Polish one. Our results show that Phengaris butterflies have the potential to adapt to new habitats and respond to climatic changes despite their complex life cycle. A proper long-term habitat management in reintroduced butterfly metapopulations and habitat restoration are key factors influencing the success of reintroduction.

The Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach has become one of the most frequent teaching options used as a pivotal element of bilingual programs. Over the last two decades, a lot has been written about its characteristics, its potential, and the methodological approaches that should be used to encourage such programs. Since the main objective of CLIL is to improve the use of the foreign language as a vehicle for communication by students when accessing and manipulating content matter, it seems evident that methodological strategies should be promoted to provide the opportunity to maximize the use of the language within the classroom. In this respect, project-based learning (PBL) is depicted, in principle, as an ideal proposal for CLIL, since its implementation will entail an increase in language management. Especially concerning the content, this will result in an improvement in students' ability to perform more comfortably in school and, presumably, more effectively. Nevertheless, there might not be such a straightforward cause-effect relationship and, therefore, it is necessary to dig deeper into the real impact of using PBL. This study is aimed at analyzing its influence from the students' point of view, to drill down on their feelings and behavior towards PBL and how they tackle and solve the arising challenges. Results have shown interesting information about their views on the benefits of working by projects but also some concerns regarding the use of this teaching and learning model.

Purpose: The present study analyzes differences in self-perceived employability (SPE) among Spanish university and vocational education and training (VET) students. It also aims to determine whether factors such as gender, work experience and perceptions of the precariousness of the job market have a differential effect on SPE in accordance with the training pathway chosen by emerging adults. Design/methodology/approach: A total of 1,715 university students (64.7% women) and 488 VET students (37.1% women) aged between 18 and 29 years completed a self-administered questionnaire that included measures of perceived employability and precarious employment. Findings: The results indicate higher SPE among VET students than among their university counterparts. Female university students scored lower also than their male colleagues, an effect that was not observed among VET students. Prior work experience improved internal SPE among students on both training pathways. However, among university students, work experience and precarious employment reduced external SPE, an affect that was not observed among VET students. Practical implications: The analysis of differences in SPE between university and VET students highlights the importance of an educational curriculum that includes practical competences for enhancing employability. The results also reflect the negative consequences of precarious employment on feelings of employability during this life stage, particularly among those studying at university. Originality/value: This is one of the first studies to analyze the perceived employability of emerging adults on two different training pathways in Spain.

Aunque la propagación de bulos y desinformaciones ha sido una constante histórica, la tecnología actual ha potenciado su alcance y efectos. Las investigaciones existentes se han centrado en el concepto de desinformación, el análisis de los factores tecnológicos y sociales que facilitan su proliferación y el estudio de sus efectos tanto a nivel social como individual. Este estudio propone futuras direcciones de investigación que aborden los desafíos emergentes en el campo de la desinformación, enfocándose en su continua adaptación y en las estrategias más efectivas para su mitigación en la era digital. Mediante el empleo de un método Delphi (N=16), la investigación revela cuatro dimensiones generales: entorno digital y redes sociales, que aborda la complejidad de la desinformación en plataformas y redes; calidad de la información y veracidad, centrado en la importancia de la integridad informativa y prácticas periodísticas éticas; competencia y atención de la audiencia, que examina el desafío de captar y mantener la atención del público en un entorno mediático saturado; polarización y discursos de odio, que resalta la necesidad de combatir las consecuencias sociales negativas de la desinformación.

Este artículo presenta un breve análisis sobre la proyección de una feminidad corporal normativa vinculada a actividad física en el caso concreto de un anuncio que aparece en una revista deportiva. El anuncio es de la marca Fjäll Räven y aparece dentro de uno de los números de la revista es Desnivel, especializada en montañismo y escalada. A pesar de lo sutil de la presentación, tanto de las imágenes como del texto vinculado al anuncio, se deja entrever el sexismo de una mirada masculina dominante que refuerza los marcos de sentido hegemónicos de género, contraponiendo los modelos corporales y las formas de realizar deporte y actividad física para hombres (ej., actividad, aventura, riesgo) y para mujeres (ej. pasividad, estética, sociabilidad).

Objective: to identify teaching-learning strategies for professional nursing care: consequences of COVID-19. Methods: a qualitative study with a phenomenological theoretical approach. The population was made up of 11 teachers and 10 students on the Bachelor of Nursing course at a public university, who were interviewed in-depth and audio-recorded for later transcription. Open categorization was used; content analysis enabled the identification of categories: Teaching-learning strategies, Acquired learning, and professional skills. Results: the most relevant teaching and learning strategies are active methodologies and collaborative work. The adaptability of students and teachers is the most important thing to highlight, enhancing the development of skills through the link between theory and practice. Conclusion: it is clear that the actors agree that the strategies have better application and results in learning care through the face-to-face education modality, facilitating the approach of real scenarios to generate meaningful learning. Contributions to practice: the complete panorama of the educational transition that teachers and students have gone through during the pandemic has supported the identification of teaching-learning strategies that promote meaningful learning.

En un contexto de crisis que incluye el advenimiento de posiciones autoritarias y el cuestionamiento a las instituciones educativas, la reflexión filosófica, política y pedagógica en favor de la reconstrucción de un ethos democrático resulta indispensable. El propósito del artículo es abordar algunos aspectos de esta tarea desde el marco teórico del filósofo pragmatista John Dewey. Para ello, en primer lugar introduciremos su posición haciendo pie en nociones centrales como las de experiencia, investigación y democracia. En segundo lugar, mostraremos las implicancias que trae dicha posición para pensar una educación en términos pragmatistas. Por último, y a modo de conclusión, sostendremos que el enfoque deweyano ofrece aportes de relevancia frente a la pregunta crucial acerca de cómo llevar adelante una educación en y para una sociedad democrática.

Este libro contiene la transcripción original de un texto de 1834 sobre la memoria del proceso judicial desarrollado a partir de los incidentes ocurridos durante la celebración de un evento de lucha en Tenerife. El contenido de la memoria da información sobre las formas de organización del evento, el nivel y modo de estandarización de la lucha, la terminología utilizada o la indumentaria utilizada. El texto viene precedido por una introducción socio-histórica en la que vemos cómo el desarrollo de la lucha se ve sujeto a procesos de deportivización vinculados a la generación de una identidad comunitaria Canaria propia y distintiva respecto a la España peninsular.

IntroductionCarbapenemase-Producing Escherichia coli (CP-Eco) isolates, though less prevalent than other CP-Enterobacterales, have the capacity to rapidly disseminate antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and cause serious difficult-to-treat infections. The aim of this study is phenotypically and genotypically characterizing CP-Eco isolates collected from Spain to better understand their resistance mechanisms and population structure.MethodsNinety representative isolates received from 2015 to 2020 from 25 provinces and 59 hospitals Spanish hospitals were included. Antibiotic susceptibility was determined according to EUCAST guidelines and whole-genome sequencing was performed. Antibiotic resistance and virulence-associated genes, phylogeny and population structure, and carbapenemase genes-carrying plasmids were analyzed.Results and discussionThe 90 CP-Eco isolates were highly polyclonal, where the most prevalent was ST131, detected in 14 (15.6%) of the isolates. The carbapenemase genes detected were blaOXA-48 (45.6%), blaVIM-1 (23.3%), blaNDM-1 (7.8%), blaKPC-3 (6.7%), and blaNDM-5 (6.7%). Forty (44.4%) were resistant to 6 or more antibiotic groups and the most active antibiotics were colistin (98.9%), plazomicin (92.2%) and cefiderocol (92.2%). Four of the seven cefiderocol-resistant isolates belonged to ST167 and six harbored blaNDM. Five of the plazomicin-resistant isolates harbored rmt. IncL plasmids were the most frequent (45.7%) and eight of these harbored blaVIM-1. blaOXA-48 was found in IncF plasmids in eight isolates. Metallo-β-lactamases were more frequent in isolates with resistance to six or more antibiotic groups, with their genes often present on the same plasmid/integron. ST131 isolates were associated with sat and pap virulence genes. This study highlights the genetic versatility of CP-Eco and its potential to disseminate ARGs and cause community and nosocomial infections.

The purpose of this study was to determine the experience, prevalence, and risk indicators (socioeconomic, sociodemographic, and dental variables) of coronal and root caries in older persons residing in nursing homes in Mexico.Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in 227 dentate participants with natural teeth. Convenience sample, where all dentate residents were invited to participate. The dependent variables were coronal caries and root caries, which were determined through an oral clinical examination. The independent variables were sociodemographic factors, location, type of center, surfaces free of dental biofilm and calculus, surfaces with recession, retainers in contact with surfaces with recession, xerostomia, smoking, and the previous use of dental services. The binary logistic regression model was used in the analysis.Results: The mean age of the participants in this study was 77.7± 8.8 years, and 69.2% were women. Moreover, 71.8% live in long-term care facilities, and 48.0% live in Mexico City. The prevalence of coronal and root caries was found to be 67.8% and 50.7%, respectively. Being male and living in Mexico City were risk indicators for coronal caries, and with a 1% increase in surfaces with no biofilm, the risk decreased by 2%. Being widowed, having government or no social security, denture retainers, and coronal caries were risk indicators for root caries, while the utilization of dental services indicated lower risk.Conclusion: Several variables that differ in nature were found to be risk indicators for coronal and root caries. Coronal caries increases the risk of root caries. Prevention should be aimed at identifying persons at higher risk, and dental care should be improved for persons living in long-term care institutions.Keywords: root caries, dental caries, institutionalization, adult, cross-sectional study, prevalence, risk indicators

El envejecimiento poblacional no es un fenómeno exclusivo de la sociedad moderna; ha estado presente en todas las etapas del desarrollo social y ha sido siempre de interés para la filosofía, el arte y la medicina. Se presenta una revisión bibliográfica, con el objetivo de valorar la aplicación del modelo de Nola J. Pender en la promoción de salud y su aplicabilidad desde su visión teórica en la práctica de enfermería comunitaria en el envejecimiento poblacional. Se analizan los aspectos teóricos expresados por ella, sus principales supuestos y su relación con el envejecimiento poblacional, además de exponer sus aportes teóricos, la importancia de su aplicación para la familia, la comunidad y su contribución al desarrollo de la enfermería no solo de Cuba sino en el mundo; si partimos de que Cuba está entre los países más envejecidos de Latinoamérica. La promoción de la salud motivada por el deseo de aumentar el bienestar y actualizar el potencial humano, es considerada en la actualidad una poderosa herramienta que permite promover actitudes, motivaciones y acciones a partir del concepto de autoeficacia, del compromiso de los individuos con el cambio de conductas para fomentar salud, no solo sobre el envejecimiento en sí, sino desde el envejecimiento. Este artículo presenta nuevos aportes gráficos e historiográficos en torno a la traza fundacional de Mancha Real de 1570 conservado en el archivo de la Real Chancillería de Granada, único testigo gráfico del proyecto de nuevas poblaciones promovido por la corona castellana en la Sierra Sur de Jaén entre 1508 y 1539. La etapa cumbre del proceso colonizador fue coordinada por el juez madrileño Juan de Rivadeneyra entre abril y agosto de 1539, operando junto a una comitiva de notarios, alarifes y medidores, y aplicando prácticas urbanas paralelas a las desarrolladas en América Latina desde 1501. Les apoyaba el todavía joven escultor Juan de Reolid como tracista oficial del proceso. El plano fundacional de 1570 es una copia notarial directa del trabajo de Reolid que, si bien no conserva su gesto ni su caligrafía, sí muestra los criterios gráficos, cartográficos y registrales propios del urbanismo imperial español.

Sandy beaches are ever-changing environments, as they experience constant reshaping due to the external forces of tides, waves, and winds. The shoreline position, which marks the boundary between water and sand, holds great significance in the fields of coastal geomorphology, coastal engineering, and coastal management. It is crucial to understand how beaches evolve over time, but high-resolution shoreline datasets are scarce, and establishing monitoring systems can be costly. To address this, we present a new dataset of the shorelines of five Spanish sandy beaches located in contrasting environments that is derived from the CoastSnap citizen-science shoreline monitoring programme. The use of citizen science within environmental projects is increasing, as it allows both community awareness and the collection of large amounts of data that are otherwise difficult to obtain. This dataset includes a total of 1721 individual shorelines composed of 3 m spaced points alongshore, accompanied by additional attributes, such as elevation value and acquisition date, allowing for easy comparisons. Our dataset offers a unique perspective on how citizen science can provide reliable datasets that are useful for management and geomorphological studies. Background: Body composition (BC) techniques, including bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIVA), nutritional ultrasound® (NU), and computed tomography (CT), can detect nutritional diagnoses such as sarcopenia (Sc). Sc in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is associated with greater severity and lower survival. Our aim was to explore the correlation of BIVA, NU and functional parameters with BC at T12 level CT scans in patients with IPF but also its relationship with degree of Sc, malnutrition and mortality. Methods: This bicentric cross-sectional study included 60 IPF patients (85.2% male, 70.9 ± 7.8 years). Morphofunctional assessment (MFA) techniques included BIVA, NU, CT at T12 level (T12-CT), handgrip strength, and timed up and go. CT data were obtained using FocusedON®. Statistical analysis was conducted using JAMOVI version 2.3.22 to determine the cutoff points for Sc in T12-CT and to analyze correlations with other MFA techniques. Results: the cutoff for muscle area in T12-CT was ≤77.44 cm2 (area under the curve (AUC) = 0.734, sensitivity = 41.7%, specificity = 100%). The skeletal muscle index (SMI_T12CT) cutoff was ≤24.5 cm2/m2 (AUC = 0.689, sensitivity = 66.7%, specificity = 66.7%). Low SMI_T12CT exhibited significantly reduced median survival and higher risk of mortality compared to those with normal muscle mass (SMI cut off ≥ 28.8 cm/m2). SMI_T12CT was highly correlated with body cell mass from BIVA (r = 0.681) and rectus femoris cross-sectional area (RF-CSA) from NU (r = 0.599). Cronbach’s α for muscle parameters across different MFA techniques and CT was 0.735, confirming their validity for evaluating muscle composition. In the context of private universities, improving researchers’ performance is critical for universities to remain competitive. This article utilizes system dynamics to analyze how key variables related to leadership, such as satisfaction, motivation, efficiency, research capabilities, and morale, interact and influence each other. We use causal loop diagrams to illustrate these relationships based on the priority assessments of 86 private university researchers, evaluated using the Analytic Hierarchical Process (AHP). Our findings emphasize the critical importance of a balanced approach to strategy and policy design, suggesting that improving one factor may inadvertently affect others, thereby influencing the outcomes for leadership in educational settings. This study provides valuable insights for decision-makers and leaders who aim to foster and enhance their academic staff’s sustainable performance.

The Pyrenean grey partridge (Perdix perdix hispaniensis) is an endangered and insufficiently studied galliform occurring in upland habitats dominated by shrublands in Spain, France, and Andorra. Aiming to develop tailored management to favour the species, we studied the effect of habitat management on a partridge population located in Zamora province within the Galician–Duero mountains as part of a long-term project promoted by the regional government (Junta Castilla y León). Management was based on carrying out conservation and recovery of optimal habitats through clearing shrublands (either plots or linear) distributed in a “core area” of 45 km2, conducting tracks with beaters and pointing dogs during autumn in three areas, and comparing the partridge abundance before (2000–2006) and after (2007–2023) management. Habitat management increased partridge abundance values in two areas (1.46 and 1.68 times higher) and had no effect on the remaining one. The pattern of grey partridge abundance during the study was irregular and not influenced by the weather, and the highest abundance values were reached 8–10 years after habitat measures were implemented for the first time. Habitat management allowed high autumn abundance to be reached (mean kilometre abundance values of 2.94 and 3.74 birds/km in two areas), while the mean number of birds per family group was not affected by management (nine birds/group). When aiming to recover Pyrenean grey partridge populations, habitat management should be based on the conservation and management of shrublands to provide mixed habitats in the medium and long term, ensuring regular partridge monitoring.

Buttonweed (Cotula coronopifolia) is native to South Africa but invasive in wetlands in Europe, North America, and Australasia, where it excludes native plants. Despite being dry-fruited, field studies suggest migratory waterbirds can disperse its seeds via gut passage (endozoochory), aiding its expansion. To explore the potential for endozoochory in different regions and habitats, we collected seeds from six populations in Spain, Sweden, and the UK. Germination was tested under different salinity levels (0, 5, 10, 15 g/L) and simulated gut passage treatments: scarification, acidification, or both. No germination occurred at 15 g/L. Higher salinity reduced and delayed germination, but full gut passage treatment (i.e., both scarification and acidification) increased germinability and accelerated germination. Scarification or acid treatment alone resulted in intermediate germination patterns. There were significant salinity × population and gut passage × population interactions on germinability. The acceleration effect of gut passage on germination was stronger at 5–10 g/L than at 0 g/L. This study highlights how migratory birds can facilitate the spread of alien plants introduced by humans. Endozoochory by waterbirds is an understudied mechanism for the long-distance dispersal of dry-fruited alien plants. Further research on C. coronopifolia, including population genetics, is necessary to understand dispersal mechanisms and facilitate management strategies.

The competition to attract audiences has led to an increase in sensational or misleading headlines and content, with the aim of garnering user clicks in the news media. This dynamic alters the journalistic manner in which news is presented, and it does so by reducing informative quality and eroding the trust of the audience. This study examines the proliferation of clickbait strategies on the front pages of reputable international ‘serious’ press and how it manifests in readers’ consumption and sharing habits. We carried out a comparative content analysis of digital news articles from four international media sources (N = 1680): The Guardian (UK), The New York Times (USA), El País (Spain) and Público (Portugal). Our results confirm the existence of clickbait (N = 516) on the front pages, the most read content and the articles most shared on social media. Most clickbait titles resort to headline strategies of containing incomplete information that affect both hard and soft news topics. This particular finding highlights the inclusion of clickbait in the agenda of ‘serious’ journalism, despite the negative implications on information quality and trust. Associated with irrelevant content, this ‘hook’ captures the attention of the online audience more than the social media audience.

In the school context, the teacher–student interaction style plays a pivotal role in ensuring optimal adolescent functioning. Over recent years, the significance of transformational teacher leadership in fostering student engagement and positive development has been underscored. This study aimed to examine the correlations between transformational leadership and adolescent self-esteem, motor self-efficacy, enjoyment in physical education classes, and intention for future physical activity. This research used an associative and predictive strategy. A total of 429 adolescents from Málaga, aged between 14 and 16 years (M = 14.97; SD = 0.85), participated in this research, which employed an associative, comparative, and predictive approach. The Transformational Teaching Questionnaire (TTQ), Motor Self-Efficacy Scale (MSES), Intrinsic Satisfaction in Sport Instrument (SSI-EF), and Intention of Being Physically Active Scale (MIFA) were utilized for variable assessment. Correlation, Multiple Regression, and cluster analyses revealed statistically significant correlations between transformational leadership and self-esteem, motor self-efficacy, enjoyment, and future activity intention. Specifically, it was revealed that motivational inspiration predicts self-esteem, motor self-efficacy, enjoyment, and intention for physical activity, whereas intellectual stimulation predicts motor self-efficacy, enjoyment, and intention for physical activity. Notably, the transformational leadership factors of intellectual stimulation and motivational inspiration were observed to predict scores across other variables, particularly enjoyment in physical education classes, both overall and by gender. These findings suggest that transformational leadership in physical education classes can significantly enhance student experiences, thereby promoting adherence to physical activity and healthy lifestyles among adolescents.

This study focused on isolating, identifying, and evaluating the trypanocidal potential against the hemoflagellate protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi of compounds from Parthenium incanum (Mariola), a plant used in traditional Mexican medicine to treat stomach and liver disorders. P. incanum has a wide distribution in Mexico. This study found that methanolic extracts of P. incanum, obtained by static maceration and successive reflux, had promising results. The fractions were compared using thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and those that showed similarities were mixed. A bioguided assay was performed with Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, using agar diffusion and bioautography techniques to determine the preliminary biological activity. The fractions with antimicrobial activity were purified using a preparative thin-layer chromatography (PTLC) plate, obtaining the bioactive bandages that were subjected to a trypanocidal evaluation against the Ninoa strain of T. cruzi in its epimastigote stage. This revealed an IC50 of up to 45 ± 2.5 µg/mL, in contrast to the values obtained from the crude extracts of less than 100 µg/mL. The TLC, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (HPLC–MS) techniques were used to identify the compounds, demonstrating the presence of sesquiterpene lactones, parthenin, and coronopolin. We concluded that these compounds have the potential to inhibit T. cruzi growth.
