The use of Cr-EDTA for estimation of intra-diurnal variations of the reticulo-ruminal fill was studied using six sheep fed ad lib. grass hay twice a day. The results are compared with those obtained by manual emptying of the reticulo-rumen.

1. A method for gas-liquid chromatographic analysis of the dimethyl esters of a homologous series of diabolic acids is described. 2. Only when combined with low-resolution mass spectrometry could the method be used to show unequivocally the existence of diabolic acids in natural products. 3. Diabolic acids occurred naturally in rumen and faecal lipids of all ruminants examined but could not be detected in a number of ruminant tissue samples. 4. Infused 14C-labelled (C16:0)2 diabolic acid was poorly absorbed by both simple-stomached and ruminant animals. Oxidation was more extensive in the ruminant, but there was no evidence of deposition of diabolic acid in the tissues of either animal.

Twenty-four half-sib Brahman bulls (171 to 276 d of age; 140.9 to 243.2 kg) were paired by age and weight and randomly allotted to one of two treatment groups (12 bulls/treatment) with two replicates (six bulls/replicate). Control treatment (C) was a 4:1 corn (IFN 4-02-931):cotton-seed meal (IFN 3-01-621) diet fed at 1% of the average body weight plus Coastal bermudagrass hay (IFN 1-00-716) ad libitum. Lasalocid treatment (L) was the control diet with the addition of 200 mg lasalocid X head-1 X d-1. Lasalocid resulted in lower acetate and butyrate with higher propionate and no change in total ruminal volatile fatty acids. Lasalocid-fed bulls tended to gain more weight (L = 153.6 +/- 8.5 kg, C = 138.4 +/- 7.9 kg; P less than .08), tended to have a greater average daily gain (ADG; L = .78 +/- .05 kg/d, C = .71 +/- .04 kg/d; P less than .09) and had greater feed conversion (11.5% less feed/kg gain) than did the control bulls. Lasalocid did not affect bull height (HT), weight:height ratio, length (LE) or heart girth (HG) at any time tested during puberal development. Lasalocid bulls exhibited a greater increase in HG through 175 d on treatment (L = 27.6 +/- 1.0 cm, C = 24.3 +/- 1.8 cm; P less than .05) and through first detected sperm (FS) in an ejaculate (L = 30.1 +/- 2.2 cm, C = 26.1 +/- 1.4 cm; P less than .05), but the increase in HG from the start of the trial through puberty was not different between treatments.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Lignin-carbohydrate complexes, isolated from cell-free rumen fluid of sheep, consisted of polyphenolic material in association with carbohydrate (5.5%) and protein (1.8%). No separation of carbohydrate from the other components could be effected. The complexes showed a bimodal distribution of molecular size with the higher-molecular-weight fraction richer in carbohydrate. Methylation analysis indicated a wide range of linkages and a high proportion of terminal sugars. Reducing sugars were found in the complexes, particularly in the low-molecular-weight fraction (approximately 25%), suggesting that ether linkages to the phenolics were also present.

Samples of liver, rumen wall, and rumen mucosa (rumen wall stripped of its muscle) were assayed for vitamin B12 by specific and nonspecific methods. Mean differences between methods were negligible. Rumen mucosa and rumen wall contained approximately 10% as much vitamin B12 as liver. The B12 contents of liver and rumen mucosa were correlated whereas those of liver and rumen wall were not.

The purpose of this study was to examine the bovine rumen liquor wax esters and compare them with those of the dietary white clover leaf and stem tissues (Body, D.R. (1974) Phytochemistry 13, 1527-1530). The major fatty acid composition of the total bovine rumen liquor wax esters was made up of saturated fatty acids (62.1%) including palmitic (20.4%), stearic (16.2%) and other acids over the n-C19-n-C30 range (20.5%). However, 13.2% phytanic acid was also present. Of the two major fatty alcohol components, dihydrophytol (33.4%) and triacontanol (20.2%) were the principal contributors. Approximately 30% of the total intact rumen liquor wax esters was a series of dihydrophytyl wax esters. These represented 0.6% of the total rumen liquor lipid extract. Individually they were comprised of dihydrophytyl palmitate (0.05%), dihydrophytyl phytanate (0.10%) and dihydrophytyl n-C18 fatty acids (0.45%). The appearance of saturated isoprenoid moieties was the most striking difference between the composition of rumen liquor and dietary white clover wax esters.

An experiment was designed to determine the effects of dietary monensin on age and weight at puberty in Bos taurus crossbred beef heifers. One hundred and forty heifers were allotted to two weight classes: heavy (H) and light (L) groups, consisting of heifers above and below the average weaning weight, respectively. Heifers within each weight class were assigned to one of three diets during a 203-d winter feeding period: (1) R, 80% roughage: 20% concentrate; (2) M1, R diet plus monensin (200 mg/head daily) with feed intake restricted to produce average daily gains (ADG) similar to R and (3) M2, R diet plus monensin (200 mg/head daily). ADG was higher (P less than .001) for M2 heifers than for R and M1 heifers, which performed similarly. Age and weight at puberty were similar across treatments in L heifers. However, in the H group, HM1 and HM2 heifers were younger (P less than .07) at puberty than HR heifers and this difference was not removed by covariate adjustment of either ADG or body weight. Weigh at puberty was greater (P less than .01) for HM2 heifers than for HM1 or HR heifers; however, this difference was removed by covariate adjustment of either ADG or body weight. Ninety-one percent of LM2 heifers and 100% of all other groups had reached puberty before the breeding season. Pregnancy rates did not differ significantly between treatment groups. Supplementation of a high roughage diet with monensin decreased age at puberty of heifers in the heavy weight class and this decrease was not due to increased body weight or ADG. Perhaps heifers with above average weaning weight possess a greater inherent growth potential than heifers below the average weaning weight and hence are more capable of utilizing monensin to an advantage.

Catalyzed phenol-hypochlorite and ninhydrin colorimetric procedures were adapted to the Technicon AutoAnalyzer for simultaneous determination of ammonia and total amino acids in ruminal fluid or ruminal in vitro media. The manifold developed was compatible with a sampling rate of 40/h without significant sample-to-sample carryover. With proper storage, reagents for both the phenol-hypochlorite and the air-stable ninhydrin systems were stable for 8 mo or more. Response of individual amino acids in the phenol-hypochlorite system were generally 1% or less than equimolar amounts of ammonia. Certain amino acids inhibited ammonia color yield 10 to 15% when with equimolar amounts of ammonia; however, the inhibitory effect of casein amino acids was only 2 to 3%. Although ninhydrin response, relative to leucine, of individual alpha-amino acids ranged from 62 (valine) to 151% (histidine), recoveries of casein amino acids from ruminal fluid had coefficients of variation of 1% or less. Coefficients of variation for ammonia recoveries from ruminal fluid by the phenol-hypochlorite procedure were about half of those for the Conway microdiffusion technique. Intraclass correlations for the adapted procedures indicated high degrees of accuracy and precision for both ammonia and amino acid analyses.

When diets containing 33 and 18 ppm monensin sodium were fed for ad libitum intake to dairy goats, milk fat content was reduced by 15 and 5%. Milk protein content was increased 10% when 33 ppm sodium monensin was fed with diet at restricted intake. Milk yield was not affected. Both ad libitum and restricted consumption of diet containing 33 ppm monensin sodium reduced ratios of ruminal acetate:propionate. These resulted from increased propionate concentration with ad libitum consumption and from reduced acetate with restricted feeding. Diets containing 18 ppm monensin sodium resulted in slightly higher concentrations of both propionate and acetate. Monensin sodium did not reduce feed intake significantly.

Using disc- and immunoelectrophoresis the protein spectrum of nuclear and mitochondrial fractions of the rumen mucosa and liver tissue was studied in growing bull calves feeding them various forms of the carbamide concentrate. The rumen mucosa nuclear fraction contains a less amount of water-soluble proteins but a greater amount of membrane proteins than the liver. In the rumen mucosa mitochondrial fraction the content of soluble and membrane proteins is considerably lower than in the liver. Soluble nuclear proteins of the rumen mucosa are more heterogeneous than those of the liver. No postablumins were revealed by disc-electrophoresis in the liver nuclei. Specific immunoglobulins were identified in the mucosa nuclear fraction by immunoelectrophoresis. The rumen mucosa mitochondrial fraction is characterized by the absence of postalbumins and transferrins in disc-electrophoregram. This post-transferrins of this tissue are shown to belong to specific immunoglobulins. Heterogeneity of albumin in the studied rumen mucosa subfractions is established. The extruded carbamide concentrate increases the content of membrane proteins in the nuclear and mitochondria fractions of bull calf rumen mucosa and changes the spectrum of soluble proteins of these subfractions.

A relatively simple and sensitive procedure was developed to measure the concentration of peptides in rumen fluid. Feed particles and microorganisms were removed by centrifugation, and the supernatant was treated with perchloric acid (5% final concentration). Perchloric acid precipitated macromolecules that included protein, RNA, and DNA. Perchlorate was subsequently removed by precipitation with an excess of potassium carbonate. Ammonia was removed by boiling the alkaline sample. Supernatant samples were then analyzed for ninhydrin reactive material before and after HCl hydrolysis. Because ninhydrin reaction was 3 to 7.5 times greater after HCl hydrolysis, peptides rather than amino acids were the primary source of nonprotein, nonammonia nitrogen. Rumen fluid from a cow fed timothy hay and concentrate supplement (16% crude protein) contained more than 1200 mg peptides/L (192 mg N/L), 1 h after feeding, and this value declined the prefeeding value of 400 mg/L (64 mg N/L) by 8 h after feeding. Comparison of ninhydrin reactivity with and without HCl hydrolysis indicated that peptides present before feeding contained more peptide bonds than the peptides soon after feeding. High pressure liquid chromatography revealed a variety of peaks soon after feeding and fewer dominant peaks 8 h later. The data suggest that peptide uptake into rumen microorganisms can be a rate-limiting step in ruminal protein degradation.

A biochemical examination was made of the blood and rumen fluid of 111 heifers and cows suffering from caecal dilatation, with or without torsion. Haematological values were normal in the majority of cattle. Concentrations of chloride were normal in the rumen fluid of 83 per cent of the animals and higher in the remainder. Nine cows that had to be slaughtered had higher bile concentrations than those which recovered. Twenty-eight per cent had increased blood urea concentrations probably due to dehydration.

Electron-microscopic observation of bovine fetal rumen reveals that the distribution and structure of glycogen are modified during fetal development. Both basal and superficial cells increase their glycogen content in fetuses up to 6 months of age. In older fetuses, the epithelial glycogen content diminishes. These morphological changes resemble the perinatal metabolic changes occurring in other organs.

An alternative exponential equation with a parameter as an exponent was compared to a recently published exponential procedure for estimating mean and median particle size. Both equations were fit to literature values for particle size distributions of esophageal extrusa, rumen digesta, and feces. In addition, 112 observations of particle-size distributions of esophageal extrusa were fit to both equations for comparison. Both equations gave adequate fits of rumen digesta and feces, but the earlier model was biased by regular deviations from observed data for esophageal extrusa. Use of the previously published model overestimated mean particle size in esophageal extrusa from 4.5 to 10.3%. Median particle size was underestimated from 4.9 to 5.6%. Analytic solutions exist for mean and median particle sizes for the earlier model, but it is necessary to estimate numerically the mean and median particle sizes when using the proposed equation. Even though the solution for the proposed equation must be determined numerically, it will prevent bias between experimental treatments, give more accurate estimates of mean and median particle size, and result in a lower residual sums of squares. In addition, a single equation can be used to model particle size reduction throughout the digestive tract.

Automated and continuous recording of ammonia concentration in rumen liquor (Godeau et al., 1986) was performed on four cows around their first calving. Results suggest an insufficient concentration in early lactation.

A method for the detection of andromedotoxin in plant material and relicta from cases of poisoning due to Rhododendron and other members of the Ericacea is described. This method, which overcomes the problems associated with basing the diagnosis on the clinical signs exhibited and untrained identification of plant materials, has been successfully applied to the investigation of a number of field outbreaks of Rhododendron poisoning in animals.

Three rumen fistulated sheep were fed with roughage (1200 g artificially dried grass) or a concentrate/roughage diet (600 g concentrate, 400 g artificially dried grass per animal and day). The diets were unsupplemented or 0.5, 1 and 2 g niacin per animal and day were added. After a 14-day adaptation period samples of rumen liquid were taken 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 h after morning feeding. In a second experiment untreated and NH3-treated wheat straw were incubated in nylon bags for 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 h in the rumen of 5 sheep fed with 1.2 kg artificially dried grass and unsupplemented or supplemented with 1 g niacin per day. Niacin did not significantly influence the total concentration of volatile fatty acids, acetate and branched chain fatty acids in both types of diet (P less than 0.05). 0.5 and 1 g niacin in the roughage and 0.5 g niacin in concentrate/roughage diet increased the propionic acid concentration and reduced the butyric acid concentration in rumen liquid of sheep (P less than 0.05). Niacin resulted in a small decrease (P greater than 0.05) of dry matter degradability in rumen. After 48 h incubation time, the dry matter disappearance of untreated and NH3-treated wheat straw amounted to 35.4 and 46.2% resp. The effects of niacin on rumen fermentation may be useful in avoiding ketogenic situations in dairy cows.

In unanesthetized adult sheep, following intake of a daily meal, there was a peak in K excretion. The maximum and minimum rates of K excretion following meals were directly related to meal K content. On days without meals, no peak in K excretion occurred. Changes in K excretion on fed and fast days occurred without changes in the low levels of plasma aldosterone and were poorly correlated with urine or blood pH, urine flow rate, Na excretion, or the filtered load of K, but they correlated well with fractional K excretion. Plasma K did not change on fast days. Plasma K increased on some, but not all, fed days. Increases in plasma K that occurred on fed days were insufficient to account for the concurrent kaliuresis. Infusion of aldosterone or isotonic NaCl failed to alter K excretion in fed or fasted sheep. Infusion of isotonic NaCl + aldosterone hypertonic Na2SO4 + aldosterone increased K excretion in fasted but not fed sheep. Infusion of K in the rumen of fed and fasted sheep elevated rumen K concentration and led to increases in K excretion that could not be explained by increases in plasma K. The mechanisms responsible for the homeostatic changes in K excretion on fed and fast days were not ascertained but may importantly depend on sensors of enteric K content.

Unlabelled: Four probes for the acquisition of rumen fluid in adult cattle were tested with regard to their usefulness (pump capacity): probe I = original instrument of Schambye-Sørensen, probe II = modified Schambye-Sørensen instrument, probe III = guidable instrument of Dirksen, probe IV = a simple "home made" plastic instrument with a metal suction head. In a first step bovine saliva was added in increasing quantities (in increments of 5% up to 50%) to normal rumen fluid samples collected via rumen fistula. Some relevant parameters of the rumen fluid were analyzed with these mixtures. The experiments were carried out in order to obtain data for the calculation of saliva inflow in samples collected by orally introduced probes. In a second step a sample of rumen fluid was aspirated from the ventral rumen sac via the fistula before each introduction of the rumen sound. Saliva inflow was calculated on the basis of the in vitro changes in pH and in Na+ and K+ concentrations noted with each 5% addition of saliva., Results: The pH value increased with the addition of saliva more markedly for samples with a lower initial value. The sodium concentration in the rumen fluid increased almost linearly by an average of 2.5 mmol/l, while potassium concentration decreased by approximately 1.4 mmol/l with each 5% increase of saliva. Chloride concentration of the physiologic rumen fluid was essentially unaffected by addition of saliva (up to 30%). The methylene blue reaction was slightly enhanced by admixture of 5 to 10% saliva and prolonged by greater volumes.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Four rumen-fistulated, Holstein steers (358 kg) were fed two diets at two frequencies (2 and 8 times/d) in a 4 X 4 Latin square design with 28-d periods. The two diets consisted of corn silage and a concentrate mixture in a ratio of 40:60 on a dry matter basis. The two concentrate mixtures (control and dried whole whey) contained, as a percentage: ground shelled corn, 87.85, 19.05; soybean meal, 9.4, 5.9; dicalcium phosphate, 1.7, 0; trace mineralized salt, 1.0, 1.0; vitamin A and D premix, .05, .05; and dried whole whey, 0, 74.0, respectively. Rumen fluid samples were taken at hourly intervals for 24 h and analyzed for pH, volatile fatty acids, lactate, ammonia nitrogen, and protozoal numbers. Total concentration of volatile fatty acids in the rumen were not affected by treatments. Feeding the control diet resulted in significantly higher ruminal acetate and isovalerate but lower butyrate and valerate expressed as a molar percentage. Increasing the feeding frequency from 2 to 8 times/d resulted in an increase in the molar percentage of acetate and a decrease in the concentration of lactate in ruminal fluid. Numbers of protozoa varied considerably with time after feeding and tended to be higher on the whey diet.

In a 4 X 4 Latin square experiment four cattle were given in two meals per d diets consisting of (g/kg dry matter (DM)) 500 barley, 400 grass silage and 100 soya-bean meal. The diets were given at either 1.15 (L) or 2.3 times (H) maintenance energy requirements and the soya-bean meal was either untreated (U) or formaldehyde-treated (T). A 24 h collection of duodenal digesta and a 7 d collection of faeces were made using chromium sesquioxide for flow estimation and 35S as a marker of microbial nitrogen entering the small intestine. Samples of rumen fluid were also taken for estimation of rumen pH, ammonia and volatile fatty acid concentrations. Spot samples of duodenal digesta were obtained after administration of Cr2O3-mordanted silage-fibre and soya-bean meal, to determine the rates of outflow of these markers from the rumen. Similar samples were also obtained after cessation of a continuous intraruminal infusion of ruthenium phenanthroline, 35S and CoEDTA. Incubations of each feedingstuff in porous synthetic fibre (psf) bags were carried out in the rumen and the rates of N disappearance from the bags determined. Increasing DM intake significantly (P less than 0.001) increased the quantities of organic matter (OM), total N and amino acid-N entering the small intestine and amounts subsequently voided in the faeces. Apparent digestibilities of OM and N were unaffected by DM intake; the proportions of total digestible OM digested in the rumen were significantly lower (P less than 0.01) at the higher level of DM intake. Formaldehyde treatment of the soya-bean meal increased the quantities of N entering the small intestine; these increases were not significant. Increased DM intake increased the quantities of both microbial N (P less than 0.001) and undegraded feed N (P less than 0.01) entering the small intestine; HCHO-treatment also significantly (P less than 0.05) increased the quantities of undegraded feed N entering the small intestine. The efficiency of microbial N synthesis within the rumen was not significantly affected by dietary treatments whereas apparent feed N degradability was reduced significantly (P less than 0.05) both by increasing DM intake and by HCHO-treatment of the soya-bean meal. Rates of disappearance of N from psf bags in the rumen were different for different feedingstuffs. However, for a given feedingstuff, the rate of N disappearance was not affected by the diets fed.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

An accidental poisoning (in 1977) of 28 Holstein cows occurred when approximately 0.9 kg of 25% active ingredient fonofos, O-ethyl S-phenyl ethylphosphonothiolothionate, was spilled onto bulk feed in a delivery truck. Eight cows died within 2 days; the remaining 20 were necropsied 29 days later. Of the 8 fatally poisoned, 7 were being fed a high-grain diet and 1 was fed a medium-grain diet. Fonofos concentrations in feed cart and storage bin samples were 100 micrograms/g and 61 micrograms/g, respectively. Tissues from 6 animals were analyzed extensively for fonofos concentrations: 2 had died immediately; the other 4 were in the recovery state when they were necropsied. Rumen contents and liver, kidney, brain, heart, and milk samples were analyzed. Fonofos concentrations in these samples were significantly higher in the cows fatally affected than in the cows necropsied 3 weeks later. The oral acute LD50 and LD1 of fonofos in Holstein cows were calculated by the Litchfield and Wilcoxon method to be 1.30 and 0.84 mg/kg, respectively, with a 95% confidence range of +/- 0.20 mg/kg.

Purified L (large) toxins of Clostridium botulinum type B and C are more stable than M (medium) toxins in ruminal contents of cattle. That finding suggests that the stabilities of L toxins are in part responsible for the incidence of intoxication of cattle.

The Cd-determination of 10 different winter grazings for wild ruminants in seven different biotopes showed significant differences of the habitats resulting from the previous Cd-emission of metallurgy smelting non-ferrous metals. The winter grazing of the Tharandt Forest and the Harz mountains contained significantly more Cd than that of the Lower Flaming hills, the western Erzgebirge and the northern agrarian areas. The bark and the tips of conifer twigs, twigs of oak and mountain ash, bilberry and heather plants, i. e. perennial plants resp. parts of plants proved to be particularly rich in Cd. On an average, wild ruminants consume more Cd than domesticated ruminants, which do not consume parts of perennial plants. The rumen contents of all wild ruminants contained, with 0.20 to 0.25 mg/kg dry matter more Cd than could be expected from the content of the grazing. In the Cd-contaminated areas the amount of Cd in the rumen contents too showed the Cd-load. The kidneys, livers and the covering hair of a total of 172 head red deer, roes and mouflons reflected the Cd-load and the dependence of the Cd-level on the age. The Cd-concentration ascertained in the organs of the wild ruminants was compared with that of sheep and cattle. The, on an average, higher Cd-load of the wild ruminants was confirmed. The kidneys of wild ruminants older than five years should, as a general principle, not be eaten and neither should the livers of animals from Cd-contaminated biotopes. The limb defects of mouflons from Cd-contaminated areas are discussed in connection with Cd-induced secondary Cu-deficiency resp. Mn- and Zn-deficiency. A reference is made to further works.

The determination of ribonucleic acid (RNA) in the duodenal digesta and the rumen microbes was carried out colorimetrically with orcinol after extraction with hot NaCl solution, precipitation with phosphotungstic acid and alkaline hydrolysis. 96 +/- 1% of the RNA supplemented to the digesta content was recovered (y +/- s, n = 5). The methodic error (repetition accuracy) was 1.1%. The relation of RNA-N:N (mg/g) in the bacteria mass amounted to 93.8 +/- 3.99 (y +/- s(-y), n = 48) and to 16.1 +/- 0.8 (y +/- s(-y), n = 51) mg RNA/g DM in the duodenal content.

The cell-free rumen liquor of a steer on a diet of spear grass has been shown to contain macromolecular substances in which carbohydrates and lignin-derived compounds are covalently bound to each other. The lignin-carbohydrate complexes are soluble at pH 7 or higher, but precipitate at pH 3. At the latter pH, small amounts of a polymer, assumed to be glycoprotein, remain in solution. Some of the lignin-carbohydrate linkages are broken by treatment with alkali. Treatment with 50mM sulphuric acid for a few minutes at room temperature converts part of the complex into an acetone-soluble product, which still contains both carbohydrate and lignin-derived compounds. The formation of soluble lignin-carbohydrate complexes by the action of rumen micro-organisms on the grass may account for the dissolution (and hence the apparent digestion) of about half of the total lignin-intake.

Diets with and without added fat and with different amounts of soluble and insoluble calcium were fed to rumencannulated cows to determine roles of fat and calcium in formation of insoluble calcium soaps in the rumen. Percent of total fatty acids in soap was increased only by addition of soluble calcium (CaCl2). The amount of fatty acid in soap was highly dependent on amount of fat in the rumen and was not changed by calcium addition. Concentration of ionized calcium in rumen content was halved by fat addition and was inversely correlated with rumen pH, whereas proportion of fatty acid in soap was directly related to pH. Rumen pH was lower 8 to 12 h postfeeding when calcium was added to the diet, which was related nonsignificantly with total volatile fatty acid concentration. Addition of fat to diets tended to lower the ratio of acetic to propionic acids in the rumen; this trend was reversed by calcium addition. Beneficial effects of added calcium in high fat diets were not caused by increased calcium soap formation in the rumen.

Four rumen-fistulated Holstein steers were fitted with cannulas for the collection of portal, jugular and carotid blood. In addition, the thoracic duct of one steer was cannulated for the collection of lymph. Steers were given .125, .25 or .5 g urea/kg body weight 16 hr after a previous feeding. Within 5 min after the administration of the .5-g dose, rumen ammonia increased from 9.7 to 32.0 mg/100 ml, rumen pH from 6.47 to 7.87; portal blood ammonia from 1.02 to 8.01 mg/100 ml, carotid blood ammonia from .18 to 1.17 mg/100 ml and jugular blood ammonia from .13 to .36 mg/100 ml. Lymph ammonia increased from .22 to .32 mg/100 ml within 15 minutes. The .125- and .25-g doses or urea produced proportionate changes. In a second experiment, three Jersey cows were given .5 g urea/kg body weight, and the rates at which urea appeared in carotid and jugular blood were determined. Only small amounts of urea appeared in carotid and jugular blood during the first 5 min after dosing, but the concentrations then increased slowly but progressively. We concluded that because carotid blood ammonia concentration increased so rapidly after dosing with urea, ammonia must leak past the liver, and it is therefore unlikely, that there is a liver threshold for ammonia which must be exceeded before ammonia will reach the carotid artery. The marked difference in ammonia concentrations in carotid and jugular blood suggests that the brain takes up ammonia rapidly. While some ammonia is absorbed via the lymph, and thus bypasses the liver, the lymph does not appear to be a major contributor of ammonia to carotid blood.

Results concerning the ruminal fluid growth requirement of the ruminal acetogen, Syntrophococcus sucromutans, indicate that octadecenoic acid isomers satisfy this essential requirement. Complex lipids, such as triglycerides and phospholipids, can also support growth. The cellular fatty acid and aldehyde composition closely reflects that of the lipid supplement provided to the cells. Up to 98% of the fatty acids and 80% of the fatty aldehydes are identical in chain length and degree of unsaturation to the octadecenoic acid supplement provided in the medium. S. sucromutans shows a tendency to have a greater proportion of the aldehyde form among its 18 carbon chains than it does with the shorter-chain simple lipids, which may be interpreted as a strategy to maintain membrane fluidity. 14C labeling showed that most of the oleic acid taken up from the medium was incorporated into the membrane fraction of the cells.

The second installment of information on studies over several years of the energy requirement of young female cattle comprises data of the feed intake, the digestibility and metabolizability of the rations used as well as the nitrogen and energy balances of the test animals in six experiments with varying rearing intensities, in which the N, C and energy balances as well as rumen physiologic values were measured monthly using the respiration test technique. Of four experiments, measured values are available over the whole rearing period from calf to calving. The results received from 680 interpretable test periods are-separated for the six experiments--arranged in aggregate form according to live weight range in order to characterize the development of nutrient and energy metabolization processes at various rearing intensities. The results form an essential basis for the derivation of the energy requirement of young female cattle according to factorial criteria.
