This research investigates how fourth-instar larvae of the potato tuber moth, Phthorimaea operculella, respond to plant secondary metabolites (sucrose, glucose, nicotine, and tannic acid) both in terms of gustatory electrophysiology and feeding behavior. The objective is to establish a theoretical foundation for employing plant-derived compounds in potato tuber moth control. We employed single-sensillum recording techniques and dual-choice leaf disk assays to assess the gustatory electrophysiological responses and feeding preferences of these larvae towards the mentioned compounds. Sensory neurons responsive to sucrose, glucose, nicotine, and tannic acid were identified in the larvae’s medial and lateral sensilla styloconica. Neuronal activity was influenced by stimulus type and concentration. Notably, the two types of sensilla styloconica displayed distinct response patterns for sucrose and glucose while they had similar firing patterns towards nicotine and tannic acid. Sucrose and glucose significantly promoted larval feeding, while nicotine and tannic acid had significant inhibitory effects. These findings demonstrate that the medial and lateral sensilla styloconica house sensory neurons sensitive to both feeding stimulants and inhibitors, albeit with differing response profiles and sensitivities. This study suggests that sucrose and glucose are promising candidates for feeding stimulants, while nicotine and tannic acid show potential as effective feeding inhibitors of P. operculella larvae.

This study aimed to investigate the effects and mechanisms of retinol and retinoic acid on primary duck intestinal epithelial cells under oxidative stress induced by H2O2. Different ratios of retinol and retinoic acid were used for treatment. The study evaluated the cell morphology, viability, antioxidative capacity, and barrier function of cells. The expression of genes related to oxidative stress and the intestinal barrier was analyzed. The main findings demonstrated that the treated duck intestinal epithelial cells exhibited increased viability, increased antioxidative capacity, and improved intestinal barrier function compared to the control group. High retinoic acid treatment improved viability and gene expression, while high retinol increased antioxidative indicators and promoted intestinal barrier repair. Transcriptome analysis revealed the effects of treatments on cytokine interactions, retinol metabolism, PPAR signaling, and cell adhesion. In conclusion, this study highlights the potential of retinol and retinoic acid in protecting and improving intestinal cell health under oxidative stress, providing valuable insights for future research.

Abstract Background Systemic sclerosis (SSc), an autoimmune disease with unknown etiology and pathogenesis, is characterized by abnormal autoimmunity, vascular dysfunction, and progressive fibrosis of skin and organs. Studies have shown that a key factor in the pathogenesis of SSc is aberrant activation of CD4+ T cells. Our previous studies have shown that a global hypomethylation state of CD4+ T cells is closely related to aberrant activation. However, the exact mechanism of hypomethylation in CD4+T cells is not yet clear. Methods Illumina HiSeq 2500 Platform was used to screen differentially expressed genes and explore the role of OASL, TET1, and IRF1 in the abnormal activation of CD4+T cells in SSc. Finally, double luciferase reporter gene experiments were used to analyze the interaction between IRF1 and TET1. Results OASL overexpression could upregulate TET1 to increase the hydroxymethylation levels of CD4+ T cells and induce high expression of functional proteins (CD40L and CD70), thus promoting CD4+T cell aberrant activation. Moreover, OASL upregulated TET1 via IRF1 signaling activation, and a double luciferase reporter gene experiment revealed that IRF1 can bind to the TET1 promoter region to regulate its expression. Conclusions OASL participates in the regulation of abnormal hypomethylation of CD4+ T cells in SSc, which implies a pivotal role for IFN signaling in the pathogenesis of SSc. Regulating DNA methylation and IFN signaling may serve as therapeutic treatments in SSc.

Abstract Background Comprehensive antitumor therapy through integrated multimodal means has drawn increasing attention owing to its high efficiency and metastasis suppression. Results We describe a synergistic triple protocol combining photothermal and sonodynamic therapy (PTT and SDT), together with immune checkpoint blockade for the inhibition of breast cancer growth and metastases in the 4T1 mouse model. PTT and SDT are synergistically augmented by a novel multimodal imaging nanoprobe integrated with cancer cell membrane-biomimetic nanoparticles (CHINPs) loaded with superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) and hematoporphyrin monomethyl ether (HMME). CHINPs exhibit excellent homologous tumor targeting, and are sequentially triggered by ultrasound and near infrared (NIR) light under the guidance of magnetic resonance, photoacoustic and photothermal imaging, leading to complete in situ tumor eradication and systemic anti-tumor immune activation. Further combination of this approach with immune checkpoint blockade therapy is shown to suppress tumor metastasis. Conclusion This work provides proof-of-principle for triple therapy using multimodal imaging-guided PTT/SDT based on biomimetic nanoprobes in combination with immunotherapy to eliminate tumors. For energy-efficient accelerators in data centers that leverage advances in the performance and energy efficiency of recent algorithms, flexible architectures are critical to support state-of-the-art algorithms for various deep learning tasks. Due to the matrix multiplication units at the core of tensor operations, most recent programmable architectures lack flexibility for layers with diminished dimensions, especially for inferences where a large batch axis is rarely allowed. In addition, exploiting the data reuse inherent within tensor operations for computing a single matrix multiplication is challenging. In this work, an extension of a vector processor in 14 nm is proposed, which is customized to tensor operations. The flexible architecture enables a tensorized loop to support various data layouts and different shapes and sizes of tensor operations. It also exploits all possible data reuse, including input, weight, and output. Based on the tensorized loop, fetch and reduction networks, which unicast or multicast with the ordering of both input data and processing data, can be simplified using a circuit-switching-like network with configured topology and flow control for each tensor operation. Two processing elements can be fused to optimize latency for a large model or can operate individually for throughput. As a result, various state-of-the-art models can be processed efficiently with straightforward compiler optimization, and the highest energy efficiency of 13.4Inferences/s/W on EfficientNetV2-S is demonstrated.

Formation of graded biomaterials to render shape-morphing scaffolds for 4D biofabrication holds great promise in fabrication of complex structures and the recapitulation of critical dynamics for tissue/organ regeneration. Here we describe a facile generation of an adjustable and robust gradient using a single- or multi-material one-step fabrication strategy for 4D biofabrication. By simply photocrosslinking a mixed solution of a photocrosslinkable polymer macromer, photoinitiator (PI), UV absorber and live cells, a cell-laden gradient hydrogel with pre-programmable deformation can be generated. Gradient formation was demonstrated in various polymers including poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), alginate, and gelatin derivatives using various UV absorbers that present overlap in UV spectrum with that of the PI UV absorbance spectrum. Moreover, this simple and effective method was used as a universal platform to integrate with other hydrogel-engineering techniques such as photomask-aided microfabrication, photo-patterning, ion-transfer printing, and 3D bioprinting to fabricate more advanced cell-laden scaffold structures. Lastly, proof-of-concept 4D tissue engineering was demonstrated in a study of 4D bone-like tissue formation. The strategy's simplicity along with its versatility paves a new way in solving the hurdle of achieving temporal shape changes in cell-laden single-component hydrogel scaffolds and may expedite the development of 4D biofabricated constructs for biological applications.

Background: It has been suggested that genetic factors may be substantially linked to allergy disorders. This study aims to investigate the relationship between the genetic susceptibility of Chinese patients with allergy disorders and the polymorphisms of plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 gene (PAI-1) rs1799762, cysteinyl leukotriene receptor 1 gene (CYSLTR1) rs320995, gasdermin B gene (GSDMB) rs7216389, glycoprotein IIIa gene (GPIIIa) rs5918, glycoprotein Ib alpha gene (GP1BA) rs6065, platelet endothelial aggregation receptor 1 gene (PEAR1) rs12041331, and tumor necrosis factor alpha gene (TNF-α) rs1800629.Methods: From the Peking Union Medical College Hospital, this study enrolled 60 healthy participants and 286 participants with allergic diseases. TaqMan-minor groove binder (MGB) quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) was used to examine the gene polymorphisms in each group.Results: The TaqMan-MGB qPCR results were completely consistent with the DNA sequencing results, according to other studies in this medical center (Kappa = 1, p < .001). Only the distribution of PAI-1 rs1799762 was different between patients with allergic cough and healthy people (χ2 = 7.48, p = .0238). With regard to cough patients, the 4G4G and 5G5G genotypes were more frequent (allergic cough vs. healthy individuals: 4G4G 57.9% vs. 26.7%; 5G5G 20.0% vs. 13.3%), but the 4G5G genotype was more frequent in healthy people (allergic cough vs. healthy individuals: 45.7% vs. 60.0%). The CYSLTR1 rs320995, GSDMB rs7216389, GPIIIa rs5918, GP1BA rs6065, PEAR1 rs12041331, and TNF-α rs1800629 polymorphisms, however, did not show any of such relationships.Conclusion: The PAI-1 rs1799762 polymorphisms may be associated with the genetic susceptibility of Chinese allergic disease patients with cough performance.

Electroactive biofilm plays a crucial rule in the electron transfer efficiency of microbial electrochemical systems (MES). However, the low ability to form biofilm and the low conductivity of the formed biofilm substantially limit the extracellular electron transfer rate of microbial cells to the electrode surfaces in MES. To promote biofilm formation and enhance biofilm conductivity, we develop synthetic biology approach to systematically engineer Shewanella oneidensis, a model exoelectrogen, via modular manipulation of the full-cycle different stages of biofilm formation, namely, from initial contact, cell adhesion, and biofilm growth stable maturity to cell dispersion. Consequently, the maximum output power density of the engineered biofilm reaches 3.62 ± 0.06 W m−2, 39.3-fold higher than that of the wild-type strain of S. oneidensis, which, to the best our knowledge, is the highest output power density that has ever been reported for the biofilms of the genetically engineered Shewanella strains.

Introduction: Cotton is an important economic crop to provide natural fibers as raw materials to textile industry, and is significantly affected by biotic and abiotic stress during the whole growth stage, in which Verticillium wilt (VW) caused by Verticillium dahliae is one of the most destructive disease to lead to a significant yield reduction. Heat shock proteins (Hsps) are important molecular chaperones, and play crucial roles in plant growth, development, resistance to biotic and abiotic stress. Hsp40 and Hsp70 are two key Hsps in cell chaperone network, however, the function and regulatory mechanism of Hsp40 and Hsp70 members in VW resistance and abiotic stress in cotton are largely unknown.Methods and Results: Herein, a systematic and comprehensive analysis of Hsp40s and Hsp70s in four cotton species of Gossypium arboretum, G. raimondii, G. hirsutum, and G. barbadense were performed. A total of 291 Hsp40s and 171 Hsp70s identified in four Gossypium species. Sequence analysis revealed that all Hsp40 proteins contained J domain that provides the binding sites to Hsp70. Protein-protein interaction prediction analysis displayed that GhHsp40-55 might interact with GhHsp70-2 and GhHsp70-13, suggesting their potential function as protein complex. Promoter cis-acting element analysis demonstrated that multiple cis-elements related to disease and stress response consists in GhHsp40 and GhHsp70 promoters. Further expression analysis showed that eight GhHsp40s (Hsp40-2,4,8,11,20,23,53,55) and seven GhHsp70s (Hsp70-2,3,6,8,13,19,22) were up-regulated after V. dahliae infection. In addition, five GhHsp40s (Hsp40-2,8,11,53,55) and four GhHsp70s (Hsp70-3,6,8,13) were up-regulated after salt treatment, six GhHsp40s (Hsp40-4,11,20,23) and three GhHsp70s (Hsp70-2,8,19) were up-regulated after drought treatment, four GhHsp40s (Hsp40-2,11,20,23) and four GhHsp70s (Hsp70-3,6,19,22) were up-regulated after temperature treatment, suggesting these Hsps have possible important function in the process of abiotic stress response.Discussion: Our results lay a foundation for understanding the function of Hsp40 and Hsp70 in the resistance against V. dahliae and abiotic stress, and elucidating the regulatory mechanism of the protein complex, evolution and molecular mechanism under stress.

Background High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) has shown considerable promise in treating solid tumors, but its ultrasonic energy is easily attenuated, resulting in insufficient energy accumulation in the target area. Moreover, HIFU ablation alone may inevitably lead to the presence of residual tumors, which may cause tumor recurrence and metastasis. Here, we describe a synergistic regimen combining HIFU facilitation with immunomodulation based on a novel oxygen-carrying biomimetic perfluorocarbon nanoparticle (M@P-SOP) to stimulate immunogenic cell death in tumor cells while alleviating immune suppression tumor microenvironment.Methods M@P-SOP was prepared by double emulsion and film extrusion method. The anticancer and antimetastatic effects of M@P-SOP were evaluated on a preclinical transplanted 4T1 tumor model by combining HIFU and immunotherapy. Flow cytometry and immunofluorescence were used to clarify the potential mechanism of HIFU+M@P-SOP and their role in anti-programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1) therapy.Results Guided by photoacoustic/MR/ultrasound (US) multimodal imaging, M@P-SOP was abundantly enriched in tumor, which greatly enhanced HIFU’s killing of tumor tissue in situ, induced stronger tumor immunogenic cell death, stimulated dendritic cell maturation and activated CD8+ T cells. At the same time, M@P-SOP released oxygen to alleviate the tumor hypoxic environment, repolarizing the protumor M2-type macrophages into antitumor M1-type. With concurrent anti-PD-L1 treatment, the antitumor immune response was further amplified to the whole body, and the growth of mimic distant tumor was effectively suppressed.Conclusions Our findings offer a highly promising HIFU synergist for effectively ameliorating acoustic and hypoxia environment, eventually inhibiting tumor growth and metastasis by stimulating host’s antitumor immunity under HIFU ablation, especially in synergizing with PD-L1 antibody immunotherapy.

In order to explore the dynamic mechanical properties of concrete under biaxial compression-compression, a true triaxial instrument was used to conduct an experimental study on the dynamic mechanical properties of plain concrete under biaxial compression-compression. Eight different lateral compressive stresses (0 MPa~14 MPa) and four strain (10−5/s, 10−4/s, 10−3/s and 10−2/s) rate were considered. From this, the effects of lateral compressive stress and loading strain rate on the biaxial compression-compression properties of concrete were compared and analyzed by obtaining the failure modes, principal compressive stress-strain curves and related mechanical characteristic parameters of plain concrete under different loading conditions. The research results show that: with the increase of lateral compressive stress, the failure modes of concrete were developed from columnar failure at low lateral compressive stress to sheet-like failure at high lateral compressive stress. With the increase of lateral stress, the development trend of concrete failure mode decreased gradually under the influence of strain rate. With the increase of lateral compressive stress, the variation range of concrete principal compressive stress decreased first and then tended to be relatively stable under the influence of strain rate. With the increase of strain rate, the increase range of concrete principal compressive stress decreased under the influence of lateral compressive stress. The influence mechanism of lateral compressive stress and strain rate on biaxial compression-compression performance of concrete was analyzed. Meanwhile, based on Kupfer biaxial compression failure criterion, a biaxial compression dynamic failure criterion model considering the effect of loading strain rate on plain concrete was proposed. The research results provided an important theoretical basis for the application and development of concrete engineering.

Abstract Background The development and optimization of therapies for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is currently hindered by a lack of methods for early non-invasive monitoring of treatment response. Annexin A2, an inflammation-associated protein whose presence and phosphorylation levels are upregulated in RA, represents a potential molecular target for tracking RA treatment response. Methods LS301, a near-infrared dye-peptide conjugate that selectively targets tyrosine 23-phosphorylated annexin A2 (pANXA2), was evaluated for its utility in monitoring disease progression, remission, and early response to drug treatment in mouse models of RA by fluorescence imaging. The intraarticular distribution and localization of LS301 relative to pANXA2 was determined by histological and immunohistochemical methods. Results In mouse models of spontaneous and serum transfer-induced inflammatory arthritis, intravenously administered LS301 showed selective accumulation in regions of joint pathology including paws, ankles, and knees with positive correlation between fluorescent signal and disease severity by clinical scoring. Whole-body near-infrared imaging with LS301 allowed tracking of spontaneous disease remission and the therapeutic response after dexamethasone treatment. Histological analysis showed preferential accumulation of LS301 within the chondrocytes and articular cartilage in arthritic mice, and colocalization was observed between LS301 and pANXA2 in the joint tissue. Conclusions We demonstrate that fluorescence imaging with LS301 can be used to monitor the progression, remission, and early response to drug treatment in mouse models of RA. Given the ease of detecting LS301 with portable optical imaging devices, the agent may become a useful early treatment response reporter for arthritis diagnosis and drug evaluation.

BackgroundCow’s milk protein allergy (CMPA) is a common allergy. Immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated cow’s milk allergy is associated with a high mortality risk and poor prognosis. The study aims to investigate whether there are different clinically CMPA phenotypes in China and to explore the association between CMPA phenotypes and specific IgE (sIgE) antibodies against different dairy products.MethodsSerum sIgE against different animal milk and cow’s milk products and different milk components was measured by an allergen array. Four CMPA classifications were identified by the presence of serum sIgE: boiled milk-positive, yogurt-positive, buttermilk-positive, and raw milk-positive.ResultsAmong the 234 participants included in the study, 9 were boiled milk sIgE-positive, 50 were yogurt sIgE-positive, 17 were buttermilk sIgE-positive, and 158 were only raw milk sIgE-positive. The boiled milk-positive group had the highest levels of raw milk sIgE and casein sIgE antibodies, followed sequentially by the yogurt-positive, buttermilk-positive, and raw milk-positive groups. The boiled milk group observed the highest levels of sIgE against raw milk, casein, α-lactalbumin, and β-lactoglobulin. These levels differed significantly from those in the other three groups. Allergic symptoms were distributed differently among the four study groups. The percentages of allergic patients with gastrointestinal tract symptoms in the above mentioned four groups ranged from high to low, and the percentages of patients with skin symptoms in the four groups ranged from low to high, respectively.ConclusionBased on dairy product sIgE antibody levels associated with different milk components and various clinical allergic symptom tendencies, we could distinguish four CMPA phenotypes.

During the normalization stage of the COVID-19 epidemic prevention and control, the safety threats caused by improper epidemic prevention measures of airlines have become the primary concern for air passengers. Negative e-WOM related to safety perception obtained based on online multimodal reviews of travel websites has become an important decision-making basis for potential air passengers when making airline choices. This study aims to examine the relationship between potential air passengers’ negative safety perception and the usefulness of online reviews, as well as to test the moderating effect of review modality and airline type. It also further explores the effectiveness and feasibility of applying big data sentiment analysis to e-WOM management. To this end, the theoretical model of negative safety perception, review modality, and airline type affecting review usefulness was constructed. Then we select 10 low-cost airlines and 10 full-service airlines, respectively, according to the number of reviews sorted by the TripAdvisor website, and use crawling techniques to obtain 10,485 reviews related to COVID-19 safety of the above companies from December 2019 to date, and conduct safety perception sentiment analysis based on Python’s Textblob library. Finally, to avoid data overdispersion, the model is empirically analyzed by negative binomial regression using R software. The results indicate that (1) Negative safety perception significantly and negatively affects review usefulness, that is, extreme negative safety perception can provide higher review usefulness for potential air passengers. (2) Review modality and airline type have a significant moderating effect on the relationship between negative safety perception and review usefulness, in which multimodal reviews and full-service airlines both weakened the negative impact of negative safety perception on review usefulness. The theoretical model in this paper is both an extension of the application of big data sentiment analysis techniques and a beneficial supplement to current research findings of e-WOM, providing an important reference for potential air passengers to identify useful reviews accurately and thus reduce safety risks in online decision-making.

Objectives: Elderly lung cancer patients often have chronic diseases other than lung cancer. Therefore, this kind of population is often accompanied by polypharmacy. This situation and the resulting potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) use are an increasing global concern. In this context, the Chinese Association of Geriatric Research issued an expert consensus on the safety management of polypharmacy. However, the long- and short-term effects of the expert consensus on polypharmacy and PIM use are not clear.Methods: The study was conducted in Chengdu, a city in southwestern China, consisting of prescriptions for elderly lung cancer outpatients with multimorbidity (cancer with other diseases) from January 2016 to December 2021. The 2019 Beers criteria were used to evaluate PIM use, and interrupted time series analysis was used to evaluate the longitudinal effectiveness of expert consensus by measuring the prevalence of polypharmacy and PIM use. We used R software version 4.2.0 for data analysis.Results: A total of 7,238 elderly lung cancer outpatient prescriptions were included in the study. After the publication of the expert consensus, the level (β = -10.273, P < 0.001) of the prevalence of polypharmacy decreased, but the trend (β = 0.158, p = 0.855) of polypharmacy increased. The prevalence of PIM use decreased abruptly (β = -22.828, p < 0.001) after the intervention, but the long-term trend was still upward (β = 0.907, p = 0.916).Conclusion: The long-term effects of the publication of the expert consensus on the prevalence of polypharmacy and PIM use in hospitals in Chengdu were not optimal. Future research on interventions rationing polypharmacy and PIM use is needed.

BackgroundPyroptosis and prostate cancer (PCa) are closely related. The role of pyroptosis-related long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) (PRLs) in PCa remains elusive. This study aimed to explore the relationship between PRL and PCa prognosis.MethodsGene expression and clinical signatures were obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas and Gene Expression Omnibus databases. A PRL risk prediction model was established by survival random forest analysis and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression. Functional enrichment, immune status, immune checkpoints, genetic mutations, and drug susceptibility analyses related to risk scores were performed by the single-sample gene set enrichment analysis, gene set variation analysis, and copy number variation analysis. PRL expression was verified in PCa cells. Cell Counting Kit-8, 5-ethynyl-2′-deoxyuridine, wound healing, transwell, and Western blotting assay were used to detect the proliferation, migration, invasion, and pyroptosis of PCa cells, respectively.ResultsPrognostic features based on six PRL (AC129507.1, AC005253.1, AC127502.2, AC068580.3, LIMD1-AS1, and LINC01852) were constructed, and patients in the high-score group had a worse prognosis than those in the low-score group. This feature was determined to be independent by Cox regression analysis, and the area under the curve of the 1-, 3-, and 5-year receiver operating characteristic curves in the testing cohort was 1, 0.93, and 0.92, respectively. Moreover, the external cohort validation confirmed the robustness of the PRL risk prediction model. There was a clear distinction between the immune status of the two groups. The expression of multiple immune checkpoints was also reduced in the high-score group. Gene mutation proportion in the high-score group increased, and the sensitivity to drugs increased significantly. Six PRLs were upregulated in PCa cells. Silencing of AC005253.1 inhibited cell proliferation, migration, and invasion in DU145 and PC-3 cells. Moreover, silencing of AC005253.1 promoted pyroptosis and inflammasome AIM2 expression.ConclusionsOverall, we constructed a prognostic model of PCa with six PRLs and identified their expression in PCa cells. The experimental verification showed that AC005253.1 could affect the proliferation, migration, and invasion abilities of PCa cells. Meanwhile, AC005253.1 may play an important role in PCa by affecting pyroptosis through the AIM2 inflammasome. This result requires further research for verification.

Injury to the adult mammalian central nervous system induces compensatory plasticity of spared axons—referred to as collateral axon sprouting—that can facilitate neural recovery. The contribution of reactive astrocytes to axon sprouting remains elusive. Here, we sought to investigate the role of axon degeneration-reactive astrocytes in the regulation of collateral axon sprouting that occurs in the mouse spinal cord after unilateral photothrombotic stroke of the primary motor cortex. We identified astrocytic leucine zipper-bearing kinase (LZK) as a positive regulator of astrocyte reactivity to corticospinal axon degeneration. Remarkably, genetic stimulation of astrocyte reactivity, via LZK overexpression in adult astrocytes, enhanced corticospinal axon sprouting. LZK promoted the production of astrocyte-derived ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) that likely enhanced axon growth in mice with astrocytic LZK overexpression after injury. Our finding that LZK-dependent stimulation of astrocyte reactivity promotes corticospinal axon sprouting highlights the potential of engineering astrocytes to support injury-induced axon plasticity for neural repair.

Particle settling is the process by which particulates move toward the bottom of a liquid, which can affect the sediment transport and energy balance of marine systems. However, the deficiency in understanding the resolved fluid–particle interactions with complex boundaries in the settling process awaits resolution. This study employs a hybrid approach that combines computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with the discrete element method (DEM) to fully simulate the free-settling behavior of polyhedral particles in water. The accuracy of the method is verified by comparing numerical results with experimental data of ellipsoidal particle settling. Two series of tests with horizontal and vertical particle release directions are established to investigate the effects of particle shape features, such as the aspect ratio (AR) and corner (C), on the particles’ mechanical behavior and hydrodynamic characteristics. The results demonstrate that particle shape exerts a substantial influence on fluid resistance, rotational motion, and fluid disturbance throughout the settling process. The maximum velocities in vertically released cases are roughly 1.2–1.3 times greater than those in horizontally released cases. The study highlights the potency of the resolved CFD-DEM method as a robust technique for comprehending fluid–particle phenomena within the marine geotechnical engineering, including sedimentation and erosion of seabed sediments.

Purple-grained wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is an important germplasm source in crop breeding. Anthocyanin biosynthesis in the pericarps of purple-grained wheat is largely light-dependent; however, the regulatory mechanisms underlying light-induced anthocyanin accumulation in the wheat pericarp remain unknown. Here we determined that anthocyanins rapidly accumulate in the pericarps of the purple-grained wheat cultivar Heixiaomai 76 (H76) at 16 days after pollination under light treatment. Using transcriptome sequencing, differential gene expression analysis, and phylogenetic analysis, we identified two key genes involved in light signaling in wheat: ELONGATED HYPOCOTYL 5-7A (TaHY5-7A) and B-BOX-3B (TaBBX-3B). TaHY5-7A and TaBBX-3B were highly expressed in purple-grained wheat pericarps. The heterologous expression of TaHY5-7A partially restored the phenotype of the Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) hy5 mutant, resulting in increased anthocyanin accumulation and a shortened hypocotyl. The heterologous expression of TaBBX-3B in wild-type Arabidopsis had similar effects. TaHY5-7A and TaBBX-3B were nucleus-localized, consistent with a function in transcription regulation. However, TaHY5-7A, which lacks a transactivation domain, was not sufficient to activate the expression of PURPLE PERICARP-MYB 1 (TaPpm1), the key anthocyanin biosynthesis regulator in purple pericarps of wheat. TaHY5-7A physically interacted with TaBBX-3B in yeast two-hybrid and bimolecular fluorescence complementation assays. Additionally, TaHY5-7A, together with TaBBX-3B, greatly enhanced the promoter activity of TaPpm1 in a dual luciferase assay. Overall, our results suggest that TaHY5-7A and TaBBX-3B collaboratively activate TaPpm1 expression to promote light-induced anthocyanin biosynthesis in purple-pericarp wheat.

Strawberry is a worldwide demanded edible fruit with high economic and nutritional value; however, a very short storage life largely limits its supply and marketing. In this study, strawberries were treated using sodium selenite with different concentrations (6, 12, 18, and 24 mg/L), and the postharvest fruit quality and resistance to Botrytis cinerea were substantially assessed. Among all concentrations, 12 mg/L Se was the most effective treatment, which maintained fruit skin brightness, reduced natural decay incidence, severity, and weight loss, increased the Se content in fruit, and thus maintained the postharvest fruit quality of the strawberry. Furthermore, strawberries treated with 12 mg/L Se had lower flavonoid, phenolic, anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins, H2O2, and O2− contents compared to the control and, correspondingly, lower antioxidant capacity; moreover, 12 mg/L Se treatment decreased the decay incidence and severity caused by the infection of B. cinerea. Collectively, our findings may provide a reference for developing safe and environmentally friendly alternative methods to sustain quality and manage gray mold in postharvest strawberries as well as other horticultural crops.

Due to factors such as uneven guide rails and airflow disturbance in the hoistway, high-speed elevators may experience significant vibrations during operation. This paper proposes an optimized fractional-order PID (FOPID) method to suppress vibrations of high-speed elevators. First, an accurate horizontal vibration model is established for the elevator car, in which the car frame and body are separate. Then, taking the control cost and the system performance as objective functions, we obtained an optimized FOPID controller based on multi-objective genetic algorithm optimization. Finally, the effectiveness of the controller in reducing elevator vibration was verified through numerical simulation. The results indicate that the horizontal acceleration controlled by the FOPID controller is reduced by about 68% compared to the case without a controller and about 25% compared to the conventional PID controller.

As an epitome of deep learning, convolutional neural network (CNN) has shown its advantages in solving many real-world problems. Successful CNN applications on medical prognosis and diagnosis have been achieved in recent years. Their common goal is to recognize the insights from the subtle details from medical images by building a suitable CNN model with maximum accuracy and minimum error. The CNN performance is extremely sensitive to the parameter tuning for any given network structure. To approach this concern, a novel self-tuning CNN model is proposed with a significant characteristic of having a metaheuristic-based optimizer. The most optimal set of parameters is often found via our proposed method, namely group theory and random selection-based particle swarm optimization (GTRS-PSO). The insights of symmetric essentials of model structure and parameter correlation are extracted, followed by the hierarchical partitioning of parameter space, and four operators on those partitions are designed for moving neighborhoods and formulating the swarm topology accordingly. The parameters are updated by a random selection strategy at each interval of partitions during the search process. Preliminary experiments over two radiology image datasets: breast cancer and lung cancer, are conducted for a comprehensive comparison of GTRS-PSO versus other optimization algorithms. The results show that CNN with GTRS-PSO optimizer can achieve the best performance for cancer image classifications, especially when there are symmetric components inside the data properties and model structures.

Abstract Whole exome sequencing (WES) is used to identify mutations in a patient’s tumor DNA that are predictive of tumor behavior, including the likelihood of response or resistance to cancer therapy. WES has a mutation limit of detection (LoD) at variant allele frequencies (VAF) of 5%. Putative mutations called at ≤ 5% VAF are frequently due to sequencing errors, therefore reporting these subclonal mutations incurs risk of significant false positives. Here we performed ~ 1000 × WES on fresh-frozen and formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue biopsy samples from a non-small cell lung cancer patient, and identified 226 putative mutations at between 0.5 and 5% VAF. Each variant was then tested using NuProbe NGSure, to confirm the original WES calls. NGSure utilizes Blocker Displacement Amplification to first enrich the allelic fraction of the mutation and then uses Sanger sequencing to determine mutation identity. Results showed that 52% of the 226 (117) putative variants were disconfirmed, among which 2% (5) putative variants were found to be misidentified in WES. In the 66 cancer-related variants, the disconfirmed rate was 82% (54/66). This data demonstrates Blocker Displacement Amplification allelic enrichment coupled with Sanger sequencing can be used to confirm putative mutations ≤ 5% VAF. By implementing this method, next-generation sequencing can reliably report low-level variants at a high sensitivity, without the cost of high sequencing depth.

In this work, alumina-graphene (Al2O3-G) composites with graphene contents ranging from 0.5 to 3% were prepared by stepwise feeding ball milling and hot pressing. The influences of graphene content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Al2O3-G composites were investigated. Results showed that the densification, grain sizes, flexural strength, fracture toughness and Vickers hardness of materials increased firstly and then decreased with increasing graphene contents. When the graphene content was 1%, the value of each performance parameter reached the maximum. The average grain size of material decreased from 991 to 551 nm as the graphene content increased from 0 to 1%, but it increased to 863 nm when the graphene content was 3%. The flexural strength, fracture toughness and Vickers hardness of composites with graphene content of 1% increased to 763.5 MPa, 7.4 MPa m1/2 and 21.28 GPa. Compared with the Al2O3, the fracture strength and toughness of the composites increased by up to 54.63 and 65.54%. Analysis suggested that the strength of Al2O3-G composites was mainly related to the grain size and preexisting microflaws.

Chemical pesticides are largely applied worldwide for the control of agricultural pests, and often cause lethal and sublethal side effects on natural enemies. To determine the compatibility of chemical pesticides, commonly used by maize growers, with Trichogramma ostriniae, the toxicities of four herbicides (pendimethalin, topramezone, glyphosate, and atrazine), three insecticides (imidacloprid, emamectin benzoate, and ethiofencarb), and three fungicides (propiconazole, benzoyl cyclazole, and difenoconazole) were tested under laboratory conditions, measuring residual toxicity to T. ostriniae adults, their lethal effects on the parasitoid’s eggs inside the host egg, and on the reproduction of the parasitoid’s female offspring. Three tested pesticides including ethiofencarb, glyphosate, and benzoyl cyclazole were slightly harmful to T. ostriniae adults, whereas the other seven pesticides were moderately harmful. The pesticide residues of ethiofencarb, and emamectin benzoate, showed slightly persistence of toxicity to T. ostriniae adults, in contrast to the remaining pesticides. BackgroundWe performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the detection rate (DR) of fluoro-prostate-specific membrane antigen (18F-PSMA-1007) PET/CT in patients with different serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels in the setting of primary staging of prostate cancer (PCa) or biochemically recurring PCa.MethodsA comprehensive electronic literature search of the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA statement. This study was registered in the PROSPERO database (registration number: CRD42022331595). We calculated the DR of 18F-PSMA-1007 PET/CT in PCa.ResultsThe final analysis included 15 studies that described 1,022 patients and 2,034 lesions with 18F-PSMA-1007 PET/CT in PCa. The DR of 18F-PSMA-1007 PET/CT in patients with PCa in primary staging ranged from 90% to 100%, with a pooled estimate of 94% (95% CI: 92%–96%). The DR of 18F-PSMA-1007 PET/CT in patients with PCa in BCR ranged from 47% to 100%, with a pooled estimate of 86% (95% CI: 76%–95%). The DRs of PSA levels >2.0, 1.1–2.0, 0.51–1.0, and ≤0.5 ng/ml detected by 18F-PSMA-1007 PET/CT in a patient-based analysis were 97% (95% CI: 93%–99%), 95% (95% CI: 88%–99%), 79% (95% CI: 68%–88%), and 68% (95% CI: 58%–78%), respectively.ConclusionThis meta-analysis concluded that 18F-PSMA-1007 PET/CT had a high application value for prostate cancer, including primary tumors and biochemical recurrence. BackgroundAllergic rhinoconjunctivitis (ARC) is an allergic disease that is characterized by conjunctival and nasal symptoms such as edema and congestion of conjunctiva, rhinorrhea, sneezing, and blocked nose. Seasonal ARC (SARC) is usually induced by seasonal allergens and often occurs at specific times during the year. Traditional treatments of SARC include nasal corticosteroids, antihistamines, and mast cell membrane stabilizers. Biological agents such as omalizumab have also been proved effective in the treatment of SARC.ObjectivesWe aim to certify the preventative efficacy of omalizumab for SARC and explore its influence factors.MethodsMedical records of 64 SARC patients were retrospectively analyzed, and generalized linear models were used to analyze influence factors of efficacy of omalizumab.ResultsCompared with forepassed pollen season without omalizumab treatment, the combined symptom and medication score (CSMS) of ARC with pre-seasonal omalizumab was significantly lower (with omalizumab: 0.67[0.00,1.83], without omalizumab: 4.00[2.83,4.96], p0.05).ConclusionPre-seasonal omalizumab treatment could significantly relieve SARC related symptoms and reduce medication use. This preventative efficacy would not be influenced by the dosage and number of injections of omalizumab. A single dose of 150mg omalizumab could achieve a satisfactory outcome.

The Kuroshio Extension (KE) region is one of the most energetic regions in the global ocean where prominent mesoscale dynamics persistently occur. The spatial distribution and temporal evolution of the sea surface temperature (SST) gradient and mesoscale eddies in the KE are investigated. The SST gradient can be applied for identifying the fronts, and the SST gradient within two times the radii of the eddies is composited to quantify the impact of eddies on frontal activities. Depressed SST gradients are identified for eddies with both polarities, but prominent spatial variance in the SST gradient reveals that a large SST gradient is located to the north of anticyclones and along the south periphery for cyclones. The eddies are further separated into two groups depending on their location relative to the main path of the KE, as the background fields to the north and south of the KE are largely different. The spatial pattern, e.g., monopole and dipole features, and temporal variation in the SST gradient are fully studied over the lifespans of eddies. The results show that most eddies can significantly weaken the internal SST gradient and induce the horizontal redistribution of the SST gradient in surrounding regions. Cyclonic eddies north of the KE elevate the fronts along the periphery of eddies. The temporal variability in the SST gradient is prominent and largely varies for each group of eddies. This study offers quantitative analyses of the spatial and temporal relationships between eddies and fronts that are important for understanding the mesoscale dynamics in the world’s oceans.

BackgroundSex-stratified medicine is an important aspect of precision medicine. We aimed to compare the incidence and risk factors of acute kidney injury (AKI) for critically ill men and women with sepsis. Furthermore, the short-term mortality was compared between men and women with sepsis associated acute kidney injury (SA-AKI).MethodThis was a retrospective study based on the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care IV database. We used the multivariable logistic regression analysis to evaluate the independent effect of sex on the incidence of SA-AKI. We further applied three machine learning methods (decision tree, random forest and extreme gradient boosting) to screen for the risk factors associated with SA-AKI in the total, men and women groups. We finally compared the intensive care unit (ICU) and hospital mortality between men and women with SA-AKI using propensity score matching.ResultsA total of 6463 patients were included in our study, including 3673 men and 2790 women. The incidence of SA-AKI was 83.8% for men and 82.1% for women. After adjustment for confounders, no significant association was observed between sex and the incidence of SA-AKI (odds ratio (OR), 1.137; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.949-1.361; p=0.163). The machine learning results revealed that body mass index, Oxford Acute Severity of Illness Score, diuretic, Acute Physiology Score III and age were the most important risk factors of SA-AKI, irrespective of sex. After propensity score matching, men had similar ICU and hospital mortality to women.ConclusionsThe incidence and associated risk factors of SA-AKI are similar between men and women, and men and women with SA-AKI experience comparable rates of ICU and hospital mortality. Therefore, sex-related effects may play a minor role in developing SA-AKI. Our study helps to contribute to the knowledge gap between sex and SA-AKI.

Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) system has been evolving and upgrading in the direction of high speed, long distance and large capacity. In recent years, with the maturity of high-speed optoelectronic devices, the research and application of beyond 400 Gbit/s has made a rapid progress. Based on the technical status and requirements of 800 Gbit/s transmission systems, this paper discusses the key technical problems, sorts out the latest developments in standardization research. The evolution and application of 800 Gbit/s optical systems is further discussed.

Papillary thyroid carcinoma, also known as PTC, is one of the commonest malignancies in the endocrine system. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in PTC could maintain proliferative signaling, induce therapeutic resistance, activate invasion and migration, and sustain stem cell-like characteristics. In this paper, results showed that lncRNA forkhead box P4 antisense RNA 1 (FOXP4-AS1) is downregulated in PTC tissues and cell lines. Patients in TCGA cohort with a higher FOXP4-AS1 expression showed a higher disease-free interval (DFI) rate, and the expression of FOXP4-AS1 is shown to be linked to the clinical stage, T stage, N stage, and extraglandular invasion condition of the TC patients. FOXP4-AS1 is localized in the cell cytoplasmic domain of PTC cells. Functionally, upregulated FOXP4-AS1 inhibited PTC cell proliferation, apoptosis, and migration, whereas it downregulated FOXP4-AS1-promoted progression of PTC. In vivo assay also confirmed the tumor inhibitory effect of FOXP4-AS1 in PTC growth. Mechanism analysis indicated that FOXP4-AS1 can play its functions by regulating the AKT signaling pathway, and AKT inhibitor treatment could attenuate the impact of FOXP4-AS1 on PTC progression. Furthermore, FOXP4-AS1 also negatively regulates the expression of its host gene FOXP4. Collectively, we showed that FOXP4-AS1 inhibited PTC progression although AKT signaling and FOXP4-AS1 plays a tumor-suppressor role in PTC tumorigenesis.

Abstract Electric double‐layer capacitors (EDLCs) that store electrical energy in the interface between an electrolyte and a solid electrode are favorable energy storage systems that demonstrate high‐power density, excellent cycle stability, and low environmental impact. To increase the operating voltage and improve the capacitance of EDLCs, it is essential to investigate the relationship between the degradation process and structural properties of activated carbon. In the current study, we used scanning electrochemical cell microscopy (SECCM) to assess the site‐specific degradation mechanisms caused by electrolyte decomposition. To simplify the structural properties of activated carbon, we used the highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) as a model substrate to distinguish the edge and the basal planes of activated carbon. The mobile and nanoscale electrochemical cell provides local cyclic voltammetry (CV) to examine the difference in the degradation process at the edge and basal planes of HOPG. SECCM's nanoscale electrochemical cell can suppress the impact of capacitive current and can therefore be used to clearly measure the current associated with degradation caused by electrolyte decomposition. SECCM's local CV measurements directly exposed the degradation reaction that occurred at the edge plane in the positive potential range.

Summary: Direct myocardial and vascular injuries due to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection-driven inflammation is the leading cause of acute cardiac injury associated with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, in-depth knowledge of the injury characteristics of the heart affected by inflammation is lacking. In this study, using a quantitative spatial proteomics strategy that combines comparative anatomy, laser-capture microdissection, and histological examination, we establish a region-resolved proteome map of the myocardia and microvessels with obvious inflammatory cells from hearts of patients with COVID-19. A series of molecular dysfunctions of myocardia and microvessels is observed in different cardiac regions. The myocardia and microvessels of the left atrial are the most susceptible to virus infection and inflammatory storm, suggesting more attention should be paid to the lesion and treatment of these two parts. These results can guide in improving clinical treatments for cardiovascular diseases associated with COVID-19.

Porous carbon materials are used widely in catalysis, electrochemistry, or as sorbents, but pore size control continues to be a challenge in their syntheses. Here the authors show that the 3D molecular structure of the carbon sources allows to control the pore size of the resulting carbon materials at the Ångstrom-level.

Maternal effects can reduce offspring susceptibility to predators by altering resource allocation to young and reproducing larger offspring. While the perception of predation risk can vary according to a prey’s life stage, it is unclear whether maternally experienced intraguild predation (IGP) risk during different life stages influences the maternal effects of predatory insects. We investigated the influence of exposure to intraguild predators (Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae)) during the larval and/or adult stages on reproductive decisions and offspring growth in Menochilus sexmaculatus (Fabricius). Independent of the life stage, when M. sexmaculatus females experienced IGP risk, their body weight and fecundity decreased, but the proportion of trophic eggs produced increased. However, egg mass, egg clutch number, and egg clutch size were not influenced by the treatment. Next, when offspring encountered H. axyridis, mothers experiencing IGP risk during the larval and/or adult stages could increase their offspring’s weight. Moreover, offspring in IGP environments reached a similar size as those with no-IGP environments when mothers experienced IGP risk during the larval and/or adult stages. Overall, M. sexmaculatus larval and/or adult exposure to IGP risk had no influence on egg size, but increased offspring body size when faced with H. axyridis. Additionally, mothers experiencing IGP risk during different life stages showed increased production of trophic eggs. Because IGP is frequently observed on M. sexmaculatus and favours relatively larger individuals, different stages of M. sexmaculatus express threat-sensitively to IGP risk; inducing maternal effects can be an adaptive survival strategy to defend against H. axyridis.

The corrosion behavior of alumina-forming austenitic (AFA) stainless steels with different Nb additions in a supercritical carbon dioxide environment at 500 °C, 600 °C, and 20 MPa was investigated. The steels with low Nb content were found to have a novel structure with a double oxide as an outer Cr2O3 oxide film and an inner Al2O3 oxide layer with discontinuous Fe-rich spinels on the outer surface and a transition layer consisting of Cr spinels and γ’-Ni3Al phases randomly distributed under the oxide layer. Oxidation resistance was improved by accelerating diffusion through refined grain boundaries after the addition of 0.6 wt.% Nb. However, the corrosion resistance decreased significantly at higher Nb content due to the formation of continuous thick outer Fe-rich nodules on the surface and an internal oxide zone, and Fe2(Mo, Nb) laves phases were also detected, which prevented the outward diffusion of Al ions and promoted the formation of cracks within the oxide layer, resulting in unfavorable effects on oxidation. After exposure at 500 °C, fewer spinels and thinner oxide scales were found. The specific mechanism was discussed.

The settlement behavior of composite foundations plays an important role in the serviceability and stability of the subgrade or other infrastructures supporting the foundation. However, in water-rich flood plains, due to the complexity of the soft soil properties, the settlement behavior has not been well understood. The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of various key factors on the settlement behavior of composite foundations with deep mixed piles supporting highway subgrade in water-rich flood plains. The investigated subgrade is in operation, and the vehicle load is taken into account. The G347AH Project is considered in this study. Several typical models for predicting composite foundation settlements are discussed. By performing three-dimensional finite difference analysis, a comparison is made between the settlement behavior of the natural foundation and the composite foundation with deep mixed piles. Based on the single factor sensitivity analysis and the multi-factor orthogonal experimental design, the effects of pile length, pile diameter, pile spacing, pile elasticity modulus, cushion elasticity modulus, and cushion thickness on the composite foundation settlement are captured. It is found that among these factors, the degree of influence of pile length is superior. The composite foundation settlements predicted by the models agree well with the field-monitoring data, with the error being about 8.42% and 6.38%, respectively, at two monitoring sections. The research conducted in this paper can effectively reduce the probability of various settlement-related disasters occurring on highway subgrades in water-rich flood plains. Moreover, the research has important theoretical guidance for design optimization in terms of settlement control of highway subgrades in soft soil areas.

Fe-20Cr-25Ni-Nb steel is an important material for developing highly compact and efficient nuclear power systems by using the supercritical CO2 Brayton cycle. The in-core materials should possess excellent oxidation resistance in a high-temperature CO2 environment. In this work, a new 20Cr-25Ni-Nb steel with a minor Mo addition was developed, and its oxidation behavior was investigated in a pure CO2 environment at 650 °C under 3.5 MPa. The experimental results show that the oxidation kinetics of the steels followed the parabolic law with the test time, and the oxidation process was controlled by diffusion. The 20Cr-25Ni-Nb steel showed better oxidation resistance after Mo addition, which was attributed to the synergistic effects of Nb and Mo during the oxide scale formation process. In a high-temperature environment, the volatilization of Mo promoted the outward diffusion of Nb, resulting in the formation of an Nb-rich layer at the oxide/metal interface, which slowed the outward diffusion of Fe for the formation of the outermost Fe-oxide layer. Although the volatile nature of Mo at high temperatures promoted the outward diffusion of Nb, the addition of Mo had no significant influence on the overall structure of the oxide scales, which consisted of an outer Cr-rich oxide layer and an inner spinel oxide layer.

Abstract Background Strongyllodes variegatus (Fairmaire) is a major insect pest of oilseed rape in China. Despite its economic importance, the contribution of its population genetics in the development of any suitable protection control strategy for the management of oilseed rape crops is poorly studied. It is a much urgent need to prevent its spread to the rest of the world. Results Using the sequences of mitochondrial DNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and cytochrome b (Cytb) as genetic markers, we analyzed the population genetic diversity and structure of 437 individuals collected from 15 S. variegatus populations located in different oilseed rape production areas in China. In addition, we estimated the demographic history using neutrality test and mismatch distribution analysis. The high level of genetic diversity was detected among the COI and Cytb sequences of S. variegatus. The population structure analyses strongly suggested three distinct genetic and geographical regions in China with limited gene flow. The Mantel test showed that the genetic distance was greatly influenced by the geographical distance. The demographic analyses showed that S. variegatus had experienced population fluctuation during the Pleistocene Epoch, which was likely to be related to the climatic changes. Conclusion Overall, these results demonstrate that the strong genetic structure of S. variegatus populations in China, which is attributed by the isolation through the geographical distance among populations, their weak flight capacity and subsequent adaptation to the regional ecological conditions.

Oriented object detection has recently attracted increasing attention for its importance in aerial image processing. Popular detection methods for oriented and densely packed objects usually utilize the rotation angle to reduce the overlap of bounding boxes over the horizontal line. However, those angle-based methods remain challenging due to the angular periodicity and regression inconsistent, which are uniformly summarized as regression uncertainty. Previous methods usually heal the regression uncertainty problem by adding complex limits on the loss function. In this paper, instead of expressing accurate oriented information by the rotation angle, we propose a novel projection-based method that employs six-parameter to describe rotated bounding box: two points position on the projected line(one center point and one chosen vertex), a projection ratio and a quadrant label, named as ProjBB. ProjBB is angle-free and has three main advantages: i) More accurate angle distance without periodicity; ii) Projection ratio which is aspect ratio sensitive; iii) Theoretical uniqueness guarantee. Extensive experiments on two large-scale public aerial image datasets(i.e. DOTA and HRSC2016) and the scene text dataset ICDAR2015 show the competitive results of our proposed approach.

The optical-phased array (OPA) has gained special interest in recent years as a high-speed and compact imaging device. While large-scale OPAs have been demonstrated in single-pixel imaging, the complexity of the driver circuit is becoming a crucial problem as the number of phase shifters increases. Here, we investigate the phase shift requirement of OPA for single-pixel imaging and demonstrate, for the first time, that full 2π phase shifts are not mandatory to generate a set of illumination patterns with a sufficient degree of randomness required to reconstruct the image. Using a silicon photonic OPA chip with 128 carrier-depletion-based phase shifters, we experimentally confirm this property by successfully retrieving an image under a maximum phase shift of only ∼1.5π without affecting the quality of the image. Consequently, the input voltage can be reduced significantly. Since the carrier-depletion phase shifters generally require high driving voltages, this finding paves the way to high-speed OPA-based imaging with a minimum device requirement.

Gut-associated microbes can influence insect health and fitness. Understanding the structure of bacterial communities provides valuable insights on how different species may be selected and their functional characteristics in their hosts. The neutral model is powerful in predicting the structure of microbial communities, but its application in insects remains rare. Here, we examined the contribution of neutral processes to the gut-associated bacterial communities in Helicoverpa armigera caterpillars collected from different maize varieties at four locations. The gut-associated bacteria can be assigned to 37 Phyla, 119 orders, and 515 genera, with each individual gut containing 17–75% of the OTUs and 19–79% of the genera in the pooled samples of each population. The distribution patterns of most (75.59–83.74%) bacterial taxa were in good agreement with the neutral expectations. Of the remaining OTUs, some were detected in more individual hosts than would be predicted by the neutral model (i.e., above-partition), and others were detected in fewer individual hosts than predicted by the neutral model (i.e., below-partition). The bacterial taxa in the above-partitions were potentially selected by the caterpillar hosts, while the bacteria in the below-partitions may be preferentially eliminated by the hosts. Moreover, the gut-associated microbiota seemed to vary between maize varieties and locations, so ecological parameters outside hosts can affect the bacterial communities. Therefore, the structure of gut microbiota in the H. armigera caterpillar was mainly determined by stochastic processes, and the bacteria in the above-partition warrant further investigation for their potential roles in the caterpillar host.

Summary: With the ever-increased greenhouse effect and energy crisis, developing novel photocatalysts to realize high-efficient solar-driven chemicals/fuel production is of great scientific and practical significance. Recently, single-atom photocatalysts (SAPs) are promising catalysts with maximized metal dispersion and tuneable coordination environments. SAPs exhibit boosted photocatalytic performance by enhancing optical response, facilitating charge carrier transfer behaviors or directly manipulating surface reaction processes. In this regard, this article systematically reviews the state-of-the-art progress in the development and application of SAPs, especially the mechanism and performance of SAPs on various reaction processes. Some future challenges and potential research directions over SAPs are outlined at the final stage.

The global pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus has underscored the need for rapid, simple, scalable, and high-throughput multiplex diagnostics in non-laboratory settings. Here we demonstrate a multiplex reverse-transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) coupled with a gold nanoparticle-based lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) capable of detecting up to three unique viral gene targets in 15 min. RT-LAMP primers associated with three separate gene targets from the SARS-CoV-2 virus (Orf1ab, Envelope, and Nucleocapsid) were added to a one-pot mix. A colorimetric change from red to yellow occurs in the presence of a positive sample. Positive samples are run through a LFIA to achieve specificity on a multiplex three-test line paper assay. Positive results are indicated by a characteristic crimson line. The device is almost fully automated and is deployable in any community setting with a power source.

BackgroundCentral venous pressure (CVP) monitoring is widely used in the intensive care unit (ICU). However, the formal utility of CVP measurement to altering patient outcomes among ICU patients with or at risk for acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) has never been investigated. Our study aimed to explore the association of CVP measurement with 28-day mortality specifically in that population.MethodsThis study was based on the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care IV (MIMIC-IV) database. Patients were divided into CVP and no CVP groups according to whether they had CVP measurement within 24 h of admission to the ICU. The primary outcome was 28-day mortality. Multivariate regression was used to elucidate the association between CVP measurement and 28-day mortality, and propensity score matching (PSM) and propensity score-based overlap weighting (OW) were employed to verify the stability of our results.ResultsA total of 10,198 patients with or at risk for ARDS were included in our study, of which 4,647 patients (45.6%) belonged to the CVP group. Multivariate logistic regression showed that the early measurement of CVP was independently associated with lower 28-day mortality (OR: 0.49; 95% CI: 0.42–0.57; p < 0.001). This association remained robust after PSM and OW (both p < 0.001). Patients in the CVP group had shorter ICU stay, lower in-hospital mortality, more fluid on day 1 and higher clearance of blood lactate than those in the no CVP group.ConclusionEarly CVP measurement is associated with an improvement in 28-day mortality among a general population of critically ill patients with or at risk for ARDS.

With the implementation of national marine strategy,economic activities such as maritime transport,marine resource exploitation become increasingly important,and the demand for maritime communications keeps growing.Although the terrestrial cellular network had entered the 5G era,existing maritime communications still mainly rely on marine satellites and shore-based base stations,which are far from meeting the demand in terms of communication rate,delay and reliability.The future 6G networks are expected to offer satellite-air-ground-sea full coverage.However,due to complex maritime environments and heterogeneous marine services,the 6G maritime communication networks still face unique challenges.After summarizing the current developing status of maritime communications,related key technologies were surveied from three aspects:transmission efficiency,network coverage,and information service.For the future development of 6G intelligent maritime communication networks,the technical methods and research directions of maritime environment-aware intelligent transmission,coordinated satellite-terrestrial dynamic networking and service-driven resource allocation were prospected.

Abstract Background For ventral hernia, endoscopic sublay repair (ESR) may overcome the disadvantages of open sublay and laparoscopic intraperitoneal onlay mesh repair. This retrospective study presents the preliminary multicenter results of ESR from China. The feasibility, safety, and effectiveness of ESR were evaluated; its surgical points and indications were summarized. Methods The study reviewed 156 ventral hernia patients planned to perform with ESR in ten hospitals between March 2016 and July 2019. Patient demographics, hernia characteristics, operative variables, and surgical results were recorded and analyzed. Results ESR was performed successfully in 153 patients, 135 with totally extraperitoneal sublay (TES) and 18 with transabdominal sublay (TAS). In 19 patients, TES was performed with the total visceral sac separation (TVS) technique, in which the space separation is carried out along the peritoneum, avoiding damage to the aponeurotic structure. Endoscopic transversus abdominis release (eTAR) was required in 17.0% of patients, and only 18.3% of patients required permanent mesh fixation. The median operative time was 135 min. Most patients had mild pain and resume eating soon after operation. No severe intraoperative complications occurred. Bleeding in the extraperitoneal space occurred in two patients and was stopped by nonsurgical treatment. Seroma and chronic pain were observed in 5.23 and 3.07% of patients. One recurrence occurred after TAS repair for an umbilical hernia. Conclusion ESR is feasible, safe, and effective for treating ventral hernias when surgeons get the relevant surgical skills, such as the technique of “partition breaking,” TVS, and eTAR. Small-to-medium ventral hernias are the major indications.
