We present a new catalog of Kepler planet candidates that prioritizes accuracy of planetary dispositions and properties over uniformity. This catalog contains 4376 transiting planet candidates, including 1791 residing within 709 multi-planet systems, and provides the best parameters available for a large sample of Kepler planet candidates. We also provide a second set of stellar and planetary properties for transiting candidates that are uniformly-derived for use in occurrence rates studies. Estimates of orbital periods have been improved, but as in previous catalogs, our tabulated values for period uncertainties do not fully account for transit timing variations (TTVs). We show that many planets are likely to have TTVs with long periodicities caused by various processes, including orbital precession, and that such TTVs imply that ephemerides of Kepler planets are not as accurate on multi-decadal timescales as predicted by the small formal errors (typically 1 part in $10^6$ and rarely $ > 10^{-5}$) in the planets' measured mean orbital periods during the Kepler epoch. Analysis of normalized transit durations implies that eccentricities of planets are anti-correlated with the number of companion transiting planets. Our primary catalog lists all known Kepler planet candidates that orbit and transit only one star; for completeness, we also provide an abbreviated listing of the properties of the two dozen non-transiting planets that have been identified around stars that host transiting planets discovered by Kepler., Comment: 62 pages, 32 figures, 5 tables. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) enables indirect detection of brain activity changes via the blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) signal. Conventional analysis methods mainly rely on the real-valued magnitude of these signals. In contrast, research suggests that analyzing both real and imaginary components of the complex-valued fMRI (cv-fMRI) signal provides a more holistic approach that can increase power to detect neuronal activation. We propose a fully Bayesian model for brain activity mapping with cv-fMRI data. Our model accommodates temporal and spatial dynamics. Additionally, we propose a computationally efficient sampling algorithm, which enhances processing speed through image partitioning. Our approach is shown to be computationally efficient via image partitioning and parallel computation while being competitive with state-of-the-art methods. We support these claims with both simulated numerical studies and an application to real cv-fMRI data obtained from a finger-tapping experiment.

A Gallium interstitial defect (Ga$_{\textrm{i}}$) is thought to be responsible for the spectacular spin-dependent recombination (SDR) in GaAs$_{1-x}$N$_x$ dilute nitride semiconductors. Current understanding associates this defect with two in-gap levels corresponding to the (+/0) and (++/+) charge-state transitions. Using a spin-sensitive photo-induced current transient spectroscopy, the in-gap electronic structure of a $x$ = 0.021 alloy is revealed. The (+/0) state lies $\approx$ 0.27 eV below the conduction band edge, and an anomalous, negative activation energy reveals the presence of not one but \textit{two} other states in the gap. The observations are consistent with a (++/+) state $\approx$ 0.19 eV above the valence band edge, and a hitherto ignored, (+++/++) state $\approx$ 25 meV above the valence band edge. The JWST Early Release Observations (ERO) included a NIRISS/SOSS (0.6-2.8$\,\mu$m) transit of the $\sim\,$850$\,$K Saturn-mass exoplanet HAT-P-18$\,$b. Initial analysis of these data reported detections of water, escaping helium, and haze. However, active K dwarfs like HAT-P-18 possess surface heterogeneities $-$ starspots and faculae $-$ that can complicate the interpretation of transmission spectra, and indeed, a spot-crossing event is present in HAT-P-18$\,$b's NIRISS/SOSS light curves. Here, we present an extensive reanalysis and interpretation of the JWST ERO transmission spectrum of HAT-P-18$\,$b, as well as HST/WFC3 and $\textit{Spitzer}$/IRAC transit observations. We detect H$_2$O (12.5$\,\sigma$), CO$_2$ (7.3$\,\sigma$), a cloud deck (7.4$\,\sigma$), and unocculted starspots (5.8$\,\sigma$), alongside hints of Na (2.7$\,\sigma$). We do not detect the previously reported CH$_4$ ($\log$ CH$_4$ $<$ -6 to 2$\,\sigma$). We obtain excellent agreement between three independent retrieval codes, which find a sub-solar H$_2$O abundance ($\log$ H$_2$O $\approx -4.4 \pm 0.3$). However, the inferred CO$_2$ abundance ($\log$ CO$_2$ $\approx -4.8 \pm 0.4$) is significantly super-solar and requires further investigation into its origin. We also introduce new stellar heterogeneity considerations by fitting for the active regions' surface gravities $-$ a proxy for the effects of magnetic pressure. Finally, we compare our JWST inferences to those from HST/WFC3 and $\textit{Spitzer}$/IRAC. Our results highlight the exceptional promise of simultaneous planetary atmosphere and stellar heterogeneity constraints in the era of JWST and demonstrate that JWST transmission spectra may warrant more complex treatments of the transit light source effect.

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the national systems of population movement around the world. Existing work has focused on countries of the Global North and restricted to the immediate effects of COVID-19 data during 2020. Data have represented a major limitation to monitor change in mobility patterns in countries in the Global South. Drawing on aggregate anonymised mobile phone location data from Meta-Facebook users, we aim to analyse the extent and persistence of changes in the levels (or intensity) and spatial patterns of internal population movement across the rural-urban continuum in Argentina, Chile and Mexico over a 26-month period from March 2020 to May 2022. We reveal an overall systematic decline in the level of short- and long-distance movement during the enactment of nonpharmaceutical interventions in 2020, with the largest reductions occurred in the most dense areas. We also show that these levels bounced back closer to pre-pandemic levels in 2022 following the relaxation of COVID-19 stringency measures. However, the intensity of these movements has remained below pre-pandemic levels in many areas in 2022. Additionally our findings lend some support to the idea of an urban exodus. They reveal a continuing negative net balances of short-distance movements in the most dense areas of capital cities in Argentina and Mexico, reflecting a pattern of suburbanisation. Chile displays limited changes in the net balance of short-distance movements but reports a net loss of long-distance movements. These losses were, however, temporary, moving to neutral and positive balances in 2021 and 2022., Comment: 29 pages, 5 figures

Observing a supernova explosion shortly after it occurs can reveal important information about the physics of stellar explosions and the nature of the progenitor stars of supernovae (SNe). When a star with a well-defined edge explodes in vacuum, the first photons to escape from its surface appear as a brief shock-breakout flare. The duration of this flare can extend to at most a few hours even for nonspherical breakouts from supergiant stars, after which the explosion ejecta should expand and cool. Alternatively, for stars exploding within a distribution of sufficiently dense optically thick circumstellar material, the first photons escape from the material beyond the stellar edge, and the duration of the initial flare can extend to several days, during which the escaping emission indicates photospheric heating. The difficulty in detecting SN explosions promptly after the event has so far limited data regarding supergiant stellar explosions mostly to serendipitous observations that, owing to the lack of ultraviolet (UV) data, were unable to determine whether the early emission is heating or cooling, and hence the nature of the early explosion event. Here, we report observations of SN 2023ixf in the nearby galaxy M101, covering the early days of the event. Using UV spectroscopy from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) as well as a comprehensive set of additional multiwavelength observations, we trace the photometric and spectroscopic evolution of the event and are able to temporally resolve the emergence and evolution of the SN emission.

Calculating the equilibrium properties of condensed matter systems is one of the promising applications of near-term quantum computing. Recently, hybrid quantum-classical time-series algorithms have been proposed to efficiently extract these properties from a measurement of the Loschmidt amplitude $\langle \psi| e^{-i \hat H t}|\psi \rangle$ from initial states $|\psi\rangle$ and a time evolution under the Hamiltonian $\hat H$ up to short times $t$. In this work, we study the operation of this algorithm on a present-day quantum computer. Specifically, we measure the Loschmidt amplitude for the Fermi-Hubbard model on a $16$-site ladder geometry (32 orbitals) on the Quantinuum H2-1 trapped-ion device. We assess the effect of noise on the Loschmidt amplitude and implement algorithm-specific error mitigation techniques. By using a thus-motivated error model, we numerically analyze the influence of noise on the full operation of the quantum-classical algorithm by measuring expectation values of local observables at finite energies. TRAPPIST-1 is a nearby system of seven Earth-sized, temperate, rocky exoplanets transiting a Jupiter-sized M8.5V star, ideally suited for in-depth atmospheric studies. Each TRAPPIST-1 planet has been observed in transmission both from space and from the ground, confidently rejecting cloud-free, hydrogen-rich atmospheres. Secondary eclipse observations of TRAPPIST-1 b with JWST/MIRI are consistent with little to no atmosphere given the lack of heat redistribution. Here we present the first transmission spectra of TRAPPIST-1 b obtained with JWST/NIRISS over two visits. The two transmission spectra show moderate to strong evidence of contamination from unocculted stellar heterogeneities, which dominates the signal in both visits. The transmission spectrum of the first visit is consistent with unocculted starspots and the second visit exhibits signatures of unocculted faculae. Fitting the stellar contamination and planetary atmosphere either sequentially or simultaneously, we confirm the absence of cloud-free hydrogen-rich atmospheres, but cannot assess the presence of secondary atmospheres. We find that the uncertainties associated with the lack of stellar model fidelity are one order of magnitude above the observation precision of 89 ppm (combining the two visits). Without affecting the conclusion regarding the atmosphere of TRAPPIST-1 b, this highlights an important caveat for future explorations, which calls for additional observations to characterize stellar heterogeneities empirically and/or theoretical works to improve model fidelity for such cool stars. This need is all the more justified as stellar contamination can affect the search for atmospheres around the outer, cooler TRAPPIST-1 planets for which transmission spectroscopy is currently the most efficient technique., Comment: 26 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

Given a monoidal triangulated category $T$ with noetherian spectrum, we show that there is an order preserving bijection between the collection of all Thomason subsets of the non-commutative spectrum $\mathrm{Spc}(T)$ and the collection of all thick two-sided semiprime ideals of $T$. This provides an alternative to the hypotheses of Nakano, Vashaw and Yakimov, as well as the recent approach via completely prime ideals of Mallick and Ray. By assuming the spectrum is noetherian, we show that it is indeed a spectral space, and that it is universal among all such spaces classifying the ideals in question., Comment: 15 pages

Neural network pruning is a highly effective technique aimed at reducing the computational and memory demands of large neural networks. In this research paper, we present a novel approach to pruning neural networks utilizing Bayesian inference, which can seamlessly integrate into the training procedure. Our proposed method leverages the posterior probabilities of the neural network prior to and following pruning, enabling the calculation of Bayes factors. The calculated Bayes factors guide the iterative pruning. Through comprehensive evaluations conducted on multiple benchmarks, we demonstrate that our method achieves desired levels of sparsity while maintaining competitive accuracy.
