- Abstract
Purpose: To report the results involving post-operative interventional radiotherapy (POIRT) in a homogenous cohort of patients affected by keloid and treated at a single institution with the same fractionation schedule. Patients and Methods: Inclusion criteria were: surgery with a histopathological diagnosis of keloid, subsequent high-dose rate interventional radiotherapy (HDR-IRT)—12 Gy in 4 fractions (3 Gy/fr) twice a day—and follow-up period ≥ 24 months. Results: One-hundred and two patients and a total of 135 keloids were eligible for the analyses. Median follow-up was 64 [IQR: 25–103] months. Thirty-six (26.7%) recurrences were observed, 12-months and 36-months cumulative incidence of recurrence were 20.7% (95% CI 12.2–28.5) and 23.8% (95% CI 14.9–31.7) respectively. History of spontaneous keloids (HR = 7.00, 95% CI 2.79–17.6, p < 0.001), spontaneous cheloid as keloid cause (HR = 6.97, 95% CI 2.05–23.7, p = 0.002) and sternal (HR = 10.6, 95% CI 3.08–36.8, p < 0.001), ear (HR = 6.03, 95% CI 1.71–21.3, p = 0.005) or limb (HR = 18.8, 95% CI 5.14–68.7, p < 0.001) keloid sites were significantly associated to a higher risk of recurrence. Conclusions: The findings support the use of surgery and POIRT as an effective strategy for controlling keloid relapses. Further studies should focus on determining the optimal Biologically Effective Dose and on establishing a scoring system for patient selection.

Background: Magneto- and Electro-encephalography record the electromagnetic field generated by neural currents with high temporal frequency and good spatial resolution, and are therefore well suited for source localization in the time and in the frequency domain. In particular, localization of the generators of neural oscillations is very important in the study of cognitive processes in the healthy and in the pathological brain. New method: We introduce the use of a Bayesian multi-dipole localization method in the frequency domain. Given the Fourier Transform of the data at one or multiple frequencies and/or trials, the algorithm approximates numerically the posterior distribution with Monte Carlo techniques. Results: We use synthetic data to show that the proposed method behaves well under a wide range of experimental conditions, including low signal-to-noise ratios and correlated sources. We use dipole clusters to mimic the effect of extended sources. In addition, we test the algorithm on real MEG data to confirm its feasibility. Comparison with existing method(s): Throughout the whole study, DICS (Dynamic Imaging of Coherent Sources) is used systematically as a benchmark. The two methods provide similar general pictures; the posterior distributions of the Bayesian approach contain much richer information at the price of a higher computational cost. Conclusions: The Bayesian method described in this paper represents a reliable approach for localization of multiple dipoles in the frequency domain.

Positronium in the $2^3S$ metastable state exhibits a low electrical polarizability and a long lifetime (1140 ns) making it a promising candidate for interferometry experiments with a neutral matter-antimatter system. In the present work, $2^3S$ positronium is produced - in absence of electric field - via spontaneous radiative decay from the $3^3P$ level populated with a 205nm UV laser pulse. Thanks to the short temporal length of the pulse, 1.5 ns full-width at half maximum, different velocity populations of a positronium cloud emitted from a nanochannelled positron/positronium converter were selected by delaying the excitation pulse with respect to the production instant. $ 2^3S $ positronium atoms with velocity tuned between $ 7 \cdot 10^4 $ m/s and $ 10 \cdot 10^4 $ m/s were thus produced. Depending on the selected velocity, a $2^3S$ production effciency ranging from $\sim 0.8 \%$ to $\sim 1.7%$, with respect to the total amount of emitted positronium, was obtained. The observed results give a branching ratio for the $3^3P$-$2^3S$ spontaneous decay of $(9.7 \pm 2.7) \% $. The present velocity selection technique could allow to produce an almost monochromatic beam of $\sim 1 \cdot 10^3 $ $2^3S$ atoms with a velocity spread $ < 10^4 $ m/s and an angular divergence of $\sim$ 50 mrad., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

Producing positronium (Ps) in the metastable $2^3\text{S}$ state is of interest for various applications in fundamental physics. We report here about an experiment in which Ps atoms are produced in this long-lived state by spontaneous radiative decay of Ps excited to the $3^3\text{P}$ level manifold. The Ps cloud excitation is obtained with a UV laser pulse in an experimental vacuum chamber in presence of guiding magnetic field of 25 mT and an average electric field of 300 V/cm. The indication of the $2^3\text{S}$ state production is obtained from a novel analysis technique of single-shot positronium annihilation lifetime spectra. Its production efficiency relative to the total amount of formed Ps is evaluated by fitting a simple rate equations model to the experimental data and found to be $ (2.1 \pm 1.3) \, \% $.

Abstract The energy deposited at very forward rapidities (very forward energy) is a powerful tool for characterising proton fragmentation in pp and p-Pb collisions. The correlation of very forward energy with particle production at midrapidity provides direct insights into the initial stages and the subsequent evolution of the collision. Furthermore, the correlation with the production of particles with large transverse momenta at midrapidity provides information complementary to the measurements of the underlying event, which are usually interpreted in the framework of models implementing centrality-dependent multiple parton interactions. Results about very forward energy, measured by the ALICE zero degree calorimeters (ZDCs), and its dependence on the activity measured at midrapidity in pp collisions at s $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV and in p-Pb collisions at s NN $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $$ = 8.16 TeV are discussed. The measurements performed in pp collisions are compared with the expectations of three hadronic interaction event generators: PYTHIA 6 (Perugia 2011 tune), PYTHIA 8 (Monash tune), and EPOS LHC. These results provide new constraints on the validity of models in describing the beam remnants at very forward rapidities, where perturbative QCD cannot be used.

Imagining, first, and then implementing an effective shift toward a new, green, and sustainable economic paradigm that safeguards the commons is required if humanity wants to survive and prosper. This commentary proposes a mission statement for a new transdisciplinary and long-run research endeavor to redefine homo economicus by letting him wear a new mask (the Latin meaning of persona). It also introduces a provocative definition of “Vegetable Economics,” a new economic paradigm that takes inspiration from plants to design economic institutions.

Abstract A measurement of inclusive, prompt, and non-prompt J/ψ production in p-Pb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy s NN $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $$ = 5.02 TeV is presented. The inclusive J/ψ mesons are reconstructed in the dielectron decay channel at midrapidity down to a transverse momentum p T = 0. The inclusive J/ψ nuclear modification factor R pPb is calculated by comparing the new results in p-Pb collisions to a recently measured proton-proton reference at the same centre-of-mass energy. Non-prompt J/ψ mesons, which originate from the decay of beauty hadrons, are separated from promptly produced J/ψ on a statistical basis for p T larger than 1.0 GeV/c. These results are based on the data sample collected by the ALICE detector during the 2016 LHC p-Pb run, corresponding to an integrated luminosity L $$ \mathcal{L} $$ int = 292 ± 11 μb −1, which is six times larger than the previous publications. The total uncertainty on the p T-integrated inclusive J/ψ and non-prompt J/ψ cross section are reduced by a factor 1.7 and 2.2, respectively. The measured cross sections and R pPb are compared with theoretical models that include various combinations of cold nuclear matter effects. From the non-prompt J/ψ production cross section, the b b ¯ $$ \mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}} $$ production cross section at midrapidity, d σ b b ¯ $$ {\mathrm{d}\sigma}_{\mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}}} $$ /dy, and the total cross section extrapolated over full phase space, σ b b ¯ $$ {\sigma}_{\mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}}} $$ , are derived.
