International audience; L'indice Biologique Diatomées (IBD) mis au point en 1996 (Lenoir & Coste) et normalisé en 2000 (AFNOR N.F. T90-354), conçu pour une utilisation en routine sur l'ensemble du réseau français, a montré un certain nombre de limitations dans son application qui ont été signalées par les concepteurs et les utilisateurs. Les principaux dysfonctionnements recensés sont liés : a) à l'hétérogénéité du jeu de données initial et à sa sous-représentation (1332 relevés) excluant des contextes biogéochimiques naturels ou altérés (pollutions toxiques), b) à la faible représentation des taxons pris en compte lors des calculs pour la mise en évidence des gradients d'anthropisation dans des contextes spécifiques (milieux acides ou estuariens), c) à l'inadéquation de certains appariements de taxons morphologiquement proches mais d'écologie très différente, d) à la prise en compte discutable de formes planctoniques ou peu structurantes dont les exigences ne sont pas encore bien délimitées. Mais la principale critique d'une méthode qui se voulait simple, réside sans doute dans les lacunes importantes concernant à la fois la caractérisation des milieux (notamment toxiques non pris en compte) et la description des biotypes (insuffisante assise en taxons) qui rendent son utilisation peu pertinente dans la définition du bon état écologique et le diagnostic de qualité des stations de référence Cette situation aggravée par des révisions incessantes de la taxinomie et l'apparition de taxons nouvellement décrits, rendait nécessaire et urgente cette tentative de révision non seulement de la liste des taxons à retenir, mais aussi celle de leurs distributions et des profils correspondants. La présente communication fait le point sur les modifications et améliorations apportées à l'outil pour résoudre les principaux points critiques signalés. Outre l'utilisation d'un jeu de données initial ayant gagné en représentativité, l'assise taxonomique a été augmentée et adaptée et les profils écologiques redéfinis en accordant un poids accru aux variables les plus liées au gradient d'anthropisation par rapport aux 14 paramètres initialement considérés. Avec un doublement du nombre de taxons pris en compte, l'outil rénové, parait moins influencé par les gradients naturels et devrait ainsi permettre de mieux répondre aux exigences de court terme de la DCE. Il reste à valider cette nouvelle version sur les nouveaux jeux recueillis par les utilisateurs qui auront à la tester et à la critiquer avant d'envisager une révision de la norme AFNOR.

International audience; Mapping coastal dune vegetation is critical to understand dune mobility and resilience in the context of climate change, sea level rise, and increased anthropogenic pressure. However, the identification of plant species from remotely sensed data is tedious and limited to broad vegetation communities, while such environments are dominated by fragmented and small-scale landscape patterns. In June 2019, a comprehensive multi-scale survey including unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), hyperspectral ground, and airborne data was conducted along approximately 20 km of a coastal dune system in southwest France. The objective was to generate an accurate mapping of the main sediment and plant species ground cover types in order to characterize the spatial distribution of coastal dune stability patterns. Field and UAV data were used to assess the quality of airborne data and generate a robust end-member spectral library. Next, a two-step classification approach, based on the normalized difference vegetation index and Random Forest classifier, was developed. Results show high performances with an overall accuracy of 100% and 92.5% for sand and vegetation ground cover types, respectively. Finally, a coastal dune stability index was computed across the entire study site. Different stability patterns were clearly identified along the coast, highlighting for the first time the high potential of this methodology to support coastal dune management.

A striking example is the response of coastal dunes along the Aquitaine Coast (SW France) to the 2013-2014 winter, which was the most energetic winter since at least the mid-20th century in most of the NE Atlantic. The aim of this study is to analyze the (partial) foredune recovery from the 2013-2014 winter at Truc Vert beach using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and through the coastal dune internal structure. Geophysical data was compared with semi-monthly DGPS topographic data of the beach, UAV-photogrammetry and Airborne LiDAR surveys of the coastal dune. Three main recovery phases were identified from the 2013-2014 winter: (i) aggradation of the upper-beach and dune front-crest during the post-storm summer; (ii) distinct phases of incipient dune-foot development with dune-crest stability during the following year, and (iii) since 2016, aggradation of both dune-foot and dune front-crest tending towards an equilibrium profile. This study shows that GPR surveys, combined with chronological topographic data, is an efficient tool to provide comprehensive understanding of the beach-dune system evolution at a decadal scale. This approach opens new perspectives to document foredune recovery timing and magnitude along sandy coasts.

In this chapter we explore what is required of us, as researchers and educators, to disentangle settled disciplinary knowledge and ways of knowing from colonial matrices of power, and to enable insurgent ways of learning, being, and acting in, with, and across disciplines. We posit three sensibilities that are critical to liberatory forms of disciplinary learning animated by onto-epistemic heterogeneity: multiplicity, horizontality, and dialogicality. Grounded in extended examples, we define these sensibilities, illustrate how they shift both the content and the terms of disciplinary ways of knowing in literacy, science, and mathematics, and articulate key implications for the design of learning and the practice of teaching.

International audience; 1. Mass effect, allowing species to persist in unfavorable habitats, and dispersal limitation, preventing species from reaching favorable habitats, are the two major dispersal processes. While dispersal limitation can be detected by experimental or modeling techniques, mass effect is more challenging to evaluate, which hampers our ability to disentangle the influence of the environment vs. dispersal on species distribution. This is undesirable for biomonitoring programs built on known species-environment relationships.2. We developed an innovative method for detection of species influenced by mass effect. We tested it on stream diatoms, a widely used taxonomic group for stream biomonitoring, from four French watersheds. This method combined (1) an appropriate spatial framework, the Asymmetric Eigenvector Map (AEM), used in species distribution modeling to measure the relative influence of dispersal vs. niche processes, (2) an analysis of negative co-occurrence patterns to separate mass effect from dispersal limitation, and (3) a measurement of niche breadths to distinguish between non-spatially structured generalists and species influenced by mass effect.3. We propose that species characterized by low negative co-occurrence values, a high correlation to spatial factors and average to low niche breadths are sensitive to mass effect.4. Synthesis and applications: We suggest that the sensitivity of species towards mass effect should represent a new ecological trait to be considered for fundamental and applied issues concerning ecology and water quality assessment. Almost all of the species identified here as influenced by mass effect are contributing to the calculation of different diatom-based indices (e.g., Biological Diatom Index or Specific Pollution-sensitivity Index) and should be treated with caution when assigning ecological status classes to water bodies.

International audience; Microalgae play a key role in ecosystems and are widely used in ecological status assessment. Research focusing on such organisms is then well developed and essential. Anyway, approaches for a better comprehension of their metabolome's response towards anthropogenic stressors are only emerging. This review presents the biochemical responses of various microalgae species towards several contaminants including metals and chemicals as pesticides or industrial compounds. We aim to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of analytical approaches deciphering anthropogenic contaminants impact on microalgae metabolome dynamics, in order to bring out relevant biochemical markers that could be used for risk assessment. Studies to date on ecotoxicological metabolomics on microalgae are highly heterogeneous in both analytical techniques and resulting metabolite identification. There is a real need for studies using complementary approaches to determine biomarkers usable for ecological risk assessment.

International audience; This paper describes a large-scale experiment designed to examine if reinstating natural processes in the coastal dune systems of Southwest France can be a relevant nature-based adaptation in chronically eroding sectors and a nature-based solution against coastal hazards, by maintaining the coastal dune ecological corridor. An experiment started in late 2017 on a 4-km-long stretch of coast at Truc Vert, where experimental notches were excavated and intensively monitored in the incipient and established foredunes. Preliminary results indicate that most of the excavated notches did not develop into blowout. Only the larger elongated notches subsequently excavated in the established foredune in 2018 showed evidence of development, acting as an effective conduit for aeolian landward transport into the dunes. All notches were found to have a statistically significant impact on vegetation dynamics downwind, even those that did not develop. The area of bare sand landward and within the elongated notches notably increased implying a loss of vegetation cover during this first stage of development. Observations of a nearby coastal dune system that has been in free evolution over the last 40 years also indicate that, although the dune migrated inland by more than 100 m, it is now mostly made of bare sand. Further work is required to explore if and how dunes maintained as dynamic systems can become an efficient nature-based solution along this eroding coastline.

International audience; Niche conservatism (NC) describes the scenario in which species retain similar characteristics or traits over time and space, and thus has potentially important implications for understanding their biogeographic distributions. Evidence consistent with NC includes similar niche properties across geographically distant regions. We investigated whether NC was evident in stream diatom morphospecies by modeling species responses to environmental and climatic variables in a set of calibration sites (from the US) and then evaluated the models with test sets (from France, Finland, New Zealand, Antilles and La Réunion). We also examined whether diatom species showed congruency in environmental niche optima and niche breadths between the study regions, and whether species occupancy and functional traits influenced the observed patterns. We used boosted regression tree models with local environmental variables and climatic variables as predictors. We detected low NC in both environmental and climate models and a lack of consistent differences in NC between widely distributed and regionally rare species and among functional groups. For all species, diatom environmental and climatic optima varied clearly between the regions but showed some positive relationships especially for pH and total phosphorus. Diatom niche breadths were only weakly correlated between the US and the other regions. We demonstrated that diatoms showed overall relatively little NC globally, and NC was especially low for climatic variables. Collectively, these findings suggest that there may exist locally adapted lineages within the diatom morphospecies or diatoms possess some adaptation potential for differences in temperature. We argue that in diatoms, environmental and especially climate models may not be transferrable in space globally but need regional diatom data for calibration because species niches seem to differ among geographical regions.

1. Understanding the mechanisms that drive beta diversity (i.e. beta-diversity), an important aspect of regional biodiversity, remains a priority for ecological research. beta-diversity and its components can provide insights into the processes generating regional biodiversity patterns. We tested whether environmental filtering or dispersal related processes predominated along the stream watercourse by analysing the responses of taxonomic and functional diatom beta-diversity to environmental and spatial factors. 2. We examined the variation in total beta-diversity and its components (turnover and nestedness) in benthic diatom species and ecological guilds (motile, planktonic, low-and high profile) with respect to watercourse position (up-, mid-and downstream) in 2,182 sites throughout France. We tested the effects of pure environmental and pure spatial factors on beta-diversity with partial Mantel tests. Environmental factors included eight physicochemical variables, while geographical distances between sites were used as spatial factors. We also correlated a and c-diversity, and the degree of nestedness (NODF metric) with environmental variables. 3. Total beta-diversity and its turnover component displayed higher values upstream than mid-and downstream. The nestedness component exhibited low values, even when NODF values increased from up-to downstream. Pure environmental factors were highly significant for explaining total beta-diversity and turnover regardless of watercourse position, but pure spatial factors were mostly significant mid-and downstream, with geographical distance being positively correlated with beta-diversity. Across sites, nutrient enrichment decreased turnover but increased the degree of nestedness. Motile and low profile diatoms comprised the most abundant guilds, but their beta-diversity patterns varied in an opposite way. The lowest guild beta-diversity was observed upstream for low profile species, and downstream for motile species. 4. In conclusion, environmental filtering seemed to play a major role in structuring metacommunities irrespective of site watercourse position. Filtering promoted strong turnover patterns, especially in disconnected upstream sites. The greater role of spatial factors mid-and downstream was consistent with mass effects rather than neutral processes because these sites had lower total beta-diversity than upstream sites. Motile species were most strongly affected by mass effects processes, whereas low profile species were primarily influenced by environmental conditions. Collectively, these findings suggest that partitioning of total beta-diversity into its components and the use of diatom ecological guilds provide a useful framework for assessing the mechanisms underlying metacommunity patterns along the stream watercourse.

National audience; Cette réunion avait pour premier objectif de présenter un nouveau référentiel autoécologique des diatomées des cours d'eau de France métropolitaine, élaboré dans le cadre d'une fiche-action AFB-Irstea (Programme 2016-2018, Fiche N° 23). Le référentiel antérieurement utilisé pour certaines applications nationales, élaboré en 1994 par van Dam sur la base de listes d'espèces rencontrées aux Pays-Bas et faisant largement appel à des données écologiques bibliographiques, ainsi qu'à de l'expertise, présentait un décalage biogéographique assez conséquent par rapport à la liste de diatomées trouvées dans les cours d'eau Français. Ce nouveau référentiel a été calculé à partir de la mise en relation de données abiotiques et des relevés diatomiques collectés dans le cadre des réseaux de surveillance de France. Ce référentiel permet désormais de mieux caractériser les préférences autoécologiques de 809 espèces suffisamment rencontrées dans nos cours d'eau nationaux. Le second objectif de cette réunion a été de présenter des résultats d'étape d'une démarche actuellement en cours, qui vise à mettre au point de nouvelles métriques de diagnostic permettant l'évaluation judicieuse d'altérations liées à des apports anthropiques provoquant une charge accrue des cours d'eau en nutriments. Ces nouvelles métriques visent à diagnostiquer le plus spécifiquement possible les conséquences d'altérations liées à de la matière organique, ou au phosphore, ou aux formes de l'azote. Dans ce dernier cadre, le gradient de NO3 a fait l'objet d'un travail particulier : mal pris en compte dans le cadre de l'IBD actuel, ce nutriment souvent en excès dans nos cours d'eau peut conduire à des dysfonctionnements écologiques, en particulier en zones littorales, et il est important d'en diagnostiquer les effets de manière plus précoce et sensible. Pour chaque catégorie de nutriment, 3 types de métriques basées sur des philosophies de construction différentes ont conduit à des résultats intéressants. La suite de la démarche, actuellement en pause faute de moyens dédiés, consistera à agréger leurs résultats afin de conduire à un outil permettant un diagnostic à la fois plus spécifique, plus sensible et plus robuste de ces types d'altérations.

International audience; La mise en place de la Directive Cadre sur l'Eau a initié le développement d'indicateurs d'état écologique des plans d'eau, dont l'indice phytoplancton lacustre (IPLAC) et l'indice biologique macrophytique en lac (IBML). Cette Directive prévoyait également le développement d'un indicateur basé conjointement sur les macrophytes et le phytobenthos. La France, ne disposant pas à l'époque d'un tel indice, avait comme la majorité des autres états membres participé au premier round d'intercalibration avec un indice historiquement dédié aux cours d'eau (IBD). Depuis, la majorité des pays européens ont développé de nouvelles méthodes, mais prenant en compte de façon distincte phytobenthos et macrophytes, et considérant de plus les diatomées comme un proxy du phytobenthos. Il s'agit donc aujourd'hui de développer un indice diatomique dédié aux milieux lacustres. Pour ce faire, une campagne exceptionnelle d'acquisition des données s'est déroulée entre 2015 et 2017 sur l'ensemble du territoire métropolitain avec l'aide des Agences de l'Eau et des DREAL. Cette communication après un point sur les données reçues et exploitables, a pour objectif principal de présenter les travaux de développement d'un indice dédié à l'évaluation de l'état écologique des plans d'eau à l'échelle du territoire national. Il est important de souligner les limites de l'indice proposé, assis sur un jeu de données trop limité, appelant à une révision lorsque davantage de données seront disponibles.

National audience; Cette réunion avait pour but : 1) de faire connaissance avec le nouvel interlocuteur AFB en charge des actions contractuelles de l'Equipe ECOVEA dans le cadre des conventionnements AFB-Irstea, 2) de balayer l'avancement des actions contractuelles en cours et 3) d'échanger sur les priorités futures et sur les intention de proposition Irstea pour les actions devant s'inscrire au titre de l'année 2020. La présente communication vise à faire un bilan rapide des actions réalisées sur le compartiment diatomique des cours d'eau ces dernières années dans l'optique de la mise en oeuvre de la DCE dans les DOM, et de leur état d'avancement. La mise au point de nouvelles méthodes indicielles est achevée pour la Réunion (IDR), les Antilles (IDA), la Nouvelle-Calédonie (IDNC) et la Guyane (IDGF), le transfert de ces 2 dernières méthodes restant à finaliser pendant les années 2019 et 2020. En 2ème partie d'exposé, il est présenté la problématique actuelle de décalage biogéographique rencontrée dans l'application de l'IDA aux Antilles. Il est donc envisagé une action de mise au point ou adaptation d'une nouvelle version de l'indice diatomique Antilles (Vers l'IDA-2) destinée à résoudre le problème rencontré, qui a fait l'objet du dépôt d'un pré- projet de fiche-action 2020-2021.

In this paper, coastal dune data are collected at Truc Vert, SW France, using photogrammetry via Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). A low-cost GoPro-equipped DJI Phantom 2 quadcopter and a 20 MPix camera-equipped DJI Phantom 4 Pro quadcopter UAVs were used to remotely sense the coastal dune morphology over large spatial scales (4 km alongshore, i.e., approximately 1 km2 of beach-dune system), within a short time (less than 2 h of flight). The primary objective of this paper is to propose a low-cost and replicable approach which, combined with simple and efficient permanent Ground Control Point (GCP) set-up, can be applied to routinely survey upper beach and coastal dune morphological changes at high frequency (after each storm) and high resolution (0.1 m). Results show that a high-resolution and accurate Digital Surface Model (DSM) can be inferred with both UAVs if enough permanent GCPs are implemented. The more recent DJI Phantom 4 gives substantially more accurate DSM with a root-mean-square vertical error and bias of 0.05 m and &minus, 0.03 m, respectively, while the DSM inferred from the DJI Phantom 2 still largely meets the standard for coastal monitoring. The automatic flight plan procedure allows replicable surveys to address large-scale morphological evolution at high temporal resolution (e.g., weeks, months), providing unprecedented insight into the coastal dune evolution driven by marine and aeolian processes. The detailed morphological evolution of a 4-km section of beach-dune system is analyzed over a 6-month winter period, showing highly alongshore variable beach and incipient foredune wave-driven erosion, together with wind-driven inland migration of the established foredune by a few meters, and alongshore-variable sand deposition on the grey dune. In a context of widespread erosion, this photogrammetry approach via low-cost flexible and lightweight UAVs is well adapted for coastal research groups and coastal dune management stakeholders, including in developing countries where data are lacking.

Disturbance events such as floods and droughts are postulated to shape life history traits that support resilience, but river management and conservation would benefit from greater understanding of the emergent effects in communities of river organisms. We unify current knowledge of taxonomic‐, phylogenetic‐, and trait‐based aspects of river communities that might aid the identification and quantification of resilience mechanisms. Temporal variations in river productivity, physical connectivity, and environmental heterogeneity resulting from floods and droughts are highlighted as key characteristics that promote resilience in these dynamic ecosystems. Three community‐wide mechanisms that underlie resilience are (a) partitioning (competition/facilitation) of dynamically varying resources, (b) dispersal, recolonization, and recruitment promoted by connectivity, and (c) functional redundancy in communities promoted by resource heterogeneity and refugia. Along with taxonomic and phylogenetic identity, biological traits related to feeding specialization, dispersal ability, and habitat specialization mediate organism responses to disturbance. Measures of these factors might also enable assessment of the relative contributions of different mechanisms to community resilience. Interactions between abiotic drivers and biotic aspects of resource use, dispersal, and persistence have clear implications for river conservation and management. To support these management needs, we propose a set of taxonomic, phylogenetic, and life‐history trait metrics that might be used to measure resilience mechanisms. By identifying such indicators, our proposed framework can enable targeted management strategies to adapt river ecosystems to global change.

International audience; L'IBD2007 est actuellement utilisé en routine dans les réseaux de surveillance Français, où il permet une évaluation intégrée d'état diatomique en application de la DCE. Or, 7 paramètres abiotiques différents ayant été intégrés dans le gradient composite d'altération qui a servi à caler la réponse de cet indice, il est difficile d'affecter la part d'impact anthropique réellement occasionnée par chacun d'entre d'eux sur la communauté en place. En vue de résoudre ce problème, une voie a priori intéressante passe par une redéfinition des caractéristiques autoécologiques des diatomées Françaises vis-à-vis de chaque paramètre individuel d'altération, en s'inspirant du référentiel publié en 1994 par van Dam et al sur les taxons trouvées aux Pays-Bas (basé à l'époque sur les informations bibliographiques disponibles et du jugement-expert). Cette référence conceptuellement intéressante et souvent citée a encore fait l'objet d'une utilisation nationale très récente ; ceci, malgré que la littérature ait solidement établi que les caractéristiques autoécologiques décrites pour un taxon donné sont soumises à d'importantes variations à la fois spatiales (biogéographiques) et temporelles, Or un décalage a souvent pu être observé entre nos 2 zones géographiques, tant au niveau des conditions abiotiques que pour l'autoécologie de taxons communs (au-delà du volant assez important d'espèces spécifiques de l'une ou de l'autre), et ce fait s'est à nouveau confirmé lors d'une récente étude relative à l'évaluation des TGCE de France. Il a donc été réalisé une analyse permettant, à partir de nos données abiotiques et biologiques nationales, de redéfinir les attributs autoécologiques (optimum, tolérance) de 821 taxons de France en réponse à 8 paramètres physico-chimiques. Les attributs de chaque taxon ont été déterminés par une approche utilisant les moyennes pondérées (weighted averaging regression), et les limites internes des classes adoptées pour chaque gradient autoécologique (cf. référentiel de Van Dam) ont été établies à partir d'agrégations et d'arbres de régressions. S'appuyant sur les résultats de ce travail et sur l'autoécologie des espèces ainsi redéfinie, divers principes de métriques ont enfin été testées pour rendre compte au mieux des effets des gradients abiotiques considérés (certaines mono-paramètriques, d'autres représentatives de pressions un peu plus composites et intégratives). Les principaux résultats de cette étude soutenue par l'AFB seront ici présentés.

International audience; The Water Framework Directive (WFD) requires a level of "confidence" and "precision" in the established freshwater monitoring system, as several sources of variability can contribute significantly to the mis-classification of water body ecological status. Diatoms and macrophytes are required by the Directive as biological quality element (BQE) and are routinely used in France to monitor the health of rivers. The present study evaluated uncertainties related to the application of the data acquisition protocol for the two vegetation-based assessment methods in France (Biological Diatoms index, IBD 2007 and Biological River Macrophyte index, IBMR). We aimed to estimate the overall impact of inter-operator variability on IBD 2007 and IBMR results, and on river ecological status classification, at the French national scale. A systemic approach was designed and sampling surveys were conducted at the same sites by three different operators belonging to different French bodies involved in monitoring. Results showed significant inter-operator variability regarding the species lists obtained, but also in terms of richness and abundance metrics. However, statistical analyses did not reveal any significant difference in the distribution of IBD 2007 and IBMR scores between the three operators, among all sites considered together. The mean deviation at a site was ± 0.85 for the diatom index (differences ranged between 0 and 6.6 IBD 2007 points) and ± 0.57 for the macrophyte index (the effective range was 0 and 3 IBMR points). In general, inter-operator variability was higher for moderate and poor ecological status classes. The distribution of such variability observed along the entire quality gradient of our data set, for both diatoms and macrophytes, was used to fit a model able to define the probability for a site to belong to a given status class according to its index score. Identifying and quantifying the key factors that contribute to the potential misclassification of the ecological status finally allowed us to propose future recommendations in order to minimise the main sources of error.

This work is in line with the development of a multi-metric index for the assessment of the ecological status of water bodies with respect to the phytoplankton compartment in water. Thus, it is linked to the IPLAC index. In the end, it aims to complete its evaluation with so-called diagnostic metrics to account for other pressures and elements of biodiversity. For this we used a large-scale morpho-functional approach (national territory) of phytoplankton communities, based on the definition and use of 84 morpho-functional traits of phytoplankton, covering all taxonomic groups, as a descriptor of communities. In aquatic ecosystems, relationships and interactions between phytoplankton communities and environmental variables are often quite complex. So, different statistical and numerical tools such as Random Forest (RF) in regression and classification mode, Partial Dependent Plots (PDPs) have been tested to take into account this complexity. RF methods have shown that depth of waterbody and altitude are important factors. This led to the creation, by the K-means method, of four typological groups, based on these criteria, to subtract the effect. Subsequently, various tests of direct correlations, on each of the typological groups, were carried out but results are rather disappointing. In a second step, RF models in regression mode then classification mode were used. However, their uses drive us away from the DCE compatibility because they have not allowed us to derive relationships and metrics relating to a trait or combination of exploitable traits. Lastly, an approach using PDPs has been implemented. Of the 84 constructed traits, 21 are highlighted by the result analyses with direct or indirect links to physico-chemical water parameters. These include traits: life form (solitary, filamentous), motility, presence of protuberances, pseudo-vacuoles or the presence of Chlorophyceae or Euglenophyceae. The dissolved organic carbon, the total suspended solids, the nitrates or the transparency measured by Secchi disk are the physicochemical parameters that have relations with morpho-functional traits. The use of PDPs allows knowing the variation direction of the existing relationship between the trait and the physicochemical parameters. On the other hand, threshold values do not depend on the created typological groups. This work should allow the definition of new trait-based diagnostic metrics for DOC and nitrate gradients. This will refine the understanding of the impact of anthropogenic pressures on lake ecosystems.; Le présent travail s'insère dans la continuité des développements d'un indice multi-métrique pour l'évaluation de l'état écologique des plans d'eau en ce qui concerne le compartiment phytoplancton en plan d'eau. Il est ainsi en lien avec l'indice IPLAC. Il vise à terme à compléter son évaluation par des métriques dites de diagnostic permettant de rendre compte d'autres pressions et des éléments de biodiversité. Pour cela nous avons employé une approche morpho-fonctionnelle à large échelle (territoire national) des communautés phytoplanctoniques, basée sur la définition et l'utilisation de 84 traits morpho-fonctionnels du phytoplancton, couvrant l'ensemble des groupes taxonomiques, comme descripteur des communautés. Dans les écosystèmes aquatiques, les relations et interactions entre les communautés phytoplanctoniques et les variables environnementales étant souvent assez complexes, différents outils statistiques et numériques tel que le Random Forest (RF) en mode régression et classification, les partial Dependent Plots (PDP) ont été testés pour appréhender cette complexité. Les méthodes de RF ont montré que la profondeur du plan d'eau et l'altitude étaient des facteurs importants. Cela a conduit à la création, par la méthode des K-means, de quatre groupes typologiques, fonction de ces critères, pour en soustraire l'effet. Par la suite, divers tests de corrélations directes, sur chacun des groupes typologiques, ont été exécutés mais il en ressort des résultats plutôt décevants. Ce travail devrait permettre la définition de nouvelles métriques de diagnostic basées sur certains traits pour les gradients de COD et de nitrates. Cela permettra d'affiner la compréhension de l'impact des pressions anthropiques sur les écosystèmes lacustres.

In lake ecosystems, biological taxa are usually studied either through trophic relationships (without considering environmental factors) or distinctly for each taxonomical group. In the last case, studying the response of communities to environmental abiotic factors is usually the main objective and biotic interactions are therefore rarely considered. This is the objective of the present study which aims to investigate, synchronously, the response of different biological taxa in the Lacanau's lake (South-West of France) to abiotic and biotic factors. More precisely, the effect of season, spatial variation, physico-chemical parameters and physical factors (e.g. wind, slope) on macrophytes, phytoplankton, epiphytic diatoms and micro-meiofauna communities and biomass will be tested. The aim is also to construct global models of the ecosystem to determine the relative effect of environmental factors and biotic relationships. At the same time, another goal is to investigate, for the first time, epiphytic micro-meiofauna taxa living in Lacanau's lake. We thus studied 6 stations located around the littoral shoreline that were sampled during the four temperate seasons. Permanent plots (24 per station) were installed to study macrophyte composition and phytoplankton biomass. Water samples were taken (3 per station) and water composition was analyzed through more than 20 parameters. Five macrophytes species were also sampled in each station to measure the composition and biomass of the epiphytic flora and fauna. Results revealed a strong seasonal variation of water composition. Taxa did not exhibit a synchronic response through time and, within taxa group, we often evidenced different variation of diversity and biomass with time. Microscopic organisms appeared to be strongly dependent of seasonal variation but it was almost impossible to separate the influence of physico-chemical parameters from those of seasonal succession. Weak influence of physico-chemical parameters on macrophytes communities was found (except for biomass) but these communities strongly depends on hydrodynamical and hydromorphological conditions. Physical factors also appeared to strongly impact phytoplankton diversity and biomass. Nature and architecture of plant host was found to greatly influence the biomass and diversity of diatoms and micro-meiofauna epiphytic communities. Considering biotic relationships, competition processes with macrophytes species seems to structure phytoplankton communities and the micro-meiofauna biomass and diversity appeared to be controlled by epiphytic diatoms. All these processes were correctly modeled in final models which allowed to test the relative influence of chemical, physical and biological factors. This fundamental study bring better knowledge on processes patterning biological communities in the Lacanau's lake and also contribute to a better understanding of the whole functioning of this lacustrine ecosystem. Some scientific and management perspectives were drawn from these results, but supplementary studies are still needed to better understand mechanisms patterning these biological communities.; Dans les écosystèmes lacustres, les différents maillons biologiques sont souvent étudiés via le réseau trophique de l'écosystème ou alors de manière complètement indépendante. La réponse des communautés aux différents facteurs abiotiques est alors le principal objectif de ces études mais les interactions biotiques sont très rarement considérés dans l'analyse des assemblages d'espèces. C'est l'objectif de cette étude qui vise à étudier de manière synchrone différents taxons biologiques au sein du lac de Lacanau. Plus précisément, l'influence de la saison, de la variabilité spatiale, de la physico-chimie de l'eau et des facteurs physiques (e.g. vent, pente) sera testé sur les communautés de macrophytes, de phytoplancton, de diatomées épiphytes et sur la micro-méiofaune épiphyte. L'objectif est également de construire des modèles d'interaction entre ces différentes communautés biologiques et les paramètres environnementaux mesurés. Parallèlement, un autre objectif est aussi de dresser pour la première fois la liste des taxons de la micro-méiofaune présent dans le lac de Lacanau. Nous avons pour ceci étudié 6 stations réparties autour du lac de Lacanau que nous avons échantillonnées pendant les 4 saisons. Des quadrats fixes (24 par stations) ont été placés pour quantifier la composition en macrophytes et la biomasse phytoplanctonique. Des prélèvements d'eaux (3 par stations) ont également été prélevés sur chaque station pour mesurer la composition de plus de 20 paramètres physico-chimiques. Cinq espèces de macrophytes ont également été prélevées sur chaque station afin de quantifier la composition et la biomasse de la flore et de la faune épiphyte. Les résultats ont montré une forte variation saisonnière de la composition physico-chimique de l'eau. Les différents taxons ne montrent pas une réponse synchrone au cours du temps, et au sein de chaque groupe taxonomique, la réponse de la diversité et de la biomasse est elle aussi rarement similaire au cours du temps. Les organismes microscopiques se révèlent être fortement dépendant des variations saisonnières mais il est difficile déconvoluer la part lié aux paramètres physico-chimiques de celle lié à la successions saisonnière. Les macrophytes apparaissent en revanche être peu influencés par les paramètres physico-chimiques/saison (à l'exception de leur biomasse) mais dépendent surtout des conditions hydrodynamiques et hydromorphologiques. Les facteurs physiques se révèlent également être particulièrement structurants pour la diversité et la biomasse phytoplanctonique. La nature et l'architecture de la plante hôte semble aussi jouer un rôle majeur sur la diversité et la biomasse de la faune et de la flore épiphyte. Des processus de compétition avec les macrophytes semblent structurer la communauté phytoplanctonique et la micro-méiofaune apparait être particulièrement dépendante des fluctuations de la micro-flore épiphyte. L'ensemble de ces processus semblent correctement modélisés dans les modèles globaux qui permettent de synthétiser et de mieux tester l'influence relative des facteurs chimiques saisonniers, physiques et biologiques. Cette étude, essentiellement fondamentale, apporte des connaissances nouvelles sur le fonctionnement des communautés biologiques au sein du lac de Lacanau et permet de mieux comprendre son fonctionnement et son organisation. Elle offre cependant quelques perspectives de gestion mais nécessite aussi des études complémentaires pour mieux comprendre les principaux mécanismes structurant les communautés biologiques.

International audience; To quantify the relative contributions of local community assembly processes versus γ‐diversity to β‐diversity, and to assess how spatial scale and anthropogenic disturbance (i.e. nutrient enrichment) interact to dictate which driver dominates. Location: France and the United States. Time period: 1993 - 2011. Major taxa studied: Freshwater stream diatoms. Methods: β‐ diversity along a nutrient enrichment gradient was examined across multiple spatial scales. β‐ diversity was estimated using multi‐site Sørensen dissimilarity. We assessed the relative importance of specialists versus generalists using Friedley coefficient, and the contribution of local community assembly versus γ‐ diversity to β‐ diversity across spatial scales, with a null model. Finally, we estimated the response of β‐ diversity to environmental and spatial factors by testing the correlations between community, environmental and geographical distance matrices with partial Mantel tests. Results: β‐ diversity generally increased with spatial scale but the rate of increase depended on nutrient enrichment level. β‐diversity decreased significantly with increasing nutrient enrichment level due to the loss of specialist species. Local assembly was an important driver of β‐ diversity especially under low nutrient enrichment. Significant partial Mantel correlations were observed between diatom β‐ diversity and pure environmental distances under these conditions, highlighting the role of species sorting in local assembly processes. Conversely, in heavily enriched sites, only spatial distances were significantly correlated with β‐ diversity, which indicated a substantial role of dispersal processes. Main conclusions: Nutrient concentration mediated the expected increase in β‐diversity with spatial scales. Across spatial scales, β‐ diversity was more influenced by local assembly processes rather than by γ‐diversity. Nutrient enrichment was associated with an overall decline in diatom β‐ diversity and a shift in assembly processes from species sorting to dispersal, notably due to the elimination of some specialists and their subsequent replacement by generalists.

We explored: (a) stream β‐diversity responses to land cover (forest versus agriculture) in terms of physico‐chemistry and physicochemical heterogeneity; (b) whether these responses were constrained by the regional species pool, i.e. γ diversity, or local assembly processes through local (α) diversity; (c) whether local assembly operated through the regional species abundance distribution (SAD) or intraspecific spatial aggregation; and (d) the dependence on body size, dispersal capacity and trophic level (producer versus consumer).

International audience; Freshwater ecosystems are presently under a range of increasing pressures, some of which being directly due to anthropogenic activities such as agricultural practices or urban activities. Biofilms are communities of microorganisms (bacteria, algae, protozoa, fungi) and meiofaune integrated in an extracellular polysaccharide matrix fixed on immersed substrates. At the base of the trophic chain, biofilms play a key role in aquatic ecosystems. Due to their capacity to rapidly react to contamination, they are seen as efficient bioindicators and are increasingly used for water quality evaluation. Diatoms in particular dominate the algal biomass of biofilms and are routinely used in ecotoxicology to assess the impact of contaminations on freshwater ecosystems. Traditional ecotoxicology approaches rely on quantitative concentration response relationships highlighted on a batch of biological endpoints such as mortality, reproduction, growth and development, but all those approaches are materially and time expensive. We believe that metabolomics can enhance our knowledge of contaminant mode of actions, resulting in the identification of stress induced biomarkers. The present study aims to highlight metabolome changes in the freshwater diatom Nitzchia palea exposed to an herbicide, the diuron (0.3 µg/L and 3 µg/L), during 4 hours. An extraction protocol as well as a non-targeted metabolomic approach using high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-TOF-MS) was developed in order to decipher the impact of contamination on a metabolic level. Ongoing works will be dedicated to optimize both extraction and analysis methods to determine relevant biomarkers for risk assessment.

La mise en place de la Directive Cadre sur l'Eau a initié le développement d'indicateurs d'état écologique des plans d'eau, dont l'indice phytoplancton lacustre (IPLAC) et l'indice biologique macrophytique en lac (IBML). Cette Directive prévoyait également le développement d'un indicateur basé conjointement sur les macrophytes et le phytobenthos. La France, ne disposant pas à l'époque d'un tel indice, avait comme la majorité des autres états membres participé au premier round d'intercalibration avec un indice historiquement dédié aux cours d'eau (IBD). Depuis, la majorité des pays européens ont développé de nouvelles méthodes, mais prenant en compte de façon distincte phytobenthos et macrophytes, et considérant de plus les diatomées comme un proxy du phytobenthos. Il s'agit donc aujourd'hui de développer un indice diatomique dédié aux milieux lacustres. Pour se faire, une campagne exceptionnelle d'acquisition des données s'est déroulée entre 2015 et 2017 sur l'ensemble du territoire métropolitain avec l'aide des Agences de l'Eau et des DREAL. Le présent rapport, après un point sur les données reçues et exploitables, a pour objectif principal de présenter les travaux de développement d'un indice dédié à l'évaluation de l'état écologique des plans d'eau à l'échelle du territoire national. Il est important de souligner les limites de l'indice proposé, assis sur un jeu de données trop limité, appelant à une révision lorsque davantage de données seront disponibles.

Exotic hydrophytes are often considered as aquatic weeds, especially when forming dense mats on an originally poorly colonized environment. While management efforts and research are focused on the control and on the impacts of aquatic weeds on biodiversity, their influence on shallow lakes’ biogeochemical cycles is still unwell explored. The aim of the present study is to understand whether invasive aquatic plants may affect the biogeochemistry of shallow lakes and act as ecosystem engineers. We performed a multi-year investigation (2013–2015) of dissolved biogeochemical parameters in an oligo-mesotrophic shallow lake of south-west of France (Lacanau Lake), where wind-sheltered bays are colonized by dense mats of exotic Egeria densa Planch. and Lagarosiphon major (Ridl.) Moss. We collected seasonal samples at densely vegetated and plant-free areas, in order to extrapolate and quantify the role of the presence of invasive plants on the biogeochemistry, at the macrophyte stand scale and at the lake scale. Results revealed that elevated plant biomass triggers oxygen (O2), dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and nitrogen (DIN) stratification, with hypoxia events frequently occurring at the bottom of the water column. Within plants bed, elevated respiration rates generated important amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and ammonium (NH4+). The balance between benthic nutrients regeneration and fixation into biomass results strictly connected to the seasonal lifecycle of the plants. Indeed, during summer, DIC and DIN regenerated from the sediment are quickly fixed into plant biomass and sustain elevated growth rates. On the opposite, in spring and autumn, bacterial and plant respiration overcome nutrients fixation, resulting in an excess of nutrients in the water and in the increase of carbon emission toward the atmosphere. Our study suggests that aquatic weeds may perform as ecosystem engineers, by negatively affecting local oxygenation and by stimulating nutrients regeneration.

In this intercontinental study of stream diatoms, we asked three important but still unresolved ecological questions: (1) What factors drive the biogeography of species richness and species abundance distribution (SAD)? (2) Are climate-related hypotheses, which have dominated the research on the latitudinal and altitudinal diversity gradients, adequate in explaining spatial biotic variability? and (3) Is the SAD response to the environment independent of richness? We tested a number of climatic theories and hypotheses (i.e., the species-energy theory, the metabolic theory, the energy variability hypothesis, and the climatic tolerance hypothesis) but found no support for any of these concepts, as the relationships of richness with explanatory variables were nonexistent, weak, or unexpected. Instead, we demonstrated that diatom richness and SAD evenness generally increased with temperature seasonality and at mid- to high total phosphorus concentrations. The spatial patterns of diatom richness and the SADmainly longitudinal in the United States but latitudinal in Finlandwere defined primarily by the covariance of climate and water chemistry with space. The SAD was not entirely controlled by richness, emphasizing its utility for ecological research. Thus, we found support for the operation of both climate and water chemistry mechanisms in structuring diatom communities, which underscores their complex response to the environment and the necessity for novel predictive frameworks.

International audience; Disturbance increases ecosystem functioning in productive habitats but its effect in stressful conditions is less documented, although this is crucial for understanding the resilience of disturbed systems to natural and anthropogenic disturbances. Our goal is to assess the influence of physical disturbance for ecosystem functioning in coastal sand dunes. We set up an experimental design, including two treatments in four blocks, in a four km-long dune site from South West France. We simulated physical disturbance from marine and wind origin, digging Experimental Notches (EN), in the incipient (West EN treatment) and established foredunes (East EN treatment), respectively and compared the effects of EN to controls along transects including 13 positions from the beach to the transition dune behind ENs. We sampled litter decomposition rate, elevation variation, wind abrasion, sand grain size and vegetation composition. We also used drones to quantify sand deposition sheets during severe winter storms. Litter decomposition rate was the highest where sand accumulated the most, at the ecotone between the established foredune and transition dune and in the East EN treatment. This increase of ecosystem functioning was correlated to wind patterns. However, there was also a strong alongshore variability, with important sand deposition sheets occurring in some blocks depending on dune geomorphology. Vegetation composition was mainly influenced by shoreline distance, but also by the block and EN treatment, with a strong interaction between these three effects. We conclude that physical disturbance increase ecosystem functioning in the stressful conditions of the Atlantic sand dunes, only when sand accumulates, whereas excessive disturbances enhancing sand erosion are not favorable for ecosystem functioning.

Linguistic complexity in test items may jeopardize the validity of interpreting English language learners’ (ELLs’) test scores as measures of their content knowledge in mathematics and science. Although previous studies have demonstrated the effect of linguistic complexity on ELL performance, few examined individual linguistic features. Particularly, little is known about features operating at the level of the item as a whole, rather than the word or sentence level. This study identified 13 linguistic features likely to impact ELL performance on 162 Grade 5 multiple-choice science items from a large-scale science assessment. After analyzing the frequency and distribution of features, we correlated their presence with items’ Differential Item Functioning (DIF) values disfavoring ELLs. Aim To examine species and trait composition in stream diatoms along environmental, climatic and spatial gradients and to ascertain if the use of different levels of biological organization is beneficial for investigating global environmental changes and the role of history in structuring communities. Location Global cover with datasets from the Antilles, France, Finland, New Zealand, La Reunion and the United States. Methods We related diatom species composition, guild composition, total richness and richness across guilds to environmental, climatic and spatial variables. We used non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) with environmental variable fitting, redundancy analysis (RDA) with variation partitioning, analysis of similarities and linear mixed models as statistical tools. Results Species composition differed significantly among the study regions, while the differences in guild composition were less pronounced. US and French streams shared a large number of species, whereas islands shared only a few species with continents. For species composition, all predictors showed significant relationships with diatoms but pH, longitude, annual temperature and precipitation had the strongest impact. Variation partitioning revealed that the local environment outperformed climatic and spatial variables. For guild composition, there was a substantial overlap across regions in NMDS. The results from RDA demonstrated, however, that guild composition was better explained than species composition, especially by environmental variables. Both species and guild richness were significantly correlated with most predictors. Notably, species richness scaled positively with latitude. Main conclusions Diatom species and guild composition varied substantially in response to local environment and climatic and spatial variables indicating both environmental and historical effects. Species composition discriminated the geographical regions better, while guild composition detected the environmental gradients better. This emphasizes the need to examine different levels of organization to gain a deeper understanding of the roles of environment versus history in structuring communities. These findings suggest that diatom species distributions are under strong microevolutionary constraints. Conversely, guild distributions are less dependent on historic factors and are driven primarily by the environment, which makes them better suited for research on global environmental change.

Coconut Creek (Florida), ISSN 0749-0208.In the context of climate change, coastal dunes, which provide significant ecosystem services, are one of the most vulnerable coastal environments. Moreover, the lack of high resolution and large spatial scale data limits our understanding of coastal dunes, which are subject to important morphological variations over a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. This study is focused on combining non-intrusive remote sensing methods including a series of historical aerial photographs, airborne Lidar and UAV surveys in order to better understand the coastal dune morphodynamic on a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. On the time scale of decades, aerial photos indicate a reasonably stable coastal dune position, with large anthropogenic reprofiling and vegetation planting resulting in a reasonably alongshore-uniform morphology. On shorter time scales, the combination of Lidar and UAV 4-km surveys between 2011 and 2019 shows a quasi-steady dune volume increase by approximately 64 m3/m, associated with a foredune crest growth and a landward migration reaching 1.1 m and 0.54 m in average, respectively. On the other hand, the dune foot shows a more complex dynamics, dominated by a large landward migration (shoreline erosion) of approximately 20 m during the outstanding winter of 2013/2014 followed by a slow seaward migration (recovery). This study provides new insight into coastal dune morphological changes driven by both Aeolian and marine processes from the time scale of storm to approximately a decade, highlighting the relevance of UAV surveys for such applications.

International audience; The restoration and the preservation of aquatics ecosystems is a critical issue in our contemporary society. In lake ecosystems, phytoplankton taxonomic-based indicators have been developed to evaluate water quality, but suffer of limited ecosystem ecological value. The recent development of functional approaches may allow to evaluate other aspects of ecosystem quality, and to develop new trait-based indicators responding to different environmental conditions. Here, our aim was to analyze the response of phytoplankton traits to numerous environmental variables and to identify relevant traits for the development of future indicator metrics. We used a French national database of 469 lakes, consisting in phytoplankton biovolumes and physicochemical values. The response of 84 morpho-functional traits towards environmental variables was tested with Machine Learning models, taking into account lake typology. We identified 21 traits significantly related to environmental variables. Dissolved Organic Carbon, Nitrates and Total Suspend Solids were the physiochemical parameters which had the higher influence on our traits selection. However the response of phytoplanktonic traits to environmental variables did not change according to lake typology, advocating for a consistent response at the whole national scale contrary to the classical taxonomic approach. We finally identified several candidate traits that could be used for the development of new metrics for French lakes in a context of bio-assessment programs.

International audience; Niche conservatism, whereby species niche characteristics are conserved over space and time, is an important cause for large-scale species distributions and diversity gradients on Earth. Dispersal mechanisms are expected to have a strong effect on niche conservatism, considering that high dispersal rate may prevent local adaptation and favor niche conservatism. In freshwater ecosystems, diatoms are usually recognized as cosmopolitan species, due to low dispersal limitation and high reproductive rates. However, the extent to which niche characteristics of diatoms are conserved across space has rarely been tested and should give interesting insights for the understanding of their biogeographic distribution. To address this question, we implemented species distribution modeling and analyses of species niche breadths and optima. Species distribution models (SDMs) along environmental and climatic gradients were developed with data from the US and then tested with datasets from France, Finland, New Zealand, Antilles and La R ́eunion islands. Given that the US SDMs poorly predicted the species distributions in other regions, we concluded that diatoms do not appear to exhibit niche conservatism. Weak correspondence of niche optima and niche breadths in one region with the respective species properties in another region further indicated a general lack of niche conservatism. Analyses of species differing in occupancy (i.e., core vs. satellite species) and traits (i.e., diatom ecological guilds) further confirmed that niche conservatism was also weak across functional groups. Although diatoms species are considered to be generally dispersal-unlimited, our results indicate that their dispersal rate may be more moderate than previously thought. Finally, the capacity to adapt locally to environmental and climatic conditions may allow diatoms to better cope with global environmental changes

The ecology and taxonomy of the epilithic diatom flora of the Agnéby River, Ivory Coast were studied in 2012. Ten sites were investigated and diatoms were sampled on glass slides immersed for a period of 30 days during the wet and dry seasons. Physico-chemical parameters were measured at each site while sampling diatoms. Five taxa were largely dominant: Planothidium comperei CE Wetzel, N’Guessan and Tison-Rosebery, Eolimna minima (Grunow) Lange-Bertalot, Planothidium piaficum (JR Carter and Denny) CE Wetzel and Ector, Cocconeis schroederi Foged and Cocconeis scutellum var. parva (Grunow in Van Heurck) Cleve. Electrical conductivity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, nitrite and phosphorus were found to influence the distribution of taxa.Keywords: diversity, environmental parameters, seasonal variability, tropical rivers, West Africa

International audience; Peu urbanisée et riche d’une grande diversité d‘environnements côtiers comprenant notamment les dunes littorales girondines et landaises, la côte rocheuse et les plages de poche du pays basque, les cordons littoraux et les marais maritimes du Bassin d’Arcachon, la côte aquitaine n’en est pas moins l’une des côtes métropolitaines les plus exposées à l’érosion côtière. En moyenne, la côte sableuse (hors Bassin d’Arcachon) recule de 2,5 m/an en Gironde et 1,7 m/an dans les Landes ; la côte rocheuse basque recule quant à elle de 0,25 m/an en moyenne.Réseau d’experts au service du littoral, l’Observatoire de la Côte Aquitaine (OCA) est chargé du suivi des phénomènes d’érosion et de submersion sur le littoral de l’ex-région Aquitaine depuis 1996. Porté techniquement par le BRGM et l’ONF, et en coordination avec les organismes de recherche et d’expertise néo-aquitains (Universités, CNRS, CEREMA, Centre de la Mer de Biarritz, …), il apporte à l’ensemble des acteurs du littoral, des outils scientifiques et techniques d’aide à la décision, à la gestion et à la prévention des risques côtiers. Les techniques de suivi en constante évolution (DGPS, LiDAR, photographies aériennes, images satellites haute résolution, lasers 3D…) ont pu servir à de multiples réalisations scientifiques analysant les évolutions morphologiques du littoral à l’échelle régionale et aux échelles temporelles évènementielle, annuelle et pluriannuelle. L’objet de cette communication est de mettre en valeur le savoir scientifique accumulé au cours des 20 années consacrées à l’observation du littoral, présenter les produits de diffusion de la connaissance développés par l’OCA, issus d’une démarche intégrée de développement des outils de mesure et du réseau.

National audience; La Directive Cadre Européenne sur l'Eau (DCE) exige la mise en oeuvre de suivis hydrobiologiques au sein des réseaux de surveillance afin d'évaluer l'état écologique des masses d'eau. Cette Directive a entraîné le développement et/ou l'adaptation de méthodes de bio-indication, qui doivent faire preuve d'un niveau de confiance et de précision suffisants. Dans le but d'évaluer ce niveau de confiance et précision, un programme national ONEMA-AQUAREF a été lancé à partir de 2013 permettant de travailler sur les sources de variabilités et d'incertitudes liées à l'application des méthodes d'évaluation d'état écologique, notamment pour le protocole «Diatomées en cours d'eau». La présente réunion de restitution scientifique et d'échange vise à restituer aux intervenants des DREALs, largement mis à contribution pour la réalisation de cette étude, les principaux résultats obtenus concernant l'incertitude d'évaluation diatomique des cours d'eau à partir de l'IBD2007. Une première approche, qui visait à estimer l'incertitude globale liée à l'effet inter-opérateurs dans le cadre de l'application de l'Indice Biologique Diatomée (IBD2007), s'est appuyée sur la réalisation de 2 campagnes annuelles de prélèvements, qui ont eu lieu en 2013 et 2014 sur une soixantaine de stations avec la participation active de 3 types d'opérateurs : les DREALs, des bureaux d'études et Irstea. Cette première phase a permis d'évaluer l'impact de la variabilité due à l'opérateur, intégrant de façon globale les différentes étapes du processus d'obtention de ces données (relevé de terrain, travail en laboratoire de préparation et de détermination de l'échantillon, obtention de la liste taxinomique, calcul de l'indicateur et attribution d'une classe d'état écologique), sur la variabilité des résultats d'évaluation procurés par le maillon diatomique. Les listes taxonomiques obtenues par les opérateurs s'avèrent relativement différentes, avec seulement un tiers de taxons communs. Cependant cette dissimilarité taxonomique n'engendre pas automatiquement d'écarts importants de note d'indice, nit de changement de classe d'état écologique. Un deuxième volet de travail était centré sur l'étude de la variabilité interannuelle de la méthode IBD2007, attribuable à la variabilité naturelle du milieu et des flores, à partir de jeux de données historiques d'inventaires diatomiques stockés dans la base de données PANDORE à partir des résultats obtenus dans le cadre des campagnes annuelles des réseaux de surveillance. La variabilité des notes d'indices a été comparée sur une chronique de valeurs obtenues sur une sélection de sites dont l'état physico-chimique était considéré comme stable. Au bilan, les résultats obtenus vis-à-vis de de ces deux types de variabilité, inter-opérateurs et interannuelle, sont assez comparables et la variabilité interannuelle telle que calculée ici peut alors être considérée comme une approximation a maxima de l'incertitude liée à la note d'IBD2007, puisqu'elle combine variabilité temporelle du milieu et des flores, et effet inter-opérateurs. Enfin les analyses de la dernière étape du programme ont permis d'établir, à partir des notes d'IBD2007, un modèle de probabilité de classement d'état écologique à inclure dans les règles d'évaluation. Celui-ci a pris en compte l'impact de la propagation de l'incertitude depuis la note obtenue jusqu'à l'attribution finale de la classe d'état, permettant de cadrer statistiquement la robustesse globale de l'évaluation de l'état écologique obtenue à partir des notes d'IBD2007.

Dans le cadre d'application de la Directive Communautaire sur l'Eau ou DCE (Directive 2000/60/CE, JOCE, 23 Oct. 2000), les masses d'eau françaises doivent être surveillées et leur Etat Ecologique doit être évalué régulièrement, en s'appuyant sur le contenu d'Arrêtés officiels pris pour sa retranscription et sa mise en application dans le cadre juridique français. Deux Arrêtés définissent précisément les pratiques nationales à suivre dans cet objectif, notamment un Arrêté Surveillance qui cadre le réseau de surveillance national et les pratiques réglementaires à y réaliser (notamment les listes de paramètres à suivre, sur quel type de milieu et quelles matrices, ainsi que la périodicité des suivis), et un Arrêté Evaluation qui définit les modalités d'évaluation de l'état écologique à partir des résultats des suivis et de leur agrégation spatio-temporelle adéquate. Ces 2 Arrêtés font l'objet d'amendements périodiques calés sur des dates-clés de la gestion (cycles de gestion des Masses d'Eau d'une durée unitaire de 6 ans). L'Equipe ECOVEA d'Irstea Bordeaux, au titre d'experts-maillons végétaux, participe aux modifications périodiques de ces Arrêtés grâce au soutien apporté dans le cadre de Fiches-Actions AFB-Irstea portant sur des domaines spécifiques d'application. Ainsi, une fiche-action N° 23 2016-2018 a permis de mettre au point un nouveau dispositif permettant d'évaluer de façon judicieuse les très grands cours d'eau de France (TGCE), qui n'étaient pas évalués correctement par le passé. Ce dispositif a pu être aussitôt intercalibré au niveau Européen, dans le cadre d'un exercice collectif organisé à peu près en même temps que l'Etude Nationale. L'extrait modificatif d'Arrêté joint est relatif aux propositions de modifications à apporter pour la nouvelle version d'Arrêté Evaluation, qui visent principalement à introduire et à officialiser ce nouveau système d'Evaluation des TGCE, ainsi qu'à amender quelques autres petits problèmes détectés sur la partie de l'Annexe 3 concernant la partie d'évaluation diatomique des cours d'eau.

Faune-Aquitaine.org; Pour mieux comprendre comment les espèces répondent aux pressions d’origine environnementale et/ou humaine qui impactent leur distribution et leur assemblage, nous avons réalisé un échantillonnage de l’avifaune sur un ensemble de 94 sites distribués le long du cordon dunaire aquitain afin d’évaluer comment les communautés d’oiseaux répondent à différentes pressions tant à l’échelle locale (des dunes blanches aux dunes boisées) qu’à l’échelle régionale (du nord de la Gironde au sud des Landes). Plus d’une soixantaine d’espèces ont été contactées sur l’ensemble du cordon dunaire avec en moyenne une quinzaine d’espèces par site.Nous montrons que l’urbanisation, la présence de végétation arbustive, de forêt et la latitude sont des facteurs qui ont une influence significative sur les variations inter-sites d’assemblage d’espèces, de richesse spécifique, d’abondance et de diversité fonctionnelle.

International audience; Understanding the mechanisms that drive beta diversity, an important aspect of regional biodiversity, remains a key ecological question. Beta diversity and its components can provide an insight into the processes generating regional biodiversity patterns. We tested whether environmental filtering or dispersal related processes predominated along the stream watercourse by analysing the responses of taxonomic and functional diatom beta diversity to environmental and spatial factors. We examined the variation of total beta diversity and its components (turnover and nestedness) in benthic diatom species and ecological guilds (motile, planktonic, low- and high profile) with respect to watercourse position (up-, mid-, and downstream) in 2182 sites throughout France. We tested the effects of pure environmental and pure spatial factors on beta diversity with partial Mantel tests. Environmental factors included eight physico-chemical variables, while geographical distances between sites were used as spatial factors. We also correlated alpha and gamma diversity, and the degree of nestedness (NODF metric) with environmental variables. Total beta diversity and its turnover component displayed higher values upstream than mid- and downstream. The nestedness component exhibited low values, even when NODF values increased from up- to downstream. Pure environmental factors were highly significant for explaining total beta diversity and turnover regardless of watercourse position, but pure spatial factors were mostly significant mid- and downstream, with geographical distance being positively correlated with beta diversity. Across sites, nutrient enrichment decreased turnover but increased the degree of nestedness. Motile and low profile diatoms comprised the most abundant guilds, but their beta diversity patterns varied in an opposite way. The lowest guild beta diversity was observed upstream for low profile species, and downstream for motile species. In conclusion, environmental filtering seemed to play a major role in structuring metacommunities irrespective of site watercourse position. Filtering promoted strong turnover patterns, especially in disconnected upstream sites. The greater role of spatial factors mid- and downstream was consistent with mass effects rather than neutral processes because these sites had lower total beta diversity than upstream sites. Motile species were most strongly affected by mass effects processes, whereas low profile species were primarily influenced by environmental conditions. Collectively, these findings suggest that partitioning of total beta diversity into its components and the use of diatom ecological guilds provide a useful framework for assessing the mechanisms underlying the metacommunity patterns along the stream watercourse.

The structuring of biotic communities nowadays appears to be the result of an interaction between deterministic and stochastic processes. Environmental filtering and dispersion processes appear to be determining factors for the structuring of communities, but their relative importance is still poorly understood because they are conditioned by the spatial scales and levels of anthropisation considered. While multi-scale quantitative approaches are therefore strongly recommended to better understand how local and regional processes affect communities, they are still too rare in the literature. We have thus tried to set up this type of study, taking as a model organism the diatoms, primary producers playing a key role in aquatic ecosystems. The objective was to understand the role of deterministic and stochastic processes in the structuring of benthic diatom meta-communities in rivers subjected to different levels of eutrophication, depending on the position of the site in the hydrographic network. Our work has led to the development of an innovative method capable of measuring the influence mass effect on diatom communities. The mass effect allows a species to survive outside its environmental optimum thanks to the constant arrival of individuals through an immigration process, thus leading to a strong homogenization of communities. A better understanding of this mechanism represents a significant step forward, particularly in the context of the global decline in biodiversity. This phenomenon also has an impact on bio-indication methods for environmental quality, since the presence of species in habitats that are a priori unfavourable to them can potentially mask the effect of local environmental conditions on communities, and thus induce a bias in the assessment of the ecological status of watercourses. Our results are in line with this, revealing that taking this process into account when calculating Diatom Biological Index allows a more effective response of the scores to the local environment, thus highlighting the importance of taking dispersion processes into account when developing new bio-indication methods.; La structuration des communautés biotiques apparaît aujourd'hui comme étant le résultat d'une interaction entre processus déterministes et stochastiques. Les filtres environnementaux ainsi que les processus de dispersion apparaissent comme des facteurs déterminants pour la structuration des communautés, mais leur importance relative est encore mal comprise car conditionnée par les échelles spatiales, et les niveaux d'anthropisation considérés. Si des approches quantitatives multi-échelles sont donc vivement recommandées pour mieux comprendre comment les processus locaux et régionaux affectent les communautés, celles-ci sont encore trop rares dans la littérature. Nous avons ainsi tenté de mettre en place ce type d'étude, en prenant comme organisme modèle les diatomées, producteurs primaires jouant un rôle clef au sein des écosystèmes aquatiques. L'objectif était d'appréhender le rôle des processus déterministes et stochastiques dans la structuration des méta-communautés de diatomées benthiques en cours d'eau soumises à différents niveaux d'eutrophisation, en fonction de la position du site dans le réseau hydrographique. Nos travaux ont permis de développer une méthode innovante capable de mesurer l'influence de l'effet de masse sur les communautés de disperseurs passifs que sont les diatomées. Ce processus permet à une espèce de subsister en dehors de son optimum environnemental grâce à l'arrivée constante d'individus via un processus d'immigration, induisant de fait une forte homogénéisation des communautés. Une meilleure compréhension de ce mécanisme représente une avancée conséquente, notamment dans le cadre du déclin mondial de la biodiversité. Ce phénomène impacte également significativement les méthodes de bio-indication de la qualité des milieux puisque la présence d'espèces dans des habitats qui leur sont a priori peu favorables peut potentiellement masquer l'effet des conditions locales du milieu sur les communautés, et ainsi induire un biais dans l'évaluation de l'état écologique des cours d'eau. Nos résultats vont dans ce sens, en révélant que la prise en compte de ce processus dans le calcul de l'Indice Biologique Diatomées permet une réponse plus fine de l'indice à l'environnement local, mettant ainsi en évidence l'importance de prendre en compte les processus de dispersion lors de l'élaboration de nouvelles méthodes de bio-indication.

The Water Framework Directive implementation requires a regular ecological status assessment of water bodies within the framework of 6-year management plans. The objective is to avoid the degradation of the ecological status or to restore the Good Ecological State to the deadline foreseen in the SDAGE, ie no later than the end of 2027. In that purpose, a first national "Evaluation Circular" was published in July 2005. Since then, this official text has already been subjected to several updates, the previous one (i.e. Evaluation Decree of 27 July 2015) still having force of application on most types of French rivers. However, the very large rivers at the meaning of the WFD (catchment area exceeding 10 000 km2 at the observation station) were not yet covered by a coherent national assessment system, because of certain specific difficulties encountered in our country and at the European level (in particular, complete absence of true references on such hydrosystems, subjected to significant anthropogenic pressures). The present action, supported by the Irstea-ONEMA action-sheet N ° 23 "Vegetal bio-indication in watercourses" (2016-2018), aimed to fill this regulatory deficit as quickly as possible by proposing a new national ad hoc system harmonized from the start, as far as possible, with the other European Member States. In that aim, the work carried out in the research team CARMA (now ECOVEA) consisted to: on the one hand, gather and analyze comparable national data obtained in a sufficiently homogeneous manner on these types of hydrosystems in the context of surveillance networks (IBD2007 data collected from 2007 to 2013); on the other hand, participate in a European exercise of intercalibration of the evaluation systems of such rivers, whose organization was concomitant to the realization of this national study. A first intercalibration exercise leaded by the "Large Rivers" X-GIG was carried out in 2012-2013 on various biological quality elements. In such circumstances, a bit too early compared to the progress of our own national reflection, France participated by providing data and as a mere external observer, but has not been subjected to the intercalibration. During this first exercise, participating countries were able to agree on a consensually defined default level of reference for this type of hydrosystems, and intercalibrated their national methods on that basis. A pressure-impact relationship between the PO4 content of waters and responses of the intercalibration common metric (diatomic ICM) has been established, from which a shared vision of good status of the LRs has been defined. Between 2015 and 2017, France took part in the second intercalibration exercise entitled "Fit-in exercise", leaded under the joint coordination of Bulgaria and Austria, which directly used the results previously obtained by the "LR" X-GIG and involved the participation of 8 different Member States. The results of this second collective exercise, communicated orally and informally during 2017, were validated through the official publication of the Decision EU 2018/229 (February 12th, 2018), authorizing at the same time the enforcement of the new evaluation system proposed by France in the context of that exercise. The incorporation of this new system inside an amendment to the French "Evaluation Decree" has therefore been proposed between October 2017 and February 2018, then signed (July 27th, 2018) and published at the JORF August 28th, 2018). The new assessment system is based on 3 evaluation grids that make it possible to assess in a differentiated and judicious way 3 types of large rivers (poorly-mineralized lowlands; mineralized lowlands; large rivers directly issued from mountain areas).; La mise en oeuvre de la Directive Cadre sur l'Eau requiert l'évaluation régulière de l'Etat Ecologique des masses d'eau, dans le cadre de plans de gestion de 6 ans. L'objectif poursuivi est d'éviter la dégradation de l'Etat Ecologique, ou de restaurer le Bon Etat Ecologique à l'échéance prévue dans les SDAGE, et au plus tard à fin 2027. Dans cet objectif, une première Circulaire Nationale Evaluation a été publiée en Juillet 2005. Ce texte a depuis fait l'objet de plusieurs réactualisations dont la précédente (Arrêté Evaluation du 27 Juillet 2015) avait force d'application sur la plupart de nos types de cours d'eau nationaux. Cependant, les très grands cours d'eau au sens de la DCE (surface cumulée de bassin versant dépassant les 10 000 km2 à la station d'observation) n'y étaient pas encore couverts par un dispositif d'évaluation cohérent du fait de certaines difficultés spécifiques rencontrées à notre échelle nationale comme à l'échelle Européenne, dont l'absence complète de références vraies sur de tels systèmes relativement à fortement anthropisés. La présente action, soutenue dans le cadre de la fiche-action Irstea-ONEMA N° 23 « Bio-indication végétale en cours d'eau » (2016-2018), avait pour but de combler au plus vite ce déficit réglementaire en proposant un nouveau dispositif national ad hoc, si possible harmonisé d'emblée avec les autres Etats-Membres Européens. Dans cette optique, le travail a d'une part consisté à rassembler et à analyser les données comparables obtenues selon un mode suffisamment homogène sur ces types d'hydrosystèmes dans le cadre des réseaux de surveillance nationaux (données IBD2007 recueillies de 2007 à 2013) ; il a d'autre part couvert la participation à un exercice européen d'intercalibration des systèmes d'évaluation de tels cours d'eau, dont l'organisation était concomitante à ce chantier national. Un premier exercice d'intercalibration européenne avait été réalisé en 2012-2013 par le X-GIG "Large Rivers" sur divers maillons-clés biologiques. Dans ce contexte un peu prématuré par rapport aux avancées de notre propre réflexion nationale, la France a participé par la fourniture de données et en tant qu'observateur externe, mais ne s'est pas prêtée à l'intercalibration. Durant ce premier exercice, les pays participants ont pu se mettre d'accord sur un niveau de référence par défaut, qui a été défini sur un mode consensuel pour ce type d'hydrosystèmes, et ont ensuite intercalibré leurs méthodes nationales sur cette base. Une relation pression-impact entre la teneur en PO4 des eaux et les réponses de la métrique commune d'inter-calibration (ICM diatomique) a été établie, à partir de laquelle une vision partagée du bon état des très grands cours d'eau a été définie. Entre 2015 et 2017, la France a donc pris part au deuxième exercice d'intercalibration intitulé "Fit-in exercise", mené sous la coordination conjointe de la Bulgarie et de l'Autriche avec la participation de 8 États membres différents, et qui s'est appuyé sur les résultats précédemment obtenus par le "LR" X-GIG. Les résultats de cet exercice collectif, communiqués par oral et de manière informelle courant 2017, ont été officialisés par la signature de la décision UE 2018/229 du 12-02-2018, validant du même coup le prototype de système d'évaluation proposé par la France dans le cadre de cet exercice. L'intégration du nouveau système dans un modificatif de l'Arrêté "Evaluation" français, proposée entre octobre 2017 et février 2018, est devenue officielle suite à la signature de ce nouveau texte en date du 27 juillet 2018 (Arrêté paru au JORF du 28 Août 2018). Ce nouveau système d'évaluation se base sur 3 grilles différentes qui permettent d'évaluer de manière différenciée et judicieuse 3 types de grands fleuves (plaines peu minéralisées, plaines minéralisées; grands cours d'eau directement issus de massifs montagneux).

Dans un contexte où les pressions anthropiques n'ont pas cessé d'augmenter depuis la fin du 18ème siècle, il est primordial de disposer d'outils de bio-indication robustes. Ces derniers nous permettent de suivre l'évolution de l'état de santé des écosystèmes lacustres français sous l'impulsion de l'Union européenne, par l'intermédiaire de la Directive Cadre Européenne sur l'Eau (DCE, 2000). Le présent travail s'insère dans la continuité des développements d'un indice multi-métrique pour l'évaluation de l'état écologique des plans d'eau en ce qui concerne le compartiment phytoplancton. Dans ce rapport, nous expliquons les modifications que nous avons apportées à la base de données « phytoplancton » d'Aix-en-Provence. Puis nous montrons comment il est possible d'utiliser des modèles de « machine learning » pour résoudre diverses problématiques : séparation de la base de données en groupes géographiques, extraction de seuils physico-chimiques et essais d'élaboration d'une nouvelle métrique. Nous avons mis en évidence qu'il était possible de diviser notre base de données modifiée en quatre groupes typologiques via la méthode des « k-means ». Une refonte de la méthode des « Gradient Forest » nous a permis d'extraire des seuils physico-chimiques dans chacun de ces quatre groupes. De plus, nous avons montré que les modèles « Random Forest » pouvaient être une bonne alternative aux méthodes classiques, pour le développement d'une métrique de bio-indication ou de diagnostic. Dans ce cadre-là, nous pensons que ces méthodes innovantes d'intelligence artificielle peuvent être un atout de taille dans l'aide au développement d'indices de bio-indication lacustres. Ces outils de diagnostic sont indissociables de la protection des écosystèmes aquatiques, étant donné qu'ils permettent de rendre compte des pressions anthropiques subies par ces systèmes aquatiques complexes.
