- Abstract
Ernest Renan's name was first heard by a large Turkish audience in Paris in March 1883, following a lecture entitled Islam and Science. The backlash against this infamous treatise earned the author a notorious reputation. Three years earlier, Ernest Renan had been invited to lecture on the relationship between Christianity and Rome at the Institute founded by Robert Hibbert in 1847. The work we have translated is the second in a series of lectures Renan gave in London in 1880 entitled 'The Influence of Rome on Christianity.' The other lectures in the series will also be published by the author. As far as we can tell from the translated lecture and the others in the series, it concerns the doctrine of papal infallibility declared by Pius IX after the First Vatican Council in 1870. In the context of this development, which caused great anger and concern in Protestant countries, it makes sense that such a conference should be held in England two years after the death of Pope Pius IX. When the Council was held, there had already been a large Irish Catholic population in England, forced to emigrate to the island after the two great Irish famines of 1845–1852 and 1870. W. E. Gladstone, the great Prime Minister of the time, wrote a series of pamphlets from 1870 onwards in which he explained that he had doubts as to which side the Catholic British subjects would lean to when faced with the conflicting orders of the Empire and the Pope and explained how these doubts could be overcome. In this lecture, as in his other lectures in the series, Renan has taken a route around the claims of legitimacy of the Church of Rome and the nullity of those claims. Here, he gives a history of the rise and fall of Rome to its present prestigious position in the Church hierarchy. He presents a panorama of the pagan era and the new era, marked by the replacement of Remus and Romulus by Peter and Paul. Renan argues that, far from representing Christ, moreover, the papacy is a structure developed in opposition to His ideals. By linking this claim with the Christian narratives of Paul and Peter and the deeds of Nero, he argues that the papacy, or rather the Church of Rome, formalised the despicable acts of Nero centuries later by decreeing them at the First Vatican Council and making them the doctrine of the Church. In support of this argument, he claims that the original founders of the Roman Church were Aquila, a Jew from Pontus, and Priscilla, his wife. He further states that other apostles, notably James and Peter, launched some counter-missions in Jerusalem to compete with the influence of Paul's missions and, therefore, that they followed Paul's itinerary in these missions. Renan states that the conflict between Paul and Peter was essentially between the two traditions, Judaeo-Christian and Hellenic, and that pagan Rome sought to consolidate its position among the churches by establishing a duality in the form of Peter and Paul as the successors of Remus and Romulus. Reconciliation, however, could only be achieved after the deaths of the two apostles. For, as Renan points out, Paul and Peter were bitter opponents during their lifetimes. However, the unity of Paul's Hellenism and Peter's Judaeo-Christianity was essential to the future success of the Roman Church. For, according to Renan, while the Judeo-Christian tradition represents the conservative spirit, without which nothing can be preserved, Hellenism represents progress and development, without which nothing can really exist. The success of the Roman Church lies in its ability to bring these two opposing ends together. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

WALL coverings , *DECORATION & ornament - Abstract
This paper reports on the "marmora" used in the parietal wall coverings found at the Villa dei Quintili in Rome, Italy. Special attention is paid to the preparation of the walls and to the macroscopic identification of the "marmora", noting a great variety of parietal marble coverings and lapidary types, as well as the reuse of ornamental rocks in the preparation of the walls. Greyish white marbles ("greco scritto" and "bardiglio") are in the majority, and the use of two varieties of Hispanic decorative rocks was verified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The advent of the COVID-19 vaccine signified a historic milestone in the field of vaccinology, showcasing remarkable scientific collaboration and global solidarity. However, the most prominent hurdle in maximizing the global public health impact of vaccines remains the absence of comprehensive and inclusive health systems in both high- and low-resource settings. Our discussion centers around the major contributing factors that played a key role in formulating the rapid and efficacious COVID-19 vaccines. Simultaneously, we illuminate the disparities that have marred the vaccine delivery process throughout the pandemic. In particular, we highlight the case scenarios of two minority and vulnerable communities from the Global South and North—the undocumented migrants in Thailand and the Roma community in Europe—who continue to experience inequitable vaccine access regardless of their location. We note that a crucial programmatic solution that is rooted in inclusive and equitable global public health policy, characterized by empathy and trust and bolstered by digital innovation, is lacking. These examples underscore the significance of establishing a comprehensive and integrated health system at multiple levels across countries and the entire world. Furthermore, we highlight the need for both local and global actors to collaboratively engage in vaccine distribution efforts. By gaining a concise grasp of these intricacies, the global community will be better poised to effectively combat future pandemics and emerging health challenges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The history of Roma population in Montenegro has been a history of exclusion, displacement, and refusal by the rest of the Montenegrin society. Members of other ethnocultural communities in Montenegro, social actors, and institutions are not sufficiently aware of the importance of understanding the position of this community in historical terms. The methodology applied in this paper entails analysis of ethnographic material, unpublished archival sources as well as relevant legal and political documents. The aim of the paper is to examine the deep historical roots of exclusion, marginalization and frequent migration of the Roma population in Montenegro in different periods of history. This article reports on a qualitative study with migrant Roma communities in South Yorkshire, UK. The study was undertaken shortly after the 2016 European Union membership referendum in the UK. It finds that while hostility towards the studied Roma population did increase immediately after the resulting Leave vote, their experiences of racialisation can be situated more clearly in how the result engendered a shift in the expressions and understandings of their own place and position, with their particular histories as EU migrants of Roma heritage. In doing so, it adds to the evidence of how racialisation is manifest for such groups within this period. While acknowledging the specificity of these experiences, the article also argues that Roma share some features with the experiences of other EU migrants, also situated in the Leave period of social, cultural and geopolitical uncertainty. In capitalist Eastern Europe, surplus population is created at the intersection of economic restructuring, leading to the decline of jobs, the absorption of housing in broader circuits of capital accumulation, and the state's disinvestment in social housing. Drawing on the lived experiences of the impoverished Roma from Baia Mare (Maramureș county, Romania), I analyze how racialization produces them as surplus-as-laborer and surplus-as-tenant. The article explores the historically constituted labor-housing nexus. Capitalist enterprises are interested in having permanent access to a cheap and flexible labor force that reproduces in housing conditions that are as low cost as they are inadequate. Private real estate capital excludes those who cannot afford the fast-rising level of the ground rent while the post-socialist state refuses to invest in public housing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MYTHOLOGY - Abstract
The story of Romulus and Remus being kept alive by being suckled by a she-wolf, the most important known example of the founding of Rome, is called "Lupa Romana". It is understood that the depiction, which we encounter in Roman mosaic art examples, especially in civil architecture, was used as an element of propaganda. In addition, it has been determined that the depiction of the she-wolf was first used in Central Asia based on the myths of Roman, Etruscan and Turkish mythology. The use of the wolf image in world mythologies was also examined to avoid focusing on a single culture when determining the archetype. As a result, the points where the sacred wolf in different cultures influenced the cultures were analyzed and it was understood that the depictions in Central Asia were accepted as archetypes and spread to other communities with the Roman culture. We can learn much about the history of Gypsy-Roma in Britain through their song culture. This comparative analysis looks at a range of songs from different tradition-bearers whose words have been recorded from the late nineteenth century into the twenty-first. First the piece examines the shared-song culture of songs from the wider British vernacular. Then, it focuses on some neglected older recorded pieces in Angloromani (to varying degrees) which provide an even more intimate source created by Gypsy-Roma people. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In May 2019, a measles outbreak occurred in the French subregion of Loire‐Atlantique, particularly affecting Roma settlements. Various obstacles hindered the implementation of postexposure measures among Roma population, resulting in the spread of the cases to other settlements. Suspected cases of measles were immediately investigated and concerned settlements were visited for measles–mumps–rubella (MMR) vaccination. From July 1 to September 3, 2019, a first and then a second Health Reserve team helped for vaccination on the affected and then also the measles‐free settlements. Vaccination uptake was monitored with the use of the department's vaccination center immunization registry. Genotyping of selected samples was performed for comparison with viruses circulating at the same time in France and Romania. As of September 16 2019, 109 cases of measles were confirmed among Roma population, including 99 (91%) children under 15 years. Of the 85 people eligible for vaccination, 60 (71%) had not been vaccinated and 23 (27%) had an unknown vaccination status. Sequence comparison revealed that 28/29 sequenced D8 strains were 100% identical to the strain responsible for a large number of cases throughout France in 2019, and to two sequences reported in Romania among sporadic cases. The vaccination campaign resulted in 1136 people on 35 settlements receiving at least one dose of MMR vaccine and in the increase of one‐dose MMR vaccine coverage at 24 months from 43% (23/53) to 91% (48/53). With measles transmission continuing in Europe, efforts must be made to meet immunization coverage targets, particularly in hard‐to‐reach communities where outbreaks may be difficult to control. This article addresses the role of evangelicalism as a means of overcoming the trauma caused by natural disaster or disease. Using an ethnographic approach, it examines the connection between the beliefs of Roma in the Asparukhovo neigh-bourhood of the Bulgarian city of Varna and the hazards from which they suffered: the flood in June 2014 and Covid-19 during its first wave in 2020. People make sense of tragedy using different interpretations. It is seen as a form of divine punishment, a test for religious people, or it is associated with human negligence. Disaster provokes a variety of reactions among evangelical Christians, ranging from solidarity to distrust. Most importantly, their religious practice provides them with survival tactics and a direction to follow after catastrophe has disrupted their routine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Featured Application: Radon deficit reveals the presence of residual NAPL(Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid) contamination in soil and groundwater, giving a good picture of their vertical and spatial location. A combined and repeated approach consisting of measurements of radon and NAPL concentration coupled with groundwater table dynamics makes it possible to assess the evolution of the contamination phenomena. The application ofexploratory factor and principal component analyses to this dataset provides a key to understanding the attenuation processes, whether natural or induced, by the application of mitigation practices, and delivers models (conceptual and mathematical) to manage the site reclamation. Soil and groundwater contamination by NAPLs (Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids) is certainly a big issue for protecting the environment. In situ clean-up actions are routinely applied to mitigate the risk and are supplemented by monitoring surveys to assess the degree, extension, and evolution of the contamination. Radon gas is here used as a tracer of contamination because of its high solubility in non-polar solvents that produce a reduced concentration of the gas in polluted soil and groundwater with reference to radon levels in adjacent "clean" areas. This approach was employed in two sites where gasoline and diesel spillage occurred, causing soil and groundwater contamination. The two case studies were chosen because of their difference in terms of the hydrogeological features, age of the spillage, composition of residual NAPLs, and clean-up measures to test the advantages and limits of this approach in a variety of settings. Radon data, NAPL concentration in the groundwater (mainly total hydrocarbons, Methyl Tertiary-Butyl Ether and Ethyl Tertiary-Butyl Ether) and the depth of the groundwater table were periodically collected in surveys that spanned a period of two years. This dataset was statistically processed using principal component analysis to unravel which factors and attenuation processes are working in the sites and the response of the radon deficit approach to this complex series of phenomena concurrently occurring there. This thesis contributes to research and theory of racial capitalism by focusing on its operation in the post-socialist context. Drawing on eleven months of ethnographic research among racialised Roma workers in the city of Ostrava in the Czech Republic, I present an empirical exploration of a racialised "surplus population". Engaging with recent research on the applicability of Marx's category of the surplus population to society today, I make the case that, though Roma workers are integrated among wage labourers, they are contained in low-paid, stigmatised and precarious jobs, in a racialised condition of 'under-employment'. This way I provide an alternative to the dominant trope in the media and political discourse, supported by some academics, that presents unemployment as a universal fact of Roma lives. Analysing the surplus population empirically, I look both at the operation of capital and also at interventions of the Czech state that facilitate and maintain it. The main method of the thesis is participant observation, which I carried out while living in a racially segregated neighbourhood of Údol, and while working as a street cleaner and as a recycling operative, handpicking items on a conveyor belt, with a majority-Roma workforce. Through this work and daily interactions with my neighbours and colleagues, I collected data that show the interconnected features of racialised lives of working-class Roma, who find themselves contained in low-paid and insecure jobs; in segregated neighbourhoods marked by stigma; and needing to support their monthly budgets by various forms of credit. The thesis analyses the ethnographic data using these three key sociological categories: urban space; waged labour; and household debt. The overarching approach for my analysis is racialisation of class conditions, a process through which capital and state create and reproduce marginality at work, in housing and in access to finances. I situate my analysis in the context of debates about post-socialism, paying particular attention to the changes in class formations. To date, class-based analysis is still largely missing in scholarship on the Eastern European "transition to capitalism", partially as a result of the suppression of the notion of class conflict as something illegitimate in the post-socialist period. As a result, the language of class was replaced with notions of nation, ethnicity, family or church (Ost, 2005). This meant a departure from class-based interpretations of poverty, and also an analytical preference for conceptions of a racialised "culture of poverty" (Lewis, 1966). My thesis refocuses analytical attention on the racialisation of class formations in a context marked by three decades of complex changes that included the privatisation of national industries, which fundamentally reshaped the class structure and hierarchies and solidified the dominance of employers in the labour-capital relationship. Using class as a category of exploitation and dispossession, rather than stratification, I argue that Roma constitute an under-employed, racialised surplus population in the Czech Republic.

This thesis documents my story as a teacher. It begins with an account of the end of my teaching career, narrating the story of my suspension from practice, based on an accusation of falsifying data. This constitutes the start of a fascination with datafication, which continues throughout the thesis. The exploration of datafication begins with the conceptualisation of datafication as a doppelganger or second self. The use of the doppelganger as a thinking-tool enables me to experiment with fighting against datafication in the form of the data-doppelganger. Following on from this critique of the existing system through the conceptualisation of the data-doppelganger, I return to the field in an attempt to resist the dominant discourse of datafication. An ethnographic participatory action research project provides me with an opportunity to move to a more active phase of the research, where I attempt to work with others to develop new ways of assessing children in early years. As my thinking develops following the research project, I produce myself not as a coherent subject but as a divided self, a new subjectivity which to me, makes sense of the conflicted world in which I find myself. This acceptance of the divided subject constitutes a resolution to the conflict I encounter within myself and enables me to engage in active resistance to datafication. My final paper, which provides an analysis of a Roma child's development from a Roma perspective, embodies this resistance. In it, I link thought and action in praxis to produce an alternative child subject, a subject not seen through the lens of datafication, but viewed through a Romani lens. In this way, the thesis tells the story of my experience of datafication, a journey from encounters with the doppelganger to a final act of praxis.

Romanian State Secret Police (Securitate) files produced before 1989 can be accessed today through a lengthy process that requires official research authorization through a government office, the National Council for the Study of the Securitate Archives (Consiliul Național pentru Studierea Arhivelor Securității - CNSAS). The CNSAS General Document Fund includes large issue-related files under the umbrella of “The Gypsy Problem,” with thousands of pages of both national and county-level reports and recommendations. This paper teases out the granular documentary clues (spie, as Italian historian Carlo Ginzburg describes them) in some of the Securitate files to explore the way in which a pattern of documentary communication is built to frame Romani identity as idiosyncratically marginal, oriental, and parasitic. A particularly interesting aspect of the knowledge production imposed through these files is reflected by anecdotes that purportedly illustrate the character of the Roma. This study analyzes the relations of power built through hermeneutic devices and language choices which build “truth formulae” (Weir) that reify a particular view of Romani ethnicity, class, and gender. This archival (de)construction has implications for a long view of policy, political memory, and exclusionary societal attitudes today and in the future.

The cultural and ethnic characteristics of families are an important part of raising and nurturing health culture and behaviour in children. The low educational status, poor living conditions, poverty, stereotypes of behavior in large families, and imposed influences in the Roma community are prerequisites for the presence of risk factors for the health status of Roma children and create difficulties in the care by health professionals. The aim of this study is to analyze the cultural characteristics of the Roma ethnic group and their relation to the health status of children from this ethnic group in Bulgaria. Material and methods: documentary method. Literature analysis. Conclusions: Roma children live in poor living conditions, which puts them at risk of developing diseases. Insufficient parental education is a factor determining the health status of Roma children. Cultural features of the environment and family significantly influence the health culture of Roma children.

Many Roma across Europe continue to face a range of social problems, including ethnic discrimination, marginalisation, residential segregation, socio‐economic inequality, and extremist violence. The lack of effective policies to address these issues has reinforced a climate of hatred against Roma, further isolating many of them. It has also affected their position in the political arena, where Roma remain severely underrepresented. In this article, we analyse the situation of Roma in three Western Balkan countries and the policies developed to support them. We discuss the institutional structures for managing and improving the socio‐economic conditions of identity‐based communities and examine the position of the Roma within these institutional contexts. We also explore attitudes towards Roma‐related policies and how Roma citizens themselves in these three countries perceive their position.

This study examines persistent racism, despite its formal denial, through an interdisciplinary approach that combines critical race theories, whiteness study and social psychology. It questions whether the analytical and empirical distinction between different forms of prejudice—despite their coexistence—can yield positive outcomes in the fight against racism. Considering the case of the Roma community in Italy, specifically within the universalistic approach of the Italian school system, the level of prejudice was measured in a sample of 305 middle school teachers. The main findings confirm the persistence of blatant prejudice concealed beneath a veneer of subtle racism and reveal that an educational institution’s rhetorical commitment to democracy may not substantially impact the behavior of democratic teachers when interacting with Roma individuals. The systemic inequalities ingrained within the education system are reminiscent of colonial times, where practices that once suppressed the potential of Africans are now used against Italian Roma citizens. This article finally suggests how teacher training might be improved to reduce racism, based on the different profiles of prejudicial attitudes detected among teachers.

While the expansion of higher education increases access to higher qualifications, students from disadvantaged backgrounds are at an increased risk of dropping out. Research shows that student progression is more successful in inclusive higher education environments. The study focuses on the promotion of opportunities for Roma in higher education, contributing to the international discourse on this issue. A Hungarian higher education organization supporting young Roma people and students of socially disadvantaged backgrounds is presented, relying on the experiences of young people who have been members of this community over the past twenty years. The question is whether and how the inclusive characteristics of the organization are reflected in the recollections of our interviewees (N = 50) about the student society. The narrative content analysis of the interviews shows that the former students’ entry into and time spent in the student society was embedded in a strong (peer and tutorial) social network, which framed and amplified the mentioned inclusive elements and forms of support of the organization. The inclusive approach and practices of the student society community played a key role in the mobility of Roma youth during their university years and beyond.

This is the first known study of the socio-cognitive development of Lyuli children, a Roma-type group living in Bukhara in Uzbekistan. The research was conducted in schools in Bukhara serving both Lyuli children and Uzbek children, both of whom are multi-lingual but whose sociolinguistic circumstances are somewhat different. There has been less cross-cultural work on later stages of Theory of Mind development, in which children have to make inferences about the mental states of characters in a complex narrative. The research here shows that the children from both groups do remarkably well on these tasks, and their multilingualism is hypothesized to be the source of their success relative to other children studied with similar narratives.

The article provides a comprehensive economic and legal analysis of the position of national minorities in the labour market. To do this, a comparative analysis of the socio-economic and legal status of national minorities is carried out and an analysis of the situation of national minorities in the labour market is conducted while taking into account real and declarative indicators of the level of employment, which were determined by the author's survey and field experiment. It has been proven that discrimination in the labour market is characteristic of certain, but not all, groups of national minorities, in particular, the Roma. It is believed that the efficiency of the labour market of national minorities also affects tax revenues and the distribution of social costs. Ensuring equal opportunities for these groups contributes to the creation of stable social conditions, reducing the costs of social assistance and increasing the efficiency of social capital. The study of the labour market of national minorities also takes into account the importance of socio-economic stability. The main causes of discrimination of representatives of ethno-national groups in the labour market are singled out, and economic and legal measures to stimulate inclusion in the labour market are defined. Through the author's survey and the field method of fictitious questionnaires, the discrimination of certain groups of national minorities in Ukraine, among them Moldovans and especially the Roma, was proven, and it was proved that the unemployment rate in the region provokes an almost proportional decrease in the number of responses from employers from representatives of national minorities. The field of employment was not a significant factor in indicating certain features of discrimination based on the field of the labour market.

Ovarian cancer (OC) is one of the most prevalent types of cancer in women. Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial for the survival of the patients. However, the majority of women are diagnosed in advanced stages due to the lack of effective biomarkers and accurate screening tools. While previous studies sought a common biomarker, our study suggests different biomarkers for the premenopausal and postmenopausal populations. This can provide a new perspective in the search for novel predictors for the effective diagnosis of OC. Genetic algorithm has been utilized to identify the most significant biomarkers. The XGBoost classifier is then trained on the selected features and high ROC-AUC scores of 0.864 and 0.911 have been obtained for the premenopausal and postmenopausal populations, respectively. Lack of explainability is one major limitation of current AI systems. The stochastic nature of the ML algorithms raises concerns about the reliability of the system as it is difficult to interpret the reasons behind the decisions. To increase the trustworthiness and accountability of the diagnostic system as well as to provide transparency and explanations behind the predictions, explainable AI has been incorporated into the ML framework. SHAP is employed to quantify the contributions of the selected biomarkers and determine the most discriminative features. Merging SHAP with the ML models enables clinicians to investigate individual decisions made by the model and gain insights into the factors leading to that prediction. Thus, a hybrid decision support system has been established that can eliminate the bottlenecks caused by the black-box nature of the ML algorithms providing a safe and trustworthy AI tool. The diagnostic accuracy obtained from the proposed system outperforms the existing methods as well as the state-of-the-art ROMA algorithm by a substantial margin which signifies its potential to be an effective tool in the differential diagnosis of OC.

The paper proposes a semiotic analysis of Cityscapes by Valeriana Berchicci, a digital museum of memory of Rome hosted on a permanent and interactive online platform that maps the city through oral narratives collected by the artist and the users themselves. The goal is to test whether the digital platform placed at the service of the museum-archive can constitute a qualitatively innovative way of musealization and memory reprocessing. At the heart of the project is the relationship between representation of urban space, memory and artistic practice, investigated in particular from the perspective of the concepts of museum and his objects, spatial and temporal coordinates, the use of voice in a figurative way, and the intersubjective dimension.

- Abstract
Baetylos or baitylos is the general name given to roughly shaped stones that are considered sacred or worshipped as being of divine origin. The concept of baetylos, which is said to derive from the Semitic word beth-el - the house of the god, is mentioned in Ancient Greek and Latin sources as well. The omphalos at Delphi, Cybele Stone at Pessinus, Aphrodite Stone at Paphos and the baetylos in the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus are examples of baetyloi that were considered sacred. In the city of Emesa there was a baetylos belonging to the sun god El-Gabal. One of the priests of this god was Bassianus, later known as the emperor Elagabalus. After Bassianus became the emperor in 218 AD, he took this baetylos with him to Rome. During his short reign from 218 to 222, Elagabalus tried to include the sun god of Emesa in the Roman Pantheon and even equated him with Jupiter/Zeus, but he was met with a reaction of both the public and the Senate. In 222 he was dethroned and murdered, and with his death the baetylos was returned to Emesa. The coins of the Asia Minor cities such as Anazarbos, Hierapolis-Castabala, Iuliopolis, Prusias ad Hypium, Ephesus and Hierapolis show the scene of the transportation of the Emesa Stone to Rome. Also in Colybrassos, a coin minted during the reign of Elagabalus shows a baetylos in an ornate temple. This paper will discuss whether this baetylos was connected with the transportation of the Emesa Stone to Rome. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

After 1948, Czechoslovak communist elites were intently focused on the issue of population growth. In the post-war period, Czechoslovakia's population significantly decreased as a result of the expulsion of the German population from the frontier territories of the Czech and Moravia areas. However, the Slovak territory saw much smaller deviations, with higher marriage and birth rates than the overall Czechoslovak average. My aim in this paper is to show the contribution of specific local circumstances in Slovakia and the approach of Czechoslovak communists to the population behaviour trends of the Roma inhabitants in this region. NEOLIBERALISM ,RACISM in public welfare ,ROMANIES ,SOCIAL systems - Abstract
The article examines how neoliberal reforms can pave the way for welfare racialisation, turning a delegitimised minimum-income scheme into a tool for racial-hierarchy enforcement. We follow the development of Czech minimum-income scheme legislation from 2014 to 2021, after a series of neoliberal (workfarist) reforms reinforced the restrictive and controlling aspects of the system. The analysed period is characterised by the greater involvement of politicians representing the poorest regions of the Czech Republic and by calls for further restrictions. Analysing parliamentary debates from this period, we show that the delegitimised social system is no longer understood as a tool of social protection or even labour market inclusion; rather, it has become a tool of ethnic hierarchisation, which particularly resonates in the context of perceived socioeconomic insecurity. We propose the term 'post-neoliberal ethnic welfare' to describe this emerging system, which derives its legitimacy from neoliberal categories of deservingness and reduces social-protection systems into a performative tool of control over the Roma population. SOLIDARITY , *COLLECTIVE action , *SOCIAL action , *DISCOURSE , *POLITICAL endorsements , *SOCIAL change , *SOCIAL context - Abstract
The way politicians talk about minorities institutes the normative context of intergroup relations. We investigated how endorsement of different political discourses predicts donation and collective action intentions by majority members toward the Roma in five European countries. The survey was conducted online using samples demographically similar to the populations of Hungary, Slovakia, Romania, France, and Ireland (N = 5,054). First, results showed that accepting paternalistic discourse versus discourse promoting allyship were not distinguishable; both promoted higher moral inclusion which in turn predicted higher prosocial intentions. Second, donations (i.e., immediate relief) and collective action (i.e., social change action) were driven by identical factors. Third, acceptance of openly hostile political discourse neither predicted moral exclusion, nor lower prosocial intentions. In summary, our research provides important evidence that when it comes to Roma—non‐Roma relations, the previously established distinction between solidarity intentions that aim to solidify status relations versus bring about social change is completely blurred, presumably because of the social context in which any positive message communicates moral inclusion challenging the hostile status quo. Interethnic romantic relationships can be perceived as indicators of integration, but they can also be facilitators of successful social integration. This is why we considered it important to study Roma people who had already had a non-Roma partner. We were looking for answers to the question of what is characteristic of these people compared to those who have only been in a romantic relationship or marriage with a Roma partner throughout their lives. In our study, we investigated the correlations using a Khi2 test and decision tree analysis on a sample of 535 Roma people in Hungary. Among the sociodemographic characteristics, gender, marital status, actual relationship status, educational attainment, belonging to a Roma community (Romungro, Olah, Boyash), occupation and settlement type were significantly associated with whether Roma respondents had ever had a non-Roma partner. Roma people with less than eight years of primary education had the most homogeneous partner choice habits. Roma people with more than eight years of education, unmarried, cohabiting with their partner or not living with their partner had had non-Roma partners in the highest proportion. As educational attainment increases, it can be assumed that more and more Roma-non-Roma romantic relationships and marriages will be formed in Hungary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is a systematic review of studies on the situation of Eastern European Roma. It examines themes of community, identity, and mobility published in the literature between 2002 and 2022 in the social science, law, and education fields. Studies were identified methodically by searching multidisciplinary electronic databases and hand searching. The studies found were imported into Mendeley, and titles and abstracts were screened according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. A list of search terms with SKOS descriptors (thesaurus) was generated to cover the relevant topics. A data extraction table was drawn up with a set of fields for each of the studies. Items included bibliographic information, study type, study characteristics, participant characteristics, variables, main findings, and limitations. The database searches yielded a total of 6577 records. After an individual hand-search review of the texts, a total of 14 studies were considered and included. We concluded that very little research has been done on the central themes of the study. In addition, there are no texts that look in depth at the issue of education as a tool for poverty reduction.
