The purpose of this paper is to empirically investigate whether certain exchange rate arrangements are more prone to currency crises using a probit model. We define a currency crisis as a period characterised by the presence of intense foreign exchange market pressure. The definition is based on a foreign exchange market pressure index (MPI). If the value of the MPI is above a certain threshold, we define that period as a crisis state; otherwise the period is defined as a tranquil state. The definition of currency crises used in this paper focuses on discrete events.Keywords. Exchange rate regimes, currency crises, speculative attacks.JEL. F10, F31, F32.

The aim of this article is to assess whether a fiscal sustainability indicator (FSI) can be used as an early warning indicator for predicting the probability that a currency crisis occurs. Using the FSI developed by Croce and Juan-Ramón (2003) and two different definitions of currency crisis, a probit model is estimated. The results suggest that the lagged FSI has an explanatory power over currency crises in a selection of countries.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the sixth most prevalent cancer in the world, but metastatic disease to the heart is rare. We present a case of a 63-year-old man with history of hepatitis C and cirrhosis, which had progressed to HCC. The patient had undergone two prior liver transplantations. He presented to the hospital complaining of worsening lower extremity edema. His exam was also pertinent for jugular venous distension, a 3/6 crescendo-decrescendo murmur, and hepatosplenomegaly. A transthoracic echocardiogram showed a large irregular lobulated mass in the apex of the right ventricle with a mobile pedunculated component. An MRI of the heart revealed a 4.4 × 3.4 × 4.0 cm mass within the right ventricular apex, which was subsequently biopsied and found to be moderately differentiated HCC with myocardial fragments. The patient opted out of any further therapy, or intervention, and was enrolled in hospice care.

This paper attempts to provide a comprehensive overview on the theoretical and empirical analysis of the selection and assessment of exchange rate regimes. The literature can be divided into two main groups: classical and modern. The first group refers to earlier studies examining the differences between floating and fixed exchange rate regimes. The second group is focused on the trade-off between credibility and flexibility, the economic performance and currency crisis, among others. In addition, this paper reviews why many countries follow de facto regimes different from their de jure regimes. Este artículo pretende dar una visión general sobre el análisis teórico y empírico de la selección y evaluación de los regímenes cambiarios. La literatura se puede dividir en dos grupos principales: clásicos y modernos. El primer grupo se refiere a los primeros estudios que analizan las diferencias entre los regímenes de tipo de cambio fijo y flotante. El segundo grupo se centra en el trade-off entre credibilidad y flexibilidad, el desempeño económico y las crisis cambiarías, entre otros. Además, este documento analiza por qué muchos países siguen un régimen cambiario de facto, diferente a su régimen de jure.

In this paper we evaluate the fiscal sustainability of the Dominican Republic using the recursive algorithm proposed by Croce and Juan-Ramón (2003). The results indicate that the Dominican economy shows an unsustainable fiscal position in much of the period, but for the years 2014-2016 would be conducting a fiscal policy that is consistent with the convergence of the debt-to-GDP ratio to sustainable levels as required by PNPSP and END.

La esclerosis sistémica es una conectivopatía crónica, multisistémica, con un amplio espectro de manifestaciones clínicas y cuya morbimortalidadestá determinada por el grado de compromiso visceral. La patogenia es desconocida, pero se plantea una interacción entre factores genéticospredisponentes y desencadenantes ambientales.Su presentación clínica más frecuente es la conocida como Síndrome de CREST, acrónimo de calcinosis, fenómeno de Raynaud, trastornode motilidad esofágica, esclerodactilia y teleangiectasias(según sus siglas en inglés), pero también puede tener complicaciones a nivel renal, pulmonar y endocrinológico, por citar algunos.Finalmente, debido a que no hay una terapia curativa, el tratamiento va orientado a inmunomoduladores y manejo de las complicaciones.

Large sized outflow channels like a Kasei Valles were argued well about their formation processes. Therefore we targeted Hebrus Valles and and Hephaestus Fossae as small sized outflow channels, and argued about their formation processes by estimating their discharge. We developed a simple method to calculate parameters necessary to estimate the discharge. This paper examines the determinants of speculative attacks that occurred recently in the Dominican Republic, and proposes a series of indicators to serve as an early warning system for identifying vulnerable periods. The estimates were made using monthly data covering the period between January 1996 and June 2008. The results show that the proposed indicators have the ability to reasonably explain and predict the existence of a speculative attack.

In this paper we apply different methods to calculate the potential output of the Dominican Republic. The estimates were made using two data sets. First, we use a quarterly data set covering the period 1980-2006 and then an annual data set for the period 1950-2006 is used. The results of the estimates for each method are compared based on growth rates and generate correlations between them. Growth rates are similar and found a high correlation between the different methods used. For the period 1950-2006 the country's potential output was around 4.8%, while for the period 1980-2006 it was around 4.0%. Additionally, these results allow for calculation the gap between actual and potential output.

This paper has provided an empirical evidence to support the existence of the Phillips curve in the case of the Dominican Republic. The Phillips curve is estimated using data over the last forty years and includes a role for supply factors. The most striking feature of the model is the strong relationship between inflation and excess demand.
