Neutron-induced reaction cross sections of short-lived nuclei are imperative to understand the origin of heavy elements in stellar nucleosynthesis and for societal applications, but their measurement is extremely complicated due to the radioactivity of the targets involved. One way of overcoming this issue is to combine surrogate reactions with the unique possibilities offered by heavy-ion storage rings. In this work, we describe the first surrogate-reaction experiment in inverse kinematics, which we successfully conducted at the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) of the GSI/FAIR facility, using the 208Pb(p,p') reaction as a surrogate for neutron capture on 207Pb. Thanks to the outstanding detection efficiencies possible at the ESR, we were able to measure for the first time the neutron-emission probability as a function of the excitation energy of 208Pb. We have used this probability to select different descriptions of the gamma-ray strength function and nuclear level density, and provide reliable results for the neutron-induced radiative capture cross section of 207Pb at energies for which no experimental data exist., Comment: 10 pages and 5 figures

We report intriguing and hitherto overlooked low-field room temperature extremely large magnetoresistance (XMR) patterns in graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) superlattices that emerge due to the existence of open orbits within each miniband. This finding is set against the backdrop of the experimental discovery of the Hofstadter butterfly in moir superlattices, which has sparked considerable interest in the fractal quantum Hall regime. To cope with the challenge of deciphering the low magnetic field dynamics of moir minibands, we utilize a novel semi-classical calculation method, grounded in zero-field Fermi contours, to predict the nontrivial behavior of the Landau-level spectrum. This is compared with fully quantum simulations, enabling an in-depth and contrasted analysis of transport measurements in high-quality graphene-hBN superlattices. Our results not only highlight the primary observation of the open-orbit induced XMR in this system but also shed new light on other intricate phenomena. These include the nuances of single miniband dynamics, evident through Lifshitz transitions, and the complex interplay of semiclassical and quantum effects between these minibands. Specifically, we document transport anomalies linked to trigonal warping, a semiclassical deviation from the expected linear characteristics of Landau levels, and magnetic breakdown phenomena indicative of quantum tunneling, all effects jointly contributing to the intricacies of a rich electronic landscape uncovered at low magnetic fields., Comment: 5 figures

Transmission spectroscopy is a proven technique to study a transiting exoplanet's atmosphere. However, stellar surface inhomogeneities, spots and faculae, alter the observed transmission spectra: the stellar contamination effect. The variable nature of the stellar activity also makes it difficult to stitch together multi-epoch observations and evaluate any potential variability in the exoplanet's atmosphere. This paper introduces SAGE, a tool to correct for the time-dependent impact of stellar activity on transmission spectra. It uses a pixelation approach to model the stellar surface with spots and faculae, while fully accounting for limb-darkening and rotational line-broadening. The current version is designed for low to medium-resolution spectra. We used SAGE to evaluate stellar contamination for F to M-type hosts, testing various spot sizes and locations, and quantify the impact of limb-darkening. We find that limb-darkening enhances the importance of the spot location on the stellar disk, with spots close to the disk center impacting the transmission spectra more strongly than spots near the limb. Moreover, due to the chromaticity of limb darkening, the shape of the contamination spectrum is also altered. Additionally, SAGE can be used to retrieve the properties and distribution of active regions on the stellar surface from photometric monitoring. We demonstrate this for WASP-69 using TESS data, finding that two spots at mid-latitudes and a combined coverage fraction of $\sim$1% are favoured. SAGE allows us to connect the photometric variability to the stellar contamination of transmission spectra, enhancing our ability to jointly interpret transmission spectra obtained at different epochs., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Interconnect materials with ultralow dielectric constant, and good thermal and mechanical properties are crucial for the further miniaturization of electronic devices. Recently, it has been demonstrated that ultrathin amorphous boron nitride (aBN) films have a very low dielectric constant, high density (above 2.1 g/cm3), high thermal stability, and mechanical properties. The excellent properties of aBN derive from the nature and degree of disorder, which can be controlled at fabrication, allowing tuning of the physical properties for desired applications. Here, we report an improvement in the stability and mechanical properties of amorphous boron nitride upon hydrogen doping. With the introduction of a Gaussian approximation potential (GAP) for atomistic simulations, we investigate the changing morphology of amorphous boron nitride with varying H doping concentrations. We found that for 8 at% of H doping, the concentration of $sp^3$-hybridized atoms reaches a maximum which leads to an improvement of thermal stability and mechanical properties by 20%. These results will be a guideline for experimentalists and process engineers to tune the growth conditions of amorphous boron nitride films for numerous applications., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures

Topological quantum matter exhibits novel transport phenomena driven by entanglement between internal degrees of freedom, as for instance generated by spin-orbit coupling effects. Here we report on a direct connection between the mechanism driving spin relaxation and the intertwined dynamics between spin and sublattice degrees of freedom in disordered graphene. Beyond having a direct observable consequence, such intraparticle entanglement is shown to be resilient to disorder, pointing towards a novel resource for quantum information processing.

We report on exceptionally long spin transport and giant spin lifetime anisotropy in the gapped surface states of three-dimensional (3D) magnetic topological insulators (MTIs). We examine the properties of these states using the Fu-Kane-Mele Hamiltonian in presence of a magnetic exchange field. The corresponding spin textures of surface states, which are well reproduced by an effective two-band model, hint at a considerable enhancement of the lifetime of out-of-plane spins compared to in-plane spins. This is confirmed by large-scale spin transport simulations for 3D MTIs with disorder. The energy dependence of the spin lifetime anisotropy arises directly from the nontrivial spin texture of the surface states, and is correlated with the onset of the quantum anomalous Hall phase. Our findings suggest novel spin filtering capabilities of the gapped surface MTI states, which could be explored by Hanle spin precession measurements., Comment: Any feedback is appreciated

We use JWST/MIRI MRS spectroscopy of a sample of six local obscured type 1.9/2 active galactic nuclei (AGN) to compare their nuclear mid-IR absorption bands with the level of nuclear obscuration traced by X-rays. This study is the first to use sub-arcsecond angular resolution data of local obscured AGN to investigate the nuclear mid-IR absorption bands with a wide wavelength coverage (4.9-28.1 $\mu$m). All the nuclei show the 9.7 $\mu$m silicate band in absorption. We compare the strength of the 9.7 and 18 $\mu$m silicate features with torus model predictions. The observed silicate features are generally well explained by clumpy and smooth torus models. We report the detection of the 6 $\mu$m dirty water ice band (i.e., a mix of water and other molecules such as CO and CO$_2$) at sub-arcsecond scales ($\sim$0.26 arcsec at 6 $\mu$m; inner $\sim$50 pc) in a sample of local AGN with different levels of nuclear obscuration in the range log N$_{\rm H}^{\rm X-Ray}$(cm$^{-2}$)$\sim22-25$. We find a good correlation between the 6 $\mu$m water ice optical depths and N$_{\rm H}^{\rm X-Ray}$. This result indicates that the water ice absorption might be a reliable tracer of the nuclear intrinsic obscuration in AGN. The weak water ice absorption in less obscured AGN (log N$_H^{X-ray}$ (cm$^{-2}$)$\lesssim$23.0 cm$^{-2}$) might be related to the hotter dust temperature ($>$T$_{sub}^{H_2O}\sim$110 K) expected to be reached in the outer layers of the torus due to their more inhomogeneous medium. Our results suggest it might be necessary to include the molecular content, such as, H$_2$O, aliphatic hydrocarbons (CH-) and more complex PAH molecules in torus models to better constrain key parameters such as the torus covering factor (i.e. nuclear obscuration)., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 13 pages, 12 Figures

We report a theoretical description of novel spin-orbit torque components emerging in two-dimensional Dirac materials with broken inversion symmetry. In contrast to usual metallic interfaces where field-like and damping-like torque components are competing, we find that an intrinsic damping-like torque which derives from all Fermi-sea electrons can be simultaneously enhanced along with the field-like component. Additionally, hitherto overlooked torque components unique to Dirac materials, emerge from the coupling between spin and pseudospin degrees of freedom. These torques are found to be resilient to disorder and could enhance the magnetic switching performance of nearby magnets.
