In white grapes, chlorophylls and carotenoids play important roles in berry color and environmental interactions (e.g. radiative stresses). In this paper, easy, fast and low cost non-invasive reflectance methods have been tested and developed. Previously published indexes showed good performances for chlorophyll quantifications. However, in this work, new formulas able to discriminate chlorophylls a and b were also proposed. The wavelengths of major interest for the absorption detection were identified. Formulas based on the Gaussians half heights were proposed. In general, chlorophyll quantifications were obtained directly from reflectance spectra, while carotenoid absorption bands did not allow good reflectance correlations. However, the chlorophyll/carotenoid ratio (due to the pigments physiological linked roles) could be used to estimate carotenoid content. Their proportion changes during berry development, thus the index coefficients should be adapted in relation to the BBCH phenological phase. The obtained indexes demonstrated good correlations with the destructive quantifications. These methods could support further researches concerning cultivar classification and physiological studies., VITIS - Journal of Grapevine Research, Vol. 55 No. 1 (2016): Vitis

- Abstract
Objectives: The aim of our study was to assess the results of antegrade percutaneous intramedullary Kirschner wire (K-wire) fixation, for the treatment of unstable displaced metacarpal fractures in a large number of cases, in order to support the usage of this mini-invasive technique in the largest variety of fractures as possible. Material and Methods: Every patient meeting the inclusion criteria was treated with closed reduction and antegrade intramedullary fixation with 1 or 2 K-wire from January 2013. A total of 150 patients with 165 metacarpal fractures were evaluated until February 2016. Average follow-up duration was 10 weeks. The clinical outcome was assessed by the total active motion of the digit, presence of rotational deformity, Quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (Q-DASH) score, and Patient-Rated Wrist/Hand Evaluation (PRWHE) score. The radiographic outcome was assessed by evaluating the dorsal angulation and shortening of the metacarpal, comparing the postoperative radiography and the first radiography showing fracture healing. Results: Comparing the injured and contralateral digit average total active motion after 10 weeks from surgery, no statistical significance emerged. No patient developed extensor tendon irritation, so that there was no need to perform tenolysis, ever. The average Quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand score was 12.3 (range, 0 to 37). The average Patient-Rated Wrist/Hand Evaluation score was 19 (range, 0 to 41). Fracture union was steadily achieved. Radiographic assessment showed a nonsignificant postoperative loss of reduction. Conclusions: Antegrade intramedullary K-wire fixation technique is valid, reproducible, cheap, and perfectly suited to the treatment of metacarpal fractures requiring surgery, providing immediate mobilization and excellent outcomes for a very wide variety of fractures.

The recent policy of Green Deal aims to a transition towards ‘healthy, equitable and sustainable communities’. One of the key sectors analysed within the Green Deal is the agri-food chain, with the strategy ‘From Farm to Fork’, aiming to design a sustainable food system from production to consumption, passing through industry processing, distribution, and all the related activities. For the agricultural sector, the objectives are in line with those presented in the United Nations 2030 Agenda, from technologies and digitalization, to organic farming. Concerning the transformation and distribution phases, the Commission is promoting the technological and technical innovation, the restructuring of companies and the improvement of the quality of work. The aim of this study is to perform a Life Cycle Assessment related to one of the main products of a company in the agri-food sector in central Italy. The product analysed was durum wheat pasta. A cradle-to-gate analysis was performed, starting from the cultivation of the wheat, arriving at the final pasta product. Different transformation steps were evaluated (e.g., cleaning, grinding, compression, extrusion). The analysis was aimed to identify the most critical phases along the chain, to plan improvements in terms of efficiency of the production process, with consequent enhancement of the environmental performance.

Body lean response to bilateral vibrations of soleus muscles were investigated in order to understand the influence of proprioceptive input from lower leg in human stance control. Proprioceptive stimulation was applied to 17 healthy subjects by two vibrators placed on the soleus muscles. Frequency and amplitude of vibration were 60 Hz and 1 mm, respectively. Vibration was applied after a 30 s of baseline. The vibration duration of 10, 20, 30 s respectively was used with following 30 s rest. Subjects stood on the force platform with eyes closed. Postural responses were characterized by center of pressure (CoP) displacements in the anterior-posterior (AP) direction. The CoP-AP shifts as well as their amplitudes and velocities were analyzed before, during and after vibration. Vibration of soleus muscles gradually increased backward body tilts. There was a clear dependence of the magnitude of final CoP shift on the duration of vibration. The amplitude and velocity of body sway increased during vibration and amplitude was significantly modulated by duration of vibration as well. Comparison of amplitude and velocity of body sway before and after vibration showed significant post-effects. Presented findings showed that somatosensory stimulation has a long-term, direction-specific influence on the control of postural orientation during stance. Further, the proprioceptive input altered by soleus muscles vibration showed significant changes in postural equilibrium during period of vibration with interesting post-effects also.

To verify whether it is possible, in people with diabetes mellitus (DM) considered at very high cardiovascular (CV) risk, stratify this risk better and identify significant modifiable risk factor (including lifestyle habits) to help patients and clinicians improve CV prevention. People with DM and microvascular diseases or one or more CV risk factors (hypertension, hyperlipidemia, smoking, poor dietary habits, overweight, physical inactivity) included in the Risk and Prevention study were selected. We considered the combined endpoint of non-fatal acute myocardial infarction and stroke and CV death. A multivariate Cox proportional analysis was carried out to identify relevant predictors. We also used the RECPAM method to identify subgroups of patients at higher risk. In our study, the rate of major CV events was lower than expected (5 % in 5 years). Predictors of CV events were age, male, sex, heart failure, previous atherosclerotic disease, atrial fibrillation, insulin treatment, high HbA1c, heart rate and other CV diseases while being physically active was protective. RECPAM analysis indicated that history of atherosclerotic diseases and a low BMI defined worse prognosis (HR 4.51 95 % CI 3.04–6.69). Among subjects with no previous atherosclerotic disease, men with HbA1c more than 8 % were at higher CV risk (HR 2.77; 95 % CI 1.86–4.14) with respect to women. In this population, the rate of major CV events was lower than expected. This prediction model could help clinicians identify people with DM at higher CV risk and support them in achieving goals of physical activity and HbA1c.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation-evoked electroencephalography potentials (TEPs) have been used to study motor cortical excitability in healthy subjects and several neurological conditions. However, optimal recording parameters for TEPs are still debated. Stimulation rates could affect TEP amplitude due to plasticity effects, thus confounding the assessment of cortical excitability. We tested whether short interpulse intervals (IPIs) affect TEP amplitude.

Erwinia amylovora ,diagnosi precoce ,composti volatili ,NASO ELETTRONICO - Abstract

Eczema is one of the most common chronic inflammatory skin diseases, affecting about 20% of children. The pathogenic mechanisms of eczema are still not fully understood, and current treatment of moderate-severe eczema is often difficult. Recently, it has been suggested that Vitamin D plays a key role in this disease, even if mechanisms are only partially known. The purpose of our study was to assess the 25-Hydroxyvitamin D serum levels in a pediatric population suffering from chronic eczema (IgE-mediated and non-IgE-mediated), and to correlate these phenotypes with the SCORAD severity and selected clinical and biological parameters. Moreover, we aimed to evaluate whether a supplementation of Vitamin D3 could affect the same clinical and laboratory parameters.89 children with chronic eczema were enrolled in the study. Severity of eczema was assessed with the SCORAD index. Past and present history was taken, and patients were divided into two groups according to the state of sensitization. According to a randomization schedule, the enrolled children were assigned to the following groups: supplementation group, which received a daily oral Vitamin D3 supplementation (2000 IUs) for 3 months; control group which received no supplementation.Vitamin D concentrations in patients with moderate and severe eczema were not statistically different from Vitamin D concentration detected in the serum of patients with mild eczema. Furthermore, we did not find any correlation between Vitamin D levels, total IgEs and SCORAD index, both in the Sensitized and in the Not-Sensitized group. The Vitamin D3 supplementation did not influence the SCORAD severity or the total IgEs concentration. To our knowledge, our study is the first one that shows no correlation between serum levels of Vitamin D, eczema severity and IgE sensitization in a pediatric population suffering from chronic eczema.

The use of green roofs is demonstrated to improve the energy performance of buildings, increase biodiversity, reduce environmental impacts of urban areas, and mitigate climate change phenomena. Their use on a large scale is desirable in the coming years. Still, the choice of the most suitable green roof design solution should also consider the impacts of their production. Within this study, the Life Cycle Assessment methodology was used to evaluate the environmental impact of a particular typology of soil-less green roofs ideated by an Italian company. In this lightweight green roof, the growing medium is replaced by recycled felt layers, filtration is guaranteed by geotextile, and a closed-loop sub-irrigation system fertilises the pre-growth lawn placed on the top. The extremely low weight of this system suggests an optimal use in building retrofitting scenarios, but its environmental implication was not known. The environmental impact of this product has been assessed with an attributional cradle-to-gate approach through four different methodologies (ReCiPe midpoint and endpoint H V1.1, Ecological footprint V1.01, and IPCC 2013 GWP 100y V1.0) using the ecoinvent v3, Agri-footprint 1.0, and ELCD database on the SimaPro 8.4.4.0 software. The IPCC method has shown a Global Warming Potential of 7.66 kg of CO2 eq. for 1 m2 of Pratotetto® green roof; however, the reuse of waste materials from the textile industry must be considered.

Safflower is currently primarily cultivated as an industrial crop for its oil, which is used for food and industrial purposes, while the by-products can be used for animal feeding. Traditionally cultivated in the Mediterranean area, it was abandoned in the past for other oil crops, such as sunflower. However, it is now returning to be interesting due to its adaptability to low-input cultivation practices, especially when sown in autumn. The main aim of this study is to present a Life Cycle Inventory of safflower grown in a Southern European country, i.e. Italy, based on primary data on agricultural practices used in this country. The study was carried out following ISO 14040 and ISO 14044. Data were collected from experimental fields of the University of Perugia, to ensure a specific and accurate data collection for the definition of the complete supply chain. The reference unit of this study was defined as 1 ha. The stages from raw materials production to seed harvesting were considered. The data presented will be useful to increase the existing knowledge of safflower production in other Mediterranean countries.

The problem of Climate Change and the related issues of greenhouse emissions, and energy consumption are among the most debated topics nowadays at international level. It is essential to find viable solutions also in the agri-food sector, moving towards production processes that were more sustainable, energy saver, and possibly follow a circular economy approach. The Circular Economy is not fully a brand-new concept, as it is based on a combination of fundamental and founding concepts such as Industrial Ecology, Regenerative Design, Natural Capitalism, Cradle to Cradle approach and Blue Economy. However, the novelty is in the attention that this concept is gaining among business practitioners, consultancy firms, governments, NGOs and associations, and academics. The aim of this study is to perform a Life Cycle Assessment related to one of the main products of a company of the agri-food sector in central Italy. The product analysed was fresh sausage and the functional unit considered was 100 kg of fresh sausage. The analysis was performed in order to identify the environmental impacts caused by the different transformation processes along the product life cycle, to highlight the critical phases and to plan improvements in terms of efficiency of the production process, with consequent improvement of the environmental performance. Particular attention was paid to the transport and to the energy consumption phases.

Food wastage is a complex global issue. Its solution requires a multi-pronged effort and the use of diversified strategies. Since the impacts are on an environmental, social and economic level, solutions can take shape in one of these areas, knowing that there are often trade-offs between one and the other. This paper aims to evaluate the net environmental effects in terms of Carbon footprint of the activities of the Lithuanian Food Bank (Maisto Bankas). Food banks are charities that work to reduce the negative social effects associated with food waste and food insecurity. They work on the food recovery, avoiding the transformation of food surplus in food waste. The present paper assessed the positive impact generated by the Lithuanian Food Bank thanks to its activities as the non-impact of recovered food and the non-disposal of food in landfills. At the same time, also the negative impact in term of emission due to the management of all its activities has been estimated. The net impact has been derived by the comparison of the two flows. The results of the study proved that, behind the social benefit, the Food Banks, as Maisto Bankas, produce also a net positive environmental impact.

This work evaluates the impact of cultivating Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) in marginal lands of the Umbrian territory (Italy) to produce oil. The analysis considers the entire production process, aiming to understand which are the most impacting factors. In particular, the work assesses the environmental savings deriving from the reuse of the main by-product of the oil extraction process, i.e. the cake, for animal feed purposes. The evaluation was carried out by means of a cradle-to-gate LCA. The results show that the greatest impacts are due to the crop fertilization. However, such an impact is almost completely compensated by the use of the cake in feed production.

- Abstract
Purpose: Nerve gap injuries may be associated with lesions in other structures, like tendons or bones; in these cases, it is common to plan a second surgery to improve functional recovery. Since macroscopic observations of nerve regeneration in humans are rare, we exploited these second surgeries for the purpose of studying nerve regeneration in humans. Methods: We assessed the clinical outcomes of 50 implants of collagen-based nerve guides in the upper limb. We performed a second look at 20, assessing macroscopically both nerve regeneration and collagen degradation. Results and Conclusions: Pain was never recorded in these patients. An adequate sensory recovery took place whenever nerve regeneration was found inside the guide. Motor recovery seemed to occur only when the gap lesion was shorter than 10 mm. The degree of degradation appeared to be variable and was not directly correlated with time; we hypothesize that it could be associated with the site of implantation. Such a large number of second looks in humans has never been previously reported in the literature.

Background Trials have shown a beneficial effect of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in patients with a previous myocardial infarction or heart failure. We evaluated the potential benefit of such therapy in patients with multiple cardiovascular risk factors or atherosclerotic vascular disease who had not had a myocardial infarction. Methods In this double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, we enrolled a cohort of patients who were followed by a network of 860 general practitioners in Italy. Eligible patients were men and women with multiple cardiovascular risk factors or atherosclerotic vascular disease but not myocardial infarction. Patients were randomly assigned to n-3 fatty acids (1 g daily) or placebo (olive oil). The initially specified primary end point was the cumulative rate of death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, and nonfatal stroke. At 1 year, after the event rate was found to be lower than anticipated, the primary end point was revised as time to death from cardiovascular causes or admission to the hospital for cardiovascular causes. Results Of the 12,513 patients enrolled, 6244 were randomly assigned to n-3 fatty acids and 6269 to placebo. With a median of 5 years of follow-up, the primary end point occurred in 1478 of 12,505 patients included in the analysis (11.8%), of whom 733 of 6239 (11.7%) had received n-3 fatty acids and 745 of 6266 (11.9%) had received placebo (adjusted hazard ratio with n-3 fatty acids, 0.97; 95% confidence interval, 0.88 to 1.08; P=0.58). The same null results were observed for all the secondary end points. Conclusions In a large general-practice cohort of patients with multiple cardiovascular risk factors, daily treatment with n-3 fatty acids did not reduce cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. Payments to the agricultural sector are designated to decrease gradually. One of the consequences of such a process will be a reduction in the number of farms and thereby in the defence of territory. The expansion of areas with hydro geological problems is a global matter. During the 2011 the damage caused by disasters around the world cost 380 BILIONS of USD. For the future, it is possible to suppose an increase in extreme events and disasters of hydro geological nature, also because of a reduction in territory protection by agriculture. The objective of this study is to propose an instrument to involve farmers in territory management, but before that disasters happen. We are looking for an ex-ante solution. In the paper, we propose a potential model, that of Territorial Management Contracts (TMC).
