111. Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible: impacto de la falta de protección financiera en salud en países de América Latina y el Caribe

Abstract

Objetivo. Determinar el impacto del gasto de bolsillo en salud en los hogares, los niveles de protección financiera y su desigualdad según variables relevantes en países de la Región. Se indaga su evolución y relación con el uso de servicios del sistema de salud. Métodos. Se recopila información descriptiva comparada acerca del gasto de bolsillo, su incidencia en la población, y su peso y composición en el consumo de los hogares. Se presentan indicadores de protección financiera en el nivel nacional y su distribución por quintiles de consumo total de hogares y por género. Se contrastan con un indicador de cobertura de servicios. Resultados. Los indicadores de gasto de bolsillo y protección financiera son deficientes pero diferenciados entre los países. Se identifica la composición del gasto en salud para un subgrupo de ellos y existen gradientes significativos cuando se estudian las desigualdades. Para algunos casos, se muestran cambios en el tiempo y posibles asociaciones con los niveles de cobertura de servicios. Discusión. La desprotección financiera afecta a una gran parte de la población, se configuran grupos de países con dificultades mayores que otros, con preponderancia de gasto en medicamentos y exposición mayor de grupos en situaciones de vulnerabilidad, como los más pobres y las mujeres, lo que denota una gran inequidad. Se identifican políticas de algunos países que pueden asociarse con la evolución de la protección financiera. Para reemplazar el gasto de bolsillo, barrera para el acceso, los países necesitan aumentar el gasto público mediante el financiamiento de los sistemas de salud en transformación hacia la salud universal.

Abstract

Background: The coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic significantly affected management of cardiovascular disease around the world. The effect of the pandemic on volume of cardiovascular diagnostic procedures is not known. Objectives: This study sought to evaluate the effects of the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic on cardiovascular diagnostic procedures and safety practices in Asia. Methods: The International Atomic Energy Agency conducted a worldwide survey to assess changes in cardiovascular procedure volume and safety practices caused by COVID-19. Testing volumes were reported for March 2020 and April 2020 and were compared to those from March 2019. Data from 180 centers across 33 Asian countries were grouped into 4 subregions for comparison. Results: Procedure volumes decreased by 47% from March 2019 to March 2020, showing recovery from March 2020 to April 2020 in Eastern Asia, particularly in China. The majority of centers cancelled outpatient activities and increased time per study. Practice changes included implementing physical distancing and restricting visitors. Although COVID testing was not commonly performed, it was conducted in one-third of facilities in Eastern Asia. The most severe reductions in procedure volumes were observed in lower-income countries, where volumes decreased 81% from March 2019 to April 2020. Conclusions: The COVID-19 pandemic in Asia caused significant reductions in cardiovascular diagnostic procedures, particularly in low-income countries. Further studies on effects of COVID-19 on cardiovascular outcomes and changes in care delivery are warranted.

Abstract

BRIKEN is a complex detection system to be installed at the RIB-facility of the RIKEN Nishina Center. It is aimed at the detection of heavy-ion implants, $\beta$-particles, $\gamma$-rays and $\beta$-delayed neutrons. The whole detection setup involves the Advanced Implantation Detection Array (AIDA), two HPGe Clover detectors and a large set of 166 counters of 3He embedded in a high-density polyethylene matrix. This article reports on a novel methodology developed for the conceptual design and optimisation of the 3He-tubes array, aiming at the best possible performance in terms of neutron detection. The algorithm is based on a geometric representation of two selected parameters of merit, namely, average neutron detection efficiency and efficiency flatness, as a function of a reduced number of geometric variables. The response of the detection system itself, for each configuration, is obtained from a systematic MC-simulation implemented realistically in Geant4. This approach has been found to be particularly useful. On the one hand, due to the different types and large number of 3He-tubes involved and, on the other hand, due to the additional constraints introduced by the ancillary detectors for charged particles and gamma-rays. Empowered by the robustness of the algorithm, we have been able to design a versatile detection system, which can be easily re-arranged into a compact mode in order to maximize the neutron detection performance, at the cost of the gamma-ray sensitivity. In summary, we have designed a system which shows, for neutron energies up to 1(5) MeV, a rather flat and high average efficiency of 68.6%(64%) and 75.7%(71%) for the hybrid and compact modes, respectively. The performance of the BRIKEN system has been also quantified realistically by means of MC-simulations made with different neutron energy distributions.

Abstract

The integral measurement of the $^{12}$C(n,p)$^{12}$B reaction was performed at the neutron time of flight facility n_TOF at CERN. The total number of $^{12}$B nuclei produced per neutron pulse of the n_TOF beam was determined using the activation technique in combination with a time of flight technique. The cross section is integrated over the n_TOF neutron energy spectrum from reaction threshold at 13.6 MeV to 10 GeV. Having been measured up to 1 GeV on basis of the $^{235}$U(n,f) reaction, the neutron energy spectrum above 200 MeV has been reevaluated due to the recent extension of the cross section reference for this particular reaction, which is otherwise considered a standard up to 200 MeV. The results from the dedicated GEANT4 simulations have been used to evaluate the neutron flux from 1 GeV up to 10 GeV. The experimental results related to the $^{12}$C(n,p)$^{12}$B reaction are compared with the evaluated cross sections from major libraries and with the predictions of different GEANT4 models, which mostly underestimate the $^{12}$B production. On the contrary, a good reproduction of the integral cross section derived from measurements is obtained with TALYS-1.6 calculations, with optimized parameters., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables

Abstract

The newly built second experimental area EAR2 of the n_TOF spallation neutron source at CERN allows to perform (n, charged particles) experiments on short-lived highly radioactive targets. This paper describes a detection apparatus and the experimental procedure for the determination of the cross-section of the 7Be(n,{\alpha}) reaction, which represents one of the focal points toward the solution of the cosmological Lithium abundance problem, and whose only measurement, at thermal energy, dates back to 1963. The apparently unsurmountable experimental difficulties stemming from the huge 7Be {\gamma}-activity, along with the lack of a suitable neutron beam facility, had so far prevented further measurements. The detection system is subject to considerable radiation damage, but is capable of disentangling the rare reaction signals from the very high background. Abstract

The cellular immune response to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in response to full mRNA COVID-19 vaccination could be variable among healthy individuals. Studies based only in specific antibody levels could show an erroneous immune protection at long times. For that, we analyze the antibody levels specific to the S protein and the presence of SARS-CoV-2-specific T cells by ELISpot and AIM assays in intensive care unit (ICU) workers with no antecedents of COVID-19 and vaccinated with two doses of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines. All individuals were seronegative for the SARS-CoV-2 protein S before vaccination (Pre-v), but 34.1% (14/41) of them showed pre-existing T lymphocytes specific for some viral proteins (S, M and N). One month after receiving two doses of COVID-19 mRNA vaccine (Post-v1), all cases showed seroconversion with high levels of total and neutralizing antibodies to the spike protein, but six of them (14.6%) had no T cells reactive to the S protein. Abstract

The Prospect of Humanitarian Artificial Intelligence (The Prospect of HAI) encapsulates the vast and intricate landscape of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) with both theoretical and practical nuances. Carlos Montemayor (Carlos) artfully paints a complex picture, presenting a realm of profound philosophical interest. While abstract, the book navigates the terrain crucial for AGI development, successfully capturing its multifaceted nature. This review focuses on the alignment problem, probing its epistemic and moral dimensions. Imperfect as we are, aligning AGI presents challenges: discerning viable solutions remains uncertain. The epistemic aspect of alignment of the AGI seems to be impossible for the goals Carlos is proposing for the nascent industry of AI. The moral, political, and legal aspects of alignment offer a challenging panorama, mirroring parallels between the Philosophy of AI and theological discourse. Drawing parallels with our experience in moral alignment, especially in guiding children, underscores the idea that this problem is older and more widespread. The Prospect of HAI serves as an inaugural exploration in this realm. Future endeavors should delve deeper into technical intricacies while maintaining a broad philosophical scope. It stands as a compelling precursor to the burgeoning field of philosophy of AI. Carlos should go for the 2nd edition.

129. Fotografía, métodos históricos y análisis: retos y nuevos paradigmas

Abstract

Toda disciplina vinculada al examen y conocimiento de los fenómenos científicos o humanísticos precisa de un método de análisis que organice y estructure las múltiples aproximaciones para sus diversos objetos de estudio, de unas herramientas conceptuales que nos ayuden a revisar, contrastar y discernir el origen, desarrollo y derivaciones de sus ideas y debates principales, y, por último, de un andamiaje crítico que nos permita transitar y descifrar las tesis, opiniones y argumentos de la historiografía específica sobre la materia en cuestión. El método es, ante todo, un mapa desplegable que nos informa de dónde venimos y hacia dónde vamos, pero, sobre todo, que nos posiciona en el devenir continuo del saber. Podemos avanzar por intuición y sentir el placer de la deriva o podemos trazar una hoja de ruta que nos recuerde las hipótesis y los objetivos iniciales de nuestro trabajo, modulándola en función de los progresos obtenidos o adaptándola a nuevas especulaciones a partir de los hallazgos inesperados o, incluso, de los errores y fracasos eventuales. Los estudios históricos sobre la fotografía en España son relativamente recientes en comparación con las aportaciones de otras historiografías nacionales europeas y americanas. Salvo algunas contribuciones puntuales de escasa trascendencia, en la década de los 50 y 60, hubo que esperar a finales de los años 70 y principios de los 80 del siglo pasado, para que empezaran a cimentarse las bases de la investigación histórica y teórica en torno a la fotografía. Sin embargo, la falta de una tradición académica y la nula atención que las universidades habían prestado a este tipo de estudios, coartó el desarrollo normal y esperado de una disciplina –o de un conjunto de disciplinas– que empezaba a buscar su camino en áreas tan diversas como las Bellas Artes, la Historia Contemporánea, la Historia del Arte o la Comunicación Visual. 132. Chromosomal damage, gene expression and alternative transcription in human lymphocytes exposed to mixed ionizing radiation as encountered in space

Abstract

Astronauts travelling in space will be exposed to mixed beams of particle radiation and photons. Exposure limits that correspond to defined cancer risk are calculated by multiplying absorbed doses by a radiation-type specific quality factor that reflects the biological effectiveness of the particle without considering possible interaction with photons. We have shown previously that alpha radiation and X-rays may interact resulting in synergistic DNA damage responses in human peripheral blood lymphocytes but the level of intra-individual variability was high. In order to assess the variability and validate the synergism, blood from two male donors was drawn at 9 time points during 3 seasons of the year and exposed to 0–2 Gy of X-rays, alpha particles or 1:1 mixture of both (half the dose each). DNA damage response was quantified by chromosomal aberrations and by mRNA levels of 3 radiation-responsive genes FDXR, CDKN1A and MDM2 measured 24 h post exposure. The quality of response in terms of differential expression of alternative transcripts was assessed by using two primer pairs per gene. A consistently higher than expected effect of mixed beams was found in both donors for chromosomal aberrations and gene expression with some seasonal variability for the latter. No synergy was detected for alternative transcription.

Abstract

[Resumen] Introducción: La Esclerosis Lateral Amiotrófica (ELA) es una enfermedad que afecta a las neuronas motoras que se encargan de controlar el movimiento voluntario, provocando de manera progresiva una parálisis completa, afectando además la comunicación y la deglución. A raíz de estas características, las personas sufren un cambio en sus ocupaciones vinculadas a la parentalidad, ya que las actividades físicas quedan relegadas a un segundo plano, y el principal cuidado que desempeñan es aquel de tipo emocional. Objetivo: Conocer el impacto del diagnóstico de ELA en las ocupaciones y roles vinculados a la parentalidad. Metodología: Se empleó una metodología cualitativa con enfoque fenomenológico. Participaron un total de 12 personas (6 madres/padres con ELA y 6 hijos/as). Los métodos empleados para la recogida de datos fueron la entrevista semiestructurada y la observación. Resultados: Tras analizar los datos, se obtuvieron las siguientes categorías: “aceptación de la enfermedad y cambios en la cotidianeidad”, “adaptación: entorno y desconocimiento”, “cuidados: la progresión de la dependencia y su impacto emocional”, “parentalidad: relaciones y cambio de rol”, “adaptaciones y cambios en las ocupaciones”. Conclusiones: Con la aparición de la enfermedad, las actividades parentales quedan limitadas al domicilio y las personas cada vez valoran más pasar tiempo en familia. Objective: To find the impact of the diagnostics of ALS on occupations and roles linked to parenthood. Methodology: A qualitative methodology with phenomenological approach was used. A total of 12 people participated (6 mothers /fathers with ALS and 6 children). The method used for data collection consisted of semiestructures interviews and observation. Results: After analyzing the data, the following categories were obtenided: “acceptance of the disease and changes in daily life”, “adaptation: environment and ignorance”, “care: the progression of dependence and its emotional impact”, “parenthood: relationships and role change”, “adaptations and changes in occupations”. Conclusions: With the onset of the disease, parental activities are limited to the household and people increasingly value spending time with their families. ALS also causes changes in children, who become caregivers, as their daily life is based on taking care for their family member.

[Resumen] Introducción. Las personas con Discapacidad Intelectual están habitualmente privadas de poder experimentar la participación en el trabajo. En proyectos de inserción laboral de este colectivo, escasea la presencia de la Terapia Ocupacional y las intervenciones centradas en las actividades de la vida diaria. Tras analizar la literatura científica, se considera necesario crear un programa que genere sostenibilidad en el empleo a través de la promoción de la autonomía personal. Objetivo. El objetivo de este proyecto es diseñar desde Terapia Ocupacional un programa de transición al mundo laboral centrado en la autonomía personal de personas con Discapacidad Intelectual leve y moderada. Metodología. El presente trabajo utiliza metodología mixta mediante la triangulación de intermétodos. Para la recolección de datos cualitativos se usará la herramienta OPHI-II a través de una entrevista semiestructurada, en cambio, los cuantitativos se analizarán con la escala de “Método de Perfiles de adecuación a la tarea” de Lantegi Batuak. In labour insertion projects for this group, the presence of Occupational Therapy and interventions based on activities of daily loving are scarce. After conducting an in-depth literature review, it is deemed necessary to create a program that generates sustainability in employment through the promotion of personal autonomy. Objective From the perspective of Occupational Therapy the aim of this project is to design an employment transition program for individuals with mild and moderate intellectual disabilities. Methodology This project utilizes mixed methodology through inter-method triangulation. For qualitative data collection OPHI-II is going to be used through a semi-structured interview, quantitative data will be analysed using the ‘Task Suitability Profile Methods’ scale from Lantegi Batuak. The program will be implemented in an association in A Coruña and is scheduled to last twenty-four months. The intervention will be carried out over ten months, focusing on self-determination and transition to employment. After this phase, follow-up assessments will be conducted every three months over a nine-month period to evaluate the program´s impact.

Abstract

Addressing the pressing challenges in agriculture necessitates swift advancements in breeding programs, particularly for perennial crops like grapevines. Moving beyond the traditional biparental quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping, we conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) encompassing 588 Vitis vinifera L. cultivars from a Chilean breeding program, spanning three seasons and testing 13 key yield-related traits. A strong candidate gene, Vitvi11g000454, located on chromosome 11 and related to plant response to biotic and abiotic stresses through jasmonic acid signaling, was associated with berry width and holds potential for enhancing berry size in grape breeding. We also mapped novel QTL associated with post-harvest traits across chromosomes 2, 4, 9, 11, 15, 18, and 19, broadening our grasp on the genetic intricacies dictating fruit post-harvest behavior, including decay, shriveling, and weight loss. Leveraging gene ontology annotations, we drew parallels between traits and scrutinized candidate genes, laying a robust groundwork for future trait-feature identification endeavors in plant breeding. We also highlighted the importance of carefully considering the choice of the response variable in GWAS analyses, as the use of best linear unbiased estimators (BLUEs) corrections in our study may have led to the suppression of some common QTL in grapevine traits. Our results underscore the imperative of pioneering non-destructive evaluation techniques for long-term conservation traits, offering grape breeders and cultivators insights to improve post-harvest table grape quality and minimize waste.

Fundamento. El objetivo es analizar el impacto de las intervenciones para mitigar la influencia de las redes sociales (RRSS) en la anorexia y bulimia nerviosas. Métodos. Revisión sistemática de las bases de datos PubMed, Scopus, PsycINFO y Web of Science. Se incluyeron ensayos clínicos aleatorizados, publicados entre 2013 y 2023, con puntuación mínima de 5 en la escala de calidad metodológica de Van Tulder. Resultados. Se seleccionaron ocho estudios desarrollados en centros de educación secundaria o universitaria -uno online- que incluían 5.084 participantes, principalmente mujeres jóvenes y adolescentes, con edad media entre 12 y 32 años. El impacto de las RRSS se estudió de forma global o centrándose en Instagram, Facebook, Tik-Tok, Twitter o Snapchat Se encontró una correlación positiva entre la exposición a ideales de belleza irreales en las RRSS y una mayor preocupación e insatisfacción por la imagen corporal. Todos los estudios utilizaron instrumentos para valorar la efectividad de las intervenciones. Las intervenciones permitieron reducir la influencia percibida por los medios y las RRSS, mejorar las valoraciones en la autopercepción y autoestima, disminuir los niveles de ansiedad y de internalización de ideal de belleza delgado, reducir las restricciones dietéticas y mejorar el uso de las RRSS. Conclusiones. Las intervenciones más duraderas lograron mejoras en satisfacción corporal (un año) y en síntomas depresivos (seis meses), especialmente en mujeres. The study aim to analyze the impact of interventions to help mitigate the influence of social networks on anorexia and bulimia nervosa. Methodology. A systematic review was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, PsycINFO and Web of Science. The inclusion criteria were: randomized clinical trials, published between 2013 and 2023 with a score ≥ 5 points on the Van Tulder methodological quality scale. Results. Eight studies were selected, most carried out in secondary education centers or universities; one was online. The study sample consisted of 5,084 participants mainly young women and adolescents with an average age between 12 and 32 years. As for the social networks, some studies described their impact at a general level, while others focused on Instagram, Facebook, Tik-Tok, Twitter, and Snapchat. A positive correlation was found between the exposure to unrealistic beauty ideals found in social networks with greater concern and dissatisfaction with body image. All studies used instruments to assess the effectiveness of the interventions. The interventions helped reduce the influence of the media and social networks, improve self-perception and self-esteem assessments, reduce anxiety levels and internalization of the thin beauty ideal, reduce dietary restrictions, and make use of social networks differently. Conclusions. Longer-lasting interventions can improve body satisfaction (one year) and depressive symptoms (six months), especially in women. Interventions should include attention to self-criticism, self-perception, self-esteem, body image, nutritional management, and media literacy skills.

Abstract

Epitaxial films may be released from growth substrates and transferred to structurally and chemically incompatible substrates, but epitaxial films of transition metal perovskite oxides have not been transferred to electroactive substrates for voltage control of their myriad functional properties. Here we demonstrate good strain transmission at the incoherent interface between a strain-released film of epitaxially grown ferromagnetic La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 and an electroactive substrate of ferroelectric 0.68Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.32PbTiO3 in a different crystallographic orientation. Our strain-mediated magnetoelectric coupling compares well with respect to epitaxial heterostructures, where the epitaxy responsible for strong coupling can degrade film magnetization via strain and dislocations. Moreover, the electrical switching of magnetic anisotropy is repeatable and non-volatile. High-resolution magnetic vector maps reveal that micromagnetic behaviour is governed by electrically controlled strain and cracks in the film. Our demonstration should inspire others to control the physical/chemical properties in strain-released epitaxial oxide films by using electroactive substrates to impart strain via non-epitaxial interfaces.

Abstract

The $\beta$-delayed neutron emission probabilities of neutron rich Hg and Tl nuclei have been measured together with $\beta$-decay half-lives for 20 isotopes of Au, Hg, Tl, Pb and Bi in the mass region N$\gtrsim$126. These are the heaviest species where neutron emission has been observed so far. These measurements provide key information to evaluate the performance of nuclear microscopic and phenomenological models in reproducing the high-energy part of the $\beta$-decay strength distribution. Abstract

A combination of experiments and numerical modeling was used to study the spatial evolution of the ferromagnetic phase transition in a thin film engineered to have a smooth gradient in exchange strength. Mean-field simulations predict, and experiments confirm that a 100 nm Ni[x]Cu[1-x] alloy film with Ni concentration that varies by 9 % as a function of depth behaves predominantly as if comprised of a continuum of uncoupled ferromagnetic layers with continuously varying Curie temperatures. A mobile boundary separating ordered and disordered regions emerges as temperature is increased. We demonstrate continuous control of the boundary position with temperature, and reversible control of the magnetically ordered sample volume with magnetic field.

Abstract

Background: The Revised Knox Preschool Play Scale (RKPPS) is a comprehensive assessment test that observes the level of play development; however, there is no culturally adapted version available with stable psychometric values that would allow its widespread use and provide objective information during clinical evaluations. Methods: Cross-cultural adaptation included direct and retrospective translations, along with cognitive interviews with pediatric occupational therapists to analyze the comprehensibility of the translation. In addition, a final phase of linguistic revision was carried out to determine the grammatical and semantic fit of the adapted version. Finally, inter-rater reliability was analyzed in a sample of typically developing children aged four to six years old. Results: The processes of translation and back-translation, cognitive interview, and linguistic review determined an adequate grammatical and semantic equivalence to the Spanish cultural context. Almost perfect agreement, with values between 0.82 and 0.94, was obtained for items and play dimensions, indicating that the precision of the measurements between both evaluators was excellent. Conclusions: The cross-culturally adapted version of the RKPPS meets the necessary adjustments for the sociocultural context and can be used in the clinical practice of occupational therapy.

Abstract

Arterial hypertension is a highly prevalent chronic disease worldwide, with several etiologies and treatments that may eventually have side effects or result in patients developing tolerance. There is growing interest in traditional medicine and functional foods to isolate biomolecules that could be useful as coadjuvants for treating several aliments. Pitaya, a desert fruit endemic in Mexico, is a rich source of bioactive molecules (betalains and phenolic compounds). In this work, the vasorelaxation properties of pitaya juice concentrate and fraction one were investigated using aortic and mesenteric rings from rats. The incubation of rings with pitaya juice concentrate or fraction one induced significant vasorelaxation, independent of the endothelium, and showed resistance to potassium channel blockers. This vasorelaxation was associated with the transmembrane influx of extracellular calcium through the vascular smooth muscle cells, with an inhibitory effect on the voltage-dependent calcium channel currents. Also, 400 mg/mL of pitaya juice concentrate in spontaneous hypertensive rats reduced their blood pressure for 48 h. Phytochemical analyses showed that the primary compounds in F1 were glycosidic in nature, and could be a complex mixture of disaccharides, dimeric disaccharides, or even tetrasaccharides. The glycosidic compounds found in F1 primarily contributed to vasodilatation, establishing a voltage-dependent calcium channel inhibition as a possible molecular target. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Quality standards fulfilment is an essential task in manufacturing processes that involves high costs. One target is to avoid the presence of burrs in the edge of machine workpieces, which reduce the quality of the products. Furthermore, they are not easily removed since the part can even be damaged. In this paper, we propose an optimized Convolutional Neural Network, to detect the presence of burrs in images of milling parts. Its design is focused on the optimization of classification (accuracy) and performance metrics (training time and number of trainable parameters). The proposed architecture identifies burrs with a 91.16% accuracy in the test set, outperforming existing models as EfficientNetB0. It also reduces the number of trainable parameters from other models as AlexNet by 1.5 million. The prediction process just takes 48.39 milliseconds per image. Finally, in order to check if the model gets a high activation in the region of interest, a visual explanation of the model is also carried out by using Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping. Abstract

Specific T cell responses against SARS-CoV-2 provided an overview of acquired immunity during the pandemic. Anti-SARS-CoV-2 immunity determines the severity of acute illness, but also might be related to the possible persistence of symptoms (long COVID). We retrospectively analyzed ex vivo longitudinal CD8+ T cell responses in 26 COVID-19 patients diagnosed with severe disease, initially (1 month) and long-term (10 months), and in a cohort of 32 vaccinated healthcare workers without previous SARS-CoV-2 infection. We used peptide-human leukocyte antigen (pHLA) dextramers recognizing 26 SARS-CoV-2-derived epitopes of viral and other non-structural proteins. Most patients responded to at least one of the peptides studied, mainly derived from non-structural ORF1ab proteins. After 10 months follow-up, CD8+ T cell responses were maintained at long term and reaction against certain epitopes (A*01:01-ORF1ab1637) was still detected and functional, showing a memory-like phenotype (CD127+ PD-1+). The total number of SARS-CoV-2-specific CD8+ T cells was significantly associated with protection against long COVID in these patients. Compared with vaccination, infected patients showed a less effective immune response to spike protein-derived peptides restricted by HLA. So, the A*01:01-S865 and A*24:02-S1208 dextramers were only recognized in vaccinated individuals. We conclude that initial SARS-CoV-2-specific CD8+ T cell response could be used as a marker to understand the evolution of severe disease and post-acute sequelae after SARS-CoV-2 infection.
