Abstract

Objective\ud To develop a core outcome set for pre‐eclampsia.\ud \ud Design\ud Consensus development study.\ud \ud Setting\ud International.\ud \ud Population\ud Two hundred and eight‐one healthcare professionals, 41 researchers and 110 patients, representing 56 countries, participated.\ud \ud Methods\ud Modified Delphi method and Modified Nominal Group Technique.\ud \ud Results\ud A long‐list of 116 potential core outcomes was developed by combining the outcomes reported in 79 pre‐eclampsia trials with those derived from thematic analysis of 30 in‐depth interviews of women with lived experience of pre‐eclampsia. Forty‐seven consensus outcomes were identified from the Delphi process following which 14 maternal and eight offspring core outcomes were agreed at the consensus development meeting. Maternal core outcomes: death, eclampsia, stroke, cortical blindness, retinal detachment, pulmonary oedema, acute kidney injury, liver haematoma or rupture, abruption, postpartum haemorrhage, raised liver enzymes, low platelets, admission to intensive care required, and intubation and ventilation. Offspring core outcomes: stillbirth, gestational age at delivery, birthweight, small‐for‐gestational‐age, neonatal mortality, seizures, admission to neonatal unit required and respiratory support.\ud \ud Conclusions\ud The core outcome set for pre‐eclampsia should underpin future randomised trials and systematic reviews. Such implementation should ensure that future research holds the necessary reach and relevance to inform clinical practice, enhance women's care and improve the outcomes of pregnant women and their babies.

Abstract

Objectives: To develop consensus definitions for the core outcome set for pre-eclampsia. Study design: Potential definitions for individual core outcomes were identified across four formal definition development initiatives, nine national and international guidelines, 12 Cochrane systematic reviews, and 79 randomised trials. Eighty-six definitions were entered into the consensus development meeting. Ten healthcare professionals and three researchers, including six participants who had experience of conducting research in low- and middle-income countries, participated in the consensus development process. The final core outcome set was approved by an international steering group. Result(s): Consensus definitions were developed for all core outcomes. When considering stroke, pulmonary oedema, acute kidney injury, raised liver enzymes, low platelets, birth weight, and neonatal seizures, consensus definitions were developed specifically for low- and middle-income countries because of the limited availability of diagnostic interventions including computerised tomography, chest x-ray, laboratory tests, equipment, and electroencephalogram monitoring. Conclusion(s): Consensus on measurements for the pre-eclampsia core outcome set will help to ensure consistency across future randomised trials and systematic reviews. Such standardization should make research evidence more accessible and facilitate the translation of research into clinical practice. 112. Data Journalism and Investigative Reporting in the Arab World: From Emotive to Evidence-Based Journalism

Abstract

Data-driven journalism is still somewhat new in the Arab world, and despite some promising initiatives, there are a few obstacles that Arab journalism faces in this transitional period to data journalism. This chapter will discuss two of these challenges: the first is traditional practices of Arab reporting that can be described as emotive in nature, and the second is the lack of data and access to information. Nonetheless, reporters, and particularly investigative journalists in the region, are working towards addressing these two challenges especially through the training of the next generation of journalists. Interestingly, data journalism is being adopted by Arab investigative reporters with the aim of producing evidence-based reporting, and for that reason this chapter will focus specifically on that form of journalism. James S. Ettema and Theodore L. Glaser (1998) point out that emotion and persuasion also play a role in American investigative journalism: hence, they define investigative journalism as ‘the fiercest of indignation fused with the hardest of fact’ (Ettema and Glasser 1998, 10). In this definition, investigative journalism is characterised by a morally engaged voice which seeks to evoke ‘public moral indignation (Ettema and Glasser 1998, 10). In accordance, this chapter argues that investigative journalism in the Arab world is already characterised by the ‘fiercest of indignation’ but is now seeking to fuse that with the ‘hardest of facts’. Ettema and Glaser (1998) state that: ‘Investigative reporting yields stories that are carefully verified and skillfully narrated accounts of specific injury and injustice, but stories with a meaning that transcends the facts of the particular case’ (Ettema and Glasser 1998: 3).

Abstract

[Abstract] The usability of Domain-Specific Languages (DSLs) has been attracting considerable interest from researchers lately. In particular, our literature review found many usability studies that make use of subjective and empirical methods. However, we noted a lack of heuristic methods in the literature. In comparison, there exist several usability studies of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) that have used heuristics with success, so we argue that this approach would be also useful for DSLs. Therefore, this paper proposes a set of usability heuristics for DSLs and illustrates the approach with a case study. We show how our heuristics helped us identify many actual usability problems, even for a simple DSL.
